Wound healing is rarely seen as a problem in healthy individuals; however, under certain pathophysiological conditions, this process can be impaired, leading to the emergence of chronic wounds, which are themselves a serious public health problem. This work aimed to review the most important recent literature on the use of nanoparticles of Ag, Au, and Zn produced from plant extracts and their application as healing agents. To that end, we provide an insight into the pathophysiology of wound healing and the main routes to obtaining metallic nanoparticles. The methodology of synthesis, which is part of the so-called green synthesis, has been the focus of several studies on the use of medicinal plants as a substrate to produce silver, gold, and zinc nanoparticles. Their use as wound healing agents is closely related to their natural antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cicatrizing properties. Finally, we address in vitro and in vivo studies on the efficiency of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesized from plant extracts and applied to wound healing in different pharmaceutical forms. For instance, the excellent wound contraction rates obtained from silver and gold NPs, respectively, were obtained from Euphorbia milii (92%) and Plectranthus aliciae (almost 97%) extracts in in vivo and in vitro analyses. Based on the satisfactory results, we find that MNPs are a potential therapeutic alternative compared to traditional synthetic healing agents and foresee the production of new pharmaceutical drugs.

Toxicological studies on medicinal plants are essential to ensure their safety and effectiveness in treating various diseases. Despite the species Chrysobalanus icaco L. being popularly used in the treatment of several diseases due to the pharmacological properties of its bioactive compounds, there are few studies in the literature regarding its toxicity regarding reproduction. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the potential embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of the aqueous extract of C. icaco leaves (AECi) on Wistar rats. Animals were given AECi at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg during the pre-implantation and organogenesis periods. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test and Kruskal–Wallis. Pregnant rats treated during the pre-implantation period showed no signs of reproductive toxicity. Rats that received AECi at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg during organogenesis did not exhibit any signs of maternal systemic toxicity or significant differences in gestational and embryotoxic parameters. Some skeletal changes were observed in the treated groups. Therefore, it can be suggested that AECi at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg is safe for treated animals and does not induce reproductive toxicity under the experimental conditions applied, but it also caused low systemic toxicity.

The objective of this work was to prepare different concentrations of liposomes based on lecithin containing quercetin, and evaluate their effect on the properties of galactomannan films obtained from Cassia grandis seeds. Quercetin-loaded lecithin liposomes (QT-LL) were obtained by the ethanol injection method by incorporating quercetin in different concentrations in a previously prepared suspension of lecithin liposomes in water. Following characterization of QT-LLs by zeta potential and dynamic light scattering, QT-LL with 75 µg quercetin/mL suspension was incorporated at different concentrations in galactomannan films. The films obtained were characterized for color, solubility, moisture content (MC), water vapor permeability (WVP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The size of lecithin liposomes with no quercetin was statistically than those containing quercetin above 50 µg/mL. All the QT-LLs presented a low polydispersity index, even considering their significant differences and similar values for zeta potential. The films displayed a rough surface and the galactomannan structure was confirmed by FTIR. Additionally, the amorphous nature of the polysaccharide was observed by XRD. The films were luminous, with a predominant yellow tendency and low opacity. The incorporation of QT-LL in galactomannan films did not lead to statistical differences for solubility and MC, while significant differences were observed for WVP. Galactomannan films were shown to be a promising structure for the incorporation of lecithin liposomes loaded with quercetin, pointing at promising applications for different applications.

Despite the fact that skin has a stronger potential to regenerate than other tissues, wounds have become a serious healthcare issue. Much effort has been focused on developing efficient therapeutical approaches, especially biological ones. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the wound healing process, the classification of wounds, and the particular characteristics of each phase of the repair process. We also highlight characteristics of the normal process and those involved in impaired wound healing, specifically in the case of infected wounds. The treatments discussed here include proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. Proteins are important actors mediating interactions between cells and between them and the extracellular matrix, which are essential interactions for the healing process. Different strategies involving biopolymers, blends, nanotools, and immobilizing systems have been studied against infected wounds. Lipids of animal, mineral, and mainly vegetable origin have been used in the development of topical biocompatible formulations, since their healing, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties are interesting for wound healing. Vegetable oils, polymeric films, lipid nanoparticles, and lipid-based drug delivery systems have been reported as promising approaches in managing skin wounds. Carbohydrate-based formulations as blends, hydrogels, and nanocomposites, have also been reported as promising healing, antimicrobial, and modulatory agents for wound management.

The encapsulation of curcumin into lecithin/chitosan nanoparticles (NPC) using the electrostatic self-assembly technique was evaluated. NPC were characterized through average size, zeta potential, polydispersity index (PDI), morphology (TEM), encapsulation efficiency, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermal analyzes (TGA and DSC). The bioactive properties of NPC were determined by antioxidant (DPPH) and antimicrobial activities (against bacteria and fungi); the cytotoxic activity was performed through the MTT assay against normal and neoplastic cells. The stability of the NPC was evaluated for 28 days at 4 °C and 30 °C. NPC were spherical, with an average size of 236.27 ± 2.29 nm, PDI of 0.15 ± 0.01, Zeta potential of +51.31 ± 2.41 mV, and a high encapsulation rate (92.74 ± 0.01%). The nanoparticles showed high stability and excellent antimicrobial activity for Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. NPC were also able to preserve the antioxidant activity of curcumin and showed moderate cytotoxicity against colorectal and lung cancer strains. These characteristics expand the possibility of applying NPC in the field of nutraceuticals, for example immobilized in different food matrices for the development of new functional products.

Skin injuries constitute a gateway for pathogenic bacteria that can be either part of tissue microbiota or acquired from the environmental. These microorganisms (such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus) produce virulence factors that impair tissue integrity and sustain the inflammatory phase leading for establishment of chronic wounds. The high levels of antimicrobial resistance have limited the therapeutic arsenal for combatting skin infections. Thus, the treatment of non-healing chronic wounds is a huge challenge for health services worldwide, imposing great socio-economic damage to the affected individuals. This scenario has encouraged the use of natural polymers, such as polysaccharide, in order to develop new formulations (membranes, nanoparticles, hydrogels, scaffolds) to be applied in the treatment of skin infections. In this non-exhaustive review, we discuss the applications of polysaccharide-based formulations in the healing of infected wounds in animal models and clinical trials. The formulations discussed in this review were prepared using alginate, cellulose, chitosan, and hyaluronic acid. In addition to have healing actions per se, these polysaccharide formulations can act as transdermal drug delivery systems, controlling the release of active ingredients (such as antimicrobial and healing agents). The papers show that these polysaccharides-based formulations are efficient in controlling infection and improve the healing, even in chronic infected wounds. These data should positively impact the design of new dressings to treat skin infections.
