AbstractProduct upgrading is the most viable solution for small holder farmers to increase their income and capture more of the value of their product in the value chain. This paper was aimed at assessing factors affecting smallholder tomato producers’ participation decisions in product upgrading (adopting improved variety, pesticide application, and staking). Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from primary and secondary sources of data. Semi-structured interview, focus group discussion, key informant interview, and personal observation were used to collect data. To analyse data obtained from sample respondents, descriptive and econometric models (multivariate probit model) were used. The result of the study implied that family size, farming experience, year of school, access to market information, training, seed, and pesticide significantly and positively influenced one or more product upgrading techniques while age and market distance had negative and significant association with product upgrading. Therefore, policy and development interventions should give emphasis towards the improvement of such institutional support system so as to foster household participation in product upgrading.

The study evaluated the land productivity of root crop farmers amidst pesticide application in southeast, Nigeria. 358 root crop producers were chosen using a multi-stage sample and given a questionnaire. The analysis of the data included the use of mean, frequency, percentage, total factor and partial factor productivity, analysis of variance, multiple regression model, and local average treatment effect (LATE). Data were acquired using primary means. The results show that root crop growers were mostly women (76.9%), married (85.1%), educated (mean=12.0), and in their prime working age (51). Estimates of total factor productivity (TFP) and partial factor productivity (PFP) gave 7.69 and 177.25, which indicates higher land productivity values across Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi State. Education, access to farm inputs, soil/land improvement practices, size of farm, and extension relations were important components of land productivity across the States. Use and application of pesticides according to specified recommendation increased land productivity by (727.07%) and (880.28%). Erosion problems (99.7%), pests and disease (96.9%), high cost of inputs (99.1%), climate change (99.4) and land fragmentation (93.0%) constrained land productivity in the States. Study recommends farmers to practice more of land improvement practices and adhere to specified pesticide use and application to increase land productivity

Various health risk assessment models have been developed to evaluate occupational pesticide exposure in China. However, there has been limited investigation into the relationship between health risks and pesticide spraying in orchards. In this study, we analyzed pesticide exposure of applicators while spraying with a stretcher-mounted sprayer in orchards located in four different climatic regions. All garments’ unit exposure (UE) demonstrated a right-skewed distribution, with gloves and shins accounting for the highest proportion of dermal pesticide exposure. We observed little difference in dermal and inhalation UE levels between apple and citrus orchards, except for pesticide exposure levels on wipes and faces. While 57% of the inhalation UE distribution variance was attributed to clustering and location effects, no significant differences were observed in dermal exposure levels. We evaluated the impact of different levels of protective clothing on pesticide exposure levels, according to applicators' working habits in China. Our findings revealed that improved levels of protection significantly reduced dermal exposure to pesticides, particularly when wearing gloves during spraying with a stretcher-mounted sprayer. Based on our empirical data, we utilized a simple random sampling model and an intercept-only lognormal mixed model to estimate dermal and inhalation exposure levels. The estimated dermal UE was accurate to within 3-fold with 95% confidence, and half of the estimated inhalation UE was acceptable according to the fold relative accuracy (fRA). Our established and verified statistics for dermal and inhalation UE can be utilized to evaluate the potential pesticide exposure to applicators during spraying in orchards with a stretcher-mounted sprayer.

A pesticide exposure baseline for honey bees was compiled for two New England cropping systems, the native North American plant species consisting of lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton) and cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton). More unique pesticide compounds were applied in blueberry than cranberry, but the numbers of pesticides discovered in trapped honey bee pollen were similar between the two crop systems. Not all pesticides found in pollen were the result of the applications reported by growers of either crop. When comparing residues, number of pesticides detected, total concentration, and risk quotient varied between the two crops. Also, blueberry was dominated by fungicides and miticides (varroacides) and cranberry was dominated by insecticides and herbicides. When comparing reported grower applications that were matched with detection in residues, the proportion of pesticide numbers, concentrations, and risk quotients varied by crop system and pesticide class. In most cases, pesticide residue concentrations were of low risk (low risk quotient) to honey bees in these crops. Estimation of decay rates of some of the most common pesticide residues under field conditions could aid growers in selection of less persistent compounds, together with safe application dates, prior to bringing in honey bees for pollination.

Introduction: In this study, we aimed to characterise exposure to pyrethroids, organophosphates, and tebuconazole through multiple pathways in 110 parent–child pairs participating in the CELSPAC–SPECIMEn study. Methods: First, we estimated the daily intake (EDI) of pesticides based on measured urinary metabolites. Second, we compared EDI with estimated pesticide intake from food. We used multiple linear regression to identify the main predictors of urinary pesticide concentrations. We also assessed the relationship between urinary pesticide concentrations and organic and non-organic food consumption while controlling for a range of factors. Finally, we employed a model to estimate inhalation and dermal exposure due to spray drift and volatilization after assuming pesticide application in crop fields. Results: EDI was often higher in children in comparison to adults, especially in the winter season. A comparison of food intake estimates and EDI suggested diet as a critical pathway of tebuconazole exposure, less so in the case of organophosphates. Regression models showed that consumption per g of peaches/apricots was associated with an increase of 0.37% CI [0.23% to 0.51%] in urinary tebuconazole metabolite concentrations. Consumption of white bread was associated with an increase of 0.21% CI [0.08% to 0.35%], and consumption of organic strawberries was inversely associated (-61.52% CI [-79.34% to -28.32%]), with urinary pyrethroid metabolite concentrations. Inhalation and dermal exposure seemed to represent a relatively small contribution to pesticide exposure as compared to dietary intake. Conclusion: In our study population, findings indicate diet plays a significant role in exposure to the analysed pesticides. We found an influence of potential exposure due to spray drift and volatilization among the subpopulation residing near presumably sprayed crop fields to be minimal in comparison. However, the lack of data indicating actual spraying occurred during the critical 24-hour period prior to urine sample collection could be a significant contributing factor.

