Abstract Background To report a case of IgG4-related pachymeningitis presenting with cystic lesions mimicking neurocysticercosis. Case presentation A 40-year-old female patient with tetraparesis, dysphagia and dysphonia was evaluated with clinical examination, magnetic resonance imaging, and meningeal biopsy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed diffuse pachymeningeal enhancement involving the cranial, cervical, thoracic, and lumbar segments with spinal cord compression and cystic lesions. CSF immunology was initially positive for cysticercus cellulosae. After disease progression a meningeal biopsy was compatible with IgG4 related disease. The patient had partial response to rituximab and needed multiple surgical procedures for spinal cord decompression and CSF shunting. Conclusions This case highlights the possibility of IgG4-related disease in patients with diffuse pachymeningitis causing spinal cord compression, even with cystic lesions on MRI. Diagnosis of IgG4-related pachymeningitis is paramount due to the possibility of treatment response to immunotherapy, particularly to anti-CD20 agents.

Abstract Background The EAT-Lancet diet is a diet aimed at promoting population and planetary health from the perspective of sustainable diets in terms of environmental and health aspects. This study aimed to assess the association between adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet and cardiometabolic risk factors among adults and elderly individuals in a capital city in the northeastern region of Brazil. Methods This is an analytical cross-sectional observational study from a population-based sample conducted between 2019 and 2020, involving 398 non-institutionalized adults and elderly people, of both sexes from “Brazilian Usual Consumption Assessment” study (Brazuca-Natal). There was a 38% response rate due to the suspension of data collection due to the covid-19 pandemic, but According to the comparative analysis of socioeconomic and demographic variables between the surveyed and non-surveyed sectors, losses were found to be random (p = 0.135, Little’s MCAR test). Socioeconomic and lifestyle data, anthropometric measurements, and dietary consumption were collected. We used the Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) and the Cardiovascular Health Diet Index (CHDI) for cardiovascular health to assess adherence to the diet’s sustainability. The evaluated cardiometabolic parameters included fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements. We also assessed the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, and dyslipidemia. For the data analyses, sample weights and the effect of the study design were taken into account. Pearson’s chi-square test was used to evaluate the statistical significance of frequencies. Multiple linear regression models assessed the associations between PHDI and CHDI and its components and the cardiometabolic parameters. Results The mean PHDI was 29.4 (95% CI 28.04:30.81), on a total score ranging from 0 to 150 points and the mean CHDI was 32.63 (95% CI 31.50:33.78), on a total score ranging from 0 to 110 points. Abstract We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central–eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia.

Introduction: Dengue is the most fatal virus disease spread by mosquito bites and Aedes aegypti is the main transmitting agent. It is an endemic disease in the tropical and subtropical regions, currently affecting more than 100 countries. Although most patients present mild forms of the disease, a considerable proportion of individuals has severe alterations in the blood count. The aim of this study was to evaluate the consumption pattern of blood components in epidemic and non-epidemic periods and to verify if there was an impact on dengue cases and the death rate. Method: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted through the collection and analysis of data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health from 2008 to 2019 on new cases and deaths from dengue, as well as the consumption of blood components in the period mentioned by hemovigilance bulletins of the Brazilian authority. Results: Regarding the results, no significant difference was found between the absolute amount of blood components used in years with an epidemic peak. Regarding the relative values, an important variation was shown among the distributive consumption patterns of blood components in the outbreak years. In the univariate linear regression analysis, there was statistical significance between the increase in the number of dengue cases and deaths from dengue with the increase in the consumption of red blood cell concentrates (RBP), platelet concentrates (PP), fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and cryoprecipitate (Cryo) (p-value < 0.05). The increase in dengue cases was related to the increase in Cryo consumption with clinical significance (R² > 0.5), but dengue deaths were not correlated to the same. In multivariate analysis, all regression models had clinical and statistical significance. Conclusion: The data obtained in the present study demonstrate that there is a relevant relationship between the increase in cases and deaths from dengue with the blood components usage, especially PP, FFP and cryoprecipitate.

Abstract A hexanucleotide repeat expansion (HRE) in C9ORF72 is the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Human brain imaging and experimental studies indicate early changes in brain structure and connectivity in C9-ALS/FTD, even before symptom onset. Because these early disease phenotypes remain incompletely understood, we generated iPSC-derived cerebral organoid models from C9-ALS/FTD patients, presymptomatic C9ORF72-HRE (C9-HRE) carriers, and controls. Our work revealed the presence of all three C9-HRE-related molecular pathologies and developmental stage-dependent size phenotypes in cerebral organoids from C9-ALS/FTD patients. In addition, single-cell RNA sequencing identified changes in cell type abundance and distribution in C9-ALS/FTD organoids, including a reduction in the number of deep layer cortical neurons and the distribution of neural progenitors. Further, molecular and cellular analyses and patch-clamp electrophysiology detected various changes in synapse structure and function. Intriguingly, organoids from all presymptomatic C9-HRE carriers displayed C9-HRE molecular pathology, whereas the extent to which more downstream cellular defects, as found in C9-ALS/FTD models, were detected varied for the different presymptomatic C9-HRE cases. Together, these results unveil early changes in 3D human brain tissue organization and synaptic connectivity in C9-ALS/FTD that likely constitute initial pathologies crucial for understanding disease onset and the design of therapeutic strategies.

As modern systems become more complex, their control strategy no longer relies only on measurement data from probes; it also requires information from mathematical models for non-measurable places. On the other hand, those mathematical models can lead to unbearable computation times due to their own complexity, making the control process non-viable. To overcome this problem, it is possible to implement any kind of surrogate model that enables the computation of such estimates within an acceptable time frame, which allows for making decisions. Using a Physics-Informed Neural Network as a surrogate model, it is possible to compute the temperature distribution at each time step, replacing the need for running direct numerical simulations. This approach enables the use of a Deep Reinforcement Learning algorithm to train a control strategy. On this work, we considered a one-dimensional heat conduction problem, in which temperature distribution feeds a control system. Such control system has the objective of reacing and maintaining constant temperature value at a specific location of the 1D problem by activating a heat source; the desired location somehow cannot be directly measured so, the PINN approach allows to estimate its temperature with a minimum computational workload. With this approach, the control training becomes much faster without the need of performing numerical simulations or laboratory measurements.

This special section on mountain pastoralism, mobility and environment in the Mediterranean Europe seeks to reconnect Southern-Europe mountain pastoralism in the face of common social, economic, political and environmental challenges. Despite a diverse organisational and cultural matrix – from the foundational values of honour and shame of the Eastern Mediterranean societies (Peristiany 1974) to the Celtic and Germanic inheritance of communitarianism in the Iberian Peninsula (Dias 1961) – pastoralism in Southern Europe represents an important local livelihood system that shares convergent trajectories.

