Abstract Background Preoperative carbohydrate loading in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery is an independent predictor of postoperative outcomes. By reducing the impact of surgical stress response, fasting-induced insulin resistance is modulated. As a clear fluid, consuming carbohydrate drink is safe up to 2 h preoperatively. Widely practiced in abdominal surgeries, its implementation in hip fracture surgeries is yet to be recognized. This study aimed to identify the feasibility of preoperative carbohydrate loading in hip fracture surgery and assess its clinical effects. Methods This was a randomized controlled, open labelled trial. Patients ≥ 65 years old without diabetes mellitus, has hip fracture were recruited in a tertiary hospital between November 2020 and May 2021. The intervention was carbohydrate loading versus standard preoperative fasting. Results Thirty-four ASA I-III patients (carbohydrate loading and control, n = 17 each), mean age 78 years (SEM ± 1.5), mean body mass index 23.7 (SEM ± 0.6 kg/m2) were recruited. Analysis for feasibility of carbohydrate loading (n = 17) demonstrated attrition rate of 29% (n = 5). Otherwise, all recruited patients were compliant (100% compliance) with no adverse events reported. There was no significant difference among groups in the postoperative nausea and vomiting, pain score, fatigue level, muscle strength, postoperative infection and length of hospital stay assessed at 24–48 h postoperatively. Conclusion The implementation of preoperative carbohydrate loading was found to be feasible preoperatively in hip fracture surgeries but requires careful coordination among multidisciplinary teams. An adequately powered randomized controlled study is needed to examine the full benefits of preoperative carbohydrate loading in this group of patients. In the southeast coastal area of China, existing railway lines, constructed long ago with low construction standards for railway subgrades, face significant impacts from the construction of soft ground improvement for newly built railway lines. Through on-site monitoring of foundation treatment construction, it is crucial to select the soft ground improvement method with minimal construction impact to ensure the operation safety of the existing railway. Based on the on-site monitoring data of the excess pore water pressure, surface displacement, and deep displacement in the construction of soft ground improvement, the study assesses the extent and magnitude of construction impact. The key findings include: (1) Ranking of construction impact magnitude: High-pressure jet grouting column (pipe pile) > deep cement mixing column > MJS column > geosynthetic reinforced column; (2) Construction impact range: deep cement mixing column, high-pressure jet grouting column, geosynthetic reinforced column and MJS column are about 5 m, 10 m, 3 m and 4 m, respectively. The construction disturbance of high-pressure jet grouting pile, pipe pile, polymer bag grouting pile and deep cement mixing column are compared based on the differences of excess pore water pressure, surface displacement, deep displacement and construction disturbance range. It is provided a basis for comparison and selection of schemes for soft ground improvement of new railway lines adjacent to existing railways. This optimization effectively controls the construction disturbance of the soft ground treatment of the new line and ensures the safety of the existing railway.

In indigenous populations where soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infections are endemic, STH parasites (i.e., Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworms) often co-exist and co-evolve with the gut microbiota of their human hosts. The association between STH infections and the gut microbiota of the colonized human hosts has been established, but few studies explored the gut microbiota of the parasites. This preliminary study aimed to characterize the microbiota of the STH parasite for further understanding the STH parasite-host relationship. The gut microbial genomic DNA from four adult A. lumbricoides worms recovered from a six-year-old indigenous Negrito boy living in an STH-endemic village in Perak, Peninsular Malaysia was extracted and sequenced for the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA. The microbiota profiles of these worms were characterized and compared with the gut microbiota of their human host, including the profiles from four STH-positive and three STH-negative individuals from the same tribe and village. The gut microbial structure of A. lumbricoides was found to be differed significantly from their human host. The worms contained lower gut bacterial abundance and diversity than human. This difference was evident in the beta diversity analysis which showed a clear separation between the two sample types. While both Firmicutes (52.3%) and Bacteroidetes (36.6%) are the predominant phyla followed by Proteobacteria (7.2%) in the human gut, the microbiota of Ascaris gut is highly dominated by Firmicutes, constituting 84.2% relative abundance (mainly from the genus Clostridium), followed by Proteobacteria (11.1%), Tenericutes (1.8%) and Bacteroidetes (1.5%). The parasites were also found to alter the microbial structure of the human gut following infection based on the relatively higher bacterial abundance in STH-positive versus STH-negative participants. Further studies with a greater number of Ascaris adults and human hosts are needed to confirm the gut microbiota profiles.

Abstract Background While microbiomes in industrialized societies are well characterized, indigenous populations with traditional lifestyles have microbiomes that are more akin to those of ancient humans. However, metagenomic data in these populations remains scarce, and the association with soil-transmitted helminth infection status is unclear. Here, we sequenced 650 metagenomes of indigenous Malaysians from five villages with different prevalence of helminth infections. Results Individuals from villages with higher prevalences of helminth infections have more unmapped reads and greater microbial diversity. Microbial community diversity and composition were most strongly associated with different villages and the effects of helminth infection status on the microbiome varies by village. Longitudinal changes in the microbiome in response to albendazole anthelmintic treatment were observed in both helminth infected and uninfected individuals. Inference of bacterial population replication rates from origin of replication analysis identified specific replicating taxa associated with helminth infection. Conclusions Our results indicate that helminth effects on the microbiota were highly dependent on context, and effects of albendazole on the microbiota can be confounding for the interpretation of deworming studies. Furthermore, a substantial quantity of the microbiome remains unannotated, and this large dataset from an indigenous population associated with helminth infections is a valuable resource for future studies. Abstract Background Many institutions withheld elective lists and triaged surgeries during the peak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. As a result, older surgical patients have had to wait for rescheduled dates in a long waitlist. This study aimed to identify the psychological impact in these patients when they returned for surgery. Methods This was a cross-sectional study which included 153 patients aged ≥ 65 years undergoing elective surgery. Trained interviewers recruited and assessed psychological status pre-operatively with two validated questionnaires - Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Specific questions were asked about their postponed surgeries, appetite and fear. Results A total of 36 out of 153 (23.5%) patients had their procedures deferred during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Postponed cases were significantly based on the nature of surgery (p = 0.002), cancer diagnosis (p = 0.006) and surgical specialty (p = 0.023). Median HADS scores were higher for patients who were postponed (2.00 versus 4.00 for anxiety, p = 0.180 and 0.00 versus 1.00 for depression, p = 0.424) although no statistical significance was shown. During the progression of type 2 diabetes, total body zinc deficiency disrupts the formability of the electron-dense core in beta-cell vesicles, but the mechanism is unclear. Using fluorescence imaging, transmission electron microscopy and pharmacokinetics assays, we established a strong link between an increasing concentration of free zinc and the formability enhancement of the dense core electron density. Thus, our results highlight a mechanism by which zinc supplementation enhances the maturation of dense cores and restores the secretion of insulin in two diabetic mouse models both in vitro and in vivo. This study provides a potential research direction for investigating the etiology and nutrition of zinc in the management of type 2 diabetes.

