Abstract Background Historically, tobacco companies have used flavored tobacco products to enhance the appeal of tobacco consumption, encourage initiation and experimentation of tobacco use, and contribute to sustained tobacco use. While flavored tobacco products are regulated in several countries, there is no existing regulation on flavored tobacco products in the Philippines, specifically for cigarettes and cigars. This study aims to update evidence on the flavored tobacco product landscape in the Philippines by assessing both the flavor descriptors and flavor imagery featured on cigarette and cigar packaging. Results We collected 106 cigarette and cigar products from four major cities in the National Capital Region, Balanced Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Of these 106 cigarette and cigar products, 62 (58.49%) had flavor descriptors. Three crushable capsule products did not feature any flavor descriptor but were included for flavor imagery examination. We identified five categories of flavor descriptors: menthol, concept descriptors, tobacco, beverages, and other flavors. Out of 62 packs, ten featured more than one flavor descriptor on the packaging. Menthol flavor descriptors comprised the majority of flavor descriptors. Imagery and other graphic elements closely resonate with and enhance the flavor descriptors found on these packs. Conclusions This study aimed to update the evidence on the flavored tobacco product landscape in the Philippines and address their absence of regulation. Regulating flavored tobacco products requires a comprehensive policy approach complemented by complete enforcement. Flavor substances, flavor descriptors, and flavor imagery must be regulated altogether; however, it is ideal to enforce a ban on flavored tobacco products in compliance with the WHO FCTC, to which the Philippines is a signatory. Policymakers should consider plain packaging as an intervention to eliminate the appeals associated with flavored tobacco products.

Introduction: The complex health, social, and economic consequences of tobacco smoking underscore the importance of incorporating reliable and scalable data collection on smoking status and habits into research across various disciplines. Given that smoking impacts voice production, we aimed to develop a gender and language-specific vocal biomarker of smoking status. Methods: Leveraging data from the Colive Voice study, we used statistical analysis methods to quantify the effects of smoking on voice characteristics. Various voice feature extraction methods combined with machine learning algorithms were then used to produce a gender and language-specific (English and French) digital vocal biomarker to differentiate smokers from never-smokers. Results: A total of 1,332‬ participants were included after propensity score matching (mean age = 43.6 [13.65], 64.41% are female, 56.68% are English speakers, 50% are smokers and 50% are never-smokers). We observed differences in voice features distribution: for women, the fundamental frequency F0, the formants F1, F2, and F3 frequencies and the harmonics-to-noise ratio were lower in smokers compared to never-smokers (p < 0.05) while for men no significant disparities were noted between the two groups. The accuracy and AUC of smoking status prediction reached 0.71 and 0.76, respectively, for the female participants, and 0.65 and 0.68, respectively, for the male participants. Conclusion: We have shown that voice features are impacted by smoking. We have developed a novel digital vocal biomarker that can be used in clinical and epidemiological research to assess smoking status in a rapid, scalable, and accurate manner using ecological audio recordings.

Abstract Tobacco smoking, a significant public health concern globally, is associated with a rise in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and preventable deaths, with pronounced impacts in conflict zones like Gaza. A cross-sectional study, conducted in 2020, in Gaza focused on individuals over 40 years of age, aiming to identify predictors of tobacco use and its links to diseases like coronary artery disease (CAD), chronic lung disease (CLD), and stroke using regression analysis. The research, based on the Gaza NCD study data with 4576 participants and a 96.6% response rate, found an overall tobacco smoking prevalence of 19.4%, with higher rates among men. After adjusting for various factors, the study identified significant associations between cigarette smoking in men and adverse health outcomes, such as CAD and CLD, with adjusted odds ratios (OR) of 1.67, 95% CI (1.22–2.29) and 1.68, 95% CI (1.21–2.33) respectively. However, after adjusting for independent variables, shisha smoking in men showed no association with these health outcomes. The findings of this study could assist other researchers in designing interventions aimed at reducing smoking prevalence by utilizing the associated factors identified in our analysis, such as age, education level, physical activity, and body mass index among men in Gaza.

Background: Passive exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in the home and other places, and active smoking throughout later childhood all have an impact on the respiratory health of children. Parental smoking has been associated with respiratory symptoms and deteriorated lung function in children. Objective: This study aims to determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms among children and their association with passive smoking and respiratory symptoms among children aged up to 12 years in selected tertiary care hospitals in Sindh. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study, conducted in two tertiary care hospitals from where 217 children aged up to 12 years were selected who attended the pediatric OPD for a routine checkup. Children suffering from malignancies and other health issues such as chest infection and congenital pulmonary airway malformation were excluded. Results: A total of 217 children with a mean age of 6.4 years (±5.0) years participated in this study. Approximately 73.6 % of children between 0-6 years and 85% between 7-12 years had cough respectively. The results show a significant association between the smoking status of parents and respiratory health among children (0.049), according to the analysis symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath while running/walking, and getting tired p-values 0.038, 0.035, and 0.003 easily show statistically significant association whereas phlegm production shows non-significant (p-value 0.380) association with passive smoking exposure among children up to 12 years of age, experienced in last 30 days for more than 2 times/week. Conclusion: Children’s health experts should discuss the negative effects of smoking and the necessity of reducing exposure to secondhand smoke; parents should be informed about these issues and advised not to smoke in front of children.

Prediction plays a ubiquitous role in cancer care. At every stage of the illness, the patient, the physician, and the family must make numerous decisions. Utilizing epidemiological, clinical, biological, lifestyle, and genetic factors, a cancer-specific risk assessment model calculates the likelihood of developing cancer. In India, oral cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer, affecting nearly 3,000,00 individuals annually. Because it is in the premalignant stage, oral cancer is easily detectable in the oral cavity. Prompt identification of this lesion can result in better outcomes and a higher standard of living. Advanced statistical techniques have been used to develop prediction algorithms or risk scores that identify individuals with a high risk of developing oral cancer. With the aid of these risk assessment models, specific individuals can be screened to aid in the early detection of the disease, which may result in better outcomes and lifestyle modifications. Finding the best model among the current risk models for oral cancer may be aided by a thorough examination of all these models. Finding and assessing the risk model that primary care physicians can use and easily apply in clinical practice will be made easier with a succinct and straightforward comparison of the models. This review compares the current models to determine which has the best performance metrics, which could lead to a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of various risk prediction models of oral cancer.

Introduction Previous studies have identified several risk factors for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study was intended to examine the potential risk of ACS associated with khat and tobacco use. Methods A case-control study of 344 people (172 cases and 172 controls) was conducted at Prince Mohammed Bin Nasser Hospital in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, from April to September 2019. The cases and controls were matched for age (±5 years) and gender. Data were analyzed using descriptive, inferential, and modeling analyses. We utilized the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) to express the results. Results The prevalence of ever khat chewing among all study participants was 29.1%, significantly higher for the cases with ACS than for the control group (43.6% vs 14.5%, p 0.05). Abstract Cold stress can impact plant biology at both the molecular and morphological levels. We cultivated two different types of tobacco seedlings using distinct seeding methods, observing significant differences in their cold tolerance at 4 °C. After 12 h cold stress, shallow water seeding cultivation treatment demonstrates a relatively good growth state with slight wilting of the leaves. Tobacco grown using the float system exhibited short, thick roots, while those cultivated through shallow water seeding had elongated roots with more tips and forks. After cold stress, the shallow water seeding cultivation treatment demonstrated higher antioxidant enzyme activity, and lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Transcriptome analysis was performed on the leaves of these tobacco seedlings at three stages of cold treatment (before cold stress, after cold stress, and after 3 days of recovery). Upon analyzing the raw data, we found that the shallow water seeding cultivation treatment was associated with significant functional enrichment of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) biosynthesis and NAD metabolism before cold stress, enrichment of functions related to the maintenance of cellular structure after cold stress, and substantial functional enrichment related to photosynthesis during the recovery period. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was conducted, identifying several hub genes that may contribute to the differences in cold tolerance between the two tobacco seedlings. Hub genes related to energy conversion were predominantly identified in shallow water seeding cultivation treatment during our analysis, surpassing findings in other areas. These include the AS gene, which controls the synthesis of NAD precursors, the PED1 gene, closely associated with fatty acid β-oxidation, and the RROP1 gene, related to ATP production. Overall, our study provides a valuable theoretical basis for exploring improved methods of cultivating tobacco seedlings. Through transcriptome sequencing technology, we have elucidated the differences in gene expression in different tobacco seedlings at three time points, identifying key genes affecting cold tolerance in tobacco and providing possibilities for future gene editing.

