The programming of CIs is essential for good performance. However, no Good Clinical Practice guidelines exist. This paper reports on the results of an inventory of the current practice worldwide. A questionnaire was distributed to 47 CI centers. They follow 47600 recipients in 17 countries and 5 continents. The results were discussed during a debate. Sixty-two percent of the results were verified through individual interviews during the following months. Most centers (72%) participated in a cross-sectional study logging 5 consecutive fitting sessions in 5 different recipients. Data indicate that general practice starts with a single switch-on session, followed by three monthly sessions, three quarterly sessions, and then annual sessions, all containing one hour of programming and testing. The main focus lies on setting maximum and, to a lesser extent, minimum current levels per electrode. These levels are often determined on a few electrodes and then extrapolated. They are mainly based on subjective loudness perception by the CI user and, to a lesser extent, on pure tone and speech audiometry. Objective measures play a small role as indication of the global MAP profile. Other MAP parameters are rarely modified. Measurable targets are only defined for pure tone audiometry. Huge variation exists between centers on all aspects of the fitting practice.

Abstract Gas extraction from the Groningen gas field resulted in significant induced seismicity. We analyze the magnitude‐frequency distribution of these earthquakes in space, time and in view of stress changes calculated based on gas production and reservoir properties. Previous studies suggested variations related to reservoir geometry and stress. While we confirm the spatial variations, we do not detect a clear sensitivity of b‐value to Coulomb stress changes. However, we find that b‐value correlates positively with the rate of Coulomb stress changes. This correlation is statistically significant and robust to uncertainties related to stress change calculation. This study thus points to a possible influence of stress change rate on the probability of the magnitude of induced earthquakes.

Introduction. To minimise power loss, maintain the voltage within the acceptable range, and improve power quality in power distribution networks, reconfiguration and optimal distributed generation placement are presented. Power flow analysis and advanced optimization techniques that can handle significant combinatorial problems must be used in distribution network reconfiguration investigations. The optimization approach to be used depends on the size of the distribution network. Our methodology simultaneously addresses two nonlinear discrete optimization problems to construct an intelligent algorithm to identify the best solution. The proposed work is novel in that it the Extended Mixed-Integer Quadratic Programming (EMIQP) technique, a deterministic approach for determining the topology that will effectively minimize power losses in the distribution system by strategically sizing and positioning Distributed Generation (DG) while taking network reconfiguration into account. Using an efficient Quadratic Mixed Integer Programming (QMIP) solver (IBM ®), the resulting optimization problem has a quadratic form. To ascertain the range and impact of various variables, our methodology outperforms cutting-edge algorithms described in the literature in terms of the obtained power loss reduction, according to extensive numerical validation carried out on typical IEEE 33- and 69-bus systems at three different load factors. Practical value. Examining the effectiveness of concurrent reconfiguration and DG allocation versus sole reconfiguration is done using test cases. According to the findings, network reconfiguration along with the installation of a distributed generator in the proper location, at the proper size, with the proper loss level, and with a higher profile, is effective.

Abstract In this paper, we present the first high‐speed video observation of a cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash and its associated downward‐directed Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flash (TGF). The optical emission of the event was observed by a high‐speed video camera running at 40,000 frames per second in conjunction with the Telescope Array Surface Detector, Lightning Mapping Array, interferometer, electric‐field fast antenna, and the National Lightning Detection Network. The cloud‐to‐ground flash associated with the observed TGF was formed by a fast downward leader followed by a very intense return stroke peak current of −154 kA. The TGF occurred while the downward leader was below cloud base, and even when it was halfway in its propagation to ground. The suite of gamma‐ray and lightning instruments, timing resolution, and source proximity offer us detailed information and therefore a unique look at the TGF phenomena.

Atmospheric deposition is one of the main sources of dissolved iron (Fe) in the ocean surfaces. Atmospheric processes are recognized as controlling fractional Fe solubility (Fesol%) in marine aerosol particles. However, the impact of these processes on Fesol% remains unclear. One of the reasons for this is the lack of field observations focusing on the relationship between Fesol% and Fe species in marine aerosol particles. In particular, the effects of organic ligands on Fesol% have not been thoroughly investigated in observational studies. In this study, Fe species in size-fractionated aerosol particles in the Pacific Ocean were determined using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. The internal mixing states of Fe and organic carbon were investigated using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM). The effects of atmospheric processes on Fesol% in marine aerosol particles were investigated based on the speciation results. Iron in size-fractionated aerosol particles was mainly derived from mineral dust, regardless of aerosol diameter, because the enrichment factor of Fe was almost 1 in both coarse (PM>1.3) and fine aerosol particles (PM1.3). Approximately 80 % of the total Fe (insoluble + labile Fe) was present in PM>1.3, whereas labile Fe was mainly present in PM1.3. The Fesol% in PM>1.3 was not significantly increased (2.56±2.53 %, 0.00 %–8.50 %, n=20) by the atmospheric processes because mineral dust was not acidified beyond the buffer capacity of calcite. In contrast, mineral dust in PM1.3 was acidified beyond the buffer capacity of calcite. As a result, Fesol% in PM1.3 (0.202 %–64.7 %, n=10) was an order of magnitude higher than that in PM>1.3. The PM1.3 contained ferric organic complexes with humic-like substances (Fe(III)-HULIS, but not Fe-oxalate complexes), and the abundance correlated with Fesol%. Iron(III)-HULIS was formed during transport in the Pacific Ocean because Fe(III)-HULIS was not found in aerosol particles in Beijing and Japan. The pH estimations of mineral dust in PM1.3 established that Fe was solubilized by proton-promoted dissolution under highly acidic conditions (pH < 3.0), whereas Fe(III)-HULIS was stabilized under moderately acidic conditions (pH 3.0–6.0). Since the observed labile Fe concentration could not be reproduced by proton-promoted dissolution under moderately acidic conditions, the pH of mineral dust increased after proton-promoted dissolution. The cloud process in the marine atmosphere increases the mineral dust pH because the dust particles are covered with organic carbon and Na. The precipitation of ferrihydrite was suppressed by Fe(III)-HULIS owing to its high water solubility. Thus, the organic complexation of Fe with HULIS plays a significant role in the stabilization of Fe that was initially solubilized by proton-promoted dissolution.

The protoclusters in the epoch of reionization, traced by galaxy overdensity regions, are ideal laboratories for studying the process of stellar assembly and cosmic reionization. We present the spectroscopic confirmation of the core of the most distant protocluster at z = 7.88, A2744-z7p9OD, with the James Webb Space Telescope NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy. The core region includes as many as four galaxies detected in [O iii ] 4960 and 5008 Å in a small area of ∼3″ × 3″, corresponding to ∼11 × 11 kpc, after the lensing magnification correction. Three member galaxies are also tentatively detected in dust continuum in Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 6, which is consistent with their red ultraviolet continuum slopes, β ∼ −1.3. The member galaxies have stellar masses in the range of log( M _* / M _⊙ ) ∼7.6–9.2 and star formation rates of ∼3–50 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , showing a diversity in their properties. FirstLight cosmological simulations reproduce the physical properties of the member galaxies including the stellar mass, [O iii ] luminosity, and dust-to-stellar mass ratio, and predict that the member galaxies are on the verge of merging in a few to several tens of Myr to become a large galaxy with M _* ∼ 6 × 10 ^9 M _⊙ . The presence of a multiple merger and evolved galaxies in the core region of A2744-z7p9OD indicates that environmental effects are already at work 650 Myr after the Big Bang.

