Abstract A sufficiently high current output of nano energy harvesting devices is highly desired in practical applications, while still a challenge. Theoretical evidence has demonstrated that Coulomb drag based on the ion-electron coupling interaction, can amplify current in nanofluidic energy generation systems, resulting in enhanced energy harvesting. However, experimental validation of this concept is still lacking. Here we develop a nanofluidic chemoelectrical generator (NCEG) consisting of a carbon nanotube membrane (CNTM) sandwiched between metal electrodes, in which spontaneous redox reactions between the metal and oxygen in electrolyte solution enable the movement of ions within the carbon nanotubes. Through Coulomb drag effect between moving ions in these nanotubes and electrons within the CNTM, an amplificated current of 1.2 mA cm−2 is generated, which is 16 times higher than that collected without a CNTM. Meanwhile, one single NCEG unit can produce a high voltage of ~0.8 V and exhibit a linear scalable performance up to tens of volts. Different from the other Coulomb drag systems that need additional energy input, the NCEG with enhanced energy harvesting realizes the ion-electron coupling by its own redox reactions potential, which provides a possibility to drive multiple electronic devices for practical applications.

Grass carp was an important economic fish for freshwater aquaculture. The exploring and utilization of high-quality grass carp germplasm resources were important for ensuring a domestic supply of high-quality aquatic protein. However, natural grass carp populations in China were facing severe threats because of the effects of frequent human activities, water environment damage, overfishing, etc. Against this background, high-quality grass carp germplasm resources were the foundation for the healthy and sustainable development of the grass carp aquaculture industry, so systematic collection, preservation, identification, evaluation, protection, and utilization of them carry great strategic importance. This paper summarizes major research results of grass carp in morphology, cytogenetics, molecular population genetics, etc. It not only introduced genetic improvement techniques such as gynogenesis, hybrid breeding, and polyploid breeding, but also discussed the existing research on the protection measures of grass carp germplasm resources. On this basis, the paper proposed new methods to improve the protection of grass carp germplasm and create improved varieties, which could provide high-quality resources for the sustainable development of the grass carp industry.

Disease-resistant grass carp (DR-GGC) was obtained by backcrossing gynogenetic grass carp (GGC, 2n = 48, female) with common grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus [GC], 2n = 48, male). The genetic constitution and the potential mutation associated with growth dominance in DR-GGC were analyzed by genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), whole-genome resequencing (WGRS) and RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq). The GISH results showed partial translocations and deletions in the chromosomes of DR-GGC compared with GC. The WGRS results demonstrated that there were numerous genetic variations between DR-GGC and its parents, among which DR-GGC had the highest genomic heterozygosity and GGC had the highest genomic purity. The RNA-seq results revealed that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were significantly enriched in cellular processes and immune pathways in DR-GGC and GGC compared with GC. Meanwhile, the combined analysis of WGRS and RNA-seq identified DEGs with overlapping mutation loci in DR-GGC and GGC compared with GC. These DEGs were significantly enriched in the pathways of growth, metabolism, and immunity, including cellular metabolism, biosynthesis, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, and extra cellular matrix (ECM) receptor interactions. These results provide a genetic basis for exploring the better growth characteristics and disease resistance of DR-GGC than GC, valuable information on the genetic breeding for grass carp, and a further understanding of the genetic characteristics of gynogenetic individuals.

Ammonia (NH3) potentially harms human health, the ecosystem, industrial and agricultural production, and other fields. Therefore, the detection of NH3 has broad prospects and important significance. Ti3C2Tx is a common MXene material that is great for detecting NH3 at room temperature because it has a two-dimensional layered structure, a large specific surface area, is easy to functionalize on the surface, is sensitive to gases at room temperature, and is very selective for NH3. This review provides a detailed description of the preparation process as well as recent advances in the development of gas-sensing materials based on Ti3C2Tx MXene for room-temperature NH3 detection. It also analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of various preparation and synthesis methods for Ti3C2Tx MXene’s performance. Since the gas-sensitive performance of pure Ti3C2Tx MXene regarding NH3 can be further improved, this review discusses additional composite materials, including metal oxides, conductive polymers, and two-dimensional materials that can be used to improve the sensitivity of pure Ti3C2Tx MXene to NH3. Furthermore, the present state of research on the NH3 sensitivity mechanism of Ti3C2Tx MXene-based sensors is summarized in this study. Finally, this paper analyzes the challenges and future prospects of Ti3C2Tx MXene-based gas-sensitive materials for room-temperature NH3 detection.

Hemibarbus maculatus Bleeker (HM) is an economically important fish that is highly valued by consumers. Gynogenesis is an important breeding method in aquaculture that has been widely applied to many fish species. In this study, we adopted an improved method of gynogenesis that proceeds as follows: first, inactivated koi carp sperm were used to stimulate eggs of HM, and then the UV-inactivated koi carp (KOC) sperm and HM eggs were mixed and stirred for 20–30 s to activate the eggs. The activated eggs were placed in yellow mud at 0 °C for 20–22 min for cold shock treatment, and then placed in water at 4–6 °C, 8–10 °C, and 15–18 °C in order, each for 1–2 min. After incubation at 22–25 °C, gynogenetic Hemibarbus maculatus Bleeker (GHM) were obtained. Morphological measurements and blood cell comparisons showed that there were no significant differences between GHM and HM. At the molecular level, comparative analysis of microsatellites DNA indicated that one fragment of GHM came from the KOC. This study provides the first evidence that DNA fragments from male parents exist in GHM at the molecular level. This discovery has important implications for fish genetic breeding.

SnO2 has been extensively used in the detection of various gases. As a gas sensing material, SnO2 has excellent physical-chemical properties, high reliability, and short adsorption-desorption time. The application of the traditional SnO2 gas sensor is limited due to its higher work-temperature, low gas response, and poor selectivity. Nanomaterials can significantly impact gas-sensitive properties due to the quantum size, surface, and small size effects of nanomaterials. By applying nanotechnology to the preparation of SnO2, the SnO2 nanomaterial-based sensors could show better performance, which greatly expands the application of SnO2 gas sensors. In this review, the preparation method of the SnO2 nanostructure, the types of gas detected, and the improvements of SnO2 gas-sensing performances via elemental modification are introduced as well as the future development of SnO2 is discussed.

