Abstract This paper investigates the electrical, morphological, and mechanical behavior of ultrathin layer-by-layer polyaniline/poly(vinyl sulfonic acid) (PANI/PVS) ultrathin films for ammonia gas sensing. Atomic force microscopy shows that the PANI/PVS surface's roughness increases almost linearly with the number of PANI/PVS bilayers, while the surface morphology varies from a rod-like structure to a film-like architecture. Impedance measurements and their representation by a Cole-Cole model confirm this transition at ~15 bilayers. The designed sensor shows low response time (< 1 min), an optimal operating frequency range (1–100 Hz), high stability and sensibility to ammonia (~ 98 kΩ/ppm), and low sensibility to strain (~ 3.6 kΩ/%). This study suggests that hopping carriers' concentration remains constant, and hopping carriers' mobility changes with the number of bilayers. The simultaneous analysis of morphology with complex impedance measurements is a strategy for enhancing the electrical performance of low-cost and flexible organic sensing devices.

Abstract This paper investigates the properties of the polyaniline (PANI) on açaí vegetable fiber (AVF), hereafter referred to as PANI-COATED:AVF. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy showed that the incorporation of PANI produced a linear surface, while optical microscopy images showed that the semiconductor layer was flawed. The complex impedance measurements performed at room temperature indicated that the electrical properties of PANI were fully transferred to the PANI-COATED:AVF and that the Cole-Cole approach dominated over a frequency range from 1 Hz to 100 kHz. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a thermal stability range of 0° to 300°C. Finally, the combination of PANI with AVF was a successful due to the ease of processing and obtaining semiconductor filaments with wide ranges of thermal and electrical stability. The search for an effective etiologic treatment to eliminate Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, has continued for decades and yielded controversial results. In the 1970s, nifurtimox and benznidazole were introduced for clinical assessment, but factors such as parasite resistance, high cellular toxicity, and efficacy in acute and chronic phases of the infection have been debated even today. This study proposes an innovative strategy to support the controlling of the T. cruzi using blue light phototherapy or blue light-emitting diode (LED) intervention. In in vitro assays, axenic cultures of Y and CL strains of T. cruzi were exposed to 460 nm and 40 µW/cm2 of blue light for 5 days (6 h/day), and parasite replication was evaluated daily. For in vivo experiments, C57BL6 mice were infected with the Y strain of T. cruzi and exposed to 460 nm and 7 µW/cm2 of blue light for 9 days (12 h/day). Parasite count in the blood and cardiac tissue was determined, and plasma interleukin (IL-6), tumoral necrosis factor (TNF), chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), and IL-10 levels and the morphometry of the cardiac tissue were evaluated. Blue light induced a 50% reduction in T. cruzi (epimastigote forms) replication in vitro after 5 days of exposure. This blue light-mediated parasite control was also observed by the T. cruzi reduction in the blood (trypomastigote forms) and in the cardiac tissue (parasite DNA and amastigote nests) of infected mice. Phototherapy reduced plasma IL-6, TNF and IL-10, but not CCL2, levels in infected animals. This non-chemical therapy reduced the volume density of the heart stroma in the cardiac connective tissue but did not ameliorate the mouse myocarditis, maintaining a predominance of pericellular and perivascular mononuclear inflammatory infiltration with an increase in polymorphonuclear cells. Together, these data highlight, for the first time, the use of blue light therapy to control circulating and tissue forms of T. cruzi. Further investigation would demonstrate the application of this promising and potential complementary strategy for the treatment of Chagas disease.

The estimated production of world electronic waste until 2017 is approximately 6 Gt. Despite this enormous problem, there are no clear regulations regarding the orientation for disposal or treatment of this type of residuals in many countries. There is a federal public policy in Brazil that supports a network of Computer Reconditioning Centers—CRCs. These CRCs train young people and recover or recycle electronic equipment. Through this work, CRCs produce interlocking plastic pavers for application on pavements from recycled electronic industry waste. This article presents the characterization of these interlocking paver’s mechanical properties when applied on the pavement. This characterization is a necessary step to show the effectiveness of this product. We show that the plastic pavers behave similarly to the artifacts manufactured in concrete, thus creating commercial opportunities for this initiative, and contributing to the Brazilian Solid Waste Policy.

In this work we investigated the effect of visible radiation on the electrical properties of poly[(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene]- MH-PPV films and light emitting diodes. Complex impedance measurements of (Au or ITO)/MH-PPV/(Au or Al) samples were carried out at room temperature and exposed to white light. Over the frequency range from 100 mHz to 2 MHz, the electrical results of Au/MH-PPV/Au was dominated by the Cole-Cole approach, where the electrode influence is negligible. However, some additional influence of the interface was observed to occur when Al was used as electrode. These effects were observed under both dark and visible-light illumination conditions. A simple model based on resistor-capacitor parallel circuits was developed to represent the complex impedance of the samples, thereby separating bulk and interface contributions. We observed that the polymer electrical resistivity decreased while the dielectric constant of the polymer and the thickness of the Al/MH-PPV layer were almost constant with increasing light intensity. The decrease of the polymer layer resistance comes from a better charge injection due to a light induced dissociation of positive charge carriers at the electrode.
