Abstract Charge density waves (CDWs) involved with electronic and phononic subsystems simultaneously are a common quantum state in solid-state physics, especially in low-dimensional materials. However, CDW phase dynamics in various dimensions are yet to be studied, and their phase transition mechanism is currently moot. Here we show that using the distinct temperature evolution of orientation-dependent ultrafast electron and phonon dynamics, different dimensional CDW phases are verified in CuTe. When the temperature decreases, the shrinking of c-axis length accompanied with the appearance of interchain and interlayer interactions causes the quantum fluctuations (QF) of the CDW phase until 220 K. Abstract The fabrication and development of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with exceptional functionalities is a rapidly expanding field with numerous applications. When the role of entropy in HEAs is considered, the extrinsic factors, such as the existence of grains and different phases, need to be separated from the intrinsic configurations of the atomic lattice. Here, we fabricated the CoCrFeNi2Al0.5 HEA/muscovite heterostructures, and some were prepared as epitaxial bilayers and others were prepared as an amorphous system. These two systems are classified into atomic-site disordered (ASD) and structurally disordered (SD) states, respectively, without the extrinsic effects for the determination of the crystal lattice role in high-entropy states. In this study, we determined the role of the structure order in correlation with the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of HEAs using a combination of energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, magneto-transport, ac magnetometry, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy with magnetic circular dichroism. The ASD state showed fully metallic behavior. In contrast, the SD state showed a metallic behavior with intense magnetic saturation, which was called Kondo-like behavior, under 50 K with a low-temperature coefficient of resistivity of ~64 ppm/°C. The difference between the saturation magnetic moment and the electron relaxation behavior in the ASD and SD states resulted from the existence of the structural order affecting the atomic distance and periodicity to modify the exchange interaction and tune the electron-phonon interaction for scattering. The ferromagnetic behavior contributed by Co, Fe, and Ni atoms was probed by X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism to understand the magnetic interactions in the ASD and SD states.

The rich physical properties unveiled in a plethora of transition and rare-earth metal oxides have been attributed to the intricate interplays between the orbital, charge, and spin degrees of freedom. Among them, rare-earth manganites (RMnO3) have been attracting tremendous attention owing to the ionic size-induced lattice distortion dictated by the Goldschmidt tolerance factor and the substantial Jahn–Teller distortion unique to Mn3+ ions, which evidently have resulted in a variety of emergent characteristics in electronic, magnetic, and orbital ordering. In this work, we deliberately engineered the orientation of a series of orthorhombic YMnO3 (o-YMO) films grown on SrTiO3(100) [STO(100)] and SrTiO3(110) [STO(110)] substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) and reciprocal space mapping revealed that o-YMO/STO(100) is c-axis-oriented and o-YMO/STO(110) is a-axis-oriented, respectively. The XRD ϕ-scans further indicate that both films have excellent in-plane crystallinity, allowing the exploration of anisotropies along the respective crystallographic orientations. Indeed, the x-ray absorption linear dichroism spectroscopy taken along the respective crystallographic orientations evidently exhibited substantial anisotropy. Theoretical fitting with configuration interaction cluster calculations suggests that the d3z2−r2 orbitals are parallel to YMO[001]/(100), leading to stronger electron scattering along the c-axis. Independent polarization-dependent Δ R/R spectra obtained using the femtosecond pump–probe method exhibited substantial anisotropic behaviors in carrier relaxation dynamics when probing along different crystallographic orientations, presumably due to orbital ordering anisotropies.

It is challenging to construct lateral homostructures with controllable geometry and repeated alternating configurations. Here the authors develop a generic approach for fabricating twisted lateral homostructures with tunable crystal orientation, epitaxial constrain, and phase stability.

We report superconductivity at an onset critical temperature below 3.1 K in topological insulator ∼200-nm-thick Bi2Te3 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental mapping and Auger electron spectroscopy elemental depth profiling, we clearly identified bismuth (Bi) precipitation and Bi cluster signatures. Superconductivity in the Bi2Te3 films was attributed to the proximity effect of Bi clusters precipitated on the surface of the Bi2Te3 films.
