Abstract Metasurface solar absorber serves as a kind of important component for green energy devices to convert solar electromagnetic waves into thermal energy. In this work, we design a new solar light absorber configuration that incorporates the titanium nitride substrate, aluminum oxide layer, titanium nitride layer, and the topmost refractory nanostructures. The metasurface absorber based on this configuration can achieve an average spectral absorption of over 91% and a total solar radiation absorption of 91.5% at ultra-wide wavelengths of 300–2500 nm. It is discovered that the excellent performance of the proposed metasurface absorber is attributed to the synergistic effects of surface plasmonic effect and Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity resonance by comprehensive analysis of the simulated field distributions. Furthermore, the effect of geometrical parameter of the proposed configuration on absorber performance is studied, indicating the proposed configuration possesses a large fabrication tolerance. Moreover, the proposed configuration is not sensitive to the polarization direction and the angle of incident light. It is also found that the use of other refractory metal materials and other shapes as the topmost absorbent nanostructures also have good results with this configuration. This work can offer a universal platform for constructing and guiding the design of refractory metasurface solar absorbers.

Introduction. Sensor devices based on the surface plasmon resonance (SRP) phenomenon are widely used among the tools of information and diagnostic technologies. The main part of a device based on the surface plasmon resonance phenomenon is a sensor substrate, which consists of a glass plate, a film of plasma-supporting metal, usually gold, and additional layers to increase the sensitivity of the research. Depending on the thickness of the additional dielectric layers, the following types of sensors can be implemented: a conventional SPR sensor with a gold film without a dielectric; an Au/dielectric SPR sensor with a dielectric thickness less than the critical one, in which the system can maintain the plasmonic mode; a waveguide sensor on a metal sublayer, with a dielectric thickness sufficient for the emergence of waveguide modes. The Au/Nb2O5 thin-film system is promising for creating sensor substrates due to the high refractive index of Nb2O5 and its exceptional chemical and mechanical resistance. The purpose of the work. This work is devoted to computer modelling, calculation of performance characteristics and implementation of Au/Nb2O5 sensor substrates for SPR devices, including the Plasmontest series devices developed at the Institute of Cybernetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The behaviour of the characteristics of the SPR substrates with a plasma-supporting gold film, SPR substrates with sensitivity enhancement by an additional layer of Nb2O5 of nanometre thickness and with a waveguide layer of Nb2O5 thickness more than 150 nm are analysed. Calculations were performed for both refractive sensors on SPR and biosensors. Results. The theoretical analysis was carried out by computer modelling in Winspall and calculations in MATLAB using the Fresnel equations and the matrix method, which allowed a comprehensive analysis of the shape of the reflection curves, angular sensitivity, resolution and angular ranges for sensors with different dielectric coatings. It is shown that at a thickness of 0-10 nm, the Au/Nb2O5 structure will work as a SPR sensor with increased sensitivity, and at a thickness of 150-210 nm as a waveguide sensor on a metal sublayer. But, as calculations have shown, only the Au/Nb2O5 SPR sensor is promising for practical implementation to increase the sensitivity of biosensor measurements. The work carried out on the development of thin-film technology, which includes vacuum deposition of a thin-film structure of adhesive Nb (1–2 nm), plasma-supported Au (50 nm), Nb (3–5 nm) and thermal annealing (to oxidise the top layer of niobium), made it possible to implement Au/Nb2O5 substrates for SPR studies. Experimental studies have shown that the angular sensitivity of the Au/Nb2O5 refractometric SPR sensor is 1.5 times higher than that of a SPR sensor with a single Au film at niobium oxide layer thickness of about 6 nm. Thus, the experimentally determined increase in the angular sensitivity of the Au-Nb2O5 SPR sensor is consistent with the theoretical data. Conclusions. Calculations have shown an increase in the angular sensitivity of SPR sensors for Au/Nb2O5 sensor substrates compared to conventional Au film substrates for both refractometric (1.6 times) and biosensor (1.8 times) studies. The sensors on Au/Nb2O5 substrates for SPR studies, which we have designed and practically implemented, are cheap to manufacture, have higher sensitivity, and due to the exceptional chemical and mechanical stability of Nb2O5, can be used repeatedly in rather aggressive environments.

Subject and Purpose. The sources of errors are identified that may arise in the course of terahertz-range measurements of the dielectric constant of weakly absorbent dielectrics, if performed within the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique. Possible ways are analyzed for reducing or fully eliminating such errors. Methods and Methodology. Specific details of applying the SPR method for dielectric constant measurements have been analyzed, with the aim of identifying the major factors that particularly affect the measurement accuracy. Results. It has been noted that in order to reduce the level of backlight interference (which may lead to blinding the receiver), it is expedient to make surface resonance records via frequency scanning. In that case the impact of the interference signal nonstationarity arising from the partial conversion of the surface wave energy into that of the volume wave, which occurs at the grating edges, is markedly lower than in the case of angular scanning. A mathematical expression has been derived which suggests a relation between scanning step sizes in angle and in frequency (for the angular and frequency scanning, respectively). As has been shown, a better measurement accuracy is achievable if the SPR is recorded as a function of frequency. Indeed, the frequency can be varied, with the use of familiar technologies, in steps of a much smaller size than such adopted for angular scanning. Errors in the above measurements can also arise if the resonance is excited on a grating whose Fourier spectrum contains many high-frequency components which carry a noticeable portion of the diffracted radiation energy. These energy losses can be greatly reduced if the SPR is excited on a grating whose profile involves the lowest number of spatial Fourier harmonics. Conclusions. The method suggested allows a significant reduction in the level of errors of the dielectric constant measurements in weakly absorbing dielectrics if the surface plasmon resonance effects are registered in dependence on the incident frequency, while the SPR is excited at a diffraction grating whose troughs-and-peaks profile is close to harmonical.

Abstract Dopamine is one of the significant neurotransmitters and its monitoring in biological fluids is a critical issue in healthcare and modern biomedical technology. Here, we have developed a dopamine biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). For this purpose, the carboxymethyl dextran SPR chip was used as a surface to immobilize laccase as a bioaffinity recognition element. Data analysis exhibited that the acidic pH value is the optimal condition for dopamine interaction. Calculated kinetic affinity (KD) (48,545 nM), obtained from a molecular docking study, showed strong association of dopamine with the active site of laccase. The biosensor exhibited a linearity from 0.01 to 189 μg/ml and a lower detection limit of 0.1 ng/ml (signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) = 3) that is significantly higher than the most direct dopamine detecting sensors reported so far. Experiments for specificity in the presence of compounds that can co-exist with dopamine detection such as ascorbic acid, urea and l-dopa showed no significant interference. The current dopamine biosensor with high sensitivity and specificity, represent a novel detection tool that offers a label-free, simple procedure and cost effective monitoring system.