Abstract Background Countries with formal policies for palliative care, and advanced and integrated practices in this field, such as Portugal, face challenges in achieving excellence in care, particularly in home-based assistance. Issues include care coordination among providers, confusion regarding the roles of each health care professional in the network, and a lack of monitoring and evaluation of actions. Our objective was to analyze the implementation of palliative care in primary health care in Portugal. Methods We conducted a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study in Portugal involving health care professionals with experience in palliative care. The data were collected through semistructured interviews and focus groups between March and October 2023. Eighteen health care professionals participated. We used the Alceste software for lexicographic analysis. The research was authorized by an Ethics Committee. Results Four classes were identified; classes 1 and 2, comprising 77% of the corpus, addressed the study objectives. Participants highlighted inequitable access, strategic development plans with unattainable short-term goals; and low literacy. They emphasized the importance of legislation, professional training initiatives for generalist palliative care at home, and early referral. Home-based challenges included professionals’ lack of exclusive dedication, absence of 24/7 coverage, and unavailability of capable family caregivers. The networks’ response to hospital admissions and patient transitions from hospital to home, with access to the specialized team, was also inadequate. Conclusions Health care professionals aim to increase patients’ time spent at home, reduce emergency department visits, and minimize hospitalizations by leveraging the resources of the national palliative care network. In addition to investments to sustain network implementation and legally guaranteed palliative care rights, the country must focus on measurable indicators for evaluating and monitoring actions, providing better guidance in the short, medium, and long term.

Abstract Most Plasmodium vivax infections contain genetically distinct parasites, but the consequences of this polyclonality on the development of asexual parasites, their sexual differentiation, and their transmission remain unknown. We describe infections of Saimiri monkeys with two strains of P. vivax and the analyses of 80,024 parasites characterized by single cell RNA sequencing and individually genotyped. In our model, consecutive inoculations fail to establish polyclonal infections. By contrast, simultaneous inoculations of two strains lead to sustained polyclonal infections, although without detectable differences in parasite regulation or sexual commitment. Analyses of sporozoites dissected from mosquitoes fed on coinfected monkeys show that all genotypes are successfully transmitted to mosquitoes. However, after sporozoite inoculation, not all genotypes contribute to the subsequent blood infections, highlighting an important bottleneck during pre-erythrocytic development. Overall, these studies provide new insights on the mechanisms regulating the establishment of polyclonal P. vivax infections and their consequences for disease transmission.

In light of uncertainties regarding the availability of resources provided by the Brazilian energy matrix, energy self-sufficiency presents itself as an advantageous perspective to ensure the sustainability of rural properties. The objective was to explore the implementation of renewable energy in rural properties located in the city of Paty do Alferes – RJ, Brazil. In this sense, the aim was to understand the reality of family farmers regarding their knowledge and use of renewable energy through technical visits accompanied by interviews. Based on data collection and context analysis, the study proposed disseminating the technology, recommending the most suitable type of renewable energy for each property based on technical-scientific knowledge. It was found that the property owners are not familiar with the knowledge and use of renewable energy. The amount paid for consumed energy proved to be significant in the family budget. Therefore, the adoption of renewable energy can positively impact the socioeconomic conditions of rural farmers. For electricity generation, a photovoltaic solar system was proposed for Sites A and B, while for Site C an Indian-type anaerobic biodigester was recommended, and for Site D, the installation of a wind turbine for water pumping.

Abstract Intermediate-length repeat expansions in ATAXIN-2 (ATXN2) are the strongest genetic risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). At the molecular level, ATXN2 intermediate expansions enhance TDP-43 toxicity and pathology. However, whether this triggers ALS pathogenesis at the cellular and functional level remains unknown. Here, we combine patient-derived and mouse models to dissect the effects of ATXN2 intermediate expansions in an ALS background. iPSC-derived motor neurons from ATXN2-ALS patients show altered stress granules, neurite damage and abnormal electrophysiological properties compared to healthy control and other familial ALS mutations. In TDP-43 Tg -ALS mice, ATXN2-Q33 causes reduced motor function, NMJ alterations, neuron degeneration and altered in vitro stress granule dynamics. Furthermore, gene expression changes related to mitochondrial function and inflammatory response are detected and confirmed at the cellular level in mice and human neuron and organoid models. Together, these results define pathogenic defects underlying ATXN2-ALS and provide a framework for future research into ATXN2-dependent pathogenesis and therapy.

Abstract Methanol is a promising feedstock for biomanufacturing, but the efficiency of methanol-based bioprocesses is limited by the low rate of methanol utilization pathways and methanol toxicity. Yeast diversity is an attractive biological resource to develop efficient bioprocesses since any effort with strain improvement is more deserving if applied to innate robust strains with relevant catabolic and biosynthetic potential. The present study is in line with such rational and describes the isolation and molecular identification of seven isolates of the methylotrophic species Candida boidinii from waters derived from the traditional curation of olives, in different years, and from contaminated superficial soil near fuel stations. The yeast microbiota from those habitats was also characterized. The four C. boidinii isolates obtained from the curation of olives’ water exhibited significantly higher maximum specific growth rates (range 0.15–0.19 h−1), compared with the three isolates obtained from the fuel contaminated soils (range 0.05–0.06 h−1) when grown on methanol as the sole C-source (1% (v/v), in shake flasks, at 30°C). The isolates exhibit significant robustness towards methanol toxicity that increases as the cultivation temperature decreases from 30°C to 25°C. The better methanol-based growth performance exhibited by C. boidinii isolates from olives´ soaking waters could not be essentially attributed to higher methanol tolerance. These methanol-efficient catabolizing isolates are proposed as a promising platform to develop methanol-based bioprocesses.

