This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis in a young, mid-eastern European population of PLWH receiving ART for undetectable viremia.Patients and Methods: This was a single-centre study. We included 34 patients below 50 years old, treated in Szczecin, Poland, with confirmed HIV-1 infection, treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART), and undetectable viremia. All patients underwent coronary artery computed tomography (CACT), carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) evaluation, and echocardiography.Results: In the primary assessment, only two (5.8%) patients had an increased CVD risk calculated using the Framingham Risk Score (FRS), but we identified coronary or carotid plaques in 26.5% of the patients. Neither traditional risk factors nor those associated with HIV significantly influenced the presence of the plaque. IMT was significantly positively correlated with age and the FRS (R=0.38, p=0.04). Relative wall thickness assessed in echocardiography was higher in those with plaque (0.49 vs 0.44, p=0.04) and significantly correlated with IMT (R=0.38, p=0.04).Conclusion: In our population, more than a quarter of PLWH with undetectable viremia had subclinical atherosclerosis in either the coronary or carotid arteries. The FRS underpredicted atherosclerosis in this population. Abstract Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents aggressive phenotype with limited treatment options due to the lack of drug targets. Natural compounds are extensively studied regarding their potential to alter the efficacy of cancer treatment Among them sulforaphane – an isothiocyanate of natural origin, was shown to be a hormetic compound, that may exert divergent effects: cytoprotective or cytotoxic depending on its concentrations. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of its low, dietary concentrations on the proliferation and migration of the TNBC cells in the in vivo and in vitro 2D and 3D model. Results of the in vivo experiment showed up to 31% tumor growth inhibition after sulforaphane treatment associated with lowered proliferating potential of cancer cells, reduced areas of necrosis, and changed immune cell type infiltration, showing less malignant type of tumor in contrast to the non-treated group. Also, the study revealed that sulforaphane decreased the number of lung metastases. The in vitro study confirmed that SFN inhibited cell migration, but only in cells derived from 3D spheroids, not from 2D in vitro cultures. The results show a specific role of sulforaphane in the case of cells released from the TNBC primary tumor and its environment.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an enormous strain on the healthcare system, including infection prevention and control. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic required extraordinary resources, which were often diverted from routine infection prevention and control activities and may have contributed to increased rates of HAI in the acute care setting. However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on infection prevention and control departments, including staffing and resources, and on routine infection prevention and control activities is not well-described. The objective of this study was to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on IPC departments and department response to the pandemic. Methods: Between August and December of 2023, we conducted an electronic survey of all acute care facilities participating in the National Healthcare Safety Network. Survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Over 594 infection control departments participated in the survey, representing 1,400 NHSN facilities (20% response rate based on number of eligible NHSN facilities). Half of the respondents reported that their hospital experienced increases in the following HAI rates during the first two years of the pandemic: central-line associated bloodstream infections (54%), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (46%) and ventilator associated pneumonia (45%). When asked to identify the top three contributors to increased HAI rates in their facility, respondents cited the following factors: staffing shortages (70%), patient acuity (69%), use of travel nurses (48%), increased device utilization (37%), and reduced bedside acuity (31%). Respondents reported that their department utilized the following actions to decrease these HAI rates: increased rounding and monitoring of IPC procedures (81%), reeducation of frontline staff on IPC policies and procedures (77%), environmental care rounds (69%), monitoring of isolation compliance (66%), HAI Task Force/Committee (57%), nurse-driven catheter removal protocols (53%), and insertion prevention protocols (53%). When asked if the department experienced applied pressure or attempts to influence HAI reporting due to the increase in HAI rates in the facility experienced in the wake of the pandemic, 19% of respondents reported increased pressure from management/C-suite and 7% reported increased pressure from providers. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial impact on IPC departments in acute care hospitals and had a profound effect on IPC staffing, resources and routine IPC activities. Future work needs to identify best practices and lessons learned from the pandemic to inform future pandemic preparedness.

Z roku na rok rośnie liczba osób, u których diagnozuje się spektrum autyzmu. Problem ten nie dotyczy tylko naszego kraju, ale ma zasięg globalny. Dlatego należy przygotować systemy pracujące na rzecz obywateli, tj. system opieki społecznej, edukacji, aktywizacji zawodowej, jak również rynek pracy do przyjmowania coraz większej liczby osób z autyzmem. Niestety, dostępne obecnie statystyki mówią o braku koordynacji i efektywności działań pomocowych, o niewielkim ich zasięgu czy o braku zainteresowania rynku pracy tymi osobami.

Abstract Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a disease resulting from impaired patency of the pulmonary arteries by a clot, and the treatment method of choice is pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). In inoperable patients, balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) is recommended, but we need to implement pharmacological bridge therapy to BPA in some cases. We report a case of a 38‐year‐old male diagnosed with CTEPH, disqualified from PEA due to comorbidity, who developed right ventricular (RV) failure. The case shows a complex pharmacological treatment method that can be successfully used as an effective bridge therapy to BPA in patients with CTEPH and severe RV dysfunction, disqualified from surgery.

The leaves of Ilex paraguariensis (known as Yerba mate), used as a popular beverage, are a very well-recognized plant material with various biological activities, including analeptic (because of caffeine), anti-obesity (phenolics, saponins), antimicrobial, and antiviral (phenolics, saponins). Here, the chemical compositions of the leaves of two European Ilex species (× meserveae and aquifolium) with three varieties each were investigated. The terpenoid, saponin, and polyphenolic fractions were submitted for LC-MS or GC-MS analysis against a standard Mate leaf. In addition, the aroma profiles of all the species were analysed using HS-SPME-Arrow prior to GC-MS analysis. All fractions were subjected to antiviral and cytotoxic assays. We found 86 compounds in all accessions, with limonene, linalool, and p-cymene being predominant. There were minor similarities between the volatile compositions of the European and South American species. We found ursolic and oleanolic acid to be the main compounds in the terpenoid fraction. Mono-caffeoylquinic acids and di-caffeoylquinic acids were the main constituents of the polar fractions. About 180 compounds from the saponin group were tentatively identified, of which 9 and 3 were selected as distinctive markers for I. meserveae and I. aquifolium, respectively. Based on chemical screening, I. aquifolium Silver Queen was chosen as the source of terpenoid and saponin fractions and polyphenol extracts. The most substantial inhibition of cancer cell growth was observed with saponin in the case of the MCF7 (human breast cancer) cell line, while for LoVo and L929 cell lines (human colorectal cancer and reference mouse fibroblasts), it was slightly weaker. These results should be analysed further as a promising chemoprevention of colorectal and gastrointestinal cancers. Saponin and polyphenolic extracts exhibited similar activities against HSV-1 and HAdV-5, with 4-log reduction in virus titres. This study focuses our attention on a field of potential antiviral formulations derived from European holly.