Abstract Objective Türkiye is the leading country that has been applying the MPOWER criteria of the World Health Organization for years. However, the prevalence of smoking among nurses appears to be high, according to the literature. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence, addiction levels, and dynamics of tobacco smoking among nurses in Türkiye. Method In this descriptive cross-sectional study, a questionnaire (prepared in cooperation with the “World Health Organization”) and the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence were administered to 529 nurses working at a tertiary-care university hospital in 2020. Logistic regression was performed to determine factors predicting smoking. Results The prevalence of smoking among nurses was 32.7% (n = 173). The mean Fagerström test score indicated a "low dependence" level (score: 3 ± 2.6). Both results were higher for males. A relationship was found between trying smoking cigarette and hookah. Of the “current smokers” group, 102 (60.4%) stated that they wanted to quit smoking. Only 21 (27.6%) of the nurses who have tried to quit smoking thus far have received professional help. Conclusion The prevalence of smoking among nurses working at a tertiary-care university hospital was relatively low compared to that among nurses in Türkiye. While females are normally expected to smoke less, the high prevalence of smoking among nurses (most of them female) raises the question of the professional basis of this situation. However, the low rate of receiving professional help reveals the lack of promotion and accessibility of smoking cessation outpatient clinics in the faculty environment. Finally, the perception that hookah is an alternative tobacco product leads to cigarette smoking. The good news was that nurses had a low dependency rate.

Abstract Background The cost of tobacco is one of the most reported reasons to quit smoking. The Netherlands increased tobacco taxes twice in the span of nine months: a €1 increase per pack in April 2020, and a €0.12 increase per pack in January 2021. This study examines to what extent people report to think about quitting due to the upcoming tax increase(s), as well as how it relates to their age, income or educational level. Additionally, we examined whether thinking about quitting was associated with quit intention and quit behaviour, and whether these associations were different for the two tax increases. Methods Longitudinal data from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Netherlands Surveys, Cohort 2 were used (N = 5919 observations; wave 1 (February – March 2020): n = 2051; wave 2 (September – November 2020): n = 1919; wave 3 (June – July 2021): n = 1949). Generalised Estimating Equation (GEE) regressions were fit to test the associations between thinking about quitting due to the tax increase and post-tax increases in quit intention, serious quit attempts, and quitting smoking (≤ 1 cigarette a month), as well as sociodemographic variables. Results Circa half of the people who smoke reported thinking about quitting smoking due to the upcoming tax increase (Wave 1 = 51.3% (n = 1052); Wave 2 = 47.3% (n = 849)). Individuals who reported thinking about quitting smoking due to upcoming tax increase(s) were more likely to have increased their quit intention (aOR: 2.00, p ≤ .001) or have carried out a serious quit attempt (aOR:1.48, p ≤ .001) post-tax increase. More people attempted to quit smoking between wave 2 and 3 (post 2021 increase) than between wave 1 and 2 (post 2020 increase). We did not find an interaction effect between wave and thinking about quitting for quit intention, quit attempts, and quitting smoking. Conclusions Tax increases stimulate people to think about quitting. Thinking about quitting due to an upcoming tax increase was associated with more positive quit intention and serious quit attempts.

Abstract Background Ethiopia enacted a comprehensive tobacco control law in 2019, which bans tobacco advertising and promotion activities. However, compliance with these laws at points-of-sale (PoS) has not been studied, resulting in a lack of research evidence on how the regulations are implemented. The purpose of the study was to assess compliance with tobacco advertising and promotion laws at PoS in 10 cities in Ethiopia. Methods Multi-stage cluster sampling was used to select 1468 PoS (supermarkets, minimarkets, merchandise stores, regular shops, permanent kiosks, khat shops, street vendors, and food and drink wholesalers). Data were collected using standardized observational checklists. Tobacco advertising and promotion indicators were used to compute indoor and outdoor compliance. Poisson regression models with log link function and robust variance were used to assess factors associated with open display of cigarette packages and indoor non-compliance. Results The average indoor compliance rate was 92.9% (95% CI:92.3–93.5). Supermarkets had the highest compliance (99.7%), while permanent kiosks showed the lowest compliance (89.8%). The highest average indoor compliance was observed at PoS in Addis Ababa (98.0%). About 60% of PoS were fully compliant in indoors. Indoor open display of cigarette packages was prevalent (32.5%, 95% CI:30.0-35.1). The average outdoor compliance was 99.6% (95% CI:99.5–99.7). Outdoor full compliance was 96.5%. Open display of cigarettes was significantly higher in permanent kiosks (adjusted prevalence ratio (adjPR) 6.73; 95% CI: 3.96–11.42), regular shops (adjPR 5.16; 95% CI: 3.05–8.75), and khat shops (adjPR 2.06; 95% CI: 1.11–3.83), while indoor non-compliance was significantly higher in these same types of PoS. Conclusions While outdoor compliance rates were relatively high, the lower indoor compliance rates particularly due to the high prevalence of open cigarette package displays indicates a major area for improvement in enforcing anti-tobacco advertising and promotion laws.

Abstract Background Boron (B) is an essential micronutrient for plants. Inappropriate B supply detrimentally affects the productivity of numerous crops. Understanding of the molecular responses of plants to different B supply levels would be of significance in crop improvement and cultivation practices to deal with the problem. Results We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the transcriptome and proteome of tobacco seedlings to investigate the expression changes of genes/proteins in response to different B supply levels, with a particular focus on B deficiency. The global gene and protein expression profiles revealed the potential mechanisms involved in the responses of tobacco to B deficiency, including up-regulation of the NIP5;1-BORs module, complex regulation of genes/proteins related to cell wall metabolism, and up-regulation of the antioxidant machinery. Conclusion Our results demonstrated that B deficiency caused severe morphological and physiological disorders in tobacco seedlings, and revealed dynamic expression changes of tobacco genes/proteins in response to different B supply levels, especially to B deficiency, thus offering valuable insights into the molecular responses of tobacco to B deficiency.

Abstract Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has emerged as a novel endogenous gas signaling molecule, joining the ranks of nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). Recent research has highlighted its involvement in various physiological processes, such as promoting root organogenesis, regulating stomatal movement and photosynthesis, and enhancing plant growth, development, and stress resistance. Tobacco, a significant cash crop crucial for farmers’ economic income, relies heavily on root development to affect leaf growth, disease resistance, chemical composition, and yield. Despite its importance, there remains a scarcity of studies investigating the role of H2S in promoting tobacco growth. This study exposed tobacco seedlings to different concentrations of NaHS (an exogenous H2S donor) − 0, 200, 400, 600, and 800 mg/L. Results indicated a positive correlation between NaHS concentration and root length, wet weight, root activity, and antioxidant enzymatic activities (CAT, SOD, and POD) in tobacco roots. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that treatment with 600 mg/L NaHS significantly effected 162 key genes, 44 key enzymes, and two metabolic pathways (brassinosteroid synthesis and aspartate biosynthesis) in tobacco seedlings. The addition of exogenous NaHS not only promoted tobacco root development but also potentially reduced pesticide usage, contributing to a more sustainable ecological environment. Overall, this study sheds light on the primary metabolic pathways involved in tobacco root response to NaHS, offering new genetic insights for future investigations into plant root development.

