Brain diseases, encompassing neurodegenerative disorders, strokes, and brain tumors, represent significant medical conditions with profound implications for human health. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebral-spinal cord barrier (BCSFB) limited drug penetration, poor drug targeting, and limited proliferation and easy death of mature neuronal cells greatly impair regeneration of the central nervous system after the injury, and thus call for more advanced therapeutic strategies in the clinic. Biomedical hydrogel research presents a potentially novel therapeutic approach for the management of brain disorders. Hydrogels are extremely biocompatible scaffolding materials that can be loaded with a variety of drugs for achieving effective treatments for brain disorders and can be customized with different mechanical properties to match the target organ or modulate its environment. This article offers an overview of recent research progress, challenges, and prospective developments in the utilization of hydrogels for treating brain disorders, with the objective of accentuating their potential as an early intervention in the preclinical phase. The unique mechanisms of drug release in hydrogels are examined in detail: extended-release medications, environmental release of drugs, and the material's own activity. An understanding of these mechanisms helps to make more effective drug delivery systems to the brain possible.

Abstract The surface properties of oxidic supports and their interaction with the supported metals play critical roles in governing the catalytic activities of oxide‐supported metal catalysts. When metals are supported on reducible oxides, dynamic surface reconstruction phenomena, including strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) and oxygen vacancy formation, complicate the determination of the structural–functional relationship at the active sites. Here, we performed a systematic investigation of the dynamic behavior of Au nanocatalysts supported on flame‐synthesized TiO2, which takes predominantly a rutile phase, using CO oxidation above room temperature as a probe reaction. Our analysis conclusively elucidated a negative correlation between the catalytic activity of Au/TiO2 and the oxygen vacancy at the Au/TiO2 interface. Although the reversible formation and retracting of SMSI overlayers have been ubiquitously observed on Au/TiO2 samples, the catalytic consequence of SMSI remains inconclusive. Density functional theory suggests that the electron transfer from TiO2 to Au is correlated to the presence of the interfacial oxygen vacancies, retarding the catalytic activation of CO oxidation.

The number of wheat ears per unit area is crucial for assessing wheat yield, but automated wheat ear counting still faces significant challenges due to factors like lighting, orientation, and density variations. Departing from most static image analysis methodologies, this study introduces Wheat-FasterYOLO, an efficient real-time model designed to detect, track, and count wheat ears in video sequences. This model uses FasterNet as its foundational feature extraction network, significantly reducing the model’s parameter count and improving the model’s inference speed. We also incorporate deformable convolutions and dynamic sparse attention into the feature extraction network to enhance its ability to capture wheat ear features while reducing the effects of intricate environmental conditions. To address information loss during up-sampling and strengthen the model’s capacity to extract wheat ear features across varying feature map scales, we integrate a path aggregation network (PAN) with the content-aware reassembly of features (CARAFE) up-sampling operator. Furthermore, the incorporation of the Kalman filter-based target-tracking algorithm, Observation-centric SORT (OC-SORT), enables real-time tracking and counting of wheat ears within expansive field settings. Experimental results demonstrate that Wheat-FasterYOLO achieves a mean average precision (mAP) score of 94.01% with a small memory usage of 2.87MB, surpassing popular detectors such as YOLOX and YOLOv7-Tiny. With the integration of OC-SORT, the composite higher order tracking accuracy (HOTA) and counting accuracy reached 60.52% and 91.88%, respectively, while maintaining a frame rate of 92 frames per second (FPS). This technology has promising applications in wheat ear counting tasks.

