Image segmentation is a crucial process in the field of image processing. Multilevel threshold segmentation is an effective image segmentation method, where an image is segmented into different regions based on multilevel thresholds for information analysis. However, the complexity of multilevel thresholding increases dramatically as the number of thresholds increases. To address this challenge, this article proposes a novel hybrid algorithm, termed differential evolution-golden jackal optimizer (DEGJO), for multilevel thresholding image segmentation using the minimum cross-entropy (MCE) as a fitness function. The DE algorithm is combined with the GJO algorithm for iterative updating of position, which enhances the search capacity of the GJO algorithm. The performance of the DEGJO algorithm is assessed on the CEC2021 benchmark function and compared with state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. Additionally, the efficacy of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by performing multilevel segmentation experiments on benchmark images. The experimental results demonstrate that the DEGJO algorithm achieves superior performance in terms of fitness values compared to other metaheuristic algorithms. Moreover, it also yields good results in quantitative performance metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), and feature similarity index (FSIM) measurements.

Several indoor positioning systems that utilize visible light communication (VLC) have recently been developed. Due to the simple implementation and high precision, most of these systems are dependent on received signal strength (RSS). The position of the receiver can be estimated according to the positioning principle of the RSS. To improve positioning precision, an indoor three-dimensional (3D) visible light positioning (VLP) system with the Jaya algorithm is proposed. In contrast to other positioning algorithms, the Jaya algorithm has a simple structure with only one phase and achieves high accuracy without controlling the parameter settings. The simulation results show that an average error of 1.06 cm is achieved using the Jaya algorithm in 3D indoor positioning. The average errors of 3D positioning using the Harris Hawks optimization algorithm (HHO), ant colony algorithm with an area-based optimization model (ACO-ABOM), and modified artificial fish swam algorithm (MAFSA) are 2.21 cm, 1.86 cm and 1.56 cm, respectively. Furthermore, simulation experiments are performed in motion scenes, where a high-precision positioning error of 0.84 cm is achieved. The proposed algorithm is an efficient method for indoor localization and outperforms other indoor positioning algorithms.

Soil temperature directly affects the germination of seeds and the growth of crops. In order to accurately predict soil temperature, this study used RF and MLP to simulate shallow soil temperature, and then the shallow soil temperature with the best simulation effect will be used to predict the deep soil temperature. The models were forced by combinations of environmental factors, including daily air temperature (Tair), water vapor pressure (Pw), net radiation (Rn), and soil moisture (VWC), which were observed in the Hejiashan watershed on the Loess Plateau in China. The results showed that the accuracy of the model for predicting deep soil temperature proposed in this paper is higher than that of directly using environmental factors to predict deep soil temperature. In testing data, the range of MAE was 1.158–1.610 °C, the range of RMSE was 1.449–2.088 °C, the range of R2 was 0.665–0.928, and the range of KGE was 0.708–0.885 at different depths. The study not only provides a critical reference for predicting soil temperature but also helps people to better carry out agricultural production activities.

Irrigation water is the main type of water consumption in the Yanqi Basin irrigation district of Xinjiang, which is an oasis-type irrigation district in the arid region of Northwest China. With the continuous expansion of cultivated areas, there is an increasing demand for irrigation water, resulting in an irrigation efficiency paradox and the phenomenon of “the more water-saving, the more water-scarce”. In this study, the water balance method and the improved IWMI (International Water Management Institute) water balance method were used with remote sensing and statistical data from 1980 to 2020 to analyze the changes in the irrigation water supply, consumption, and loss for improvement in irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) in the Yanqi Basin. The results showed that there was an upward trend in the cultivated land area in the irrigation district of Yanqi Basin, as monitored with remote sensing from 1980 to 2020, and the values from the remote sensing data were higher than those from the yearbooks. According to the remote sensing data, the arable land area in the irrigation district increased from 1672 km2 in 1980 to 2494 km2 in 2020, thus showing a trend of expansion. The traditional water use efficiency in the irrigation district showed an increasing trend. The lowest value for the field water-use coefficient was 0.70 in 1998, and it exceeded to 0.81 from 2009 to 2020. The canal water-use coefficient was as low as 0.50 in 1998 and increased from 0.54 in 2009 to 0.82 in 2020. The irrigation water-use coefficient increased from 0.35 in 1998 to 0.68 in 2020, with a general upward trend. In this study, the water consumption ratio indicator DFg (depleted fraction), determined using the improved water balance method, increased from 0.8390 in 1980 to 0.8562 in 2020, although it showed an overall decreasing trend, and the average was 0.8436. Cultivated land’s actual irrigation water consumption per unit area reached the highest value of 8.41 × 106 m3/hm2/a in 2011 and the minimum value of 4.01 × 106 m3/hm2/a in 2020, and from 1980 to 2020 it showed a decreasing trend, while the total water diversion showed an increasing trend due to the continuous expansion of arable land. From 1980 to 2020, water diversion into the irrigation district changed from 1.214 km3 to 1.000 km3, and it reached a maximum of 1.593 km3 in 2000; water diversion into the irrigation district showed an overall upward trend. The positive impact of the post-2000 water conservation phase with the adaptation of water-saving irrigation technology was clear, as the findings showed an increase in IWUE in the Yanqi Basin irrigation district. These results provide a theoretical basis for breaking the paradox of irrigation efficiency, which can be used in the water resource management of irrigation districts.