Abstract Background Smoking is a leading cause of premature mortality and morbidity globally. The pollutants generated from smoke are not only harmful to smokers, but also to those exposed to secondhand smoke. As a result of increasingly restrictive indoor smoke-free policies in many countries, there is a tendency for tobacco smoking to move outdoors into partially enclosed settings in hospitality venues. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the impact of secondhand smoke on air quality in outdoor hospitality venues. Methods Two electronic databases PubMed and Scopus were searched from 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2022 for studies of air quality impacts from tobacco smoking in outdoor hospitality venues. A total of 625 studies were screened and 13 studies were included in this review. Results The majority (9 studies) of reviewed studies monitored PM2.5 concentration as an indicator of secondhand smoke. PM2.5 was reported from 10.9 µg/m3 to 91.0 µg/m3 in outdoor smoking areas, compared to 4.0 µg/m3 to 20.4 µg/m3 in outdoor control sites unaffected by smoking. Secondhand smoke can also drift into adjacent outdoor areas or infiltrate into indoor environments thus affecting air quality in spaces where smoking is not permitted. Conclusions The reviewed studies indicated that air quality within outdoor hospitality venues where smoking is permitted is unlikely to meet current World Health Organization (WHO) ambient air quality guidelines for PM2.5. Customers and staff in outdoor hospitality venues with active smoking, and in adjacent outdoor and indoor non-smoking areas, are potentially exposed to secondhand smoke at levels exceeding WHO guidelines. Stronger smoking control policies are recommended for outdoor hospitality venues to protect the health of customers and staff from harmful secondhand smoke exposure. Abstract Axillary bud is an important aspect of plant morphology, contributing to the final tobacco yield. However, the mechanisms of axillary bud development in tobacco remain largely unknown. To investigate this aspect of tobacco biology, the metabolome and proteome of the axillary buds before and after topping were compared. A total of 569 metabolites were differentially abundant before and 1, 3, and 5 days after topping. KEGG analyses further revealed that the axillary bud was characterized by a striking enrichment of metabolites involved in flavonoid metabolism, suggesting a strong flavonoid biosynthesis activity in the tobacco axillary bud after topping. Additionally, 9035 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified before and 1, 3, and 5 days after topping. Subsequent GO and KEGG analyses revealed that the DEPs in the axillary bud were enriched in oxidative stress, hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling pathway, and starch and sucrose metabolism. The integrated proteome and metabolome analysis revealed that the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) alteration in buds control dormancy release and sustained growth of axillary bud by regulating proteins involved in carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and lipid metabolism. Notably, the proteins related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and flavonoid biosynthesis were strongly negatively correlated with IAA content. These findings shed light on a critical role of IAA alteration in regulating axillary bud outgrowth, and implied a potential crosstalk among IAA alteration, ROS homeostasis, and flavonoid biosynthesis in tobacco axillary bud under topping stress, which could improve our understanding of the IAA alteration in axillary bud as an important regulator of axillary bud development.

Introduction: Nicotine is an environmental agent that can have a significant impact on the emergence of nicotine dependence when it interacts with particular candidate nicotine genes. Pharmacogenetics may have a role in the interindividual difference in adolescent smoking cessation. Identification of missense mutations (which are deleterious) in advance will help to formulate medication targeting it, to prevent the consequences in the future. The current study aimed to identify more potential and functional mutations of the cytochrome P450 2A6 (CYP2A6) gene by employing computational tools. Materials and Methods: The Ensembl database was used to collect the data on missense mutations of the human CYP2A6 gene. Computational tools such as Sorting Intolerant From Tolerant, Polymorphism Phenotyping, and PROtein Variation Effect ANalyzer are used to identify and screen missense mutation. One hundred and thirty missense mutations were identified and screened. The stability of protein variants and their pathogenicity were identified using I-Mutant and MutPred, respectively. Results: One hundred and eighteen single-nucleotide polymorphisms were determined to be harmful among the 130 missense variants that were examined, as predicted by all three of the computational tools mentioned in the methodology section. I-Mutant Suite identified about 104 variants with decreased stability and the other 14 variants showed increased stability. MutPred tool identified that out of the 118 missense variants, 69 were found to be highly pathogenic, 33 were found to be pathogenic, and two of them were not pathogenic. Conclusions: Nearly a hundred alleles in the CYP2A6 gene were identified as potentially pathogenic variants using data mining.

Introduction: Expanding knowledge on tobacco use and quitting outcomes in Chhattisgarh, India, is crucial. Limited data hinder the assessment of tobacco use prevalence and quitting outcomes in the region. This household-based cross-sectional study aimed to assess smokeless tobacco (SLT) use and quit behaviour among village dwellers aged 35–44 and 65–74 years in Jamul, Chhattisgarh. Materials and Methods: A survey was conducted among 450 participants, utilising a pretested questionnaire and data analysis using IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v23. Results: The study revealed that among the survey participants, 61.1% were males and 38.9% were females. The prevalence of SLT use was found to be 67.8%, with 59.1% of current SLT users reporting daily use. Middle-aged individuals predominantly chose gutkha, while khaini was more common among the elderly. Tobacco and paan with tobacco were also commonly used forms. Gudakhu, a popular SLT product for oral hygiene and easy defecation, was reported by 71.34% of participants. Television warnings and SLT packages proved to be successful methods for disseminating information about the dangers of SLT use. However, SLT users who attempted to quit independently reported encountering one or more withdrawal symptoms, which posed significant obstacles to quitting SLT. Conclusion: Community-based awareness programmes are implemented via regional television (TV) channels, coupled with cessation initiatives, including professional counselling, pharmaceutical interventions and support of peer. Changing attitudes against SLT use and promoting tobacco-free environments are prioritized. These strategies will effectively address SLT use and improve quitting outcomes in Jamul, Chhattisgarh, fostering a healthier community.

Introduction Tobacco-related diseases have a substantial economic impact in terms of medical expenses, loss of productivity, and premature death. Tobacco use is estimated to be responsible for more than 90000 deaths each year in Italy. We aimed to evaluate the annual direct economic impact on the National Health System of hospitalizations attributable to tobacco smoking in Italy. Methods We analyzed data from all the hospitalizations of patients aged ≥30 years that occurred in Italy for 12 selected tobacco-related diseases, during 2018. These diseases included oropharyngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer, laryngeal cancer, ischemic heart disease, stroke, diseases of arteries, arterioles, and capillaries, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We obtained information on 984322 hospital discharge records, including each hospitalization's direct costs. Using relative risk estimates from the scientific literature, we computed the population attributable fraction for various tobacco-related diseases to estimate the economic impact attributable to tobacco smoking. Results One-third of all hospitalizations occurred in 2018 in Italy among people aged ≥30 years for 12 tobacco-related diseases were found to be attributable to smoking, accounting for a total cost of €1.64 billion. Among the diseases considered, those with the highest expenditures attributable to tobacco smoking were ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and lung cancer, accounting for €556 million, €290 million, and €229 million, respectively. Conclusions Tobacco has a substantial economic impact in Italy, accounting for around 6% of the total cost of hospitalizations in 2018. This figure is expected to be largely underestimated due to several conservative assumptions adopted in the statistical analyses. It is imperative to prioritize comprehensive tobacco control measures to counteract the huge healthcare costs due to tobacco smoking.

Abstract Background Tobacco use is widely recognised as a significant risk factor for oral cancer and periodontal diseases. However, the relationship between various types of tobacco use and dental caries has been inconsistent. This study aimed to determine the association between smoking and smokeless tobacco and dental caries among patients in a tertiary care hospital in Quetta, Pakistan. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2020 to March 2021 among patients in a tertiary care hospital in Quetta, Pakistan. Oral examinations and interviews were performed according to the WHO Oral Health Survey basic methods (5th edition) to determine dental caries status, tobacco use, and oral health behaviours. The odds ratio and binary logistic regression were analysed to assess the association between the types (smoking tobacco, smokeless tobacco, and use of both types), duration, and frequency of tobacco use and high caries level (DMFT ≥ 5). Results Four hundred participants aged 18–65 were included, and 67.8% were tobacco users. Use of both smoking and smokeless tobacco (aOR = 14.7, 95%CI = 1.87–115.96, p = 0.011), smokeless tobacco only (aOR = 5.90, 95%CI = 1.89–18.37, p = 0.002), and smoking only (aOR = 2.18, 95%CI = 1.23–3.88, p = 0.008) were associated with significantly increased risk of high caries. Using tobacco for longer periods and more frequently daily also significantly increases the risk of high caries. Conclusion Smoking and smokeless tobacco are significantly associated with high dental caries after adjusting for other factors. Due to the high severity of dental caries and the high prevalence of tobacco use among Pakistani patients in this study, it is highly recommended to strengthen policies aimed at reducing tobacco usage, including smokeless forms.

SETTING: Urban setting in the Philippines. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of the ABC Approach developed by The Union as a tobacco-smoking cessation intervention for TB patients at a primary healthcare level in an urban setting in the Philippines. DESIGN: We set up an intervention group whose patients with TB received the ABC approach and a control group of patients with TB receiving only routine health education in Manila, The Philippines. We collected smoking status and the domestic secondhand-smoking (SHS) status data from patients with TB at months 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12. TB treatment outcome data were also collected. RESULTS: Patients with TB (n = 2,174) were enrolled upon TB registration. Smoking rates were consistently low in the intervention group (3.9% vs. 8.7% at Month 6). The odds ratios of both tobacco-smoking status and domestic SHS status in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group (tobacco-smoking status: P < 0.001, domestic SHS status: P < 0.01). TB treatment success rates were similar between the groups (85.0% vs. 87.3%; P = 0.201). CONCLUSION: The ABC approach successfully reduced tobacco-smoking rates, maintained low domestic SHS rates and TB treatment success rates in the Philippines.