Surface water Physiochemical characteristics and Zooplankton diversity and abundance of Makera Drain and its point of impact on River Kaduna were determined from January to April 2013. Nine sampling stations were used for the study, Four on Makera drain, four on River Kaduna and one at the point the Makera drain impacts the River Kaduna. pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Sulphate, Chloride and Total Hardness were observed to be significantly higher on sampling stations on the Makera drain (Stations 1 to 4).Anemone larva, Bomolodius spp., Crustacean Nauplius, Discorbis spp., Globigerniabulloides, Leptomedusa spp., Oikopleura spp., Ophiopluteus larvae, Tomopteris spp. Could be used as indicators of highly organically polluted waters, whereas Chlorochlasterpyreniger, Coleoptera, Hyalodiscus spp., Oikopleura spp., Plecoptera Larva, and Veliger larva can be used as indicators of low pollution. High pollution alters the community structure of zooplanktons, increases species Dominance, and reduces species richness, diversity, and abundance. The strict regulation of industrial discharges is highly recommended to mitigate the adverse effects such effluents can have on the environment.

Abstract IODP Site U1437 is located in the Izu rear‐arc region, approximately 330 km west of the Izu‐Bonin trench axis. The oldest four units (Units IV through Unit VII) include volcaniclastic sediment and in situ hyaloclastites. They have ages of about 6–15 Ma, shortly after cessation of Shikoku backarc basin opening. Three magma types are identified by their distinct geochemistry; they are similar types to those found in the modern Izu arc (Rear Arc Seamount Chain [RASC]‐type, Rift‐type, and volcanic front [VF]‐type). RASC‐type has the most enriched Nd and Hf isotope and fluid‐immobile trace element ratios and dominates from 9 to 6 Ma. Rift‐type, dominant from 15 to 9 Ma, is similar to VF‐type in Nd‐Hf isotopes but has the least radiogenic Sr and Pb, and intermediate La/Yb and Nb/Yb, indicating a more fertile mantle source and less hydrous slab component than VF‐type. Less common and randomly distributed VF‐type sediments have the most radiogenic Sr and Pb, and the highest Ba/(Th, LREE [light rare earth element]) ratios, and are interpreted to be distally derived. The genesis of mafic Unit VII samples (~15 Ma) was modeled using the Arc Basalt Simulator. Results are most similar to those for basalts in the modern rift environment indicating the addition of ~1% of a melt‐rich slab component generated at ~125 km, to a Philippine Sea Plate ambient mantle that was more depleted than DMM (depleted MORB mantle). The initial post‐Shikoku basin magmatism in the Izu rear‐arc generated Rift‐type magmas for about 6 million years before the distinctive RASC‐type magmatism began, which then became increasingly enriched.

NaPb2CaSr(PO4)3 lacunar apatite was synthesized by the solid‐state reaction method. The compound was characterized by X‐ray diffraction, Raman and infrared spectroscopies. The crystal structure of this new compound has been determined by Rietveld method, adopting the space group P63/m (No. 176), with a = b = 9.6684(3) Å and c = 7.1104(3) Å. The analysis shows that the M(2) sites are shared by four cations Ca, Sr, Pb and Na. While the M(1) sites are occupied by the Ca, Sr and Pb cations. The structure was described as built up from [PO4]3‐ tetrahedra and Pb2+/Ca2+/Sr2+ of six fold coordination cavities (6h positions), which delimit void hexagonal tunnels running along [0 0 1]. The tunnels are connected by cations of mixed sites (4f) half occupied by Pb2+/Ca2+/Sr2+ and half by Na+ mixed alkali cation. The results of vibrational spectroscopy are in good agreements with the XRD measurements, the assignments of internal modes of (PO4)3‐ tetrahedra have been made and corroborate well with factor group analysis for the symmetry P63/m. An attempt to purify phosphoric acid is done using our apatite and the results are promising.

The removal of cutting fluids and lubrication in dry machining operations requires a good knowledge and full control of all the mechanisms that lead to tool damage. In order to optimize dry machining operations, it is necessary to clearly identify the wear patterns, determine the contact conditions and define the relationship between the contact parameters and the operating conditions. The idea is to choose optimal cutting conditions which lead to the best contact conditions limiting the triggering or aggravation of wear phenomena. The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact multilayer coatings and cutting parameters on tool wear and temperature at the tool-chip interface for two types of coated carbides (KC810 and KC910 Commercialized inserts) during dry turning operation of carbon steel SAE 1030, in order to determine the ideal parameters and guarantee the best performances of the cutting tools. Cutting temperature, Crater and Flank wear have been systematically recorded in order to determine their influence on tool life time. To ensure the optimum choice of machining conditions; the TAGUCHI method associated to multi-factorial method were applied to plan the experiments. It has been noted that cutting speed was the most influential factor on temperature and wear evolution. We noted also that the KC810 insert was more suitable for machining of SAE 1030 Carbon Steel; where The best life time was registered (T=228 min). The KC810 inserts offer 30 min of additional machining time for the same work conditions.

El objetivo de la presente investigación fue evaluar la influencia del hidrolizado de proteínas (HP) como suplemento nutricional en el comportamiento bioproductivo en gallinas White Leghorn. Se utilizaron gallinas de reproductores ligeros con 39 semanas de edad, durante seis semanas. Se realizó un diseño completamente aleatorizado con dos tratamientos de 320 gallinas cada uno (tres réplicas de 40 gallinas). El T1, recibió diariamente 2 mL de HP por ave y al T2, no se le ofertó el producto. Se controlaron las variables bioproductivas (producción total de huevos, porcentaje de postura, consumo total de pienso, conversión, viabilidad y la mortalidad por causas), los indicadores de la incubación (huevos a planta, los porcentajes de incubación, incubabilidad y pollitos de primera) y los de calidad (consumo de pienso por pollito de primera y pollitos de primera por gallina). Se observaron diferencias significativas en el porcentaje de postura y significativa para la conversión masal y en los huevos a planta, porcentaje de incubación y porcentaje de incubabilidad y con mejor comportamiento en los indicadores de calidad en las gallinas que recibieron HP. Se concluye que el empleo de HP mejora el porcentaje de postura y la conversión masal y los indicadores relativos a la incubación, porcentaje de huevos aptos a planta, porcentaje de incubación y de incubabilidad de gallinas de la línea ligera, adicionalmente, su uso reduce aproximadamente en 100 gramos el consumo de pienso necesario para obtener un pollito de primera.

BaCO3, SrCO3, NiO, MoO3 precursors were used as starting materials in the synthesis of double perovskite (Ba1/5Sr4/5)2NiMoO6, and their crystal structure at room tempertaure was solved using X-ray powder diffraction. The Rietveld analysis of X–ray powder diffraction patterns show that both compounds adopt a tetragonal structure with space group I4/m, with unit cell parameters a= 5.58537(1) Å, c=7.9066(2) Å. The structure can be represented as a three-dimensional network of alternating NiO6 and MoO6 octahedra, with Ba and Sr atoms occupying the interstitial spaces. Temperature-induced phase transitions of (Ba1/5Sr4/5)2NiMoO6 were investigated by mean of Raman spectroscopy technique at high temperature up to 392 °C. remarkable in the behaviuor of temperature dependence of the modes has been interpreted as a phase transition from the tetragonal (I4/m) to the cubic (3Fmm) structure.