Abstract Background Recent studies revealed that alterations in glucose and lipid metabolism in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) are associated with disease severity and poor survival. However, data regarding the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the prognosis of patients with IPAH remain scarce. The aim of our study was to determine that impact using data from a national multicentre prospective pulmonary hypertension registry. Methods We analysed data of adult patients with IPAH from the Database of Pulmonary Hypertension in the Polish population (BNP‑PL) between March 1, 2018 and August 31, 2020. Upon admission, clinical, echocardiographic, and haemodynamic data were collected at 21 Polish IPAH reference centres. The all-cause mortality was assessed during a 30-month follow-up period. To adjust for differences in age, body mass index (BMI), and comorbidities between patients with and without DM, a 2-group propensity score matching was performed using a 1:1 pairing algorithm. Results A total of 532 patients with IPAH were included in the study and 25.6% were diagnosed with DM. Further matched analysis was performed in 136 patients with DM and 136 without DM. DM was associated with older age, higher BMI, more advanced exertional dyspnea, increased levels of N-terminal pro–brain natriuretic peptide, larger right atrial area, increased mean right atrial pressure, mean pulmonary artery pressure, pulmonary vascular resistance, and all-cause mortality compared with no DM. Conclusions Patients with IPAH and DM present with more advanced pulmonary vascular disease and worse survival than counterparts without DM independently of age, BMI, and cardiovascular comorbidities.

Problematyka kształcenia zawodowego jest stale obecna w dyskursach i literaturze pedagogiki pracy. W różnych formach to środowisko naukowe prezentuje własne stanowiska, tezy, modele rozwiązań, ideologie, nawiązujące do rozmaitych problemów tego obszaru edukacyjnego. Mowa w nich m.in. o warunkach humanizacji procesów kształcenia zawodowego i zachowaniu równowagi pomiędzy kształceniem instrumentalnym i kierunkowym, holistycznym modelu kształcenia i przygotowaniu absolwentów szkół itd. Tymczasem w praktyce wyraźne są oznaki zmierzania ku racjonalności rynkowej i skrajnej efektywności ekonomicznej tych placówek oświatowych, którą mierzy się głównie oceną zewnętrzną.

The popularity of the use of accessories supporting baby caring such as rockers, car seats, baby carriers, and walkers is defined as container culture or container lifestyle. There is a tendency to use such items incorrectly, often leaving the infant without parental supervision. Reduction of a child’s spontaneous motor activity, prolonged stay in a forced supination position, premature sitting, or premature standing cause disturbances in motor, cognitive, social, and emotional development. The aim of the study is to present the problem of container baby syndrome. We would like to present recommendations that can be used during the parents’ education, to raise their awareness of proper conduct and stimulation of their child’s development.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of mineral (sulphate) or organic (glycine chelate) forms of Zn used in quantities covering 100% or 50% of the Zn requirement on the fatty acid profile of the thigh muscles of Ross 308 broiler chickens. We also analysed the dietary value of this meat based on its fatty acid profile. The experimental factors did not influence the content of basic chemical components and the meat’s pH. Although, in terms of statistics, the presented study supports the statement that the form (sulphate vs. glycine chelate) and/or amount of Zn used (100% or 50% of the requirement) affects the fatty acid profile and dietary value of thigh meat, the results imply that the requirement of Ross 308 broiler chickens for Zn was also covered in full when in it was used in amounts covering 50% of the requirement, irrespective of the form in which Zn was used. However, it cannot be explicitly confirmed that the form of Zn affects the analysed parameters of thigh meat.

This paper describes the effects of murine norovirus (MNV) infection on oxidative stress and histopathological changes in mice. This study uses histopathological assays, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant markers, and total oxidative status and capacity (TOS, TAC). The results suggest that MNV infection can lead to significant changes with respect to the above-mentioned parameters in various organs. Specifically, reduced superoxide dismutase (SOD), Mn superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were observed in liver tissues, while higher MnSOD activity was observed in kidney tissues of MNV-infected mice when compared to the control. GR activity was lower in all tissues of MNV-infected mice tested, with the exception of lung tissue. This study also showed that norovirus infection led to increased TOS levels in the brain and liver and TAC levels in the brain, while TOS levels were significantly reduced in the kidneys. These changes may be due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by the viral infection. ROS can damage cells and contribute to oxidative stress. These studies help us to understand the pathogenesis of MNV infection and its potential effects on oxidative stress and histopathological changes in mice, and pave the way for further studies of the long-term effects of MNV infection.

The changes that affect almost all areas of modern man's life mean that he is faced with challenges that no one has experienced before. Hence, great hopes are placed on education and its institutions, where young generations will be prepared for changes in the future. Unfortunately, as stated by a large group of educational experts, the Polish school remains in the old pattern of functioning and does not meet the needs of young generations. Therefore, the necessary and urgent task of Polish education is to search for new educational models in which the student will not only be able to use their creative potential and their strengths, but also overcome their own limitations and weaknesses. The educational scenarios presented in the text were inspired by the following reports: OECD Schooling Scenarios in Brief 2007; Poland 2030, 2009; Education of the Future, 2020, et al.

Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) localized in the H-zone, the region of fusion of embryonic masses, has been associated with a higher risk of deeper invasion and more frequent recurrence. Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare dermoscopic features of BCC in H and non-H zone that may most appropriately characterize those two locations. Methods: Dermoscopy images of histopathologically confirmed BCCs from 120 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Dermoscopy features of BCC in H- and non-H zone were described and a comparative study of the dermoscopic pattern of BCC between the two locations was performed. Results: Of 120 BCC cases included in this study, 41 (34.2%) were located in the H-zone. The most frequent histological type was nodular (51.3% in H- zone and 61.6 % in non-H-zone) followed by superficial (5.1% and 19.8 % in H and non-H-zone respectively). In dermoscopy, there was a higher prevalence of ulceration (73.2% versus 43.6%, P < 0.001) in H-zone and a lower prevalence of brown globules (26.8% versus 53.2%; P = 0.01), when compared with the non-H-zone. Conclusions: Our results show that dermoscopic features of BCC on the face fulfill a typical pattern regardless of the region, except for the prevalence of the ulceration which is significantly more frequent in H-zone and the brown globules present significantly more often in the non-H-zone It can be hypothesized that H-zone might predispose to more aggressive course of BCC complicated by ulceration and consequently deeper tissue destruction.

