Abstract Liquid xenon time projection chambers are promising detectors to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0 $$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β ), due to their response uniformity, monolithic sensitive volume, scalability to large target masses, and suitability for extremely low background operations. The nEXO collaboration has designed a tonne-scale time projection chamber that aims to search for 0 $$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β of $$^{136}$$ 136 Xe with projected half-life sensitivity of $$1.35\times 10^{28}$$ 1.35 × 10 28 yr. To reach this sensitivity, the design goal for nEXO is $$\le $$ ≤ 1% energy resolution at the decay Q-value ( $$2458.07\pm 0.31$$ 2458.07 ± 0.31 keV). Reaching this resolution requires the efficient collection of both the ionization and scintillation produced in the detector. The nEXO design employs Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) to detect the vacuum ultra-violet, 175 nm scintillation light of liquid xenon. This paper reports on the characterization of the newest vacuum ultra-violet sensitive Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUVHD3 SiPMs specifically designed for nEXO, as well as new measurements on new test samples of previously characterised Hamamatsu VUV4 Multi Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs). Various SiPM and MPPC parameters, such as dark noise, gain, direct crosstalk, correlated avalanches and photon detection efficiency were measured as a function of the applied over voltage and wavelength at liquid xenon temperature (163 K). The results from this study are used to provide updated estimates of the achievable energy resolution at the decay Q-value for the nEXO design.

Abstract High brightness, high charge electron beams are critical for a number of advanced accelerator applications. The initial emittance of the electron beam, which is determined by the mean transverse energy (MTE) and laser spot size, is one of the most important parameters determining the beam quality. The bialkali photocathodes illuminated by a visible laser have the advantages of high quantum efficiency (QE) and low MTE. Furthermore, Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) guns can operate in the continuous wave (CW) mode at high accelerating gradients, e.g. with significant reduction of the laser spot size at the photocathode. Combining the bialkali photocathode with the SRF gun enables generation of high charge, high brightness, and possibly high average current electron beams. However, integrating the high QE semiconductor photocathode into the SRF guns has been challenging. In this article, we report on the development of bialkali photocathodes for successful operation in the SRF gun with months-long lifetime while delivering CW beams with nano-coulomb charge per bunch. This achievement opens a new era for high charge, high brightness CW electron beams.

Cold drawing process is one of the most used metals forming processes in industries for forming seamless tubes. This process of plastic deformation of metals occurs below the recrystallization temperature and is generally performed at room temperature. When metal is cold worked, upon the release of forming force, the springback occurs. In this paper, the springback effect of the seamless tube that has undergone cold drawing is studied for three different reduction ratios viz.10-15 %,15-20 %, and 20-25 % having the aim to reduce it. Experiments are conducted under different reduction ratios with working conditions of die semi angles of 10 and 15 degrees, die land width of 5 mm and 10 mm as well as drawing speed of 4, 6, and 8 m/min for C-45 tube material. Optimum reduction ratio is finalized using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software of data analysis using statistical tests like Kruskal-Wallis, ANOVA, Post-hoc, etc. Metallurgical analysis through microstructural investigation, XRD and mechanical testing via cold draw load, and hardness testing for different reduction ratios are also studied for validation purposes. The results of this research show that 10-15 % reduction ratio yields the minimum springback. This can be used to help designing tools in the metal forming industry to minimize springback and improve the quality of the product.

Alkali antimonides have a long history as visible-light-sensitive photocathodes. This work focuses on the process of fabrication of the bi-alkali photocathodes, K2CsSb. In-situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction and photoresponse measurements were used to monitor phase evolution during sequential photocathode growth mode on Si(100) substrates. The amorphous-to-crystalline transition for the initial antimony layer was observed at a film thickness of 40 Å . The antimony crystalline structure dissolved upon potassium deposition, eventually recrystallizing upon further deposition into K-Sb crystalline modifications. This transition, as well as the conversion of potassium antimonide to K2CsSb upon cesium deposition, is correlated with changes in the quantum efficiency.

Alkali-antimonide photocathodes were grown on Si(100) and studied by means of XPS and UHV-AFM to validate the growth procedure and morphology of this material. The elements were evaporated sequentially at elevated substrate temperatures (first Sb, second K, third Cs). The generated intermediate K-Sb compound itself is a photocathode and the composition of K2.4Sb is close to the favored K3Sb stoichiometry. After cesium deposition, the surface layer is cesium enriched. The determined rms roughness of 25 nm results in a roughness domination of the emittance in the photoinjector already above 3 MV/m.