This paper studies a novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor using a BK7 glass prism, a copper (Cu) metal plasmonic layer, which combine a halide perovskite (FASnI3) with two-dimensional (2D) materials such as phosphorus black, graphene and TMDC (MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, WSe2) for the detection of breast cancer cells. We have optimized the thickness of each layer in order to obtain maximum sensitivity. A numerical study mainly uses the transfer matrix principle, while the attenuation total reflection method involves examining the reflection properties. The evaluation of SPR biosensor configurations serves to obtain optimal performance. The simulation results indicate that the integration of halide perovskite (FASnI3) and 2D materials into the BK7/Cu/medium sensing structure significantly improves the sensitivity and figure of merit (ZT). The outstanding results in terms of sensor performance characteristics are observed in the BK7/Cu (48 nm)/FASnI3 (5 nm)/BP (0.53 nm) configuration. The figure of merit and sensitivity estimated at 123.11 RIU−1 and 459.28°/RIU, with a notable improvement of 338.45 %.

Abstract Genetic studies have identified the voltage‐gated sodium channel 1.7 (Nav1.7) as pain target. Due to the ineffectiveness of small molecules and monoclonal antibodies as therapeutics for pain, single‐domain antibodies (VHHs) are developed against the human Nav1.7 (hNav1.7) using a novel antigen presentation strategy. A 70 amino‐acid peptide from the hNav1.7 protein is identified as a target antigen. A recombinant version of this peptide is grafted into the complementarity determining region 3 (CDR3) loop of an inert VHH in order to maintain the native 3D conformation of the peptide. This antigen is used to isolate one VHH able to i) bind hNav1.7, ii) slow the deactivation of hNav1.7, iii) reduce the ability of eliciting action potentials in nociceptors, and iv) reverse hyperalgesia in in vivo rat and mouse models. This VHH exhibits the potential to be developed as a therapeutic capable of suppressing pain. This novel antigen presentation strategy can be applied to develop biologics against other difficult targets such as ion channels, transporters and GPCRs.

Light harvesting materials are crucial for capturing the sunlight in a device such as a solar cell for better efficiency. In this study, we developed high surface area, submicron-sized TiO2 spheres (MTS) incorporated with anisotropic Au nanoparticles (Au_MTS) to create highly light-absorbing photoanodes for enhanced dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) efficiency. The high surface area of MTS (∼125 m2/g) allows for increased dye-loading, while their submicron size (150–300 nm) provides superior light-scattering capabilities for significantly enhancing the photoanode’s light absorption. Furthermore, incorporating of anisotropic Au nanoparticles enables broadband surface plasmon resonance (SPR) coupling, synergistically boosting photon harvesting in the Au_MTS photoanodes. The interconnected tiny TiO2 nanoparticle network in MTS supports charge carrier generation and transport, providing ample sites for dye adsorption and efficient electron pathways. Au_MTS with varying amounts of Au nanoparticles synthesized by a greener microwave-assisted synthesis method and DSSC devices were fabricated and compared with devices made from pristine MTS and P25 nanoparticles. The optimal Au_MTS device, containing ∼1.3 wt% Au nanoparticles, achieved a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ∼7.7%, representing improvements of ∼40% and ∼60% over pristine MTS (PCE of ∼5.2%) and P25 nanoparticles (PCE of ∼4.71%), respectively. Overall, this work demonstrates the effectiveness of plasmonic mesoporous photoanodes in enhancing DSSC performance through improved photo response, light scattering, and dye loading.

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor technology is a novel optical analysis method for studying intermolecular interactions. Owing to in-depth research on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in recent years, comprehensive and specific identification of components and target interactions has become key yet difficult tasks. SPR has gradually been used to analyze the active components of TCM owing to its high sensitivity, strong exclusivity, large flux, and real-time monitoring capabilities. This review sought to briefly introduce the active components of TCM and the principle of SPR, and provide historical and new insights into the application of SPR in the analysis of the active components of TCM.

This paper presents the design and simulation of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor using a Platinum diselenide (PtSe2) and Blue Phosphorus/tungsten disulfide (BlueP/WS2) heterostructure for biosensing protocols. The simulation is done by using a finite element method (FEM) based COMSOL Multiphysics software. The performance of the SPR biosensor is then optimized for obtaining maximum sensitivity, quality factor, detection accuracy, and low limit of detection (LOD). The SPR biosensor demonstrates a maximum sensitivity of 234 deg/RIU, suggesting its ability to detect minute refractive index changes with remarkable precision. Furthermore, a quality factor of 390 RIU−1 demonstrates the biosensor's capacity to detect tiny fluctuations in target analyte concentration. The achieved detection accuracy of 7.8 deg−1 presents the biosensor's ability to detect target biomolecule solutions in the desired RI range. The remarkably low LOD of 4.26 × 10−6 ensures early and accurate detection. The significance of this research lies in five layered hetero-structure based combinations of BK7 prism, gold, PtSe2, BlueP/WS2 and sensing medium respectively. The introduction of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) material of PtSe2 with a hybrid 2D nanomaterials heterostructure of BlueP and TMDCs offers a rapid, sensitive, label-free and reliable platform for early detection. Additionally, the FEM method allows for the investigation of physical phenomena as part of the work. In summary, the proposed senor outcomes effectively demonstrate the speedy capability of detecting any pathogens or analytes in the RI range of 1.330–1.350 with remarkable sensitivity and accuracy. The rapid detection without giving false results is the benefit of the proposed sensor structure.

Abstract Plasmonic hot carrier engineering holds great promise for advanced infrared optoelectronic devices. The process of hot carrier transfer has the potential to surpass the spectral limitations of semiconductors, enabling detection of sub‐bandgap infrared photons. By harvesting hot carriers prior to thermalization, energy dissipation is minimized, leading to highly efficient photoelectric conversion. Distinguished from conventional band‐edge carriers, the ultrafast interfacial transfer and ballistic transport of hot carriers present unprecedented opportunities for high‐speed photoelectric conversion. However, a complete description on the underlying mechanism of hot‐carrier infrared optoelectronic device is still lacking, and the utilization of this strategy for tailoring infrared response is in its early stages. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the generation, transfer and transport dynamics of hot carriers. Basic principles of hot‐carrier conversion in heterostructures are discussed in detail. In addition, progresses of two‐dimensional (2D) infrared hot‐carrier optoelectronic devices are summarized, with a specific emphasis on photodetectors, solar cells, light‐emitting devices and novel functionalities through hot‐carrier engineering. Furthermore, challenges and prospects of hot‐carrier device towards infrared applications are highlighted.

Biosensing, a promising branch of exploiting nanophotonic devices, enables meticulous detection of subwavelength light, which helps to analyze and manipulate light-matter interaction. The improved sensitivity of recent high-quality nanophotonic biosensors has enabled enhanced bioanalytical precision in detection. Considering the potential of nanophotonics in biosensing, this article summarizes recent advances in fabricating nanophotonic and optical biosensors, focusing on their sensing function and capacity. We typically classify these types of biosensors into five categories: phase-driven, resonant dielectric nanostructures, plasmonic nanostructures, surface-enhanced spectroscopies, and evanescent-field, and review the importance of enhancing sensor performance and efficacy by addressing some major concerns in nanophotonic biosensing, such as overcoming the difficulties in controlling biological specimens and lowering their costs for ease of access. We also address the possibility of updating these technologies for immediate implementation and their impact on enhancing safety and health.