Human adenovirus 36 (HAdV-D36) is presently the sole virus identified to be associated with an elevated risk of obesity in both humans and animals. However, its impact on embryonated chicken eggs (ECEs) remains unexplored. This study endeavoured to examine the influence of HAdV-D36 on embryonic development by utilizing embryonated chicken eggs as a dynamic model. To simulate various infection routes, the allantoic cavity and the yolk sac of ECEs were inoculated with HAdV-D36. Subsequently, embryos from both the experimental (inoculated with virus) and control (inoculated with PBS) groups were weighed and subjected to daily histological examination. The daily embryo weights were assessed and compared between groups using the Shapiro–Wilk test. Histopathological changes in tissues were examined and compared between the tested and control groups to ascertain physiological alterations induced by the virus. Our study confirmed a significant increase in the body weight of ECEs. However, this phenomenon was not attributable to adipose tissue development; rather, it was characterized by an augmented number of cells in all observed tissues compared to control subjects. We posit that HAdV-D36 may impact developing organisms through mechanisms other than enhanced adipose tissue development. Specifically, our findings indicate an increased number of cells in all tissues, a phenomenon that occurs through an as-yet-unexplored pathway.

Female breast cancer is the most deadly cancer in women worldwide. The triple-negative breast cancer subtype therapies, due to the lack of specific drug targets, are still based on systemic chemotherapy with doxorubicin, which is burdened with severe adverse effects. To enhance therapeutic success and protect against systemic toxicity, drug carriers or combination therapy are being developed. Thus, an innovative liposomal formulation containing doxorubicin and the main nutraceutical, sulforaphane, has been developed. The anticancer efficacy and safety of the proposed liposomal formulation was evaluated in vivo, in a 4T1 mouse model of triple-negative breast cancer, and the mechanism of action was determined in vitro, using triple-negative breast cancer MDA-MB-231 and non-tumorigenic breast MCF-10A cell line. The elaborated drug carriers were shown to efficiently deliver both compounds into the cancer cell and direct doxorubicin to the cell nucleus. Incorporation of sulforaphane resulted in a twofold inhibition of tumor growth and the potential of up to a fourfold reduction in doxorubicin concentration due to the synergistic interaction between the two compounds. Sulforaphane was shown to increase the accumulation of doxorubicin in the nuclei of cancer cells, accompanied by inhibition of mitosis, without affecting the reactive oxygen species status of the cell. In normal cells, an antagonistic effect resulting in less cytotoxicity was observed. In vivo results showed that sulforaphane incorporation yielded not only cardioprotective, but also nephro- and hepatoprotective effects. The results of the research revealed the prospects of applying sulforaphane as a component of liposomal doxorubicin in triple-negative breast cancer chemotherapy.

Porokeratosis is a heterogeneous group of keratinising disorders characterised by the presence of particular microscopic structural changes, namely the presence of the cornoid lamella. This structure develops as a consequence of a defective isoprenoid pathway, critical for cholesterol synthesis. Commonly recognised variants include disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis, disseminated superficial porokeratosis, porokeratosis of Mibelli, palmoplantar porokeratosis (including porokeratosis palmaris et plantaris disseminata and punctate porokeratosis), linear porokeratosis, verrucous porokeratosis (also known as genitogluteal porokeratosis), follicular porokeratosis and porokeratoma. Apart from the clinical presentation and epidemiology of each variant listed, this review aims at providing up-to-date information on the precise genetic background, introduces imaging methods facilitating the diagnosis (conventional and ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermatoscopy, reflectance confocal microscopy and pathology), discusses their oncogenic potential and reviews the literature data on the efficacy of the treatment used, including the drugs directly targeting the isoprenoid–mevalonate pathway.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Nigella sativa L. (NS) oil addition on the quality of ground pork for pâté stored for one month and two months (−20 ± 1 °C). The study was conducted on a negative control (C), a positive control with the addition of antioxidant (CB) butylated hydroxyanisole (E320), and two groups with the addition of NS oil at the level of 1.9% (O1) and 3.8% (O2). The quality parameters tested in the meat were colour (measured in the CIELab system), lipid oxidation products, the fatty acid profile, thrombogenicity (T1), atherogenicity (A1), and the ratio of hypocholesterolemia to hypercholesterolemia (h/H). After roasting the pâtés, their volatile compound profiles were studied and sensory tests were conducted. A significant effect of NS oil additive on meat colour was found and ΔE for C-O2 increased faster during storage than for C-O1 and C-CB. NS oil additive in pork pâté improved the fatty acid profile. Significant differences in the rate of the fatty acid profile change during storage were observed with the addition of 3.8% NS oil compared to the other groups. Only the O2 group showed no change in PUFA content, while the h/H ratio was approximately 20% higher in the groups with added oil. The addition of NS oil also slowed the growth of TBARSs compared to the C and CB groups. The volatile compound profile of the raw pâté was most influenced by the proportion of terpenes in the NS oil. After two months of meat storage, the O1 pâté received the highest sensory ratings.

This narrative review presents a comprehensive overview of the diagnosis and management of pityriasis versicolor (PV), a common superficial fungal infection caused by the yeast Malassezia. PV is characterised by scaly hypopigmented or hyperpigmented patches, primarily affecting the upper trunk, neck, and upper arms. Regarding commensal interactions, Malassezia utilises nutrient sources without affecting the human host. In cases of pathogenicity, Malassezia can directly harm the host via virulence factors or toxins, or indirectly by triggering damaging host responses. The diagnosis typically relies on recognising characteristic clinical features. Due to the wide variability in its clinical presentation, recognising the differential diagnosis is critical. In this paper, we discuss the clinical differentials, with their dermatoscopic presentation, but also describe a range of helpful diagnostic techniques (microscopy, conventional and ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermatoscopy, and confocal microscopy). Topical therapies are the primary treatment for PV, encompassing non-specific antifungal agents like sulphur with salicylic acid, selenium sulphide 2.5%, and zinc pyrithione. Additionally, specific topical antifungal medications with either fungicidal or fungistatic properties may also be incorporated into the topical treatment regimen, such as imidazoles, allylamines, and ciclopirox olamine. Systemic therapies might occasionally be used. Patient education and the promotion of good personal hygiene are pivotal to reduce the risk of recurrence. In recurrent cases, particularly during warmer and more humid periods, prolonged prophylaxis with topical agents should be considered.