Abstract Background Non-redundant properties such as hypoxia and acidosis promote tumor metabolic adaptation and limit anti-cancer therapies. The key to the adaptation of tumor cells to hypoxia is the transcriptional and stable expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α). The phosphorylation-activated tumorigenic signal PI3K/AKT/mTOR advances the production of downstream HIF-1α to adapt to tumor hypoxia. Studies have elucidated that acid favors inhibition of mTOR signal. Nonetheless, carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX), overexpressed on membranes of hypoxia tumor cells with pH-regulatory effects, attenuates intracellular acidity, which is unfavorable for mTOR inhibition. Herein, a drug delivery nanoplatform equipped with dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor Dactolisib (NVP-BEZ235, BEZ235) and CAIX inhibitor 4‐(2‐aminoethyl) benzene sulfonamide (ABS) was designed to mitigate hypoxic adaptation and improve breast cancer treatment. Results ABS and PEG-NH2 were successfully modified on the surface of hollow polydopamine (HPDA), while BEZ235 and Chlorin e6 (Ce6) were effectively loaded with the interior of HPDA to form HPDA-ABS/PEG-BEZ235/Ce6 (H-APBC) nanoparticles. The release of BEZ235 from H-APBC in acid microenvironment could mitigate PI3K/mTOR signal and resist HIF-1α-dependent tumor hypoxia adaptation. More importantly, ABS modified on the surface of H-APBC could augment intracellular acids and enhances the mTOR inhibition. The nanoplatform combined with phototherapy inhibited orthotopic breast cancer growth while reducing spontaneous lung metastasis, angiogenesis, based on altering the microenvironment adapted to hypoxia and extracellular acidosis. Conclusion Taken together, compared with free BEZ235 and ABS, the nanoplatform exhibited remarkable anti-tumor efficiency, reduced hypoxia adaptation, mitigated off-tumor toxicity of BEZ235 and solved the limited bioavailability of BEZ235 caused by weak solubility. Trace amounts of mycotoxins in food matrices have caused a very serious problem of food safety and have attracted widespread attention. Developing accurate, sensitive, rapid mycotoxin detection and control strategies adapted to the complex matrices of food is crucial for in safeguarding public health. With the continuous development of nanotechnology and materials science, various nanoscale materials have been developed for the purification of complex food matrices or for providing response signals to achieve the accurate and rapid detection of various mycotoxins in food products. This article reviews and summarizes recent research (from 2018 to 2023) on new strategies and methods for the accurate or rapid detection of mold toxins in food samples using nanoscale materials. It places particular emphasis on outlining the characteristics of various nanoscale or nanostructural materials and their roles in the process of detecting mycotoxins. The aim of this paper is to promote the in-depth research and application of various nanoscale or structured materials and to provide guidance and reference for the development of strategies for the detection and control of mycotoxin contamination in complex matrices of food.

Severely hypoxic condition of tumour represents a notable obstacle against the efficiency of photodynamic therapy (PDT). While mitochondria targeted therapy by metformin has been considered as a promising strategy for reducing oxygen consumption in tumours, its low treatment sensitivity, short half-life and narrow absorption window in vivo remain the intractable challenges. In this report, 5′-guanosine monophosphate (5′GMP), indocyanine green (ICG), hemin and metformin, were combined to construct a smart G-quadruplex (G4) hydrogel named HMI@GEL for breast cancer (BC) treatment. Benefiting from the photothermal (PTT) effect of ICG, HMI@GEL exhibited excellent characteristics of NIR-light-triggered and persistent drug delivery to maintain high intratumoral concentration of metformin. Furthermore, drug loading concentration of metformin reached an amazing 300 ​mg ​mL−1 in HMI@GEL. To our knowledge, it might be the highest loading efficiency in the reported literatures. With the combination of catalase-mimicking Hemin@mil88, metformin could inhibit tumour mitochondrial respiratory significantly, which sequentially permitted in situ efficient oxygen generation. Remarkable apoptosis and necrosis were achieved by the combination of PTT and synergistically enhanced PDT as well as the activated tumour immunotherapy. Collectively, the HMI@GEL in situ injectable platform showed a promising strategy for enhanced PDT by metformin, and opened new perspectives for treating BC versatilely.