Abstract Background Viral respiratory infections may precipitate type 1 diabetes (T1D). A possible association between the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for COVID-19, and the incidence of T1D is being determined. This study was carried out using Portuguese registries, aiming at examining temporal trends between COVID-19 and T1D. Methods Hospital data, comparing the incidence before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, from children and young adults diagnosed with new-onset T1D, was acquired beginning in 2017 and until the end of 2022. Data was obtained from nine different Portuguese hospital units. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning in March 2020, was assessed comparing the annual numbers of new-onset T1D cases. The annual median levels of glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting C-peptide at T1D diagnosis were compared. The annual number of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) episodes among new T1D cases was also assessed at two centers. Results In total, data from 574 newly diagnosed T1D patients was analyzed, including 530 (92.3%) children. The mean ages for child and adult patients were 9.1 (SD 4.4) and 32.8 (SD 13.6) years, respectively. 57.8% (331/573) were male, one patient had unknown sex. The overall median (25–75 percentiles) levels of glucose, HbA1c and fasting C-peptide at diagnosis were 454 mg/dL (356–568), 11.8% (10.1–13.4) and 0.50 µg/L (0.30–0.79), respectively. DKA at T1D diagnosis was present in 48.4% (76/157). For eight centers with complete 2018 to 2021 data (all calendar months), no overall significant increase in T1D cases was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e. 90 cases in 2018, 90 cases in 2019, 112 in 2020 and 100 in 2021 (P for trend = 0.36). Two of the centers, Faro (CHUA) and Dona Estefânia (CHULC) hospitals, did however see an increase in T1D from 2019 to 2020. No significant changes in glucose (P = 0.32), HbA1c (P = 0.68), fasting C-peptide (P = 0.20) or DKA frequency (P = 0.68) at the time of T1D diagnosis were observed over the entire study period. Conclusion The T1D incidence did not increase significantly, when comparing the years before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, nor did key metabolic parameters or number of DKA episodes change.

Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) has proposed to monitor intrinsic capacity (IC) in the older population as a public health strategy through the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) program. Although the program has been developed based on solid concepts, scientific evidence on its practical applicability is still scarce. Objectives: To evaluate IC in Brazilian older adults, its progress over time, and its association with sociodemographic and health factors and outcomes. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the WHO/ICOPE screening tool. Methods: This is a prospective multicenter cohort study with a 36-month follow-up. We will recruit 3838 people aged ≥ 60 years, registered in the health care units included in the study by the participating centers. We will collect sociodemographic and health data and will administer tools to assess IC domains, both those provided for in the ICOPE screening tool and the sequence of confirmatory assessments provided for in the program. Participants will be reassessed every 6 months for 36 months. Expected results: To establish the profile of IC in the study population and to understand its progress and the variables associated with the clinical outcomes of interest. To reveal the diagnostic and psychometric properties of the WHO/ICOPE screening tool. The project is funded by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Relevance: Understanding the potential use of the ICOPE public health strategy proposed by the WHO within the scope of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) by integrating several research centers in the field of Geriatrics and Gerontology throughout Brazil.

Abstract Aims Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) resulting from unprotected left main coronary artery (LMCA) occlusion and subtotal occlusion is a life‐threatening condition. Although AMI management has improved in the past two decades, there is limited information on recent trends in patient characteristics, management, and outcomes for acute unprotected LMCA‐related AMI. This study aims to assess such trends over a 12 year period. Methods and results This retrospective multicentre study includes patients with unprotected LMCA occlusion/subtotal occlusion admitted to three tertiary hospitals between 2008 and 2020. The patients were divided into two groups based on the chronology of presentation: a ‘past group’ (January 2008 to December 2014) and a ‘contemporary group’ (January 2015 to December 2020). The study compares clinical characteristics, management approaches, and outcomes between the two groups. The study includes 128 patients, with 51 (40%) in the ‘past group’ and 77 (60%) in the ‘contemporary group’. Baseline risk factors did not show statistically significant differences between the two groups, except for hypertension (49% vs. 74%; P = 0.005). Chest pain was more frequent in the ‘past group’ (98% vs. 89%; P = 0.014), and a trend towards more cardiac arrests was observed in the ‘contemporary group’ (18% vs. 31%; P = 0.087). Revascularization type did not differ significantly (P = 0.419), but manual thrombectomy was less frequently used (41% vs. 23%; P = 0.032) and stent implantation showed a trend towards higher rates (66% vs. 78%; P = 0.150) in the ‘contemporary cohort’. Introduction and Objectives: Subjects without cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) may suffer from subclinical atherosclerosis, and are at increased risk for atherosclerotic CV events (ASCVE). The ESC/EAS risk SCORE was updated by SCORE2, which estimates 10-year risk of fatal and non-fatal CVD in European populations aged 40–69 years without established CVD or diabetes. Our aim was to compare the two ESC/EAS risk scores and to validate SCORE2 in our population. Methods: A total of 1071 individuals (age 57.2±6.1 years; 75.2% male) without CVD or diabetes, from GENEMACOR study controls, were analyzed over 5.4±3.9 years. The population was stratified into risk categories according to the two scores, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) and Harrell's C-index assessed the scores’ performance. Calibration was performed using the goodness-of-fit test, and occurrence of the first event assessed by Cox regression. Kaplan–Meier analysis estimated SCORE2 survival. Results: SCORE stratified subjects into four risk categories: low (7.4%), moderate (46.5%), high (25.3%) and very high (20.8%), and SCORE2 into three: low-to-moderate (24.7%), high (59.0%) and very high (16.2%). SCORE presented good discrimination for CV mortality (AUC=0.838; C-index=0.834, 95% CI: 0.728–0.940), as did SCORE2 for total CV events (AUC=0.744; C-index=0.728, 95% CI: 0.648–0.808). Calibration did not show a disparity between observed and expected ASCVE. The probability of ASCVE was eight times higher in very-high-risk SCORE2 (p=0.001), and three times in the high-risk group (p=0.049). Current medical research has been demonstrating the roles of miRNAs in a variety of cellular mechanisms, lending credence to the association between miRNA dysregulation and multiple diseases. Understanding the mechanisms of miRNA is critical for developing effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. miRNA-mRNA interactions emerge as the most important mechanism to be understood despite their experimental validation constraints. Accordingly, several computational models have been developed to predict miRNA-mRNA interactions, albeit presenting limited predictive capabilities, poor characterisation of miRNA-mRNA interactions, and low usability. To address these drawbacks, we developed PRIMITI, a PRedictive model for the Identification of novel miRNA-Target mRNA Interactions. PRIMITI is a novel machine learning model that utilises CLIP-seq and expression data to characterise functional target sites in 3’-untranslated regions (3’-UTRs) and predict miRNA-target mRNA repression activity. The model was trained using a reliable negative sample selection approach and the robust extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model, which was coupled with newly introduced features, including sequence and genetic variation information. PRIMITI achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) up to 0.96 for a prediction of functional miRNA-target site binding and 0.96 for a prediction of miRNA-target mRNA repression activity on cross-validation and an independent blind test. Additionally, the model outperformed state-of-the-art methods in recovering miRNA-target repressions in an unseen microarray dataset and in a collection of validated miRNA-mRNA interactions, highlighting its utility for preliminary screening. Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PNH) is a neuronal migration defect characterized by the presence of ectopic grey matter nodules adjacent to the walls of the lateral ventricles. The main genetic etiology of PNH are variants in the Filamin A gene (FLNA, MIM #300049), located in the X chromosome. It affects mostly females (embryonic lethality in males), with about 50% of cases inherited from healthy mothers or with a mild phenotype. It is associated with epilepsy (75%-90%), cardiovascular (65%) and pulmonary pathologies (25%).A 28-year-old primigravida was referred for prenatal care in obstetrics department because of personal history of obliterative bronchiolitis. She has a family history of asthma (mother and sister) and adulthood-onset epilepsy (father). The pregnancy was uneventful up to 20 weeks and 3 days when bilateral periventricular irregularities and mega cisterna magna were identified on ultrasound in a female fetus. Neurosonography was performed, which led to the hypothesis of diffuse PNH, supported by MRI. The hypothesis of PNH associated to the FLNA gene was made. Brain MRI on the pregnant woman was requested, which confirmed a similar pattern of PNH. The arrayCGH (PerkinElmer, Prenatal filter 37K) was normal, and whole exome sequencing identified the likely pathogenic c.1554del p.(Val519fs*) variant in the FLNA gene.We present a case of X-linked hereditary PNH that highlights the value of fetal neurosonography in making a putative diagnosis. The diagnosis was supported by MRI in both fetus and mother. The investigation was supplemented by genetic studies, which confirmed the diagnosis.