Two K_{2}CsSb photocathodes were manufactured at Brookhaven National Lab and delivered to Jefferson Lab within a compact vacuum apparatus at pressure ∼10^{-11} Torr. These photocathodes were evaluated using a dc high voltage photogun biased at voltages up to 200 kV, and illuminated with laser light at wavelengths 440 or 532 nm, to generate dc electron beams at currents up to 20 mA. Some conditions produced exceptionally large photocathode charge lifetimes, without measurable quantum efficiency decay, even from the center of the photocathode where operation using GaAs photocathodes is precluded due to ion bombardment. Under other conditions the charge lifetime was poor due to extensive ion bombardment under severely degraded vacuum conditions, and as a result of localized heating via the laser beam. Following beam delivery, the photocathodes were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope to determine surface morphology.

We report the results of theoretical and experimental studies on passive spatiotemporal shaping of cw mode-locked picosecond laser pulses for driving the photocathode of a high-brightness, high-current energy recovery linear accelerator. The temporal pulse shape is modified using birefringent crystals, while a refractive optical system is used to generate a flattop spatial beam profile. An optical transport system is designed and implemented to deliver the flattop pulse onto a photocathode sited 9 m away from the shapers. The alignment tolerances on the beam shaper and the temporal pulse stacker have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results agree well with theoretical simulations.

We present the results of our investigation of lead as a suitable photocathode material for superconducting rf injectors. Quantum efficiencies (QE) have been measured for a range of incident photon energies and compared to predictions from the three-step model of photoemission. A variety of cathode preparation methods have been used, including various lead plating techniques on a niobium substrate. The effects of operating at ambient and cryogenic temperatures and different vacuum levels on the cathode QE have also been studied.

Background: Despite the University of California San Francisco, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and the Food and Drug Administration having approved the use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in arresting dentinal caries, literature available on its systemic absorption is limited. Aim: This study aimed to assess any systemic absorption of fluoride ion following the topical application of SDF in young children. Materials and Methods: Children aged between 3 and 6 years who were diagnosed with severe early childhood caries and required rehabilitation were recruited for the study. Before the onset of treatment for the arrest and control of caries, a baseline urine sample as a control was collected from the patient. In accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and AAPD guidelines, SDF was topically applied on a minimum of five carious teeth, following which additional urine samples were collected after 2 h and after 24 h, respectively, of application of SDF. The urine samples were stored at −20°C, and the estimation of fluoride ion concentrations in urine was then ascertained using a fluoride ion selective electrode. Results: The results revealed that the fluoride concentration in urine before application of SDF was 0.66 mg/L ± 0.25 mg/L, and following 2 h of application, it was 1.13 mg/L ± 0.23. However, 24 h postapplication, the urinary fluoride concentration was reduced to 0.63 mg/L ± 0.20, which is close to the baseline value of the control sample. Conclusion: There was no significant systemic absorption of fluoride following the application of SDF, and it could be adopted as an effective and safe agent in the armamentarium for managing caries in young children.

Kounis syndrome (KS) refers to acute coronary syndrome secondary to a hypersensitivity reaction as a result of exposure to various allergens. Multiple bee stings as a cause of KS is rarely reported in the literature. Its diagnosis in allergic reactions is of utmost importance, as it leads to an entirely different line of management. We report a series of six cases who presented with the diagnosis of KS due to multiple bee stings.

