Global climate change has led to an increase in the number of drought events. Agricultural droughts, which are influenced by crops, climate, and soil, are complex and challenging to identify. This study proposed a new index, the available water content of the soil index, based on the soil reservoir theory, which focuses on soil water and considers both crops and soil structure. We constructed the MODCYCLE model to depict soil water dynamics and evaluate agricultural drought by using the available water content of the soil index in a typical North China Plain region. The results showed that the soil in the western and southern regions was relatively dry and that the soil in the eastern and northern regions was humid. Drought occurred owing to the increased water demand during the critical growth period of winter wheat. Irrigation alleviated the drought. When the AWCI is greater than 0.6 in early April, the degree of drought is relatively mild. When the AWCI is less than 0.4, it is very easy to experience severe drought in mid-April.The central and eastern regions were susceptible to drought after mid-April, and the western region experienced drought until late May. Varying soil moisture, particle composition, irrigation, and precipitation conditions influenced the evolution of the drought. Enhancing soil moisture and timely irrigation before the critical growth period of winter wheat effectively prevented severe droughts in the region. The results provide guidance for regional drought monitoring and forecasting, water resource management, and scientific irrigation, effectively ensuring food security.

Climate change has resulted in an increase in extreme rainstorm events, posing the challenges of urban waterlogging and runoff pollution. Low Impact Development (LID) is widely used to address the issues above, but its effectiveness is unknown in mountainous areas. Due to a flash flood and high flood peak, storage pumping stations are also needed to drain. Thus, a framework composed of storage pumping stations and Low Impact Developments (LIDs) was proposed based on the topography and the regional upstream and downstream relationships. The water quantity in this framework is applied to YI County in Hebei Province, China. The results showed that individual LIDs effectively reduced runoff volume, with the implementation area being more crucial than the location. Combining storage pumping stations with LIDs significantly reduces peak outflow and delays it by 5 to 51 min. The combined downstream implementation of storage pumping stations and LIDs yielded the most effective results. These findings offer important insights and management strategies for controlling waterlogging in mountainous cities of developing countries.

Climate change profoundly alters land use in alpine regions, and delving into the evolutionary characteristics of these changes is crucial for the sustainable development of regional land resources and the gradual enhancement of the ecological environment. Taking the source region of the Yangtze and Yellow River (SRYAYE) as a case study, we integrate permafrost and snowfall data into the Future Land Use Simulation model (FLUS). Analyzing historical land use, we predict and simulate the land use scenarios for 2030, 2035, and 2060 under SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5 climates, and conduct a detailed analysis of the scale, composition, and pattern of land use in this area. Scale. The results showed that ① the Kappa coefficient of the improved FLUS model was higher than 0.927, and that the overall accuracy of the simulation was increased by 2.64%; ② the area of forest land and the high-coverage grassland will increase in the future and the center of gravity will migrate to the west, and that the area of moderate and low-coverage grassland will slightly decrease but tend to become green to the west; and ③ the fragmentation degree of the SRYAYE is decreasing, and the influence of human activities on the landscape pattern is weaker than in the past.

Abstract Projecting precipitation changes is essential for researchers to understand climate change impacts on hydrological cycle. This study projected future precipitation over the Hanjiang River Basin (HRB) based on the multimodel ensemble (ME) of six global climate models from Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). An ME method using the fusion of four machine learning (ML) algorithms (random forest [RF], K‐nearest neighbors [KNN], extra tree [ET], and gradient boosting decision tree [GBDT]) was proposed in this study. The future precipitation changes were investigated during 2023–2042 (Near‐term), 2043–2062 (Mid‐term), and 2081–2100 (Long‐term) periods, with reference to the base period 1995–2014, under three integrated scenarios (SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5, and SSP5‐8.5) of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and the representative concentration pathways (RCPs). The results show that: (1) the proposed ME method performs better than the ME mean and individual ML algorithms, with a correlation coefficient value reaching 0.88 and Taylor skill score reaching 0.764. (2) The precipitation under SSP5‐8.5 has the largest upward trend with the annual precipitation variation range of −9.27% to 112.84% from 2023 to 2100, followed by SSP2‐4.5 with −30.48% to 44.67%, and the smallest under SSP1‐2.6 with −37.19% to 37.78%, which show a significant trend of humidification over the HRB in the future. (3) The precipitation changes over the HRB are projected to increase over time, with the largest in the Long‐term, followed by Mid‐term, and the smallest in the Near‐term. (4) The northeastern parts of the HRB are projected to experience a large precipitation in the future, and the southeastern parts are smaller. (5) Uncertainties in the projected precipitation over the HRB still exist, which can be reduced by ME. The findings obtained in this study have important implications for hydrological policymakers to make adaptive strategies to reduce the risks of climate change.