Traditional spraying of pesticides causes significant drift losses, and the residues of pesticides can also affect non-targeted organisms in the environment. Tree injection technology is a precise and targeted pesticide delivery method used in the prevention and treatment of tree and fruit tree pest infestations. It uses the tree’s xylem to transport the injected pesticides throughout the entire plant, reducing pesticide exposure in an open environment. This review summarizes the basic principles and development process of tree injection technology, compares its advantages with other application techniques, describes the development of injection equipment and key information to be aware of, and proposes suggestions for future research directions in injection application techniques.

The knowledge of eggplant farmers on the proper use of pesticides was evaluated in Khartoum State. Questionnaire was distributed to farmers in North Nile Farms (NN), East Nile Farms (ENF), and West Nile Farms (WNF) to solicit information. Interviews and questionnaires revealed that there is a limited level of awareness among farmers. The majority (94%) of farmers did not abide by recommended disposal procedures, they only damage and bury the containers inside the farms. The majority of farmers (66%) were not aware of the safety period for any given product. The excessive use of pesticides in eggplant production and reliance only on pesticides as a pest management strategy calls for the implementation of IPM programs integrating the use of environmentally soft chemicals with other non-chemical control methods to manage pests and diseases. Safety periods should be carefully watched to reduce the level of residues in eggplant fruits below the acceptable level and to ensure sustainable and safe production.

Nonstandard pesticide-application behavior leads to excessive pesticide residue and even affects the quality and safety of agricultural products and agricultural sustainability. Based on 968 valid samples randomly selected in Jiangsu Province of China, it focuses on the impact of incident shock and yield fluctuation avoidance on the pesticide-application behavior of farmers. Then, it investigated the impact of intentional factors, such as insufficient cognition and lack of knowledge, on their improper pesticide-application behavior. This study shows that, besides the pursuit of improper income, inadequate awareness and preventive actions to avoid operational risks are also important factors in farmers’ nonstandard pesticide application. In addition, the study also shows that farmers who understand the responsibility unit of agricultural product quality and safety supervision are more inclined to choose standardized application of pesticides. The higher the education level of farmers, the higher the probability of standardized application of pesticides. Therefore, farmers’ nonstandard pesticide-application behavior is largely due to the farmers’ insufficient awareness of the harm of pesticide residues or the lack of trust in the efficacy of pesticides. Moreover, the study also shows that adverse selection phenomenon exists in pesticide-application training.

Understanding the distribution of intercepted spray deposits is important for the study of the dose-response relationship of spraying a targeted pathogen and for the optimisation of the spraying process. However, carrying out exhaustive measurements of canopy spray deposits is difficult, particularly in production situations. This new experimental method for use in commercial vineyards was based on the installation of artificial targets (PVC collectors) within the canopy. To evaluate the quality of this experimental method for estimating the statistical distribution of deposition it was compared to an intensive manual method of foliar deposition measurements on real leaves. Intercepted deposition data on the real leaves and artificial targets were collected in a regular grid pattern within 12 non-contiguous vegetation sections. The results showed that although the means were similar, the variance in deposition appeared to differ between the distributions on artificial targets and real foliage, with CV values of between 37.4-52.7 % and 69.4-80.5 % respectively. Therefore, any central statistics must be supplemented with a statistical distribution analysis to account for the dispersion of deposition values within the vegetation. The results from comparisons between the cumulative distributions of intercepted deposition on the real leaves and on the PVC collector sections showed that the deposition estimates averaged over three-vine sections gave relevant, repeatable estimates for both approaches. The results also showed that for low deposition values, the experimental method led to a correct estimation of deposition on real leaves. However, above 230 ng dm² per 1 g/ha, the experimental method underestimated the deposition on real leaves by 13.6 %. Using these methodological results, it may be possible to develop models capable of predicting the distribution of deposition within the plant canopy. It would thereby be possible to develop an approach for variable-rate sprayer control that takes into account the phytosanitary risk and the site-specific variable structure of the vegetation during the season.

This study quantifies the damages of fall armyworm infestation in maize production and identifies the various methods used in controlling fall armyworm infestation. Almost all farmers 94% experienced fall armyworm infestation on their farms. They cited key common visual damages as yellowish leaves, stunted growth, poor yield quality, holes in leaves, and egg masses on leaves. Farmer’s loss an average of GH¢2616.07 to fall armyworm infestation. Pesticide application is the frequent control measure mostly used by farmers. Farmers do not mostly use biological methods for the control of the fall armyworm. The use of pesticide as a control method is however not effective as about GH¢ 3 000 per 1 acre is lost with the use of insecticides. It is recommended that the use of other control measures like the contemporary measures involving the use of birds and chickens as predators of eggs and worms of fall armyworm should be encouraged. Spraying pesticides using row alignment in the maize seedling stage can effectively improve pesticide utilization and protect the ecological environment. Therefore, this study extracts a guidance line for maize crops using machine vision and develops an automatic row-oriented control system based on a high-clearance sprayer. First, the feature points of crop rows are extracted using a vertical projection method. Second, the candidate crop rows are obtained using a Hough transform, and two auxiliary line extraction methods for crop rows based on the slope feature outlier algorithm are proposed. Then, the guidance line of the crop rows is fitted using a tangent formula. To greatly improve the robustness of the vision algorithm, a Kalman filter is used to estimate and optimize the guidance line to obtain the guidance parameters. Finally, a visual row-oriented spraying platform based on autonomous navigation is built, and the row alignment accuracy and spraying performance are tested. The experimental results showed that, when autonomous navigation is turned on, the average algorithm time consumption of guidance line detection is 42 ms, the optimal recognition accuracy is 93.3%, the average deviation error of simulated crop rows is 3.2 cm and that of field crop rows is 4.36 cm. The test results meet the requirements of an automatic row-oriented control system, and it was found that the accuracy of row alignment decreased with increasing vehicle speed. The innovative spray performance test found that compared with the traditional spray, the inter-row pesticide savings were 20.4% and 11.4% overall, and the application performance was significantly improved.

