Steve J. Watson was born in England in 1971. Watson, who worked as an audiologist in the NHS before starting his writing career, had the opportunity to closely observe the characters’ lives, which would be the subject of his works in the hospital where he worked. Based on the lives of Henry Gustav Molaison and Clive Wearing, both of whom have long-term memory problems Before I Go to Sleep was published in 2011. Molaison and Wearing’s years of illness had a profound effect on Watson. Similarly, Christine, the novel’s protagonist, also suffers from Molaison and Wearing syndrome. Waking up every morning with a new identity, Christine tries to make sense of what is happening around her until she falls asleep again. The forgetfulness she experiences alienates her from everything. Given that similar circumstances exist in real life, Watson aims to show the reader the effect of memory on identity through Christine. Studies on memory always play an essential role in fiction. Many literary texts concentrate on how characters remember their past and how this memory triggers the construction of their identity. In other words, many texts serve as representations of individual memories. While memories form one’s identity, amnesia leads to a new identity, life, personality and darkness. Therefore, for fiction writers, amnesia is a tool that emphasizes the relationship between identity and memory. Based on these facts, this study will focus on Christine, who wakes up every morning as a new person and will seek the answer to whether identity can be constructed without memory.

Objective: Hypercoagulopathy related to hyperinflammation may be responsible for mortality and organ failure in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients. Abnormal coagulation profiles were associated with poor outcomes. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of antithrombin (AT) levels in critically ill COVID-19 patients on the intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Materials and Methods: Four hundred ten critically ill COVID-19 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Inflammatory and conventional coagulation parameters as well as AT activity levels were recorded on the ICU admission. The clinical outcomes of patients were analyzed. Results: AT levels on the ICU admission were significantly lower in non-survivors than survivors (77.9% vs. 82.5%; p=0.027). Healthcare organisations take many precautions to ensure the safety of patients, the workplace and hospital staff, both because of health and safety legislation and to provide a quality service. Therefore, hospital safety climate scales are used to obtain important information. Aim: The aim of this study is based on Gershon, Karkashian, Grosch et al. (2000), and Smith, Zhao, Wang, Ho (2013) to adapt the reliability and validity of the 20-statement hospital safety climate scale. Method: The survey method was used in the research, and 401 students studying in health departments of 3 different foundation universities in Istanbul-Turkey were reached. SPSS for Windows 22.00 and AMOS 22.0 programs were used to analyse the data, confirmatory factor analysis of the scale was performed in AMOS program and Cronbach’s alpha values were calculated. In addition, AVE and CR values were calculated based on the size after confirmatory factor analysis. Results: In this study, four-stage CFA was applied to adjust the reliability and validity of the hospital safety climate scale. According to the statistical analyses applied, the fit values of the confirmatory factor analysis model found with the modifications in the fourth stage of the scale were within the limits of agreement, and finally 7 items of the 20-item scale were eliminated and a new structure consisting of four dimensions and 13 items was obtained. Results: It is considered that the hospital safety climate scale can be used in hospitals in Turkey, as its original dimensions are preserved in its structure consisting of 13 items obtained in the fourth stage.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) provides a safe and independent transfer of energy without the constraints of cables. The most suitable method for wireless charging of Electric Vehicles (EVs) is magnetic resonance coupling, which transfers energy in the near field. In this study, the effect of quality factor on the wireless charging system of an EV is investigated. After determining 85 kHz frequency, 20 kW power and 150 mm inter-coil distance, the design of the WPT system was realised according to the quality factor. It was observed that the quality factor affects the efficiency, critical air gap and voltage stress on capacitors. As the quality factor increases, the critical air gap increases and longer distances can be transmitted efficiently. However, as this factor increases, the voltage stress on the capacitors also increases. In this study, the critical air gap was determined according to the quality factor. Although high quality factor increases efficiency at high air gaps, it decreases efficiency in applications where air gaps are close. In fact, increasing the quality factor by increasing the inductance means increasing the internal resistance and this has been observed to reduce the maximum efficiency. In this study, the effects of Q factor on transmission power and transmission efficiency are investigated through experimental study and simulation.

