The management of diabetic wounds presents a considerable challenge within the realm of clinical practice. Cellular-derived nanoparticles, or extracellular vesicles (EV), generated by human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) have been investigated as promising candidates for the treatment of diabetic wounds. Nevertheless, limitations on the yield, as well as the qualitative angiogenic properties of the EV produced, have been a persistent issue. In this study, a novel approach involving the use of various cell culture morphologies, such as cell spheroids, on hASC was used to promote both EV yield and qualitative angiogenic properties for clinical use, with an emphasis on the in vivo angiogenic properties exhibited by the EV. Moreover, an increase in the secretion of the EV was confirmed after cell spheroid culture. Furthermore, microRNA(miRNA) analysis of the produced EVs indicated an increase in the presence of wound healing-associated miRNAs on the cell spheroid EV. Analysis of the effectiveness of the treated EVs in vitro indicated a significant promotion of the biological function of fibroblast and endothelial cells, cell migration, and cell proliferation post-cell spheroid EV application. Meanwhile, in vivo experiments on diabetic rats indicated a significant increase in collagen production, re-epithelization, and angiogenesis of the diabetic wound after EV administration. In this investigation, we posit that the use of cell spheroids for the culture of hASC represents a novel approach to enhance the substantial secretion of extracellular vesicles while increasing the angiogenic wound healing properties. This innovation holds promise for augmenting the therapeutic potential of EVs in diabetic wound healing, aligning with the exigencies of clinical applications for these nanoparticles.

Abstract Nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical applications and cancer treatments due to their minute scale, multi-function, and long retention time. Among the various nanoparticles, the unique optical property derived from the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic nanoparticles is a primary reason that metallic nanoparticles are researched and applied. Copper and Iron nanoparticles have the potential to generate hydroxyl radicals in excess H2O2 via Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. On the other hand, gold nanoparticles equipped with a photosensitizer can transfer the energy of photons to chemical energy and enhance the production of singlet oxygen, which is suitable for cancer treatment. With the actions of these two reactive oxygen species in the tumor microenvironment, cell apoptosis can further be induced. In this work, we first synthesized dual metal nanoparticles with poly[styrene-alt-(maleic acid, sodium salt)(Cu ferrite oxide-polymer) by a simple one-step hydrothermal reduction reaction. Then, gold(III) was reduced and doped into the structure, which formed a triple metal structure, Au-doped Cu ferrite nanoparticles (Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer NPs). The metal ratio of the product could be controlled by manipulating the Fe/Cu ratio of reactants and the sequence of addition of reactants. The core–shell structure was verified by transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen generation ability of Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer was proved. The chemodynamic and photodynamic effect was measured, and the in vitro ROS generation was observed. Furthermore, the behavior of endocytosis by cancer cells could be controlled by the magnetic field. The result indicated that Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer core–shell nanoreactor is a potential agent for chemodynamic/photodynamic synergetic therapy.

Abstract Background We aimed to explore the association between long-term exposure to particulate matter ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components including fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood pressure, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and waist circumference among adults and elderly in south China. Methods We surveyed 6628 participants in the chronic disease and risk factors surveillance conducted in 14 districts of Guangdong province in 2015. MetS was defined based on the recommendation by the Joint Interim Societies’ criteria. We used the spatiotemporal land-use regression (LUR) model to estimate the two-year average exposure of ambient air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and O3) at individual levels. We recorded other covariates by using a structured questionnaire. Generalized linear mixed model was used for analysis. Results A 10-μg/m3 increase in the two-year mean PM2.5 exposure was associated with a higher risk of developing MetS [odd ratio (OR): 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01, 1.35], increased risk of fasting blood glucose level. Inspired by the theories of Tate and Zaera, a theoretical analysis model including the erosion of the projectile, the cracking of ceramic composites, and the deformation of metal backplate was established in this study to investigate the bulletproof capability of the ceramic composites under impact by an armor piecing projectile (AP). The analysis results were verified by ballistic tests. As for the ceramic composites, the volume of the cracked ceramic conoid and the change in the compressive strength were included. Regarding the deformation of the metal backplate, the plastic deformation work, the external work, and the conservation of kinetics were considered. Based on the thickness of the target plate, failure modes were separated into the plug type and the petal type. The ordinary differential equation solver of MATLAB, ode45, was adopted to solve relevant ordinary differential equations. In this study, the powder metallurgy was used to produce the Al2O3/ZrO2 multilayered ceramic composites of three layers; each layer was 3 mm in thickness. The ceramic composites were paired with a backplate made of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy with a thickness of either 1 mm or 4 mm. The ballistic tests were executed by using 0.30″ AP projectiles to impact the specimens. The results from theoretical model and ballistic tests were compared and shown consistent in the field of residual velocity, residual bullet mass, and the failure modes of the metal backplate.