Off-target drift of crop protection materials from aerial spraying can be detrimental to sensitive crops, beneficial insects, and the environment. So, it is very important to accurately characterize weather effects for accurate recommendations on drift mitigation. Wind is the single-most important weather factor influencing localized off-target drift of crop protection materials. In drift sampling experiments, it is difficult to accurately characterize wind speed and direction at a drift sampling location, owing to the natural variability of spray movement on the way to the sampling target. Although it is difficult or impossible to exactly track wind movement to a target, much information can be gained by altering the way wind speed and tracking is characterized from field experiments and analyzed using statistical models of spray drift. In this study two methods of characterizing weather were compared to see how they affect results from a statistical model of downwind spray drift using field data. Use of a method that implemented weather averages over the length of a spray run resulted in model-based estimates for spray tracer concentration that compared well with field data averages. Model results using this method showed only a slight sensitivity to changes in wind speed, and this difference was more pronounced further downwind. The degree of this effect was consistent with field results. Another method that used single weather values obtained at the beginning of each run resulted in an unexpected inverse relationship of residue concentration with respect to increases in wind speed by sensitivity analysis and would thus not be recommended for use in a statistical model of downwind spray drift. This study could provide a guideline for general agricultural aviation analysis and unmanned aerial vehicle spray application studies.

The use of pergola trellis crops has led to a need for irrigation and the spraying of pesticides. Thus, a new integrated micro-nozzle was designed to provide water and pesticides. The structural parameters that affect the irrigation performance were selected based on the working principle of the sprinkler. They included the outlet diameter, refractive surface angle, and the distance from the outlet plane to the refractive surface (cone hole distance). The structural parameters that affect the performance of spraying pesticide included the number of diversion chutes, nozzle diameter, and nozzle outer cone angle. The structural optimization of the water–pesticide integrated sprinkler was determined by a single-factor and a three-factors four-levels orthogonal tests. The indices used to evaluate the performance of the sprinkler were irrigation flow rate, wetted radius, and uniformity coefficient. Those used to evaluate the performance at spraying pesticides included the flow rate of spraying pesticides, spray cone angle, and relative size range of the droplets. The entropy weight and the extreme difference analytical methods were used to process the test data. The main order of the influence of key structural parameters on the irrigation performance was obtained as follows: outlet diameter, refractive surface angle, and cone hole distance. The primary and secondary order of the influence on the performance of spraying pesticide was as follows: the number of diversion chutes, angle of the outer cone of the nozzle, and nozzle diameter. The optimal combination of parameters for this water–pesticide integrated micro sprinkler was obtained as follows: outlet diameter 2.0 mm, refractive surface angle 30°, cone hole distance 1.0 d, nozzle diameter 3.0 mm, two diversion chutes, and nozzle outer cone angle 90°. The performance indices included the irrigation water flow rate 0.284 m3/h, wetted radius 4.26 m, uniformity coefficient 91.07%, flow rate of pesticides spread 0.097 m3/h, spray cone angle 121.25°, and average relative distribution span of droplets 1.18. The results provide an important theoretical basis for the practical application of sprinklers.

One of the goals of adding adjuvants to agricultural spray solutions is to enhance the droplet size characteristics of this spray. Droplet size, in turn, has an influence in the deposited spray quality, in addition to the drift and losses of spray to off-target places. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of adding adjuvants to two types of water from different sources on the droplet size characteristics. Two types of adjuvants were employed in the tests: the active substance content of the first adjuvant was a 50% aqueous solution of sodium salt of alkylbenzenesulfonic acid—10% (HY), whereas the second was from rapeseed oil (natural origin)—85% (OL). Both adjuvants were tested in two concentrations: the first was with the concentration recommended by the manufacturer (100%), whereas the second concentration was 50% of the recommended dose. Two types of water from different sources were used in the tests: the first was from a village in the eastern part of Poland (WS), whereas the second was tap water from the city of Lublin, Poland (WUP). Dv0.1, Dv0.5, or volume median diameter (VMD), Dv0.9, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), relative span (RS), and the droplet size distribution were measured and calculated as characteristics of the droplet size. Results showed that the source of water affected the influence of adding adjuvant to the spray solution. Water from the WS source with adjuvant resulted in a numerical decrease in the Dv0.5 values in the percentage of droplet size range below 150 µm, whereas water from the WUP source resulted in an increase in these values (except when adding the HY adjuvant at 50% concentration). Adjuvant concentration significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the features of Dv0.9, SMD, and RS. Adding the OL adjuvant type numerically decreased the percentage of droplet size below 150 µm, and the Dv0.5 values, but only when the WS water source was used.

