# Background A three-day One Health training program for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals in One Health-related fields, was conducted by the Philippine One Health University Network (PhilOHUN), in collaboration with the Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN), through a webinar series. To measure the impact of the training on the awareness, knowledge, attitude, and practices (A-KAP) related to the topics covered in the program, this study was conducted. # Methods A quasi-experimental design was employed to evaluate the effect of the One Health training program on the A-KAP of the participants. An online questionnaire developed based on the content of the training modules was administered to the participants before and after the training program. The attendees who accomplished both the pre- and post-training A-KAP assessment questionnaire were included as study participants; of the 225 attendees, 119 respondents qualified. The difference between the pre- and post-training mean A-KAP scores of participants was determined using paired t-test. # Results Findings showed that the Awareness of the participants (P\0.05) after taking part in the training. # Conclusions The significant differences in awareness and knowledge suggest that the training modules contain relevant topics, which were effectively transmitted during the program. For Attitude and Practices, it may be premature to determine the impact of a single activity, although it is expected that these will change over time. Nevertheless, the training program can be used as a springboard for introducing One Health concepts to a wider audience and a continuing initiative to influence the development of appropriate attitudes and practices for current and future One Health practitioners.

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counterintuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfvén waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, α = 2 as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed >600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: preflare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that α = 1.63 ± 0.03. This is below the critical threshold, suggesting that Alfvén waves are an important driver of coronal heating.

Abstract Background Antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide problem causing serious health threats. Escherichia coli is one of the most important bacteria that causes resistance problem. These bacteria produce an enzyme called extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) that allows it to become resistant to a wide variety of penicillins and cephalosporins. Currently, no information or published studies on ESBL-producing E.coli in broilers are available in the Philippines. This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and distribution of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-encoding genes, bla CTX-M, bla SHV, and bla TEM , among E. coli isolates from broiler farms in Luzon, Philippines. Results Results showed a farm prevalence of 66. 67%. A total of 69 (44.23%) ESBL-producing E. coli were isolated from boot swabs and cloacal swab samples from broiler farms. All major bla CTX-M groups except bla CTX-M-25 group were identified in the isolates. The most prevalent group was bla CTX-M-1, 72.46% (CI: 60.38–82.54%), followed by bla CTX-M-2, bla CTX-M-9 group and bla CTX-M-8. The bla TEM and bla SHV genes were identified in 57.97 and 27.54% of isolates, respectively. The bla CTX-M and bla TEM were the most common gene combinations (33.33%). Coexistence of bla CTX-M types was observed in 50 (73.53%) isolates. Conclusion This study shows the high prevalence, diversity of patterns and coexistence of ESBL genes in the E. coli isolates from cloacal and boot swabs from broiler farms which pose risks of possible transmission to the environment, other animals and human.

Maria Luca,1 Giuseppa Prossimo,1 Vincenzo Messina,1 Antonina Luca,2 Salvatore Romeo,1 Carmela Calandra11Department of Medical and Surgery Specialties, Psychiatry Unit, 2Department of Neuroscience, University Hospital Policlinico-Vittorio Emanuele, Catania, Sicily, ItalyBackground: The present study aimed: to assess prescribing patterns in the treatment of major depression, bipolar disorder type I, cyclothymia, and dysthymia from 1996 to 2007 in a day hospital setting; to evaluate the prevalence of the above-mentioned mood disorders and gender distribution; and to relate familiality, comorbidity, and marital status to each diagnosis.Methods: Medical records for 777 day hospital patients with a diagnosis of major depression, bipolar disorder type I, cyclothymia, or dysthymia were grouped into two 6-year periods so as to compare the prescribing patterns of tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, noradrenergic reuptake inhibitors, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants, first-generation antipsychotics, second-generation antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers. Gender, prevalence, familiality, comorbidity, and marital status were related to each diagnosis.Results: The most common mood disorder, with a female preponderance, was major depression, regardless of marital status. High percentages of familiality and comorbidity were found for major depression, while a reduction was found in the utilization of tricyclic antidepressants. There was no statistically significant difference in rates of prescription of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and noradrenergic reuptake inhibitors, but some irregularities were found upon evaluating each diagnosis (eg, increased utilization of these agents in dysthymia and major depression, respectively). There was an increase in prescriptions for serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, but no marked differences in utilization of noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants, which remained basically low. There was no significant difference in prescribing of first-generation antipsychotic agents, although a reduction was found. There was a significant increase in utilization of second-generation antipsychotics and mood stabilizers.Conclusion: Our epidemiological findings are consistent with data reported in the literature regarding the high prevalence of major depression among the mood disorders, as well as the impact of familiality and comorbidity. Analysis of prescribing patterns for antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers in the treatment of mood disorders shows a shift from older to newer drugs, and wider use of mood stabilizers.Keywords: antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, prescribing patterns, mood disorders, treatment

OBJETIVO: Evaluar el efecto de la inmunización con vacuna neumocóccica conjugada 7 valente (VCN7), sobre la colonización nasofaríngea por S. pneumoniae (SPN). MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se estudiaron dos grupos con diferente esquema de vacunación: grupo I (2-6 meses de edad) 3+1, grupo II (7-11 meses) 2+1, con refuerzo a los 15 meses de edad. Se realizaron cultivos nasofaríngeos antes de cada inmunización y posterior al refuerzo; se analizó de forma global y pareada las proporciones de los niños colonizados por SPN, serotipos vacunales, no vacunales y resistencia a la penicilina. RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron 183 niños; 93 en el grupo I y 90 en el grupo II. En el grupo I disminuyeron los serotipos vacunales en la 3ª muestra. En el grupo II aumentaron los serotipos no vacunales y disminuyeron los serotipos vacunales antes del refuerzo. En ambos grupos hay una tendencia a disminuir la resistencia a penicilina. CONCLUSIÓN: La VCN7 ocasiona un reemplazo de serotipos en la colonización nasofaríngea antes del refuerzo.OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) immunization on pneumococcal nasopharyngeal colonization with S. pneumoniae (SPN). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied two groups with different vaccination schedules, group I (2-6 months of age) 3+1 and group II (7 -11 months) 2+1, with a booster at 15 months. Nasopharyngeal cultures were obtained before administering each vaccination dose and after booster. Paired and global analyses were carried out of the proportions of children colonized by SPN, vaccine serotype, no vaccine serotype and resistance to penicillin. RESULTS: A total of 183 children were enrolled; 93 in group I and 90 in group II. In group I, there was a decrease in vaccine serotypes in the third sample. In group II, there was an increase in non-vaccine serotypes and a decrease in vaccine serotypes before booster. Both groups showed a trend toward decreased resistance to penicillin. CONCLUSION: PCV7 caused serotype replacement in nasopharyngeal colonization before the booster.