Pharmaceuticals in the environment are a global concern, with studies in all continents highlighting their widespread occurrence and potential ecological impacts, revealing their presence, fate, and associated risks in aquatic ecosystems. Despite typically occurring at low concentrations (ranging from ng/L to µg/L), advancements in analytical methods and more sensitive equipment have enabled the detection of a higher number of pharmaceuticals. In this study, surface and wastewater samples were extracted using solid phase extraction and analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Among the therapeutic classes investigated, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs/analgesics, antibiotics, and psychiatric drugs showed a higher number of detected pharmaceuticals. O artigo investiga a Gestão do Conhecimento (GC) como ferramenta estratégica para fomentar a inovação nas organizações. O estudo foca em como a GC pode ser empregada para aumentar a competitividade e a eficácia organizacional por meio da inovação. Utilizando uma metodologia de revisão integrativa, a pesquisa identificou 13 categorias principais de investigação na literatura atual, ressaltando a inter-relação entre a GC e diversos aspectos organizacionais, como competitividade, estratégia, inovação e aprendizagem. O problema central do estudo questiona como a GC tem sido aplicada como ferramenta estratégica para a gestão eficaz da inovação, quanto ao objetivo geral é analisar o papel da GC na promoção da inovação dentro das organizações, visando obter vantagens competitivas e um melhor posicionamento no mercado. A pesquisa foi realizada mediante uma revisão integrativa, analisando diversas publicações acadêmicas para avaliar como a GC é abordada em termos de inovação estratégica. Os recortes das publicações são de 1990 a 2023, selecionados com base em sua relevância para a gestão do conhecimento e inovação. Os resultados indicam que organizações concentradas na GC alcançam resultados melhores em inovação, impactando diretamente em seu desempenho. Os achados enfatizam a necessidade de uma gestão estratégica do conhecimento para promover inovação contínua. O estudo contribui para a compreensão e integração da GC como um catalisador para a inovação e a estratégia organizacional, criando um ambiente propício ao desenvolvimento de novas ideias e melhorias contínuas.

A educação brasileira está vinculada ao projeto colonial. Assim, é necessário adotar abordagens pedagógicas que busquem superar essa realidade. Este trabalho propõe uma reflexão sobre como três coleções de livros didáticos de Ciências da Natureza, do Ensino Médio, nas unidades referentes à história e natureza da ciência, atuam na preservação da colonialidade e/ou como age para superá-la. Para isso, questionamos: quais traços de colonialidade/decolonialidade estão presentes em livros didáticos de Ciências da Natureza, aprovados pelo Programa Nacional do Livro e do Material Didático 2021? Como esses traços são manifestados? Realizamos uma Análise de Conteúdo sob uma perspectiva decolonial. Observamos a presença dos seguintes traços de colonialidade: hierarquização e silenciamento de conhecimentos; caracterização da ciência moderna ocidental como universal e único conhecimento válido para ser propagado na educação formal. Salientamos evidências de pequenos progressos, como a citação de povos não-europeus. Concluímos que não há livro totalmente alinhado às discussões propostas por uma educação científica decolonial, apesar de ser possível observar alguns avanços em determinadas coleções. Reconhecer tais traços é um importante passo rumo à construção e estabelecimento de uma educação científica decolonial, pois a partir disso é possível escrever novas histórias e almejar outros futuros possíveis. Logo, fomentamos discussões sobre como os LD estão lidando com elementos decoloniais.

O método Delphi tem sido utilizado como ferramenta de apoio à tomada de decisão, permitindo que cenários sejam avaliados e melhorados por meio do consenso de especialistas sobre determinado tema. Na perspectiva dos indicadores, essa metodologia auxilia na redução de ambiguidades e na consolidação dessas ferramentas. Nesse sentido, este estudo propõe a identificação e validação de indicadores de sustentabilidade para avaliar programas de coleta seletiva. Para tanto, 32 indicadores foram analisados por meio da referida metodologia, com o intuito de reduzir incertezas e selecionar os indicadores mais relevantes para retratar esses sistemas. Foram adotadas duas rodadas do método, nas quais os especialistas avaliaram o grau de importância dos indicadores e as gradações estabelecidas. Além disso, foi possível sugerir inclusão, exclusão e aperfeiçoamento dos indicadores. Em suma, 26 especialistas participaram efetivamente das duas etapas, e, ao fim do processo, 25 indicadores permaneceram para integrar a matriz de indicadores, sendo sete políticos/institucionais; três econômicos; três sociais; cinco ambientais; dois da saúde e segurança do catador; e cinco da dimensão de desastres, epidemias e pandemias. Os resultados demonstraram que o método Delphi é um recurso eficiente no processo de validação de indicadores, sendo possível alcançar resultados satisfatórios e um elevado nível de consenso e estabilidade do ponto de vista dos especialistas.