The effective quantification of deposition rate is of vital importance in optimizing the application performance and the utilization of pesticides; meanwhile, the canopies of fruit tree orchards are large, with dense branches and leaves shading each other, making it difficult to quantify spraying efficiency. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a facile methodology for assessing the performance of different spraying techniques in terms of distribution and utilization rate in orchards. To evaluate spraying efficacy in orchards, a canopy segmentation method was developed in to be able to determine the spray deposition rate. The distribution and deposition rate of spray liquid applied using three kinds of orchard sprayer were measured in a pear orchard and a peach orchard. The test results showed that the trailer sprayer had the highest deposition rates, with values of 31.54% and 56.92% on peach and pear trees, respectively. The deposition rates of the mounted sprayer in the peach and pear canopies were 21.75% and 40.61%, and the rates of the hand-held sprayer were 25.19% and 29.97%, respectively. The spray gun had the best droplet distribution uniformity, with CVs of the spray in the peach and pear canopies of 20.54% and 25.06%, respectively. The CVs in the peach and pear canopies were 35.98% and 26.54% for the trailer sprayer, and the CVs of the mounted sprayer were 92.52% and 94.90%, respectively. The canopy segmentation method could effectively be used to calculate the deposition rate and drioplet distribution in orchard application, while a great deal of time was consumed by counting the number of leaves in the different areas of the fruit tree canopies. Therefore, research on the density of branches and leaves in fruit tree canopies should be carried out in order to improve the efficiency of fruit tree canopy information extraction.

Diseases and pests are important factors in vegetable cultivation; they not only affect the growth and appearance of vegetables but also affect the yield and quality. The disease and pest control of vegetables is dominated by chemical sprays, for now. As a result, the excessive use of pesticides has been a crucial factor of pesticides’ non-point source pollution, and it is also the main cause of excessive pesticide residues in vegetables. Therefore, the design of efficient plant protection machinery and technology has become an urgent demand in order to ensure the quality and safety of vegetables. In this review, the machinery and technologies for vegetable protection are introduced from the aspects of chemical control and physical control. In the aspect of chemical control, handheld sprayers, self-propelled or track sprayers, fixed-pipe spray systems, vertical and horizontal boom sprayers, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and vegetable seed treatment techniques are introduced. In the aspect of physical control, soil physical disinfection, pest trapping technologies and ozone sterilizers are introduced. Finally, the existing problems and perspectives of pesticide application sprayers and physical control equipment for vegetables are summarized. This paper can provide references for vegetable growers and researchers.

Concerns about inappropriate storage, application rates, and disposal practices of pesticides prompted this case study of Vietnamese farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices. 128 small-scale vegetable growers in Lam Dong Province were included in field surveys, questionnaires, and interviews. Farmers reported inappropriate mixing of pesticides and disposal methods. Many also reported ill-timed applications posing potential hazards to the human health and environment. Improved training and monitoring of pesticide residues on foodstuffs and in agricultural soils and community water supplies are needed to ensure safe farmer practices. Community-based training and education, jointly funded by local, national, and international agricultural production and food safety groups, would be a cost-effective method of minimising pesticide applications and improving food safety.

Pesticide application by unmanned agricultural aerial vehicles (UAVs) has rapidly developed in China and other Asian counties. Currently, tank-mix spray adjuvants are usually added into pesticide solutions to reduce spray drift and facilitate droplet deposition and control efficacy. The currently used tank-mix adjuvants are all derived from conventional ground sprays, and their mechanisms of action in aerial applications are still unclear. In order to clarify the spraying characteristics and control efficacy of those adjuvants in aerial sprays, the performances of various types of tank-mix adjuvants were compared by analyzing droplet spectrum, drift potential index (DIX) in a wind tunnel, field deposition and control efficacy on wheat rust and aphids. The atomization results showed that the addition of adjuvants could change the droplet spectrum of liquid, and the results suggest that droplet size is an effective indicator of spray drift potential. In the field application, the meteorological conditions are complex and uncontrollable, and the effects of adjuvants on droplet deposition and distribution were not significant. Compared with the control solution, there was no significant difference in the deposition amount of each adjuvant solution, and the CVs of deposition were higher than 30%. Adding adjuvants to the spray solution can significantly improve the control efficacy of pesticides on wheat aphids and rust and also prolong the duration of the pesticide. Our results suggest that tank-mix adjuvants should be added when UAVs are used for aerial application. This study can be used as a reference to the research and development or selection of adjuvants in aerial sprays of UAVs.

Modern viticulture cannot be practiced without the use of plant protection products to control diseases like downy mildew, powdery mildew, and pests. In severely sloping vineyards, where mechanization is not possible, pesticide application is realized using spray guns, which is a laborious, expensive, and dangerous application technique. In these vineyards, where viticulture is defined as “heroic viticulture,” vine-growers could seriously take advantage of innovation in spray-technique applications. For this reason, several prototypes of a fixed spraying system (FSS) were realized in recent years. Two prototypes of a fixed spraying system were built in 2019 in two different vineyards in the Veneto region (north-eastern Italy). In both vineyards, the fixed spraying systems were used to perform pesticide application during the 2020 season to control downy mildew, powdery mildew, and pests. With this solution, both vineyards were successfully protected, resulting in comparable infection degrees and yields as the ones protected with airblast sprayers and spray guns. This study contributes to assert fixed spraying systems as an innovation that could improve working conditions, safety, timing, and performances of plant protection products’ application in heroic viticulture areas.