In Malaysia, soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections still persist among indigenous communities. In the past, local studies have focused mostly on epidemiologic aspects of STH infections with a scarcity of information on the efficacy of deworming treatment. The present study consisted of 2 phases: a cross-sectional phase on current epidemiological status and risk factors of STH infections and a longitudinal study over 6 weeks on triple dose albendazole efficacy against STH infections. A total of 253 participants were recruited at baseline and a pre-tested questionnaire was administered to obtain information on socio-demographics, environmental and behavioural risk factors. Stool samples were evaluated using a modified Kato-Katz technique. Cure rate (CR) and egg reduction rate (ERR) were assessed at 3 weeks following a 3-day course of 400mg albendazole treatment and infection status were observed again at 6 weeks. Baseline positivity of trichuriasis, ascariasis and hookworm infections were 56.1%, 11.9% and 20.2%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed age below 18 years old (P = 0.004), without latrine in house (P = 0.042) and indiscriminate defecation (P = 0.032) were associated with STH infections. In the longitudinal study (N = 89), CR for trichuriasis was 64.6%, while CR of 100% was observed for both ascariasis and hookworm. ERR was above 90% for all three STH species. A rapid increased of Trichuris trichiura egg output was observed at 6 weeks. In conclusion, STH infections are highly prevalent among indigenous communities. Children and teenagers, poor sanitation and hygiene behaviour were determinants for STH infections. Triple dose albendazole is found to be efficacious against Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm infections but has moderate curative effect with high ERR against T. trichiura. Although triple dose albendazole regimen has logistic challenges and may not be a routine option, consideration of this treatment regime may still be necessary in selective communities to reduce high intensity of T. trichiura infection.

Graphene exhibits great potential for the corrosion protection of metals, because of its low permeability and high chemical stability. To enhance the anticorrosion ability of Cu, we use plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to prepare a vertically oriented few-layer graphene (VFG) coating on the surface of Cu. The Cu coated with VFG shows superhydrophobic surface with a contact angle of ~150°. The VFG coating is used to significantly increase the anticorrosion ability, enhanced by the chemical stability and the unique geometric structure of vertically oriented graphene. The corrosion rate of VFG-Cu was about two orders of magnitude lower than that of bare Cu. This work highlights the special synthesized way of PECVD and superhydrophobic surface of vertical structures of graphene as coatings for various applications.

Tinea imbricata is a unique fungal skin disease that mostly affects indigenous populations in Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Central and South America. The control and management of this disease among these communities are challenging given their remote locations, certain traditional practices, and severe malnutrition status. To date, there are only a handful of reports published globally, which highlights the need for a more holistic approach in addressing this skin disease. Several bodies of evidence and reports have shown that host genetic factors have a profound influence on the pathogenesis of tinea imbricata, while skin microbiota is touted to have a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. However, there are limited studies of how host genetics and skin microbiota impact disease susceptibility in the host. To improve the understanding of this disease and to find possible long-term effective treatment among the affected indigenous communities, a comprehensive literature review is needed. Hence, this review paper aims to present the current status of tinea imbricata among the indigenous communities, together with published findings on the possible underlying reasons for its specific distribution among these communities, particularly on the ways in which host skin microbiota and host genetics affect occurrence and disease patterns. This information provides valuable insights for future research by highlighting the current knowledge gaps in these areas.

In this paper, the habitat of Cerasus clarofolia was investigated and analysed, under natural conditions the growth of Cerasus clarofolia is influenced by low temperature of winter. The seeds of Cerasus clarofolia need low-temperature to germination. The seedling with 4 leaves grew well after introduction, the survival rate reached 79.7%. Planting with clear water was found easier to take roots, the roots were come from the lenticels, under diffent environmental conditions, the lenticels formed morphological, physiological differences are the important factors take roots for Cerasus.

【Abstract】 Objective: To study the anatomical and biomechanical features of the interosseous membrane (IOM) of the cadaveric forearm. Methods: Ten radius-IOM-ulna structures were har- vested from fresh-frozen cadavers to measure the length, width and thickness of the tendinous portion of IOM. Then, the tendinous portion was isolated along with the ulnar and radial ends to which the tendon attached after measurement. The proximal portion of the radius and the distal portion of the ulna were embedded and fixed in the dental base acrylic resin powder. The embedded specimen was clamped and fixed by the MTS 858 test machine using a 10 000 N load cell for the entire tensile test. IOM was stretched at a speed of 50 mm/min until it was ruptured. The load-displacement curve was depicted with a computer and the maximum load and stiffness were recorded at the same time. Results: The IOM of the forearm was composed of three portions: central tendinous tissue, membranous tis- sue and dorsal affiliated oblique cord. IOM was stretched at a neutral position, and flexed at pronation and supination positions. The tendinous portion of IOM was lacerated in 6 specimens when the point of the maximum load reached to 1 021.50 N± 250.13 N, the stiffness to 138.24 N/m±24.29 N/m, and the length of stretch to 9.77 mm±1.77 mm. Fracture occurred at the fixed end of the ulna before laceration of the tendinous portion in 4 specimens when the maximum load was 744.40 N±109.85 N, the stiffness was 151.17 N/m±30.68 N/m, and the length of the stretch was 6.51 mm±0.51 mm. Conclusions: The IOM of the forearm is a structure having ligamentous characteristics between the radius and the ulna. It is very important for maintenance of the longitu- dinal stability of the forearm. The anatomical and biome- chanical data can be used as an objective criterion for evalu- ating the reconstructive method of IOM of the forearm. Key words: Forearm; Anatomy; Biomechanics

Abstract Multiple myeloma is a hematological malignancy arising from immunoglobulin-secreting plasma cells. It remains poorly understood how chromatin rewiring of regulatory elements contributes to tumorigenesis and therapy resistance in myeloma. Here we generate a high-resolution contact map of myeloma-associated super-enhancers by integrating H3K27ac ChIP-seq and HiChIP from myeloma cell lines, patient-derived myeloma cells and normal plasma cells. Our comprehensive transcriptomic and phenomic analyses prioritize candidate genes with biological and clinical implications in myeloma. We show that myeloma cells frequently acquire SE that transcriptionally activate an oncogene PPP1R15B, which encodes a regulatory subunit of the holophosphatase complex that dephosphorylates translation initiation factor eIF2α. Epigenetic silencing or knockdown of PPP1R15B activates pro-apoptotic eIF2α-ATF4-CHOP pathway, while inhibiting protein synthesis and immunoglobulin production. Pharmacological inhibition of PPP1R15B using Raphin1 potentiates the anti-myeloma effect of bortezomib. Our study reveals that myeloma cells are vulnerable to perturbation of PPP1R15B-dependent protein homeostasis, highlighting a promising therapeutic strategy.