Gynogenesis, as a special method of distant hybridization, can be used to accelerate the formation of breeding lines such as fish varieties and populations, and cultivate lines or varieties with higher dominant traits. While, there are few reports on the study of gynogenesis between trans order species in freshwater fish. Even the meat quality comparison between the gynogenetic offspring obtained above and their parents is rarely studied. In order to understand whether the meat quality of naturally gynogenetic blunt snout bream (GBSB) is better than that of its parents (blunt snout bream♀ and Chinese perch♂), we analyzed the texture, composition, antioxidant capacity and nutrients of natural gynogenesis blunt snout bream and its parent muscle. In the muscle of texture characteristics of hardness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness, natural GBSB were better than those of the normal BSB. Muscle fiber size of GBSB is between the maternal and the paternal fish. Compared with the maternal parent, the natural GBSB had higher antioxidant enzyme activities (CAT, SOD and GSH) and higher mineral element (Na, Mg, Ca, P and Zn) contents. In muscle nutrients, the gynogenetic offspring also had more delicious amino acids (Asp, Glu, Gly, Ala, Tyr and Phe) and fatty acids than the maternal parents. Collectively, through distant hybridization between common BSB and Chinese perch (CP), a high-quality gynogenetic fish with more nutrition and stronger muscle performance than maternal fish was obtained. The above results not only provide evidence for the hybridization origin of gynogenetic fish, but also provide new ideas for the innovation of new species.

Selecting the right cathode material is a key component to achieving high‐energy and long‐lifespan aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs); however, the development of cathode materials still faces serious challenges due to the high polarization of Zn2+. In this work, MnV12O31·10H2O (MnVO) synthesized via a one‐step hydrothermal method is proposed as a promising cathode material for AZIBs. Because the stable layered structure and hieratical morphology of MnVO provide a large layer space for rapid ion transports, this material exhibits high specific capacity (433 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), an outstanding long‐term cyclability (5000 cycles at a current density of 3 A g−1), and an excellent energy density (454.65 Wh kg−1). To illustrate the intercalation mechanism, ex situ X‐Ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy are adopted, uncovering an H+/Zn2+ dual‐cation co‐intercalation processes. In addition, density‐functional theory calculation analysis shows that MnVO has a delocalized electron cloud and the diffusion energy barrier of Zn2+ in MnVO is low, which promotes the Zn2+ transport and consequently improves the reversibility of the battery upon deep cycling. The key and enlightening insights are provided in the results for designing high‐performance vanadium‐oxide‐based cathode materials for AZIBs.

In this study, juvenile crayfish hatched from the same population were cultured in different growing environments: pond (D1), paddy field (D2), and aquaculture barrel (D3), and fed for 60 days. Crayfishes were selected randomly, females and males, 50 tails each from six groups (D1-♀, D1-♂, D2-♀, D2-♂, D3-♀, D3-♂) to measure the following morphological traits: full length (X1), body length (X2), chelicerae length (X3), chelicerae weight (X4), cephalothorax length (X5), cephalothorax width (X6), cephalothorax height (X7), eye spacing (X8), caudal peduncle length (X9), and caudal peduncle weight (X10). We found that the coefficient of variation (CV) of X4 was the largest in each culture mode, and males (28.58%~38.67%) were larger than females (37.76%~66.74%). The CV of X4 of crayfish cultured in D1 and D2 was larger than that of D3. All traits except X8 were positively correlated with body weight (p < 0.05). After pathway analysis, we found that X4, X5, X7, and X10 were significantly correlated with the body weight of D1-♀; the equation was YD1-♀ = −29.803 + 1.249X4 + 0.505X5 + 0.701X7 + 1.483X10 (R2 = 0.947). However, X2, X4, and X6 were significantly correlated with the body weight of D1-♂; the equation was YD1-♂ = −40.881 + 0.39X2 + 0.845X4 + 1.142X6 (R2 = 0.927). In D2-♀, X1, X4, X5, and X10 were significantly correlated with body weight; the equation was YD2-♀ = −12.248 + 0.088X1 + 1.098X4 + 0.275X5 + 0.904X10 (R2 = 0.977). X4 and X5 played a major role in the body weight of D2-♂ with the equation: YD2-♂ = −24.871 + 1.177X4 + 0.902X5 (R2 = 0.973). X3 and X10 mainly contributed to the body weight of D3-♀ with the equation: YD3-♀ = −22.476 + 0.432X3 + 3.153X10 (R2 = 0.976). X1 and X4 mainly contributed to the body weight of D3-♂ with the equation: YD3-♂ = −34.434 + 0.363X1 + 0.669X4 (R2 = 0.918). Comparing the pathway analysis with the gray relation analysis, we could conclude that the traits most correlated with body weight in D1-♀ were X10 and X7; in D1-♂, X6; in D2-♀, X10, X1, and X5; in D2-♂, X5; in D3-♀, X10; and in D3-♂, X4 and X1.

Abstract Background Interspecific postzygotic reproduction isolation results from large genetic divergence between the subgenomes of established hybrids. Polyploidization immediately after hybridization may reset patterns of homologous chromosome pairing and ameliorate deleterious genomic incompatibility between the subgenomes of distinct parental species in plants and animals. However, the observation that polyploidy is less common in vertebrates raises the question of which factors restrict its emergence. Here, we perform analyses of the genome, epigenome, and gene expression in the nascent allotetraploid lineage (2.95 Gb) derived from the intergeneric hybridization of female goldfish (Carassius auratus, 1.49 Gb) and male common carp (Cyprinus carpio, 1.42 Gb), to shed light on the changes leading to the stabilization of hybrids. Results We firstly identify the two subgenomes derived from the parental lineages of goldfish and common carp. We find variable unequal homoeologous recombination in somatic and germ cells of the intergeneric F1 and allotetraploid (F22 and F24) populations, reflecting high plasticity between the subgenomes, and rapidly varying copy numbers between the homoeolog genes. We also find dynamic changes in transposable elements accompanied by genome merger and duplication in the allotetraploid lineage. Finally, we observe the gradual decreases in cis-regulatory effects and increases in trans-regulatory effects along with the allotetraploidization, which contribute to increases in the symmetrical homoeologous expression in different tissues and developmental stages, especially in early embryogenesis. Conclusions Our results reveal a series of changes in transposable elements, unequal homoeologous recombination, cis- and trans-regulations (e.g. DNA methylation), and homoeologous expression, suggesting their potential roles in mediating adaptive stabilization of regulatory systems of the nascent allotetraploid lineage. The symmetrical subgenomes and homoeologous expression provide a novel way of balancing genetic incompatibilities, providing a new insight into the early stages of allopolyploidization in vertebrate evolution.