OBJECTIVE: To carry out a pilot study to discover the frequency of colonization in healthy children under five years old and teenagers, as well as the distribution of the different N. meningitidis serogroups isolated from nasopharyngeal samples collected from the population under study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The population included youth between 15 and 19 years old living in social rehabilitation centers (SRC) and university teenagers (UT) as well as children under the age of five attending day care centers (DCC) in Mexico City. Nasopharyngeal exudates were processed using standard microbiological techniques in order to identify Nm, the serogroup, type and subtype of these isolates. RESULTS: A total of 2 310 samples (774 SRC, 800 UT and 736 DCC) were taken. Total prevalence of Nm was 1.6 per cent. In teenagers living in SRC the prevalence was 2.9%. The most frequent serogroups were Y (29.7%), C (24.3%) and B (10.8%). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of carriers in the study environment was significant (1.6%) and similar to countries in which the invasive illness is much more frequent.OBJETIVO: Realizar un estudio piloto que permita conocer la frecuencia de colonización en niños sanos menores de cinco años y adolescentes, así como la distribución de serogrupos de los aislamientos de Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) obtenidos de la nasofaringe de la población estudiada. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se incluyeron, jóvenes entre los 15 y 19 años de edad, de centros de readaptación social (CRS) y adolescentes universitarios (AU), así como niños menores de cinco años que asisten a estancias infantiles (EI) en la Ciudad de México. Se tomaron exudados nasofaríngeos y fueron procesados, usando las técnicas microbiológicas clásicas, para identificar Nm, serogrupo, tipo y subtipo de estos aislamientos. RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron un total de 2310 muestras (774 CRS, 800 AU y 736 EI). La prevalencia total de Nm fue 1.6% y en los adolescentes de CRS fue 2.9 por ciento. Los serogrupos más frecuentes son; Y (29.7%), C (24.3%) y B (10.8%). CONCLUSIÓN: La prevalencia de portadores en nuestro medio fue significativa (1.6%) y similar a los países en los que la enfermedad invasiva es mucho más frecuente.

Objective. To define epidemiologic relationships to determine the prevalence and potential risk factors for nasopharyngeal colonization by antibiotic-resistant pneumococci, their serotypes and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns in children attending a daycare center (DCC). Material and Methods. A prospective cohort study was conducted among children (n=53) attending the DCC at Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez, which is staffed by 20 employees. Patients were enrolled in the study during a two-year period from September 1997 to September 1999. All the participants were followed prospectively, swabbing them every four months. The strains recovered were typed and screened for susceptibility to several antibiotics. The daycare records were reviewed also. Odds ratios and fisher's exact test: or chi square test of significance were computed from contingency tables as appropriate. Exact 95% confidence intervals were computed for odds ratios. Data analysis was performed using Epi statistics program version 6.04 a. Results. Pneumococci were recovered from 45/53 of the infants at one or more visits. A total of 178 isolates were carried. The carriage rate was 47%. Only 7 adults acquired pneumococci during the study. Types 6,14,19 and 23 were prevalent and represented 77% of the total. Antibiotic-resistant strains were higher to penicillin and erythromycin. Conclusions. Children were frequent carriers of pneumococci, the rate of carriage was high in infancy and tended to decrease with age. The types commonly carried by children were the same as those causing invasive disease. There is a high proportion of carriers with antibiotic-resistant S. pneumoniae strains. Children who have had frequent antimicrobial courses are at particular risk.Objetivo. Analizar longitudinalmente la dinámica de colonización por Streptococcus pneumoniae, determinar la prevalencia, los factores de riesgo potencial para la colonización nasofaríngea con cepas de neumococo resistentes, determinar los serotipos y el perfil de sensibilidad a varios fármacos antimicrobianos. Material y métodos. Estudio prospectivo de una cohorte de niños de guardería, hecho de septiembre de 1997 a septiembre de 1999 entre 53 niños asistentes a la guardería del Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez, atendida por 20 empleados. Todos los participantes fueron seguidos en forma prospectiva, tomándose exudado nasofaríngeo cada cuatro meses. Los S. pneumoniae aislados se tipificaron y sometieron a pruebas de sensibilidad a diversos fármacos. Las razones de momios y la prueba exacta de Fisher o ji cuadrada se efectuaron a través de tablas de contingencia; se utilizaron intervalos de confianza a 95% para las razones de momios. Para el análisis se empleó el programa estadístico EPI INFO, versión 6.04 a. Resultados. S. pneumoniae se recuperó de 45/53 niños en una o más de las tomas. Se aisló un total de 178 cepas. El promedio de portador fue de 47%. Sólo siete adultos adquirieron un neumococo durante el estudio. Los tipos 6, 14, 19 y 23 representaron 77% del total. Se encontró elevada resistencia a la penicilina y eritromicina. Conclusiones. El estado de portador nasofaríngeo de S. pneumoniae, es un proceso dinámico. La colonización ocurre durante los primeros meses de vida y comprende solamente unos cuantos serotipos de neumococo. El estado portador disminuye conforme avanza la edad. Se encontró alta proporción de portadores con cepas resistentes de neumococo. Los niños que recibieron varios cursos de antimicrobianos, fueron los que mostraron mayor riesgo de presentar estado portador.

OBJETIVO: Determinar la susceptibilidad antimicrobiana de Streptococcus pyogenes con el fin de estimar la prevalencia de los fenotipos de resistencia a los macrólidos. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se realizó un estudio de tipo transversal, en 1999, en el que se evaluaron 100 cepas de S. pyogenes, aislados en el Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez, en el lapso comprendido entre 1992 y 1998, procedentes de niños con faringoamigdalitis, conservadas en congelación en el laboratorio de bacteriología hasta su procesamiento. Se determinó la susceptibilidad antimicrobiana a algunos beta-lactámicos, macrólidos y clindamicina. La resistencia a eritromicina se probó por medio de la prueba de difusión de doble disco. Se calcularon medidas de tendencia central. RESULTADOS: Todas las cepas fueron sensibles a los beta-lactámicos y clindamicina; 16% fueron resistentes a los macrólidos, y todas correspondieron al fenotipo M. CONCLUSIONES: Es conveniente realizar periódicamente pruebas de escrutinio para conocer los posibles cambios en los patrones de sensibilidad estreptocócica.OBJECTIVE: To determine the antibiotic susceptibility of recent isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes and to evaluate the prevalence of macrolide-resistant phenotypes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 1999, we conducted a cross-sectional study at Mexico Children's Hospital "Federico Gomez", to analyze one hundred strains of S. pyogenes isolated from 1992 to 1998, in children with uncomplicated pharyngotonsillitis. Strains were frozen at the bacteriology lab until they were analyzed. Strains were tested for susceptibility against some beta-lactams, macrolides and clindamycin. Double-disk testing was carried out to evaluate erythromycin-resistant phenotypes. Data are presented using central tendency measures. RESULTS: All tested strains were not resistant to beta-lactams and clindamycin; 16% of the strains were resistant to macrolides and all of them belonged to phenotype M. CONCLUSIONS: Susceptibility testing is recommended to identify possible changes in antibiotic resistance to streptococci.