AIM: To assess the incidence of mitral valve prolapse in patients with newly diagnosed primary open angle glaucoma. METHODS: The study included 12 patients without any other comorbidities or taking any general or local medications. Each patient underwent a full ophthalmological examination with visual field assessment and optical computed tomography of the macula and optic nerve head. Carotid Doppler ultrasound was performed to exclude impaired blood flow in this region and transthoracic echocardiography with assessment of the function and morphology of the heart valves. RESULTS: In the study group, mitral valve prolapse was found in seven patients (58.3%), while mitral valve regurgitation in 11 patients (91.7%). One case of normal pressure glaucoma and four cases of juvenile glaucoma were diagnosed. There were also other risk factors for glaucoma: myopia (58.3%), migraine headaches (41.7%), a positive family history of glaucoma (16.7%). CONCLUSION: Mitral valve prolapse could be indicated as a new risk factor for glaucoma. It seems reasonable to conduct screening tests for glaucoma in patients with mitral valve prolapse in the course of echocardiography.

BackgroundDue to the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare organizations had to face challenging circumstances and modify the usual modality of service provision, introducing telehealth services in their routine patient care to lessen the risk of direct human-to-human exposure. Patients expressed concerns about personal visits to healthcare units and the possibility of accessing telemedicine turned out to be an effective tool for the continuity of care. Due to the limited experience with telemedicine before the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland, we sought to fill this gap by studying the experiences of Polish patients. Our study aimed to understand how patients define satisfaction and dissatisfaction with telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic in primary care.Material and methodsTwenty semi-structured interviews with primary care patients in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland were conducted to understand satisfaction with telemedicine. Interview transcripts were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The qualitative content analysis process involved familiarizing ourselves with the data, extracting text regarding satisfaction and dissatisfaction with the teleconsultation, condensing it into meaningful units assigning codes to them, and organizing codes into subcategories and categories. The entire analysis process was done through reflection and discussion until a consensus was reached between the researchers.ResultsFrom the participants' perspective, satisfaction with telemedicine was associated with receiving enough space to express their concerns. It was reported that they trusted their primary care physicians and felt comfortable during telemedicine consultations. Participants noted that connecting with a known, trusted doctor was more important than having a face-to-face visit with an unfamiliar physician. In our study, the participants equated satisfaction with treatment effectiveness. It was emphasized that in the event of unknown or unstable conditions, patients would prefer to be seen in person and receive a physical examination.ConclusionIn our research telemedicine met with a positive reception and was recognized by the majority of patients who made use of it as a valuable channel of contact with a primary care physician. In order to increase the level of patient satisfaction, the focus should be on improving aspects such as physician engagement and showing empathy during telemedicine, as well as providing complete, exhaustive information on the treatment process. Respecting patient needs and preferences during performing telemedicine visits is the goal of patient-centered care.

Abstract Research objective The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare delivery worldwide with likely negative effects on people who use opioids (PWUO). This scoping review of the original research literature describes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare delivery for PWUO and identifies gaps in the literature. Methods This scoping review of the original research literature maps the available knowledge regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare delivery for PWUO. We utilized the methodology developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute for scoping reviews, and content analyses methodology to characterize the current state of the literature. Results Of the 14 included studies, administrative database (n = 11), cross-sectional (n = 1) or qualitative (n = 2) studies demonstrated service gaps (n = 7), patient/provider experiences (n = 3), and patient outcomes for PWUO (n = 4). In March 2020, healthcare utilization dropped quickly, sharply increasing only for reasons of opioid overdose by May 2020. Service gaps existed in accessing treatment for new patients during the pandemic due to capacity and infrastructure limits. Physicians reported difficulty referring patients to begin an outpatient opioid treatment program due to increased restrictions in capacity and infrastructure. Patients also reported uncertainty about accessing outpatient treatment, but that telehealth initiation of buprenorphine increased access to treatment from home. Disproportionate increases in overdose rates among African Americans were reported in two studies, with differences by race and gender not examined in most studies. Fatal overdoses increased 60% in African Americans during the pandemic, while fatal overdoses in Non-Hispanic White individuals decreased. Conclusions In summary, this beginning evidence demonstrates that despite early reluctance to use the healthcare system, opioid overdose-related use of healthcare increased throughout the pandemic. Service delivery for medications to treat OUD remained at or above pre-pandemic levels, indicating the ability of telehealth to meet demand. Yet, racial disparities that existed pre-pandemic for PWUO are intensifying, and targeted intervention for high-risk groups is warranted to prevent further mortality. As the pandemic progresses, future research must focus on identifying and supporting subgroups of PWUO who are at heightened risk for experiencing negative outcomes and lack of access to care.

Objective The objective of this study was to compare growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality in young bulls, steers and heifers produced by crossing Limousin bulls with Holstein-Friesian cows, fattened semi-intensively and slaughtered at 18 months of age. Methods Thirty-one young calves were reared in a conventional production system, and were fed milk replacer, hay and concentrate. At 6 months of age, the animals were divided into groups based on gender, and were fed a total mixed ration composed of grass silage, concentrates I and II in a semi-intensive production system. At the end of the fattening period (18 months), the animals were slaughtered, carcass quality was evaluated, and samples of musculus longissimus thoracis were collected to determine the proximate composition and quality of meat. Results Bulls were characterized by the highest percentage share of the most valuable cuts in the carcass, and three-rib sections from bull carcasses had the highest lean meat content with low intramuscular fat content (0.93%). No significant differences in carcass conformation, dressing percentage or the percentage share of round in the right half-carcass were found between bulls vs. steers and heifers. Heifers and steers had higher carcass fat content than bulls, which had a positive influence on the sensory properties of beef. In comparison with the meat of bulls, the meat of steers and heifers was characterized by more desirable physical properties and sensory attributes (water-holding capacity, shear force, color lightness, aroma, juiciness, tenderness, flavor). Conclusion Under the semi-intensive production system, heifers and steers had higher carcass fat content than bulls, which had a positive effect on the sensory properties of beef. Bulls are better suited for intensive systems, which contribute to improving the quality of their meat. The results of this study may encourage producers to breed steers and heifers for beef.