The mitochondria of most organisms follow strict maternal inheritance, and the mechanism of elimination of paternal mitochondria is unclear. Our previous studies showed that the paternal mtDNA presented in the embryo of hybrid Megalobrama Amblycephala (BSB,♀) ​× ​Carassius auratus red var(RCC,♂) (BR) and its reciprocal hybrid (RB), but its expression was quiescent. However, the microinjected mitochondria persisted in the embryo and its mtDNA expressed throughout embryonic development. In addition, the chromosome number of RCC (2n ​= ​100) is much larger than that of BSB (2n ​= ​48). All BR embryos were severely abnormal and ultimately died, while the RB embryos could survive and grow up into adult. It implied that the nuclear-cytoplasm incompatibility may be an important cause of BR abnormality. In this study, exogenous parental mitochondria were microinjected into BR embryos, and it was found that paternal mitochondrial DNA persisted and expressed throughout embryonic development. Meanwhile, the study also found that microinjection of isolated paternal (RCC) mitochondria into BR embryos significantly improved the degree of early embryonic abnormality with some fry swimming normally, comparing to the control embryos. However, injection of maternal (BSB) mitochondria did not improve the development of BR embryos. We safely concluded exogenous mitochondria escape the mechanism of elimination and its DNA persist and express throughout embryonic development. In addition, the expression of paternal mitochondrial genes largely reduces the cyto-nuclear conflict, so that the early BR embryos exhibit less degree of abnormality and enhanced activity.

Based on the distant hybridization derived from Hypophthalmichthys nobilis (bighead carp, BIC, 2n ​= ​48) (♀) ​× ​Megalobrama amblycephala (blunt snout bream, BSB, 2n ​= ​48) (♂), we obtained a novel hybrid (BB) in this study. We comparatively investigated the morphological traits, chromosome numbers, DNA contents, microsatellite patterns, and DNA variations in 5S rDNA and Hox genes. The chromosome and flow cytometer results indicated that BB was a diploid hybrid with 48 chromosomes. We confirmed successful hybridization with microsatellite DNA markers and analyzed the Hox gene family in the parental and hybrid lines. The sequences of 5S rDNA in BB mapped to those in BIC and BSB, indicating that the genetic materials of BB were derived from BIC and BSB. The breeding experiment showed that BB had the characteristics of herbivore and fast growth. This diploid hybrid is of great significance for fish genetic breeding and applied research.

Detecting environmental contaminants is crucial for protecting ecosystems and human health. While traditional carbon dot (CD) fluorescent probes are versatile, they may suffer from limitations like fluctuations in signal intensity, leading to detection inaccuracies. In contrast, ratiometric fluorescent probes, designed with internal self-calibration mechanisms, offer enhanced sensitivity and reliability. This review focuses on the design and applications of ratiometric fluorescent probes based on CDs for environmental monitoring. Our discussion covers construction strategies, ratiometric fluorescence principles, and applications in detecting various environmental contaminants, including organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, and other substances. We also explore associated advantages and challenges and provide insights into potential solutions and future research directions.

Abstract Background An important aspect of studying evolution is to understand how new species are formed and their uniqueness is maintained. Hybridization can lead to the formation of new species through reorganization of the adaptive system and significant changes in phenotype. Interestingly, eight stable strains of 2nNCRC derived from interspecies hybridization have been established in our laboratory. To examine the phylogeographical pattern of the widely distributed genus Carassius across Eurasia and investigate the possible homoploid hybrid origin of the Carassius auratus complex lineage in light of past climatic events, the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) and one nuclear DNA were used to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationship between the C. auratus complex and 2nNCRC and to assess how demographic history, dispersal and barriers to gene flow have led to the current distribution of the C. auratus complex. Results As expected, 2nNCRC had a very close relationship with the C. auratus complex and similar morphological characteristics to those of the C. auratus complex, which is genetically distinct from the other three species of Carassius. The estimation of divergence time and ancestral state demonstrated that the C. auratus complex possibly originated from the Yangtze River basin in China. There were seven sublineages of the C. auratus complex across Eurasia and at least four mtDNA lineages endemic to particular geographical regions in China. The primary colonization route from China to Mongolia and the Far East (Russia) occurred during the Late Pliocene, and the diversification of other sublineages of the C. auratus complex specifically coincided with the interglacial stage during the Early and Mid-Pleistocene in China. Conclusion Our results support the origin of the C. auratus complex in China, and its wide distribution across Eurasia was mainly due to natural Pleistocene dispersal and recent anthropogenic translocation. The sympatric distribution of the ancestral area for both parents of 2nNCRC and the C. auratus complex, as well as the significant changes in the structure of pharyngeal teeth and morphological characteristics between 2nNCRC and its parents, imply that homoploid hybrid speciation (HHS) for C. auratus could likely have occurred in nature. The diversification pattern indicated an independent evolutionary history of the C. auratus complex, which was not separated from the most recent common ancestor of C. carassius or C. cuvieri. Considering that the paleoclimate oscillation and the development of an eastward-flowing drainage system during the Pliocene and Pleistocene in China provided an opportunity for hybridization between divergent lineages, the formation of 2nNCRC in our laboratory could be a good candidate for explaining the HHS of C. auratus in nature.

