The rational design of composites based on graphene/metal oxides is one of the pillars for advancing their application in various practical fields, particularly gas sensing. In this study, a uniform distribution of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) through the graphene layer was achieved, taking advantage of amine functionalization. The beneficial effect of amine groups on the arrangement of ZnO NPs and the efficiency of their immobilization was revealed by core-level spectroscopy, pointing out strong ionic bonding between the aminated graphene (AmG) and ZnO. The stability of the resulting Am-ZnO nanocomposite was confirmed by demonstrating that its morphology remains unchanged even after prolonged heating up to 350 °C, as observed by electron microscopy. On-chip multisensor arrays composed of both AmG and Am-ZnO were fabricated and thoroughly tested, showing almost tenfold enhancement of the chemiresistive response upon decorating the AmG layer with ZnO nanoparticles, due to the formation of p-n heterojunctions. Operating at room temperature, the fabricated multisensor chips exhibited high robustness and a detection limit of 3.6 ppm and 5.1 ppm for ammonia and ethanol, respectively. Precise identification of the studied analytes was achieved by employing the pattern recognition technique based on linear discriminant analysis to process the acquired multisensor response.

The facile synthesis of biografted 2D derivatives complemented by a nuanced understanding of their properties are keystones for advancements in biosensing technologies. Herein, we thoroughly examine the feasibility of aminated graphene as a platform for the covalent conjugation of monoclonal antibodies towards human IgG immunoglobulins. Applying core-level spectroscopy methods, namely X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies, we delve into the chemistry and its effect on the electronic structure of the aminated graphene prior to and after the immobilization of monoclonal antibodies. Furthermore, the alterations in the morphology of the graphene layers upon the applied derivatization protocols are assessed by electron microscopy techniques. Chemiresistive biosensors composed of the aerosol-deposited layers of the aminated graphene with the conjugated antibodies are fabricated and tested, demonstrating a selective response towards IgM immunoglobulins with a limit of detection as low as 10 pg/mL. Taken together, these findings advance and outline graphene derivatives’ application in biosensing as well as hint at the features of the alterations of graphene morphology and physics upon its functionalization and further covalent grafting by biomolecules.

Graphene derivatization to either engineer its physical and chemical properties or overcome the problem of the facile synthesis of nanographenes is a subject of significant attention in the nanomaterials research community. In this paper, we propose a facile and scalable method for the synthesis of thiolated graphene via a two-step liquid-phase treatment of graphene oxide (GO). Employing the core-level methods, the introduction of up to 5.1 at.% of thiols is indicated with the simultaneous rise of the C/O ratio to 16.8. The crumpling of the graphene layer upon thiolation without its perforation is pointed out by microscopic and Raman studies. The conductance of thiolated graphene is revealed to be driven by the Mott hopping mechanism with the sheet resistance values of 2.15 kΩ/sq and dependable on the environment. The preliminary results on the chemiresistive effect of these films upon exposure to ethanol vapors in the mix with dry and humid air are shown. Finally, the work function value and valence band structure of thiolated graphene are analyzed. Taken together, the developed method and findings of the morphology and physics of the thiolated graphene guide the further application of this derivative in energy storage, sensing devices, and smart materials.

Physical modeling is essential for developing the theory of concentrated, tornado-like vortices. Physical modeling data are crucial for interpreting real tornado field measurements and mathematical modeling data. This review focuses on describing and analyzing the results of a physical modeling of the structure and dynamics of tornado-like vortices, which are laboratory analogs of the vortex structures observed in nature (such as “dust devils” and air tornadoes). This review discusses studies on various types of concentrated vortices in laboratory conditions: (i) wall-bounded, stationary, and tornado-like vortices, (ii) wall-free, quasi-stationary, and tornado-like vortices, and (iii) wall-free, non-stationary, and tornado-like vortices. In our opinion, further progress in the development of the theory of non-stationary concentrated tornado-like vortices will determine the possibility of setting up the following studies: conducting experiments in order to study the mechanisms of vortex generation near the surface, determining the factors contributing to the stabilization (strengthening) and destabilization (weakening) of the generated vortices, and to find methods and means of controlling vortices.

Mathematical modeling is the most important tool for constructing theories of different kinds of two-phase flows. This review is devoted to the analysis of the introduction of mathematical modeling to two-phase flows, where solid particles mainly serve as the dispersed phase. The main problems and features of the study of gas-solid two-phase flows are included. The main characteristics of gas flows with solid particles are discussed, and the classification of two-phase flows is developed based on these characteristics. The Lagrangian and Euler approaches to modeling the motion of a dispersed phase (particles) are described. A great deal of attention is paid to the consideration of numerical simulation methods that provide descriptions of turbulent gas flow at different hierarchical levels (RANS, LES, and DNS), different levels of description of interphase interactions (one-way coupling (OWC), two-way coupling (TWC), and four-way coupling (FWC)), and different levels of interface resolution (partial-point (PP) and particle-resolved (PR)). Examples of studies carried out on the basis of the identified approaches are excluded, and they are also excluded for the mathematical modeling of various classes of gas-solid two-phase flows.