Introduction: Due to increasing air pollution, one of the ways to reduce pollution is to develop the green space, the urban parks, domestic gardens and streets marginal, including the ash trees, which play a vital role in supporting urban by its beauty and reducing air pollution. One of the convenient options to overshadow ash trees in their gardens. The jumping plant-louse, Psyllopsis discrepans is a sap-suckerpest which has highly host -specific and feed mainly on the young leaves and sprouts, is considered as important ash pests. Large populations of the pest cause the leaf curl gall and distort which result in leaf scar and less aesthetic appearance of ash canopy. The pest causes plant weakness by the toxic action of the saliva injected during their feeding process. The nymphal instar secreted honeydew which stimulates fungal growth on plant organs. There are a number of psyllid control methods which each of them has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The objective of this work was to verify the population fluctuation and assessing the spatial distribution of P. discrepans, in ash tree, Fraxinus rotundifolia Mill (Oleaceae) and in order to develop the best psyllid control plan, it is important that to weigh out the most effective options to reduce the population of this pest, in Kermanshah, western region of Iran. Materials and Methods: In this study the monitoring of P. discrepans population was carried out in urban areas of infested trees, using yellow adhesive traps with 50 m far from each other. Two sampling methods were took place the regular weekly from March 2014 to May 2015. nymphs tend to cling to the foliage when disturbed while the adults tend to jump and fly away. These differences in habit necessitated the use of two sampling techniques. The counts of eggs and nymphs were made by taking samples at each infested tree. The samples were placed individually in plastic bags and chilled in a refrigerator until they could be observed under a dissecting microscope and the counts made. Adult populations were sampled by yellow sticky traps. The counts obtained for the various life stage intervals are recorded. The population dynamics and spatial distribution models was calculated, using Taylor’s law and Iowa's model. For the winter and spring chemical pest control Acetamiprid insecticide and the winter oil (volk oil) were employed in a randomized complete block design with three treatments and four replications for the eggs control in 2014 in the green space. In the spring a combination of pesticides, acetamiprid and imidaclopriyd, was done in a randomized complete block design with six treatments and four replications were used for adults and nymphal stages control in 2015 at the faculty of agriculture, Razi University in Kermanshah green space. Results and Discussion: The results show that P. discrepans has two generations per year. The spring generation occurs in early April, the summer generation appears from late of June to beginning of October. The insect overwinters as eggs that hatch in early spring. The Taylor’s law showed cumulative spatial distribution in both years and the Iowa's model showed randomized spatial distribution in 2014, but showed cumulative spatial distribution in 2015. The Iowa's model based on coefficients of determination obtained (R=0.996) compared to the Taylor’s law (R=0.992) had a higher correlation with the data used to fit the data better than the Taylor rule. The pest control methods tested to reduce pest population levels, during winter and spering, including chemical control, physical control and combination of them. The chemical control results by volk oil and acetamiprid in compared with the control (water) in winter showed that effect of volk oil spray was better than acetamiprid on mortality all of stages. The results for pest control in the spring showed that the combination of spray chemical, imidacloprid + yellow sticky card trap to control this pest were more effective than the other treatments. The yellow sticky card trap supports Anthocoris sp. at the field condition, during chemical control program. In conclusion, the population dynamics of P. discrepans related to temperature and humidity. P. discrepan populations were found during month of the year, reaching their peak in May and September. Average and maximum temperatures showed a significant correlation with the psyllidae population fluctuation, affecting it positively. Heavy rain periods and low temperatures were not restricting, but they caused a reduction in population.

Canopy characterisation is a key factor for the success and efficiency of the pesticide application process in vineyards. Canopy measurements to determine the optimal volume rate are currently conducted manually, which is time-consuming and limits the adoption of precise methods for volume rate selection. Therefore, automated methods for canopy characterisation must be established using a rapid and reliable technology capable of providing precise information about crop structure. This research providedregression models for obtaining canopy characteristics of vineyards from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and satellite images collected in three significant growth stages. Between 2018 and 2019, a total of 1400 vines were characterised manually and remotely using a UAV and a satellite-based technology. The information collected from the sampled vines was analysed by two different procedures. First, a linear relationship between the manual and remote sensing data was investigated considering every single vine as a data point. Second, the vines were clustered based on three vigour levels in the parcel, and regression models were fitted to the average values of the ground-based and remote sensing-estimated canopy parameters. Remote sensing could detect the changes in canopy characteristics associated with vegetation growth. The combination of normalised differential vegetation index (NDVI) and projected area extracted from the UAV images is correlated with the tree row volume (TRV) when raw point data were used. This relationship was improved and extended to canopy height, width, leaf wall area, and TRV when the data were clustered. Similarly, satellite-based NDVI yielded moderate coefficients of determination for canopy width with raw point data, and for canopy width, height, and TRV when the vines were clustered according to the vigour. The proposed approach should facilitate the estimation of canopy characteristics in each area of a field using a cost-effective, simple, and reliable technology, allowing variable rate application in vineyards.

Spray distribution generated by axial fan sprayer, among other factors, should be critically analyzed, in order to prevent unnecessary costs and environmental contamination. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of the vertical volumetric distribution of an axial fan sprayer on the Brevipalpus phoenicis control efficiency. First, an assay was performed to evaluate the vertical volume distribution uniformity of the sprayer, assessing different spray nozzles configurations on the spray arcs, sides of the sprayer and spray heights. Afterwards, another experiment was carried out to analyze the relationship between the distribution of the Fenpyroximate acaricide on Coffea arabica L. and the B. phoenicis control efficiency. The treatments were arranged in a 4 x 2 factorial + 1 additional control, consisting of four spray volumes (200 L ha-1, 400 L ha-1, 600 L ha-1 and 800 L ha-1) and two spray nozzles configurations (1: 100 % of MAG1.5 nozzles; 2: upper extension with 5 MAG3.0 nozzles, middle extension with 9 MAG1.5 nozzles and lower extension with 4 MAG3.0 nozzles). Configuration 2 provided the smallest coefficient of variation (28 %). Nozzle configurations had no effect on the incidence of B. phoenicis. The use of nozzles with different flow rates on the spraying arc improves the vertical volumetric distribution uniformity of axial fan sprayers, but does not affect the B. phoenicis control efficiency.