Chronic pain occurs at epidemic levels throughout the population. Hypersensitivity to touch, is a cardinal symptom of chronic pain. Despite dedicated research for over a century, quantifying this hypersensitivity has remained impossible at scale. To address these issues, we developed the Chainmail Sensitivity Test (CST). Our results show that control mice spend significantly more time on the chainmail portion of the device than mice subject to neuropathy. Treatment with gabapentin abolishes this difference. CST-derived data correlate well with von Frey measurements and quantify hypersensitivity due to inflammation. Our study demonstrates the potential of the CST as a standardized tool for assessing mechanical hypersensitivity in mice with minimal operator input.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of employee’s emotional intelligence and work-related strain on anxiety and depression. In order to collect data, face-to-face questionnaires were administered to 210 healthcare workers who agreed to fill in the information required.The survey was conducted with the use of an easy sampling method. According to the findings: (1) the anxiety / depression (HAD) variable was positively affected by the work-related strain variable; (2) the HAD variable was negatively affected by emotional intelligence; (3)when HAD (a dependent variable) and two other variables (independent ones) were subjected to a stepwise multiple regression analysis, 45 % of the variance in the HAD variable was explained by the emotional intelligence and work-relatedstrain variables. The research was limited to 210 people working in health institutions operating in Istanbul region.

Organizational cynicism is one of the key factors that should be monitored in an organization since it is largely due to organizational reasons and it can be expressed that some of the most important reasons are human resources management (HRM) practices and organizational justice concepts. Although there are some researches on the bilateral relations of these variables with each other, in the literature, no study that examined the relationships and effects be-tween these three concepts, at the same time, has been observed. Therefore, this study focuses on the relationship between perceived HRM practices and organizational cynicism with the mediating role of perceived organizational justice. In this study, descriptive approach was applied and to test the research model; a quantitative method and questionnaire-based survey were conducted. The survey data were collected from the employees across local administra-tions (municipalities) in a developing country, Northern Cyprus, by using convenience sampling method. In order to test the conceptual framework, SPSS v24, Hayes Process v3.4 and Amos v22.0 Programs were used. In this context, in SPSS program, exploratory factor analyses and linear regression analysis were performed. Besides, Amos Program was used for confirmatory factor analyses. In addition, Hayes Process analysis was applied to determine the mutual relationships between variables and the direct and indirect effects between each other. According to the results of the analysis, it is observed that the perceived organizational justice mediates the relationship between perceived human resources management practices and organizational cynicism. In other words, the results proved that effective application of contemporary HRM approaches boosts the perception of organizational justice and at the same time helps to reduce organizational cynicism and also high perceived organizational justice reduces organizational cynicism. In addition, in this study, the scale developed by Singh (2004), which was widely used in the measurement of HRM practices in the literature, was further developed by the addition of work conditions, and at last it has been transformed into a more comprehensive scale that can be used in both public and private sectors. Thus, it has been made more appropriate for today's HRM practices and theory. Consequently, this study contributes to the relevant theoretical literature and has some important implications for managers.

High dietary fructose intake causes a metabolic disorder and augments the risk of chronic kidney disease most likely due to oxidative stress. Probiotics could have antioxidant, antiinflammatory and immunoregulatory properties. The present study examined the influence of Lactobacillus helveticus and Lactobacillus plantarum supplementation on dietary fructose-induced metabolic changes and renal antioxidant/oxidant status of rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups as follows: control; fructose; fructose plus L. helveticus; fructose plus L. plantarum. Fructose was given to the rats as a 20% solution in drinking water for 15 weeks. The probiotic supplementation was applied by gastric gavage once a day for six weeks. Several metabolic parameters in the plasma, gene and protein expressions of the main antioxidant enzymes in renal tissues of rats were measured. Dietary fructose-induced elevations in plasma insulin, triglyceride, VLDL, creatinine as well as renal urea levels were alleviated after treatment with L. helveticus and L. plantarum. Moreover, L. helveticus and L. plantarum supplementation recovered the changes in renal protein expression level of SOD1, SOD2 and CAT. In conclusion, supplementation with L. helveticus and L. plantarum has an improving effect on specific metabolic parameters and renal antioxidative enzymes in a fructose-induced metabolic disorder.