Abstract Background Existing evidence suggests that children and adolescents who had experienced childhood maltreatment (CM) are at higher suicidal risk. However, the mediation role of resilience in this association remains unclear. We aim to investigate the mediation via resilience in the associations between CM and three suicidal risk indicators (suicidal ideation, SI; suicidal plan, SP; suicidal attempt, SA) among a large sample of Chinese children and adolescents. Methods A population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in southwestern China Yunnan province. A total of 9723 children and adolescents were included and analyzed by using a multi-stage stratified cluster sampling design. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to explore the associations between CM, resilience, and the three suicidal risk indicators, dose-response trends further elucidated by using the restricted cubic splines. Path models were adopted to estimate the mediation of resilience. Results The estimated prevalence rates for one-year SI, SP and SA were 32.86% (95% CI: 31.93–33.80%), 19.36% (95% CI: 18.57–20.16%) and 9.07% (95% CI: 8.51–9.66%). After adjustment, CM significantly associated with all 3 suicidal risk indicators, and the odds ratios (ORs) were 2.13 (95% CI: 1.91–2.37), 2.45 (95% CI: 2.13–2.81), and 3.61 (95% CI: 2.90–4.52) for one-year SI, SP, and SA, respectively. Path models revealed that resilience significantly mediated the associations between CM and the three suicidal risk indicators, and among all dimensions of resilience, family support presented the strongest mediation consistently. Conclusions Our study results suggest that intervention measures which focusing on improving psychological resilience might be effective in reducing suicidal risk for children and adolescents who had experienced maltreatment. Prospective studies should be done to corroborate our findings.

Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) stands as most common and serious complication of Hirschsprung's disease. Variations in the microbiota composition may account for the differences observed between HAEC and healthy individuals, offering crucial insights into the disease's pathogenesis. Here, we performed a study to changes in the gut microbiome using 16sRNA amplicon sequencing in a cohort of HAEC patients (n = 16) and healthy controls (n = 14). Our result revealed a significant disparity in beta diversity between the two groups. Following correction for false discovery rate, a rank–sum test at the genus level indicated a notable decrease in the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Veillonella, whereas the Enterococcus genus exhibited a substantial increase in HAEC, a finding further supported by additional linear discriminant analysis effect size analysis. Functional analysis showed that putative transport and catabolism, digestive system, and metabolism of cofactors and vitamins were proved to be some abundant KOs (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes [KEGG] orthologs) in healthy group, whereas infectious disease, membrane transport, and carbohydrate metabolism were the three KOs with the higher abundance in the HAEC group. Our data increased our insight into the HAEC, which may shed further light on HAEC pathogenesis. Our study firstly demonstrated the difference between fecal microbiota of HAEC patients and healthy individuals, which made a step forward in the understanding of the pathophysiology of HAEC.

Abstract Background The role of lifestyle factors and their relative contributions to the development and mortality of cardio-renal-metabolic multimorbidity (CRMM) remains unclear. Methods A study was conducted with 357,554 UK Biobank participants. CRMM was defined as the coexistence of two or three cardio-renal-metabolic diseases (CRMDs), including cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes (T2D) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The prospective study examined the associations of individual and combined lifestyle scores (diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep duration and social connection) with longitudinal progression from healthy to first cardio-renal-metabolic disease (FCRMD), then to CRMM, and ultimately to death, using a multistate model. Subsequently, quantile G-computation was employed to assess the relative contribution of each lifestyle factor. Results During a median follow-up of 13.62 years, lifestyle played crucial role in all transitions from healthy to FCRMD, then to CRMM, and ultimately to death. The hazard ratios (95% CIs) per score increase were 0.91 (0.90, 0.91) and 0.90 (0.89, 0.91) for healthy to FCRMD, and for FCRMD to CRMM, and 0.84 (0.83, 0.86), 0.87 (0.86, 0.89), and 0.90 (0.88, 0.93) for mortality risk from healthy, FCRMD, and CRMM, respectively. Among the seven factors, smoking status contributed to high proportions for the whole disease progression, accounting for 19.88–38.10%. High-risk diet contributed the largest proportion to the risk of transition from FCRMD to CRMM, with 22.53%. Less-frequent social connection contributed the largest proportion to the risk of transition from FCRMD to death, with 28.81%. When we further consider the disease-specific transitions, we find that lifestyle scores had slightly stronger associations with development to T2D than to CVD or CKD. Conclusions Our study indicates that a healthy lifestyle may have a protective effect throughout the longitudinal progression of CRMM, informing more effective management and treatment. Smoking status, diet, and social connection played pivotal roles in specific disease transitions.

AIM: To analyze the changes of the dominant eye in myopic patients after small incision lenticule extraction(SMILE)and its effect on visual quality.METHODS: Prospective clinical study. A total of 140 patients(280 eyes)who underwent SMILE operation to correct myopia in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from June to December 2022 were selected. They were divided into dominant eye transformation group(46 cases, 92 eyes)and non-transformation group(94 cases, 188 eyes)according to whether the dominant eye transformation occurred during the follow-up in postoperative 3 mo. The uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA)of the two groups was evaluated, the subjective visual quality was evaluated by the quality of life impact of refractive correction(QIRC)scale, and the objective visual quality was evaluated by measuring the high-order aberrations of the whole eye before and at 1 and 3 mo after surgery.RESULTS: Before SMILE, the right type of dominant eye was 105 cases, left-type was 35 cases. There were 46 cases had change at 1 mo postoperatively, and there was no new change at 3 mo after operation than 1 mo after operation. There was no significant difference in UCVA and QIRC scale score between the two groups preoperatively and at 1 and 3 mo postoperatively(P>0.05). Comparison of the dominant eye between the two groups: the total higher-order aberrations and spherical aberrations at 3 mo postoperatively were significantly higher than those in the non-transformed group(P=0.030, 0.046); Comparison of the non-dominant eye between the two groups: trefoil in the transformed group at 1 mo postoperatively was significantly higher than that in the non-transformed group(P=0.008). The binocular difference of trefoil in the transition group was significantly higher than that in the non-transition group at 1 mo after surgery(P=0.022), with no differences in the rest parameters.CONCLUSION: Some patients may experience a change in the dominant eye after SMILE surgery, with no significant impact on subjective visual quality. The decrease of objective visual quality in the early postoperative period may be an associated factor in the dominant eye transformation.

AIM: To describe the characteristics of peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structure (PHOMS) in myopic children and to investigate factors associated with PHOMS. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 101 eyes of 101 children (age ≤17y) with myopia. All included patients underwent comprehensive clinical examination. Optic nerve canal parameters, including disc diameter, optic nerve head (ONH) tilt angle, and border tissue angle were measured using serial enhanced-depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). Based on the optic disc drusen consortium's definition of PHOMS, eyes were classified as PHOMS group and non-PHOMS group. PHOMS was categorized according to height. RESULTS: Sixty-seven (66.3%) eyes were found with PHOMS. Small PHOMS could only be detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Medium PHOMS could be seen with blurred optic disc borders corresponding to OCT. The most frequent location of PHOMS was at the nasosuperior (91%, 61 of 67 eyes) to ONH disc. ObjectiveTo investigate the correlation between the swelling rate of brain volume within the first 48 h after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and the subsequent development of delayed cerebral ischemia.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with spontaneous aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage admitted to the Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between January 2020 and January 2023. The clinical data, treatment outcomes, and imaging data were analyzed. Brain volume was evaluated using 3D-Slicer software at two time points post-hemorrhage: within the first 24 h and between 24 and 48 h. The swelling rate of brain volume was defined as the ratio of the absolute difference between two measurements to the smaller of values. Patients were categorized into two groups based on established diagnostic criteria of delayed cerebral ischemia. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors influencing delayed cerebral ischemia.ResultsA total of 140 patients were enrolled in this study. 46 patients experienced delayed cerebral ischemia after bleeding. The swelling rate of brain volume was larger in the DCI group (10.66 ± 8.45) compared to the non-DCI group (3.59 ± 2.62), which showed a statistically significant difference. Additionally, advanced age, smoking history, history of hypertension, loss of consciousness, poor Hunt-Hess grade, high mFisher score, brain volume within 24 h, and IVH were also statistically different between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the swelling rate of brain volume was an independent risk factor for DCI with adjusting the advanced age, smoking history, history of hypertension, poor Hunt-Hess grade, high mFisher score, brain volume within 24 h, and IVH.ConclusionBrain volume significantly increased in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage during the early phase (within 48 h post-onset). The larger swelling rate of brain volume is an independent risk factor for the development of delayed cerebral ischemia, and it may hold significant predictive value for the incidence of delayed cerebral ischemia.