Pneumatic spraying is especially sensitive to spray drift due to the production of small droplets that can be easily blown away from the treated field by the wind. Two prototypes of environmentally friendly pneumatic spouts were developed. The present work aims to check the effect of the spout modifications on the spray quality, to test the convenience of setting the liquid hose out of the spout in cannon-type and hand-type pneumatic nozzles and its effect on the droplet size, homogeneity and driftability in laboratory conditions. Laboratory trials simulating a real sprayer were conducted to test the influence of the hose insertion position (HP), including conventional (CP), alternative (AP), outer (OP) and extreme (XP), as well as the liquid flow rate (LFR) and the airflow speed (AS) on the droplet size (D50, D10 and D90), homogeneity and driftability (V100). Concurrently, the droplet size spectra obtained by the combination of aforementioned parameters (HP × LFR × AS) in both nozzles were also classified according to the ASABE S572.1. Results showed a marked reduction of AS outside the air spout, which led to droplet size increase. This hypothesis was confirmed by the droplet size spectra measured (D50, D10, D90 and V100). A clear influence of HP was found on every dependent variable, including those related with the droplet size. In both nozzles, the longer the distance to CP, the coarser the sprayed drops. Moreover, LFR and AS significantly increased and reduced droplet size, respectively. A higher heterogeneity in the generated drops was obtained in XP. This position yielded V100 values similar to those of the hydraulic low-drift nozzles, showing an effective drift reduction potential. The classification underlines that the variation of HP, alongside AS and LFR, allowed varying the spray quality from very fine to coarse/very coarse, providing farmers with a wide range of options to match the drift-reducing environmental requirements and the treatment specifications for every spray application.

Study of the potential for the use of controlled droplet application (CDA) upon cereal crops. A review. Introduction. Controlled droplet application (CDA) has the advantage both of the reduction in the span of droplet size distribution and in the volume of liquid applied, in comparison with conventional hydraulic nozzles. Literature. This review investigates the potential for the use of CDA relative to hydraulic nozzles within the early stages of weed control (2-3 leaves). The studies reviewed examine spray retention, linking the droplet characteristics (size, velocity and direction) of spray liquids with the architecture, density and wettability of the foliage. These studies show that the use of droplets of 300 µm, combined with an appropriate adjuvant and applied with a 60° forward-angled spray, led to the enhanced depositing of liquids on upright surfaces. Assessment of the reduced volumes applied by both application techniques was based on the mean, the variation coefficient and the deposition coverage. However, these results cannot be generalized, due to the different operative settings in which the spray application techniques were employed. Regarding the risk of drift to the side, the drift potential of droplets generated horizontally by CDA nozzles is greater than that of the conventional technique with a downward orientation of spray. The drift potential increases as the wind velocity increases and the volume median diameter (DV50) decreases. Conclusions. New settings of CDA nozzles in terms of DV50 and the direction of spray may address the challenge of precision agriculture. Innovative ways to apply pesticides, based on CDA, must be explored in order to avoid the sensitivity to wear of the teeth in spray applicators and to obtain a narrower droplet-size distribution.

Canopy characteristics are crucial for accurately and safely determining the pesticide quantity and volume of water used for spray applications in vineyards. The inevitably high degree of intraplot variability makes it difficult to develop a global solution for the optimal volume application rate. Here, the design procedure of, and the results obtained from, a variable rate application (VRA) sprayer are presented. Prescription maps were generated after detailed canopy characterization, using a multispectral camera embedded on an unmanned aerial vehicle, throughout the entire growing season in Torrelavit (Barcelona) in four vineyard plots of Chardonnay (2.35 ha), Merlot (2.97 ha), and Cabernet Sauvignonn (4.67 ha). The maps were obtained by merging multispectral images with information provided by DOSAVIÑA®, a decision support system, to determine the optimal volume rate. They were then uploaded to the VRA prototype, obtaining actual variable application maps after the application processes were complete. The prototype had an adequate spray distribution quality, with coverage values in the range of 20−40% and exhibited similar results in terms of biological efficacy on powdery mildew compared to conventional (and constant) application volumes. The VRA results demonstrated an accurate and reasonable pesticide distribution, with potential for reduced disease damage even in cases with reduced amounts of plant protection products and water.

The use of pesticides in agriculture is a significant problem at a global level, not only from an environmental perspective but also from the farmers’ health and safety point of view. In the literature, several studies have discussed the safe behavior and risk perception of farmers. However, human errors when dealing with pesticides and the related work equipment are rarely considered. To reduce this research gap, a study of the human safety errors in pesticide use based on hierarchical task analysis is proposed. In particular, such a bottom-up approach was applied to vineyard cultivation and considered all the activities that operators carry out when using pesticides. The results of this study showed that most of the identified human errors were action errors, i.e., potential failures of the operator in completing the activity successfully. In addition, retrieval and checking errors resulted in being rather common. These outputs shed light on the gap between the information received and the practical need for operators to reduce their failure to perform specific activities. Therefore, while the present study augments current knowledge on the safe use of pesticides, further research is needed to address human errors in agricultural activities, thus extending these results to a larger sample size as well as to other cultivation types.