OBJETIVO: Evaluar la susceptibilidad antimicrobiana de Streptococcus pneumoniae aislado del líquido cefalorraquídeo de niños con meningitis, así como describir y comparar las características clínicas y microbiológicas, el tratamiento y la evolución del padecimiento entre niños infectados con cepas sensibles y resistentes a la penicilina y la cefalosporina. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Treinta y ocho niños con meningitis neumocócica fueron incluidos prospectivamente en el Programa Institucional de Vigilancia de las Infecciones Neumocócicas, durante el lapso 1994-1998. Los datos clínicos y de laboratorio se colectaron de cada expediente. RESULTADOS: Del total de niños, 63% era menor de dos años de edad, 28.9% mostró cepas insensibles a la penicilina, 18.4% tenía resistencia intermedia, y 10.5% tenía resistencia elevada. El 2.6% mostró también resistencia a la cefotaxima. La única característica (por la prueba exacta de Fisher) asociada con la resistencia fue: enfermedad de base previa al proceso (pOBJECTIVE: To evaluate the susceptibility to antibiotics of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from cerebrospinal fluid of children with meningitis. To describe and compare the clinical and microbiological characteristics, treatment and outcome among children infected with strains either susceptible or resistant to penicillin and cephalosporin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 38 children with pneumococcal meningitis were prospectively enrolled in the Institutional Surveillance Program for Pneumococcal Infections during 1994-1998. Clinical and laboratory data were collected by chart review. RESULTS: Of the 38 children, 24 (63%) were less than 2 years of age, 11 (28.9%) had drug-resistant S. pneumoniae, 18.4% had intermediate resistance, 10.5% high level resistance and 2.6% also showed high level resistance to cefotaxime. This article explains the features and qualities of employing a thinned manufacturing fiber to assemble a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for detecting two physical variables: temperature and curvature. The MZI comprises a filter by splicing core-offset sections of a thinned fiber (TF) cladding diameter of 80 μm in an SMF-TF-SMF configuration. The TF splices act as the arms of the MZI, while the mismatch diameter sections serve as optical fiber couplers. The optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) detects the transmitted light and analyzes its optical transmission characteristics, showing 11 peaks of modal interferences into the longitude region. As a result of the experimental arrangement, the curvature and temperature sensitivities are 0.49 nm/m−1, 0.01 nm/°C, and 0.09 nm/°C for temperatures of 0–60 °C and 70–130 °C, respectively. The proposed sensor has potential advantages for measuring refractive index, pH, torsion, curvature, and temperature.

This study comprehensively explores the intricate hydrodynamic and geomorphological processes that affect the Sulina Channel and bar area. It employs advanced hydrodynamic, wave, and sediment transport models to simulate the influence of marine currents, waves, and shipping traffic on sediment transport and deposition patterns, providing valuable insights for maintaining navigable conditions in the Sulina Channel. It is shown that sediment deposition is highly dynamic, particularly in the Sulina bar area, where rapid sediment recolonization occurs within one to two months after dredging. The simulation indicates that vessels with drafts of 11.5 m cause notable erosion. In comparison, drafts of 7 m have a minimal impact on sediment transport, emphasizing the importance of managing vessel drafts to mitigate sediment disturbances. This research highlights and quantifies the siltation phenomenon from the Black Sea to the mouth of the Sulina Channel, effectively addressing the challenges posed by natural and anthropogenic factors to ensure the Channel’s sustainability and operational efficiency.

Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) systems are extensively used in composite materials for applications in the transportation, marine, and infrastructure sectors. There are continually evolving formulations of UPRs that need to be evaluated and optimized for processing. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) provides valuable insight into the non-isothermal and isothermal behavior of UPRs within a prescribed temperature range. In the present work, non-isothermal DSC tests were carried out between temperatures of 0.0 °C and 250 °C, through different heating and cooling ramp rates. The isothermal DSC tests were carried out between 0.0 and 170 °C. The instantaneous rate of cure of the tested temperatures were measured. The application of an autocatalytic model in a calculator was used to simulate curing behaviors under different processing conditions. As the temperature increased from 10 °C up to 170 °C, the rate of cure reduced, and the heat of reaction increased. The simulated cure behavior from the DSC data showed that the degree of cure (α) maximum value of 71.25% was achieved at the highest heating temperature of 85 °C. For the low heating temperature, i.e., 5 °C, the maximum degree of cure (α) did not exceed 12% because there was not enough heat to activate the catalyst to crosslink further.

In recent years, multi-person pose forecasting has gained significant attention due to its potential applications in various fields such as computer vision, robotics, sports analysis, and human-robot interaction. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning model for multi-person pose forecasting called MPFSIR (multi-person pose forecasting and social interaction recognition) that achieves comparable results with state-of-the-art models, but with up to 30 times fewer parameters. In addition, the model includes a social interaction prediction component to model and predict interactions between individuals. We evaluate our model on three benchmark datasets: 3DPW, CMU-Mocap, and MuPoTS-3D, compare it with state-of-the-art methods, and provide an ablation study to analyze the impact of the different model components. Experimental results show the effectiveness of MPFSIR in accurately predicting future poses and capturing social interactions. Furthermore, we introduce the metric MW-MPJPE to evaluate the performance of pose forecasting, which focuses on motion dynamics. Overall, our results highlight the potential of MPFSIR for predicting the poses of multiple people and understanding social dynamics in complex scenes and in various practical applications, especially where computational resources are limited. Gulls act as intermediaries in the exchange of microorganisms between the environment and human settlements, including Salmonella spp. This study assessed the antimicrobial resistance and molecular profiles of Salmonella spp. isolates obtained from fecal samples of gulls in the city of Porto, Portugal, in 2008 and 2023 and from water samples in 2023. Antimicrobial susceptibility profiling revealed an improvement in the prevalence (71% to 17%) and antimicrobial resistance between the two collection dates. Two isolate collections from both 2008 and 2023 underwent serotyping and whole-genome sequencing, revealing genotypic changes, including an increased frequency in the monophasic variant of S. Typhimurium. qacE was identified in 2008 and 2023 in both water and fecal samples, with most isolates exhibiting an MDR profile. The most frequently observed plasmid types were IncF in 2008 (23%), while IncQ1 predominated in 2023 (43%). Findings suggest that Salmonella spp. circulate between humans, animals, and the environment. However, the genetic heterogeneity among the isolates from the gulls’ feces and the surface water may indicate a complex ecological and evolutionary dynamic shaped by changing conditions. The observed improvements are likely due to measures to reduce biological contamination and antimicrobial resistance. Nevertheless, additional strategies must be implemented to reduce the public health risk modeled by the dissemination of pathogens by gulls.