Background: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is rarely encountered as a primary cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). There is a paucity of studies involving SCAD, especially in the Indian population. Aims: We aim to study the clinical and angiographic characteristics and in-hospital outcomes of ACS patients whose angiogram incidentally shows SCAD as the cause of ACS and the management strategies opted. Methods: This is a prospective and retrospective observational study. All coronary angiograms of patients with ACS, either ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) or unstable angina non-STEMI, underwent within 72 h of admission, were analyzed and those patients with Saw classification Type I SCAD were included in the study. Clinical and angiographic characteristics, in-hospital outcomes, and management strategies of patients with SCAD were recorded. Results: Of the total 70 cases with SCAD included in the study, 66 (94.28%) were male. Smoking was the most common risk factor seen in 22 (31.4%) cases. STEMI was the most common presentation seen in 44 (62.8%) subjects. Single-vessel involvement was seen in 67 (95.7%) patients. Significant stenosis, i. e., >70% luminal narrowing was seen in 40 (57.1%) patients. Root cause analysis (RCA) is the most common artery to be involved with 35 (50%) cases. Majority of the cases, i.e., 60 (85.7%) cases had thrombolysis in myocardial infarction 3 flow. The majority was managed conservatively. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was done successfully in 18.5% of patients. Conclusion: Indian subjects, as observed in this study, differ significantly in their profile compared to the Western population. Indian subjects are predominantly middle-aged males with a significant proportion having traditional risk factors, and they tolerate thrombolysis better, success rates of PTCA are much higher, RCA is the most commonly involved artery as opposed to left anterior descending in Western population and more than half of the patients have atherosclerotic disease involving other arteries.

The wound healing efficacy of IH-WH4 and HERBERIN was evaluated in diabetic and burn wound subjects. Histopathological studies revealed that administration of these two products hastened the formation of granulation tissue alongwith angiogenesis and fibroplasia.

Lead (Pb2+), a ubiquitously present heavy metal toxin, has various detrimental effects on memory and cognition. However, the molecular processes affected by Pb2+ causing structural and functional anomalies are still unclear. To explore this, we employed behavioral and proteomic approaches using rat pups exposed to lead acetate through maternal lactation from postnatal day 0 (P0) until weaning. Behavioral results from three-month-old rats clearly emphasized the early life Pb2+ exposure induced impairments in spatial cognition. Further, proteomic analysis of synaptosomal fractions revealed differential alteration of 289 proteins, which shows functional significance in elucidating Pb2+ induced physiological changes. Focusing on the association of Small Ubiquitin-like MOdifier (SUMO), a post-translational modification, with Pb2+ induced cognitive abnormalities, we identified 45 key SUMO target proteins. The significant downregulation of SUMO target proteins such as metabotropic glutamate receptor 3 (GRM3), glutamate receptor isoforms 2 and 3 (GRIA 2 and GRIA3) and flotilin-1 (FLOT1) indicates SUMOylation at the synapses could contribute to and drive Pb2+ induced physiological imbalance. These findings identify SUMOylation as a vital protein modifier with potential roles in hippocampal memory consolidation and regulation of cognition. Regional-scale air quality models are being used for studying the sources, composition, transport, transformation, and deposition of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The availability of decadal air quality simulations provides a unique opportunity to explore sophisticated model evaluation techniques rather than relying solely on traditional operational evaluations. In this study, we propose a new approach for process-based model evaluation of speciated PM2.5 using improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (improved CEEMDAN) to assess how well version 5.0.2 of the coupled Weather Research and Forecasting model–Community Multiscale Air Quality model (WRF-CMAQ) simulates the time-dependent long-term trend and cyclical variations in daily average PM2.5 and its species, including sulfate (SO4), nitrate (NO3), ammonium (NH4), chloride (Cl), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC). The utility of the proposed approach for model evaluation is demonstrated using PM2.5 data at three monitoring locations. At these locations, the model is generally more capable of simulating the rate of change in the long-term trend component than its absolute magnitude. Amplitudes of the sub-seasonal and annual cycles of total PM2.5, SO4, and OC are well reproduced. However, the time-dependent phase difference in the annual cycles for total PM2.5, OC, and EC reveals a phase shift of up to half a year, indicating the need for proper temporal allocation of emissions and for updating the treatment of organic aerosols compared to the model version used for this set of simulations. Evaluation of sub-seasonal and interannual variations indicates that CMAQ is more capable of replicating the sub-seasonal cycles than interannual variations in magnitude and phase.