Abstract Background Rhizoctonia solani is an important plant pathogen worldwide, and causes serious tobacco target spot in tobacco in the last five years. This research studied the biological characteristics of four different anastomosis groups strains (AG-3, AG-5, AG-6, AG-1-IB) of R. solani from tobacco. Using metabolic phenotype technology analyzed the metabolic phenotype differences of these strains. Results The results showed that the suitable temperature for mycelial growth of four anastomosis group strains were from 20 to 30oC, and for sclerotia formation were from 20 to 25oC. Under different lighting conditions, R. solani AG-6 strains produced the most sclerotium, followed by R. solani AG-3, R. solani AG-5 and R. solani AG-1-IB. All strains had strong oligotrophic survivability, and can grow on water agar medium without any nitrutions. They exhibited three types of sclerotia distribution form, including dispersed type (R. solani AG-5 and AG-6), peripheral type (R. solani AG-1-IB), and central type (R. solani AG-3). They all presented different pathogenicities in tobacco leaves, with the most virulent was noted by R. solani AG-6, followed by R. solani AG-5 and AG-1-IB, finally was R. solani AG-3. R. solani AG-1-IB strains firstly present symptom after inoculation. Metabolic fingerprints of four anastomosis groups were different to each other. R. solani AG-3, AG-6, AG-5 and AG-1-IB strains efficiently metabolized 88, 94, 71 and 92 carbon substrates, respectively. Nitrogen substrates of amino acids and peptides were the significant utilization patterns for R. solani AG-3. R. solani AG-3 and AG-6 showed a large range of adaptabilities and were still able to metabolize substrates in the presence of the osmolytes, including up to 8% sodium lactate. Four anastomosis groups all showed active metabolism in environments with pH values from 4 to 6 and exhibited decarboxylase activities. Conclusions The biological characteristics of different anastomosis group strains varies, and there were significant differences in the metabolic phenotype characteristics of different anastomosis group strains towards carbon source, nitrogen source, pH, and osmotic pressure.

Abstract Background The glandular trichomes of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) can efficiently produce secondary metabolites. They act as natural bioreactors, and their natural products function to protect plants against insect-pests and pathogens and are also components of industrial chemicals. To clarify the molecular mechanisms of tobacco glandular trichome development and secondary metabolic regulation, glandular trichomes and glandless trichomes, as well as other different developmental tissues, were used for RNA sequencing and analysis. Results By comparing glandless and glandular trichomes with other tissues, we obtained differentially expressed genes. They were obviously enriched in KEGG pathways, such as cutin, suberine, and wax biosynthesis, flavonoid and isoflavonoid biosynthesis, terpenoid biosynthesis, and plant–pathogen interaction. In particular, the expression levels of genes related to the terpenoid, flavonoid, and wax biosynthesis pathway mainly showed down-regulation in glandless trichomes, implying that they lack the capability to synthesize certain exudate compounds. Among the differentially expressed genes, 234 transcription factors were found, including AP2-ERFs, MYBs, bHLHs, WRKYs, Homeoboxes (HD-ZIP), and C2H2-ZFs. These transcription factor and genes that highly expressed in trichomes or specially expressed in GT or GLT. Following the overexpression of R2R3-MYB transcription factor Nitab4.5_0011760g0030.1 in tobacco, an increase in the number of branched glandular trichomes was observed. Conclusions Our data provide comprehensive gene expression information at the transcriptional level and an understanding of the regulatory pathways involved in glandular trichome development and secondary metabolism.

Tobacco is dried and fermented leaves. Tobacco epidemic is killing 8 million people a year. Thus, the study is done to assess the frequency of smokeless tobacco and Non tobacco in school students. School based Interventional study conducted among 373 students of 7th to 10th standard in a private high school, in our city. Data collected was entered in Excel and analysis was done using SPSS software version 23.0. Around 362 (97%) students were aware that tobacco usage affects health. Around 58 (16 %) students had consumed non tobacco products and 11 (3%) students had consumed smokeless tobacco ever in their lifetime. Abstract Background Quality smoking data is crucial for assessing smoking-related health risk and eligibility for interventions related to that risk. Smoking information collected in primary care practices (PCPs) is a major data source; however, little is known about the PCP smoking data quality. This project compared PCP smoking data to that collected in the Māori and Pacific Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening programme. Methods A two stage review was conducted. In Stage 1, data quality was assessed by comparing the PCP smoking data recorded close to AAA screening episodes with the data collected from participants at the AAA screening session. Inter-rater reliability was analysed using Cohen’s kappa scores. In Stage 2, an audit of longitudinal smoking status was conducted, of a subset of participants potentially misclassified in Stage 1. Background: Screening the adult population for mental disorders is essential for early diagnosis and prompt treatment. The current study aimed to assess adults’ prevalence and predictors of mental health disorders. Methodology: This community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among 1056 adults. After obtaining their written informed consent, trained workers administered the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders Patient Health Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Epi Info software for Windows. Results: Out of 1056 study participants, 121 (11.5%) suffered from any mental health disorder. The most common mental health disorder was depression (5.1%), followed by anxiety (4.6%), somatoform disorder (2.8%), probable alcohol abuse (1.8%), and panic disorder (1.5%). In the logistic regression model, the odds of suffering from any mental health disorder were significantly higher among those having a chronic disease (odds ratio [OR] =1.8 [1.1–2.9]) and currently consuming tobacco (OR = 2.0 [1.2–3.3]), as compared to their counterparts. Conclusion: Around one-tenth of the study population suffered from any mental health disorder, the most common being depression. It is imperative that the general population be made aware of the signs and symptoms of mental health problems. Patients should be encouraged to seek early treatment for their mental health problems.

Introduction Although shisha smoking is banned in Senegal, it has become increasingly popular, especially among youth. Despite the health risks associated with shisha smoking, there are few studies on shisha smoking in West Africa and none in Senegal. Our study assessed the prevalence and factors associated with shisha smoking among students aged 13–15 years in Senegal. Methods We used the 2020 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Senegal data from 2524 students aged 13–15 years. We calculated the weighted prevalence of ever and current (past 30 days) shisha smoking. Multivariable logistic regression analyses identified factors associated with ever and current shisha smoking among students. Results The prevalences of ever and current shisha smoking were 9.8% (95% CI: 7.7–12.3) and 2.2% (95% CI: 1.5–3.1), respectively. Ever shisha smoking was significantly associated with being male (AOR=1.97; 95% CI: 1.33–2.92), current cigarette smoking (AOR=7.54; 95% CI: 2.95–19.29), higher class grade (AOR=2.27; 95% CI:1.10–4.67), more weekly pocket money (AOR=3.29; 95% CI:1.36–7.95), current use of smokeless tobacco (AOR=11.53; 95% CI: 4.98– 26.72), and exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke in public (AOR=1.55; 95% CI: 1.00–2.41). Current shisha smoking was significantly associated with current cigarette smoking (AOR=21.75; 95% CI: 6.08–77.78), more weekly pocket money (AOR=8.91; 95% CI: 1.75–45.40), current use of smokeless tobacco (AOR=8.26; 95% CI: 2.07–33.04), and fathers’ smoking (AOR=3.34; 95% CI: 1.24–8.96). Conclusions One in 10 students aged 13–15 years have ever smoked shisha and 2.2% were currently smoking it, suggesting that shisha smoking is a public health concern in Senegal. Senegal might consider offering students more education on the harms of shisha, both in schools and through comprehensive media campaigns that address all tobacco products.