Abstract Background Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), employing Fenton or Fenton-like catalysts to convert hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) to kill cancer cells, holds great promise in tumor therapy due to its high selectivity. However, the therapeutic effect is significantly limited by insufficient intracellular H2O2 level in tumor cells. Fortunately, β-Lapachone (Lapa) that can exert H2O2-supplementing functionality under the catalysis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (phosphate) NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase-1 (NQO1) enzyme offers a new idea to solve this problem. However, extensive DNA damage caused by high levels of reactive oxygen species can trigger the “hyperactivation” of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), which results in the severe interruption of H2O2 supply and further the reduced efficacy of CDT. Herein, we report a self-amplified nanocatalytic system (ZIF67/Ola/Lapa) to co-deliver the PARP inhibitor Olaparib (Ola) and NQO1-bioactivatable drug Lapa for sustainable H2O2 production and augmented CDT (“1 + 1 + 1 > 3”). Results The effective inhibition of PARP by Ola can synergize Lapa to enhance H2O2 formation due to the continuous NQO1 redox cycling. In turn, the high levels of H2O2 further react with Co2+ to produce the highly toxic ·OH by Fenton-like reaction, dramatically improving CDT. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate the excellent antitumor activity of ZIF67/Ola/Lapa in NQO1 overexpressed MDA-MB-231 tumor cells. Importantly, the nanocomposite presents minimal systemic toxicity in normal tissues due to the low NQO1 expression. Conclusions This design of nanocatalytic system offers a new paradigm for combing PARP inhibitor, NQO1-bioactivatable drug and Fenton-reagents to obtain sustained H2O2 generation for tumor-specific self-amplified CDT. Rice blast caused by the filamentous fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, is arguably the most devastating rice disease worldwide. Development of a high-throughput and reliable field blast resistance evaluation system is essential for resistant germplasm screening, resistance genes identification and resistant varieties breeding. However, the occurrence of rice blast in paddy field is easily affected by various factors, particularly lack of sufficient inoculum, which always leads to the non-uniform occurrence and reduced disease severity. Here, we described a procedure for adequately inducing the occurrence of rice seedling blast in paddy field, which involves pretreatment of diseased straw, initiation of seedling blast for the first batch of spreader population, inducing the occurrence of the second batch of spreader population and test materials. This procedure enables uniform and consistent infection, which facilitates efficient and accurate assessment of seedling blast resistance for diverse rice materials.

Abstract Background Several works suggest the importance of autophagy during esophageal carcinoma development. The aim of the study is to construct a scoring system according to the expression profiles of major autophagy-related genes (ARGs) among esophageal carcinoma cases. Methods The Cancer Genome Atlas was employed to obtain the esophageal carcinoma data. Thereafter, the online database Oncolnc ( http://www.oncolnc.org/ ) was employed to verify the accuracy of our results. According to our results, the included ARGs were related to overall survival (OS). Results We detected the expression patterns of ARG within esophageal carcinoma and normal esophageal tissues. In addition, we identified the autophagy related gene set, including 14 genes displaying remarkable significance in predicting the esophageal carcinoma prognosis. The cox regression results showed that, 7 ARGs (including TBK1, ATG5, HSP90AB1, VAMP7, DNAJB1, GABARAPL2, and MAP2K7) were screened to calculate the ARGs scores. Typically, patients with higher ARGs scores were associated with poorer OS. Moreover, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis suggested that, ARGs accurately distinguished the healthy people from esophageal carcinoma patients, with the area under curve (AUC) value of > 0.6. Conclusion A scoring system is constructed in this study based on the main ARGs, which accurately predicts the outcomes for esophageal carcinoma.