In the digital era, the significance of cryptographic algorithms has grown significantly within the realm of cybersecurity. This research presents an innovative approach to image encryption that eliminates the security limitations of the conventional one-dimensional logistic mapping. This approach relies on an enhanced two-dimensional logistic-fraction hybrid chaotic mapping (2D-LFHCM) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) computing. Initially, the improved 2D-LFHCM is utilized to effectively scramble the image by incorporating chaotic sequences. Then, two novel algebraic DNA computing rules are introduced to enhance diffusion encryption. Experimental findings show that this approach offers superior security performance, even with renowned attacks.

The current lack of standardized testing methods to assess the binding isotherms of ions in cement and concrete research leads to uncontrolled variability in these results. In this study, an open-source and low-cost apparatus, named OpenHW3, is proposed to accurately measure the binding isotherms of ions in various cementitious material systems. OpenHW3 provides two main options, a temperature-controlled orbital shaker, as well as an option to retrofit a commercial orbital shaker for temperature control. The effectiveness of these device options is validated via comparison with conventional binding isotherms experiments. The binding isotherm results were comparable to conventional Waterbath shakers, while providing more reliable results compared to horizontal commercial shakers. The results here are critical for allowing open access to scientific equipment, and providing high-quality binding isotherm data for reliable service life models of urban infrastructure assets throughout the world.

Abstract Glioma, with its heterogeneous microenvironments and genetic subtypes, presents substantial challenges for treatment prediction and development. We integrated 3D bioprinting and multi-algorithm machine learning as a novel approach to enhance the assessment and understanding of glioma treatment responses and microenvironment characteristics. The bioprinted patient-derived glioma tissues successfully recapitulated molecular properties and drug responses of native tumors. We then developed GlioML, a machine learning workflow incorporating nine distinct algorithms and a weighted ensemble model that generated robust gene expression-based predictors, each reflecting the diverse action mechanisms of various compounds and drugs. The ensemble model superseded the performance of all individual algorithms across diverse in vitro systems, including sphere cultures, complex 3D bioprinted multicellular models, and 3D patient-derived tissues. By integrating bioprinting, the evaluative scope of the treatment expanded to T cell-related therapy and anti-angiogenesis targeted therapy. We identified promising compounds and drugs for glioma treatment and revealed distinct immunosuppressive or angiogenic myeloid-infiltrated tumor microenvironments. These insights pave the way for enhanced therapeutic development for glioma and potentially for other cancers, highlighting the broad application potential of this integrative and translational approach.

AIM:To measure the superficial capillary plexus(SCP)vessel density(VD), deep capillary plexus(DCP)VD, and the area, circumference, and roundness index of the foveal avascular zone(FAZ)in healthy individuals of four ethnic groups, namely, Uyghur, Han, Kazakh, and Hui by optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA), and to investigate the differences of blood flow parameters in macular area of healthy individuals among different ethnic groups in China.METHODS: A total of 80 cases(80 eyes)of healthy subjects if each of the four ethnic groups who went to the Eye Center of the Friendship Hospital of Ili Kazak autonomous Prefecture from December 2022 to March 2023 and met the criteria were selected for the study, with 320 eyes totally. The patients were grouped and numbered according to their ethnicity, and the spherical equivalent and axial length were obtained by using an autorefractor and IOL Master. The blood flow images of the macular area in the range of 3 mm×3 mm were obtained by using a DRI Triton OCT detector, and the images were analyzed by using the built-in IMAGENET6 software to obtain the blood flow parameters. Furthermore, the differences in the blood flow parameters between different ethnic groups as well as the effects of gender, age, and axial length on macular blood flow parameters of different ethnic groups were compared.RESULTS:There were no statistically significant differences in gender, age, axial length, diopter, and image quality(IQ)among the four groups of subjects(all P>0.05). Abstract Background The incidence of multiple primary cancers (MPC), especially involving primary lung cancer (PLC) and primary hematologic malignancies (PHM), is rising. This study aims to analyze clinicopathological features, gene abnormalities, and prognostic outcomes in individuals diagnosed with PLC-PHM MPC. Methods A retrospective analysis included 89 patients diagnosed with PLC-PHM MPC at the Respiratory or Hematology Departments of Ruijin Hospital from 2003 to 2022 (a total of 842,047 people). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) assessed lung cancer specimens, while Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and NGS were used for hematologic malignancy specimens. Statistical analysis involved survival analysis and Cox regression. Results PLC-PHM MPC incidence surged from 1.67 per year (2011–2013) to 16.3 per year (2020–2022). The primary demographic for PLC-PHM MPC consists predominantly of elderly (average age 66 years) males (59.6%), with a high prevalence of metachronous MPC (89.9%). The prevailing histological types were lung adenocarcinoma (70.8%) in lung cancer (LC) and mature B-cell lymphomas (50.6%) in hematologic malignancies (HM). Notably, in a molecular testing cohort of 38 LC patients, 84.2% of lung cancer cases exhibited driver mutations, in which EGFR mutations frequence prevalent was 74.2%. In total group of 85 cases achieved a median overall survival (mOS) of 46.2 months, with a 5-year survival rate of 37.9% and advanced LC patients with LC gene mutations achieved a mOS was 52.6 months, with a 5-year OS rate of 30.6%. The median progression-free survival (PFS) following first-line treatment of 11 advanced patients with lung cancer-associated driver gene mutations is 26.6 months. Multivariate Cox regression revealed a favorable OS associated with surgery for LC, favorable PS score, adenocarcinoma pathology of LC, and the presence of genetic abnormalities associated with HM. Conclusion PLC-PHM MPC incidence is rising, characterized by a significant proportion of lung adenocarcinoma and a high prevalence of positive driver genes, especially in EGFR. Despite suffering from two primary tumors, the PLC-PHM MPC patients had superior data of both PFS and OS, suggesting an inherently intricate background of genetic abnormalities between the two kinds of tumors.