Abstract Background Carbon nano sol (CNS) can markedly affect the plant growth and development. However, few systematic analyses have been conducted on the underlying regulatory mechanisms in plants, including tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). Results Integrated analyses of phenome, ionome, transcriptome, and metabolome were performed in this study to elucidate the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying the CNS-promoting growth of tobacco plants. We found that 0.3% CNS, facilitating the shoot and root growth of tobacco plants, significantly increased shoot potassium concentrations. Antioxidant, metabolite, and phytohormone profiles showed that 0.3% CNS obviously reduced reactive oxygen species production and increased antioxidant enzyme activity and auxin accumulation. Comparative transcriptomics revealed that the GO and KEGG terms involving responses to oxidative stress, DNA binding, and photosynthesis were highly enriched in response to exogenous CNS application. Differential expression profiling showed that NtNPF7.3/NtNRT1.5, potentially involved in potassium/auxin transport, was significantly upregulated under the 0.3% CNS treatment. High-resolution metabolic fingerprints showed that 141 and 163 metabolites, some of which were proposed as growth regulators, were differentially accumulated in the roots and shoots under the 0.3% CNS treatment, respectively. Conclusions Taken together, this study revealed the physiological and molecular mechanism underlying CNS-mediated growth promotion in tobacco plants, and these findings provide potential support for improving plant growth through the use of CNS.

Abstract Introduction Stroke is a life-threatening condition that causes a major medical burden globally. The currently used methods for the prevention or prediction of stroke have certain limitations. Exposure to tobacco in early life, including smoking during adolescence and maternal smoking during pregnancy, can affect adolescent development and lead to several negative outcomes. However, the association between early-life tobacco exposure and stroke is not known. Methods In this prospective cohort study, for the analyses involving exposure to maternal smoking during pregnancy and age of smoking initiation, we included 304,984 and 342,893 participants, respectively., respectively from the UK Biobank. Cox proportional hazard regression model and subgroup analyses were performed to investigate the association between early-life tobacco exposure and stroke. Mediation analyses were performed to identify the mediating role of biological aging in the association between early tobacco exposure and stroke. Results Compared with participants whose mothers did not smoke during pregnancy, participants whose mothers smoked during pregnancy showed an 11% increased risk of stroke (HR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.05–1.18, P

Abstract Background Sinonasal adenocarcinoma is a rare cancer, encompassing two different entities, the intestinal-type sinonasal adenocarcinoma (ITAC) and the non-intestinal-type sinonasal adenocarcinoma (non-ITAC). Occurrence of ITAC is strongly associated with exposure to hardwood dusts. In countries with predominant exposure to softwood dust the occurrence of sinonasal adenocarcinomas is lower and the relative amount of non-ITACs to ITACs is higher. The molecular mechanisms behind the tumorigenic effects of wood dust remain largely unknown. Methods We carried out whole-genome sequencing of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples of sinonasal adenocarcinomas from ten wood dust-exposed and six non-exposed individuals, with partial tobacco exposure data. Sequences were analyzed for the presence of mutational signatures matching COSMIC database signatures. Driver mutations and CN variant regions were characterized. Results Mutation burden was higher in samples of wood dust-exposed patients (p = 0.016). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage-related mutational signatures were almost exclusively identified in ITAC subtype samples (p = 0.00055). Tobacco smoke mutational signatures were observed in samples of patients with tobacco exposure or missing information, but not in samples from non-exposed patients. A tetraploidy copy number (CN) signature was enriched in ITAC subtype (p = 0.042). CN variation included recurrent gains in COSMIC Cancer Gene Census genes TERT, SDHA, RAC1, ETV1, PCM1, and MYC. Pathogenic variants were observed most frequently in TP53, NF1, CHD2, BRAF, APC, and LRP1B. Driver mutations and copy number gains did not segregate by subtype. Conclusions Our analysis identified distinct mutational characteristics in ITAC and non-ITAC. Mutational signature analysis may eventually become useful for documentation of occupation-related cancer, while the exact mechanisms behind wood dust-driven carcinogenesis remain elusive. The presence of homologous recombination deficiency signatures implies a novel opportunity for treatment, but further studies are needed.

Abstract Background The WHO highlight alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy food, and sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) taxes as one of the most effective policies for preventing and reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases. This umbrella review aimed to identify and summarise evidence from systematic reviews that report the relationship between price and demand or price and disease/death for alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy food, and SSBs. Given the recent recognition as gambling as a public health problem, we also included gambling. Methods The protocol for this umbrella review was pre-registered (PROSPERO CRD42023447429). Seven electronic databases were searched between 2000–2023. Eligible systematic reviews were those published in any country, including adults or children, and which quantitatively examined the relationship between alcohol, tobacco, gambling, unhealthy food, or SSB price/tax and demand (sales/consumption) or disease/death. Two researchers undertook screening, eligibility, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment using the ROBIS tool. Results We identified 50 reviews from 5,185 records, of which 31 reported on unhealthy food or SSBs, nine reported on tobacco, nine on alcohol, and one on multiple outcomes (alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy food, and SSBs). We did not identify any reviews on gambling. Higher prices were consistently associated with lower demand, notwithstanding variation in the size of effect across commodities or populations. Reductions in demand were large enough to be considered meaningful for policy. Conclusions Increases in the price of alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy food, and SSBs are consistently associated with decreases in demand. Moreover, increasing taxes can be expected to increase tax revenue. There may be potential in joining up approaches to taxation across the harm-causing commodities.

OBJECTIVES: Long working hours and overwork are growing public health concerns in the Western-Pacific region. We explored the relationship between working hours and smoking behaviors of Korean workers. METHODS: This study included 284 782 observations (50 508 workers) from four nationwide cohort studies in Korea. Using generalized estimating equations, we estimated the associations of working hours with current smoking status, smoking initiation, and smoking cessation within each cohort. Cohort-specific estimates were combined through random-effect meta-analysis. Effect sizes were presented as odds ratios (OR) and 95 confidence intervals (CI). IntroductionSmokeless tobacco (SLT) has been linked with various oral signs and symptoms, such as oral mucosal lesions and gingival and periodontal effects. However, there is limited research on the prevalence of SLT use and its impact on gingival and periodontal health in the adult population of the Emirates of Sharjah. AimTo assess the prevalence of SLT consumption and its effects on gingival and periodontal health in the adult population of the Emirates of Sharjah. MethodsThe study evaluated 171 dentate patients aged 18–77 years who use SLT or are nonsmokers. Data were collected through a questionnaire on SLT use and periodontal health assessed using plaque index, gingival index (GI), attachment score, and gingival recession (GR). Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 27.0 version. ResultsAmong 390 screened participants, 28 subjects (21 males and 7 females) were SLT users with prevalence of 7.18%. No significant differences were found in plaque index, GI, or periodontal pocket depth. However, SLT users had significantly higher clinical attachment loss scores (mean 4.01 mm, SD 0.35) compared to non-users (mean 1.49 mm, SD 1.12). Significant differences were also observed in GR. ConclusionsThis study provides insights into the prevalence and impact of SLT use on periodontal and gingival health in UAE adults. SLT usage is associated with a higher risk of periodontitis and gingivitis, indicating the need for awareness and intervention. Further research is required to validate results and consider confounding factors.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the results of the global surveys among youth 13–15 years old on tobacco consumption, conducted in 2004, 2015, 2021 in Khabarovsk, Novosibirsk, Cheboksary, Moscow, Pskov and the Russian Federation. The dynamics and trends in consumption of tobacco, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) are analyzed. Materials and methods. The surveys used representative samples formed on the basis of all public schools. In 2004, 2015 and 2021 regional sampling included two stages. In 2021 national sampling included three stages: the selection of municipalities, schools and classes. All students of the selected classes were asked. The surveys used the same questionnaire. The total number of respondents – 38 345, the overall response rate – more than 90%. Results. In the Russian Federation, in 2004–2021 among students aged 13–15, the prevalence of tobacco consumption decreased from 27.3 to 11.0%, passive smoking in homes from 76.4 to 23.1%, in closed public places from 89.4 to 23.7%. The consumption of ENDS and HTPs increased up to 16.7 and 3.5% respectively. Similar trends in consumption of products, passive smoking were identified in all the cities. Conclusion. The adoption in 2013 of the Federal Law "On protecting the health of citizens from the effects of second hand tobacco smoke, the consequences of tobacco consumption or the consumption of nicotine-containing products" had a significant impact on tobacco use by adolescents and reduced the prevalence of tobacco consumption and passive smoking among them by 3 times.