ABSTRACT Plants fine-tune the growth-defense trade-off to survive when facing pathogens. Meanwhile, plant-associated microbes, such as the endophytes inside plant tissues, can benefit plant growth and stress resilience. However, the mechanisms for the beneficial microbes to increase stress resistance with little yield penalty in host plants remain poorly understood. In the present study, we report that endophytic Streptomyces hygroscopicus OsiSh-2 can form a sophisticated interaction with host rice, maintaining cellular homeostasis under pathogen-infection stress, and optimize plant growth and disease resistance in rice. Four-year field trials consistently showed that OsiSh-2 could boost host resistance to rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae while still maintaining a high yield. The integration of the proteomic, physiological, and transcriptional profiling analysis revealed that OsiSh-2 induced rice defense priming and controlled the expression of energy-consuming defense-related proteins, thus increasing the defense capability with the minimized costs of plant immunity. Meanwhile, OsiSh-2 improved the chloroplast development and optimally maintained the expression of proteins related to plant growth under pathogen stress, thus promoting the crop yield. Our results provided a representative example of an endophyte-mediated modulation of disease resistance and fitness in the host plant. The multilayer effects of OsiSh-2 implicate a promising future of using endophytic actinobacteria for disease control and crop yield promotion. IMPORTANCE Under disease stress, activation of defense response in plants often comes with the cost of a reduction in growth and yield, which is referred as the growth-defense trade-off. The microorganisms which can be recruited by plants to mitigate the growth-defense trade-off are of great value in crop breeding. Here, we reported a rice endophytic actinomycetes Streptomyces hygroscopicus OsiSh-2, which can improve host performances on resistance to rice blast while still sustaining high yield in the 4-year field trials. The proteomic, physiological, and transcriptional profiling data offer insights into the molecular basis underlying the balancing between defense and growth in OsiSh-2-rice symbiont. The findings provide an example for the endophyte-mediated modulation of growth-defense trade-offs in plants and indicated the promising application of endophytic actinobacterial strains in agriculture to breed “microbe-optimized crops.”

In organisms, ribonucleic acid (RNA) plays an essential role. Its function is being discovered more and more. Due to the conserved nature of RNA sequences, its function mainly depends on the RNA secondary structure. The discovery of an approximate relationship between two RNA secondary structures helps to understand their functional relationship better. It is an important and urgent task to explore structural similarities from the graphical representation of RNA secondary structures. In this paper, a novel graphical analysis method based on the triple vector curve representation of RNA secondary structures is proposed. A combinational method involving a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and fractal dimension with sliding window is introduced to analyze and compare the graphs derived from feature extraction; after that, the distance matrix is generated. Then, the distance matrix is analyzed by clustering and visualized as a clustering tree. RNA virus and noncoding RNA datasets are applied to perform experiments and analyze the clustering tree. The results show that the proposed method yields more accurate results in the comparison of RNA secondary structures.

Based on a synergistic digestion method of ultraviolet combined with ozone (UV/O3), this article investigates the reaction characteristics of nitrogen-containing compounds (N-compounds) in water and the influence of ions on digestion efficiency. In this respect, a novel and efficient AOPs-based dual-environmental digestion method for the determination of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in waters with complex components is proposed, in the hopes of improving the detection efficiency and accuracy of total nitrogen via online monitoring. The results show that inorganic and organic N-compounds have higher conversion rates in alkaline and acidic conditions, respectively. Meanwhile, the experimental results on the influence of Cl−, CO32−, and HCO3− on the digestion process indicate that Cl− can convert to radical reactive halogen species (RHS) in order to promote digestion efficiency, but CO32− and HCO3− cause a cyclic reaction consuming numerous •OH, weakening the digestion efficiency. Ultimately, to verify the effectiveness of this novel digestion method, total dissolved nitrogen samples containing ammonium chloride, urea, and glycine in different proportions were digested under the optimal conditions: flow rate, 0.6 L/min; reaction temperature, 40 °C; pH in acidic conditions, 2; digestion time in acidic condition, 10 min; pH in alkaline conditions, 11; digestion time in alkaline conditions, 10 min. The conversion rate (CR) of samples varied from 93.23% to 98.64%; the mean CR was greater than 95.30%. This novel and efficient digestion method represents a potential alternative for the digestion of N-compounds in the routine analysis or online monitoring of water quality.

In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles emerging from the period annulus by perturbing the Hamiltonian system x˙=y,y˙=x(x2-1)(x2+1)(x2+2). The period annulus has a heteroclinic cycle connecting two hyperbolic saddles as the outer boundary. It is proved that there exist at most 4 and at least 3 limit cycles emerging from the period annulus, and 3 limit cycles are near the boundaries.