Abstract Inositol requiring enzyme 1 alpha (IRE1α) is one of three signaling sensors in the unfolding protein response (UPR) that alleviates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in cells and functions to promote cell survival. During conditions of irrevocable stress, proapoptotic gene expression is induced to promote cell death. One of the three signaling stressors, IRE1α is an serine/threonine-protein kinase/endoribonuclease (RNase) that promotes nonconventional splicing of XBP1 mRNA that is translated to spliced XBP1 (XBP1s), an active prosurvival transcription factor. Interestingly, elevated IRE1α and XBP1s are both associated with poor cancer survival and drug resistance. In this study, we used next-generation sequencing analyses to demonstrate that triazoloacridone C-1305, a microtubule stabilizing agent that also has topoisomerase II inhibitory activity, dramatically decreases XBP1s mRNA levels and protein production during ER stress conditions, suggesting that C-1305 does this by decreasing IRE1α’s endonuclease activity.

Piloleiomyomas occur rarely and the literature regarding their dermoscopy is scarce. These tumours most commonly present as multiple nodules located on the trunk or the head. The diagnostic difficulties may be caused by their solitary appearance. Therefore, dermoscopy can serve as a non-invasive and accessible diagnostic modality to distinguish leiomyomas from other solitary tumours. This report presents the dermoscopy image of a piloleiomyoma developing on the trunk in a 35-year-old man. A yellowish homogenous background with the presence of delicate network and arborizing telangiectasias on the periphery were present, along with hypopigmented areas. The dermoscopy image of the lesion was characteristic for piloleiomyoma. Unusuall was the abundance of vessels, what is infrequent in this type of tumours.

IntroductionCivilization development coupled with contemporary lifestyle leads to a systematic increase in postural disorders. An analysis of factors that may provoke postural disorders indicates that such a stimulus may be the diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscles. Moreover, abnormal activity of the rectus abdominis muscles may affect balance disorders through reduced spinal stabilization and disturbed body statics. There is an increase in body posture abnormalities between the ages of 6 and 9 related to new school duties.Purpose of the StudyThe purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the shape of the spine and the width of the linea alba in children aged 6–9 years.Material and MethodThe study was designed to evaluate parameters determining the shape of the spine, and the width of the linea alba in healthy children aged 6–9 years. The study participants were divided into two groups based on the width of the linea alba. The study group with the width of the linea alba >10 mm and the control group with the width of the linea alba ≤ 10 mm. The study group were included 37 children and the control group 24 children. The examination of the linea alba width was performed by a radiology specialist using a linear transducer and SAOTE- My Lab Classc-type ultrasound at rest and during contraction of the rectus abdominis muscles. Parameters describing the shape of the spine were measured using the Diers Formetric 4D system: trunk inclination, trunk imbalance, pelvis tilt, pelvic torsion, kyphotic apex, lordotic apex, kyphotic angle, lordotic angle, rotation angle, trunk torsion, lateral deviation. The obtained results were statistically analyzed using a Paired t test for comparison of differences between the results in the study and control groups and Pearson's test to assess the correlation between the width of the linea alba and parameters describing spinal alignment.ResultsIn both groups, the parameters describing the shape of the spine did not differ from the norms accepted as typical for the age norm. The only statistically significant difference between the study and control group concerned the trunk inclination, which was negative in the study group, signifying a shift of the entire spine axis backwards beyond the vertical.ConclusionsThere is a correlation between the shape of spine and the width of the linea alba in terms of selected parameters determining the body posture in the sagittal plane, which concern: the position of the lumbar lordotic apex, trunk inclination and the depth of the lumbar lordotic angle. The width of the linea alba is not explicitly related to abnormalities of pelvic and spinal alignment in the frontal and transverse planes.

Abstract Melanoma in childhood is rare and its diagnosis is more difficult than in adults, as it often presents histologic features overlapping with the Spitz nevus. The authors report the case of a 17-year old boy who was first diagnosed with Spitz nevus, however, the final diagnosis made after the excision of the tumor arising in the scar was changed to melanoma. The case in this present study emphasizes the importance of the differential diagnosis of skin tumors in young patients.

The untypical course of reaction between chalcones and benzenesulfonylaminoguanidines led to the new 3-(2-alkylthio-4-chloro-5-methylbenzenesulfonyl)-2-(1-phenyl-3-arylprop-2-enylideneamino)guanidine derivatives 8–33. The new compounds were tested in vitro for their impact on the growth of breast cancer cells MCF-7, cervical cancer cells HeLa and colon cancer cells HCT-116 by MTT assay. The results revealed that the activity of derivatives is strongly related to the presence of hydroxy group in the benzene ring at the 3-arylpropylidene fragment. The most cytotoxic compounds 20 and 24 displayed mean IC50 values of 12.8 and 12.7 μM, respectively, against three tested cell lines and were almost 3- and 4-fold more active toward MCF-7 and HCT-116 when compared with non-malignant HaCaT cells. Furthermore, compound 24 induced apoptosis in cancer cells and caused a decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential as well as an increase of cells in sub-G1 phase in contrast to its inactive analog 31. The strongest activity against the most sensitive HCT-116 cell line was found for compound 30 (IC50 = 8 μM), which was 11-fold more effective in the growth inhibition of HCT-116 cells than those of HaCaT cells. Based on this fact, the new derivatives may be promising leading structures for the search for agents for the treatment of colon cancer.

Broad research interest is observed over last decade, toward searching for a new natural antioxidants, which could be applied in food industry. Especially attractive seems to be those rich in polyphenols, such as cherry. Thus, presented study determine the effect of cherry extract (equivalent of 20 mg and 40 mg GAE kg−1) on physicochemical properties of ground pork frozen for 80 days. Samples were analyzed for color, color change, color attractiveness, myoglobin oxidation, fat oxidation, fatty acids profile, cooking loss, texture profile. The positive effect of cherry extract was observed for fat oxidation but cooking loss was higher in samples with extract addition. Color, color change, color attractiveness, myoglobin oxidation or fatty acids profile did not differ between groups.

Antibiotic therapy must be carried out consistently and according to the guidelines. Viruses are the dominant cause of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) in children, as has been shown in many previous studies. Unnecessary antibiotic therapy should be avoided so that it does not affect patients' health and lead to the development of resistant bacterial strains. Here we report a national survey conducted in a group of 4,389 children to assess the impact of selected behavioral and environmental factors on antibiotic therapy in patients with URTIs. We found that selected environmental factors influenced the type of treatment. The place of residence, having siblings, an absence of vaccinations, the presence of allergies, and attendance at educational institutions were conducive to antibiotic therapy. These factors also influenced the frequency of hospitalization of children and their absence from nurseries, kindergartens, and schools, as well as the absence of their guardians from work.