Hazardous gases have been strongly associated with being a detriment to human life within the environment. The development of a reliable gas sensor with high response and selectivity is of great significance for detecting different hazardous gases. TiO2 nanomaterials are promising candidates with great potential and excellent performance in gas sensor applications, such as hydrogen, acetone, ammonia, and ethanol detection. This review begins with a detailed discussion of the different dimensional morphologies of TiO2, which affect the gas sensing performance of TiO2 sensors. The diverse morphologies of TiO2 can easily be tuned by regulating the manufacturing conditions. Meanwhile, they exhibit unique characteristics for detecting gases, including large specific surface area, superior electron transport rates, extraordinary permeability, and active reaction sites, which offer new opportunities to improve the gas sensing properties. In addition, a variety of efforts have been made to functional TiO2 nanomaterials to further enhance sensing properties, including TiO2-based composites and light-assisted gas sensors. The enhanced gas sensing mechanisms of multi-component composite nanomaterials based on TiO2 include loaded noble metals, doped elements, constructed heterojunctions, and compounded with other functional materials. Finally, several studies have been summarized to demonstrate the comparative sensing properties of TiO2-based gas sensors.

The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is a well-known invasive species. It has become one of the most important freshwater aquaculture resources in China. In this study, we reported the karyotype and whole mitochondrial genome of Procambarus clarkii. In addition, we performed transcriptome analysis of Procambarus clarkii from two different body size populations. The three large individuals, namely, the LS group, were randomly chosen, with body lengths and weights of 16.24–18.85 ​cm and 38.96–45.36 ​g, respectively. The three small individuals, namely, the SS group, were randomly chosen, with body lengths and weights of 10.50–12.70 ​cm and 19.56–25.95 ​g, respectively. Comparative transcriptomic analysis of Procambarus clarkii characterized 36 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), comprising 20 upregulated genes and 16 downregulated genes in the SS group. Functional analyses revealed that four genes (metalloreductase STEAP4-like (Steap4), myosin heavy chain fast skeletal muscle, muscle-like (MH), vitelline membrane outer layer protein I-like protein (VMO-I), and secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC)) were involved in the regulation of cell proliferation, muscle growth and energy metabolism, suggesting that four genes were related to growth in P. clarkii. We validated the expression levels of these four differentially expressed genes in LS and SS using Quantitative real-time PCR. These results provide insights into the regulatory mechanisms underlying the difference in P. clarkii growth.

The surprising variation in the number of Hox clusters and genome structure in ray-finned fish lineages reflects the history of duplications and subsequent lineage-specific gene loss. However, there are few studies on whether Hox clusters in the early generations of hybrid lineages show more significant variation due to the continuous genomic oscillation caused by distant hybridization. We sequenced and analyzed Hox gene clusters from a crucian carp-like homodiploid fish (NCRC) lineage (a new hybrid lineage derived from common carp (Cyprinus carpio) (♀) ​× ​blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) (♂)). In the NCRC lineage, we reconstructed seven Hox clusters consisting of 48 Hox genes, ten of which were pseudogenes. The number of putative Hox clusters generated in NCRC-F1 was increased greatly by distant hybridization to an average number almost twice that in the maternal parent. This increasing trend continued in the subsequent self-mating generations of NCRC-F1. In contrast, the number of Hox cluster fragments inherited from the original parents gradually decreased as the number of NCRC lineage generations increased. This pattern was also found in the inheritance of recombinant Hox clusters. In terms of base composition, some genetic rules for the inheritance of these Hox clusters between different generations of the NCRC lineage were identified. Furthermore, the newly derived mutated Hox clusters in the NCRC lineage showed phylogenetic relationships that were closer to either crucian carp or silver crucian carp, revealing a clear evolutionary path. This study deepens our understanding of the evolution of Hox genes in the ray-finned fish clade.

Quantum dots nanomaterials have attracted extensive interest for fluorescence chemical sensors due their attributes, such as excellent optical characteristics, quantum size effects, interface effects, etc. Moreover, the fluorescence properties of quantum dots can be adjusted by changing their structure, size, morphology, composition, doping, and surface modification. In recent years, quantum dots nanomaterials have been considered the preferred sensing materials for the detection of heavy metal ions and pesticide residues by the interactions between quantum dots and various analytes, showing excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and interference, as well as reducing the cost of equipment compared with traditional measurement methods. In this review, the applications and sensing mechanisms of semiconductor quantum dots and carbon-based quantum dots are comprehensively discussed. The application of semiconductor quantum dots, carbon quantum dots, graphene quantum dots, and their nanocomposites that are utilized as fluorescence sensors are discussed in detailed, and the properties of various quantum dots for heavy metal ion and pesticide residue determination are also presented. The recent advances in and application perspectives regarding quantum dots and their composites are also summarized.

Abstract Background Autotetraploid Carassius auratus (4nRCC, 4n = 200, RRRR) was derived from the whole genome duplication of diploid red crucian carp (Carassius auratus red var.) (2nRCC, 2n = 100, RR). To investigate the genetic effects of tetraploidization, we analyzed DNA variation, epigenetic modification and gene expression changes in the Sox9a-Amh-Cyp19a1a regulatory cascade between 4nRCC and 2nRCC. Results We found that the Sox9a gene contained two variants in 2nRCC and four variants in 4nRCC. Compared with that in 2nRCC, DNA methylation in the promoter regions of the Amh and Cyp19a1a genes in 4nRCC was altered by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutations, which resulted in the insertions and deletions of CpG sites, and the methylation levels of the Sox9a, Amh and Cyp19a1a genes increased after tetraploidization. The gene expression level of the Sox9a-Amh-Cyp19a1a regulatory cascade was downregulated in 4nRCC compared with that in 2nRCC. Conclusion The above results demonstrate that tetraploidization leads to significant changes in the genome, epigenetic modification and gene expression in the Sox9a-Amh-Cyp19a1a regulatory cascade; these findings increase the extant knowledge regarding the effects of polyploidization.