Regional-scale air pollution models are routinely being used worldwide for research, forecasting air quality, and regulatory purposes. It is well recognized that there are both reducible (systematic) and irreducible (unsystematic) errors in the meteorology–atmospheric-chemistry modeling systems. The inherent (random) uncertainty stems from our inability to properly characterize stochastic variations in atmospheric dynamics and chemistry and from the incommensurability associated with comparisons of the volume-averaged model estimates with point measurements. Because stochastic variations are not being explicitly simulated in the current generation of regional-scale meteorology–air quality models, one should expect to find differences between the model estimates and corresponding observations. This paper presents an observation-based methodology to determine the expected errors from current-generation regional air quality models even when the model design, physics, chemistry, and numerical analysis, as well as its input data, were “perfect”. To this end, the short-term synoptic-scale fluctuations embedded in the daily maximum 8 h ozone time series are separated from the longer-term forcing using a simple recursive moving average filter. The inherent uncertainty attributable to the stochastic nature of the atmosphere is determined based on 30+ years of historical ozone time series data measured at various monitoring sites in the contiguous United States (CONUS). The results reveal that the expected root mean square error (RMSE) at the median and 95th percentile is about 2 and 5 ppb, respectively, even for perfect air quality models driven with perfect input data. Quantitative estimation of the limit to the model's accuracy will help in objectively assessing the current state of the science in regional air pollution models, measuring progress in their evolution, and providing meaningful and firm targets for improvements in their accuracy relative to ambient measurements.

Summary: Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited, progressive neurological disorder characterized by degenerating striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs). One promising approach for treating HD is cell replacement therapy, where lost cells are replaced by MSN progenitors derived from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). While there has been remarkable progress in generating hPSC-derived MSNs, current production methods rely on two-dimensional culture systems that can include poorly defined components, limit scalability, and yield differing preclinical results. To facilitate clinical translation, here, we generated striatal progenitors from hPSCs within a fully defined and scalable PNIPAAm-PEG three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel. Transplantation of 3D-derived striatal progenitors into a transgenic mouse model of HD slowed disease progression, improved motor coordination, and increased survival. In addition, the transplanted cells developed an MSN-like phenotype and formed synaptic connections with host cells. Our results illustrate the potential of scalable 3D biomaterials for generating striatal progenitors for HD cell therapy. : Adil et al. used a 3D biomaterial to generate hPSC-derived MSN progenitors, which rapidly matured into action potential firing neurons. When striatally transplanted in HD genetic model mice, 3D-generated cells significantly delayed disease onset, alleviated disease symptoms, and increased lifespan. This approach demonstrates the scalable generation of functional MSNs, with implications for clinical translation of cell replacement therapy in HD. Context: New Gleason Score of Prostate. Aims: The aim of this study is to assign the patients with carcinoma prostate into new prognostic grade groups (PGGs) based on revised Gleason score (GS) and follow-up according to the WHO 2016. Subjects and Methods: All the biopsies/resected specimens of carcinoma prostate from January 2014 to June 2016 were reviewed, and GS was done according to the WHO 2016. Accordingly, cribriform, fused, and glomeruloid glands were assigned GS 4. Thus, two groups were identified with GS 7 (3 + 4 and 4 + 3). The patients were grouped into PGGs 1–5. The number of patients with change in the prognostic group along with follow-up was calculated. Results: There were 143 patients with carcinoma prostate, with a median age of 65 years. The initial GS was revised, and there was a decrease in GS 3 + 4 from 13.9% to 9% and increase in 4 + 3 from 19.6% to 23.8%. There was upgradation of PGG in 11 (7.69%) biopsies; with PGG from 1 to 2 in one; 2to 3 in eight; and 3to 4 in two. Follow-up at 2 years in 22 showed the poor prognoses in the patients who were upgraded to the higher prognostic group. Conclusions: A change in PGG according to the WHO 2016 criteria was assigned in 7.69% biopsies of carcinoma prostate, and it correlated with prognosis.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) remain among the most significant and intriguing unsolved problems in obstetrics. In India, the prevalence of HDP was 7.8% with pre-eclampsia in 5.4% of the study population. The anaesthetic problems in HDP may be due to the effects on the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurologic, renal, haematologic, hepatic and uteroplacental systems. The basic management objectives should be facilitating the birth of an infant who subsequently thrives and completes restoration of health to the mother, or the termination of pregnancy with the least possible trauma to mother and foetus in severe pre-eclampsia. This comprises obstetric management, adequate foetal surveillance, antihypertensive management, anticonvulsant therapy, safe analgesia for labour and management of anaesthesia for delivery.

Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) offer considerable potential for the treatment of demyelinating diseases and injuries of the CNS. However, generating large quantities of high-quality OPCs remains a substantial challenge that impedes their therapeutic application. Here, we show that OPCs can be generated from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) in a three-dimensional (3D), scalable, and fully defined thermoresponsive biomaterial system. We used CRISPR/Cas9 to create a NKX2.2-EGFP human embryonic stem cell reporter line that enabled fine-tuning of early OPC specification and identification of conditions that markedly increased the number of OLIG2+ and NKX2.2+ cells generated from hPSCs. Transplantation of 50-day-old OPCs into the brains of NOD/SCID mice revealed that progenitors generated in 3D without cell selection or purification subsequently engrafted, migrated, and matured into myelinating oligodendrocytes in vivo. These results demonstrate the potential of harnessing lineage reporter lines to develop 3D platforms for rapid and large-scale production of OPCs.

Adequate lymph node harvest in resected colorectal cancer (CRC) specimens is important in staging and choosing appropriate therapeutic options. The yield of lymph nodes and metastatic nodes by methylene blue dye injection in 30 randomly selected resected CRC specimens was compared with an equal number of CRC specimens (control) with matched grade and stage.The mean number of lymph nodes retrieved in the study group was 22 ± 9 compared to 17 ± 8 in the control group which was statistically significant (P = 0.04).Methylene blue technique is an effective aid in increasing the yield of lymph nodes in the resected CRC specimens.

Online coupled mesoscale meteorology atmospheric chemistry models have undergone a rapid evolution in recent years. Although mainly developed by the air quality modelling community, these models are also of interest for numerical weather prediction and regional climate modelling as they can consider not only the effects of meteorology on air quality, but also the potentially important effects of atmospheric composition on weather. Two ways of online coupling can be distinguished: online integrated and online access coupling. Online integrated models simulate meteorology and chemistry over the same grid in one model using one main time step for integration. Online access models use independent meteorology and chemistry modules that might even have different grids, but exchange meteorology and chemistry data on a regular and frequent basis. This article offers a comprehensive review of the current research status of online coupled meteorology and atmospheric chemistry modelling within Europe. Eighteen regional online coupled models developed or being used in Europe are described and compared. Topics discussed include a survey of processes relevant to the interactions between atmospheric physics, dynamics and composition; a brief overview of existing online mesoscale models and European model developments; an analysis on how feedback processes are treated in these models; numerical issues associated with coupled models; and several case studies and model performance evaluation methods. Finally, this article highlights selected scientific issues and emerging challenges that require proper consideration to improve the reliability and usability of these models for the three scientific communities: air quality, numerical meteorology modelling (including weather prediction) and climate modelling. This review will be of particular interest to model developers and users in all three fields as it presents a synthesis of scientific progress and provides recommendations for future research directions and priorities in the development, application and evaluation of online coupled models.