Abstract A new type of human immunoglobulin G (IgG) sensors based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the low refractive index (RI) plastic optical fiber (POF) and an antibody immobilization method is presented. A 50-nm-thick gold film was formed on the polished D-shaped fiber surface by magnetron sputtering. The RI response of the POF sensor is 30 049.61 nm/RIU, which is 26.5 times higher than that of single mode fiber (SMF) SPR sensors. The proposed SPR biosensor can be developed by simple and rapid modification of the gold film with 11-mercapto undecanoic acid (MUA). Upon immobilization of the goat anti-human IgG antibody, the resonance wavelength shifts by 11.2 nm. The sensor can be used to specifically detect and quantify the human IgG at concentrations down to 245.4 ng/mL with the sensitivity of 1.327 7 nm per µg/mL, which offers an enhancement of 12.5-fold compared to that of the conventional SMF based SPR sensors. The proposed device may find the potential applications in the case of use at the point of care.

Optical materials with a tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are of great interest for applications in photonics and optoelectronics. In the present study, we explored the potential of generating an LSPR band with an ultra-broad range of over 1000 nm in gold nanoparticles (NPs), precipitated through a thermal treatment in ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass. Using optical absorption spectroscopy, we demonstrated that the LSPR band’s position and shape can be finely controlled by varying the thermal treatment route. Comprehensive methods including Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to study the glass structure, while computational approaches were used for the theoretical description of the absorption spectra. The obtained results allowed us to suggest a scenario responsible for an abnormal LSPR band broadening that includes a possible interparticle plasmonic coupling effect taking place during the liquid–liquid phase separation of the heat-treated glass. The formation of gold NPs with an ultra-broad LSPR band in glasses holds promise for sensitizing rare earth ion luminescence for new photonics devices.

Abstract Designing Photonic Crystal Fibers incorporating the Surface Plasmon Resonance Phenomenon (PCF-SPR) has led to numerous interesting applications. This investigation presents an exceptionally responsive surface plasmon resonance sensor, seamlessly integrated into a dual-core photonic crystal fiber, specifically designed for low refractive index (RI) detection. The integration of a plasmonic material, namely silver (Ag), externally deposited on the fiber structure, facilitates real-time monitoring of variations in the refractive index of the surrounding medium. To ensure long-term functionality and prevent oxidation, a thin layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) covers the silver coating. To optimize the sensor, five key design parameters, including pitch, air hole diameter, and silver thickness, are fine-tuned using the Taguchi L8(25) orthogonal array. The optimal results obtained present spectral and amplitude sensitivities that reach remarkable values of 10,000 nm/RIU and 235,882 RIU-1, respectively. In addition, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) optimization techniques, specifically Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), are used to predict a critical optical property of the sensor confinement loss (αloss). These predictions are derived from the same input structure parameters that are present in the full L32(25) design experiment. A genetic algorithm (GA) is then applied for optimization with the goal of maximizing the confinement loss. Our results highlight the effectiveness of training PSO artificial neural networks and demonstrate their ability to quickly and accurately predict results for unknown geometric dimensions, demonstrating their significant potential in this innovative context. The proposed sensor design can be used for various applications including pharmaceutical inspection and detection of low refractive index analytes.

Preventing local tumor recurrence while promoting bone tissue regeneration is an urgent need for osteosarcoma treatment. However, the therapeutic efficacy of traditional photosensitizers is limited, and they lack the ability to regenerate bone. Here, a piezo-photo nanoheterostructure is developed based on ultrasmall bismuth/strontium titanate nanocubes (denoted as Bi/SrTiO3), which achieve piezoelectric field-driven fast charge separation coupling with surface plasmon resonance to efficiently generate reactive oxygen species. These hybrid nanotherapeutics are integrated into injectable biopolymer hydrogels, which exhibit outstanding anticancer effects under the combined irradiation of NIR and ultrasound. In vivo studies using patient-derived xenograft models and tibial osteosarcoma models demonstrate that the hydrogels achieve tumor suppression with efficacy rates of 98.6 % and 67.6 % in the respective models. Furthermore, the hydrogel had good filling and retention capabilities in the bone defect region, which exerted bone repair therapeutic efficacy by polarizing and conveying electrical stimuli to the cells under mild ultrasound radiation. This study provides a comprehensive and clinically feasible strategy for the overall treatment and tissue regeneration of osteosarcoma.

Abstract Due to the benefits of the high sensitivity, real-time response, no labeling requirement, and good selectivity, fiber optic sensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) have gained popularity in biochemical sensing in recent years. The current research on such sensors is hot in enhancing sensitivity, improving detection accuracy, and achieving the detection of biochemical molecules. The goal of this work is to present a thorough overview of recent developments in the optical fiber SPR biosensor research. Firstly, it explores the basic principles and sensing structures of optical fiber SPR biosensors, focusing on four aspects. Subsequently, this paper introduces three fiber optic surface plasmon biosensors: SPR, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), and long-range surface plasmon resonance (LRSPR). Each concept is explained from the perspective of the basic principles of fiber optic SPR biosensors. Furthermore, a classification of fiber optic SPR biosensors in health monitoring, food safety, environmental monitoring, marine detection, and other applications is introduced and analyzed. Eventually, this paper summarizes the current research directions of SPR biosensors. Meanwhile, it provides a prospective outlook on how fiber optic SPR sensors will develop in the future.

The presence of nitrite, a prevalent contaminant in natural environments, presents a significant environmental and human health concern. Hence, it is imperative to develop a sensor with the ability to quantitatively detect nitrite. This study focuses on the design and development of i) probe 1: tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) and ii) probe 2: fiber optic tip-based plasmonic sensors utilizing ion-imprinted polymers. The concentration of nitrite was assessed at various levels using both sensing configurations. The outcomes indicated that the TFBGs-based sensor exhibited a sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD) of 0.469 nm/ln(μg/mL) and 0.142 μg/mL in the linear detection range of 0.5–50 μg/mL. The fiber optic tip-based sensor exhibited a sensitivity and LOD of 1.16 nm/ln(μg/mL) and 0.176 μg/mL within the 1–50 μg/mL linear detection range. The obtained sensing results reveal that the sensors presented in this study are able to accurately detect nitrite at various concentrations in a quantitative manner. Moreover, an assessment was conducted to examine the selectivity and reusability of the sensor individually, yielding satisfactory results.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensing has been widely investigated using various electrochemical methods, yet the challenge of finding an imaging technique capable of real-time, spatially resolved detection remains. Addressing this, we introduce a Prussian blue (PB) nanofilm-sensitized plasmonic electrochemical microscopy (PEM) technique that successfully visualizes the localized delivery of H2O2. The PB nanofilm was carefully characterized, and its sensing capability towards H2O2 was demonstrated in amperometric mode. Employing a precise micromanipulator system, we controlled a micropipette to create a localized concentration gradient on the sensor surface and monitored the gradient through the PB nanofilm-sensitized PEM. The accuracy of the obtained concentration values was further validated by numerical simulations based on finite-element methods. Our technique ensures dependable localized detection, and we anticipate that advancements in film uniformity will further improve the resolution. The potential applications of this technique are broad and significant, including the opportunity to investigate single-cell exocytosis with neurotransmitters like dopamine, thus offering a promising avenue for future biomedical research.