ABSTRACTBackground A commercial three-dimensional optical (3DO) scanning system was reported to be used in body composition assessment. However, the applicability in Chinese adults has yet to be well-studied.Methods This secondary analysis was based on a 16-week weight-loss clinical trial with an optional extension to 24 weeks. Waist and hip circumference and body composition were measured by 3DO scanning at each follow-up visit during the study. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was also performed to confirm the reliability of 3DO scanning at each visit. We used Lin’s concordance correlation coefficients (CCC) to evaluate the correlation between the two methods above-mentioned. Bland-Altman analysis was also performed to evaluate the agreement and potential bias between different methods.Results A total number of 70 Chinese adults overweight and obese (23 men and 47 women, aged 31.8 ± 5.8 years) were included in the analysis, which resulted in 350 3DO scans and corresponding 350 BIA measurements. The percent body fat, fat mass, and fat-free mass were 33.9 ± 5.4%, 26.7 ± 4.6 kg, and 50.3 ± 8.7 kg before the trial by 3DO scanning. And they were 30.5 ± 5.8%, 22.5 ± 4.7 kg, and 49.4 ± 8.3 kg after 16 weeks of the trial. Compared with BIA, 3DO scanning performed best in the assessment of fat-free mass (CCC = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.86, 0.90), then followed by fat mass (CCC = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.71, 0.80) and percent body fat (CCC = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.64, 0.75). ABSTRACTLong noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) regulate the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with obstructive sleep apnoea (T2DM-OSA). However, the role of the lncRNA nuclear paraspeckle assembly transcript 1 (NEAT1) in T2DM-OSA remains unknown. This study aimed to reveal the function of NEAT1 in T2DM-OSA and the underlying mechanism. KKAy mice were exposed to intermittent hypoxia (IH) or intermittent normoxia to generate a T2DM-OSA mouse model. HMEC-1 cells were treated with high glucose (HG) and IH to construct a T2DM-OSA cell model. RNA expression was detected by qRT-PCR. The protein expression of Apelin, NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and up-frameshift suppressor 1 (UPF1) was assessed using western blot. Cell injury was evaluated using flow cytometry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and oxidative stress kit assays. RIP, RNA pull-down, and actinomycin D assays were performed to determine the associations between NEAT1, UPF1, and Apelin. NEAT1 expression was upregulated in the aortic vascular tissues of mice with T2DM exposed to IH and HMEC-1 cells stimulated with HG and IH, whereas Apelin expression was downregulated. The absence of NEAT1 protected HMEC-1 cells from HG- and IH-induced damage. Furthermore, NEAT1 destabilized Apelin mRNA by recruiting UPF1. Apelin overexpression decreased HG- and IH-induced injury to HMEC-1 cells by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Moreover, NEAT1 knockdown reduced HG- and IH-induced injury to HMEC-1 cells through Apelin. Introduction and Objectives: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), a prevalent metabolic disorder, often coexists with a range of complications, with retinopathy being particularly common. Recent studies have shed light on a potential connection between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and hepatic fibrosis, indicating a possible shared pathophysiological foundation in T2DM. This study investigates the correlation between retinopathy and hepatic fibrosis among individuals with T2DM, as well as evaluates the diagnostic value of DR for significant hepatic fibrosis. Materials and Methods: Our cross-sectional analysis incorporated 5413 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2008. The Fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) classified hepatic fibrosis into different grades (F0-F4), with significant hepatic fibrosis marked as F2 or higher. Retinopathy severity was determined using retinal imaging and categorized into four levels. The analysis of variance or Chi-square tests facilitated group comparisons. Additionally, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis appraised the predictive accuracy of retinopathy for significant hepatic fibrosis in the T2DM population. Results: Among 5413 participants, the mean age was 59.56 ± 12.41, with 50.2% male. And 20.6% were diagnosed with T2DM. Hepatic fibrosis grading was positively associated with retinopathy severity (OR [odds ratio]: 1.521, 95%CI [confidence interval]: 1.152-2.008, P = 0.003) across the entire population. The association was amplified in the T2DM population according to Pearson's analysis results. The ROC curve demonstrated retinopathy's diagnostic capacity for significant hepatic fibrosis in the T2DM population (AUC [area under curve] = 0.72, 95%CI: 0.651-0.793, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Retinopathy could serve as an independent predictor of significant hepatic fibrosis in T2DM population. Ophthalmologists are advised to closely monitor T2DM patients with retinopathy.

Summary: In recent years, vegetation plays a key role in landslide stability under extreme rainfall in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, so it is very important to identify the mechanism of vegetation slope protection. This study takes wildcat landslide in Three Gorges Reservoir area as the research object, using indoor landslide model test and building monitoring systems such as stress field, displacement field, and soil erosion, to illustrate the protective effect of typical vegetation. Furthermore, Bermuda cover effectively reduces pore water pressure, pore soil pressure, displacement, and turbidity. In particular, the three stages of interception and buffering of rainfall by stems and leaves, infiltration and absorption of rainfall by the root system, and the reinforcement of the slope against sliding forces by the root system have been divided. Moreover, these findings offer valuable preliminary insights for guiding landslide mitigation strategies in the Three Gorges Reservoir area.

Abstract Generating test cases is essential for discovering software bugs. However, finding bugs in multi-path loops is challenging, especially when bugs can only be exposed after a specific interleaving execution order. Furthermore, the number of paths increases exponentially when the iteration count increases. It results in running out of resources (e.g., allocated search budget) in existing algorithms for test case generation before finding program bugs. To overcome these challenges and improve the effectiveness of existing algorithms in finding bugs among multi-path loops, we propose a path-oriented test case generation framework to explore loop paths of bounded depth. To fulfill this task, we first present a method that groups loop paths based on their latent similarities. Then, we formulate the problem of generating test cases to cover loop paths as a many-objective optimization one. The many-objective optimization problem is designed to optimize one group of loop paths at a time. Finally, a many-objective test case generation framework is used to generate test cases for covering loop paths. In this framework, a knowledge transfer scheme is incorporated to reuse suitable archived test cases at the start of the search process for a similar group of paths. We have implemented the proposed knowledge transfer scheme with generalized differential evolution 3 (KT-GDE3) and evaluated it with benchmarks from the competition on software verification (SV-COMP16 and SV-COMP21). The experimental results show that KT-GDE3 outperforms alternative search-based test case generation algorithms in bug finding capability for multi-path loops. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed knowledge transfer scheme, our approach is compared with the variant without this scheme (called KT-GDE3-unarchived) in the benchmarks. The corresponding experimental results verify our assumption that the knowledge transfer scheme can significantly enhance the optimization process of multi-objective algorithms such as generalized differential evolution when finding bugs in multi-path loops.