A double perovskite BaSrMgTeO6 has been synthesized and characterized by physical techniques: X‐ray diffraction, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. It crystallizes at room temperature, in the cubic system with unit cell parameters: a=8.018Å (S.G Fm‐3m) and shows an almost perfect ordering between Mg2+ and Te6+ cations at the B substructure. Based on Density Functional Theory (DFT), and using full Potential‐linearized Augmented Plane Wave (FPLAPW) method with the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA), implemented in the Wien2k package, we have investigated electronic and optical properties of such material. The optical band gap obtained with GGA approximation is equal to 2.8 eV, which is in good agreement with our experimental results. We found that transmittance T is stable and reaches the average of 90% in both experimental and theoretical studies.

The structure stability of double perovskite ceramics Ba2‐xSrxCaTeO6 (0≤x≤2) has been studied using X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. According to the Rietveld refinement three phase transitions induced by compositional changes are reported. The transition from the cubic symmetry to tetragonal (Fm m → I4/m) is observed for x between 0.4 and 0.6. The second transition from tetragonal symmetry to monoclinic symmetry with I2/m as a space group takes place between x = 0.6 and 0.8. The third phase transition, monoclinic to monoclinic (I2/m → P21/n), is located between x = 1.4 and 1.6. Furthermore, considerable changes of the compositional dependence of the Raman modes recorded at ambient conditions confirm occurance of the phase transitions revealed by the X‐ray studies.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study is to report on the rehabilitative outcomes associated with common peroneal nerve (CPN) decompression and neurolysis revision when performed with open surgical implantation of a viable cryopreserved placental membrane (vCPM). Methods Seven patients who underwent secondary CPN decompression and neurolysis with open surgical implantation of a viable cryopreserved placental membrane (vCPM) after previously failed surgery without vCPM utilization were identified through a retrospective medical record review and outcomes were analyzed. Primary mechanism of injury, severity of symptoms at time of referral, pre-operative and post-operative evaluations on edema with ultrasound, Medical Research Council (MRC) scale for motor strength, range of motion, nerve conduction velocity (NCV), and electromyography (EMG) were analyzed. Results Five patients (71.4%) achieved full recovery of motor function MRC grade 5/5, and the remaining two patients achieved MRC grade 4/5. At the 7-month follow-up visit, NCV tests indicated improved conduction velocity and normal amplitude for all 7 patients, and all patients demonstrated proper gait pattern with a return to normal activities of daily living. There were no vCPM-related adverse events. Conclusions The use of vCPM wrap as an adjunct to surgical repairs of CPN injuries may contribute to positive clinical outcomes.

The use of herbal plants as traditional medicines has a century long history. Plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) is a perennial herb containing bioactive components with free radical scavenging activities. An isotope dilution technique using [U-13C]glucose was conducted to determine the effect of plantain on the responses of plasma glucose metabolism to exogenous insulin infusion in sheep. Six crossbred sheep (three wethers and three ewes; mean initial BW=40±2 kg) were fed either a mixed hay of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) and reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) (MH-diet) or mixed hay and fresh plantain (1 : 1 ratio, dry matter basis, PL-diet) and exposed to a thermoneutral (TN, 20°C; 70% relative humidity (RH)) environment or a heat exposure (HE, 30°C; 70% RH) for 5 days using a crossover design for two 23-day periods. Abstract In an era where entertainment is effortlessly at our fingertips, one would assume that people are less bored than ever. Yet, reports of boredom are higher now than compared to the past. This rising trend is concerning because chronic boredom can undermine well-being, learning, and behaviour. Understanding why this is happening is crucial to prevent further negative impacts. In this Perspective, we explore one possible reason—digital media use makes people more bored. We propose that digital media increases boredom through dividing attention, elevating desired level of engagement, reducing sense of meaning, heightening opportunity costs, and serving as an ineffective boredom coping strategy.

We used micro-X-ray fluorescence combined with X-ray photoabsorption spectroscopy to investigate speciation-specific sulfur profiles in the inner shell layer of a giant clam (Hippopus hippopus). The sulfate, S-bearing amino acids, and total sulfur profiles indicated that inorganic sulfate was the dominant component in the shell of this bivalve. Sulfur profiles in the inner shell layer showed clear annual fluctuations that varied by more than one order of magnitude, from < 50 to 1420 ppm, and sulfate and total sulfur maxima became higher with age, whereas no ontogenetic trend was noticeable in the profile of S-bearing amino acids. A change in the carbonate ion concentration in the calcifying fluid would suggest that an ontogenetic increase in the relative activity of sulfate ions to carbonate ions in the calcifying fluid affects sulfate concentrations in the shells. These results suggest that trace sulfur profiles in the shell of the giant clam may reflect both cyclic shell growth related to environmental factors such as insolation and temperature and ontogenetic changes of the calcifying fluid chemistry mediated by physiological processes. The observed S profile implies a clear change in calcifying fluid chemistry towards less alkaline condition with age. Magnesium fluctuations suggested that Mg was incorporated into the shells at high growth rates during warm seasons. The spectrum of Mg K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and comparison of Mg and S-bearing amino acids profiles indicated that a pronounced effect of the organic fraction or disordered phases were observed in aragonitic shell of H. hippopus rather than regulated substitution into the aragonite crystal lattice.

A numerical study of the heat and mass transfer through a wall is proposed in this work. The studied wall is submitted to mass and heat convective exchange with the ambient. One of its sides is submitted to a variable solar heat flux. The computer program is used to compare the cases of coupling and no coupling heat and mass transfer through the wall under variable heat flux and ambient temperature. The temperature effect on the moisture diffusion and vice versa is presented for two usual materials. An optimal proposal can be clear from this study based on objectives which are mainly the reductions of energy consumption as it is for winter heating or summer cooling.

On propose une étude numérique, par différences finies, du transfert de chaleur dans un mur multicouche (à deux ou trois couches) soumis à une condition de rayonnement solaire sur le côté extérieur et prenant en compte les échanges de chaleur par convection sur ses deux faces. L’exploitation du code numérique est développée sur des cas relatifs au problème posé dans l’habitat. Les résultats numériques sont présentés sur des exemples de matériaux utilisés dans le domaine du bâtiment dans des conditions réelles de fonctionnement (flux solaire, pertes convectives, etc…). On analyse également, l’influence, sur le transfert de chaleur, de quelques paramètres clés du système comme le choix des matériaux, l’optimisation de leur épaisseur et également la nature variable du flux solaire. Une proposition optimale sera dégagée de cette étude en fonction des objectifs recherchés.