ObjectivesVirtual reality (VR) offers an ecological setting and the possibility of altered visual feedback during head movements useful for vestibular research and treatment of vestibular disorders. There is however no data quantifying vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during head impulse test (HIT) in VR. The main objective of this study is to assess the feasibility and performance of eye and head movement measurements of healthy subjects in a VR environment during high velocity horizontal head rotation (VR-HIT) under a normal visual feedback condition. The secondary objective is to establish the feasibility of VR-HIT recordings in the same group of normal subjects but under altered visual feedback conditions.DesignTwelve healthy subjects underwent video HIT using both a standard setup (vHIT) and VR-HIT. In VR, eye and head positions were recorded by using, respectively, an imbedded eye tracker and an infrared motion tracker. Subjects were tested under four conditions, one reproducing normal visual feedback and three simulating an altered gain or direction of visual feedback. During these three altered conditions the movement of the visual scene relative to the head movement was decreased in amplitude by 50% (half), was nullified (freeze) or was inverted in direction (inverse).ResultsEye and head motion recording during normal visual feedback as well as during all 3 altered conditions was successful. There was no significant difference in VOR gain in VR-HIT between normal, half, freeze and inverse conditions. In the normal condition, VOR gain was significantly but slightly (by 3%) different for VR-HIT and vHIT. Duration and amplitude of head impulses were significantly greater in VR-HIT than in vHIT. In all three altered VR-HIT conditions, covert saccades were present in approximatively one out of four trials.ConclusionOur VR setup allowed high quality recording of eye and head data during head impulse test under normal and altered visual feedback conditions. This setup could be used to investigate compensation mechanisms in vestibular hypofunction, to elicit adaptation of VOR in ecological settings or to allow objective evaluation of VR-based vestibular rehabilitation.

Abstract Background As paediatric cancer survivors are living into adulthood, they suffer from the age‐related, accelerated decline of functional skeletal muscle tissue, termed sarcopenia. With ionizing radiation (radiotherapy) at the core of paediatric cancer therapies, its direct and indirect effects can have lifelong negative impacts on paediatric growth and maintenance of skeletal muscle. Utilizing our recently developed preclinical rhabdomyosarcoma mouse model, we investigated the late effects of paediatric radiation treatment on skeletal muscles from late adolescent (8 weeks old) and middle‐aged (16 months old) mice. Methods Paediatric C57BL/6J male mice (3 weeks old) were injected with rhabdomyosarcoma cells into their right hindlimbs, and then fractionated irradiation (3 × 8.2 Gy) was administered to those limbs at 4 weeks old to eliminate the tumours. Radiation‐alone and tumour‐irradiated mice were assessed at either 8 weeks (3 weeks post‐irradiation) or 16 months (14 months post‐irradiation) of age for muscle physiology, myofibre characteristics, cell loss, histopathology, fibrosis, inflammatory gene expression, and fibrotic gene expression. In the socio-ecological system of the Mayan octopus, climate change, natural variability and human decisions impact the dynamics and population structure of the octopus. Since fishing decisions have been made out of synchrony concerning the octopus’s natural response, the system’s sustainability is put at risk. Sustainability is a socially desirable, environmentally necessary, and economically viable goal; since it contributes positively to food security, ways, and lifestyles. The objective of this work is to deepen the study of the perception of the fishermen of Progreso, Yucatán regarding the interactions between the Mayan octopus, the variability in the environment, the governance system, and fishing decisions. It was developed from a qualitative and quantitative approach, and bonds of trust were created for a year adopting an ethnographic approach to deepen the use of language, feelings, and emotions. To obtain information, open and semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and documentary research were carried out. For the analysis and evaluation of perceptions and fishing decisions, a non-parametric test was used through the modeling of structural equations with Partial Least Squares (PLS). It was found that, although the quantity to be captured is strongly influenced by the market, the strong incidence of changes in the environment on capture decisions stands out among the results. The experiences and knowledge of the fishermen about the marine environment represent an opportunity to contribute to the process of evolution of the socio-ecological system of the Mayan octopus, towards the establishment of norms and agreements between the different actors and contribute to the construction of resilience and sustainability against the overexploitation and environmental variability.

When describing motion along both the horizontal and vertical axes, languages from different families express the elements encoding verticality before those coding for horizontality (e.g., going up right instead of right up). In light of the motor grounding of language, the present study investigated whether the prevalence of verticality in Path expression also governs the trajectory of arm biological movements. Using a 3D virtual-reality setting, we tracked the kinematics of hand pointing movements in five spatial directions, two of which implied the vertical and horizontal vectors equally (i.e., up right +45° and bottom right −45°). Movement onset could be prompted by visual or auditory verbal cues, the latter being canonical in French (“en haut à droite”/up right) or not (“à droite en haut”/right up). In two experiments, analyses of the index finger kinematics revealed a significant effect of gravity, with earlier acceleration, velocity, and deceleration peaks for upward (+45°) than downward (−45°) movements, irrespective of the instructions. Remarkably, confirming the linguistic observations, we found that vertical kinematic parameters occurred earlier than horizontal ones for upward movements, both for visual and congruent verbal cues. Non-canonical verbal instructions significantly affected this temporal dynamic: for upward movements, the horizontal and vertical components temporally aligned, while they reversed for downward movements where the kinematics of the vertical axis was delayed with respect to that of the horizontal one. This temporal dynamic is so deeply anchored that non-canonical verbal instructions allowed for horizontality to precede verticality only for movements that do not fight against gravity. Altogether, our findings provide new insights into the embodiment of language by revealing that linguistic path may reflect the organization of biological movements, giving priority to the vertical axis.

The current requirements of industrialized countries require the use of as much renewable energy as possible. One significant problem with renewable energy is that the produced power fluctuates. Currently, the only method available for energy compensation in the shortest time is given by hydroelectric power plants. Instead, hydroelectric power plants (especially the plants equipped with hydraulic turbines with fixed blades) are designed to operate in the vicinity of the optimal operating point with a maximum ±10% deviation. The energy market requires that hydraulic turbines operate in an increasingly wide area between −35% to 20% from the optimum operating point. Operation of hydraulic turbines far from the optimum operating point involves the appearance downstream of the turbine of a decelerated swirling flow with hydraulic instabilities (known in the literature as the vortex rope). The main purpose of this paper is to investigate numerically a new concept by using a free runner downstream on the main hydraulic runner turbine more precisely in the draft tube cone. The free runner concept requires rotations at the runaway speed with vanishing mechanical torque. The main purpose is to redistribute the total pressure and the moment between the shaft and the periphery. In addition, the free runner does not modify the operating point of the main hydraulic turbine runner.

To optimize irrigation, agronomists need to modulate crop water productivity (CWP) throughout phenology. We compared regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) and sustained deficit irrigation (SDI) in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. var. Blanoro), expecting RDI during vegetative growth (VG) to enhance CWP, as opposed to flowering (F) and pod-filling (PF) stages. The effects of RDI and SDI on grain yield, plant height, weight, grain caliber, pods and grains per plant, harvest index, and CWP, were tested through a complete randomized block experiment during the years 2020 and 2021, comparing full irrigation (FI, ETc = 100%), SDI (SDI75, ETc = 75% during all stages), and six RDI treatments varying in ETc% across phenology: VG50, VG75, F50, F75, PF50, and PF75. VG75 had higher CWP while minimizing impacts on productivity. During 2020, the plants were taller (0.44 ± 4.4 m), and increased in harvest index (0.47 ± 0.06), and CWP (0.90 ± 0.2 kg m−3) (p < 0.05), while in 2021, plants were heavier (11.4 ± 2.8 g) and increased in caliber (46.1 ± 3.0 grains); grain yield did not differ between the years (p ˃ 0.05), reaching 861.8 (2020) and 944.7 kg ha−1 (2021). Our results highlight the relevance of maintaining 100% ETc during flowering, and the maintenance of RDI at 75% ETc during vegetative growth.