Mathematical modeling is the most important tool for constructing the theory of concentrated tornado-like vortices. A review and analysis of computational and theoretical works devoted to the study of the generation and dynamics of air tornado-like vortices has been conducted. Models with various levels of complexity are considered: a simple analytical model based on the Bernoulli equation, an analytical model based on the vorticity equation, a new class of analytical solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations for a wide class of vortex flows, and thermodynamic models. The approaches developed to date for the numerical simulation of tornado-like vortices are described and analyzed. Considerable attention is paid to developed approaches that take into account the two-phase nature of tornadoes. The final part is devoted to the analysis of modern ideas about the tornado, concerning its structure and dynamics (up to the breakup) and the conditions for its occurrence (tornadogenesis). Mathematical modeling data are necessary for interpreting the available field measurements while also serving as the basis for planning the physical modeling of tornado-like vortices in the laboratory.

This paper provides an overview of modern research on magnetoplasma methods of influencing gas-dynamic and plasma flows. The main physical mechanisms that control the interaction of plasma discharges with gaseous moving media are indicated. The ways of organizing pulsed energy input, characteristic of plasma aerodynamics, are briefly described: linearly stabilized discharge, magnetoplasma compressor, capillary discharge, laser-microwave action, electron beam action, nanosecond surface barrier discharges, pulsed spark discharges, and nanosecond optical discharges. A description of the physical mechanism of heating the gas-plasma flow at high values of electric fields, which are realized in high-current and nanosecond (ultrafast heating) electric discharges, is performed. Methods for magnetoplasma control of the configuration and gas-dynamic characteristics of shock waves arising in front of promising and advanced aircraft (AA) are described. Approaches to the control of quasi-stationary separated flows, laminar–turbulent transitions, and static and dynamic separation of the boundary layer (for large PA angles of attack) are presented.

A review of theoretical and experimental studies in the field of compression and heating of a plasma target in an external magnetic field, which has recently been called magneto-inertial fusion (MIF), has been carried out. MIF is a concept of magnetically driven inertial fusion that involves the magnetization of fuel, laser pre-heating, and magnetic implosion to create fusion conditions. An analysis of the current state of work on the implosion of magnetized targets and the effect of an external magnetic field on the main plasma parameters and system characteristics is presented. Questions regarding the numerical simulation of experiments on the magnetic-inertial confinement of plasma are touched upon. Particular attention is paid to two promising areas of MIF—with plasma jets and with a laser driver (laser beams).

The main purpose of this article is to study the features of the structure and spectral brightness characteristics of pulsed emitting discharges of the magneto plasma compressor type in dense gases over a wide range of energy–power parameters. A numerical simulation of plasma dynamic magneto plasma compressor discharge in gases is carried out. Different quasi-stationary regimes have been studied and the main characteristics have been estimated.

A numerical model to calculate the heat transfer and resistance coefficients near the bodies of complex geometric shapes moving at high velocity is formulated. The processes of heat and mass transfer and flow around aircraft elements are considered. An algorithm for calculating heat fluxes and the heat transfer coefficient is proposed. The developed numerical technique can give an idea of the essential features of the flow, heat transfer at the end keels of the wings, and integral layouts of high-speed aircraft. An approximate mathematical model for calculating the heat transfer processes and resistance coefficients near the bodies of complex geometric shapes moving at high speed in the Earth’s atmosphere is formulated. The calculated results for convective heat transfer and friction coefficients for the X-33 and X-43 vehicles are obtained.

This paper considers the problem associated with the numerical simulation of the interaction between the cocurrent stream occurring near a monoblock moving in the gas medium and solid fuel combustion products flowing from a solid fuel rocket engine (SFRE). The peculiarity of the approach used is the description of gas-dynamic processes inside the combustion chamber, in the nozzle block, and the down jet based on a single calculation methodology. In the formulated numerical methodology, the calculation of gas-dynamic parameters is based on the solution of unsteady Navier–Stokes equations and the application of a hybrid computational grid. A hybrid block-structured computational grid makes it possible to calculate gas flow near bodies of complex geometric shapes. The simulation of the main phase of interaction, corresponding to the stationary mode of rocket flight in the Earth’s atmosphere, has been carried out. A conjugated simulation of the internal ballistics of SFRE and interaction of combustion products jets is conducted.

A mathematical model is formulated, and a numerical study of magneto-plasma compressor (MPC) discharges in gases for a wide range of changes in the main electrical parameters and the characteristics of the surrounding gas environment is carried out. The performed calculations showed, depending on the role of one or another heating mode (Ohmic, transient, and plasma dynamic), three different types of quasi-stationary spatial distributions of plasma parameters, which can be used to judge the features of the emerging structures and the dynamics of plasma propagation, and, therefore, to speak about the modes of discharge. The features of the radiation plasma dynamic structures and the change in the main parameters of the plasma of an MPC discharge in the transient regime are considered.