Our previous research proved that benzenesulfonylguanidine derivatives display significant cytotoxic activity against human cancer cells. Here, we describe new 1-(2-alkylthio-4-chloro-5-methylbenzenesulfonyl)guanidines with cytotoxic activity against HCT-116 and MCF-7 cells. The planned derivatives were obtained by a two-step synthesis. The starting substrates were 1-(2-alkylthio-4-chloro-5-methyl)benzenesulfonyl)-3-aminoguanidines 1–4, which were transformed into 1-(2-alkylthio-4-chloro-5-methylbenzenesulfonyl)-3-[(2-chloroacetyl)amino]guanidines 5–8 by a reaction with chloroacetyl chloride. In the next step, the derivatives 5–8 were reacted with potassium thiocyanate, yielding 1-(2-alkylthio-4-chloro-5-methylbenzenesulfonyl)-3-(2-imino-4-oxothiazolidine-3-yl)guanidines 9–12. The synthesized derivatives 5–12 were evaluated in vitro by MTT assays for their activity against three human cancer cell lines: colon cancer HCT-116, breast cancer MCF-7, and cervical cancer HeLa. The activity against non-cancerous human epidermal keratinocyte line HaCaT was also examined. The data indicate that compounds 5–8 inhibit the growth of cancer cells more strongly than derivatives 9–12. The selective cytotoxic effect against HCT-116 cells was found for benzenesulfonylguanidine 6 containing a 2-(trifluoromethyl)benzylthio group at position two of the benzenesulfonyl scaffold. The IC50 value was 13 μM, while IC50 for HaCaT cells, it was 48 μM. Good selectivity was also observed for compound 7, with a 2-chloromethylbenzylthio substituent, against HCT-116 and MCF-7 cells (IC50 = 12 and 19 μM, respectively, for HCT-116 and MCF-7 cells, IC50 = 47 μM for HaCaT cells). Among compounds 9–12, only compound 9 showed moderate but selective cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells, with IC50 = 18 μM compared with IC50 = 54 μM for HaCaT cells.

The understanding of the mechanism of Topo I inhibition by organic ligands is a crucial source of information that has led to the design of more effective and safe pharmaceuticals in oncological chemotherapy. The vast number of inhibitors that have been studied in this respect over the last decades have enabled the creation of a concept of an ‘interfacial inhibitor’, thereby describing the machinery of Topo I inhibition. The central module of action of this machinery is the interface of a Topo I/DNA/inhibitor ternary complex. Most of the ‘interfacial inhibitors’ are primarily kinetic inhibitors that form molecular complexes with an “on–off” rate timing; therefore, all of the contacts between the inhibitor and both the enzyme and the DNA are essential to keep the complex stable and reduce the “off rate”. To test this hypothesis, we designed the compound using a C-9-(N-(2′-hydroxyethyl)amino)methyl substituent in an SN38 core, with a view that a flexible substituent may bind inside the nick of a model of the DNA and stabilize the complex, leading to a reduction in the “off rate” of a ligand in a potential ternary complex in vivo. Using docking analysis and molecular dynamics, free energy calculations on the level of the MM-PBSA and MM-GBSA model, here we presented the in silico-calculated structure of a ternary complex involving the studied compound 1. This confirmed our suggestion that compound 1 is situated in a groove of the nicked DNA model in a few conformations. The number of hydrogen bonds between the components of a ternary complex was established, which strengthens the complex and supports our view. The docking analysis and free energy calculations for the receptor structures which were obtained in the MD simulations of the ternary complex 1/DNA/Topo I show that the binding constant is stronger than it was for similar complexes with TPT, CPT, and SN38, which are commonly considered as strong Topo I inhibitors. The binary complex structure 1/DNA was calculated and compared with the experimental results of a complex that was in a solution. The analysis of the cross-peaks in NOESY spectra allowed us to assign the dipolar interactions between the given protons in the calculated structures. A DOSY experiment in the solution confirmed the strong binding of a ligand in a binary complex, having a Ka of 746 mM−1, which was compared with a Ka of 3.78 mM−1 for TPT. The MALDI-ToF MS showed the presence of the biohybrid, thus evidencing the occurrence of DNA alkylation by compound 1. Because of it having a strong molecular complex, alkylation is the most efficient way to reduce the “on–off” timing as it acts as a tool that causes the cog to brake in a working gear, and this is this activity we want to highlight in our contribution. Finally, the Topo I inhibition test showed a lower IC50 of the studied compound than it did for CPT and SN38.

Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is a condition manifested by unilateral thickening and/or shortening of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. It can lead to local or global consequences (i.e., forced position and limitation of mobility of the cervical spine and head, delay of motor development). Early recognition of CMT symptoms and the implementation of conservative treatment, considered effective in the majority of cases, are an important part of physical therapy in CMT. The aim of the study is to review literature presenting the methods of physical therapy in CMT and to create the authors’ own proposals for treatment, based on the results of this review. Based on subject-matter literature and our own experience, algorithms for the rehabilitation procedure have been proposed, presenting the general scheme of action in CMT and management depending on the clinical form and age of the child in whom therapy was started (up to 5 months and after 6 months). The authors’ proposed algorithm did not strictly specify the frequency of sessions with a physiotherapist, because this is the resultant of many factors. The main ones include the child's age on the day of initiation of therapy, the clinical form of torticollis, the presence of muscle tone disorders and/or skull asymmetry, but also, the correctness of performing exercises proposed as part of the home-based programme, regularity of therapy and compliance with postural programme principles.