Abstract Background Trauma and emergency surgery are major causes of morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to determine whether serum levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine are associated with aging and mortality. Methods This was a prospective observational cohort study conducted in a surgical critical care unit. We included 90 patients who were admitted for postoperative care, because of major trauma, or both. We collected demographic and clinical variables, as well as serum levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine. Results For patients in the > 60-year age group, the use of vasoactive drugs was found to be associated with an undetectable epinephrine level (OR [95% CI] = 6.36 [1.12, 36.08]), p = 0.05). For the patients with undetectable epinephrine levels, the in-hospital mortality was higher among those with a norepinephrine level ≥ 2006.5 pg/mL (OR [95% CI] = 4.00 [1.27, 12.58]), p = 0.03). Conclusions There is an association between age and mortality. Undetectable serum epinephrine, which is more common in older patients, could contribute to poor outcomes. The use of epinephrine might improve the clinical prognosis in older surgical patients with shock.

Objetivo. Calcular o indicador de consumo de álcool per capita (APC) para o Brasil utilizando dados nacionais (APC Brasil), com vistas a estabelecê-lo como padrão ouro para o país em substituição ao indicador anteriormente calculado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) com base em dados internacionais. Métodos. Foram selecionadas, no Brasil, as fontes públicas de dados necessárias para a composição do cálculo do APC registrado e definida a concentração alcoólica por categoria de bebida. Para as variáveis APC turista e APC não registrado, indisponíveis no Brasil, foram usadas as estimativas da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) e da OMS. O indicador APC Brasil foi calculado e comparado ao indicador produzido pela OMS por meio de análise das medianas para o período de 2005 a 2020. Resultados. O indicador de consumo de álcool nacional foi de 9,2 litros per capita em 2005, chegando a 9,8 em 2020. Já o indicador da OMS mostrou, para 2005, um consumo de 8,4 litros per capita, com queda até 2016 e leve aumento para 7,8 em 2020. Conclusão. O APC Brasil foi calculado com base em fontes nacionais e mostrou tendência distinta em relação ao indicador da OMS, que se mostrou em queda. A disponibilização transparente e regular desse indicador por canais governamentais permitirá o seu monitoramento, possibilitando a elaboração de políticas para o enfrentamento do consumo do álcool no país.

Abstract Background Evolution is a unifying theme in biology and its understanding is essential to address sustainability problems. However, many people across the world do not understand evolution. Textbooks are among the most widely used educational resources and the way they depict evolution may greatly impact students’ scientific literacy in evolution. In this paper we investigate which evolution concepts are addressed in European science textbooks, from the 1st to the 9th grade. A content analysis using the ‘Framework for the Assessment of school Curricula on the presence of Evolutionary concepts”, was performed on textbooks from eight European countries: Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and Slovenia. At least two experienced coders per country independently analysed the texts, images and activities, discussed the results and reached a final consensus. Results Our results show that textbooks lack or rarely address concepts considered important for evolution understanding, notably the processes driving evolution and their daily life implications, limiting opportunities for education for sustainability. Conclusions We recommend that science textbooks emphasize evolution and its processes since the first school years. This recommendation is particularly relevant for the analysed textbooks from Cyprus and Belgium, that cover less than 45% of the concepts important to evolution literacy.

Soil carbon monoxide (CO) fluxes represent a net balance between biological soil CO uptake and abiotic soil and (senescent) plant CO production. Studies largely from temperate and boreal forests indicate that soils serve as a net sink for CO, but uncertainty remains about the role of tropical rainforest soils to date. Here we report the first direct measurements of soil CO fluxes in a tropical rainforest and compare them with estimates of net ecosystem CO fluxes derived from accumulation of CO at night under stable atmospheric conditions. Furthermore, we used laboratory experiments to demonstrate the importance of temperature on net soil CO fluxes. Net soil surface CO fluxes ranged from −0.19 to 3.36 nmol m−2 s−1, averaging ∼1 nmol CO m−2 s−1. Fluxes varied with season and topographic location, with the highest fluxes measured in the dry season in a seasonally inundated valley. Ecosystem CO fluxes estimated from nocturnal canopy air profiles, which showed CO mixing ratios that consistently decreased with height, ranged between 0.3 and 2.0 nmol CO m−2 s−1. A canopy layer budget method, using the nocturnal increase in CO, estimated similar flux magnitudes (1.1 to 2.3 nmol CO m−2 s−1). In the wet season, a greater valley ecosystem CO production was observed in comparison to measured soil valley CO fluxes, suggesting a contribution of the valley stream to overall CO emissions. Laboratory incubations demonstrated a clear increase in CO production with temperature that was also observed in field fluxes, though high correlations between soil temperature and moisture limit our ability to interpret the field relationship. At a common temperature (25 °C), expected plateau and valley senescent-leaf CO production was small (0.012 and 0.002 nmol CO m−2 s−1) in comparison to expected soil material CO emissions (∼ 0.9 nmol CO m−2 s−1). Based on our field and laboratory observations, we expect that tropical rainforest ecosystems are a net source of CO, with thermal-degradation-induced soil emissions likely being the main contributor to ecosystem CO emissions. Extrapolating our first observation-based tropical rainforest soil emission estimate of ∼ 1 nmol m−2 s−1, global tropical rainforest soil emissions of ∼ 16.0 Tg CO yr−1 are estimated. Nevertheless, total ecosystem CO emissions might be higher, since valley streams and inundated areas might represent local CO emission hot spots. To further improve tropical forest ecosystem CO emission estimates, more in situ tropical forest soil and ecosystem CO flux measurements are essential.