Precise measurement of the binding activity changes of therapeutic antibodies is important to determine the potential critical quality attributes (CQAs) in developability assessment at the early stage of antibody development. Here, we report a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based relative binding activity method, which incorporates both binding affinity and binding response and allows us to determine relative binding activity of antibodies with high accuracy and precision. We applied the SPR-based relative binding activity method in multiple forced degradation studies of antibody developability assessment. The current developability assessment strategy provided comprehensive, precise characterization of antibody binding activity in the stability studies, enabling us to perform correlation analysis and establish the structure–function relationship between relative binding activity and quality attributes. The impact of a given quality attribute on binding activity could be confidently determined without isolating antibody variants. We identified several potential CQAs, including Asp isomerization, Asn deamidation, and fragmentation. Some potential CQAs affected binding affinity of antibody and resulted in a reduction of binding activity. Certain potential CQAs impaired antibody binding to antigen and led to a loss of binding activity. A few potential CQAs could influence both binding affinity and binding response and cause a substantial decrease in antibody binding activity. Specifically, we identified low abundance Asn33 deamidation in the light chain complementarity-determining region as a potential CQA, in which all the stressed antibody samples showed Asn33 deamidation abundances ranging from 4.2% to 27.5% and a mild binding affinity change from 1.76 nM to 2.16 nM.

The article introducing an innovative exposed core SPR biosensor employing an asymmetrical elliptic air hole PCF known for remarkable sensitivity. Gold-plated fiber sensor detects changes in refractive index. This sensor effectively covers a RI scale of 1.28 to 1.42 for analytes, showcasing its versatility in simultaneous detection. Taking into account the RI change at the outer surface, attractive sensing implementations such as optimal wavelength sensitivity of 97,000 nm/RIU and optimal amplitude sensitivity of 529.20 RIU−1 are attained. Furthermore, with a resolution of 9.09 × 10−6 RIU, a figure in merit of 170 RIU−1, an FWHM of 570 nm, and a detection accuracy of 0.0166 nm−1, the suggested sensor is impressive. This suggested sensor finds application in monitoring sucrose solutions across a spectrum ranging from 0% to 45% chemical concentration over time. It has an ideal amplitude sensitivity of 530.95 RIU−1 and an ideal wavelength sensitivity of 10,000 nm/RIU for sucrose solutions at the 40% concentration level. Furthermore, the sensor shows an ideal wavelength sensitivity of 35,000 nm/RIU and an ideal amplitude sensitivity of 793.80 RIU−1 for the detection of 2-propanol. Nevertheless, beyond sucrose noticing auspicious sensing qualities by the suggested sensor its feasibility for impact fully identifying a range of biochemical and organic samples. As a result, the proposed sensor holds promise as an exemplary choice the realms in biomedical sensing, the detection of lower RI analyses as well as chemical analysis. Streamlining practical application, the sensor's structure incorporates eight elliptical air holes, uncomplicated readily manufactural with existing technologies.

A deep gold-coated sinusoidal grating is proposed as a transducer for label-free real-time biosensing, operating in a new configuration based on the optical switch effect, which produces complementary optical outputs enabling differential and referenced detection. Biosensing experiments are reported for the first time on this platform, using immunoassays involving biospecific pairs consisting of bovine serum albumin and its antibody, and human serum albumin and its antibody. Direct and sandwich immunoassays are demonstrated along with negative controls. A limit of detection of 6 pg/mm2 was obtained. A theoretical model correlating the variation in the differential referenced output optical signal with adlayer growth is presented and supports the experimental results. The proposed detection device operating in the optical switch configuration makes a promising case for point-of-care detection applications because the differential detection of two diffracted orders enables common noise suppression and robust interrogation.

Abstract To study the antibacterial efficacy of metallic Ag nanoparticle/titania (Ag‐NP)/TiO2 composite thin films against Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), COMP‐Agn with various amounts of Ag (10 mol% ≤ n ≤ 80 mol%) are fabricated on a quartz glass substrate at 600 °C using the molecular precursor method. The films are characterized by X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence, and UVvis techniques. The analysis reveals that the films are composed of metallic Ag‐NPs embedded in a mixture of anatase and rutile matrix, with a volumetric fraction of Ag ranging from 0.18 to 0.68. The antibacterial activity of the TiO2 thin film and COMP‐Agn are determined by disk diffusion and viable cell count methods. Neither pure TiO2 nor pure Ag films exhibit any discernible antibacterial under dark and visible light. The antibacterial of Ag content in composite films is observed to persist for a maximum increase of 70%. The model is proposed on the basis of photoexcited electron transfer from Ag NPs to the TiO2 conduction band of COMP‐Agn, which clarifies the main factors affecting the photoresponse and the excellent response to visible light via surface plasmon resonance.

Extracellular histone proteins in the blood indicate a heightened risk of morbidity after trauma or in major illnesses such as sepsis. We present the development of an aptasensor for histone detection with an extended gate field-effect transistor (EGFET) configuration, which benefits from low power consumption, rapid response, and compatibility with miniaturized gold electrodes. Histones have a high isoelectric point and charge density, which cause them to physically adsorb to non-specific elements of the sensor that have available electrostatic charges. To combat this, the sensing surface is formed with a thiol-modified, high-affinity and histone-specific RNA aptamer sequence and by co-immobilizing with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether thiol (PEG) as a blocking agent. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is used to analyze aptamer and PEG immobilization strategies, confirm histone binding, and calculate kinetic binding constants. Through comparison of different blocking agents and time-dependent preparation, the ideal equilibrium dissociation constant (KD) is estimated to be below 200 pM, which is the upper range of extracellular histone concentrations in critically ill patients with high mortality. The EGFET sensitivity of the optimized aptasensor is 6.65 mV/decade concentration change for histone H4 with a physiologically relevant 5 pM limit of detection. Selectivity tests with 100 nM bovine serum albumin (BSA) demonstrate a signal response that is 13-fold smaller than for histones. This EGFET aptasensor platform is suitable for future point-of-care monitoring of histone levels in critically ill patients, thus permitting the early detection of increased risk and the need for more aggressive interventional measures to prevent mortality.

Label-free techniques including Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and Biolayer Interferometry (BLI) are biophysical tools widely used to collect binding kinetics data of bimolecular interactions. To efficiently analyze SPR and BLI binding kinetics data, we have built a new high throughput analysis tool named the TitrationAnalysis. It can be used as a package in the Mathematica scripting environment and ultilize the non-linear curve-fitting module of Mathematica for its core function. This tool can fit the binding time course data and estimate association and dissociation rate constants (ka and kd respectively) for determining apparent dissociation constant (KD ) values. The high throughput fitting process is automatic, requires minimal knowledge on Mathematica scripting and can be applied to data from multiple label-free platforms. We demonstrate that the TitrationAnalysis is optimal to analyze antibody-antigen binding data acquired on Biacore T200 (SPR), Carterra LSA (SPR imaging) and ForteBio Octet Red384 (BLI) platforms. The ka , kd and KD values derived using TitrationAnalysis very closely matched the results from the commercial analysis software provided specifically for these instruments. Additionally, the TitrationAnalysis tool generates user-directed customizable results output that can be readily used in downstream Data Quality Control associated with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice operations. With the versatility in source of data input source and options of analysis result output, the TitrationAnalysis high throughput analysis tool offers investigators a powerful alternative in biomolecular interaction characterization.