Background: People who inject drugs (PWID) are the key population at risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. In this study, HCV infection among PWID was carried out with the objective of determining the proportion of hepatitis C antibody-positive individuals in the state of Manipur, in Manipur, a small northeastern state of India. Aims: The present study aims to establish prevalence data of hepatitis C antibody among population in the state of Manipur, India. The study was conducted from July to December 2018 in the nine districts of state of Manipur. Blood samples were collected for HCV testing; along with this, we conducted awareness sessions during camps. Pre- and post-tests were done using a questionnaire. A total of 2219 participants are PWID and their spouses were enrolled. Results: Male: female ratio was 1885/334. Majorities of the participants were from 25 to 44 years of age. Forty-three per cent were positive in the screening. Ukhrul district has the highest HCV positive closely followed by Churachandpur district. About 13.5% of participants with known human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status were positive of HCV. Conclusions: HCV infection in PWID in Manipur, Northeast of India, is 43%, most of them are young and co-infection with HIV is seen in 13.5%.

Abstract This study evaluates the predictive performance of the North American Multi‐model Ensemble (NMME) over Central Africa (CA) using the historical rainfall data. The African Rainfall Climatology Version 2 (ARC2) is used as a substitute for reference observational data to examine the capability of 11 NMME and their NMME ensemble mean (MME) in simulating rainfall. Using the Kling‐Gupta efficiency (KGE), Taylor skill score (TSS), and Heidke skill score, the predictive evaluation of the models is performed from lead 0 to lead 5 of each season. The results show that the NMME models satisfactorily reproduce the bimodal and unimodal structure of rainfall in CA at the lead 0 level of different seasons: December–February (DJF), March–May (MAM), June–August (JJA), and September–November (SON). The pattern correlation coefficient (PCC) shows values of NMME and MME greater than ~0.69 and TSS > 0.60 for all four seasons. The MME presents a maximum in DJF ~0.96 between 0 and 1 month lead time. With the same time scale, just over 85% of the NMME have a KGE between 0 and 0.42. It follows that as the forecast lead time increases, the PCC and TSS of each model become small, with PCC ~0.12 in JJA and DJF, TSS

Chronic inflammation is a feature of age-related regenerative decline in skeletal muscles, but how it directly affects resident muscle stem cell fate and function is unclear. Here, the authors show that Ccr2 signaling in muscle stem cell derived progenitors represses terminal myogenic differentiation, and that targeting Ccr2 on aged myogenic progenitors rejuvenates aged skeletal muscle healing and function.

Localising sounds means having the ability to process auditory cues deriving from the interplay among sound waves, the head and the ears. When auditory cues change because of temporary or permanent hearing loss, sound localization becomes difficult and uncertain. The brain can adapt to altered auditory cues throughout life and multisensory training can promote the relearning of spatial hearing skills. Here, we study the training potentials of sound-oriented motor behaviour to test if a training based on manual actions toward sounds can learning effects that generalize to different auditory spatial tasks. We assessed spatial hearing relearning in normal hearing adults with a plugged ear by using visual virtual reality and body motion tracking. Participants performed two auditory tasks that entail explicit and implicit processing of sound position (head-pointing sound localization and audio-visual attention cueing, respectively), before and after having received a spatial training session in which they identified sound position by reaching to auditory sources nearby. Using a crossover design, the effects of the above-mentioned spatial training were compared to a control condition involving the same physical stimuli, but different task demands (i.e., a non-spatial discrimination of amplitude modulations in the sound). According to our findings, spatial hearing in one-ear plugged participants improved more after reaching to sound trainings rather than in the control condition. Training by reaching also modified head-movement behaviour during listening. Crucially, the improvements observed during training generalize also to a different sound localization task, possibly as a consequence of acquired and novel head-movement strategies.

The generation of mathematical models for the analysis of buildings with multiple thermal zones is a large and complex task. Furthermore, the order and complexity of the dynamical model are increased by the number of included thermal zones. To overcome this problem, this paper presents an algorithm to define the mathematical model automatically, using the geometric and physics parameters as inputs. Additionally, the spatial position of each thermal zone must be recorded in an arrangement called a contact matrix. The algorithm for modeling systems with multiple thermal zones is the main contribution of this work. This algorithm is presented in pseudocode format and as an annex, an implementation in MATLAB software. One of the advantages of this methodology is that it allows us to work with parallelepipeds and not necessarily cubic thermal zones. The algorithm allows us to generate mathematical models with symbolic variables, starting from the knowledge of how many thermal zones compose the system and its geometric organization. This information must be organized in a matrix arrangement called a contact matrix. Different arrays of thermal zones were constructed with wooden boxes to verify the functionality of the models generated with the algorithm. Each case provided information that allowed us to adjust the mathematical models and their simulations, obtaining a range of errors between experimental and simulated temperatures from 2.08 to 5.6, depending on the number of thermal zones studied.

Following superior parietal lobule and intraparietal sulcus (SPL-IPS) damage, optic ataxia patients underestimate the distance of objects in the ataxic visual field such that they produce hypometric pointing errors. The metrics of these pointing errors relative to visual target eccentricity fit the cortical magnification of central vision. The SPL-IPS would therefore implement an active “peripheral magnification” to match the real metrics of the environment for accurate action. We further hypothesized that this active compensation of the central magnification by the SPL-IPS contributes to actual object’ size perception in peripheral vision. Three optic ataxia patients and 10 age-matched controls were assessed in comparing the thickness of two rectangles flashed simultaneously, one in central and another in peripheral vision. The bilateral optic ataxia patient exhibited exaggerated underestimation bias and uncertainty compared to the control group in both visual fields. The two unilateral optic ataxia patients exhibited a pathological asymmetry between visual fields: size perception performance was affected in their contralesional peripheral visual field compared to their healthy side. These results demonstrate that the SPL-IPS contributes to accurate size perception in peripheral vision.

Player pose estimation is particularly important for sports because it provides more accurate monitoring of athlete movements and performance, recognition of player actions, analysis of techniques, and evaluation of action execution accuracy. All of these tasks are extremely demanding and challenging in sports that involve rapid movements of athletes with inconsistent speed and position changes, at varying distances from the camera with frequent occlusions, especially in team sports when there are more players on the field. A prerequisite for recognizing the player’s actions on the video footage and comparing their poses during the execution of an action is the detection of the player’s pose in each element of an action or technique. First, a 2D pose of the player is determined in each video frame, and converted into a 3D pose, then using the tracking method all the player poses are grouped into a sequence to construct a series of elements of a particular action. Considering that action recognition and comparison depend significantly on the accuracy of the methods used to estimate and track player pose in real-world conditions, the paper provides an overview and analysis of the methods that can be used for player pose estimation and tracking using a monocular camera, along with evaluation metrics on the example of handball scenarios. We have evaluated the applicability and robustness of 12 selected 2-stage deep learning methods for 3D pose estimation on a public and a custom dataset of handball jump shots for which they have not been trained and where never-before-seen poses may occur. Furthermore, this paper proposes methods for retargeting and smoothing the 3D sequence of poses that have experimentally shown a performance improvement for all tested models. Additionally, we evaluated the applicability and robustness of five state-of-the-art tracking methods on a public and a custom dataset of a handball training recorded with a monocular camera. The paper ends with a discussion apostrophizing the shortcomings of the pose estimation and tracking methods, reflected in the problems of locating key skeletal points and generating poses that do not follow possible human structures, which consequently reduces the overall accuracy of action recognition.

