Dye pollutants, mainly discharged from the textile industry, have caused severe risks to human health and the ecosystem because of their toxicity, non-biodegradability, and carcinogenicity. This study investigated the use of commercial biochar derived from melaleuca wood as an adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) using a packed-bed column. The selected biochar was characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The experiments were performed to determine breakthrough curves (BTCs) with varying pH (3–9), inflow rate (5–20 mL min–1), bed height (16–65 cm), and initial MB concentration (0.75–9 mg L–1). The biochar (particle size of 1–2 mm) exhibited a low adsorption capacity for MB (~21 mg kg–1), resulting in a short breakthrough time. The Thomas, Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, and Bed Depth Service Time models were quite suitable for describing the experimental BTCs, with R2-values ranging from 0.92 to 0.98. The obtained BTCs were not in the typical S-shape, which characterizes diffusion-controlled adsorption. Therefore, a serial logistic-exponential model, which accounts for both the mass transfer and interaction contributions, was proposed. The experimental data effectively fit this proposed model, as indicated by high R2-values (>0.998). The dominant influence of mass transfer compared to interaction in controlling the adsorption rate of MB was highlighted.

Introduction and purpose. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is characterized by left ventricular (LV) wall thickening not associated with increased afterload (hypertension and aortic stenosis), is usually caused by mutations in sarcomeric protein genes, and is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. Unlike HCM, myocardial hypertrophy in its phenocopies is associated with the accumulation of substances such as amyloid, glycogen, etc. in the myocardium. The aim of our work was to analyze the features of the diagnosis and course of HCM in real clinical practice. Material and methods. A retrospective analysis of medical records of 80 patients (56.3 % of men) discharged with a diagnosis of HCM from a multidisciplinary hospital in Moscow in the period from 2007 to 2021 was carried out. The diagnosis of HCM in all patients was established on the basis of echocardiography data. The median age (25th and 75th percentiles are indicated in brackets) was 57 (48.5; 63) years. The duration of hospitalization was 8 (6; 12.5) days. Results. The reason for hospitalization was angina syndrome in 35 %, suspicion of acute coronary syndrome in 16.3 %, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) in 11.3 %, decompensation of chronic heart failure in 11.3 %, syncope in 7.5 % %, hypertensive crisis in 3.8 %, coronary angiography in 3.8 %, pacemaker implantation in 2.5 %, consultation with an arrhythmologist in 2.5 %, implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator in 1.2 %, medical examination to resolve the issue of fitness for military service in 1.2 %, acute cerebrovascular accident in 1.2 %, hypotension in 1.2 %, drug bradycardia in 1.2 % of patients. Before hospitalization, a history of myocardial infarction was diagnosed in 15 %, arterial hypertension — in 53.8 %, chronic heart failure — in 77.6 %, chronic kidney disease — in 21.3 % of patients. Prior to the analyzed hospitalization, a history of myocardial infarction was diagnosed in 15 %, arterial hypertension in 53.8 %, chronic heart failure in 77.6 %, chronic kidney disease in 21.3 % of patients. LV wall thickness ≥1.5 cm was detected in 91.2 %, symmetrical form of hypertrophy — 22.1 %, apical — 5.2 %, papillary muscle hypertrophy — 1.3 %, interventricular septum — 71.4 % of patients. Permanent obstruction of the LV outflow tract (LVOTO) was detected in 62.8 % (9.0 % of patients had a history of septal reduction), transient LVOTO — in 1.3 %, non-obstructive HCM — in 35.9 %. Cardiac amyloidosis performance is in many ways similar to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), and therefore it is extremely difficult to distinguish these two diseases in practice. The present study was performed to identify features that aid in the differential diagnosis by analyzing clinical, electrocardiographic, echocardiographic and laboratory data in patients with systemic amyloidosis and HCM. In the study, 38 patients with cardiac amyloidosis and 80 patients with HCM were examined. It was found that symmetrical left ventricular (LV) wall thickening, granular and sparkling appearance of the myocardium and thickened heart valves were the best cardiac predictors, and age above 63 years, decreased glomerular filtration rate and proteinuria were the best non-cardiac predictors of cardiac amyloidosis, whereas low QRS voltage and pericardial effusion were of less clinical significance. Systolic anterior motion of the anterior mitral leaflet, asymmetric LV wall thickening, and electrocardiographic signs of LV hypertrophy were highly suggestive of HCM. Thus, standard noninvasive methods may be useful for identifying myocardial infiltrative processes and differentiating cardiac amyloidosis from HCM.