Objectives This paper assesses the effect of neurophysiological rehabilitation in children with postural defects on the depth of thoracic kyphosis, lateral spinal deviation and rotation of spinal motor segments. Material and Methods A total of 201 patients aged 8–15 years old with a postural defect diagnosed by medical examination were enrolled. The analyzed parameters were determined using the DIERS system before the first therapeutic session and after 4 weeks of therapy. The angle of thoracic kyphosis, lateral deviation of the spine and spinal rotation were assessed. The therapy employed techniques associated with the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and Vojta’s approaches. The results were analyzed separately for both sexes and for patients rehabilitated solely with Vojta’s techniques vs. patients rehabilitated according to combined Vojta’s and PNF techniques. The χ2 test was used for statistical analyses, at p < 0.05. Results There was improvement in the angle of thoracic kyphosis, ranging from 0.14 (among boys with kyphosis < 42°) to 5.47 (among girls with kyphosis ≥ 42°), spinal rotation, from 0.37 (among boys with kyphosis ≥ 42°) to 4.33 (among patients with kyphosis ≥ 42° rehabilitated solely according to Vojta’s method), and lateral deviations, ranging from 1.32 mm (among boys with kyphosis < 42°) to 2.99 mm (among patients with kyphosis ≥ 42° rehabilitated solely according to Vojta’s method). Conclusions Neurophysiological rehabilitation of patients with postural defects produced positive effects by improving the angle of thoracic kyphosis, spinal rotation and lateral deviation of the spine. Children with reduced thoracic kyphosis achieved less improvement in the kyphosis angle, lateral spinal deviation and spinal rotation than children with kyphosis ≥ 42°. The EUROP classification system includes only a small number of indicators to characterise beef carcases, none of which directly describes meat quality. Therefore, beef producers show limited interest in improving meat quality parameters. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether conformation and fat cover, as assessed in the EUROP classification system, can be reliable descriptors of the qualitative characteristics of beef carcases and meat quality. A total of 198 carcases of young bulls were analysed. Meat samples were collected from the longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle. It was found that the muscle content of three-rib cuts was higher in better-conformed carcases. Conformation class was inversely related to intramuscular fat (IMF) content, the fat content of three-rib cuts and meat juiciness. Meat quality was better characterised by fat class than conformation class. The fat cover had a positive influence on shear force values, the water-holding capacity and tenderness of meat. The water-holding capacity of meat and shear force values can be used in addition to EUROP scores to more accurately characterise beef carcases.Highlights Better conformed carcases have lower intramuscular fat content, lower fat content of three-rib cuts, higher shear force values and lower juiciness scores; Fat cover is a more reliable indicator of meat quality than carcase conformation; Water-holding capacity and shear force can be used in addition to EUROP scores.

Background: Abdominal obesity, together with atherogenic dyslipidemia, increased blood pressure and impaired glucose tolerance, was included in the components of metabolic syndrome identifying patients at high risk of cardiovascular diseases. Subcutaneous adipose tissue is a buffer for dietary fatty acids (FAs). It was reported that the fatty acid composition of adipose tissue reflects the dietary intake of FAs in the previous 6 to 9 months. Therefore, we decided to evaluate the early and long-term metabolic effects of lipocavitation and/or thermolipolysis on abdominal fat reduction. Material and Methods: The study population comprised 60 women. Subjects were randomly allocated into one of three subgroups, 20 women per subgroup, and each subgroup received 10 treatments with ultrasound (U group), radiofrequency (RF group), or combined radiofrequency and ultrasound (RF/U group) for the abdominal region. Treatments were provided three times a week using the multifunctional device (Professional Beauty Equipment, HEBE, Warsaw, Poland). Each treatment to reduce adipose tissue, regardless of the method used, involved 20 min of massage with the dedicated applicator head on a rectangular 20 cm × 10 cm area of the abdominal region. Fatty acid composition and biochemical and anthropometric parameters were measured before the first, after 10 treatments and 6 months after the last treatment. Results and discussion: The series of 10 treatments to reduce abdominal adipose tissue using ultrasound, radiofrequency or both methods resulted in a cosmetic effect which was reflected in weight loss and BMI reduction. Reduced waist circumference was also found in patients who received radiofrequency or two types of intervention (RF + U) but not ultrasound treatments. The long-term cosmetic effect (lasting for at least 6 months) was achieved only with RF treatment and was reflected in reduced body weight, BMI and waist circumference. None of the treatments had a direct, short or long-term effect on the lipid profile, insulin resistance markers, inflammation markers, or blood pressure. Consequently, did not modify the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Meat is a rich source of various nutrients. However, it needs processing before consumption, what in turn generates formation of carcinogenic compounds, i.a., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), nitrosamines (NOCs), and the most mutagenic heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). It was widely found that many factors affect the content of carcinogens in processed meat. However, it has recently been discovered that after digestion free HAAs are released, which are not detectable before enzymatic treatment. It was established that the highest percentage of carcinogens is released in the small intestine and that its amount can be increased up to 6.6-fold. The change in free HAAs content in analyzed samples was dependent on many factors such as meat type, doneness, particle size of meat, and the enzyme concentration used for digestion. In turn, introduction of bacteria naturally occurring in the human digestive tract into the model significantly decreases total amount of HAAs. Contrary, the addition of food ingredients rich in polyphenols, fiber, and water (pepper powder, onions, apples) increases free HAAs’ release up to 56.06%. Results suggests that in vitro digestion should be an integral step of sample preparation. Artificial digestion introduced before chromatographic analysis will allow to estimate accurately the content of carcinogens in processed meat.

The lack of resistance of plastic objects to various pathogens and their increasing activity in our daily life have made researchers develop polymeric materials with biocidal properties. Hence, this paper describes the thermoplastic composites of Polyamide 12 mixed with 1–5 wt % of the nanoparticles of zinc, copper, and titanium oxides prepared by a twin-screw extrusion process and injection moulding. A satisfactory biocidal activity of polyamide 12 nanocomposites was obtained thanks to homogenously dispersed metal oxides in the polymer matrix and the wettability of the metal oxides by PA12. At 4 wt % of the metal oxides, the contact angles were the lowest and it resulted in obtaining the highest reduction rate of the Escherichia coli (87%), Candida albicans (53%), and Herpes simplex 1 (90%). The interactions of the nanocomposites with the fibroblasts show early apoptosis (11.85–27.79%), late apoptosis (0.81–5.04%), and necrosis (0.18–0.31%), which confirms the lack of toxicity of used metal oxides. Moreover, the used oxides affect slightly the thermal and rheological properties of PA12, which was determined by oscillatory rheology, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry.

The growing number of people at high risk of cardiovascular disease development contributed to both changes in diets by consumers and the reformulation of food products by food producers. Cardiovascular diseases are caused by the i.a. consumption of meat that contains animal fat rich in saturated fatty acids (SFA). The use of fat substitutes in meat seems to be a promising tool for the reduction of cardiovascular disease occurrence. In the presented study, beef fat was replaced at 0 (CO), 25 (S-25%), 50 (S-50%), 75 (S-75%), and 100% (S-100%) by a fat substitute in a form of a lyophilized hydrogel emulsion enriched with encapsulated açai oil. The chemical (TBARS, volatile compound profile, fatty acid profile, pH), and physical (TPA, consumer rating, L*a*b* color, cooking loss) analyses were performed on raw and grilled burgers subjected to storage at cold conditions (4 °C) in days 0 and 7. Burgers formulated with hydrogels had a higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of about 32% (p < 0.05) and reduced SFAs by 22%. Reformulation of the burger resulted in lower nutritional indices of the atherogenicity index (AI) (0.8 for CO, 0.3 for S-100%, p < 0.05) and thrombogenicity index (TI) (1.8 for CO, 0.6 for S-100%, p < 0.05), as well as led to an increased h/H ratio (1.3 for CO, 3.9 for S-100%, p < 0.05). Furthermore the application of freeze-dried hydrogels reduced cooking loss. Moreover, consumers did not observe significant differences (p < 0.05) between the control and S-25% and S-50% burgers. Thus, the use of lyophilized hydrogels formulated with konjac flour and sodium alginate and enriched with encapsulated acai oil can be successfully applied as a fat substitute in beef burgers.