Abstract Background This study used a short-term de-training model to mimic the physiological weight changes during the early retirement stage in Taekwondo (TKD) athletes. This study investigates whether the negative changes in body composition, blood lipid profiles, and metabolic biomarkers occur in elite collegiate TKD athletes when experiencing a two-months de-training period. Methods Fourteen collegiate Division Ι elite TKD athletes (age: 21.1 ± 0.2 years, BMI: 22.3 ± 1.1 kg/m2; 10 males and 4 females) participated in this study. The body composition, blood lipid profiles, atherogenic dyslipidemia indexes, metabolic biomarkers and baseline systemic inflammation states were measured before and after two-months de-training. Results The body weight and BMI did not change after de-training in these elite TKD athletes. This study investigated the ballistic resistance of a composite target plate fabricated by combining SiC ceramic with the Dyneema fiber. To achieve a light-weight target plate that conforms to the US National Institute of Justice level four (NIJ IV) standards, minimal areal density analysis was conducted to obtain the optimal SiC ceramic-Dyneema fiber thickness combination. This study used energy absorption to analyze the ballistic resistance of the target plates. To drastically reduce experimental costs, most of this work employed ANSYS/LS-DYNA software to conduct finite element numerical simulations. First, ballistic experiments that conformed to NIJ IV standards were conducted to verify the simulation parameter configurations. Subsequently, the correlation function of the relationship between the combined thickness of the composite material and its ballistic resistance was determined through the experimental design, which effectively reduced the simulation analysis time. According to simulation experiments and regression analysis, the equation for the relationship between the combined thickness of the composite material and its ballistic resistance was EAhc,hf=−6276.5+500.6hc+1512.6hf+30.7hchf−8.1hc2−113.6hf2, though there were limitations to its application. From the numerical analysis results, 8.1940 mm SiC ceramic and 6.9637 mm Dyneema fiber were determined to constitute the optimal thickness combination for a composite that features a minimal areal density and which conforms to NIJ IV standards. The combination was verified to be consistent with the numerical simulation analysis results.

During a manufacturing process, it is essential to quickly identify whether a tool needs to be replaced or adjusted, to ensure that production quality is not compromised. Therefore, the re-inspection of the product or first article inspection is an important process. Reducing the inspection time can reduce the time spent waiting for a product in the production line. This research aimed to design a system that can automatically and rapidly measure the dimensions of irregular tooth contours in the broaching process, to ensure cutting tools are replaced when necessary. This study developed an automatic machine for measuring the irregular tooth contours of large ring parts; the tooth root, tooth height, and tooth thickness of the workpiece are measured. The measurement diameter is approximately 200 mm, and the radial inspection accuracy is within ±20 μm; we aimed to reduce the detection time considerably. An optical micrometer and an automatic rotating platform were used in the measurement system. The workpieces to be measured were easy to install, and the eccentricity was automatically corrected by the system, thus saving time that would be taken to correct Abbe errors. This research successfully developed a rapid optical measurement system that can reduce the inspection time from 30 min to 60 s. Moreover, the maximum radial measurement error is −0.02 mm, which means that the measurement accuracy is within ±20 μm (total: 40 μm).