Abstract Background Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes are responsible for tremendous global health burdens from their transmission of pathogens causing malaria, lymphatic filariasis, dengue, and yellow fever. Innovative vector control strategies will help to reduce the prevalence of these diseases. Mass rearing of mosquitoes for research and support of these strategies presently depends on meals of vertebrate blood, which is subject to acquisition, handling, and storage issues. Various blood-free replacements have been formulated for these mosquitoes, but none of these replacements are in wide use, and little is known about their potential impact on competence of the mosquitoes for Plasmodium infection. Methods Colonies of Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi were continuously maintained on a blood-free replacement (SkitoSnack; SS) or bovine blood (BB) and monitored for engorgement and hatch rates. Infections of Ae. aegypti and An. stephensi were assessed with Plasmodium gallinaceum and P. falciparum, respectively. Results Replicate colonies of mosquitoes were maintained on BB or SS for 10 generations of Ae. aegypti and more than 63 generations of An. stephensi. The odds of engorgement by SS- relative to BB-maintained mosquitoes were higher for both Ae. aegypti (OR = 2.6, 95% CI 1.3–5.2) and An. stephensi (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.4–5.5), while lower odds of hatching were found for eggs from the SS-maintained mosquitoes of both species (Ae. aegypti OR = 0.40, 95% CI 0.26–0.62; An. stephensi OR = 0.59, 95% CI 0.36–0.96). Oocyst counts were similar for P. gallinaceum infections of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes maintained on SS or BB (mean ratio = [mean on SS]/[mean on BB] = 1.11, 95% CI 0.85–1.49). Similar oocyst counts were also observed from the P. falciparum infections of SS- or BB-maintained An. stephensi (mean ratio = 0.76, 95% CI 0.44–1.37). The average counts of sporozoites/mosquito showed no evidence of reductions in the SS-maintained relative to BB-maintained mosquitoes of both species. Conclusions Aedes aegypti and An. stephensi can be reliably maintained on SS over multiple generations and are as competent for Plasmodium infection as mosquitoes maintained on BB. Use of SS alleviates the need to acquire and preserve blood for mosquito husbandry and may support new initiatives in fundamental and applied research, including novel manipulations of midgut microbiota and factors important to the mosquito life cycle and pathogen susceptibility. Abstract We investigate a hybrid device allowing a photon–phonon coupling of a transmission line radiation (TLR) and a nanoeletromechanical system (NEMS), mediated by a superconducting qubit population imbalance. We demonstrate the derivation of an effective Hamiltonian for the strongly dispersive regime for this system. The qubit works as a quantum switch, allowing a conditioned transfer of excitations between the TLR and NEMS. We show that this regime allows the system to be employed for signal processing and force estimation. Additionally, we explore the ability of the quantum switch to generate non-classical states.

Abstract Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a severe haematological neoplasm that originates from the transformation of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) into leukaemic stem cells (LSCs). The bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, particularly that of mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs), plays a crucial role in the maintenance of HSCs. In this context, we explored whether alterations in the secretome of hMSCs derived from AML patients (hMSC-AML) could impact HSC gene expression. Proteomic analysis revealed that the secretome of coculture assays with hMSC-AMLs and HSC from healthy donor is altered, with increased levels of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI), a protein associated with important processes for maintenance of the haematopoietic niche that has already been described to be altered in several tumours. Increased SLPI expression was also observed in the BM plasma of AML patients. Transcriptome analysis of HSCs cocultured with hMSC-AML in comparison with HSCs cocultured with hMSC-HD revealed altered expression of SLPI target genes associated with the cell cycle, proliferation, and apoptosis. Important changes were identified, such as increased expression levels of CCNA2, CCNE2, CCND2, CD133 and CDK1 and decreased levels of CDKN2A and IGFBP3, among others. Overall, these findings suggest that the altered secretome of coculture assays with hMSC-AMLs and HSC from healthy donor, particularly increased SLPI expression, can contribute to gene expression changes in HSCs, potentially influencing important molecular mechanisms related to AML development and progression.

O presente estudo estabeleceu como objetivo identificar os impactos gerados a partir da implementação de um sistema de informação em uma agroindústria. Para alcançar este objetivo, a pesquisa, de natureza qualitativa, teve como instrumento de coleta de dados entrevistas semiestruturadas, realizadas com dois gestores de uma agroindústria localizada no Litoral Norte da Paraíba. Os dados coletados foram analisados por meio da técnica da análise de conteúdo, agrupando-os em categorias. A pesquisa apresentou, por meio das perspectivas dos gestores entrevistados, todo o processo de implementação, funcionalidades, impactos e desafios relacionados ao sistema utilizado pela empresa. Os resultados permitem concluir que o sistema adquirido apresenta diversos benefícios para a empresa, notadamente do ponto de vista de processos, produção e econômicos. Contudo, alguns desafios apontados pelos entrevistados, sobretudo diante da resistência dos usuários em utilizar o sistema, demonstram a necessidade de estabelecimento de uma política de tecnologia da informação na empresa, incluindo desde o planejamento participativo das necessidades de tecnologia, até os aspectos relacionados à avalição do desempenho do sistema.

This review aims to highlight the main microbiological challenges faced in poultry transport and show the role of effective bacterial control during this process to ensure poultry health and meat safety and to reduce economic losses. Poultry infections are among the most frequent infections in production systems, manifesting themselves in hatcheries, farms, slaughterhouses, and during transport between these integration centers. Although the clinical symptoms of these infections can range from mild to severe, many of them can lead to irreversible conditions, resulting in death and compromising productive results. Bacteria are the main causative agents of these infections, although fungi, viruses, and protozoa may also be involved. During the transport of poultry from farms to slaughterhouses, poultry are very vulnerable to infectious conditions. Therefore, implementing effective antibacterial management, focused on professionals, transport crates, and transport vehicles, is essential to guarantee the survival and quality of poultry until the moment of slaughter.

Background: Investigations have shown the different impacts that ACEs have on an individual’s adult life, on both physical and mental health, but they have not yet shown the issue of the influence of ACEs on adults and young adults. Objective/Participants and Setting: This systematic review, performed according to the PRISMA norms and guidelines, intended to understand the most frequent outcomes of adverse childhood experiences in the life of young adults and adults. Methods: Studies were identified through multiple literature search databases at EBSCOhost, Web of Science, and PubMed April 2023, and a total of 279 studies, published between 1999 and 2002, were excluded, 256 because of multiple factors: being duplicates, showing statistical analysis with correlations only, being systematic reviews or case studies, comprising individuals under the age of 18, and not meeting the intended theme; ultimately, we selected for the review a total of 23 studies. Results and Conclusions: The impacts of the various articles are subdivided into three main themes: antisocial and criminal behaviour; sexual Behaviour and intimate partner violence; and attachment, quality of life, and therapeutic alliance.