With the financial burden of government increasing, the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model has become an alternative method to develop public infrastructure. To efficiently promote the private sector to participate in PPP, making a proper incentive policy is critical for the government. This paper examined the effects of two governmental support policies, i.e., tax reduction and risk-sharing, on the investment decision of the private sector, and further compared the relative efficacy of these two policies. The results manifest that: first, both tax reduction and risk-sharing policies motivate private sector to invest earlier; second, although the capital structure decision of the private sector is free from the influence of the risk-sharing policy, the optimal debt level under tax reduction policy shows a U-shape relationship with the incentive ratio; third, when completion risk is large, there exists efficiency loss for total benefits of the project under the risk-sharing incentive policy. Besides, the efficacy of two incentive policies varies depending on the scenario. Firstly, given the same incentive ratio, the risk-sharing policy proves to be more effective than the tax reduction policy. Secondly, when considering the same level of incentive loss for government, tax reduction policy outperforms than risk-sharing policy in terms of efficacy. Thirdly, the efficacy of these policies also depends on the completion risk level: under small completion risk, risk-sharing policy is more effective, whereas under large completion risk, the tax reduction policy takes precedence. Based on these findings, some managerial insights that could assist government in formulating more effective incentive policies are proposed.

In this work, a numerical study of a coupled transient heat and moisture transfer was realized. The program developed is simple compared with those developed by other researchers in the literature. We have exploited it, to compare the evolution of temperature and the moisture content for simple and double layers walls of the same type and the same thickness in order to resolve the interface problem, then the influence of some boundary conditions was explored in order to see their impact on temperature and moisture evolution through two layer materials.

The need for governments and stakeholders to find urgent solutions to address the destructive effects of disasters in urban areas has led to the call for cross-sector collaborations such as public-private partnerships to assist with the development of urban community resilience in this modern era. This paper comprehensively reviews studies on the critical strategies in using public-private partnerships as a collaboration mechanism in building urban community resilience. Through a two-stage systematic literature review process, 83 publications related to PPPs and urban community resilience were retrieved for thorough content analysis. Based on an analysis of the literature, 35 critical resilience strategies for using PPPs in building urban community resilience were derived. These strategies were further categorized into nine major groupings. These groups include vulnerability and risks assessment, information gathering, database, legal, monitoring and evaluation, resilience capacity, communication and coordination, financial incentives, and business continuity. Furthermore, a theoretical framework was developed. These resilience strategies can be adopted by states and communities that intend to use the PPP concept to build the resilience of their urban communities. It also opens the international debate on the suitability of the PPP model for community resilience building.

An earthquake is one of the most significant and shocking natural disasters ever documented anywhere on the planet. Throughout history, it has claimed millions of lives and wreaked devastation on infrastructure. Because earthquake forces are spontaneous and unpredictable, engineering methods must be honed to investigate buildings under the impact of these forces. The dynamic and static computations of four RC multistory structure prototypes with various elevations in a high seismic zone are compared in this paper. The project under review is modeled as a 3, 6, 12, and 18-story establishment, and it is analyzed employing ETABS vs. 2019. The Equivalent Lateral Force (ELF) Procedure is used for static experimentation, while the Response Spectrum (RS) Procedure is employed for dynamic investigation. Both calculations are performed as per the EUROCODE 8-2004 recommendation. The ELF seismic load practice utilized was for the country of Norway, which has similar parameters to the ES-EN 8-15 seismic regulation Type I target RS, with ag/g = 0.1, spectrum type = I, soil factor S = 1.3 ground type, spectrum period (Tb, Tc, and Td) 0.1 s, 0.25 s, and 1.5 s. For the RS investigation, the parameters employed are as per ESEN-2015, ag/g = 0.1, and the spectrum type = I and ground type = B parameters were involved in the same manner for the RS analysis. The soil factor was set to 1.35; the spectrum period was set to (Tb, Tc, and Td) 0.05 s, 0.25 s, and 1.2 s. The behavior factor = 3.8, the lower bound factor = 0.2, and the damping ratio = 0.05. The results are then compared by employing different components such as displacement, story drift, story stiffness, base story shear, and story moment. Ultimately, a comparison of static and dynamic investigations has been carried out. Compared to the RS approach, the ELF technique produces more additional displacement, total drift, and base shear. As per the findings of this paper, for high-rise and tall buildings, dynamic analysis such as RS should be used rather than static analysis (ELF).

ImportanceThe COVID-19 pandemic has led to 775 million documented cases and over 7 million deaths worldwide as of March 2024 and is an ongoing health crisis. To limit viral spread within households and in the community, public health officials have recommended self-isolation, self-quarantine of exposed household contacts, and mask use. Yet, risk of household transmission (HHT) may be underestimated due to low frequency of sampling, and risk factors for HHT are not well understood.ObjectivesTo estimate the secondary attack rate of SARS-CoV-2 within households and to define the risk factors for new infections in household members who are in close contact with the index case.Design, setting, and participantsIn this prospective cohort study, from March 2020-December 2021 we enrolled 60 households with index cases who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. All household contacts and index cases were tested daily for SARS-CoV-2 via reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using self-collected anterior nares specimens. Households were followed until all study participants in the household tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 for seven consecutive days. We collected sex, age, race/ethnicity, comorbidities, and relationship to index case for secondary contacts, household level characteristics including primary income, household density, and square feet per person on property. We compared the sociodemographic variables between COVID-19 positive and negative household members and between households where secondary transmission did and did not occur.Main outcomes and measuresDaily anterior nares swabs were tested for SARS-CoV-2 using RT-PCR, in order to assess duration of nasal shedding of SARS-CoV-2, as well as risk of transmission to secondary household contacts.ResultsOf the 163 participants in this study, 84 (51.5%) were women; median age (IQR) was 36.0 (17.0-54.0) years of age; 78 (47.8%) were white and 48 (29.5%) were Hispanic/LatinX. Of the fifty households with household contacts, at least one secondary case occurred in twenty-six households (52.0%) and forty-five household contacts (43.7%) were infected. Secondary attack rate was lowest among children of index cases (6/23, 26.1%). Modified Poisson regression identified that the risk of transmission to household contacts increases significantly with age (Risk ratio for each increase in years of age = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00-1.02). Mixed effects regression models identified that participants with chronic diseases, such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, or cardiac disease, had higher Cts at baseline when compared to participants without chronic diseases (6.62, 95% CI: 1.46-11.77, p = 0.02) and show a slower rate of increase in Ct over time (-0.43, 95% CI: -0.77 to -0.09, p = 0.02).Conclusions and relevanceThis study suggests that HHT represents a key source of community-based infection of SARS-CoV-2. Allocation of resources for contact investigations and prevention interventions should focus on the individuals at highest risk of infection in households, especially those with higher density homes.

ABSTRACTMonoclonal antibody (mAb) production using non-human cells can introduce non-human glycan epitopes including terminal galactosyl-α1–3-galactose (α1–3-Gal) moieties. Cetuximab is a commercial mAb associated with causing anaphylaxis in some patients due to the binding of endogenous anti-α1–3-Gal IgE to the Fab (containing bi-α1–3-galactosylated glycans) but not to the Fc region (containing mono-α1–3-galactosylated glycans). Despite being low in abundance in typical commercial mAbs, the inherent sensitivity of cell culture conditions on glycosylation profiles, and the development of novel glycoengineering strategies, novel antibody-based modalities, and biosimilars by various manufacturers with varying procedures, necessitates a better understanding of the structural requirements for anti-α1–3-Gal IgE binding to the Fc region. Herein, we synthesized mAb glycoforms with varying degrees and regioisomers of α1–3-galactosylation and tested their binding to two commercial anti-α1–3-Gal human IgE antibodies derived from a human patient with allergies to red meat (comprising α1–3-Gal epitopes), as well as to the FcγRIIIA receptor. Our results demonstrate that unexpectedly, anti-α1–3-Gal human IgE antibodies can bind to Fc glycans, with bi-α1–3-galactosylation being the most important factor, highlighting that their presence in the Fc region may be considered as a potential critical quality attribute, particularly when using novel platforms in mAb-based biotherapeutics.