This study is conducted in the framework of the Air Quality Modelling Evaluation International Initiative (AQMEII) and aims at the operational evaluation of an ensemble of 12 regional-scale chemical transport models used to predict air quality over the North American (NA) and European (EU) continents for 2006. The modelled concentrations of ozone and CO, along with the meteorological fields of wind speed (WS) and direction (WD), temperature (T), and relative humidity (RH), are compared against high-quality in-flight measurements collected by instrumented commercial aircraft as part of the Measurements of OZone, water vapour, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides by Airbus In-service airCraft (MOZAIC) programme. The evaluation is carried out for five model domains positioned around four major airports in NA (Portland, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Dallas) and one in Europe (Frankfurt), from the surface to 8.5 km. We compare mean vertical profiles of modelled and measured variables for all airports to compute error and variability statistics, perform analysis of altitudinal error correlation, and examine the seasonal error distribution for ozone, including an estimation of the bias introduced by the lateral boundary conditions (BCs). The results indicate that model performance is highly dependent on the variable, location, season, and height (e.g. surface, planetary boundary layer (PBL) or free troposphere) being analysed. While model performance for T is satisfactory at all sites (correlation coefficient in excess of 0.90 and fractional bias ≤ 0.01 K), WS is not replicated as well within the PBL (exhibiting a positive bias in the first 100 m and also underestimating observed variability), while above 1000 m, the model performance improves (correlation coefficient often above 0.9). The WD at NA airports is found to be biased in the PBL, primarily due to an overestimation of westerly winds. RH is modelled well within the PBL, but in the free troposphere large discrepancies among models are observed, especially in EU. CO mixing ratios show the largest range of modelled-to-observed standard deviations of all the examined species at all heights and for all airports. Correlation coefficients for CO are typically below 0.6 for all sites and heights, and large errors are present at all heights, particularly in the first 250 m. Model performance for ozone in the PBL is generally good, with both bias and error within 20%. Profiles of ozone mixing ratios depend strongly on surface processes, revealed by the sharp gradient in the first 2 km (10 to 20 ppb km−1). Modelled ozone in winter is biased low at all locations in the NA, primarily due to an underestimation of ozone from the BCs. Most of the model error in the PBL is due to surface processes (emissions, transport, photochemistry), while errors originating aloft appear to have relatively limited impact on model performance at the surface. Suggestions for future work include interpretation of the model-to-model variability and common sources of model bias, and linking CO and ozone bias to the bias in the meteorological fields. Based on the results from this study, we suggest possible in-depth, process-oriented and diagnostic investigations to be carried out next.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of fixed drug combination (FDC) halometasone 0.05% and fusidic acid 2% (group A) vs FDC betamethasone 0.12% and neomycin sulfate 0.5% cream (group B) in acute or chronic infected eczematous dermatosis, through a randomized open-label, comparative, multicentric study. Materials and Methods: A total of 152 patients were randomized to either Group A or Group B. EASI (Eczema Area and Severity Index), IGA (Investigator′s global assessment), scale for severity of eczema, pruritus, and safety parameters were assessed at baseline, Day 5/Day 10, Day 10/20, and Day 20/Day 30 for acute/chronic cases. Skin swabs were tested at screening, Day 10, and end of the study. Results: Staphylococcus aureus was the frequently encountered causative agent. There was a significant reduction within the study groups in EASI, IGA scales for severity of eczema, pruritus at various visits, compared to baseline. At the end of study, 83.87% in group A and 65.71% in group B were culture negative. Cure rate was 54.28% and 50% in group A and B, respectively. Five adverse events were reported in five patients, of which three patients withdrew from the study. Conclusion: Halometasone 0.05% and Fusidic acid 2% cream is effective, safe, well tolerated with comparable efficacy to the comparator in the treatment of acute and chronic infected eczematous dermatosis.

La creciente utilización de diagnósticos invasivos y procedimientos de intervención en enfermedades cardiovasculares han enfatizado la importancia de entender y documentar mejor el tipo y la frecuencia de las variaciones vasculares. Los defectos del corazón se encuentran entre las anomalías congénitas más comunes. Estas pueden ser simples o complejas. En la mayoría de las anomalías congénitas del corazón se requiere intervención quirúrgica para garantizar la vida. Los médicos y cirujanos deben ser educados sobre las distintas formas de enfermedades congénitas del corazón para facilitarles su manejo. En este artículo reportamos un caso de un recién nacido de 28 días de raza india al cual se le detectó, durante la autopsia, una anomalía muy poco frecuente. Esta consistía en la presencia de una sola aurícula y un sólo ventrículo comunicados por un sólo orificio aurículo-ventricular. Casos como este son incom-patibles con la vida. The increasing use of invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures in cardiovascular diseases makes it important that the type and frequency of vascular variations are well documented and understood. Congenital heart defects are among the most common of all birth defects. They can be thought of being common or complex lesions. In most cases of complex congenital heart defects surgical intervention is required in order to sustain life. Surgeons and Physicians need to be informed of the various forms of congenital heart diseases in order to be able to manage such conditions. We report an unusual case found on autopsy of a 28 days old male East Indian neonate, who had single atrial and single ventricular chambers of the heart, which were connected by common atrio-ventricular orifice. This congenital heart defect has to be documented. Such cases are usually incompatible with life.