Introduction: Our work introduces a real-time robotic localization and mapping system for buried pipe networks.Methods: The system integrates non-vision-based exploration and navigation with an active-vision-based localization and topological mapping algorithm. This algorithm is selectively activated at topologically key locations, such as junctions. Non-vision-based sensors are employed to detect junctions, minimizing the use of visual data and limiting the number of images taken within junctions.Results: The primary aim is to provide an accurate and efficient mapping of the pipe network while ensuring real-time performance and reduced computational requirements.Discussion: Simulation results featuring robots with fully autonomous control in a virtual pipe network environment are presented. These simulations effectively demonstrate the feasibility of our approach in principle, offering a practical solution for mapping and localization in buried pipes.

Infiltrative cardiomyopathies are a group of diseases characterized by the deposition of abnormal substances in heart tissues, which leads to thickening of the walls or dilation of chambers with a secondary decrease in wall thickness and the development of diastolic, less often systolic, ventricular dysfunction. Most often, these are progressive diseases that, in the absence of adequate therapy, have an unfavorable prognosis. Clinical manifestations of infiltrative cardiac diseases are variable, which often leads to diagnostic difficulties and errors. In most cases, specific laboratory and morphological tests are required to confirm or clarify the diagnosis. Early diagnosis is critical to initiating therapy and improving patient prognosis. This article provides characteristic signs and symptoms, the so-called "red flags", making it possible to suspect infiltrative cardiomyopathies, diagnose them at an early stage and start life-saving therapy.

Background. The central regions of Vietnam are of strategic importance for the Republic, being, in fact, the gateway to the ASEAN countries. Investing in the exploration and evaluation of mineral resources, in particular ore minerals hidden at great depths, is a specific and necessary task for the country.Aim. To clarify the structural-tectonic scheme of the analysed area and to identify the main fault systems and zoning of the Central Vietnam area by the gravitational field based on classification algorithms.Materials and methods. The objectives were achieved by assessing the total gradient of the gravitational field, analysing the distribution of the field variance and the results of tracing the axes of the gravitational field anomaly. Interpretation processing of gravity data was carried out using the “COSCAD 3D” computer technology of statistical and spectral correlation data analysis.Results. The defined fault systems, which play an important role in the processes of mineral formation, have a northwestern, northeastern and latitudinal strike. The zoning of the study area according to the gravitational field, its characteristics and available geological information made it possible to identify 13 homogeneous areas. Each area is characterised by a certain level of gravitational field, the values of dispersion and total field gradient, as well as correlations between attributes. The classification results confirms the complexity of the geological structure of the area under study and the presence of three main strikes of the systems of tectonic dislocations – northwestern, northeastern and latitudinal.Conclusions. A large number of tectonic dislocations of various strikes and intensities, revealed using the methods of the probabilistic-statistical approach, implemented in the “COSCAD 3D” computer technology, indicates that the area under study is promising in terms of ore deposits.