The present research examined the interplay of social threat and political mistrust on collective action intentions in the context of Hong Kong social unrest. We investigated perceived social threat from a dominant outgroup and mistrust in the political system as two antecedents of politicized identity, and as indirect predictors of intentions to participate in normative and violent nonnormative collective action. Across two studies (Study 1: N = 398; Study 2: N = 200), we found that perceived social threat, political mistrust, and their interaction had positive significant associations with action intentions (Study 1) and an interactive association (Study 2) with politicized identity. Both studies indicated indirect effects of social threat and political mistrust on both normative and violent collective action intentions through politicized identity. Politicized identity and a broader Hong Kong identity were both directly associated with normative collective action intentions. However, only politicized identity was associated with violent collective action intentions.

Addressing the global warming challenge, the carbon emissions reduction potential of green building (GB) is garnering increasing attention. However, the extent to which GB can impact the eco-economic efficiency (EE) of the construction industry remains unclear. To fill this gap, based on panel data for 30 regions of China from 2003 to 2018, in this study, a comprehensive analysis of the EE and sustainable impact of GB is conducted using a super slacks-based measure (SBM-DEA), panel vector autoregression (PVAR) and threshold models. The findings reflect that only about 10% of provinces have achieved EE effectiveness, with pure technical effectiveness being a significant driving force behind this. The average comprehensive, pure technical, and scale EE show a 62.23%, 46.42%, and 31.91% improvement potential regarding the efficiency frontier. The EE in the Eastern Region is relatively high, while the Western Region surpassed the Central Region in regards to EE in the areas of scale and pure technical efficiency. EE is significantly reduced in the current period (year) when it is subject to the positive impact of a standard deviation from the existing economic level. This impact was the strongest in period 1, then gradually disappeared until period 6, aligning with the Kuznets curve’s theoretical assumption. GB awareness negatively impacted the current period, but is expected to gradually show a positive effect after period 2. The urbanization, green building awareness, and green building coverage make a very small contribution to the EE, accounting for 8.6%, 1.6%, and 9%, respectively, with early EE and economic level identified as the primary variables affecting the current EE. The impact of GB on EE exhibits a threshold effect, with the ecological effect of GB significant only in cities with economic levels higher than 11.063. This research contributes to the existing knowledge of the eco-economic mechanism of GB and provides insights for government policies, promoting the sustainable development of the GB market.

Bastian et al. (2012) argued that the meat paradox—caring for animals yet eating them—creates a tension between people’s moral standards (caring for animals) and their behavior (eating them) that can be resolved via mechanisms of motivated moral disengagement. One disengagement mechanism that is thought to play a central role is the denial of food-animal minds and therefore their status as moral patients. This idea has garnered substantial interest and has framed much of the psychological approach to meat consumption. We subjected Studies 1 and 2 of Bastian et al. (2012) to high-powered direct replications and found support for the target article’s hypotheses, concluding a successful replication. Perceptions of animals’ minds were negatively related to their perceived edibility (original: r = –.42 [–.67, –.08]; replication: r = –.45 [–.69, –.12]), positively related to moral concern for them (original: r = .77 [.58, .88]); replication: r = .83 [.68, .91]) and positively related to negative affect related to eating them (original: r = .80 [.63, .90]; replication: r = .80 [.62, .90]). Learning that an animal will be used for food led people to deny its mental capabilities (original: d = 0.40 [0.15, 0.65]; replication: d = 0.30, 95% CI [0.24, 0.37]), with the affect slightly weaker than the original. Abstract Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease involving cystic lung destruction by invasive LAM cells. These cells harbor loss‐of‐function mutations in TSC2, conferring hyperactive mTORC1 signaling. Here, tissue engineering tools are employed to model LAM and identify new therapeutic candidates. Biomimetic hydrogel culture of LAM cells is found to recapitulate the molecular and phenotypic characteristics of human disease more faithfully than culture on plastic. A 3D drug screen is conducted, identifying histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors as anti‐invasive agents that are also selectively cytotoxic toward TSC2−/− cells. The anti‐invasive effects of HDAC inhibitors are independent of genotype, while selective cell death is mTORC1‐dependent and mediated by apoptosis. Genotype‐selective cytotoxicity is seen exclusively in hydrogel culture due to potentiated differential mTORC1 signaling, a feature that is abrogated in cell culture on plastic. Importantly, HDAC inhibitors block invasion and selectively eradicate LAM cells in vivo in zebrafish xenografts. These findings demonstrate that tissue‐engineered disease modeling exposes a physiologically relevant therapeutic vulnerability that would be otherwise missed by conventional culture on plastic. This work substantiates HDAC inhibitors as possible therapeutic candidates for the treatment of patients with LAM and requires further study.

Corn is an example of an agricultural grain with a specific combustibility level and can promote smoldering fires during storage. This paper conducts an experimental design to numerically evaluate how three parameters, namely particle size, moisture, and air ventilation, influence the smoldering velocity. The work methodology is based on Minitab’s experimental design, which defined the number of experiments. First, a pile of corn is heated by a hot plate and a set of thermocouples registers all temperature variations. Then, a full-factorial experiment is implemented in Minitab to analyze the smoldering, which provides a mathematical equation to represent the smoldering velocity. The results indicate that particle size is the most influential factor in the reaction, with 35% and 45% variation between the dried and wet samples. Moreover, comparing the influence of moisture between corn flour and corn powder samples, a variation of 19% and 31% is observed; additionally, analyzing the ventilation as the only variant, we noticed variations of 15% and 17% for dried and wet corn flour, and 27% and 10% for dried and wet corn powder. Future studies may use the experimental design of this work to standardize the evaluation methodology and more effectively evaluate the relevant influencing factors.

Abstract Glycosylation is an important attribute of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for assessing manufacturing quality. Analysis of non-human glycans containing terminal galactose-α1,3-galactose and N-glycolylneuraminic acid is essential due to the potential immunogenicity and insufficient efficacy caused by mAb expression in non-human mammalian cells. Using parallel sequencing of isobaric glycopeptides and isomeric glycans that were separated by reversed-phase and porous graphitic carbon LC, we report a highly sensitive LC MS/MS method for the comprehensive characterization of low-abundance non-human glycans and their closely related structural isomers. We demonstrate that the straightforward use of high-abundance diagnostic ions and complementary fragments under the positive ionization low-energy collision-induced dissociation is a universal approach to rapidly discriminate branch-linkage structures of biantennary glycans. Our findings reveal the structural diversity of non-human glycans and sulfation of α-galactosylated glycans, providing both an analytical method and candidate structures that could potentially be used in the crucial quality control of therapeutic mAb products.

