BackgroundAnesthesia providers face numerous occupational hazards, including exposure to anesthesia gases, which can lead to fatigue. These professionals face challenges such as night shifts, OR stress, limited mobility and sunlight access, high workload, inadequate rest breaks. Health-related sociodemographic variables, such as smoking, sleep patterns, and obesity. Our research aims to explore various risk factors associated with fatigue among operating theatre workers including sleep quality.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted on 227 of operating room healthcare professionals from five tertiary hospitals in Saudi Arabia, for a period of 6 months, between January 1, 2023 to June 1, 2023. The study used a five-point Likert scale sheet and the FSS “fatigue severity scale” to analyze and measure fatigue and sleep quality. The questionnaire included all socio-demographic variables, work conditions, and fatigue severity scale items.ResultsThe major findings revealed a significant correlation between fatigue severity scores and exposure to anesthesia gases. Socio-demographic variables such as smoking have showed major relevance to fatigue in the sample size, as (76.6%) of the participants that answered as regular smokers have showed result of positive correlation to fatigue and with a significant of (0.034). Out of the total sample, 76.1% were exposed to anesthesia gases once daily, showing a positive association with fatigue severity scores. Work-related factors like job experience and position also had a lower association with fatigue severity. p (0.031) Univariate logistic regression p (0.035).ConclusionThe study found that the work-related conditions like workload on Anesthesia technicians and technologists over 44 h per week and gas exposure is directly linked to fatigue severity and sleep quality so is the socio-demographic considerations. With poor sleep quality in younger staff which is documented in the study result a large-scale prospective analysis to understand the factors affecting OR staff’s sleep quality and fatigue severity and what can be done to regulate working hours and break time and incorporate naps in to enhance patient safety and well-being for anesthesia providers in Saudi Arabia.

BackgroundEvidence-based practice (EBP) plays a crucial role in improving the quality of healthcare services by ensuring the delivery of the highest and safest level of patient care since EBP helps in justifying treatment choices to patients. Studies that examine the levels of EBP knowledge, attitudes toward EBP, and use of the use of EBP within anesthetic teams' practice are lacking, hence it is necessary to explore this.AimTo evaluate anesthesia teams' levels of knowledge, attitude toward and use of the evidence-based practice in a local hospital in Saudi Arabia.MethodIn one hospital, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using a convenience sampling technique using a validated questionnaire instrument called the Evidence-Based Practice EBP Questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed through an online method to 173 participants. Descriptive and inferential statistics Tests were utilized to analyse the retrieved data using the SPSS program.ResultsOne hundred and forty questionnaires were completed and returned, yielding a response rate of 80.9%. Overall, anesthesia teams showed a high positive attitude toward EBP but low levels of knowledge and use of EBP. Participants with higher levels of education and/or work experience exhibited significantly higher levels of knowledge and use of EBP than those who had lower education levels and/or work experience. Also, higher levels of education and/or work experience exhibited a significant positive association toward a higher level of knowledge and use of EBP. However, attitude levels toward EBP did not exhibit either significant or associated. Physicians showed significantly higher knowledge and use of EBP than non-physicians. Lack of knowledge and lack of time due to workload were the leading barriers encountered by anesthesia teams ATs.ConclusionEducation level, work experience and job position affect the knowledge, attitude, and use of EBP. Continuous education and minimizing barriers are recommended to enhance the knowledge, attitude, and use of EBP among anesthesia teams in Saudi Arabia.

Smoking is defined as burning dry tobacco leaves and inhaling smoke from the burn. This process may be done using different forms of tobbaco products, including cigarettes (Cigars, Little Cigars, Cigarillos), electronic cigarettes, and hookah (shisha). Smoking can give rise to lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and has been proven to be the underlying cause in 84% of deaths in lung cancer and 83% mortalities in COPD. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of tobacco smoking among male students of the Majmaah University, Saudi Arabia. This cross-sectional study was performed from January to February 2020 on among medical students of Majmaah University, Saudi Arabia. A pretested questionnaire was used to collect data while the SPSS was used for data analysis. From 256 male medical students, only 113 responded to the questionnaire. The prevalence of smoking was found to be 19.5% (n=22) with most smoked cigarettes (50%). Most smokers (50 %) were in the lowest age group, 19-21 years. There was an increase in smoking with an increase in income. Of the 22 respondents who smoked, 10 started smoking when they were 14 to 17 years old. In conclusion, the study shows a low prevalence of smoking among male medical students in the College of Medicine of Majmaah University. Most smokers consume cigarettes, and the majority are not considering quitting.