The remaining useful life (RUL) prediction of Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is a crucial element of battery health management. The accurate prediction of RUL enables the maintenance and replacement of batteries with potential safety hazards, which ensures safe and stable battery operation. This paper develops a new method for the RUL prediction of LIBs, which is combined with complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEDMAN), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and support vector regression (SVR). Firstly, the CEEMDAN is employed to perform noise reduction in battery capacity data for prediction accuracy improvement. Then, an SVR model optimized by the WOA is proposed to predict the RUL. Finally, the public battery datasets are selected to validate the performance of the CEEMDAN-WOA-SVR method. The RUL prediction accuracy of the CEEMDAN-WOA-SVR method is better than the WOA-SVR method. In addition, a comparison is made between the proposed method and the existing methods (artificial bee colony algorithm-SVR method, ensemble empirical mode decomposition-gray wolf optimization-SVR method). The results show that the accurate prediction of the proposed method is superior to the two methods.

Abstract In order to discuss the effect of rainfall patterns and land use types on soil erosion, the experiment is carried out under natural rainfall events on different kinds of runoff plots in Zhangjiachong watershed. Based on the observed data of 44 individual rainfall events including moderate, heavy and storm rainfall, the differences of erosion modulus among hedgerows plots, terrace plots, and slope plots under different rainfall patterns are analyzed. And the effects of hedgerow and terrace patterns on control of soil loss are revealed by RUSLE. Wilcoxon signed rank test is applied to analyze the significant difference of erosion modulus in different plots and the coefficient of variation is used to compare the characteristics of erosion modulus under different rainfall patterns. The results show that the soil erosion modulus of earth banked terrace has the highest value and the lowest soil erosion modulus occurs in the slope land with hedgerows. The coefficients of variation for soil erosion modulus under heavy and storm rainfall are larger than that of moderate rainfall. Hedgerow pattern can effectively control soil erosion under moderate and heavy rainfall while the effect of hedgerow is considerably weakened under storm rainfall. Earth banked terraces own the highest erosion modulus followed by slope land and stone dike terraces.