Objective: To derive and validate models to predict the risk of a cardiac readmission within one year after specific cardiac surgeries using information that is commonly available from hospital electronic medical records. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we derived and externally validated clinical models to predict the likelihood of cardiac readmissions within one-year of isolated CABG, AVR, and combined CABG+AVR in Ontario, Canada, using multiple clinical registries and routinely collected administrative databases. For all adult patients who underwent these procedures, multiple Fine and Gray subdistribution hazard models were derived within a competing-risk framework using the cohort from April 2015 to March 2018 and validated in an independent cohort (April 2018 to March 2020). Results: For the model that predicted post-CABG cardiac readmission, the c-statistic was 0.73 in the derivation cohort and 0.70 in the validation cohort at one-year. For the model that predicted post-AVR cardiac readmission, the c-statistic was 0.74 in the derivation and 0.73 in the validation cohort at one-year. For the model that predicted cardiac readmission following CABG+AVR, the c-statistic was 0.70 in the derivation and 0.66 in the validation cohort at one-year. Conclusions: Prediction of one-year cardiac readmission for isolated CABG, AVR, and combined CABG+AVR can be achieved parsimoniously using multidimensional data sources. Model discrimination was better than existing models derived from single and multicenter registries.

Aggregation is a key process for determining the environmental behavior and impact of a nanoparticle (NP). Since organophosphate esters (OPEs), which are recognized as emerging contaminants, are distributed widely in the natural aquatic environment, they may contribute to interacting with NPs and ultimately influence their transport and fate. Here, we investigated two typical organophosphate esters OPEs on aggregation the Fe2O3 NP in aquatic environments. The results showed that both tri-ethylhexyl phosphate (TEHP) and tris (chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) improved the colloidal stability of Fe2O3 NP in artificial water and environmental matrices. TEHP exhibited an obvious effect than TCPP on the Zeta potential and aggregation rates of Fe2O3 NP in artificial water. In the presence of electrolyte, 10 mg/L TCPP and TEHP increased the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) by 3.6 times and 17.4 times, respectively. Compared with pore-water, the aggregation rates of Fe2O3 NP in river water were slightly higher than those in pore-water, which can be attributed to the higher DOC in pore-water. We suggested that the high hydrophobicity and molecular weight of OPEs were considered important factors against the aggregation of Fe2O3 NP in water. Greater surface charge and steric hindrance originating from TCPP and TEHP dominated the colloidal stability of Fe2O3 NP. HIGHLIGHTS TCPP/TEHP improve the colloidal stability of Fe2O3 NP.; Hydrophobicity and molecular weight of OPEs have a distinct effect on Fe2O3 NP agglomeration.; Electrostatic repulsions and steric stabilization control colloidal stability.;

Abstract A number of recent studies have highlighted observational evidence of midnight brightness of the 630.0 nm nightglow, which is usually related to the midnight temperature maximum (MTM) effect. In this report, MTM-related enhancements of the 630.0 nm airglow around midnight are observed through images from the ISUAL/FORMOSAT-2 satellite. The data statistics are classified into three specific types (no-peak, single-peaked, and double-peaked events) and separated into the different seasons. In order to understand the influences of geomagnetic conditions, the statistical analyses are also separated into two regions. One is collected from the region whose geomagnetic equator is north of the geographic equator, and the other is collected from the region whose geomagnetic equator is south of the geographic equator. The results show that the single-peaked brightness often appears between the geographic equator and the geomagnetic equator. The double-peaked brightness appears simultaneously on the two sides of the region sandwiched by the two equators. Coupled with the summer-to-winter neutral wind generated by seasonal effects, one side of brightness could be enhanced or disappear due to the plasma moving along the field line. The no-peak events mainly occur close to May–July, which may be due to the effect of ionospheric annual anomalies. Overall, the statistical results for the occurrence rate show strong seasonal variations with different cycles at different longitudinal regions for all three types of events. Graphical Abstract

A previous study investigated robustness of manual flash (MF) and robust optimized (RO) volumetric modulated arc therapy plans for breast radiotherapy based on five patients in 2020 and indicated that the RO was more robust than the MF, although the MF is still current standard practice. The purpose of this study was to compare their plan robustness in terms of dose variation to clinical target volume (CTV) and organs at risk (OARs) based on a larger sample size. This was a retrospective study involving 34 female patients. Their plan robustness was evaluated based on measured volume/dose difference between nominal and worst scenarios (ΔV/ΔD) for each CTV and OARs parameter, with a smaller difference representing greater robustness. Paired sample t-test was used to compare their robustness values. All parameters (except CTV ΔD98%) of the RO approach had smaller ΔV/ΔD values than those of the MF. Also, the RO approach had statistically significantly smaller ΔV/ΔD values (p < 0.001–0.012) for all CTV parameters except the CTV ΔV95% and ΔD98% and heart ΔDmean. This study’s results confirm that the RO approach was more robust than the MF in general. Although both techniques were able to generate clinically acceptable plans for breast radiotherapy, the RO could potentially improve workflow efficiency due to its simpler planning process.

Life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) plays an essential role in the economic sustainability assessment of buildings, and building information modeling (BIM) offers a potentially valuable approach to fulfilling its requirement. However, the state of LCCA based on BIM is unclear despite previously published works. Therefore, this paper aims to address this gap by reviewing 45 relevant peer-reviewed articles through a systematic literature search, selection, and assessment. The results show that three data exchange methods integrate BIM and LCCA through data input, calculation, and output. Precision management, optimization measures, and parameter analysis through BIM significantly improve the value of buildings. Also, a methodological framework is summarized that combines LCC with other indicators based on BIM to consider economic, environmental, and social impacts, which can be monetized to assess life cycle sustainability costs. These findings provide insights for scholars and practitioners.

Building information Modeling (BIM) has been applied to the whole life cycle planning of construction projects, becoming the latest “engineering brain”. Currently, researches on BIM involve various stages, but most of the review fields are relatively single and lack of systematic review and analysis. In order to comprehensively analyze the research trend of BIM in the field of engineering management, this paper takes the holistic analysis method as the framework. In the first stage, 2066 research projects were quantitatively analyzed by bibliometrics to clarify their research environment. In the second stage, scientometric analysis method is adopted to identify scholars, countries, key words and journal sources that have achieved fruitful results and influence in BIM research, and to clarify the research environment. In the last stage, indepth qualitative discussion is carried out to achieve three objectives: (1) to divide the whole life cycle of the article and summarize the research hotspots in each stage; (2) identify BIM application problems; (3) determine the future research direction. This work is helpful for researchers and practitioners in this field to quickly find influential and fruitful research or journals, and to understand the current research hot spots and trends for the next research planning.

Background Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)/intervention has become the standard of care for treatment of severe aortic stenosis across the spectrum of risk. There are socioeconomic disparities in access to TAVR. The impact of these disparities on postprocedural outcomes remains unknown. Our objective was to examine the association between neighborhood‐level social deprivation and post‐TAVR mortality and hospital readmission. Methods and Results We conducted a population‐based retrospective cohort study of all 4145 patients in Ontario, Canada, who received TAVR from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2020. Our co‐primary outcomes were 1‐year postprocedure mortality and 1‐year postprocedure readmission. Using Cox proportional hazards models for mortality and cause‐specific competing risk hazard models for readmission, we evaluated the relationship between neighborhood‐level measures of residential instability, material deprivation, and concentration of racial and ethnic groups with post‐TAVR outcomes. After multivariable adjustment, we found a statistically significant relationship between residential instability and postprocedural 1‐year mortality, ranging from a hazard ratio of 1.64 to a hazard ratio of 2.05. There was a significant association between the highest degree of residential instability and 1‐year readmission (hazard ratio, 1.23 [95% CI, 1.01–1.49]). There was no association between material deprivation and concentration of racial and ethnic groups with post‐TAVR outcomes. Conclusions Residential instability was associated with increased risk for post‐TAVR mortality, and the highest quintile of residential instability was associated with increased post‐TAVR readmission. To reduce health disparities and promote an equitable health care system, further research and policy interventions will be required to identify and support economically and socially minoritized patients undergoing TAVR.