Users of public transit networks require tools that generate travel plans to traverse them. The main issue is that public transit networks are time and space dependent. Travel plans depend on the current location of users and transit units, along with a set of user preferences and time restrictions. In this work, we propose the design and development of artificial intelligence (AI) planning models for engineering travel plans for such networks. The proposed models consider temporal actions, bus locations, and user preferences as constraints, to restrict the set of travel plans generated. Our approach decouples model design from algorithm construction, providing a greater level of flexibility and richness of solutions. We also introduce an integer linear programming formulation, and a fast preprocessing procedure, to evaluate the quality of the solutions returned by the proposed planning models. Experimental results show that AI planning models can efficiently generate close to optimal solutions. Furthermore, our analysis identifies user preferences as the most critical factor that increases solution complexity for planning models.

Stephanospora mayana is presented as a new species from the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. This species is distinguished by the yellowish pileus, basidiospores with a small corona (4–6 × 1–2.5 µm), and variable size (8.0–17.0 × 6.0–11.0), thin pileus (21–40 µm) and the ecological association to lowland forest with Haematoxylum campechianum, Gymnopodium floribundum, Coccoloba diversifolia, Metopium brownei and Pinus caribaea. It differs from the American species of Stephanospora, like S. michoacanensis and S. chilensis, by its larger basidiospores. Descriptions, photographs and discussions are presented.

Climate change triggers a wide mosaic of regional and local responses, often different to the large-scale variability in magnitude and direction. Because of the psychological connections (cognitive and emotional) with the frequency, intensity and age of a climatic event, people may have the capacity to recognize key variations at lower scales, especially those from which they perceive risk. Yet, the anticipatory actions and social engagement to respond or adapt to climate change are difficult to achieve, mostly when there exists a long psychological distance to climatic phenomena. Research about climate change communication provides clues about the relevance of place-based discussion to gauge risk perception and improve response protocols, their design and prioritization. It argues that strategies and actions required to face climate risks may widely differ depending on the scale and accuracy of the local representations displayed during discussions of climate impacts. This work examines how local attributes (from climate to social) operate and control place-specific risks and priorities, by comparing coastal communities in two locations, Cabo Pulmo, Mexico and Zanzibar, Tanzania, which are subject to different climate dynamics. This paper discusses the need to identify relevant climate risks/responses at the local level and how psycho-social factors (e.g., psychological distance, collective memory, and social engagement) may operate positively for building climate resilience. We also illustrate a workflow to increase and enhance collaboration between researchers and local people by promoting dialogue, participation and narratives that rigorously consider the local knowledge.

Studies on audio-visual interactions in sound localization have primarily focused on the relations between the spatial position of sounds and their perceived visual source, as in the famous ventriloquist effect. Much less work has examined the effects on sound localization of seeing aspects of the visual environment. In this study, we took advantage of an innovative method for the study of spatial hearing – based on real sounds, virtual reality and real-time kinematic tracking – to examine the impact of a minimal visual spatial frame on sound localization. We tested sound localization in normal hearing participants (N=36) in two visual conditions: a uniform gray scene and a simple visual environment comprising only a grid. In both cases, no visual cues about the sound sources were provided. During and after sound emission, participants were free to move their head and eyes without restriction. We found that the presence of a visual spatial frame improved hand-pointing in elevation. In addition, it determined faster first-gaze movements to sounds. Our findings show that sound localization benefits from the presence of a minimal visual spatial frame and confirm the importance of combining kinematic tracking and virtual reality when aiming to reveal the multisensory and motor contributions to spatial-hearing abilities.

Summary: During prepubertal development, muscle stem cells (satellite cells, SCs) actively contribute to myofiber growth. Because some SCs are active during this time, they may be particularly susceptible to damage. Using a Small Animal Radiation Research Platform (SARRP), we investigated the effects of local fractionated radiation treatment on prepubertal SCs. Immediately after this regimen, there was a reduction in SC number. Although surviving SCs had deficiencies in function, some myogenic potential remained. Indeed, some muscle regenerative capacity persisted immediately after irradiation. Lastly, we assessed the long-term consequences of radiation-induced SC loss during prepuberty. We observed a reduction of myofiber size and corresponding loss of nuclei in both fast- and slow-contracting muscles 14 months post-irradiation. Notably, prepubertal SC depletion mimicked these lifelong deficits. This work highlights the susceptibility of prepubertal SCs to radiation exposure. We also reveal the importance of prepubertal SC contribution to the lifelong maintenance of skeletal muscle.

Previous research using immersive virtual reality (VR) has shown that after a short period of embodiment by White people in a Black virtual body, their implicit racial bias against Black people diminishes. Here we tested the effects of some socio-cognitive variables that could contribute to enhancing or reducing the implicit racial bias. The first aim of the study was to assess the beneficial effects of cooperation within a VR scenario, the second aim was to provide preliminary testing of the hypothesis that empathy and political attitudes could contribute to implicit bias about race, while the third aim was to explore the relationship between political attitudes and empathy. We had (Caucasian) participants embodied in a Black virtual body and engaged either in a cooperative (Coop group) or in a non-cooperative (Neutral group) activity with a confederate experimenter embodying another Black avatar. Before and after VR, we measured participants’ implicit racial bias by means of Implicit Association Test (IAT) and their perceived closeness toward the confederate experimenter. Before VR we also assessed participants’ political attitudes and empathy traits. Results revealed that, as compared to the Neutral group, the Coop group showed lower IAT scores after the social interaction. Interestingly, in the Neutral but not the Coop group the perceived closeness toward the confederate experimenter was associated with the initial racial bias: the more the participants reduced their distance, the more they reduced their IAT score. Moreover, reported traits of empathy and political attitudes significantly explained the variance observed in the initial implicit bias, with perspective-taking, empathic concern, and personal distress being significant predictors of the IAT scores. Finally, there was a relationship between political attitudes and empathy: the more participants considered themselves as left-wing voters, the higher their perspective-taking and empathic concern scores. We discuss these findings within the neuroscientific and social cognition field and encourage scholars from different domains to further explore whether and under which conditions a given manipulation for reducing racial bias could be efficiently transposed in VR.

The paper explores a tandem configuration of three-blade impellers in a stirred reactor. The working fluid is a liquid-solid mixture and the stirring mechanism fitted with the two impellers must prevent the sedimentation of solid particles while homogenously dispersing them in the bulk liquid. The present numerical investigation, performed with the expert software Ansys® Fluent, Release 16, employs the Eulerian multiphase model along with the RNG k–ε turbulence model to simulate the free-surface liquid–solid flows in the baffled stirred reactor. A sliding mesh approach is used to model the impellers rotation. The tandem configuration is clearly superior to a single impeller, while the existing electrical motor that drives the stirring mechanism still provides the necessary power.