NaHCO3 accelerates the aging of tobacco leaves; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms have not been elucidated. This study aimed to explore the mechanism of NaHCO3 in the promotion of tobacco leaf maturation using transcriptome analysis. Leaves on plants or detached leaves of the tobacco variety, Honghua Dajinyuan, were sprayed with or without 1% NaHCO3. The leaf yellowing was observed, the pigment content and enzyme activities were determined and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed. Spraying NaHCO3 onto detached leaves was found to promote leaf yellowing. Pigment content, catalase activity, and superoxide dismutase activity significantly decreased, whereas peroxidase activity and malondialdehyde content significantly increased. RNA-seq demonstrated that spraying with NaHCO3 upregulated genes associated with cysteine and methionine metabolism; alpha-linolenic acid metabolism; and phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis and downregulated genes related to photosynthesis and carotenoid biosynthesis. Genes correlated with autophagy-other, valine, leucine, and isoleucine degradation, and the MAPK signaling pathway were upregulated while those correlated with DNA replication, phenylalanine, and tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis were downregulated in detached leaves sprayed with NaHCO3 compared with the plant leaves sprayed with NaHCO3. Overall, this study is the first to elucidate the molecular and metabolic mechanisms of NaHCO3 in the promotion of tobacco leaf maturation.

Long-term continuous cropping of tobacco causes dysbiosis of soil microbial communities, the imbalance of soil nutrients, and the increase of pathogenic bacteria, which will slow the growth and development of tobacco plants, reduce the production quality, and cause significant losses to tobacco production and tobacco farmers. The application of Potassium fulvic acid can not only provide nutrients, but also inhibit the propagation of pathogens in soil along with raising the amount of organic matter in the soil, which is an effective way to improve soil health. In this experiment, Tobacco variety SNT60 was used as the test material, and 6 treatments were set up by pot test, they were: no fertilisation control group (CK), tobacco special fertiliser (NPK), 3.45 g/kg of potassium fulvic acid fertiliser (T1), 4.65 g/kg of potassium fulvic acid fertiliser (T2), 5.85 g/kg of potassium fulvic acid fertiliser (T3), 7.05 g/kg of potassium fulvic acid fertiliser (T4), Ten replications were set up for each treatment and the soil and fertiliser were mixed and potted before transplanting, 70% as basal fertiliser and 30% as supplementary fertiliser. We also analyzed soil properties, soil microorganisms and agronomic traits of tobacco plants in different treatments to provide reference for mitigating tobacco succession barrier. The test results are as follows: 4.65 g/kg of potassium fulvic acid fertiliser (T2) treatment was the best, soil organic matter, quick nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, pH, soil catalase, soil sucrase, and soil urease content, compared to CK control, increased by 22.04%, 43.12%, 96.21%, 381.79%, 25.43%, 91.69%, 262.07% and 93.16%. In terms of microbial community, application of potassium fulvic acid fertiliser significantly increased the relative abundance of Ascomycetes, Chlorobacterium, Bacillus, Proteobacteria and Tephritobacterium in the soil. Meanwhile, 4.65 g/kg of potassium fulvic acid fertiliser (T2) promoted the growth of tobacco plants, improved leaf photosynthetic capacity, and enhanced plant disease resistance. This experiment provides practical measures to improve the microbial community of tobacco continuous cropping soils and to reduce the incidence of diseases.

Across West Virginia, tobacco use continues to be a significant public health challenge. Specifically, tobacco use is linked to high poverty across the state and disproportionately affects African Americans. A faith-based tobacco prevention network was formed to address these concerns and increase education and cessation. The West Virginia African American Tobacco Prevention Network (WVAATPN) was formed in 2021 and since then has expanded its reach across the state, involving 22 congregations. The Network’s model includes annual training for lay leaders on various tobacco-related topics, tailored educational curriculum for congregations, and collaboration with national experts to enhance program efficacy. The Network has run educational and cessation workshops and promoted events such as No Menthol Sunday. Workshops have yielded positive outcomes among participants, including increased awareness of tobacco marketing tactics, higher cessation rates, and improved understanding of the health impacts of tobacco. The WVAATPN continues to expand its reach and effectiveness by advocating for policy change, enhancing community engagement, and fostering partnerships to combat tobacco-related disparities in West Virginia’s African American communities.

Plant growth, crop yield, and pest and disease control are enhanced by PGPR (Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria), which are beneficial microorganisms found in a close symbiosis with plant roots. Phytohormones are secreted, nutrient uptake is improved, and soil properties along with the microbiological environment are regulated by these microorganisms, making them a significant focus in agricultural research. In this study, the efficient PGPR strain T1 was isolated and screened from tobacco inter-root soil, and identified and confirmed by ITS sequencing technology. Tobacco growth indicators and soil property changes were observed and recorded through potting experiments. The activities of key enzymes (e.g., sucrase, catalase, urease) in soil were further determined. High-throughput sequencing technology was utilized to sequence the soil microbial community, and combined with macro-genomics analysis, the effects of T1 strain on soil microbial diversity and metabolic pathways were explored. Following the application of T1, significant improvements were observed in the height, leaf length, and width of tobacco plants. Furthermore, the physical and chemical properties of the soil were notably enhanced, including a 26.26% increase in phosphorus availability. Additionally, the activities of key soil enzymes such as sucrase, catalase, and urease were significantly increased, indicating improved soil health and fertility. Comprehensive joint microbiomics and macrogenomics analyses revealed a substantial rise in the populations of beneficial soil microorganisms and an enhancement in metabolic pathways, including amino acid metabolism, synthesis, and production of secondary metabolites. These increase in beneficial microorganisms and the enhancement of their metabolic functions are crucial for plant growth and soil fertility. This study provides valuable references for the development of innovative microbial fertilizers and offers programs for the sustainable development of modern agriculture.

PurposeTobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in France, with 75,000 deaths each year. France aims to reduce smoking and achieve a smoke-free generation by 2032. However, recent tobacco industry innovations which mainly target young people, could undermine this goal. The main objective of this study is to assess the knowledge and consumption patterns of the “puff” among French adolescents in 2022.MethodsA cross-sectional study using a structured online survey on a representative sample of 400 adolescents aged 13 to 16 years was conducted from July 4th to 20th, 2022.ResultsAround 66% of adolescents reported having heard of the puff”, and one in ten having tried it. Slightly fewer of them have tried cigarettes; 89.6% of experimenters reported that it allowed them to explore unique flavors, 81.9% found it fun to play with the puff-cloud, and 94.5% of regular consumers considered it a stylish or cool product. 76% of adolescents believe that the puff is dangerous to their health, 71.6% describe it as a polluting device, and 62.8% think it’s a gadget.ConclusionThe “puff” is widely known by French adolescents and more commonly used than cigarettes, due, in part, to marketing specifically designed to target youth. That is why it could represent a threat to the smoke-free generation objectives. Public health policy could be informed by the ecological awareness of adolescents as a new lever of counter-influence to prevent this kind of consumption, as did ACT with the #stopcigarettespollution prevention campaign.

IntroductionOn January 2, 2020, the FDA announced a policy focused in part on prioritizing enforcement of flavored (other than tobacco- or menthol-flavored) cartridge-based electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) without premarket authorization.MethodsWe used a query to identify Reddit conversations relevant to the policy from January 2 to May 6, 2020. Our sample included 576 posts (46 posts and 530 accompanying comments). Two analysts coded posts for mentions of use behaviors (e.g., switching, quitting), purchasing behaviors (e.g., purchasing from retailer new to the user), and flavored products. We summarized frequencies of coded data and provided illustrative quotes.ResultsOnly 21.0% (121/576) of posts mentioned use behavior. Switching behavior was the most common use behavior mentioned (50.4%, 61/121). Most switching behavior posts focused on ENDS-related switching (91.8%, 56/61). The most common ENDS-related switching behaviors mentioned were switching to an open tank (45.9%, 28/61) or device with refillable pods/cartridges (44.3%, 27/61); 8.2% (5/61) mentioned switching to disposables. Just 15.5% (89/576) of posts mentioned purchasing behavior, with the most common being purchasing from a retailer new to the user (32.6%, 29/89). Only 6.8% (39/576) of posts mentioned specific flavors.ConclusionReddit posts about the policy commonly discussed switching to non-cartridge-based ENDS products, such as open tank systems or disposable devices, and purchasing products from different online sources that were still selling these products. Findings suggest that publicly available Reddit data can complement data from traditional sources (e.g., surveys, sales) to understand potential unintended consequences associated with policies by exploring the public’s reactions.