Abstract As the population ages, the worldwide prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) as the most common dementia in the elderly is increasing dramatically. However, a long‐term challenge is to achieve rapid and accurate early diagnosis of AD by detecting hallmarks such as amyloid beta (Aβ42). Here, a multi‐channel microfluidic‐based plasmonic fiber‐optic biosensing platform is established for simultaneous detection and differentiation of multiple AD biomarkers. The platform is based on a gold‐coated, highly‐tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) and a custom‐developed microfluidics. TFBG excites a high‐density, narrow‐cladding‐mode spectral comb that overlaps with the broad absorption of surface plasmons for high‐precision interrogation, enabling ultrasensitive monitoring of analytes. In situ detection and in‐parallel discrimination of different forms of Aβ42 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are successfully demonstrated with a detection of limit in the range of ≈30–170 pg mL−1, which is one order of magnitude below the clinical cut‐off level in AD onset, providing high detection sensitivity for early diagnosis of AD. The integration of the TFBG sensor with multi‐channel microfluidics enables simultaneous detection of multiple biomarkers using sub‐µL sample volumes, as well as combining initial binding rate and real‐time response time to differentiate between multiple biomarkers in terms of binding kinetics. With the advantages of multi‐parameter, low consumption, and highly sensitive detection, the sensor represents an urgently needed potentials for large‐scale diagnosis of diseases at early stage.

The signal enhancement in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy is primarily contributed by hotspots generated through the surface plasmon resonance effect. Precise control of hotspot positions within nanostructures is of great significance in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and high spatial resolution imaging. However, predicting the positions of hotspots is challenging due to the small nanogaps and complex plasmonic interactions. In this study, we theoretically investigate the localized surface plasmonic properties of split ring nanostructure. The effects of variations in the inner radius, gap distance and thickness of the split ring on the hotspot distribution at the nanogaps are systematically analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element method. The results demonstrate that precise control over the positions and quantities of hotspots can be achieved by choosing the excitation wavelength and the gap size of the split rings. The calculated maximum Raman enhancement obtained at the hotspots can reach nine orders of magnitude. Our findings not only contribute to a deeper understanding of the SERS enhancement mechanism, but also provide theoretical insights for further development of surface-enhanced fluorescence, plasmonic sensors, and super-resolution imaging in the field of interface spectroscopy.

Summary: Mincle (macrophage-inducible C-type lectin, CLEC4E) is a C-type lectin immune-stimulatory receptor that can be targeted for inducing potent adjuvant effects. Mincle can recognize trehalose dimycolate and related glycolipids. Here, we present a protocol to identify the ligand binding mode of Mincle. We describe steps for preparing labeled Mincle ectodomain, data acquisition, and analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance experiments using non-detergent sulfobetaine-195. In recent years, researchers have made significant contributions to the field of Surface Plasmon Resonance sensors and their potential applications. SPR features include real-time monitoring of biomolecular interactions, label-free detection, high sensitivity, and the ability to analyze multiple samples at the same time. These characteristics make SPR biosensors a valuable tool in the pharmaceutical industry for ensuring drug efficacy and safety. Furthermore, SPR sensors have a reputation for providing quantitative and qualitative superior performance in real-time applications such as drug development, environmental monitoring, food safety, medical diagnostics, clinical diagnosis, biological investigations, and biomolecule interactions. This review will go over recent advances in SPR biosensors and how they can be used in drug discovery and development. We will also look at the challenges and opportunities of using SPR biosensors in the pharmaceutical industry.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used as next-generation light sources because of their various advantages. However, their luminous efficiency is remarkably low at the green-emission wavelength. The luminous efficiencies of InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs) significantly decrease with increasing indium content in the green wavelength region, mainly owing to the quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE). This green gap problem can be solved using QWs grown on semi-polar GaN substrates, such as the {11–22} planes, to reduce the QCSE. We propose that the use of surface plasmons (SPs) is a promising way to improve the light emission efficiency of light-emitting materials such as InGaN/GaN QWs. SP resonance increases the spontaneous emission rates of the excited states, causes a relative reduction in non-radiative relaxation, and ultimately increases the internal quantum efficiencies. In this study, the light emissions of InGaN/GaN QWs grown on polar and semi-polar GaN were investigated using micro-photoluminescence (PL). We successfully enhanced the light emission of semi-polar GaN via SP resonance. The PL peak intensities and wavelengths were mapped and compared to determine the underlying mechanisms. We also measured the emission lifetimes by time-resolved PL and interpreted the detailed mechanism of SP-enhanced emissions. It was found that SP resonances can control not only the emission efficiency but also the exciton dynamics, such as exciton localization effects, QCSE screening, and defect level saturation. We conclude that the green gap problem can be solved by SP-enhanced light emission in semipolar InGaN/GaN.

Sustainable development goal (SDG) 3.3 targets the eradication of epidemics such as AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB), hepatitis, and other communicable diseases. Effective early disease detection methods are essential for reaching this objective. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) influenced biosensors are now widely recognized as an effective method for detecting biomolecular interactions in real time, without the need for labeling. This study proposes a dual-channel photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-based SPR sensor for simultaneous detection of two different analytes. The sensor features channels Ch1 and Ch2, each with unique resonance peaks at different wavelengths corresponding to the refractive index (RI) of the sensing samples. The sensor’s structure is optimized using Finite Element Method (FEM), ensuring high sensitivity and a rapid response within the RI range of bio-analytes. RI data sourced from infectious diseases like Tuberculosis (TB) and Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) are utilized. Initially, Ch1 focuses on TB detection, and Ch2 on UTI detection, achieving optimal wavelength sensitivity of 10,000 nm/RIU and 8235.29 nm/RIU for Ch1 and Ch2, respectively. Notably, both channels excel at distinguishing samples of the same disease. When detecting TB, these channels exhibit distinct resonance wavelengths for heavily and mildly infected blood samples, demonstrating remarkable sensitivity of 32,000 nm/RIU. Similarly, for UTI detection, the biosensor achieves a sensitivity of 73,170 nm/RIU when distinguishing between gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The sensor’s performance is evaluated based on sensing resolution, sensitivity, and figure of merit values, demonstrating its potential for accurate and early diagnosis of TB and UTIs.

In this paper, a relatively simple and ultra-sensitive Photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is proposed for detecting different analyte refractive indices (RIs) ranging from 1.33 to 1.43 over a wide range of wavelength spectrum spanning $0.55~\mu $ m to $3.50~\mu $ m. The comprehensive finite-element simulations indicate that it is possible to achieve remarkable sensing performances such as wavelength sensitivity (WS) and figure of merit (FOM) as high as 123,000 nm/RIU and 683 RIU1, respectively, and extremely low value of wavelength resolution (WR) about $8.13\times 10^{-7}$ RIU. A novel artificial neural network (ANN) model is proposed which helps to accurately predict the RIs by carefully examining the simulation data. The mean square error (MSE) and prediction accuracy ( $R^{2}$ ) values for the ANN model are found about 0.0097 and 0.9987, respectively, indicating the high prediction capability of the proposed ANN model. Due to its exceptional sensitivity and precise detection capabilities, the proposed sensor has the potential to serve as a viable option for sensing analyte RI. Additionally, the sensor could be utilized for identifying cancerous cells and detecting urinary tract infections in humans.