Abstract Background Mechanical stimulation (MS) significantly increases the release of adenine and uracil nucleotides from bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) undergoing osteogenic differentiation. Released nucleotides acting via ionotropic P2X7 and metabotropic P2Y6 purinoceptors sensitive to ATP and UDP, respectively, control the osteogenic commitment of BM-MSCs and, thus, bone growth and remodelling. Yet, this mechanism is impaired in post-menopausal (Pm)-derived BM-MSCs, mostly because NTPDase3 overexpression decreases the extracellular accumulation of nucleotides below the levels required to activate plasma membrane-bound P2 purinoceptors. This prompted us to investigate whether in vitro MS of BM-MSCs from Pm women could rehabilitate their osteogenic commitment and whether xenotransplantation of MS purinome-primed Pm cells promote repair of critical bone defects in an in vivo animal model. Methods BM-MSCs were harvested from the neck of femora of Pm women (70 ± 3 years old) undergoing total hip replacement. The cells grew, for 35 days, in an osteogenic-inducing medium either submitted (SS) or not (CTR) to MS (90 r.p.m. for 30 min) twice a week. Increases in alkaline phosphatase activity and in the amount of osteogenic transcription factors, osterix and osteopontin, denoted osteogenic cells differentiation, while bone nodules formation was ascertain by the alizarin red-staining assay. The luciferin-luciferase bioluminescence assay was used to quantify extracellular ATP. The kinetics of the extracellular ATP (100 µM) and UDP (100 µM) catabolism was assessed by HPLC. The density of P2Y6 and P2X7 purinoceptors in the cells was assessed by immunofluorescence confocal microscopy. MS-stimulated BM-MSCs from Pm women were xenotransplanted into critical bone defects drilled in the great trochanter of femora of one-year female Wistar rats; bone repair was assessed by histological analysis 10 days after xenotransplantation. Results MS-stimulated Pm BM-MSCs in culture (i) release 1.6-fold higher ATP amounts, (ii) overexpress P2X7 and P2Y6 purinoceptors, (iii) exhibit higher alkaline phosphatase activity and overexpress the osteogenic transcription factors, osterix and osteopontin, and (iv) form larger bone nodules, than CTR cells. Selective blockage of P2X7 and P2Y6 purinoceptors with A438079 (3 µM) and MRS 2578 (0.1 µM), respectively, prevented the osteogenic commitment of cultured Pm BM-MSCs. Xenotransplanted MS purinome-primed Pm BM-MSCs accelerated the repair of critical bone defects in the in vivo rat model. Conclusions Data suggest that in vitro MS restores the purinergic cell-to-cell communication fostering the osteogenic differentiation and osteointegration of BM-MSCs from Pm women, a strategy that may be used in bone regeneration and repair tactics.

O turismo é reconhecido como um dos setores mais importantes e dinâmicos da economia portuguesa. Pela sua natureza e evolução nas últimas décadas, este setor assistiu a profundas alterações em todos as suas áreas. O alojamento terá sido uma das áreas a registar maior evolução e diversificação. Por este motivo, a legislação que a regulamenta foi sendo alterada com uma frequência significativa desde a sua génese, mas especialmente nas últimas décadas. Este artigo efetua o levantamento dos sucessivos diplomas legais e interpreta a sua evolução. A investigação propõe uma divisão em cinco gerações no que diz respeito à evolução das legislação hoteleira, sendo que a primeira coincide com a primeira lei regulamentadora do setor, a segunda com o início do desenvolvimento do verdadeiro turismo de massas em Portugal, a terceira com a entrada na Comunidade Económica Europeia, a quarta com a massificação e internacionalização do turismo português e, por último, a quinta geração coincide com a globalização, a consolidação da internet e o surgimento de novas e reformuladas realidades de alojamento.

Abstract Background The red oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides is a promising cell factory to produce microbial oils and carotenoids from lignocellulosic hydrolysates (LCH). A multi-stress tolerant strain towards four major inhibitory compounds present in LCH and methanol, was derived in our laboratory from strain IST536 (PYCC 5615) through adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) under methanol and high glycerol selective pressure. Results Comparative genomic analysis suggested the reduction of the original strain ploidy from triploid to diploid, the occurrence of 21,489 mutations, and 242 genes displaying copy number variants in the evolved strain. Transcriptomic analysis identified 634 genes with altered transcript levels (465 up, 178 down) in the multi-stress tolerant strain. Genes associated with cell surface biogenesis, integrity, and remodelling and involved in stress-responsive pathways exhibit the most substantial alterations at the genome and transcriptome levels. Guided by the suggested stress responses, the multi-stress tolerance phenotype was extended to osmotic, salt, ethanol, oxidative, genotoxic, and medium-chain fatty acid-induced stresses. Conclusions The comprehensive analysis of this evolved strain provided the opportunity to get mechanistic insights into the acquisition of multi-stress tolerance and a list of promising genes, pathways, and regulatory networks, as targets for synthetic biology approaches applied to promising cell factories, toward more robust and superior industrial strains. This study lays the foundations for understanding the mechanisms underlying tolerance to multiple stresses in R. toruloides, underscoring the potential of ALE for enhancing the robustness of industrial yeast strains.

Abstract Background Recognizing nature and the environment as sociocultural constructions is critical to enhancing a transformational ecological change. This involves understanding their diverse sociocultural meanings and societal approaches and how these understandings affect equitable ecological transitions. We reviewed empirical studies and essays, categorizing 161 studies into three main categories: opposition, domination, and interdependencies, reflecting varying knowledge, power dynamics, cultures, and contexts. These studies aim to uncover how societies conceptualize, explain, and engage with nature and the environment, shaping society–nature relationships and influencing ecological transitions. Results This study underscores the diverse perceptions and representations of nature, from a controllable resource to an integrated web of life. Three main categories emerged: (i) nature against society, in a logic of opposition; (ii) nature subordinated to society, in a logic of domination, although integrated into society; and (iii) nature united with society, in a logic of interdependence. Thus, this study advocates discussing “natures” as sociocultural constructs, highlighting the plurality of social perceptions and representations, which can inform policies and challenge socio-political and socio-economic systems. Conclusions This review may pave the way to, first, give visibility and value that diversity and plurality as an instrument that can enrich policies and defy socio-political and socio-economic systems to change and, second, identify the main drivers and resistances that the implementation of an ecological transformation change may face in different sociocultural contexts.

Abstract We study one-parameter families of U(1)2 preserving deformations relating pairs of toric quiver gauge theories on D-branes probing local toric (pseudo) del Pezzo surfaces. The superpotential deformations are defined by zig-zag paths in the brane tiling and are non-trivial in the chiral ring if the geometry has a non-isolated singularity. In the dual (p, q) web, the deformation is realized as a Hanany-Witten move that reverses a semi-infinite fivebrane. We use these deformations to find RG flows between 4d N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 SCFTs on D3-branes probing local toric (pseudo) del Pezzo surfaces of the same degree, and briefly comment on the interpretation for BPS quivers of rank one 5d SCFTs on S 1.