The present study examines the possibility of using an industrial stirred chemical reactor, originally employed for liquid–liquid mixtures, for operating with two-phase liquid–solid suspensions. It is critical when obtaining a high-quality chemical product that the solid phase remains suspended in the liquid phase long enough that the chemical reaction takes place. The impeller was designed for the preparation of a chemical product with a prescribed composition. The present study aims at finding, using a numerical simulation analysis, if the performance of the original impeller is suitable for obtaining a new chemical product with a different composition. The Eulerian multiphase model was employed along with the renormalization (RNG) k-ε turbulence model to simulate liquid–solid flow with a free surface in a stirred tank. A sliding-mesh approach was used to model the impeller rotation with the commercial CFD code, FLUENT. The results obtained underline that 25% to 40% of the solid phase is sedimented on the lower part of the reactor, depending on the initial conditions. It results that the impeller does not perform as needed; hence, the suspension time of the solid phase is not long enough for the chemical reaction to be properly completed.

A comprehensive overview of the catalysts developed for the electrooxidation of glycerol with the aim of producing selectively value-added compounds is proposed in the present contribution. By presenting the main results reported in the literature on glycerol electrooxidation in acidic and alkaline media, using different kinds of catalytic materials (monometallic catalysts based on platinum group metals and non-noble metals, multimetallic alloys, or modification of surfaces by adatoms, etc.) and under different experimental conditions, some general trends concerning the effects of catalyst composition and structure, of reaction medium and of the electrode potential to enhance the activity for the glycerol oxidation reaction and of the selectivity toward a unique value-added product will be presented and discussed. The objective is to provide a guideline for the development of electrochemical systems which allow performing the electrooxidation of glycerol at the rate and selectivity as high as possible.

An investigation into the effect of preheating the powder particles versus not preheating before mixing it with an aluminium slurry was carried out. This was seen as way of overcoming the challenge of wettability which often occurs when powder particles are added to a melted metal for the purpose of developing a metal matrix composite. In this study, non – preheated, 2 w.% preheated and 4 w.% preheated palm kernel shell ash powder was used to develop an aluminium matrix composite (AMC) via stir casting method. Mechanical properties revealed that AMC with 4 w.% pks ash inclusion has the highest Vickers Hardness value. Meanwhile, optical micrographs and scanning electron micrograph show that the pks ash both non – preheated and preheated are homogenously distributed into the matrix. This is further confirmed by the energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping of the various samples. Although pks ash particles are only visible on the optical microscope micrographs, the elemental analysis of the various samples through EDS show a strong presence of carbon at various degree proving the presence of pks ash in the composite. Overall, preheating does not significantly affect the surface morphology of the AMCs based on the derived optical and scanning electron micrographs and AMC with higher content of pks ash particles seems to have better mechanical properties.

When converting a baffled stirred reactor to work with a different fluid, usually the original impeller must be replaced with a customized one. If the original impeller was designed for mixing liquids, its performance for liquid–solid suspensions may not be satisfactory. A case study is presented, where a two-blade original impeller is replaced with a new three-blade design. The new impeller shows clear improvements in mixing a liquid–solid suspension, while keeping the shaft power practically at the same level. As a result, a practically homogenous liquid–solid mixture is obtained, thus ensuring the required quality of the final product. The present numerical investigations employ the Eulerian multiphase model with renormalization (RNG) k–ε turbulence model to simulate the three-dimensional unsteady free-surface liquid–solid flow in a stirred tank. A sliding mesh approach was used to account for the impeller rotation within the expert code, FLUENT 16. The comparative quantitative analysis of the solid phase distribution and the relevant velocity profiles show that the new design of three-blade-impeller is significantly increasing the sedimentation time of the solid phase beyond the chemical reaction specific time. The necessary power to drive the new impeller has a slightly higher value than for the original impeller but it can be sustained by the existing driving system.

Regeneration of skeletal muscle requires the continued presence of quiescent muscle stem cells (satellite cells), which become activated in response to injury. Here, we report that whole-body protein arginine methyltransferase PRMT7−/− adult mice and mice conditionally lacking PRMT7 in satellite cells using Pax7-CreERT2 both display a significant reduction in satellite cell function, leading to defects in regenerative capacity upon muscle injury. We show that PRMT7 is preferentially expressed in activated satellite cells and, interestingly, PRMT7-deficient satellite cells undergo cell-cycle arrest and premature cellular senescence. These defects underlie poor satellite cell stem cell capacity to regenerate muscle and self-renew after injury. PRMT7-deficient satellite cells express elevated levels of the CDK inhibitor p21CIP1 and low levels of its repressor, DNMT3b. Restoration of DNMT3b in PRMT7-deficient cells rescues PRMT7-mediated senescence. Our findings define PRMT7 as a regulator of the DNMT3b/p21 axis required to maintain muscle stem cell regenerative capacity.

As a continuation of our previous work, where a Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution was found to model a collective’s reaction times, in this work we will carry out a percentile study of the χ distribution for some freedom ranging from k = 2 to k = 10. The most commonly used percentiles in the biomedical and behavioral sciences have been included in the analysis. We seek to provide a look-up table with percentile ratios, taken symmetrically about the median, such that this distribution can be identified in practice in an easy way. We have proven that these ratios do not depend upon the variance chosen for the k generating Gaussians. In general, the χ probability density, generalized to take any value of the variance, represents an ideal gas in a k-dimensional space. We also derive an approximate expression for the median of the generalized χ distribution. In the second part of the results, we will focus on the practical case of k = 3, which represents the ideal gas in physics, and models quite well the reaction times of a human collective. Accurately, we will perform a more detailed scrutiny of the percentiles for the reaction time distribution of a sample of 50 school-aged children (7200 reaction times).

The shrimp fishery off the Mexican Pacific coast is the country's most important fishery from the economic standpoint. However, it faces serious problems, including the fleet's overcapitalization and age, in addition to the environmental variability that affects the size of catches. Thus, this activity depends on a variety of factors that add uncertainty to the profitability of fishing vessels. This study aims to estimate the probability of success and economic risk of "type vessels" under two different environmental variability scenarios in the Gulf of California. The results from the economic simulation pointed to the vessel type used in Guaymas (Sonora) as the most efficient one under a neutral climate change scenario, showing a homogeneous behaviour in physical characteristics and mode of operation. By contrast, under a scenario of a monotonic rise in sea surface temperature, the shrimp fishery faces a greater risk of incurring economic losses. The simulated climate behaviour scenarios revealed that the activity involves a moderate economic profitability under the neutral scenario; however, under the warming scenario, profitability may be low or even nil due to the risks and uncertainty resulting from the influence of environmental phenomena.