The enhancement of photocatalytic reactivity through the internal electric field has received much attention. The combination of the piezoelectric effect and the photo-exiting process facilitates the segregation of the photogenerated carriers, thereby boosting the piezo-photocatalytic activity. We have constructed g-C3N4/Ag/ZnO tri-component composites; with various g-C3N4 precursors to achieve reliable photo/piezo-photocatalysis for H2 production and Rhodamine B (RhB) dye degradation. We observed that urea-based g-C3N4/Ag/ZnO (UCAZ) tri-components exhibit a superior H2 production rate of 1125.5 μmol h−1 g−1 under photocatalytic conditions. When piezoelectric-potential was introduced into the photocatalysis reaction via ultrasonic, the H2 rate increased dramatically to 1637.5 μmol h−1 g−1, which is approximately 145% greater than that light irradiation alone.Similarly, the catalytic decomposition ratio of Rhodamine B (RhB) under the coexistence of ultrasound and light, and degradation efficiency reached 99% in 120 min, which is higher than the value of (42%, 0.0031 min−1) for piezo-catalysis and (80%, 0.01 min−1) for photocatalysis condition alone. The rate constant under synergistic simulation reaches 0.021 min−1, which is 200% and 645% times higher than the sole light and ultrasonic illumination. Additionally, RhB degradation of all the tri-components was performed under solar light (Sunlight) and ultrasound irradiation, and efficiency reached 99.5% in 45 min with a rate constant of 0.06 min−1, which is 300% higher than the piezo-photocatalytic under LED source. The enhanced performance of the g-C3N4/Ag/ZnO tricomponent is attributed to the high specific surface area (168 m2 g−1) and synergetic effect of piezo catalysis and photocatalysis.

The work presents the results of green synthesis (biosynthesis) of silver nanoparticles using aqueous extracts of maple and oak leaves. The efficiency of the synthesis, size and shape of the formed nanoparticles were studied using UV-visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques. It was found that the formation of silver nanoparticles is accompanied by the appearance of a plasmon resonance band in the electronic spectra of aqueous extracts, the maximum of which depends on the concentration of silver nitrate and is in the range of ~420-429 nm in the spectra of maple leaves, and in the spectra of oak extracts there is a shift towards longer wavelengths ~425-435 nm, which correspond to the formation of nanoparticles of larger size. According to the dynamic light scattering data, the size of nanoparticles in the maple extracts is of about 60-68 nm and in the oak samples of ~107 nm. The differences in the size and shape of nanoparticles obtained in the maple and oak phytoextracts detected by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are explained by the different composition of bioactive substances in the plants involved in the reduction of silver ions and stabilization or modification of the surface of silver nanoparticles.

Abstract The authors theoretically designed a highly sensitive SPR biosensor with a hybrid structure using two‐dimensional nanomaterials (BP‐WS2). Using the transfer matrix method (TMM), the performance of the sensor in terms of reflection, sensitivity, detection accuracy, and quality factor is investigated, and by changing the structural parameters of the sensor, the obtained results are further analysed so that an optimal structure with optimal performance can be achieved. The sensor was optimised with four layers of BP and a single layer of WS2. This composite structure is placed on a 50 nm thick gold layer and concluded with a maximum sensitivity of 234 deg/RIU with a FOM of 26.53 RIU−1. This biosensor is designed by considering the advantages and characteristics of biosensors in their resistance and high electrical properties, as well as the ability to detect diseases quickly.

The graphene oxide (GO)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor has higher sensitivity, affinity, and selective ability than the traditional SPR biosensor. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of measuring first-trimester serum PAPP-A/PAPP-A2 ratio as a novel predictor of preeclampsia using the GO-SPR biosensor.Methods: This prospective case-control study of pregnant women was conducted at MacKay Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan between January 2018 and June 2020. The SPR angle shifts of first-trimester serum PAPP-A, PAPP-A2, and PAPP-A/PAPP-A2 ratio measured using the GO-SPR biosensor were compared between preeclampsia and control groups.Results: Serum samples from 185 pregnant women were collected, of whom 30 had preeclampsia (5 early-onset; 25 late-onset). The response time between the antibody-antigen association and dissociation only took about 200 seconds. The SPR angle shift of PAPP-A in the preeclampsia group was significantly smaller than that in the control group (median (interquartile range): 5.33 (4.55) versus 6.89 (4.10) millidegrees (mDeg), P = 0.008). Conversely, the SPR angle shift of PAPP-A2 in the preeclampsia group was significantly larger than that in the control group (5.70 (3.81) versus 3.63 (2.38) mDeg, P < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed a cut-off PAPP-A/PAPP-A2 ratio to predict all preeclampsia of ≤ 0.76, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.79 (95% CI 0.73– 0.85, P < 0.001). Sub-group analysis revealed a cut-off PAPP-A/PAPP-A2 ratio to predict early-onset preeclampsia of ≤ 0.53 (AUC 0.99, 95% CI 0.96– 1.00, P < 0.001), and ≤ 0.73 to predict late-onset preeclampsia (AUC 0.75, 95% CI 0.68– 0.81, P < 0.001).Conclusion: Measuring first-trimester serum PAPP-A/PAPP-A2 ratio using the GO-SPR biosensor could be a valuable method for early prediction of preeclampsia. A terahertz photonic crystal fiber with two sensing channels was designed. Graphene coated on the micro-grooves in the cladding was used as plasma material to introduce tunability. The dispersion relation, mode coupling, and sensing characteristics of the fiber were studied using the finite element method. Ultrahigh sensitivity of 2.014 THz/RIU and 0.734 GHz/°C were obtained for analytes with refractive index in the range of 1.33 to 1.4 and environment temperature in the range of 10–60 °C, respectively. Refractive index resolution can reach the order of 10−5. The dual parameter simultaneous detection, dynamic tunable characteristics, and working in the low-frequency range of terahertz enable the designed photonic crystal fiber to have application prospects in the field of biosensing.

Fiber SPR biosensors have low sensitivity and accuracy in detecting biomolecules. In this study, the TRIZ is applied to molecules and optimization. By defining the prototype system, clarifying the components and interacting objects, and adopting a functional model analysis and causal analysis, we deeply explored the key points and root causes of leakage and used a variety of tools, such as technological contradiction, object-field analysis, the HOW-TO model and knowledge effect library, physical contradiction, and the villain method, to come up with different solutions. A novel multimode–single-mode–multimode fiber SPR sensor based on the structure of gold (Au)–molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)–gold nanoparticles was designed and manufactured by using the TRIZ systematically for the first time. Under the effective guidance of the TRIZ, the sensitivity of the novel sensor is significantly enhanced after the optimization and experimental verification. The new sensor provides an effective reduction in the cost of detection and production and at the same time has excellent stability, ease of preparation, and high reproducibility, which is of significant value and significance for practical applications.

A novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) refractive index (RI) sensor based on the D-type dual-mode photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed. The sensor employs a side-polished few-mode PCF that facilitates the transmission of the fundamental and second-order modes, with an integrated microfluidic channel positioned directly above the fiber core. This design minimizes the distance to the analyte and maximizes the interaction between the optical field and the analyte, thereby enhancing the SPR effect and resonance loss for improved sensing performance. Au-TiO2 dual-layer material was coated on the surface of a microfluidic channel to enhance the penetration depth of the core evanescent field and tune the resonance wavelength to the near-infrared band, meeting the special needs of chemical and biomedical detection fields. The finite element method was utilized to systematically investigate the coupling characteristics between various modes and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes, as well as the impact of structural parameters on the sensor performance. The results indicate that the LP11b_y mode exhibits greater wavelength sensitivity than the HE11_y mode, with a maximum sensitivity of 33,000 nm/RIU and an average sensitivity of 8272.7 nm/RIU in the RI sensing range of 1.25–1.36, which is higher than the maximum sensitivity of 16,000 nm/RIU and average sensitivity of 5666.7 nm/RIU for the HE11b_y mode. It is believed that the proposed PCF-SPR sensor features both high sensitivity and high resolution, which will become a critical device for wide RI detection in mid-infrared fields.

In this manuscript, we present in detail the design and implementation of the hardware and software to produce a standalone wireless sensor node, called SensorQ system, for the detection of a toxic chemical agent. The proposed wireless sensor node prototype is composed of a micro-controller unit (MCU), a radio frequency (RF) transceiver, a dual-band antenna, a rechargeable battery, a voltage regulator, and four integrated sensing devices, all of them integrated in a package with final dimensions and weight of 200 × 80 × 60 mm and 0.422 kg, respectively. The proposed SensorQ prototype operates using the Long-Range (LoRa) wireless communication protocol at 2.4 GHz, with a sensor head implemented on a hetero-core fiber optic structure supporting the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon with a sensing section (L = 10 mm) coated with titanium/gold/titanium and a chemically sensitive material (zinc oxide) for the detection of Di-Methyl Methyl Phosphonate (DMMP) vapor in the air, a simulant of the toxic nerve agent Sarin. The transmitted spectra with respect to different concentrations of DMMP vapor in the air were recorded, and then the transmitted power for these concentrations was calculated at a wavelength of 750 nm. The experimental results indicate the feasibility of detecting DMMP vapor in air using the proposed optical sensor head, with DMMP concentrations in the air of 10, 150, and 150 ppm in this proof of concept. We expect that the sensor and wireless sensor node presented herein are promising candidates for integration into a wireless sensor network (WSN) for chemical warfare agent (CWA) detection and contaminated site monitoring without exposure of armed forces.

Abstract Copper (Cu) nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on titanium(IV) oxide (TiO2) exhibit an extinction at about λ=580 nm because of surface plasmon resonance (SPR); however, they rapidly lose their its SPR when exposed to air. In order to stabilize the Cu NPs, a multi‐step photodeposition method was used to introduce chromium, which resulted in successful synthesis of a Cr2O3/Cu/TiO2 sample that exhibited extinction even when exposed to air. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV‐vis spectroscopy were utilized to analyze the Cu/TiO2 and Cr2O3/Cu/TiO2 samples with a focus on SPR of the nanoparticles and state of the Cu species. The prepared Cr2O3/Cu/TiO2 samples acted as plasmonic photocatalysts in oxidation of 2‐propanol under aerated conditions and visible light irradiation. Expandability of the Cr2O3/Cu/TiO2 plasmonic photocatalyst was also investigated, and the results suggested the potential of a Cu‐based plasmonic photocatalyst working under irradiation of visible light.

Olfactory receptors (ORs), the largest family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), are ectopically expressed in cancer cells and are involved in cellular physiological processes, but their function as anticancer targets is still potential. OR2AT4 is expressed in leukemia cells, influencing the proliferation and apoptosis, yet the limited number of known OR2AT4 agonists makes it challenging to fully generalize the receptor's function. In this study, we aimed to identify new ligands for OR2AT4 and to investigate their functions and mechanisms in K562 leukemia cells. After producing the recombinant OR2AT4 protein, immobilizing it on a surface plasmon resonance chip, and conducting screening to confirm binding activity using 258 chemicals, five novel OR2AT4 ligands were discovered. As a result of examining changes in intracellular calcium by five ligands in OR2AT4-expressing cells and K562 cells, (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) was identified as an OR2AT4 agonist in both cells. EGCG reduced the viability of K562 cells and induced apoptosis in K562 cells. EGCG increased the expression of cleaved caspase 3/8 and had no effect on the expression of Bax and Bcl-2, indicating that it induced apoptosis through the extrinsic pathway. Additionally, the initiation of the extrinsic apoptosis pathway in EGCG-induced K562 cells was due to the activation of OR2AT4, using an OR2AT4 antagonist. This study highlights the potential of EGCG as an anti-cancer agent against leukemia and OR2AT4 as a target, making it a new anti-cancer drug.

Abstract Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have unique optical properties such as transverse and longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (T‐ and L‐LSPR). As the L‐LSPR absorption depends on the angle of the AuNRs to incident light and polarization, orientational control of AuNRs is a crucial issue. In spite of various techniques to control AuNR orientation, dynamic orientation tuning on a solid substrate remains challenging. Herein, dynamic changes are demonstrated in AuNR orientation in the anionic polymer (DNA) brushes via control of their thickness by salt concentration. AuNRs vertically align toward the substrates when their thickness exceeds the AuNR length. Once their thickness becomes shorter than the AuNR length, the attached AuNRs begin to tilt. The tilt reaches a maximum level close to horizontal when the thickness decreases to half that of the AuNR length. The dynamic control between the vertical (uniform) and tilted (random) orientation of the AuNRs showed not only absorption intensity changes in L‐LSPR but also the switching of side‐by‐side plasmon coupling. The polymer brush‐based system affords a novel platform for the stimuli‐responsive control of AuNR orientation on the substrates via changes in the thickness of polymer brushes for actively tunable plasmonic substrates.

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus in elderly people is considered a form of glymphopathy caused by malfunction of the waste clearance pathway, called the glymphatic system. Tau is a representative waste material similar to amyloid-β. During neurodegeneration, lipocalin-type prostaglandin D synthase (L-PGDS), a major cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein, is reported to act as a chaperone that prevents the neurotoxic aggregation of amyloid-β. L-PGDS is also a CSF biomarker in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus and significantly correlates with tau concentration, age, and age-related brain white matter changes detected by magnetic resonance imaging. To investigate this glymphopathy, we aimed to analyze white matter changes and contributing factors in vivo and their interactions ex vivo. Cerebrospinal tap tests were performed in 60 patients referred for symptomatic ventriculomegaly. Patients were evaluated using an idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus grading scale, mini-mental state examination, frontal assessment battery, and timed up-and-go test. The typical morphological features of high convexity tightness and ventriculomegaly were measured using the callosal angle and Evans index, and parenchymal white matter properties were evaluated with diffusion tensor imaging followed by tract-based spatial statistics. Levels of CSF biomarkers, including tau, amyloid-β, and L-PGDS, were determined by ELISA, and their interaction, and localization were determined using immunoprecipitation and immunohistochemical analyses. Tract-based spatial statistics for fractional anisotropy revealed clusters that positively correlated with mini-mental state examination, frontal assessment battery, and callosal angle, and clusters that negatively correlated with age, disease duration, idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus grading scale, Evans index, and L-PGDS. Other parameters also indicated clusters that correlated with symptoms, microstructural white matter changes, and L-PGDS. Tau co-precipitated with L-PGDS, and colocalization was confirmed in postmortem specimens of neurodegenerative disease obtained from the human Brain Bank. Our study supports the diagnostic value of L-PGDS as a surrogate marker for white matter integrity in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. These results increase our understanding of the molecular players in the glymphatic system. Moreover, this study indicates the potential utility of enhancing endogenous protective factors to maintain brain homeostasis.