Nations worldwide must collaborate to tackle the challenge of improving carbon emission efficiency and optimizing land use effectively. This study extends the study area from provinces and cities, regional city clusters, and countries to 136 major countries in the world, and shows the differences between countries. The paper analyzed the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and influencing factors of land use carbon emission efficiency (LCEE) in these 136 countries from 2000 to 2019 using the super-efficiency slacks-based measure data envelopment analysis (Super-SBM DEA) model, global malmquist index, spatial autocorrelation measurement tools and Spatial Durbin model. It can help to promote low-carbon and green development while simultaneously improving the global LCEE. The findings indicate that: (1) Over the study period, there is a trend toward a decline in the LCEE worldwide. (2) The primary cause of the worldwide LCEE’s declining trend during the study period is the reduction in technical efficiency. (3) The low-low cluster type accounts for more, while the high-high agglomeration type accounts for less and exhibits a sluggish growth pattern. On the whole, there is a phenomenon of non-aggregation and non-uniformity. It is necessary to increase the driving effect of high-high cluster radiation. (4) Economic development level, investment level, population size, public service level and environmental sustainability level all have a significant impact on LCEE, while industrial development level has no significant impact on LCEE. From a global perspective, the radiation driving role of countries with high LCEE should be increased. Improve the efficiency and technological level of land use emission in light of local conditions, and promote independent innovation in green and low-carbon technologies. This is conducive to the establishment of long-term low-carbon growth.

Abstract Visualizing latent evidence at a crime scene has gained popularity in the field of forensic science during the past few years. Thus, this study designs and develops a one-click device for the rapid visualization and extraction of latent evidence through multimodal light source integration and light-guiding technology. Our device exhibits multispectral and angle timing functions for storing the captured evidence images. Furthermore, the geometric registration, feature extraction, feature optimization, and feature integration of the evidence images are processed by a backend system, and the images are then presented. Overall, this study enhances the standard and the technical content of evidence extraction and simplifies the evidence extraction process. In addition to the rapid handling of the scenes captured at a crime scene, the one-click device has other notable advantages, such as fast imaging, portability, being independent of the environmental conditions and the operator’s technical capabilities, and zero pollution to ensure the repeatability of material evidence extraction. Compared with the original optical forensics equipment, the spectrum and angle of our system are more extensive.

A 0.005% and 0.01% morin treatment was applied to treat mango fruits stored under ambient conditions (25 ± 1 °C) with 85–90% relative humidity, and the effects on quality indexes, enzyme activity related to antioxidation and cell wall degradation, and gene expressions involved in ripening and senescence were explored. The results indicate that a 0.01% morin application effectively delayed fruit softening and yellowing and sustained the nutritional quality. After 12 days of storage, the contents of soluble sugar and carotenoid in the treatment groups were 68.54 mg/g and 11.20 mg/100 g, respectively, lower than those in control, while the vitamin C content in the treatment groups was 0.58 mg/g, higher than that in control. Moreover, a morin application successively enhanced the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD), but reduced the activity of polygalacturonase (PG) and pectin lyase (PL). Finally, real-time PCR and correlation analysis suggested that morin downregulated the ethylene biosynthesis (ACS and, ACO) and signal transduction (ETR1, ERS1, EIN2, and ERF1) genes, which is positively associated with softening enzymes (LOX, EXP, βGal, and EG), carotenoid synthesis enzymes (PSY and, LCYB), sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS), and uncoupling protein (UCP) gene expressions. Therefore, a 0.01% morin treatment might efficiently retard mango fruit ripening and senescence to sustain external and nutritional quality through ethylene-related pathways, which indicates its preservation application.

Laboratory medicine plays an important role in clinical diagnosis. However, no laboratory‐based artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostic system has been applied in current clinical practice due to the lack of robustness and interpretability. Although many attempts have been made, it is still difficult for doctors to adopt the existing machine learning (ML) patterns in interpreting laboratory (lab) big data. Here, a knowledge‐and‐data‐driven laboratory diagnostic system is developed, termed AI‐based Lab tEst tO diagNosis (AI LEON), by integrating an innovative knowledge graph analysis framework and “mixed XGboost and Genetic Algorithm (MiXG)” technique to simulate the doctor's laboratory‐based diagnosis. To establish AI LEON, we included 89 116 949 laboratory data and 10 423 581 diagnosis data points from 730 113 participants. Among them, 686 626 participants were recruited for training and validating purposes with the remaining for testing purposes. AI LEON automatically identified and analyzed 2071 lab indexes, resulting in multiple disease recommendations that involved 441 common diseases in ten organ systems. AI LEON exhibited outstanding transparency and interpretability in three universal clinical application scenarios and outperformed human physicians in interpreting lab reports. AI LEON is an advanced intelligent system that enables a comprehensive interpretation of lab big data, which substantially improves the clinical diagnosis.