Introduction and purpose Oral cancer belongs to a heterogeneous group of head and neck cancers. In many cases, it is detected at an advanced stage, which translates into a relatively high mortality rate among patients. For this reason, the identification of risk factors promoting carcinogenesis is of great importance in terms of prevention. The purpose of our study is to demonstrate the relationship between the type of diet consumed and the intake of stimulants and the risk of developing oral cancer. State of knowledge This article is an overview of selected dietary ingredients and stimulants - tobacco, alcohol and betel, presenting their possible effects on the oral area. We have presented both dietary products known for their harmfulness and those with health-promoting effects. Material and method In our work, we focused on analyzing medical literature available on PubMed and Google Scholar. The sources we have chosen are based on studies conducted in epidemiology, biochemistry and oncology. Summary Dietary habits and ingested stimulants have a direct impact on the development of oral cancer. Depending on the content of various components, the diet may exhibit protective properties or promote carcinogenesis. On the other hand, chronic habitual use of certain substances has been found to be a strong factor in increasing the risk of oral malignancies. Therefore, efforts should be made to raise public awareness of the potential consequences of pro-inflammatory diets and stimulants intake.

Introduction: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people, and AI/AN people have the highest rate of smoking of any racial or ethnic group in the US. There is limited research to inform culturally-relevant strategies for lung cancer prevention inclusive of lung cancer screening (LCS). The objective of this study was to understand determinants of LCS and tobacco cessation care in at-risk urban-dwelling AI/ANs. Materials and Methods: This was a mixed-methods community-based participatory research study including complimentary qualitative discussions and surveys conducted in Seattle, Washington, USA from 2022 to 2023. The study measures and analytic approach integrated the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research and Tribal Critical Race Theory and qualitative transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Participants were self-identified AI/AN people who were age ≥ 40 and had ≥ 10-year history of commercial cigarette smoking. Results: Forty-five participants completed surveys and participated in discussions, 48% were female, the median age was 58 and median smoking history was 24 pack-years of commercial cigarette use. Themes revealed prominent barriers to LCS care including access, costs, awareness, and fear. Many reported previous negative and discriminatory encounters within and outside the health system which may also serve as barriers. Most participants endorsed cancer screening and increased education, recommending Indigenous-centered, delivered, and tailored programs, as well barrier-directed support. Conclusions: In a broad sample of at-risk urban-dwelling AI/AN people, our findings suggest enthusiasm for preventive care but several complex barriers. Participants endorsed culturally-tailored programs which could provide relevant education and address barriers.

Background and objectives: Secondhand tobacco smoke is associated with worsening asthma symptoms among children. However, the relationship between secondhand marijuana smoke and asthma symptoms among youth has not been examined. This study compares the prevalence of secondhand tobacco and marijuana smoke exposure, overall and by asthma status, among middle and high school students. Methods: The study assessed participants of the 2019–2020 California Student Tobacco Survey: a large, cross-sectional random sample of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders (N = 158,937). Descriptive analyses examined exposure to combustible tobacco and marijuana secondhand smoke by students’ asthma status and sociodemographic characteristics. Results: More students with asthma were exposed to combustible tobacco secondhand smoke (13.4 %) and marijuana secondhand smoke (12.0 %) than students without asthma (10.9 % and 9.3 %, respectively). The prevalence of secondhand marijuana smoke exposure was higher among 12th grade students (12.2 %) while the prevalence of secondhand tobacco smoke exposure was higher among 8th grade students (13.4 %) and those who lived in rural locations (15.4 %). Conclusions: California students are exposed to marijuana secondhand smoke at similar proportions to combustible tobacco secondhand smoke and more students with asthma are exposed to marijuana secondhand smoke. These results expand the public health issue of secondhand smoke exposure among children with asthma by highlighting the need to examine marijuana secondhand smoke. Given the rapid shift in marijuana laws across the US, exposure to secondhand marijuana smoke is likely to increase. Therefore, vulnerable populations, such as children with asthma, should be prioritized for interventions that aim to alleviate secondhand marijuana exposure.

Introduction: Both electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) and social media use among youth are public health concerns. While the health impacts of extensive social media use and frequent use of e-cigarettes have been discussed independently in the literature, little is known about the relationship between the two. This study aims to examine the potential association between extensive social media use and the frequency of current, e-cigarette use among United States (US) youth. Methods: Data from the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) were analyzed. The sample included 23,655 middle and high school students aged 9–18 years. Frequency of current e-cigarette use was categorized based on past-30 day use (i.e., never/former, 1–9 days, 10–29 days, or 30 days). Social media use was dichotomized into less than 4 hours daily and 4+ hours daily (i.e., extensive use). Multivariable multinomial logistic regression estimated the relationship between social media use and e-cigarette use frequency. Results: Over one-third (35.8 %) of youth used social media extensively and 8.6 % reported current use of e-cigarettes. Extensive social media use was associated with daily e-cigarette use (OR: 1.94, 95 % CI: 1.48–2.56) but not with other use categories. Older age, female sex, lower grades, current other tobacco use, and family tobacco use were also associated with daily e-cigarette use. Conclusions: Extensive social media use is associated with daily e-cigarette use among US youth. Public health interventions should consider the influence of social media on tobacco use behaviors and tailor prevention strategies to address this potential modifiable risk factor.

Smoking during pregnancy is detrimental to the foetus and the mother, but quitting smoking can be challenging for pregnant women. The nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR), the ratio between 3-hydroxycotinine and cotinine, indicates the rate of nicotine metabolism and is associated with smoking behaviours and cessation success in the general population. Our goal was to establish what is currently known about the rate of nicotine metabolism during pregnancy. A search was conducted from inception to January 2024 using PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Medline. Inclusion criteria encompassed pregnant women actively using any tobacco or nicotine-containing products for whom cotinine and 3-hydroxycotinine levels were assessed in maternal saliva, blood, or urine samples. Exclusion criteria comprised non-English articles, passive exposure to smoking, and absence of cotinine and 3-hydroxycotinine measurements. In half of the studies, more than 75% of participants were White. Four studies demonstrated that NMR (i.e. rate of nicotine metabolism) increased during pregnancy. Two studies found opioid use can increase NMR, and higher NMR correlated with greater nicotine dependence during pregnancy. One study found that higher NMR was associated with heavy cigarette use during pregnancy. Similarly, one study revealed pregnant women with higher NMR are less likely to quit smoking. However, one study linked lower NMR to lower birth weight, particularly among African-American populations compared to White populations. NMR tends to increase during pregnancy, complicating smoking cessation. Although race is an important determinant of NMR, the limited range of ethnic backgrounds highlights a need for further research in diverse populations.

ABSTRACT Nicotine is a major alkaloid in tobacco plants and an addictive component of tobacco products. Some bacteria grow on tobacco plants and have evolved the ability to metabolize nicotine. As part of our microbiology teaching lab, we used minimal media with nicotine as the sole carbon source to isolate nicotine-degrading bacteria from tobacco leaves and commercial tobacco products. Students then identified these bacteria using 16S rRNA sequencing and biochemical assays and assessed their ability to catabolize nicotine using UV spectroscopy. Students were able to isolate and identify 14 distinct genera that can metabolize nicotine. This modification of the commonly used unknown project gave students firsthand experience using selective media, and students got the opportunity to work with largely uncharacterized microbes with a real-world connection to public health, which increased student engagement. Students had the opportunity to think critically about why nicotine-degrading microorganisms associate with tobacco plants, why there are different bacteria that use the same specialized metabolism, and how these organisms are isolated from other bacteria using selective media.