To study the contribution of moisture from different straw-treated and irrigated soil layers to the water consumption of winter wheat in dry farming, a 2-year straw treatment and regulated deficit irrigation experiment was implemented. The field experiment was carried out with 0% (S0), 1% (S1), and 2% (S2) straw returning amounts, and 75 mm (V3), 60 mm (V2), and 45 mm (V1) irrigation volumes. This experiment involved nine treatments, used to quantitatively analyze the ratio and variation of soil water use from different soil layers via the direct contrast method (DCM) and the multiple linear mixed model (MLMM). The results show the following: (1) The distribution of precipitation isotope compositions displayed a repeated trend of first decreasing and then increasing during the study period. Regression analysis showed that the local meteoric water line (LMWL): δD = 6.37δ18O − 3.77 (R2 = 0.832). (2) With increasing soil depth, the δ18O value decreased gradually, and the maximum δ18O value of the soil water within each growth period was distributed at 10 cm. (3) Under the same irrigation amount, δ 18O increased with increasing straw return at 0–20 cm and decreased with increasing straw return at 20–80 cm. (4) The comparison results of the DCM and MLMM were consistent. During the jointing and flowering stages, 0–30 cm soil water was the main source of water for winter wheat. The contribution of soil water below 30 cm had a decreasing trend from the jointing stage to the flowering stage. The average contribution rates of the 0–30 cm soil layer during the jointing and flowering stages were 23.07% and 23.15%, respectively. These findings have important implications for studying the soil water cycle in the context of farming.

To assess the urban waterlogging mitigation effectiveness on low impact development (LID) in semi-mountainous regions, the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) of a semi-mountainous region combined with GIS was generalized. The SWMM was calibrated and validated through maximum seeper depth of the checkpoints, and various LID scenarios have been designed according to local conditions. The discharge processes of outlets, surface runoff, peak flow and peak time were analyzed in different scenarios. The results show that: all the flow processes of outlets in the LID scenario are gentler than that in the status quo scenario, and the effectiveness of LIDs in semi-mountainous regions are different from that in plain regions because of the slope influence; in semi-mountainous regions, the LID effectiveness on surface runoff reduction decreases with the increase in rainfall return period or the extension of rainfall duration, but remains almost unchanged with the increase in rainfall peak coefficient; the LID effectiveness on control peak flow reduction is not remarkable with the change in rainfall characteristics, and the LID effectiveness on peak time delay is poor. This research can provide decision support for regional small-scale measures of urban waterlogging mitigation and reduction in semi-mountainous regions. HIGHLIGHTS The SWMM of a typical semi-mountainous region was established utilizing ArcGIS and the surveyed maximum seeper depth.; The numbers, properties, and locations of LIDs were designed based on the local characteristics.; The results indicated that LIDs effectiveness is related to slope in the study area.; This research can provide technique support to resilient cities design in semi-mountainous regions.;

Urban flooding is increasing due to climate change and the expansion of impervious land surfaces. Green roofs have recently been identified as effective solutions for mitigating urban stormwater. However, discharge routes that involve receiving catchments of stormwater runoff from roofs to mitigate high flows have been limited. Thus, a hydrological model was constructed to investigate the effects of changing discharge routes on stormwater flow. Three hypothetical scenarios were assessed using various combinations of discharge routes and roof types. The reduction effects on outflow and overflow were identified and evaluated across six return periods of designed rainstorms in the Tai Hung Tulip House community in Beijing. The results showed that green roofs, together with the discharge routes connecting to pervious catchments, were effective in reducing peak flow (13.9–17.3%), outflow volume (16.3–27.3%), drainage overflow frequency, and flood duration. Although mitigation can be improved by considering discharge routes, it is limited compared to that achieved by the effects of green roofs. However, integrating green roofs and discharge routes can improve community resilience to rainstorms with longer return periods. These results provide useful information for effective design of future stormwater mitigation and management strategies in small-scale urban areas.