Background The COMPASS (Cardiovascular Outcomes for People Using Anticoagulation Strategies) trial decreased major adverse cardiovascular events with very low‐dose rivaroxaban and aspirin in patients with coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease. We examined the eligibility and potential real‐world impact of this strategy on the COMPASS‐eligible population. Methods and Results COMPASS eligibility criteria were applied to the CANHEART (Cardiovascular Health in Ambulatory Care Research Team) registry, a population‐based cohort of Ontario adults. We compared 5‐year major adverse cardiovascular events and major bleeding rates stratified by COMPASS eligibility and by clinical risk factors. We applied COMPASS trial rivaroxaban/aspirin arm hazard ratios to estimate the potential impact on the COMPASS‐eligible cohort. Among 362 797 patients with coronary artery disease or peripheral artery disease, 38% were deemed eligible, 47% ineligible, and 15% indeterminate. Among eligible patients, a greater number of risk factors was associated with higher rates of cardiovascular outcomes, whereas bleeding rates increased minimally. Over 5 years, applying COMPASS treatment effects to eligible patients resulted in a 2.4% absolute risk reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events and a number needed to treat of 42, and a 1.3% absolute risk increase of major bleeding and number needed to harm (NNH) of 77. Those with at least 2 risk factors had a 3.0% absolute risk reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events (number needed to treat =34) and a 1.6% absolute risk increase of major bleeding (number needed to harm =61). Conclusions Implementation of very‐low‐dose rivaroxaban therapy would potentially impact ≈$$ \approx $$2 in 5 patients with atherosclerotic disease in Ontario. Eligible individuals with ≥$$ \ge $$2 comorbidities represent a high‐risk subgroup that may derive the greatest benefit‐to‐risk ratio. Selection of patients with high‐risk predisposing factors appears appropriate in routine practice.

This study analyzed the nature, mechanisms and drivers for hot-and-polluted episodes (HPEs) in the Pearl River Delta, China. Numerical model simulations were conducted for the summer and autumn of 2009–2011. A total of eight HPEs were identified, mainly occurring in August and September. K-means clustering was applied to group the HPEs into three clusters based on their characteristics and mechanisms. We found three HPEs were driven by weak subsidence and convection induced by approaching tropical cyclones (TC-HPE) and two HPEs were controlled by calm (stagnant) conditions (ST-HPE) with low wind speed in the lower atmosphere, whereas the remaining three HPEs were driven by the combination (hybrid) of both aforementioned systems (HY-HPE). A positive synergistic effect between the HPE and urban heat island (UHI; ∼ 1.1 ∘C increase) was observed in TC-HPE and ST-HPE, whereas no discernible synergistic effect was found in HY-HPE. Total aerosol radiative forcing (TARF) caused a reduction in temperature (0.5–1.0 ∘C) in TC-HPE and ST-HPE but an increase (0.5 ∘C) in HY-HPE.

Sediment biofilms, mainly composed of diatoms, bacteria, and related extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), play important roles in mangrove ecosystems. In order to better understand the microbial biodiversity in marine environment, this study aims to clarify the effects of wetland, season, and tide on benthic biofilms and related sediment properties based on in situ investigation in two mangrove wetlands (Futian and Qi’ao) in the Pearl River Estuary, South China. Owing to the tide current, the northeastern Futian is more influenced by seawater than the southwestern Qi’ao. As a consequence of the salinity-driven accumulation of nutrients in sediments, Futian is more eutrophic than Qi’ao. Compared to Qi’ao, the higher nutrimental condition in Futian conserves higher abundance of eutrophic indicators of Nitzschia and Cyclotella, which results in higher values of all pigments and bound polysaccharide with varied monosaccharide composition. Compared to the seaward site, the landward site has higher abundance of benthic (pennate) diatoms but lower abundance of planktonic (centric) diatoms due to the varied settling velocity by tidal disturbance. This varied diatom composition leads to higher levels of bound polysaccharide and more monosaccharides in the landward site than in the seaward site. Compared to late spring (March), early summer (May) appears to have similar diatom abundance but more EPS fractions (except bound protein) and monosaccharides due to the higher level of light intensity and temperature. The observed lower bacterial abundance in May than in March might be due to the higher predation pressure. The baseline data on biofilm compositions in mangrove ecosystems from this study can improve the understanding of microbial biodiversity in response to the tidal, temporal, and spatial changes.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) comprise an essential type of biologic therapeutics and are used to treat diseases because of their anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, and their ability to protect against respiratory infections. Its production involves post-translational glycosylation, a biosynthetic process that conjugates glycans to proteins, which plays crucial roles in mAb bioactivities including effector functions and pharmacokinetics. These glycans are heterogeneous and have diverse chemical structures whose composition is sensitive to manufacturing conditions, rendering the understanding of how specific glycan structures affect mAb bioactivity challenging. There is a need to delineate the effects of specific glycans on mAb bioactivity to determine whether changes in certain glycosylation profiles (that can occur during manufacturing) will significantly affect product quality. Using enzymatic transglycosylation with chemically-defined N-glycans, we show that galactosylation at a specific location of N-glycans in an afucosylated anti-viral mAb is responsible for FcγRIIIA binding and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) activity. We report a facile method to obtain purified asymmetric mono-galactosylated biantennary complex N-glycans, and their influence on bioactivity upon incorporation into an afucosylated mAb. Using ELISA, surface plasmon resonance and flow cytometry, we show that galactosylation of the α6 antenna, but not the α3 antenna, consistently increases FcγRIIIA binding affinity. We confirm its relevance in an anti-viral model of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) using an adapted ADCC reporter assay. We further correlate this structure-function relationship to the interaction of the galactose residue of the α6 antenna with the protein backbone using 2D-1H-15N-NMR, which showed that galactosylation of at this location exhibited chemical shift perturbations compared to glycoforms lacking this galactose residue. Our results highlight the importance of identifying and quantifying specific glycan isomers to ensure adequate quality control in batch-to-batch and biosimilar comparisons.

The dispersion of vapour of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is generally assumed to be from a liquid spill on the ground in hazard and risk analysis. However, this cold vapour could be discharged at height through cold venting. While there is similarity to the situation where a heavier-than-air gas, e.g., CO2, is discharged through tall vent stacks, LNG vapour is cold and induces phase change of ambient moisture leading to changes in the thermodynamics as the vapour disperses. A recent unplanned cold venting of LNG vapour event due to failure of a pilot, provided valuable data for further analysis. This event was studied using CFD under steady-state conditions and incorporating the effect of thermodynamics due to phase change of atmospheric moisture. As the vast majority of processing plants do not reside on flat planes, the effect of surrounding topography was also investigated. This case study highlighted that integral dispersion model was not applicable as key assumptions used to derive the models were violated and suggested guidance and methodologies appropriate for modelling cold vent and flame out situations for elevated vents.