The wax gourd is commonly grown in many countries because of its high nutritional and economic value. While the genes for the fruit shape and peel colour of wax gourd have been reported, the InDel markers linked to these genes remain undeveloped. In this study, the InDel markers linked to fruit-shape (Bch02G016830) and peel-colour (Bch05G003950) genes were developed from resequenced data. We used 120 inbred lines, 536 isolated populations, and 4 commercial hybrids to evaluate the validity and application value of the InDel markers. The accuracy rates of nine pairs of fruit-shape InDel markers (GX1-GX9) were 84.16–91.66% in 120 inbred lines. The accuracy rates of 27 pairs of peel-colour InDel markers (PS1-PS27) within approximately 3.0 Mb upstream and 3.0 Mb downstream of the peel-colour gene were 100% and those of 6 pairs of peel-colour InDel markers (PS28-PS33) within 3.0–20 Mb upstream and downstream of the peel-colour gene were 55.83–90% in 120 inbred lines. The purity of four commercial hybrids determined using GX1, GX2, PS13, and PS14 was highly consistent with the field results for purity determination. Our results provide important information for genetic linkage map construction, molecular-marker-assisted selective breeding, and purity determination of wax gourd hybrids.

Mesoporous silica-coated multi-branched gold nanoparticles (bAu@mesoSiO2) aiming for enhanced Raman sensing for 4-bromomethcathinone (4-BMC) detection is reported. In this work, we present an effective strategy to probe the Raman signal of 4-MBC. Morphologies and optical properties of the synthesized materials with different [Au3+]/[Au0] ratios are characterized utilizing transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–vis and mid-infrared spectroscopy. Both experimental and theoretical (simulation) studies were investigated. Taking advantages of gold core branches that provide highly localized and strongly enhanced electromagnetic fields due to plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is observed. The experimental results show that the SERS intensity exhibits a 100-fold increase with the increased average length and quantity of gold branches (nano tips). The analytical performance yielded a detection limit of 0.1 mg/ml for the 4-MBC target within 5 mins. The sensing method will likely find further improvement and broad use in the forensic science. Besides rapid detection and portability, the combination of the Raman effect and enhanced materials imparts other notable advantages, such as its non-contact and free of reagents. Soluble solids content (SSC) is an important quality trait of wax gourd, but reports about its regulatory genes are scarce. In this study, the SSC regulatory gene BhSSC2.1 in wax gourd was mined via quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping based on high-density genetic mapping containing 12 linkage groups (LG) and bulked segregant analysis (BSA)-seq. QTL mapping and BSA-seq revealed for the first time that the SSC QTL (107.658–108.176 cM) of wax gourd was on Chr2 (LG2). The interpretable phenotypic variation rate and maximum LOD were 16.033% and 6.454, respectively. The QTL interval contained 13 genes. Real-time fluorescence quantitative expression analysis, functional annotation, and sequence analysis suggested that Bch02G016960, named BhSSC2.1, was a candidate regulatory gene of the SSC in wax gourd. Functional annotation of this gene showed that it codes for a NADP-dependent malic enzyme. According to BhSSC2.1 sequence variation, an InDel marker was developed for molecular marker-assisted breeding of wax gourd. This study will lay the foundation for future studies regarding breeding and understanding genetic mechanisms of wax gourd.