Abstract Materials that intrinsically exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible region have been predominantly researched on nanoparticles (NPs) composed of coinage metals, namely Au, Ag, and Cu. Here, as a coinage metal‐free intermetallic NPs, colloidal PtIn2 NPs with a C1 (CaF2‐type) crystal structure are synthesized by the liquid phase method, which evidently exhibit LSPR at wavelengths similar to face‐centered cubic (fcc)‐Au NPs. Computational simulations pointed out differences in the electronic structure and photo‐excited electron dynamics between C1‐PtIn2 and fcc‐Au NPs; reduces interband transition and stronger screening with smaller number of bound d‐electrons compare with fcc‐Au are unique origins of the visible plasmonic nature of C1‐PtIn2 NPs. These results strongly indicate that the intermetallic NPs are expected to address the development of alternative plasmonic materials by tuning their crystal structure and composition.

An ultra-sensitive phase plasmonic sensor combined with weak value amplification is proposed for the detection of IgG, as a model analyte. Phase detection is accomplished by self-interference between the p-polarization and the s-polarization of the light. With the principles of weak value amplification, a phase compensator is used to modulate the coupling strength and enhance the refractive index sensitivity of the system. On a simple Au-coated prism-coupled surface plasmon resonance (SPR) structure, the scheme, called WMSPR, achieves a refractive index sensitivity of 4.737 × 104 nm/RIU, which is about three times higher than that of the conventional phase-based approach. The proposed WMSPR biosensor gives great characteristics with a high resolution of 6.333 × 10−8 RIU and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 5.3 ng/mL. The results yield a great scope to promote the optimization of other SPR biosensors for high sensitivity.

Lichen is one of the most abundant non-vascular biomasses; however, a systematic study on the application of biomass in nanomaterial synthesis is very limited. In this study, an aqueous lichen extract was obtained from Hypotrachyna cirrhata, one of the most abundant Himalayan lichen biomasses, using a simple cold percolation method. The effects of extract-to-silver nitrate mixing ratio, pH and waiting time on the growth and stability of nanoparticles were systematically explored. The rate constant for bio-reduction was found to be 5.3 × 10−3 min−1. Transmission electron microscopy showed a narrow particle size distribution with a mean particle size of 11.1 ± 3.6 nm (n = 200). The X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction techniques confirmed the formation of cubic crystals. The synthesized colloidal solution showed excellent response to Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions in spiked water samples. The limit of detection and calibration sensitivity for Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions were found to be 1 and 5 mg l−1 and 2.9 × 10−3 and 1.6 × 10−3 units ppm−1, respectively. These findings suggested that spherical silver nanoparticles with a narrow particle size distribution can be synthesized on a laboratory scale using an aqueous H. cirrhata lichen extract, and the colloidal solution can be used for the detection of selected heavy metals in water samples.

Here, a spectrally selective solar absorber is explored and an ultra‐broadband solar absorber is proposed based on pyramidal structure. The finite‐difference in time domain (FDTD) software is used to model the spectral characteristics and magnetic absorption patterns of this absorber. The emissivity of the absorber is less than 20% in the far‐infrared band over 6000 nm, showing good selectivity, and the total solar thermal conversion efficiency is very close to that of an ideal truncated selective solar absorber by analyzing the performance of our proposed absorber‐related indexes. By studying the high absorption band of the absorber, the selectivity can be better investigated in depth. Here, 200–4000 nm is chosed as the depth study band. The absorber possesses an ultra‐wide bandwidth of 3554 nm and an average absorption of over 97.4%, and in the 200–3754 nm band, the absorber has an ultra‐high absorption rate of more than 98.3%, and its thermal emitter has a high emission efficiency of 94% at a temperature of 1000 K. Notably, the weighted average absorption in the 280–4000 nm band at AM1.5 is as high as 98.86%, with a loss of only 1.14%. The ultra‐broadband absorption property of this solar absorber is mainly a joint effect of surface plasmon resonance coupling.

The combination of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) incorporated ZnO/rGO heterostructures is unique for sunlight-driven photocatalysis (SPC). Here, hydrothermally synthesized pristine ZnO nanostructures (NSs), ZnO/rGO binary nanocomposites (BNCs) and ZnO/rGO/Au ternary nanocomposites (TNCs) of bandgap (Eg) values 3.56 eV, 3.37 eV and 3.17 eV, respectively are reported. These NSs are analyzed optically, structurally and morphologically via UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and SEM techniques, respectively. The SPC of methylene blue (MB) organic dye was considered using all three samples. The slow charge transfer over grain boundaries of ZnO results in the prohibition of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, exhibiting low photodegradation efficiency (87%). However, in BNCs the creation of alternative pathway of the carriers due to low work function level of rGO as compared to ZnO enhances the charge separation with an increased photocatalytic efficiency (92%). In contrast, TNCs show rather fast photodegradation efficiency (96%) as the photoexcited electrons on Au NPs surface migrate to the CB of ZnO because of the SPR stimulation of Au. These electrons easily shift to the conductive rGO layers and react with oxygen species (O2) producing superoxide radicals (•O2–). Thus, TNCs sample has appeared to be auspicious candidate for the photodegradation of organic pollutants in untreated water.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) represent a cornerstone of modern therapeutic strategies, targeting a wide array of diseases with unprecedented specificity. Developing and validating bioanalytical methods for mAbs are critical to ensuring their efficacy, safety, and regulatory compliance. This review discusses the recent advances in bioanalytical technologies and the persistent challenges faced in the field. Significant progress has been made in chromatographic techniques, mass spectrometry, and capillary electrophoresis, enhancing the analysis of mAbs in terms of resolution, sensitivity, and throughput. Innovations such as high-resolution mass spectrometry and automated capillary electrophoresis systems have transformed the mAb characterization landscape. However, challenges remain, primarily due to the complex nature of mAbs, which necessitates the development of susceptible and specific methods to determine their pharmacokinetic profiles and detect low-abundance impurities accurately. Moreover, the stringent and evolving regulatory requirements demand robust and reproducible analytical methods. This review emphasizes the need for continuous technological innovation and adaptation to address these challenges effectively.

Abstract The traditional method of monitoring the oxidation and reduction of biomedical materials usually relies on electrochemical (EC) measurement techniques. Here, we demonstrate a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) method to monitor the oxidation process. Using levodopa L-dopa as the target analyte, a nanohole sensing plate is embedded in the EC electrode to enhance the oxidation signal and generate SPR. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement was first conducted to understand the baseline of EC response of L-Dopa. Then, the redox reactions were simultaneously monitored through SPR measurements during the CV voltage scan. The results showed that the limit of detection using traditional CV reached 1.47 μM while using EC-SPR, the limit of detection improved to 1.23 μM. Most importantly, we found a strong correlation between CV current profiles and the SPR reflection spectra. Our results facilitate detecting electrochemical reactions using an optical probing method.