Q9 is widely used in industries handling flammable fluids and is central to explosion risk assessment (ERA). Q9 transforms complex flammable clouds from pressurised releases to simple cuboids with uniform stoichiometric concentration, drastically reducing the time and resources needed by ERAs. Q9 is commonly believed in the industry to be conservative but two studies on Q9 gave conflicting conclusions. This efficacy issue is important as impacts of Q9 have real life consequences, such as inadequate engineering design and risk management, risk underestimation, etc. This paper reviews published data and described additional assessment on Q9 using the large-scale experimental dataset from Blast and Fire for Topside Structure joint industry (BFTSS) Phase 3B project which was designed to address this type of scenario. The results in this paper showed that Q9 systematically underpredicts this dataset. Following recognised model evaluation protocol would have avoided confusion and misinterpretation in previous studies. It is recommended that the modelling concept of Equivalent Stoichiometric Cloud behind Q9 should be put on a sound scientific footing. Meanwhile, Q9 should be used with caution; users should take full account of its bias and variance.

Medium-rise reinforced concrete (RC) framed apartment complexes with stories ranging from 15 to 50 are becoming more common in Ethiopia’s main cities. In these RC-framed structures, shear walls are included for lateral load resistance. As apertures are frequently provided in shear walls, it is critical to evaluate their influence on story drift, stiffness, shear and moments, and stress within the shear walls. A 3D study with five different cases was carried out with ETABS version 19.00 software to investigate the influence of apertures in a building’s shear wall. This study looks at the effects of changing the size and location of these apertures. Based on this analysis, extensive data were acquired, and useful conclusions were formed that will be useful to practicing engineers. The seismic parameter utilized for the response spectrum study was Building Code of Ethiopia ES8-15, which conforms to Eurocode 8-2004 seismic code guidelines (based on EN1998-1) with target response spectrum type-I. The following parameters were used: ground acceleration, ag/g = 0.1, spectrum type = I, ground type = B, soil factor, S = 1.35, spectrum period, Tb, = 0.05 s, spectrum period, Tc = 0.25 s, spectrum period, Td = 1.2 s, lower bound factor, beta = 0.2, behavior factor = 1, and damping ratio = 5%. The outcomes are compared using various parameters such as displacement, story drift, story stiffness, story shear, and story moment both with and without shear wall opening cases. This study will give tremendous insight into the effect of shear wall openings on the performance of the structure. The analysis in this work was carried out on a linear model, which may not represent the complete local response of the structure; thus, future researchers should perform nonlinear analysis based on a performance-based design. It was concluded from this investigation that incorporating shear walls considerably enhanced the performance of the building over framed structures. Shear wall openings in a structure have a significant influence on the building’s performance. Due to their significant resistance to earthquake forces, shear wall structures are highly recommended for seismic hazard zones.

Background: Although cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has proven to have short- and mid-term benefit in treatment of coronary artery disease, its long-term benefit in patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is less certain. Our objective was to examine the late outcomes of patients who attended CR within the first year after CABG. Methods: Adult CABG patients referred to Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (CR group: were referred and attended at least 1 session; No-CR group: were referred but did not attend) between January 1996 and September 2008 were identified through linkages with clinical and provincial administrative databases for comorbidities and outcome ascertainment. The primary outcome was a composite of all-cause mortality, acute myocardial infarction, stroke or repeat revascularization (major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events [MACCE]). The secondary outcome was all-cause mortality. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the CR treatment effect, adjusting for baseline characteristics. Results: The study cohort consisted of 5,000 patients—3,685 (73.7%) in the CR group and 1,315 (26.3%) in the No-CR group. Median referral time was 32.5 days, and follow-up was 13.1 years. The CR group patients, compared with the No-CR group, were younger (age 62.6 ± 9.6 vs 64.0 ± 10.5 years), were more likely to be male (85.0% vs 79.5%), and had fewer cardiac comorbidities. In adjusted analyses, the CR group was associated with decreased MACCE (hazard ratio 0.83, 95% confidence interval 0.75-0.91, P < 0.0001) and a higher adjusted survival at 15 years (66.3% vs 60.1%, hazard ratio 0.76, 95% confidence interval 0.68-0.84, P < 0.0001), as compared with the No-CR group. Conclusions: There was a reduction in MACCE and late mortality associated with CR attendance, highlighting the importance of patient referral and participation in CR after CABG. Résumé: Contexte: La réadaptation cardiaque (RC) s’est révélée bénéfique à court et à moyen terme dans le traitement des coronaropathies, mais on en sait moins sur ses bienfaits à long terme chez les patients ayant subi un pontage aortocoronarien (PAC). Nous avons donc examiné les issues à long terme chez des patients ayant participé à un programme de RC dans l’année suivant un PAC. Méthodologie: À partir des données couplées des bases de données des cliniques et de l’administration provinciale, nous avons relevé tous les patients adultes ayant subi un PAC qui ont été orientés vers l’Institut de réadaptation de Toronto (groupe RC : patients orientés vers le programme et ayant participé à au moins 1 séance; groupe sans RC : patients orientés vers le programme, mais n’ayant participé à aucune séance) entre janvier 1996 et septembre 2008, afin d’établir les affections concomitantes et les résultats obtenus. Le critère d’évaluation principal composé comprenait la mortalité toutes causes confondues, l’infarctus du myocarde aigu, l’accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC) ou une nouvelle revascularisation en raison d’un événement cardiaque ou cérébrovasculaire majeur (ECCVM). Le critère d’évaluation secondaire était la mortalité toutes causes confondues. Nous avons utilisé des modèles à risques proportionnels de Cox multivariés pour évaluer l’effet thérapeutique de la RC, en apportant les corrections nécessaires pour tenir compte des caractéristiques initiales des patients. Résultats: La cohorte de l’étude réunissait 5 000 patients – 3 685 (73,7 %) dans le groupe RC et 1 315 (26,3 %) dans le groupe sans RC. Les valeurs médianes du temps écoulé avant l’orientation vers un programme de RC et de la période du suivi étaient de 32,5 jours et de 13,1 ans, respectivement. Comparativement aux patients du groupe sans RC, les patients du groupe RC étaient plus jeunes (62,6 ± 9,6 ans vs 64,0 ± 10,5 ans), étaient dans une plus forte proportion des hommes (85,0 % vs 79,5 %) et présentaient un moins grand nombre d’affections cardiaques concomitantes. À l’issue des analyses après corrections, on a observé dans le groupe RC une réduction du taux d’ECCVM (rapport des risques instantanés de 0,83; intervalle de confiance [IC] à 95 %, de 0,75 à 0,91; p < 0,0001) et une augmentation du taux de survie à 15 ans corrigé (66,3 % vs 60,1 %; rapport des risques instantanés de 0,76; IC à 95 %, de 0,68 à 0,84; p < 0,0001), comparativement au groupe sans RC. Conclusions: La participation à un programme de RC a été associée à une diminution du risque d’ECCVM et de mortalité tardive, ce qui fait ressortir l’importance d’orienter les patients ayant subi un PAC vers de tels programmes et de les encourager à y participer.