Objective: Postpartum weight retention (PPWR) is a common problem among women after childbirth. The main objectives of this study are to understand the changes in body weight of breastfeeding mothers during long-term follow-up and preliminarily explore the relationship between maternal body weight and human milk composition, including macronutrients, leptin, and adiponectin. Methods: The study included a longitudinal cohort (122 mothers), and a cross-sectional cohort (37 mothers). The human milk, maternal weight, and dietary surveys were collected in the longitudinal cohort at different follow-up time points (1−14 days postpartum, 2−4 months postpartum, 5−7 months postpartum, and 12−17 months postpartum). The maternal body weight was analyzed using the responses in the survey questionnaires. A milk analyzer based on the mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIRS) was used to determine milk composition, and nutrition analysis software evaluated dietary intakes. In the cross-sectional cohort, participating mothers were asked to provide blood and human milk samples and pertinent information related to maternal body composition. Maternal body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), while ELISA analyzed leptin and adiponectin in milk and serum. Results: At 5−7 months postpartum, the PPWR of breastfeeding mothers was (2.46 ± 3.59) kg. At 12−17 months postpartum, the PPWR was (0.98 ± 4.06) kg. PPWR was found to be negatively correlated with milk fat content within 14 days postpartum and positively correlated at 2−4 months postpartum. In addition, the maternal weight and body muscle mass were positively correlated with leptin and adiponectin in milk. Plasma leptin was positively correlated with the mother's body weight, body mass index (BMI), FAT percentage, and body fat mass, while plasma adiponectin did not correlate with any parameter. The results also indicate that the PPWR did not correlate with leptin and adiponectin in plasma or milk. Conclusions: Breastfeeding mothers may retain considerable weight gain one year after delivery. Human milk composition may be related to changes in maternal body weight. Leptin and adiponectin in breast milk and leptin in plasma are associated with the maternal body composition. This study supports the notion that maternal nutritional status may affect offspring health through lactation, and future research should focus on exploring weight management of postpartum mothers.

Abstract Background Early-onset pharyngeal airway collapse (PAC) in infants, which presents with onset within 6-months old is relatively rare. This disease has not been given enough attention in clinic. The aim of this study was to explore the clinical features, endoscopic findings and outcomes of early-onset PAC in infants. Methods The children of PAC with onset within 6-months old were included. A retrospective study was conducted. Results (1) Total 26 cases were included. The age of onset was neonatal period in 20 cases, 1 to 3-months old in 5 cases, and 4 to 6-months old in 1 case. (2) The main clinical manifestations were noisy breathing (26/26), suprasternal retraction (18/26), snoring (14/26) and hypoxic episode (13/26). (3) Based on the endoscopic findings, collapse at the retropalatal level was most common (24/26). (4) Twelve cases underwent pharyngolaryngeal CT examination, which revealed abnormal findings in 7 cases. (5) Fifteen cases were accompanied with the other airway malformations. (6) In the group with comorbidities of cerebral impairment or craniofacial abnormalities, 1 case was lost to follow up, 4 cases died, and 10 cases survived, in which 9 cases had neurodevelopmental disorders. In the group without comorbidities, 2 cases were lost to follow up, 9 cases survived, in which 1 case had neurodevelopmental disorders. In recent decades, substantial advancements in epigenetics have unveiled a profound understanding of its mechanisms in tumorigenesis and have offered promising strategies for epigenetic therapy in cancer patients. In our study, through bioinformatics analysis, we discovered a significant downregulation and hypermethylation of FOXI2 in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), while the expression in chromophobe cell carcinoma (chRCC) exhibited the opposite trend. Moreover, we established a strong correlation between FOXI2 expression levels and the prognosis of ccRCC. Gene enrichment analysis and cell function experiments unequivocally demonstrate that FOXI2 possesses the capability to induce cell cycle arrest and inhibit cell proliferation.Our research findings demonstrate that the expression of FOXI2 in ccRCC is under the regulation of promoter hypermethylation. Furthermore, in vitro experiments have conclusively shown that the overexpression of FOXI2 induces cell cycle arrest and inhibits cell proliferation.

With rapid economic and social development, both concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) composite structures and basalt fiber (BF) have been widely applied in the field of civil engineering. To investigate the laws and characteristics of the influence of chopped BF on the mechanical properties of CFST columns and further promote the application of BF in CFST structures, the axial compressive bearing capacity test of 18 CFST short columns was carried out, and the influence of BF of different lengths on their structural mechanical properties was analyzed. The test results were compared with the theoretical calculation results and the finite element analysis results to verify the reasonableness of the test results. The results reveal that the axial compressive bearing capacity of the CFST short column after adding BF is significantly improved compared to the ordinary CFST short column, in which the bearing capacity and the ductility coefficient are increased by approximately 8.1% and 31.6%, respectively, on average. In addition, changing the length of BF has less effect on the bearing capacity of CFST short columns, the rate of increase in bearing capacity decreases with an increase in the steel ratio of CFST, and the coefficient of ductility increases with the increase in the steel ratio.

Cerebrovascular dysfunction resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI) significantly contributes to poor patient outcomes. Recent studies revealed the involvement of iron metabolism in neuronal survival, yet its effect on vasculature remains unclear. This study aims to explore the impact of endothelial ferroptosis on cerebrovascular function in TBI. A Controlled Cortical Impact (CCI) model was established in mice, resulting in a significant increase in iron-related proteins such as TfR1, FPN1, and FTH, as well as oxidative stress biomarker 4HNE. This was accompanied by a decline in expression of the ferroptosis inhibitor GPX4. Moreover, Perls' staining and nonhemin iron content assay showed iron overload in brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) and the ipsilateral cortex. Immunofluorescence staining revealed more FTH-positive cerebral endothelial cells, consistent with impaired perfusion vessel density and cerebral blood flow. As a specific iron chelator, deferoxamine (DFO) treatment inhibited such ferroptotic proteins expression and the accumulation of lipid‐reactive oxygen species following CCI, enhancing glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity. DFO treatment significantly reduced iron deposition in BMECs and brain tissue, and increased density of the cerebral capillaries as well. Consequently, DFO treatment led to improvements in cerebral blood flow (as measured by laser speckle imaging) and behavioral performance (as measured by the neurological severity scores, rotarod test, and Morris water maze test). Taken together, our results indicated that TBI induces remarkable iron disorder and endothelial ferroptosis, and DFO treatment may help maintain iron homeostasis and protect vascular function. This may provide a novel therapeutic strategy to prevent cerebrovascular dysfunction following TBI.

The Angle of Arrival (AOA) fluctuation caused by oceanic turbulence is the critical factor affecting the performance of underwater communication and imaging systems. Based on the general Oceanic Turbulence Optical Power Spectrum (OTOPS), this paper derives analytical solutions for the full interval of the Wave Structure Function (WSF) and the AOA fluctuation variance of the Gaussian beam using the Rytov approximation method applicable to weak turbulence conditions. The approximate solutions of the above physical quantities and the Spatial Coherence Radius (SCR) in the asymptotic intervals of large spacing (ρ≫η, where ρ denotes spacing andη denotes Kolmogorov microscale) and small spacing (ρ≪η) are also discussed. The numerical results show that the existing results have a large deviation around the Fresnel ratio Λ0=1 when ρ≫η. On the basis of this, the relationship between AOA fluctuation variance andρ/η is also analyzed. In the asymptotic interval ρ≪η, the AOA fluctuation variance is almost constant. When in the interval ρ≈η, the AOA fluctuation variance decreases sharply. When in the asymptotic interval ρ≫η, the decline of the AOA fluctuation variance becomes gradually flat. The results derived in this paper are more accurate and applicable to a wider range. These results will enable a better study of the propagation properties of Gaussian beams in weak oceanic turbulence.