It is reasonable to simulate the hydrologic cycle in regions with drastic land use change using a distributed hydrologic model in the dynamic land use mode (dynamic mode). A new dynamic mode is introduced into an object-oriented modularized model for basin-scale water cycle simulation (MODCYCLE), a distributed hydrologic model based on sub-watersheds, and the hydrological response unit (HRU). The new mode can linearly interpolate data for the years without land use data and consistently transfer HRU water storage between two adjacent years after a land use data update. The hydrologic cycle simulation of the Sanjiang Plain in China was carried out from 2000 to 2014 in the dynamic mode using land use maps of 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2014. Through calibration and validation, the performance of the model reached a satisfactory level. Replacing the land use data of the calibrated model using that of the year 2000, a comparison model in the static land use mode (static mode) was built (i.e., land use unchanged since 2000). The hydrologic effects of land use change were analyzed using the two models. If the land use pattern remained unchanged from 2000, despite the average annual runoff increasing by 4% and the average annual evapotranspiration decreasing by 4% in this region only, the groundwater storage of the plain areas in 2014 would increase by 4.6 bil. m3 compared to that in 2000, rather than the actual decrease of 4.7 bil. m3. The results show that the fluxes associated with groundwater are obviously more disturbed by land use change in the Sanjiang Plain. This study suggests that the dynamic mode should be used to simulate the hydrologic cycle in regions with drastic land use change, and the consistent transfer of HRU water storage may be considered in the dynamic mode.

Urban flooding occurs frequently in many regions of China. To reduce the losses caused by urban flooding, sponge city (SPC) and low-impact development (LID) have been carried out in many Chinese cities. However, urban flooding is influenced by various factors, such as climate, land cover characteristics and nearby river networks, so it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of LID measures. In this study, the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was adopted to simulate historical urban storm processes in the mountainous Fragrance Hills region of Beijing, China. Subsequently, numerical simulations were performed to evaluate how various LID measures (concave greenbelt, permeable pavement, bio-retention, vegetative swales, and comprehensive measures) influenced urban runoff reduction. The results showed that the LID measures are effective in controlling the surface runoff of the storm events with return periods shorter than five years, in particular, for one-year events. Furthermore, the effectiveness on traffic congestion mitigation of several LID measures (concave greenbelt, vegetative swales, and comprehensive measures) was evaluated. However, the effective return periods of storm events are shorter than two years if the effectiveness on traffic congestion relief is considered. In all evaluated aspects, comprehensive measures and concave greenbelts are the most effective, and vegetative swale is the least effective. This indicated that LID measures are less effective for removing ponding from most storm events in a mountainous, low-lying and backward pipeline infrastructure region with pressures from interval flooding and urban waterlogging. The engineering measures including water conservancy projects and pipeline infrastructure construction combined with the non-engineering measures were suggested to effectively control severe urban storms.

This study produced a drought map for the Fenhe River basin covering the period from 150 BC to 2012 using regional historical drought records. Based on meteorological and hydrological features, the characteristics and causes of water scarcity in the Fenhe River basin were examined, along with their impact on the national economy and ecological environment. The effects of water scarcity in the basin on the national economy were determined from agricultural, industrial, and domestic perspectives. The impact on aquatic ecosystems was ascertained through an evolution trend analysis of surface water systems, including rivers, wetlands, and slope ecosystems, and subterranean water systems, including groundwater and karst springs. As a result of these analyses, strategies are presented for coping with water scarcity in this basin, including engineering countermeasures, such as the construction of a water network in Shanxi, and the non-engineering approach of groundwater resource preservation. These comprehensive coping strategies are proposed with the aim of assisting the prevention and control of water scarcity in the arid and semi-arid areas of China.