Background: Significant achievements in the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) have provided effective therapeutic options for most patients. However, the true impact of the changed landscape of CTEPH therapies on patients’ management and outcomes is poorly known. We aimed to characterize the incidence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of CTEPH patients in the modern era of CTEPH therapies. Methods: We analyzed the data of CTEPH adults enrolled in the prospective multicenter registry. Results: We enrolled 516 patients aged 63.8 ± 15.4 years. The incidence rate of CTEPH was 3.96 per million adults per year. The group was burdened with several comorbidities. New oral anticoagulants ( n = 301; 58.3%) were preferred over vitamin K antagonists ( n = 159; 30.8%). Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) was performed in 120 (23.3%) patients and balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) in 258 (50%) patients. PEA was pretreated with targeted pharmacotherapy in 19 (15.8%) patients, and BPA in 124 (48.1%) patients. Persistent CTEPH was present in 46% of PEA patients and in 65% of patients after completion of BPA. Persistent CTEPH after PEA was treated with targeted pharmacotherapy in 72% and with BPA in 27.7% of patients. At a mean time period of 14.3 ± 5.8 months, 26 patients had died. The use of PEA or BPA was associated with better survival than the use of solely medical treatment. Conclusions: The modern population of CTEPH patients comprises mostly elderly people significantly burdened with comorbid conditions. This calls for treatment decisions that are tailored individually for every patient. The combination of two or three methods is currently a frequent approach in the treatment of CTEPH. This study evaluates the effects of using a fat substitute in beef burgers composed of a hydrogel emulsion enriched with encapsulated safflower oil and açai extract. The influences of the fat substitute on the chemical (TBARS, fatty acids, and volatile compounds profile) and physical (weight loss, cooking loss, water-holding capacity, color, and texture analyses) characteristics of the burgers were analyzed after 0, 4 and 8 days of storage at 4 ± 1 °C. The obtained results were compared with control groups (20 g of tallow or 8 g of safflower oil). The fat substitute used improved burger parameters such as chewiness, hardness and the a* color parameter remained unchanged over storage time. The addition of açai extract slowed the oxidation rate of polyunsaturated fatty acids and reduced the changes in the volatile compounds profile during the storage of burgers. The utilization of a fat substitute enriched the burgers with polyunsaturated fatty acids and lowered the atherogenic index (0.49 raw, 0.58 grilled burger) and the thrombogenicity index (0.8 raw, 1.09 grilled burger), while it increased the hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic ratio (2.59 raw, 2.09 grilled burger) of consumed meat. Thus, the application of the presented fat substitute in the form of a hydrogel enriched with açai berry extract extended the shelf life of the final product and contributed to the creation of a healthier meat product that met the nutritional recommendations.

The study was aimed at determining the effects of the rearing system and intensity of fattening on beef physicochemical properties and sensory quality, fatty acid composition, and mineral compounds and vitamins concentration. The study was conducted using meat from 38 young, crossbred bull calves, which were reared with nurse cows (C) or were fed milk replacer (R). In the study, intensive (Int) or semi-intensive (SInt) fattening system were applied. The bulls were slaughtered at the age of 560 days and samples of the longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle were collected. Meat from C bulls was juicier (p < 0.05) and had a higher concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as well as zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and α-tocopherol, compared with meat from R bulls. The Int system resulted in the intramuscular fat (IMF) content increase (p < 0.01) and reduced shear force (p < 0.05), compared with the SInt system. Meat from Int bulls had a better eating quality and a higher monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFAs), Zn, and Fe; however, it had a lower proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and α-tocopherol concentration than meat obtained from SInt bulls.

Many people are increasingly interested in a vegetarian or vegan diet. Looking at the research and the available options in the market, there are two generations of products based on typical proteins, such as soy or gluten, and newer generation proteins, such as peas or faba beans, or even proteins based on previously used feed proteins. In the review, we present the characteristics of several proteins that can be consumed as alternatives to first-generation proteins used in vegan foods. In the following part of the work, we describe the research in which novel protein sources were used in terms of the product they are used for. The paper describes protein sources such as cereal proteins, oilseeds proteins coming from the cakes after oil pressing, and novel sources such as algae, insects, and fungus for use in meat analog products. Technological processes that can make non-animal proteins similar to meat are also discussed, as well as the challenges faced by technologists working in the field of vegan products.

Langerhans cells (LCs) are bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DCs) that represent 2-3% of the entire cell population of the human skin, known to have an ability to present antigens to T lymphocytes. Moreover, there is evidence that LCs are probably capable of inducing the local cytotoxic type T-cell-mediated response against the tumour-associated antigens. In the past two decades, a dramatic increase has been noted in the incidence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The purpose of this study was to critically assess the results of available studies quantitatively assessing the LCs in nonmelanoma skin cancers and try to establish a conclusion of its possible impact on their future treatment. The PubMed, EMBASE, and the Web of Science databases were searched, which returned 948 citations. After a thorough analysis of full article texts, 30 studies have been chosen, including 11 of the BCC, 12 of the SCC specimens, and 7 analysing both tumour types. There was an overall trend towards slightly higher numbers of LCs in BCC than in SCC; however, these tendencies were discrepant between the studies. We presume that such differences could be caused by various staining techniques with a broad spectrum of specificity, including anti-S100, anti-CD1a, and ATPase activity staining used for LCs identification. We hypothesise that as there is a high inconsistency between the results of the studies, as far as the densities of LCs observed in the specimens are concerned, it seems that the mechanism of the influence of LCs on the antitumoural immune response is complicated. Finally, as at present, there is a paucity of available risk scores for the recurrence or progression of BCC or SCC, the creation of classification stratifying that risk including the density of LCs could bring additional information both for the physician and the patient.