In the past, a great deal of research has been conducted to determine the fractal properties of river networks, and there are many kinds of methods calculating their fractal dimensions. In this paper, we compare two most common methods: one is geomorphic fractal dimension obtained from the bifurcation ratio and the stream length ratio, and the other is box-counting method. Firstly, synthetic fractal trees are used to explain the role of the junction angle on the relation between two kinds of fractal dimensions. The obtained relationship curves indicate that box-counting dimension is decreasing with the increase of the junction angle when geomorphic fractal dimension keeps constant. This relationship presents continuous and smooth convex curves with junction angle from 60° to 120° and concave curves from 30° to 45°. Then 70 river networks in China are investigated in terms of their two kinds of fractal dimensions. The results confirm the fractal structure of river networks. Geomorphic fractal dimensions of river networks are larger than box-counting dimensions and there is no obvious relationship between these two kinds of fractal dimensions. Relatively good non-linear relationships between geomorphic fractal dimensions and box-counting dimensions are obtained by considering the role of the junction angle. Evapotranspiration is the important feedback of the catchment into the atmosphere. However, in catchment hydrological modeling, the feedback of evaporation into the atmosphere is not closed and potential evaporation is always a meteorological forcing which is not dependent on the actual evaporation. A modeling framework to close the feedback of evapotranspiration into the atmosphere (FCEA) based on the evapotranspiration complementary relationship was proposed in the catchment hydrological modeling, and the effect of land-use changes on the runoff and evapotranspiration in the upper reach of Han River of China was investigated in the FCEA. Brutsaert uses the boundary condition analysis method to propose a nonlinear complementary relationship based on polynomial formula (B2015 function), which was applied in the study area, and the parameters were calibrated based on the catchment water balance of 1972–1990 and validated in 1991–2017. The actual evapotranspiration (AET) in the study area was estimated based on the complementary model in the upper reach of Han River. The SWAT model was used to simulate the catchment hydrological processes in the study area from 1972 to 2017. The evapotranspiration in the upper reach of Han River was studied in four scenarios to realize the feedback of evapotranspiration to the atmosphere and analyze the impact of the evapotranspiration feedback to the change of runoff in the basin. The results showed that the annual runoff in the upper reach of the Han River will increase, and the annual actual evapotranspiration will decrease in the long-term simulations in Scenarios 1 and 4. In Scenarios 2 and 3, with the increase of woodland, the annual runoff will decrease due to the feedback to the atmosphere, and annual actual evapotranspiration will increase, which is related to the increase in ecological water demand caused by the increase in woodland. Converting grassland into farmland will increase the runoff of the watershed. It is important to improve the land-use planning policy in the Han River Basin in order to realize the sustainable development of the river basin.

Visible-light communication (VLC) is a promising method for indoor positioning. The received signal strength algorithm is the most widely used localization algorithm in visible-light positioning (VLP) systems. However, in a VLP system, the photodiode (PD) will have a small rotation angle during movement, which will result in a massive positioning error ignoring the angle. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) indoor VLP system using an improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA) is proposed to reduce the error caused by the PD rotation. Firstly, the model of the VLC system with the PD rotation angles is introduced. Secondly, a novel IWOA with an elite opposition-based learning strategy and Lévy flight strategy is proposed. The convergence speed and accuracy of the WOA are improved. Lastly, the IWOA algorithm is efficiently utilized to address the problem with the PD rotation in the indoor VLP system. Simulation results show that the average error of 3D positioning is 2.14 cm with no PD rotation. When the PD has a rotation angle, the average positioning error estimated by ignoring the rotation angle is 27.14 cm, while that estimated by considering the rotation angle is 7.85 cm. In the VLP system, the positioning error with the PD rotation angle is effectively reduced by the proposed algorithm, which can be applied in a variety of indoor location scenes.

The Han River is the water source of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and the “Han River to Wei River Water Diversion Project” in China. In order to ensure that the water quality and quantity are sufficient for the water diversion project, the natural forest protection project, river chief system and other measures have been implemented in the Han River by the government. At the same time, several large reservoirs have been built in the Han River basin and perform the functions of water supply and hydropower generation, which is an important type of clean power. Under the influence of human activities, the coupling interaction between humans and water in the upper reach of the Han River drives the socio-hydrological evolution process. In this study, from the perspective of socio-hydrology, a model of socio-hydrological evolution (SHE) in the Han River in southern Shaanxi was built to simulate the potential evolution path of the socio-hydrological system and determine possible measures for the sustainable governance of the river basin. By adjusting the model parameters, four future scenarios were established: natural continuation, economic development, environmental protection and industrial adjustment scenarios. Taking 2018 as the base year, the evolution of socio-hydrology in the upper reaches of the Han River was predicted under the four scenarios from 2019 to 2045. The simulation results show that: (1) In the entire study area, except for domestic water, the water consumption of other departments show an upward or stable trend. There are differences in water consumption changes in the upper and lower sections, which are related to the different socio-economic conditions. (2) Comparing different development scenarios, the industrial adjustment and environmental protection scenarios are superior to the other scenarios. Natural continuation and economic development scenarios appear to be unfavorable for the sustainability of water resources and the economy. (3) In addition, based on the development scenarios, some policy suggestions are put forward, such as reducing the irrigation water quota, appropriately adjusting the industrial structure and promoting the growth of the urban population and the development of urbanization.