Abstract Purpose Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive and rapidly progressive malignant tumor characterized by a poor prognosis. Chemotherapy remains the primary treatment in clinical practice; however, reliable biomarkers for predicting chemotherapy outcomes are scarce. Methods In this study, 78 SCLC patients were stratified into “good” or “poor” prognosis cohorts based on their overall survival (OS) following surgery and chemotherapeutic treatment. Next-generation sequencing was employed to analyze the mutation status of 315 tumorigenesis-associated genes in tumor tissues obtained from the patients. The random forest (RF) method, validated by the support vector machine (SVM), was utilized to identify single nucleotide mutations (SNVs) with predictive power. To verify the prognosis effect of SNVs, samples from the cbioportal database were utilized. Results The SVM and RF methods confirmed that 20 genes positively contributed to prognosis prediction, displaying an area under the validation curve with a value of 0.89. In the corresponding OS analysis, all patients with SDH, STAT3 and PDCD1LG2 mutations were in the poor prognosis cohort (15/15, 100%). Analysis of public databases further confirms that SDH mutations are significantly associated with worse OS. Conclusion Our results provide a potential stratification of chemotherapy prognosis in SCLC patients, and have certain guiding significance for subsequent precise targeted therapy.

ObjectiveMinimally invasive surgery for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage is impeded by inadequate lysis of the target blood clot. Ultrasound is thought to expedite intravascular thrombolysis, thereby facilitating vascular recanalization. However, the impact of ultrasound on intracerebral blood clot lysis remains uncertain. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of combining ultrasound with urokinase to enhance blood clot lysis in an in vitro model of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage.MethodsThe blood clots were divided into four groups: control group, ultrasound group, urokinase group, and ultrasound + urokinase group. Using our experimental setup, which included a key-shaped bone window, we simulated a minimally invasive puncture and drainage procedure for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. The blood clot was then irradiated using ultrasound. Blood clot lysis was assessed by weighing the blood clot before and after the experiment. Potential adverse effects were evaluated by measuring the temperature variation around the blood clot in the ultrasound + urokinase group.ResultsA total of 40 blood clots were observed, with 10 in each experimental group. The blood clot lysis rate in the ultrasound group, urokinase group, and ultrasound + urokinase group (24.83 ± 4.67%, 47.85 ± 7.09%, 61.13 ± 4.06%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (16.11 ± 3.42%) (p = 0.02, p < 0.001, p < 0.001). The blood clot lysis rate in the ultrasound + urokinase group (61.13 ± 4.06%) was significantly higher than that in the ultrasound group (24.83 ± 4.67%) (p < 0.001) or urokinase group (47.85 ± 7.09%) (p < 0.001). In the ultrasound + urokinase group, the mean increase in temperature around the blood clot was 0.26 ± 0.15°C, with a maximum increase of 0.38 ± 0.09°C. There was no significant difference in the increase in temperature regarding the main effect of time interval (F = 0.705, p = 0.620), the main effect of distance (F = 0.788, p = 0.563), or the multiplication interaction between time interval and distance (F = 1.100, p = 0.342).ConclusionsOur study provides evidence supporting the enhancement of blood clot lysis in an in vitro model of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage through the combined use of ultrasound and urokinase. Further animal experiments are necessary to validate the experimental methods and results.

Summary: Background: The biological aging process can be modified through lifestyle interventions to prevent age-related diseases and extend healthspan. However, evidence from population-based studies on whether tea consumption could delay the biological aging process in humans remains limited. Methods: This study included 7931 participants aged 30–79 years from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) Study and 5998 participants aged 37–73 years from the UK Biobank (UKB) who participated in both the baseline and first follow-up surveys. Tea consumption information was collected through questionnaires. Biological age (BA) acceleration was calculated using clinical biomarkers and anthropometric measurements based on the Klemera Doubal method (KDM). Change-to-change analyses were performed to estimate the associations between changes in tea consumption status and changes in BA acceleration using multiple linear models. Follow-up adjusted for baseline analyses were further conducted to examine the prospective exposure-response relationship between tea consumption and BA acceleration among individuals with constant tea consumption status. Findings: During a median follow-up of 1.98 (1.78, 2.16) years in the CMEC and 4.50 (3.92, 5.00) years in the UKB, tea consumption was consistently associated with attenuated BA acceleration in both cohorts. Transitioning from nondrinking to tea-drinking was associated with decreased BA acceleration (CMEC: β = −0.319, 95% CI: −0.620 to −0.017 years; UKB: β = −0.267, 95% CI: −0.831 to 0.297 years) compared to consistent nondrinking. Even stronger associations were found in consistent tea drinkers. The exposure-response relationship suggested that consuming around 3 cups of tea or 6–8 g of tea leaves per day may offer the most evident anti-aging benefits. Interpretation: Tea consumption was associated with attenuated BA acceleration measured by KDM, especially for consistent tea drinkers with moderate consumption. Our findings highlight the potential role of tea in developing nutrition-oriented anti-aging interventions and guiding healthy aging policies. ObjectiveWeight reduction often accompanies muscle loss. Existing studies highlight the involvement of osteocalcin (OC) in energy metabolism and its potential to prevent age-related muscle loss. Nevertheless, these studies predominantly involve individuals with hyperglycemia, yielding conflicting research outcomes. This study investigated the protective role of OC against muscle loss during weight reduction in individuals without metabolic syndrome (MetS).MeasuresWe enrolled 130 overweight or obese individuals without MetS in a 4-month high-protein, energy-restricted dietary weight management program conducted at two clinic centers. Body composition and laboratory tests were assessed both before and after weight loss. Correlation and regression analysis were made between the changes in metabolic indicators and muscle mass during weight loss.ResultsFollowing weight loss, there was a decrease in body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (PBF), visceral fat area (VFA), fasting insulin (FINS), homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), and lipid profile, and increase in the percentage of skeletal muscle (PSM) and vitamin D. There was no change in osteocalcin (OC) during the intervention. Correlation analysis of the relative changes in all metabolic indicators revealed a positive correlation between OC and PSM (r=0.383, p=0.002). Multiple linear regression analysis found that OC has a significant protective effect on muscles during weight loss in males after adjusting for confounding factors (β=0.089, p=0.017).ConclusionHigh-protein, energy-restricted diets demonstrate efficacy in enhancing metabolic indicators within the weight-loss population. Furthermore, OC exhibits a protective effect on muscle mass during weight reduction in individuals without MetS, with this effect being particularly evident in males.

Automatically generating test cases by evolutionary algorithms to satisfy the path coverage criterion has attracted much research attention in software testing. In the context of generating test cases to cover many target paths, the efficiency of existing methods needs to be further improved when infeasible or difficult paths exist in the program under test. This is because a significant amount of the search budget (i.e., time allocated for the search to run) is consumed when computing fitness evaluations of individuals on infeasible or difficult paths. In this work, we present a feedback-directed mechanism that temporarily removes groups of paths from the target paths when no improvement is observed for these paths in subsequent generations. To fulfill this task, our strategy first organizes paths into groups. Then, in each generation, the objective scores of each individual for all paths in each group are summed up. For each group, the lowest value of the summed up objective scores among all individuals is assigned as the best aggregated score for a group. A group is removed when no improvement is observed in its best aggregated score over the last two generations. The experimental results show that the proposed approach can significantly improve path coverage rates for programs under test with infeasible or difficult paths in case of a limited search budget. In particular, the feedback-directed mechanism reduces wasting the search budget on infeasible paths or on difficult target paths that require many fitness evaluations before getting an improvement.