IntroductionTobacco root-knot nematode (TRKN) disease is a soil-borne disease that presents a major hazard to the cultivation of tobacco, causing significant reduction in crop quality and yield, and affecting soil microbial diversity and metabolites. However, differences in rhizosphere soil microbial communities and metabolites between healthy tobacco soils and tobacco soils with varying degrees of TRKN infection remain unclear.MethodsIn this study, diseased rhizosphere soils of tobacco infected with different degrees of TRKN [severally diseased (DH) soils, moderately diseased (DM) soils, and mildly diseased (DL) soils] and healthy (H) rhizosphere soils were collected. Here, we combined microbiology with metabolomics to investigate changes in rhizosphere microbial communities and metabolism in healthy and TRKN-infected tobacco using high-throughput sequencing and LC-MS/MS platforms.ResultsThe results showed that the Chao1 and Shannon indices of bacterial communities in moderately and mildly diseased soils were significantly higher than healthy soils. The Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Ascomycota, Burkholderia, Bradyrhizobium and Dyella were enriched in the rhizosphere soil of healthy tobacco. Basidiomycota, Agaricales, Pseudeurotiaceae and Ralstonia were enriched in severally diseased soils. Besides, healthy soils exhibited a relatively complex and interconnected network of bacterial molecular ecologies, while in severally and moderately diseased soils the fungal molecular networks are relatively complex. Redundancy analysis showed that total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, available phosphorus, significantly affected the changes in microbial communities. In addition, metabolomics results indicated that rhizosphere soil metabolites were significantly altered after tobacco plants were infected with TRKNs. The relative abundance of organic acids was higher in severally diseased soils. Spearman’s analyses showed that oleic acid, C16 sphinganine, 16-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid, D-erythro-3-methylmalate were positively correlated with Basidiomycota, Agaricales, Ralstonia.DiscussionIn conclusion, this study revealed the relationship between different levels of TRKN invasion of tobacco root systems with bacteria, fungi, metabolites and soil environmental factors, and provides a theoretical basis for the biological control of TRKN disease.

Introduction and Purpose: More and more alternatives to traditional smoking are available on shop shelves. Are other ways of using nicotine healthier for us? What are the advantages and disadvantages? The aim of this article is to trace the health effects of new, popular alternatives to the traditional cigarette. Materials and methods: A literature search was conducted using the medical databases PubMed and Google Scholar. Articles were retrieved in English, employing the key words: “Iqos”, “Glo”, „ e-cigarette” and „ tobacco” appropriate configurations. Conclusions: Modern tobacco devices, such as IQOS and Glo, emit significantly less harmful substances than traditional cigarettes. In particular, emissions of carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are significantly lower. Nevertheless, nicotine remains the main ingredient in these products, with serious health risks. Regular use of nicotine can lead to addiction, cardiovascular disease and problems with the nervous system and oral cavity. Inhaling aerosol from tobacco devices such as IQOS, Glo and disposable e-cigarettes can lead to damage to lung cells and other respiratory health problems. Despite the lower risks, the use of alternative smoking methods is still harmful to our health.

IntroductionSmokers frequently display respiratory symptoms despite the fact that their pulmonary function tests (PFTs) can be normal. Quantitative lung ventilation single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT/CT) can provide a quantification of lung ventilatory homogeneity and could prove useful as an early marker of airway disease in smokers. We measured the effects of smoking on regional ventilation distribution in subjects with normal lung function and evaluated whether ventilation distribution in these subjects is related to lung function tests results and clinical symptoms.MethodsSubjects without any history of respiratory disease were prospectively recruited and separated in two groups: active smokers (AS: ≥10 cigarettes/day and history of ≥15 pack-years) and never smokers (NS: lifetime exposure of 40%, (AUC-CV40%) was used as the measure of ventilation heterogeneity.Results30 subjects were recruited (15 per group). Subjects in the AS group displayed higher dyspnea levels (1 [1–2] vs. 0 [0–1] units on mMRC scale, p < 0.001). AUC- CV40% was significantly higher in the AS group (0.386 ± 0.106 vs. 0.293 ± 0.069, p = 0.004). AUC-CV40% was significantly correlated to FEV1 (rho = −0.47, p = 0.009), DLCO (rho = −0.49, p = 0.006), CAT score (rho = 0.55, p = 0.002) and mMRC score (rho = 0.54, p = 0.002). Subjects with mMRC >0 had higher AUC-CV40% values than those without dyspnea (0.289 ± 0.071 vs. 0.378 ± 0.102, p = 0.006), while FEV1 and DLCO were not different between those groups. ROC analyses showed that the AUC for AUC-CV40% in identifying subjects with mMRC score >0 was 0.78 (95%CI 0.61–0.95, p = 0.009), which was significantly higher than that of FEV1 and DLCO.DiscussionIn smokers with normal lung function, ventilatory inhomogeneities can be quantified using SPECT/CT. AUC-CV40% values are related to lung function decline and to respiratory symptomatology, suggesting a potential role for this marker in the evaluation of symptomatic smokers.

Introduction: The rewarding effects of drugs of abuse are associated with the dopaminergic system in the limbic circuitry. Nicotine exposure during adolescence is linked to increased use of drugs of abuse with nicotine and methamphetamine (METH) commonly used together. Nicotine acts on neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) systems, critical for reward processing and drug reinforcement, while METH leads to a higher dopamine (DA) efflux in brain reward regions. A human single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the 3′-untranslated region (UTR) of the α6 nicotinic receptor subunit gene (CHRNA6, rs2304297), has been linked with tobacco/nicotine and general substance use during adolescence. Using CRISPR-Cas9 genomic engineering, our lab recapitulated the CHRNA6 3′UTRC123G SNP, generating α6CC and α6GG allele carriers in Sprague Dawley rats. We hypothesized the CHRNA6 3′UTRC123G SNP would sex- and genotype-dependently enhance nicotine-induced METH self-administration as well as nicotine-induced DA overflow in the nucleus accumbens shell of adolescent α6GG and α6CC carriers.Methods: Adolescent male and female rats underwent a 4-day sub-chronic, low-dose (0.03 mg/kg/0.1 mL, x2) nicotine pretreatment paradigm to assess intravenous METH (0.02 mg/kg/0.1 mL) self-administration as well as nicotine- and METH (0.02 mg/kg/0.1 mL)-induced DA overflow in the nucleus accumbens shell (NAcS) using in vivo microdialysis coupled with high-performance liquid-chromatography-electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD).Results: Nicotine pretreatment sex- and genotype-dependently enhanced subsequent METH self-administration in adolescent CHRNA6 3′UTRC123G SNP rats. Further nicotine and METH-induced DA overflow is observed in α6CC females as compared to α6GG females, with METH-induced DA overflow enhanced in α6GG males when compared to α6CC males.Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that the CHRNA6 3′-UTRC123G SNP can sex- and genotype-dependently impact adolescent nicotine-induced effects on METH self-administration and stimulant-induced DA overflow in reward regions of the brain.

ABSTRACT Over-application of chemical fertilizers and continuous cropping obstacles seriously restrict the sustainable development of tobacco production. Localized fertilization of beneficial microbes has potential advantages in achieving higher productivity, but the underlying biological mechanisms of interactions between rhizospheric microorganisms and the related metabolic cycle remain poorly characterized. Here, an integrative analysis of microbiomes with non-targeted metabolomics was performed on 30 soil samples of rhizosphere, root surrounding, and bulk soils from flue‐cured tobacco under continuous and non-continuous monocropping systems. The analysis was conducted using UPLC-MS/MS platforms and high-throughput amplicon sequencing targeting the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal ITS gene. The microbial inoculant consisted of Bacillus subtilis, B. velezensis, and B. licheniformis at the ratio of 1:1:1 in effective microbial counts, improved the cured leaf yield and disease resistance of tobacco, and enhanced nicotine and nitrogen contents of tobacco leaves. The bacterial taxa Rhizobium, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonadaceae, and Burkholderiaceae of the phylum Proteobacteria accumulated in high relative abundance and were identified as biomarkers following the application of the microbial inoculant. Under continuous monocropping, metabolomics demonstrated that the application of the microbial inoculant significantly affected the soil metabolite spectrum, and the differential metabolites were significantly enriched to the synthesis and degradation of nicotine (nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism and biosynthesis of alkaloids derived from nicotinic acid). In addition, microbes were closely related to the accumulation of metabolites through correlation analysis. The interactions between plant roots and rhizospheric microorganisms provide valuable information for understanding how these beneficial microbes affect complex biological processes and the adaption capacity of plants to environments.IMPORTANCEThis study elaborated on how the microbial fertilizer significantly changed overall community structures and metabolite spectrum of rhizospheric microbes, which provide insights into the process of rhizosphere microbial remolding in response to continuous monocropping. we verified the hypothesis that the application of the microbial inoculant in continuous cropping would lead to the selection of distinct microbiota communities by establishing models to correlate biomarkers. Through correlation analysis of the microbiome and metabolome, we proved that rhizospheric microbes were closely related to the accumulation of metabolites, including the synthesis and degradation of nicotine. The interactions between plant roots and rhizospheric microorganisms provide valuable information for understanding how these beneficial microbes affect complex biological processes and the adaption capacity of plants to environments.