Abstract Background Hox transcription factors are master regulators of animal development. Although highly conserved, they can contribute to the formation of novel biological characteristics when modified, such as during the generation of hybrid species, thus potentially serving as species-specific molecular markers. Here, we systematically studied the evolution of genomic sequences of Hox loci in an artificial allotetraploid lineage (4nAT, 4n = 200) derived from a red crucian carp (♀, RCC, 2n = 100) × common carp (♂, CC, 2n = 100) cross and its parents (RCC and CC). Results PCR amplification yielded 23 distinct Hox gene fragments from 160 clones in 4nAT, 22 fragments from 90 clones in RCC, and 19 fragments from 90 clones in CC. Sequence alignment of the HoxA3a and HoxC10a genes indicated both the inheritance and loss of paternal genomic DNA in 4nAT. The HoxA5a gene from 4nAT consisted of two subtypes from RCC and two subtypes from CC, indicating that homologous recombination occurred in the 4nAT hybrid genome. Moreover, 4nAT carried genomic pseudogenization in the HoxA10b and HoxC13a loci. Interestingly, a new type of HoxC9a gene was found in 4nAT as a hybrid sequence of CC and RCC by recombination in the intronic region. Conclusion The results revealed the influence of Hox genes during polyploidization in hybrid fish. The data provided insight into the evolution of vertebrate genomes and might be benefit for artificial breeding programs.

Developing an efficient method for chloramphenicol (CAP) detection is of great significance for food safety. Arginine (Arg) was selected as a functional monomer. Benefiting from its excellent electrochemical performance, which is different from traditional functional monomers, it can be combined with CAP to form a highly selective molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) material. It overcomes the shortcoming of poor MIP sensitivity faced by traditional functional monomers, and achieves high sensitivity detection without compounding other nanomaterials, greatly reducing the preparation difficulty and cost investment of the sensor. The possible binding sites between CAP and Arg molecules were calculated by molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). A low-cost, non-modified MIP electrochemical sensor was developed for the high-performance detection of CAP. The prepared sensor has a wide linear range from 1 × 10−12 mol L−1 to 5 × 10−4 mol L−1, achieves a very low concentration CAP detection, and the detection limit is 1.36 × 10−13 mol L−1. It also exhibits excellent selectivity, anti-interference, repeatability, and reproducibility. The detection of CAP in actual honey samples was achieved, which has important practical value in food safety.

Macrobrachium rosenbergii is an important aquaculture prawn that exhibits sexual dimorphism in growth, with males growing much faster than females. However, the mechanisms controlling these complex traits are not well understood. The nervous system plays an important role in regulating life functions. In the present work, we applied PacBio RNA-seq to obtain and characterize the full-length transcriptomes of the brains and thoracic ganglia of female and male prawns, and we performed comparative transcriptome analysis of female and male prawns. A total of 159.1-Gb of subreads were obtained with an average length of 2175 bp and 93.2% completeness. A total of 84,627 high-quality unigenes were generated and annotated with functional databases. A total of 6367 transcript factors and 6287 LncRNAs were predicted. In total, 5287 and 6211 significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found in the brain and thoracic ganglion, respectively, and confirmed by qRT-PCR. Of the 435 genes associated with protein processing pathways in the endoplasmic reticula, 42 DEGs were detected, and 21/26 DEGs with upregulated expression in the male brain/thoracic ganglion. The DEGs in this pathway are regulated by multiple LncRNAs in polypeptide folding and misfolded protein degradation in the different organs and sexes of the prawn. Our results provide novel theories and insights for studying the nervous system, sexual control, and growth dimorphism.

Abstract Background Distant hybridization can generate changes in phenotypes and genotypes that lead to the formation of new hybrid lineages with genetic variation. In this study, the establishment of two bisexual fertile carp lineages, including the improved diploid common carp (IDC) lineage and the improved diploid scattered mirror carp (IDMC) lineage, from the interspecific hybridization of common carp (Cyprinus carpio, 2n = 100) (♀) × blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala, 2n = 48) (♂), provided a good platform to investigate the genetic relationship between the parents and their hybrid progenies. Result In this study, we investigated the genetic variation of 12 Hox genes in the two types of improved carp lineages derived from common carp (♀) × blunt snout bream (♂). Hox gene clusters were abundant in the first generation of IDC, but most were not stably inherited in the second generation. In contrast, we did not find obvious mutations in Hox genes in the first generation of IDMC, and almost all the Hox gene clusters were stably inherited from the first generation to the second generation of IDMC. Interestingly, we found obvious recombinant clusters of Hox genes in both improved carp lineages, and partially recombinant clusters of Hox genes were stably inherited from the first generation to the second generation in both types of improved carp lineages. On the other hand, some Hox genes were gradually becoming pseudogenes, and some genes were completely pseudogenised in IDC or IDMC. Conclusions Our results provided important evidence that distant hybridization produces rapid genomic DNA changes that may or may not be stably inherited, providing novel insights into the function of hybridization in the establishment of improved lineages used as new fish resources for aquaculture.

Low spectral utilization and charge carrier compounding limit the application of photocatalysis in energy conversion and environmental purification, and the rational construction of heterojunction is a promising strategy to break this bottleneck. Herein, we prepared surface-engineered plasma Ag-modified α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 S-Scheme heterojunction photothermal catalysts by electrostatic self-assembly and light deposition strategy. The local surface plasmon resonance effect induced by Ag nanoparticles broadens the spectral response region and produces significant photothermal effects. The temperature of Ag/α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 powder is increased to 173 °C with irradiation for 90 s, ~3.2 times higher than that of the original g-C3N4. The formation of 2D/2D structured S-Scheme heterojunction promotes rapid electron-hole transfer and spatial separation. Ternary heterojunction construction leads to significant enhancement of photocatalytic performance of Ag/α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4, the H2 photocatalytic generation rate up to 3125.62 µmol g−1 h−1, which is eight times higher than original g-C3N4, and the photocatalytic degradation rate of tetracycline to reach 93.6%. This thermally assisted photocatalysis strategy improves the spectral utilization of conventional photocatalytic processes and provides new ideas for the practical application of photocatalysis in energy conversion and environmental purification.