Object To study chest computed tomography (CT) findings in family clusters of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods Twenty-one patients with confirmed COVID-19 were enrolled at the West District Qingdao Municipal Hospital, the Fifth People's Hospital of Qinghai Province and Jiaozhou Central Hospital. Eleven were family clustered cases and 10 were sporadic cases not associated with family gatherings. Results Ten patients were male and 11 were female. The time elapsed onset of fever and cough to diagnosis was 3 to 7 days. The body temperatures of patients fluctuated between 36.7 and 38.9°C. One elderly female patient had no fever. On chest CT, 14 patients with family clustered COVID-19 had bilateral lung lesions. By contrast, 7 patients with no history of familial gatherings showed single lung exudative lesions or consolidation. Seven patients with family clustered COVID-19 had bilateral multiple exudative lesions. Four patients with no history of familial gathering had unilateral lesions. Conclusion Not all patients with COVID-19 have direct epidemiological links to an infected case. They may become infected because of poor protection. In patients with family clustered COVID-19, chest CT often showed multiple exudative lesions in both lungs. In some patients, symptoms may be complicated by influenza virus infection.

Introduction: The alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) model is superior to the Milan criteria in predicting the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after liver transplantation in European and Latin American populations. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive value of the AFP model in Chinese hepatitis B virus (HBV)–related cirrhosis HCC patients.Methods: A total of 189 patients with HBV-related cirrhotic HCC were included. The recurrence rate and survival rate were estimated, and predictability was assessed by the Net Reclassification Improvement (NRI) method.Results: Of the 189 patients, patients with an AFP score >2 had a higher recurrence rate at 5 years (48.94 vs. 13.53%, p < 0.05) and lower survival rate (43.96 vs. 68.97%, p < 0.05). Considering patients within the Milan criteria, a higher 5-year recurrence rate and lower survival rate were observed in patients with an AFP model score >2 points compared to patients with a score of ≤ 2 points (recurrence rate: 58.75 vs. 12.98%, p < 0.05; survival rate: 28.57 vs. 67.41%, p = 0.047). NRI analysis showed that the AFP model exhibited superior predictability as compared to the Milan criteria.Conclusions: The AFP model may be used as a selection tool for Chinese HBV patients who require liver transplantation due to HCC.

We report on a novel, green, and efficient organically synthetic method for the preparation of gold nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous silica (AuNPs@mesoSiO2). AuNPs@mesoSiO2 prepared by one-pot synthesis method using sodium citrate as the key reactant was applied for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) application in the analysis of diluted blood traces. The synthesized nanoparticles are of high quality, as characterized by use of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. They exhibit high surface areas (170.18â883Â m2/g) and significant SERS enhancement. Detection of diluted blood (v/v, 1:50) traces through AuNPs@mesoSiO2 enhanced SERS is demonstrated, which has not been studied in previous literature. The combination of the SERS and AuNPs@mesoSiO2 would be a valuable tool for forensic investigation. Keywords: Gold nanoparticles, Mesoporous materials, Synthesis, SERS, Blood trace

Hfq is a global regulator that is involved in environmental adaptation of bacteria and in pathogenicity. To gain insight into the role of Hfq in Vibrio alginolyticus, an hfq deletion mutant was constructed in V. alginolyticus ZJ-T strain and phenotypically characterized. Deletion of hfq led to an alteration of colony morphology and reduced extracellular polysaccharide production, a general impairment of growth in both rich medium and minimal media with different carbon sources or amino acids, enhanced sensitivity to oxidative stress and to several antibiotics. Furthermore, a differential transcriptomic analysis showed significant changes of transcript abundance for 306 protein coding genes, with 179 genes being up regulated and 127 down-regulated. Several of these changes could be related to the observed phenotypes of the mutant. Transcriptomic data also provided evidence for the induction of the extracytoplasmic stress response in absence of Hfq. Altogether, these findings point to broad regulatory functions for Hfq in V. alginolyticus cells, likely to underlie an important role in pathogenicity.

Weyl semimetal is the three-dimensional analog of graphene. According to quantum field theory, the appearance of Weyl points near the Fermi level will cause novel transport phenomena related to chiral anomaly. In the present paper, we report the experimental evidence for the long-anticipated negative magnetoresistance generated by the chiral anomaly in a newly predicted time-reversal-invariant Weyl semimetal material TaAs. Clear Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations have been detected starting from a very weak magnetic field. Analysis of the SdH peaks gives the Berry phase accumulated along the cyclotron orbits as π, indicating the existence of Weyl points.