In this paper, we introduce a novel passive control method to mitigate the unsteadiness effects associated to the swirling flows with self-induced instabilities. The control method involves a progressive throttling cross-section flow at the outlet of the conical diffuser. It adjusts the cross-section area with a diaphragm while maintaining all positions of the circular shape centered on the axis. It improves the pressure recovery on the cone wall while the pressure fluctuations associated with the self-induced instability are mitigated as it adjusts the cross-section area. It can adjust the diaphragm in correlation with the operating conditions of the turbine. We investigated the passive control method on a swirl generator, which provides a similar flow as a hydraulic turbine operated at a partial discharge. The plunging and rotating components are discriminated using the pressure fluctuation on the cone wall to provide a clear view of the effects induced by this passive control method. As a result, the novel proof of concept examined in this paper offers valuable benefits as it fulfils a good balance between the dynamical behavior and the hydraulic losses.

In the present work, we analyze the influence of the designer’s choice of values for the human metabolic index (met) and insulation by clothing (clo) that can be selected within the ISO 7730 for the calculation of the energy demand of buildings. To this aim, we first numerically modeled, using TRNSYS, two buildings in different countries and climatologies. Then, we consistently validated our simulations by predicting indoor temperatures and comparing them with measured data. After that, the energy demand of both buildings was obtained. Subsequently, the variability of the set-point temperature concerning the choice of clo and met, within limits prescribed in ISO 7730, was analyzed using a Monte Carlo method. This variability of the interior comfort conditions has been finally used in the numerical model previously validated, to calculate the changes in the energy demand of the two buildings. Therefore, this work demonstrated that the diversity of possibilities offered by ISO 7730 for the choice of clo and met results, depending on the values chosen by the designer, in significant differences in indoor comfort conditions, leading to non-negligible changes in the calculations of energy consumption, especially in the case of big buildings.

El presente trabajo fue realizado en la Finca "El Hato Ganadero", ubicada en la ciudad de Estelí, Región I de Nicaragua. Se evaluó la utilización de la sacharina (caña enriquecida) como suplemento en la alimentación de vacas lecheras durante un período experimental de 64 días de la época seca (enero a marzo de 1992). Se usó un diseño estadístico de sobrecambio con cuatro subperíodos de 14 días cada uno. Se utilizaron seis vacas (tres por grupo), de genotipo cruzado (Pardo Suizo x Cebú), seleccionadas según su estado de lactancia, edad, producción de leche y fecha de parto. Las vacas del grupo experimental, recibieron como suplemento alimenticio 4,12 kg de sacharina, ofrecidos diariamente a libre acceso, después del ordeño. El grupo control recibió la alimentación ofrecida por el productor, al resto del hato en producción. Al inicio de la prueba, las vacas presentaron un promedio de 500 kg de peso vivo y una producción de 8 litros de leche, en un ordeño al día. El presente trabajo fue realizado en diferentes fincas del trópico seco de Nicaragua. Las experiencias se llevaron a cabo principalmente en los municipios de Estelí, Somoto, Condega, Pueblo Nuevo y Limay, área de cobertura del Proyecto PRONORTE. En esta región se presenta una precipitación pluvial de alrededor de 600 a 900 m con una distribución errática, y una época seca muy marcada y con fuertes deficiencias en la disponibilidad de alimentos para el ganado. Los hornos forrajeros fueron construidos con la participación de los productores, quienes fueron informados de los pormenores de la tecnología a efecto de que la experiencia fuera conducida en calidad de validación. Los costos de kg de materia seca del forraje del horno forrajero fue de $0,05 lo que lo hace asequible a los productores de la región, además de utilizar residuos de las cosechas de granos básicos que de otra manera perderían calidad y cantidad. La aceptabilidad de los hornos forrajeros fue alta (100%) y la adopción alcanzó el 96%, cifras que indican que esta tecnología es apropiada y adaptada a las condiciones socioe-conómicas de los productores de la región seca del norte de Nicaragua.

Rightward prism adaptation ameliorates neglect symptoms while leftward prism adaptation (LPA) induces neglect-like biases in healthy individuals. Similarly, inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) induces neglect-like behavior, whereas on the left PPC it ameliorates neglect symptoms and normalizes hyperexcitability of left hemisphere parietal-motor (PPC-M1) connectivity. Based on this analogy we hypothesized that LPA increases PPC-M1 excitability in the left hemisphere and decreases it in the right one. In an attempt to shed some light on the mechanisms underlying LPA’s effects on cognition, we investigated this hypothesis in healthy individuals measuring PPC-M1 excitability with dual-site paired-pulse TMS (ppTMS). We found a left hemisphere increase and a right hemisphere decrease in the amplitude of motor evoked potentials elicited by paired as well as single pulses on M1. While this could indicate that LPA biases interhemispheric connectivity, it contradicts previous evidence that M1-only MEPs are unchanged after LPA. A control experiment showed that input-output curves were not affected by LPA per se. We conclude that LPA combined with ppTMS on PPC-M1 differentially alters the excitability of the left and right M1.

The seasonal and interannual variability of vertical transport (upwelling/downwelling) has been relatively well studied, mainly for the California Current System, including low-frequency changes and latitudinal heterogeneity. The aim of this work was to identify potentially predictable patterns in upwelling/downwelling activity along the North American west coast and discuss their plausible mechanisms. To this purpose we applied the min/max Autocorrelation Factor technique and time series analysis. We found that spatial co-variation of seawater vertical movements present three dominant low-frequency signals in the range of 33, 19 and 11 years, resembling periodicities of: atmospheric circulation, nodal moon tides and solar activity. Those periodicities might be related to the variability of vertical transport through their influence on dominant wind patterns, the position/intensity of pressure centers and the strength of atmospheric circulation cells (wind stress). The low-frequency signals identified in upwelling/downwelling are coherent with temporal patterns previously reported at the study region: sea surface temperature along the Pacific coast of North America, catch fluctuations of anchovy Engraulis mordax and sardine Sardinops sagax, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, changes in abundance and distribution of salmon populations, and variations in the position and intensity of the Aleutian low. Since the vertical transport is an oceanographic process with strong biological relevance, the recognition of their spatio-temporal patterns might allow for some reasonable forecasting capacity, potentially useful for marine resources management of the region.

El uso de indicadores biológicos es una herramienta útil para la descripción de las comunidades y permite ahorrar recursos en programas de monitoreo. Con el fin de evaluar el potencial bioindicador de grupos taxonómicos superiores en el Parque Nacional Cabo Pulmo, México, se construyeron modelos de regresión múltiple por pasos con valores de abundancia agrupados a nivel género y familia como predictores, mediante el uso de variables dependientes, los índices ecológicos de diversidad (H’), equidad (J’) y distintividad taxonómica (Δ*). Posteriormente se compararon los resultados de los modelos contra los valores de los índices ecológicos observados en un muestreo independiente. Los resultados mostraron que todos los modelos fueron altamente significativos; los valores más altos del coeficiente de determinación se obtuvieron en las regresiones aplicadas a H’, mientras que las usadas por Δ* fueron las menos precisas. Los resultados sugieren que los modelos predictivos aquí generados son susceptibles de ser aplicados en un programa de monitoreo. Este estudio sugiere la implementación de un programa de monitoreo a largo plazo basado en bioindicadores de la estructura comunitaria de peces en el Parque Nacional Cabo Pulmo, el cual combine la precisión con la facilidad de obtención de datos.