Previously, a homodiploid goldfish-like fish (2n = 100; GF-L) was spontaneously generated by self-crossing a homodiploid red crucian carp-like fish (2n = 100; RCC-L), which was in turn produced via the distant hybridization of female koi carp (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus, KOC, 2n = 100) and male blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala, BSB, 2n = 48). The phenotypes and genotypes of RCC-L and GF-L differed from those of the parental species but were similar to diploid red crucian carp (2n = 100; RCC) and goldfish (2n = 100; GF), respectively. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) of the KOC, BSB, RCC-L, GF-L, and subsequent generations produced by self-crossing [the self-mating offspring of RCC-L (RCC-L-F2) to the self-mating offspring of RCC-L-F2 (RCC-L-F3) and the self-mating offspring of GF-L (GF-L-F2)]. Paternal mtDNA fragments were stably embedded in the mtDNAs of both lineages, forming chimeric DNA fragments. In addition to these chimeras, several nucleotide positions in the RCC-L and GF-L lineages differed from the parental bases, and were instead identical with RCC and GF, respectively. Moreover, RCC-L and GF-L mtDNA organization and nucleotide composition were more similar to those of RCC and GF, respectively, compared to parental mtDNA. Finally, phylogenetic analyses indicated that RCC-L and GF-L clustered with RCC and GF, not with the parental species. The molecular dating time shows that the divergence time of KOC and GF was about 21.26 Mya [95% highest posterior density (HPD): 24.41–16.67 Mya], which fell within the period of recent. The heritable chimeric DNA fragments and mutant loci identified in the mtDNA of the RCC-L and GF-L lineages provided important evidence that hybridizations might lead to changes in the mtDNA and the subsequent generation of new lineages. Our findings also demonstrated for the first time that the paternal mtDNA was transmitted into the mtDNA of homodiploid lineages (RCC-L and GF-L), which provided evidence that paternal DNA plays a role in inherited mtDNA. These evolutionary analyses in mtDNA suggest that GF might have diverged from RCC after RCC diverged from koi carp.

The Sox gene family encoded transcription factors that played key roles in developmental processes in vertebrates. To further understand the evolutionary fate of the Sox gene family in teleosts, the Sox genes were comprehensively characterized in fish of different ploidy levels, including blunt snout bream (2n = 48, Megalobrama amblycephala, BSB), goldfish (2n = 100, Carassius auratus red var., 2nRCC), and autotetraploid C. auratus (4n = 200, 4nRCC). The 4nRCC, which derived from the whole genome duplication (WGD) of 2nRCC, were obtained through the distant hybridization of 2nRCC (♀) × BSB (♂). Compared with the 26 Sox genes in zebrafish (2n = 50, Danio rerio), 26, 47, and 92 putative Sox genes were identified in the BSB, 2nRCC, and 4nRCC genomes, respectively, and classified into seven subfamilies (B1, B2, C, D, E, F, and K). Comparative analyses showed that 89.36% (42/47) of Sox genes were duplicated in 2nRCC compared with those in BSB, while 97.83% (90/92) of Sox genes were duplicated in 4nRCC compared with those in 2nRCC, meaning the Sox gene family had undergone an expansion in BSB, 2nRCC, and 4nRCC, respectively, following polyploidization events. In addition, potential gene loss, genetic variations, and paternal parent SNP locus insertion occurred during the polyploidization events. Our data provided new insights into the evolution of the Sox gene family in polyploid vertebrates after several rounds of WGD events.

Abstract Background Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus, GC), as the highest-output fish in China, is economically important. The production of gynogenetic grass carp (GGC) will provide important germplasm resource for producing improved GC. At present, knowledge regarding the heterologous sperm DNA in gynogenetic offspring is little. Thus, revealing paternal DNA in GGC at the molecular level would be highly significant for fish genetic breeding. Result In this study, ultraviolet-treated sperm of koi carp (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus, KOC, 2n = 100), was used to activate the eggs of GC (2n = 48). Afterwards, cold shock (0–4 °C) was administered for 12 min to double the chromosomes, resulting in GGC. No significant difference (p > 0.05) was found between GGC and GC in appearance, erythrocytes size and chromosome numbers. However, at the molecular level, a specific microsatellite DNA fragment (MFW1-gynogenetic grass carp, MFW1-G) derived from the paternal parent KOC was found to be transmitted into GGC. Conclusions For the first time, this study provided an evidence at the molecular level that the DNA fragment derived from the paternal parent occurred in GGC. This finding is of great significance for fish genetic breeding.

Distant hybridization leads to obvious changes in genotypes and phenotypes, giving rise to species with novel capabilities. However, the fusion of distinct genomes also polymerizes the DNA or gene variations that occur during the course of evolution. Knowledge of the early stages of post-hybridization evolution is particularly important. Here, we investigated the full-length (FL) transcriptomes and the sequences resulting from the genome resequencing of the red crucian carp-like homodiploid fish (RCC-L) and goldfish-like homodiploid fish (GF-L) derived from the interspecific hybridization of koi carp (KOC) and blunt snout bream (BSB) to provide molecular evidence for the hybrid origin of the goldfish (GF). We compared the orthologous genes in the transcriptomes of RCC-L and GF-L with those of KOC and BSB. We also mapped the orthologous genes to the common carp (CC) and BSB genomes and classified them into eight gene patterns in three categories (chimaera, mutant, and biparental origin genes). The results showed that 48.20% and 46.50% of the genes were chimaera and that 3.70% and 8.30% of the genes were mutations of orthologous genes in RCC-L and GF-L, respectively. In RCC-L and GF-L, 63.70% and 68.20% of the genetic materials were from KOC, and 12.30% and 11.90% of the genetic materials were from BSB. The sequences from the genome resequencing of RCC-L and GF-L were mapped to the genome sequences of CC and BSB, revealing that the similarities of both RCC-L and GF-L to the CC genome (92.52%, 90.18%) were obviously higher than to the BSB genome (50.33%, 49.18%), supporting the suggestion that the genomes of both RCC-L and GF-L were mainly inherited from KOC but had some DNA fragments from BSB. Overall, our results provide molecular biological evidence for the hybrid origin of red crucian carp (RCC) and GF.