Solid set canopy delivery systems (SSCDS) are a novel foliar agrochemical delivery system designed as an alternative for airblast sprayers in high density fruit production. This study tested the pest management potential, coverage, and chemical deposition of an SSCDS using commercially available microsprinkler components over the course of a growing season. Spray coverage and deposition for a representative airblast sprayer and SSCDS were evaluated using water sensitive paper and tartrazine dye, respectively. Foliar sprays for pest suppression were applied through both systems, and damage assessments were taken at the midpoint and end of the growing season. SSCDS sprays demonstrated similar levels of coverage on the adaxial leaf surface as airblast sprays, but significantly lower coverage on the abaxial surface. However, mean levels of foliar chemical deposition was generally higher in the SSCDS. Evaluations found minimal arthropod and fungal damage in both airblast and SSCDS treated plots compared to untreated trees. The SSCDS was shown to be a viable alternative to the airblast, with inherent advantages such as rapid application time and improved worker safety. Furthermore, higher deposition on SSCDS treated foliage supports the hypothesis that SSCDS provide a higher droplet capture rate in the canopy, with less off-target loss and drift than airblast sprayers.

Distance learning presents great potential for mitigating field problems on pesticide application technology. Thus, due to the lack of teaching material about pesticide spraying technology in the Portuguese language and the increasing availability of distance learning, this study developed and evaluated a computer program for distance learning about the theory of pesticide spraying technology using the tools of information technology. The modules comprising the course, named Pulverizar, were: (1) Basic concepts, (2) Factors that affect application, (3) Equipments, (4) Spraying nozzles, (5) Sprayer calibration, (6) Aerial application, (7) Chemigation, (8) Physical-chemical properties, (9) Formulations, (10) Adjuvants, (11) Water quality, and (12) Adequate use of pesticides. The program was made available to the public on July 1st, 2008, hosted at the web site www.pulverizar.iciag.ufu.br, and was simple, robust and practical on the complementation of traditional teaching for the education of professionals in Agricultural Sciences. Mastering pesticide spraying technology by people involved in agricultural production can be facilitated by the program Pulverizar, which was well accepted in its initial evaluation.O ensino à distância apresenta grande potencial para minorar os problemas ocorridos no campo na área de tecnologia de aplicação de agroquímicos. Dessa forma, diante da escassez de material instrucional na área de tecnologia de aplicação de agroquímicos em Português e do crescimento elevado da educação à distância, o objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver e avaliar um programa computacional para o ensino à distância da parte teórica de tecnologia de aplicação de agroquímicos, utilizando as ferramentas de tecnologia da informação. Os módulos que compuseram o curso, intitulado Pulverizar, foram: (1) Conceitos básicos, (2) Fatores que afetam a aplicação, (3) Equipamentos, (4) Pontas de pulverização, (5) Calibração de pulverizadores, (6) Aplicação aérea, (7) Quimigação, (8) Propriedades físico-químicas, (9) Formulações, (10) Adjuvantes, (11) Qualidade da água e (12) Uso adequado de agroquímicos. O programa desenvolvido foi disponibilizado ao público no dia 1 de julho de 2008, hospedado no sítio www.pulverizar.iciag.ufu.br, mostrando-se simples, robusto e prático no complemento ao ensino tradicional para a formação de profissionais da área de Ciências Agrárias. O domínio da tecnologia de aplicação de agroquímicos por parte das pessoas envolvidas na produção agrícola pode ser incrementado por meio do programa Pulverizar, que teve boa aceitação em seu processo de avaliação inicial.

As a new low volume application technology, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) application is developing quickly in China. The aim of this study was to compare the droplet deposition, control efficacy and working efficiency of a six-rotor UAV with a self-propelled boom sprayer and two conventional knapsack sprayers on the wheat crop. The total deposition of UAV and other sprayers were not statistically significant, but significantly lower for run-off. The deposition uniformity and droplets penetrability of the UAV were poor. The deposition variation coefficient of the UAV was 87.2%, which was higher than the boom sprayer of 31.2%. The deposition on the third top leaf was only 50.0% compared to the boom sprayer. The area of coverage of the UAV was 2.2% under the spray volume of 10 L/ha. The control efficacy on wheat aphids of UAV was 70.9%, which was comparable to other sprayers. The working efficiency of UAV was 4.11 ha/h, which was roughly 1.7–20.0 times higher than the three other sprayers. Comparable control efficacy results suggest that UAV application could be a viable strategy to control pests with higher efficiency. Further improvement on deposition uniformity and penetrability are needed.

A inspeção periódica de pulverizadores é uma importante ferramenta para melhorar a tecnologia de aplicação de defensivos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o estado de funcionamento de pulverizadores agrícolas na região de Uberlândia - MG, e a metodologia de inspeção para as condições brasileiras. As avaliações foram realizadas em propriedades rurais visitadas aleatoriamente e consistiram em um questionário preenchido pelo operador das máquinas e da inspeção propriamente dita dos pulverizadores. Os itens avaliados foram: existência de vazamentos, mangueiras e conexões, filtros, válvulas antigotejo, pontas de pulverização na barra, proteção de partes móveis, orientação por faixa e monitoramento das condições climáticas. A inspeção mostrou a necessidade da implantação de um programa de avaliação frequente desses equipamentos, visto que a manutenção dos pulverizadores hidráulicos de barra está sendo feita de forma incorreta. A metodologia utilizada mostrou-se adequada para a avaliação qualitativa do estado de funcionamento de pulverizadores agrícolas.Sprayer periodic inspection is an important tool to improve pesticide application technology. The objective of this work was to evaluate the working conditions of boom sprayers in the region of Uberlândia - MG, and the inspection methodology for Brazilian conditions. The evaluations were done in farm properties randomly visited and consisted of a questionnaire filled out by the equipment operator and by the inspection team during the in loco visits. The items evaluated were: presence of leakage, hoses and connections, filters, anti-dripping gauges, spray nozzles, protection of mobile parts, guidance by track and environmental conditions monitoring. The results indicated the need to implement a frequent evaluation program for this equipment, since boom maintenance is being done incorrectly. The method used was adequate to evaluate the working conditions of the agricultural boom sprayers.