Objetivo: identificar os efeitos e aplicação do propionato de clobetasol na cicatrização de feridas em humanos, e em quais feridas é mais frequente o uso dessa corticoideterapia tópica. Método: revisão integrativa, com a estratégia PICO, realizada entre janeiro e março de 2024 nas bases de dados U.S National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Cochrane Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) e no Google Acadêmico. Utilizou-se o seguinte algoritmo de busca: “Clobetasol” AND “Wound Healing” AND “Patients” com recorte temporal de 10 anos. Resultados: foram encontrados 1939 estudos, sendo selecionados 18 para a revisão. A maioria foi do tipo relato de caso. O tipo de ferida mais prevalente foi o pioderma gangrenoso ulcerativo, sendo a aplicação do clobetasol duas vezes na semana por até 14 dias. Os efeitos com uso do medicamento foram a diminuição dos sinais de inflamação e resolução na cicatrização das feridas. Conclusão: os dados sugerem que a aplicação tópica do propionato de clobetasol, em conjunto com outras terapias, em humanos portadores de feridas do tipo pioderma gangrenoso, penfigoide bolhoso, hipergranulação, queimaduras, dermatoses e líquen escleroso promove melhoras no processo cicatricial.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift to remote education, significantly impacting teachers and students. This study, the second phase of a longitudinal research project, examines the work context of university professors during the pandemic. Focusing on changes in their work environment, the study involved interviews with three professors, analyzed from a constructivist-interpretative perspective. Key findings indicate a merging of home and work spaces, overlapping professional and personal time, and new costs associated with remote work. The findings also showed increased administrative responsibilities and a lack of institutional support. Furthermore, the study observed reduced work-related interactions and rest periods, counterbalanced by improved flexibility and institutional communication. These insights deepen the understanding of teaching dynamics during the pandemic and its broader life impacts. However, limitations included the study’s small participant number and their single-course affiliation. Future research could expand to diverse courses and a larger pool of participants. Investigating female teachers’ reproductive work to address gender inequality in higher education is also an important goal.

Abstract Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis are diseases associated with economic losses; ticks and blood-sucking flies are important zoonotic vectors and reservoirs. This study aimed to investigate the presence of anti-Babesia spp. and anti-Anaplasma marginale antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), in ruminants at the Catimbau National Park. Blood samples were collected from 119 sheep, 119 goats, and 47 cattle. Rhipicephalus microplus ticks were collected from cattle. ELISA showed seropositivity of 34% (16/47), 20.3% (24/119), and 16% (19/119) for anti-Babesia bovis; 34% (16/47), 15.2% (18/119), and 9% (7/119) for anti-Babesia bigemina; and 34% (16/47), 35.6% (42/119), and 17% (20/119) for anti-A. marginale antibodies in cattle, goats, and sheep, respectively. The information collected using an epidemiological questionnaire showed that mostly are breed in a semi-intensive system, with access to Caatinga vegetation. The circulation of B. bovis, B. bigemina, and A. marginale was confirmed. Thus, based on the prevalence, this suggests this is an enzootic instability area and is prone to outbreaks.

Resumo: O artigo apresenta a análise das propostas de Projeto de Lei e de Emendas Constitucionais sem tramitação no Congresso Nacional do período de 2012 a 2019. A finalidade é problematizar as propostas contrárias ao Sistema Nacional de Atendimento Socioeducativo (Sinase), visando contribuir para o aprofundamento da discussão sobre a garantia de direitos aos adolescentes em cumprimento de medidas socioeducativas.

Most research on school violence in Brazil has overlooked teacher victimization, focusing instead on students. This study focused on evaluating the psychometric properties of the Negative Acts Questionnaire- Revised (NAQ-R) in a sample of 10.148 teachers from Brazilian public schools. The NAQ-R, developed to measure exposure to workplace bullying, originally included 23 items but was later revised to 22. It assesses three factors of bullying: personal, workrelated, and physically intimidating forms. The study employed a self-administered questionnaire issued via the Internet. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed, alongside assessment of convergent validity with the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20), an instrument for screening common mental disorders. This study discovered a two-factor structure (personal bullying: α = .93, ω = .79; work-related bullying: α = .92, ω = .74). The NAQ-R showed adequate internal consistency and validity (RMSEArobust = .089, 90 % CI: .086 – .089, SRMR = .041, CFIrobust = .916, TLIrobust = .905), correlating positively with the SRQ-20. The findings align with international studies, suggesting the measure’s stability.

As coleções zoológicas servem de base para a implementação de políticas públicas voltadas à conservação dos ambientes naturais. No Brasil, a maioria das instituições a abrigarem coleções zoológicas são instituições universitárias, em sua maioria, com condições, no mínimo, desafiadoras, para mantê-las como seria o ideal. O presente estudo tem por objetivo realizar um levantamento das principais instituições que possuem coleções zoológicas no estado de Minas Gerais e, a partir de um questionário, compreender quais são os maiores desafios enfrentados para a manutenção dos acervos. A pesquisa foi direcionada a dez instituições. A partir dos pontos levantados, foram observados que, no século XXI, a falta de financiamento e o ataque por pragas (e.g., fungos e traças, dentre outros) aos materiais preservados são os principais obstáculos as instituições, seguidos por espaços físicos inadequados para armazenamento de material, carência por profissionais e material biológico tombado. Com base no exposto e nos dados levantados pela pesquisa, sugere-se que o financiamento público e ou privado são de extrema importância na conservação das coleções zoológicas no estado de Minas Gerais.

ABSTRACT Objective Determining the etiology of hyperprolactinemia is fundamental for selecting the most appropriate treatment strategy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness and accuracy of prolactin levels in predicting the etiology of nonphysiological hyperprolactinemia. Subjects and methods In this retrospective study, we reviewed medical records of patients with nonphysiological hyperprolactinemia seen at two neuroendocrine reference centers located in Recife, Brazil, from January 2000 to December 2019. Results The study included 770 patients aged 12-73 years (65% female). The three most frequent etiologies of hyperprolactinemia were prolactinomas (n = 263; 34.2%), drug-induced hyperprolactinemia (n = 160; 20.8%), and macroprolactinemia (n = 120; 15.6%). The highest mean prolactin levels were observed in cases of prolactinomas and idiopathic hyperprolactinemia. Most patients with hyperprolactinemia due to other etiologies had prolactin levels < 100 ng/mL, but these levels were also found in 16.5% of patients with microproplactinomas and in 20% of those with idiopathic hyperprolactinemia. Likewise, prolactin levels largely overlapped among patients with microprolactinomas, macroprolactinemia, and drug-induced hyperprolactinemia. Notably, prolactin levels > 250 ng/mL enabled a clear distinction between the etiologies of macroprolactinoma and nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma. Moreover, prolactin levels > 500 ng/mL were highly suggestive of macroprolactinomas, although they were also found in very few patients ( 250 ng/mL allowed a clear distinction between macroprolactinomas and nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas. Furthermore, prolactin levels > 500 ng/mL were almost exclusively found in patients with prolactinomas.