Abstract Pd functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology, surface chemical states and surface area were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, respectively. The as-synthesized pure and Pd functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles were used to fabricate indirect-heating gas sensor, and the gas-sensing characteristics towards butane were investigated. At the optimum temperature, the sensors possess good response, selectivity, response/recovery, repeatability as well as long-term stability. Especially for the high response, the response of 7.5 mol% Pd functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles based sensor reaches 33.93 towards 3000 ppm butane, which is about 9 times higher than that of pure TiO2 nanoparticles. The response and recovery time are 13 and 8 s, respectively. Those values demonstrate the potential of using as-synthesized Pd functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles as butane gas detection, particularly in the dynamic monitoring. Apart from these, a possible mechanism related to the enhanced sensing performance is also investigated.

Abstract It is commonly believed that hybridization might lead to the formation of new polyploidy species, but it is unclear whether hybridization can produce a new homodiploid species. Here, we report the spontaneous occurrence of a new crucian carp-like homodiploid fish (2n = 100) that originated from the interspecific hybridization of female common carp (Cyprinus carpio, Cyprininae, 2n = 100) × male blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala, Cultrinae, 2n = 48). The phenotype and reproductive traits of this new crucian carp-like homodiploid fish were found to be very similar to those of the existing diploid species (diploid crucian carp; Carassius auratus). FISH and 5S rDNA analyses revealed that the genotype of the crucian carp-like homodiploid fish differs from those of its parents but is closely related to that of diploid crucian carp. The results provide evidence of the existence of a possible route through which the distant hybridization of this cross can generate crucian carp. The new type of homodiploid fish is of great value in fish genetic breeding and for studying the early evolutionary process.

The high crystallinity ZnO nanoparticles with an average particle diameter 30 nm have been successfully synthesized with a surfactant-mediated method. The cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) and the hydrous metal chlorides (ZnCl2⋅2H2O) appear to be the good candidates for obtaining a high yield of nanoparticles. The structural and morphological characterizations were carried out by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The resulting powders are highly crystalline and largely monodisperse ZnO nanoparticles. When used as a sensing material in gas sensor, it exhibits the high-performance gas sensing performances including high gas response, good selectivity, fast response/recovery time, good repeatability as well as stability towards low-ppm-level (10 to 100 ppm) n-butanol gas. At the optimal operating temperature (260 ºC), its gas response toward 100 ppm butanol is 174.8. The response and recovery time are 18 and 11 seconds, respectively. Theses findings not only provide a novel approach to fabricate ZnO nanoparticles via a surfactant-mediated method, but also explore a promising gas sensor towards n-butanol.

Based on the formation of an autotetraploid fish line (4nAUT, 4n = 200; F2–F11) derived from the distant hybridization of female Carassius auratus red var. (RCC, 2n = 100) × male Megalobrama amblycephala (BSB, 2n = 48), we produced autotriploid hybrids (3nAUT) by crossing females of RCC with males of 4nAUT and allotriploid hybrids (3nALT) by crossing females of Cyprinus carpio (CC, 2n = 100) with males of 4nAUT. The aim of this study was to comparatively investigate the reproductive characteristics of 3nALT and 3nAUT. We investigated morphological traits, chromosomal numbers, DNA content and gonadal development in 3nAUT and 3nALT. The results indicated both 3nAUT and 3nALT possessed 150 chromosomes and were triploid hybrids. The females and males of 3nALT and males of 3nAUT had abnormal gonadal development and could not generate mature eggs or sperm, but the females of 3nAUT had normal gonadal development and generated mature eggs at 2 years old. The females of 3nAUT generated different sizes of eggs, which fertilized with haploid sperm from RCC and formed viable diploid, triploid, and tetraploid offspring. The formation of these two kinds of triploid hybrids provides an ideal model for studying the reproductive traits of triploid hybrids, which is of great value in animal genetics and reproductive biology.

Polyploidization can significantly alter the size of animal gametes. Autotetraploid fish (RRRR, 4nRR = 200) (4nRR) possessing four sets of chromosomes were derived from whole-genome duplication in red crucian carp (RR, 2n = 100) (RCC). The diploid eggs of the 4nRR fish were significantly larger than the eggs of RCC. To explore the differences between the ovaries of these two ploidies of fishes at the molecular level, we compared the ovary transcriptome profiles of 4nRR fish and RCC and identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs). A total of 19,015 unigenes were differentially expressed between 4nRR fish and RCC, including 12,591 upregulated and 6,424 downregulated unigenes in 4nRR fish. Functional analyses revealed that eight genes (CDKL1, AHCY, ARHGEF3, TGFβ, WNT11, CYP27A, GDF7, and CKB) were involved in the regulation of cell proliferation, cell division, gene transcription, ovary development and energy metabolism, suggesting that these eight genes were related to egg size in 4nRR fish and RCC. We validated the expression levels of these eight DEGs in 4nRR fish and RCC using quantitative PCR. The study results provided insights into the regulatory mechanisms underlying the differences in crucian carp egg sizes.

Single crystal ZnO microrods are deposited on the surface of Zn plate through corrosion of Zn plate by H2O2 which is a green neutral reagent and easy to transform to H2O and O2. The structure and morphology of the obtained ZnO microrods were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. A thermodynamics mechanism was brought up. It was found that the transformation from Zn to ZnO is mainly attributed to that H2O2 possessing enough redox potential oxidizes the Zn. At the same time, the photodegradation properties of the obtained ZnO microrods array were also evaluated. The obtained wurtize-type ZnO microrods show an effective degradation for methyl orange under ultraviolet, and it keeps a good efficiency during the ten repeated photocatalytic tests. The results demonstrate a potential of obtained ZnO/Zn in real application of water pollutant photodegradation, making them promising candidates for the wastewater treatment.