Şehir içi ulaşım sorunlarının çözümüne ilişkin planlama yaklaşımlarında bireylerin yolculuk taleplerinin yanı sıra her türden malların hareketlerinin kestirimlerinin de dikkate alınması gerekmektedir. Bu gereklilik her ölçekteki ve özellikle yoğun bölgesel ilişkiler içeren şehirler için farklı düzey ve biçimlerde ortaya çıkmaktadır. Üretim ve tüketim ilişkilerinin yanı sıra ekonomi nedeniyle de şehir yol ağlarının doğrudan yük taşımacılığından etkilendiği görülmektedir. Çalışma bu etkilenmenin şehir planlama ve ulaştırma sürecinde ele alınıp ileriye dönük çözümler kapsamında nasıl değerlendirilebileceğine ait bir örnek yaklaşım olarak düşünülmüştür. Örnek olarak İzmir merkez şehirsel alanı alınmıştır. Bu alan yaklaşık olarak İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi'nin 3030 sayılı yasa dönemindeki yetki ve sorumluluk sınırlarını kapsamaktadır. Yük yaratım merkezlerinin şehir içindeki konumları ve ağırlıkları, yük hareketi niteliğindeki toplam taleplerin ortaya çıkmasına doğrudan neden olmaktadır. Aynı zamanda transit trafik içinde de yoğun bir biçimde yük taşıtlarının bulunduğu görülmektedir. Şehir içi yol ağlarının özellikleri nedeniyle yük taşıtlarının her kademedeki yollar üzerinde görülmesi de olasıdır. Bu nedenlerle yük taşıt hareketleri yoğunluklarının, yük yaratım merkezlerinin konum ve ağırlıklarıyla ilişkilendirilmesi düşünülmüştür. Yük hareketlerinin çeşitli nedensellik ilişkileriyle ölçümünün geliştirilebileceği, bu amaçla kullanılabilir parametrelerin var olabileceği, bu çalışmanın varsayımları olarak kabul edilmiştir. Çalışmada İzmir'deki yük taşımacılığının ölçümü, metropoliten iş merkezini ve bazı kümeleşme alanlarını çevreleyen sınırlardan geçen taşıtların yoğunluğu ile bu alanların sınırları içindeki yük yaratım merkezlerinin konumları ve ağırlıkları birlikte değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Yaklaşımın aşamaları ise; İzmir'de yük yaratım merkezlerinin türleri, konumları, ağırlıkları ve karayolu trafiğinde yaklaşık ölçüm değerlerinin saptanması. İş merkezi çevresinden geçen sınır ile bazı kümeleşme alanlarının sınırlarının çizilmesi, sayım noktalarının belirlenmesi. İç trafik açısından yük taşıt hareketlerinin yoğunluklarının saptanması, olarak belirlenmiştir.

Background: Studies with single-session hyperbaric oxygen exposures have shown that HBO-induced oxidative stress is proportional to exposure pressure and duration. Since the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen mainly depends on repetitive exposures, this study aimed to investigate the oxidative effect of hyperbaric oxygen administered for 5 to 40 sessions. Methods: Sixty rats were divided into one control and 6 study groups. Study groups were exposed to 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 daily consecutive 2.8 atm/90 min hyperbaric oxygen sessions. Animals were sacrificed 24 h after the last hyper­baric oxygen administration. Malondialdehyde and carbonylated protein levels as well as superoxide dismutase activities were determined in isolated rat erythrocytes. Results: Carbonylated protein levels increased significantly after just 5 hyperbaric oxygen exposures; reached a peak level with 10 exposures; were still significantly higher than controls after 15 sessions; and decreased to normal limits after 20 exposures. Malondialdehyde levels were found to be significantly increased in the 10 to 30, but not in the 5 and 40-session groups. Superoxide dismutase activity showed elevated levels only in the 5 and 10 times hyperbarical oxygen- exposed groups. Conclusions: The suppressed oxidative stress level after 40 exposures suggests an effective endogenous antioxidant defense in repetitive HBO administrations.

Aldose reductase (AR) has been implicated in the etiology of diabetic complications. Under diabetic conditions, the elevated vascular glucose level causes an increased flux through the polyol pathway, which induces functional and morphological changes associated with secondary diabetic complications such as cataract, neuropathy, and nephrop­athy. Oxidative stress, antioxidants, and the polyol pathway have recently been found to be linked in pathological states. A large number of structurally different compounds have been studied as potent in vitro AR inhibitors (ARIs). However, with few exceptions, these compounds did not show clinical benefit, and some even produced serious side effects. In view of the ARI activity of certain indole derivative compounds and antioxidant properties of melatonin, we investigated some indole-based analogs of melatonin derivatives. Antioxidant and ARI activity tests were applied to nine indole derivatives that are substituted at the third and fifth positions. Also, the relationship between ARI and antioxidant enzyme activity is discussed.