Despite recent advances in robotic technology, sewer pipe inspection is still limited to conventional approaches that use cable-tethered robots. Such commercially available tethered robots lack autonomy, and their operation must be manually controlled via their tethered cables. Consequently, they can only travel to a certain distance in pipe, cannot access small-diameter pipes, and their deployment incurs high costs for highly skilled operators. In this paper, we introduce a miniaturised mobile robot for pipe inspection. We present an autonomous control strategy for this robot that is effective, stable, and requires only low-computational resources. The robots used here can access pipes as small as 75 mm in diameter. Due to their small size, low carrying capacity, and limited battery supply, our robots can only carry simple sensors, a small processor, and miniature wheel-legs for locomotion. Yet, our control method is able to compensate for these limitations. We demonstrate fully autonomous robot mobility in a sewer pipe network, without any visual aid or power-hungry image processing. The control algorithm allows the robot to correctly recognise each local network configuration, and to make appropriate decisions accordingly. The control strategy was tested using the physical micro robot in a laboratory pipe network. In both simulation and experiment, the robot autonomously and exhaustively explored an unknown pipe network without missing any pipe section while avoiding obstacles. This is a significant advance towards fully autonomous inspection robot systems for sewer pipe networks.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) occurs in 4.3-28% of patients with diabetes mellitus and is most often associated with the presence of coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension and the direct adverse effects of insulin-resistance, hyperinsulinemia and hyperglycemia on the myocardium. Diabetes mellitus occurs in 12-47% of patients with CHF and can develop within several years after a diagnosis of HF in 22% of patients due to insulin-resistance of failure tissues. The presence of diabetes mellitus leads to a greater severity of clinical symptoms and hospitalization rate, worsening of quality of life and prognosis in CHF. A decreased left ventricular ejection fraction is an independent predictor of the poor prognosis in the patients with diabetes mellitus. The algorithm of the treatment of CHF in the patients with and without diabetes mellitus is not fundamentally different, but it requires taking into account the metabolic effects of the prescribed drugs. Angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor are increasingly used in clinical practice and are gradually replacing angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and sartans in CHF both without diabetes mellitus and in its presence. Recently, the effectiveness of type 2 sodium glucose cotransporter inhibitors has been proven in patients with CHF with and without diabetes mellitus. This review is devoted to the relationship of diabetes mellitus and CHF, as well as the approaches to the management of such comorbid patients.

Introduction: Transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis is a severe rare disease with wide range of characters without specific symptoms including the damage to the peripheral nervous system and cardiac involvement. Case report: A 60-year-old female patient represented with weakness and paresthesia in the distal parts of the lower limbs, impeding walking for 2 years. Initially, symptoms were considered as a manifestation of degenerative stenosis of the lumbar spine, decompressive laminectomy was performed but the symptoms after surgical treatment persisted. Based on data from clinical and electroneuromyographic examinations, axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy was diagnosed. Genetic testing of the patient, her elder sister, son and daughter using the Sanger sequencing method detected a variant of the nucleotide sequence in the fourth exon of the transthyretin gene (Chr18: 29178562, rs148538950, NM_000371.3: c.G368A: p. Arg123His) in the heterozygous state. A subcutaneous fatty tissue biopsy of abdominal wall with a Congo red stain and polarized light examination revealed amyloid microdeposits, grade CR 1+ (minimal deposits), confirmed the diagnosis of familial ATTR-amyloidosis. Echocardiography revealed concentric left ventricular wall thickening with normal end diastolic size and volume, preserved ejection fraction, left atrial enlargement, pulmonary hypertension and type 1 diastolic dysfunction. Specific anti-amyloid therapy — tafamidis was prescribed. Conclusion: In patients with peripheral polyneuropathy and left ventricular hypertrophy of unknown etiology, a complex examination is necessary for the timely detection and treatment of amyloid polyneuropathy and cardiomyopathy.

Cardiac amyloidosis (amyloid cardiomyopathy) is a disease damage to the heart caused by extracellular amyloid deposition. In some cases, there may be local damage to the structures of the heart, for example, the atria; more often, heart damage is part of a systemic (generalized) pathology. Depending on the amyloid precursor protein, 36 types of amyloidosis are described, among which hereditary and acquired forms are distinguished. Cardiac amyloidosis is diagnosed 1) in the case of the amyloid infiltration in the myocardial bioptates or 2) in the case of non-cardiac amyloid deposition and the left ventricular wall thickening >12 mm without arterial hypertension and other reasons. The heart is most often affected in AL-, ATTR-, AA-, AANF-types of amyloidosis. Cardiac amyloidosis should be considered in patients with a heart failure with an unclear etiology, especially with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction, refractory to treatment, with proteinuria and CKD 4-5, in patients with idiopathic atrial fibrillation and conduction disturbances, in patients with left ventricular wall thickening of unclear etiology, low ECG voltage, unexplained arterial hypotension and pulmonary hypertension. Screening for cardiac amyloidosis should include non-invasive methods such as electrophoresis and immunofixation of blood and urine proteins, the free light lambda and kappa chains of immunoglobulins, 99Tc-DPD scintigraphy, genetic testing (if hereditary variants of amyloidosis are suspected), as well as a histological examination of biopsy samples stained with Congo red and polarizing microscopy.