In this paper, we investigate the maximum number of small-amplitude limit cycles bifurcated from a planar piecewise smooth focus-parabolic type cubic system that has one switching line given by the x-axis. By applying the generalized polar coordinates to the parabolic subsystem and computing the Lyapunov constants, we obtain 11 weak center conditions and 9 weak focus conditions at (0,0). Under these conditions, we prove that a planar piecewise smooth cubic system with a focus-parabolic-type critical point can bifurcate at least nine limit cycles. So far, our result is a new lower bound of the cyclicity of the piecewise smooth focus-parabolic type cubic system.

Summary: Programmable control over therapeutic processes in phototherapy, like photodynamic therapy (PDT), is promising but challenging. This study uses an energy segmentation-based strategy to synthesize core-multi-shell upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), which can release three different colors (red, green, and blue) upon exposure to different near-infrared light (1550 nm, 808 nm, and 980 nm). By combining these UCNPs with photosensitizers and nitric oxide (NO) donors, a smart “off-on” PDT nanoplatform is developed. UCNPs enable independent activation of imaging, release of NO, and generation of reactive oxygen species using specific light wavelengths. The results show that sequential NO release before PDT can greatly alleviate tumor hypoxia by reducing oxygen consumption. This stepwise approach shows potential for precise NIR light-activated and imaging-guided phototherapy.

Urban green space sound sources play an important role in providing people with high quality recreation experiences. However, the evaluation index for urban green space sound sources is still limited. The main purpose of this study is to propose indices for soundscape diversity in urban green spaces, compare soundscape diversity with acoustic diversity, and understand the role of soundscape diversity in urban green spaces. In our field investigation, the sound sources of 30 sample sites were recorded over a five-minute period, and the soundscape diversity index (SDI), soundscape richness index (SRI), soundscape dominance index (SDO), and soundscape evenness index (SEI) were calculated. The results showed that soundscape diversity indices are more suitable for the evaluation of urban green space sound diversity than acoustic diversity indices. There is a significant correlation between soundscape diversity and urban green space landscape patterns, and there is a varied relationship between soundscape diversity and sound perception in different urban green spaces. Soundscape diversity can be explained by existing objective acoustic indicators, which can explain 55% of SDI model variations, 71% of SRI model variations, 43% of SDO model variations, and 32% of SEI model variations. Soundscape diversity can be applied to future urban green space planning and acoustic environment design.

We are interested in a communication system that operates in the presence of an intelligent jammer, under stringent power constraints, but with flexible bandwidth constraints. We optimize some of the key elements in the transceiver design for low power consumption, and thus high complexity components of the system, such as matched filters (MF), forward error correction (FEC) that employs iterative decoders, coherent demodulators, and bandwidth-efficient modulation formats, are not feasible for this research. Rather, our system is designed using M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) with non-coherent detection and fast frequency hopping (FFH), optimized two-pole bandpass filters (BPF), and Reed-Solomon (RS) codes with hard-decision decoding. Among other things, we show that by properly optimizing the key parameters of the BPFs and RS codes, we can design the system to be significantly less complex than the MF system with a performance loss of less than 1.4 dB for most scenarios that we considered. Further, the 2-pole BPF system can actually outperform the corresponding MF system by up to 2.4 dB in the presence of multi-tone jamming.

In one of our previous papers, we designed an ultra-low power non-coherent MFSK system using 2-pole bandpass filters to replace matched filters for detection and showed the performance loss between our proposed system and the optimal MFSK system using matched filters for detection was no greater than 1.2 dB in all alphabet size, phase continuity and channel conditions we analyzed. In this paper, we improve our previous design by considering the power-bandwidth tradeoff, and we show that we can save a large percentage of system bandwidth by sacrificing a small amount of power, when the demodulator and coding parameters are optimized. For example, we can save 50% of system bandwidth at the cost of 1 dB loss in performance compared to our previous system design. We further extend the results to include Gaussian filtering, we quantify the performance loss as a function of both the system bandwidth saved and the time-bandwidth product of the Gaussian filter, and we compare the performance of the $M$ -ary GFSK system with the corresponding MFSK system.

In this study, the SiCp/Al matrix composites was fabricated by concurrent wire-powder feeding laser deposition (CWPLD). The microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated SiCp/Al composites were studied. The microstructure of fabricated composites consisted of Al matrix, SiC and reaction product Al4C3. The size of α-Al grain (mean area: 275.0 μm2) was much smaller than that of Al specimen fabricated by wire feeding laser deposition (WLD) (mean area: 1544.4 μm2). SiC and Flaky Al4C3 were non-uniformly distributed in the matrix. Al4C3 platelets distributed discontinuously at the interface between unmelted SiC and Al. Due to the inhomogeneous distribution of SiC and Al4C3, the Vickers hardness of the fabricated composites fluctuated violently, ranging from 85 HV to 120 HV. The ductility of the fabricated composites (3.75%) was lower than that of the Al specimen (8.94%) fabricated by WLD. The tensile strength of the fabricated composites (246.0 MPa) was higher than that of the Al specimen fabricated by WLD (230.8 MPa). In the tensile test, only SiC fracture were found in the fracture observation. The bonding strength of interface between SiC and Al was higher than strengths of SiC particle and Al matrix. The debonding between SiC and the Al matrix was not found on the fracture surface of tensile specimens.

In this paper the authors aim to argue that the existence of a strong corporate governance mechanism (a formal credibility-enhancing mechanism) and the presence of a more trustworthy-looking CEO (an informal credibility-enhancing mechanism) are substitutes. By using machine-learning-based facial-feature-point detection technique, the authors construct a proprietary facial-trustworthiness database for a large-scale of CEOs in the US listed companies. First, the authors manually search for qualifying CEO image from websites and annual reports. Second, by following the neuroscience and psychology literature, the authors use the machine-learning-based face detector to identify the facial features in the CEO photos to calculate a rich and reliable set of facial-trustworthiness measures. The authors then construct a composite facial-trustworthiness index for each CEO. After obtaining accounting data, the authors’ final sample comprises 16,201 firm-year observations for 3,186 CEOs in the sample period of 2000-2018. The results of the authors’ regression analyses show a negative association between board monitoring intensity and CEOs' facial trustworthiness, indicating that board directors may factor CEOs' facial trustworthiness into their monitoring decisions. Moreover, the authors find that these results are mainly driven by CEOs whose tenure is below the third quartile (i.e. eight years). The authors further find stronger results for externally hired CEOs than internally promoted CEOs. Finally, the authors’ results remain robust when using change models or subsample of CEO photos in recent years. First, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that adopts a large sample to provide systematic evidence on the directors' use of facial trustworthiness. This study extends the literature by documenting the impacts of CEOs' individual characteristics on the board monitoring intensity. Second, the results of this study emphasized the important role of perceptions based on executives' facial appearance in firm valuation, executive compensation and audit fee, and by presenting empirical evidence that CEOs' facial trustworthiness affects board monitoring intensity. Third, this study responds to the call for research on personalized trust by Hsieh et al. (2020).