Goldfish (Carassius auratus var., GF; 2n = 100) is the most popular ornamental fish in the world. It is assumed that GF evolved from red crucian carp (C. auratus red var., RCC; 2n = 100). However, this hypothesis lacks direct evidence. Furthermore, our knowledge of the role of hybridization in the formation of new species is sparse. In this study, goldfish-like fish with twin tails (GF-L; 2n = 100) was produced by self-mating red crucian carp-like fish (RCC-L; 2n = 100) derived from the distant crossing of koi carp (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus, KOC; 2n = 100; ♀) with blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala, BSB; 2n = 48; ♂). The phenotypes and genotypes of GF-L and RCC-L were very similar to those of GF and RCC, respectively. Microsatellite DNA and 5S rDNA analyses revealed that GF-L and RCC-L were closely related to GF and RCC, respectively. The presence of a twin tail of GF-L was related to a base mutation in chordinA from G in RCC-L to T in GF-L, indicating that the lineage of RCC-L and GF-L can be used to study gene variation and function. The sequences of 5S rDNA in GF-L and RCC-L were mapped to the genomes of CC and BSB, which revealed that the average similarities of both GF-L and RCC-L to CC were obviously higher than those to BSB, supporting that the genomes of both RCC-L and GF-L were mainly inherited from KOC. GF-L and RCC-L were homodiploids that were mainly derived from the genome of KOC with some DNA fragments from BSB. The reproductive traits of GF-L and RCC-L were quite different from those of their parents, but were the same as those of GF and RCC. RCC-L easily diversified into GF-L, suggesting that RCC and GF evolved within the same period in their evolutionary pathway. This study provided direct evidence of the KOC–RCC–GF evolutionary pathway that was triggered by distant hybridization, which had important significance in evolutionary biology and genetic breeding.

A new high performance fluorescence assay for detection of Ag+ based on CdS quantum dots (QDs) using L-Aspartic acid (L-Asp) as a stabilizer was proposed in this work. The CdS quantum dots conjugation with L-Aspartic acid (L-Asp@CdS QDs) were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal process. The QDs have a fluorescence emission band maximum at 595 nm with a quantum yield of 11%. The obtained CdS QDs exhibit a particle size of 1.63 ± 0.28 nm and look like quantum dot flowers. Basically, the fluorescence intensity of L-Asp@CdS QDs can be enhanced only upon addition of Ag+ and a redshift in the fluorescence spectrum was observed. Under optimum conditions, the fluorescence enhancement of L-Asp@CdS QDs appeared to exhibit a good linear relationship in between 100−7000 nM (R2 = 0.9945) with the Ag+ concentration, with a detection limit of 39 nM. The results indicated that the L-Asp@CdS QDs were well used in detection for Ag+ as fluorescence probe in aqueous solution with high sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, the sensing system has been applied in detection Ag+ in real water samples. The recovery test results were 98.6%~113%, and relative standard deviation (n = 5) is less than 3.6%, which was satisfactory.

The fluorescence intensity of N, S co-doped graphene quantum dots (N, S-GQDs) can be quenched by Fe3+ and Hg2+. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation and experimental studies indicate that the fluorescence quenching mechanisms for Fe3+ and Hg2+ detection are mainly attributed to the inner filter effect (IFE) and dynamic quenching process, respectively. The electronegativity difference between C and doped atoms (N, S) in favor to introduce negative charge sites on the surface of N, S-GQDs leads to charge redistribution. Those negative charge sites facilitate the adsorption of cations on the N, S-GQDs’ surface. Atomic population analysis results show that some charge transfer from Fe3+ and Hg2+ to N, S-GQDs, which relate to the fluorescent quenching of N, S-GQDs. In addition, negative adsorption energy indicates the adsorption of Hg2+ and Fe2+ is energetically favorable, which also contributes to the adsorption of quencher ions. Blue fluorescent N, S-GQDs were synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal treatment. Fluorescent lifetime and UV-vis measurements further validate the fluorescent quenching mechanism is related to the electron transfer dynamic quenching and IFE quenching. The as-synthesized N, S-GQDs were applied as a fluorescent probe for Fe3+ and Hg2+ detection. Results indicate that N, S-GQDs have good sensitivity and selectivity on Fe3+ and Hg2+ with a detection limit as low as 2.88 and 0.27 nM, respectively.

Pd-functionalized one-dimensional (1D) SnO2 nanostructures were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and shaddock peels were used as bio-templates to induce a 1D-fiber-like morphology into the gas sensing materials. The gas-sensing performances of sensors based on different ratios of Pd-functionalized SnO2 composites were measured. All results indicate that the sensor based on 5 mol % Pd-functionalized SnO2 composites exhibited significantly enhanced gas-sensing performances toward butane. With regard to pure SnO2, enhanced levels of gas response and selectivity were observed. With 5 mol % Pd-functionalized SnO2 composites, detection limits as low as 10 ppm with responses of 1.38 ± 0.26 were attained. Additionally, the sensor exhibited rapid response/recovery times (3.20/6.28 s) at 3000 ppm butane, good repeatability and long-term stability, demonstrating their potential in practical applications. The excellent gas-sensing performances are attributed to the unique one-dimensional morphology and the large internal surface area of sensing materials afforded using bio-templates, which provide more active sites for the reaction between butane molecules and adsorbed oxygen ions. The catalysis and “spillover effect” of Pd nanoparticles also play an important role in the sensing of butane gas as further discussed in the paper.

Citric acid capped CdS quantum dots (CA-CdS QDs), a new assembled fluorescent probe for copper ions (Cu2+), was synthesized successfully by a simple hydrothermal method. In this work, the fluorescence sensor for the detection of heavy and transition metal (HTM) ions has been extensively studied in aqueous solution. The results of the present study indicate that the obtained CA-CdS QDs could detect Cu2+ with high sensitivity and selectivity. It found that the existence of Cu2+ has a significant fluorescence quenching with a large red shifted (from greenish-yellow to yellowish-orange), but not in the presence of 17 other HTM ions. As a result, Cu2S, the energy level below the CdS conduction band, could be formed at the surface of the CA-CdS QDs and leads to the quenching of fluorescence of CA-CdS QDs. Under optimal conditions, the copper ions detection range using the synthesized fluorescence sensor was 1.0 × 10‒8 M to 5.0 × 10‒5 M and the limit of detection (LOD) is 9.2 × 10‒9 M. Besides, the as-synthesized CA-CdS QDs sensor exhibited good selectivity toward Cu2+ relative to other common metal ions. Thus, the CA-CdS QDs has potential applications for detecting Cu2+ in real water samples.