Abstract Background Plant height and leaf angle are important determinants of yield in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Genes involved in regulating plant height and leaf angle were identified in previous studies; however, there are many remaining unknown factors that affect rice architecture. Results In this study, we characterized a dwarf mutant named ds1 with small grain size and decreased leaf angle,selected from an irradiated population of ssp. japonica variety Nanjing35. The ds1 mutant also showed abnormal floral organs. ds1 plants were insensitive to BL treatment and expression of genes related to BR signaling was changed. An F2 population from a cross between ds1 and indica cultivar 93–11 was used to fine map DS1 and to map-based clone the DS1 allele, which encoded an EMF1-like protein that acted as a transcriptional regulator. DS1 was constitutively expressed in various tissues, and especially highly expressed in young leaves, panicles and seeds. We showed that the DS1 protein interacted with auxin response factor 11 (OsARF11), a major transcriptional regulator of plant height and leaf angle, to co-regulate D61/OsBRI1 expression. These findings provide novel insights into understanding the molecular mechanisms by which DS1 integrates auxin and brassinosteroid signaling in rice. Conclusion The DS1 gene encoded an EMF1-like protein in rice. The ds1 mutation altered the expression of genes related to BR signaling, and ds1 was insensitive to BL treatment. DS1 interacts with OsARF11 to co-regulate OsBRI1 expression.

The results of tomato lines resistance test to tomato spotted wilt virus and its comparison to molecular marker SCAR Sw421 genotyping data is shown. A molecular marker SCAR Sw421 analysis allowed identifying homozygous and heterozygous tomato genotypes possessing Sw5 alleles in segregating populations. Selected tomato lines possessing dominant homozygous alleles of Sw5 gene represent a tomato germplasm resistant to tomato spotted wilt virus and would be useful for following crop improvement.

The main objective of quantum simulation is an in-depth understanding of many-body physics, which is important for fundamental issues (quantum phase transitions, transport, …) and for the development of innovative materials. Analytic approaches to many-body systems are limited, and the huge size of their Hilbert space makes numerical simulations on classical computers intractable. A quantum simulator avoids these limitations by transcribing the system of interest into another, with the same dynamics but with interaction parameters under control and with experimental access to all relevant observables. Quantum simulation of spin systems is being explored with trapped ions, neutral atoms, and superconducting devices. We propose here a new paradigm for quantum simulation of spin-1/2 arrays, providing unprecedented flexibility and allowing one to explore domains beyond the reach of other platforms. It is based on laser-trapped circular Rydberg atoms. Their long intrinsic lifetimes, combined with the inhibition of their microwave spontaneous emission and their low sensitivity to collisions and photoionization, make trapping lifetimes in the minute range realistic with state-of-the-art techniques. Ultracold defect-free circular atom chains can be prepared by a variant of the evaporative cooling method. This method also leads to the detection of arbitrary spin observables with single-site resolution. The proposed simulator realizes an XXZ spin-1/2 Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor couplings ranging from a few to tens of kilohertz. All the model parameters can be dynamically tuned at will, making a large range of simulations accessible. The system evolution can be followed over times in the range of seconds, long enough to be relevant for ground-state adiabatic preparation and for the study of thermalization, disorder, or Floquet time crystals. The proposed platform already presents unrivaled features for quantum simulation of regular spin chains. We discuss extensions towards more general quantum simulations of interacting spin systems with full control on individual interactions.

Abstract Aims Adverse factors in the psychosocial work environment are associated with the onset of depression among those without a personal history of depression. However, the evidence is sparse regarding whether adverse work factors can also play a role in depression recurrence. This study aimed to prospectively examine whether factors in the psychosocial work environment are associated with first-time and recurrent treatment for depression. Methods The study included 24,226 participants from the Danish Well-being in Hospital Employees study. We measured ten individual psychosocial work factors and three theoretical constructs (effort–reward imbalance, job strain and workplace social capital). We ascertained treatment for depression through registrations of hospital contacts for depression (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems version 10 [ICD-10]: F32 and F33) and redeemed prescriptions of antidepressant medication (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical [ATC]: N06A) in Danish national registries. We estimated the associations between work factors and treatment for depression for up to 2 years after baseline among those without (first-time treatment) and with (recurrent treatment) a personal history of treatment for depression before baseline. We excluded participants registered with treatment within 6 months before baseline. In supplementary analyses, we extended this washout period to up to 2 years. We applied logistic regression analyses with adjustment for confounding. Results Among 21,156 (87%) participants without a history of treatment for depression, 350 (1.7%) had first-time treatment during follow-up. Among the 3070 (13%) participants with treatment history, 353 (11%) had recurrent treatment during follow-up. Those with a history of depression generally reported a more adverse work environment than those without such a history. Baseline exposure to bullying (odds ratio [OR] = 1.72, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.30–2.32), and to some extent also low influence on work schedule (OR = 1.27, 95% CI: 0.97–1.66) and job strain (OR = 1.24, 95% CI: 0.97–1.57), was associated with first-time treatment for depression during follow-up. Baseline exposure to bullying (OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.04–1.88), lack of collaboration (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.03–1.67) and low job control (OR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.00–1.62) were associated with recurrent treatment for depression during follow-up. However, most work factors were not associated with treatment for depression. Using a 2-year washout period resulted in similar or stronger associations. Conclusions Depression constitutes a substantial morbidity burden in the working-age population. Specific adverse working conditions were associated with first-time and recurrent treatment for depression and improving these may contribute to reducing the onset and recurrence of depression.