This study presents a comparative evaluation of the impact of WRF-NMM and WRF-ARW meteorology on CMAQ simulations of PM2.5, its composition and related precursors over the eastern United States with the intensive observations obtained by aircraft (NOAA WP-3), ship and surface monitoring networks (AIRNow, IMPROVE, CASTNet and STN) during the 2006 TexAQS/GoMACCS study. The results at the AIRNow surface sites show that both ARW-CMAQ and NMM-CMAQ reproduced day-to-day variations of observed PM2.5 and captured the majority of observed PM2.5 within a factor of 2 with a NMB value of −0.4% for ARW-CMAQ and −18% for NMM-CMAQ. Both models performed much better at the urban sites than at the rural sites, with greater underpredictions at the rural sites. Both models consistently underestimated the observed PM2.5 at the rural IMPROVE sites by −1% for the ARW-CMAQ and −19% for the NMM-CMAQ. The greater underestimations of SO42−, OC and EC by the NMM-CMAQ contributed to increased underestimation of PM2.5 at the IMPROVE sites. The NMB values for PM2.5 at the STN urban sites are 15% and −16% for the ARW-CMAQ and NMM-CMAQ, respectively. The underestimation of PM2.5 at the STN sites by the NMM-CMAQ mainly results from the underestimations of the SO42−, NH4+ and TCM components, whereas the overestimation of PM2.5 at the STN sites by the ARW-CMAQ results from the overestimations of SO42−, NO3−, and NH4+. The Comparison with WP-3 aircraft measurements reveals that both ARW-CMAQ and NMM-CMAQ have very similar model performance for vertical profiles for PM2.5 chemical components (SO42−, NH4+) and related gaseous species (HNO3, SO2, NH3, isoprene, toluene, terpenes) as both models used the same chemical mechanisms and emissions. The results of ship along the coast of southeastern Texas over the Gulf of Mexico show that both models captured the temporal variations and broad synoptic change seen in the observed HCHO and acetaldehyde with the means NMB 2.

Background and Objective: Zygomycosis is an emerging infection worldwide. Pulmonary zygomycosis (PZ) is uncommon with only few reported series from India. Materials and Methods: All cases of PZ diagnosed on histopathology between 1995 and 2008 were included. Clinical and imageological findings were noted in all cases. Routine hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections were studied to assess the pathology; Gomori′s methenamine silver (GMS), periodic acid Schiff were done for delineating fungal morphology. Culture reports were collected wherever available. Treatment and outcome details were noted. Results: Seven patients were diagnosed with PZ during the study period, which included six males and one female patient. Six of these had diabetes mellitus (DM) and one patient was on chemotherapy for the treatment of Hodgkin′s lymphoma. Fever and cough were the most common presenting features. Consolidation with or without cavitation was seen in six patients and lung abscess with fungal ball in one patient. All six patients with DM had upper lobe involvement and four had multiple lesions. Histological sections revealed necrotizing inflammation, hemorrhagic infarcts and angioinvasion. Culture was available in two patients, which grew Rhizopus oryzae. Five patients succumbed to disease and remaining two were lost to follow-up. Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus is the most common predisposing factor for PZ and carries high mortality.

Berardinelli-Seip congenital lipodystrophy (BSCL) is a very rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by various dermatological and systemic manifestations such as lipoatrophy, hypertriglyceridemia, hepatomegaly, acanthosis nigricans, and acromegaloid features. BSCL type 2 is more common and severe, with onset in the neonatal period or in early infancy. The locus for BSCL2 has been identified on chromosome 11q13. Early recognition and differentiation from other congenital generalized lipodystrophies help in the initiation of appropriate preventive and therapeutic measures such as lifestyle modification and pharmacotherapy that helps postpone the onset of metabolic syndrome. We report BSCL type 2 in two siblings with several cutaneous manifestations like acanthosis nigricans, hypertrichosis, prominent subcutaneous veins, and increased lanugo hair.

A systematic investigation of various Oxazole derivatives has been subjected to a Polarized Continuums Model (PCM) for evaluation of their physico-chemical parameters. The data thus obtained have been used to discuss the effect of substituents on polarizability of the oxazole aromatic ring and its possible dependence on the lipophilicity. In view of their biological activity a quantitative dependence of the physico-chemical parameters of the oxazole derivatives with the π– lipophilicity distributive parameter [8] with respect to substituents on the oxazole aromatic ring, have been attempted. These physico-chemical parameters showed a dependence with respect to their X1, X2 and X3 substituents as H, H, H < H, H,Ph < H,Ph < Ph, Ph, Ph The variations thuas obtained have been discussed in light of substitutions and their effect on the polarizability of the oxale ring.