The effect of spray liquid leaves coverage on efficacy of herbicides was investigated. Five nozzles sizes were used to reach different percentage coverage. The effect of leaves coverage on Elytrigia repens (L.) Desv. was evaluated using systemic herbicide (clethodim 240 g / l + surfactant) and the effect of leaves coverage on Chenopodium album L. and Galium aparine L. was evaluated using contact herbicides (bentazone 600 g / l and the mixture of bentazone 480 g / l + activator 150 g / l). No significant differences of the efficacy were observed between different percentages of leaves coverage in case of systemic herbicides. Vice versa the efficacy significantly increased with higher percentage of leaves coverage in case of contact herbicides.

Tracer substances, used to evaluate spraying effectiveness, ordinarily modify the surface tension of aqueous solutions. This study aimed to establish a method of using tracers to evaluate distribution and amount of spray deposits, adjusted to the surface tension of the spraying solution. The following products were tested: 0.15% Brilliant Blue, 0.15% Saturn Yellow in 0.015% Vixilperse lignosulfonate, and 0.005% sodium fluorescein, and mixtures of Brilliant Blue plus Saturn Yellow and Brilliant Blue plus sodium fluorescein at the same concentrations. Solutions were deposited on citrus leaves and stability was determined by measuring fluorescence and optical density of solutions without drying, dried in the dark and exposed to sunlight for 2, 4 and 8 h. These values were compared to those obtained directly in water. The static surface tension of the tracer solution was determined by weighing droplets formed during a period of 20 to 40 seconds. The Brilliant Blue and Saturn Yellow mixture at 0.15% was stable under all conditions tested. It was not absorbed by the leaves and maintained the same surface tension as that of water, thus permitting concentration adjustment to the same levels used for agrochemical products, and allowing the development of a qualitative method based on visual evaluation of the distribution of the pigment under ultraviolet light and of a quantitative method based on the determination of the amount of the dye deposited in the same solution. Spray deposition could be evaluated at different surface tensions of the spraying solution, simulating the effect of agrochemical formulations.

The effect of droplet spectra on efficiency of contact and systemic herbicides was evaluated. As a model components were used: mixture of clethodim 240 g/l + surfactant (90% raps fluid, 10% polyetoxyl esters); bentazon 600 g/l and bentazon 480 g/l + Wettol LF 150 g/l. The effect of droplet spectra on Elytrigia repens (L.) Desv. was evaluated using systemic herbicide (clethodim 240 g/l + surfactant). No significant differences of the efficiency were observed between different droplet sizes at the treatments of mixture of clethodim + adjuvant between very different droplet size ranging from VMD = 193 µm to VMD = 929 µm. The effect of droplet spectra on Chenopodium album L. and Galium aparine L. was evaluated using contact herbicides (bentazon 600 g/l and bentazon 480 g/l + Wettol LF 150 g/l). Six droplet spectra, ranging from VMD = 183 µm to VMD = 911 µm, were used. The efficiency significantly increased with smaller droplet sizes. The worst results were achieved by droplet spectra of 586 µm and 911 µm for both bentazon 600 g/l and bentazon 480 g/l + Wettol LF 150 g/l. Effect of droplet spectra is more pronounced in contact compounds. Translocation of systemic compounds may be the main mechanism that nullifies the effect of the droplets size and lower leaf coverage.

A utilização de sacos plásticos graduados para a medida da vazão de pulverizadores está ba stante di fundida entre técnicos e agricultores. 0 seu emprego é simples, consistindo, basicamente, em se coletar o líquido pulverizado por um bico durante o período equivalente ao deslocamento de 50 metros. O volume coletado é indicado numa escala graduada impr essa nos sacos calib rad ores e fornece diretament e a vazão em 1/ha. Firmas que comercializam os agro fármacos distribuem esses instrumentos aos agricultores, muitas vezes com propósitos puramente promocionais. Cinco sacos graduados de cada uma das 6 marcas diferentes foram aferidos. Agua a 20°C foi adicionada até as marcas de 100 1/ha, 250 1/ha e 400 1/ha. Esses volumes foram medidos em pro veta graduada e o volume real de pulverização foi calculado. Todos os saquinhos testados mostraram erros, em alguns bastante elevados, atingindo desvios de até 35,2%. Considerando esses resultados, é recomendada maior atenção na fabricação desses instrumentos. São sugeridas também algumas modificações da maneira de imprimir a escala e no conteúdo das instruções de uso.The utilization of graded poly then e bags for meas urement of spray throught put is current practice among technicians and farmers. It s us e is very simple, basically, the liquid sprayed from one nozzle is collected during a period equivalent to run 50 meters. The volume collected is indicated on a scale printed on the bags with gives the spray volume in 1/ ha directly. Free sample of these plastic calibrators are distributed for promotional purpose by the pesticides companies. Five bags of each of 6 different brands were checked. Water at 20°C was filled in to the level of 100 1/ha, 250 1/ha and 400 1/ha. These volumes were meas ured in a standardized measuring cylinder and the actual spray volume calculated. Positive and negative errors of measure ment were found in all graded polithe ne bags. The largest error was 35,2% higher than the indicated mark. Considering these results one can recommend more accuracy in manufacturing such a device. It is also suggested modifications in printing graded scale and operating instructions.