Cutting force is a vital parameter that affects product quality. Proper control of the cutting force helps optimize the production process as it improves productivity and product quality. This paper assesses the influence of machining parameters, such as alloy steel hardness and workpiece diameters, to cutting forces when external cylindrical grinding by experimental methods. The cutting force was measured using a workpiece shaft-mounted sensor with a balanced bridge-type resistor sensor. Steel for testing: 40Cr, 9CrSi, 65Mn, and W18Cr4V, which were heat-treated at three different hardness levels: 40, 50, and 60 HRC. The Taguchi method's experimental results show that the main parameters affecting cutting forces are: Feed rate of the grinding wheel Sd, cutting depth t, and hardness of workpiece material on the HRC scale. Since then, we built a mathematical model of the normal cutting force function Fn and tangent cutting force function Ft according to Sd, t, and HRC of 9CrSi steel then tested again with three steel types: 40Cr, 65Mn, and W18Cr4V for quite similar results. The cutting force is controlled through cutting parameters suitable for different hardness and workpiece material based on this model.

Introduction Declines in mental health among youth in the COVID-19 pandemic have been observed, yet longitudinal studies on how housing may impact these declines are lacking. Objectives Our aim was to determine whether changes in mental health among Danish youth were dependent on their housing conditions. Methods Young participants from the Danish National Birth Cohort, who had responded to an online questionnaire at 18 years of age, and later during the initial national Danish lockdown, were included. Associations between housing conditions (direct access to outdoor spaces, urbanicity, household density, and household composition) and changes in mental health (mental well-being, quality of life (QoL) and loneliness) were examined in multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses. Results We included 7455 participants. Greater decreases in mental well-being were observed for youth with no access to direct outdoor spaces and those living in denser households (mean difference -0.83 [95 % CI -1.19, -0.48], -0.30 [-0.43, -0.18], respectively). Onset of low mental well-being was associated with no access and living alone (odds ratios (OR) 1.68 [1.15, 2.47] and OR 1.47 [1.05, 2.07], respectively). Household density was negatively associated with QoL (mean difference -0.21 [-0.30, -0.12]). Youth living alone experienced more loneliness (OR 2.12 [95 % CI 1.59, 2.82]). Conclusions How youth’s mental health changed from before to during lockdown was associated with housing conditions. Among the Danish youth in our study, greater decreases in mental health during lockdown were observed among youth without access to outdoor spaces, living alone, or living in denser households. Graphene oxide (GO) is an oxygenated functionalized form of graphene that has received considerable attention because of its unique physical and chemical properties that are suitable for a large number of industrial applications. Herein, GO is rapidly obtained directly from the oxidation of graphene using an environmentally friendly modified Hummers method. As the starting material consists of graphene flakes, intercalant agents are not needed and the oxidation reaction is enhanced, leading to orders of magnitude reduction in the reaction time compared to the conventional methods of graphite oxidation. With a superior surface area, the graphene flakes are quickly and more homogeneously oxidized since the flakes are exposed at the same extension to the chemical agents, excluding the necessity of sonication to separate the stacked layers of graphite. This strategy shows an alternative approach to quickly producing GO with different degrees of oxidation that can be potentially used in distinct areas ranging from biomedical to energy storage applications.
