The differential diagnosis of osteoblastoma-like osteosarcoma from osteoblastoma and aggressive osteoblastoma remains controversial and challenging. Previous studies suggest that these three types of tumor are distinct entities. However, working out a precise diagnosis may not always be possible immediately on the basis of initial clinical, radiological, and histopathological features. On the other hand, the importance of a correct diagnosis cannot be overemphasized since the treatment strategies change dramatically according to the nature of the lesion. In all of our cases, initial Tru-Cut biopsies revealed osteoblastic features with minimal atypia, but further biopsies confirmed malignancy. A high index of suspicion and considerable experience are prerequisites for accurate diagnosis in case of clinicopathological and radiological discordance. Abstract Background It has been demonstrated that brief episodes of sublethal ischemia-reperfusion, so-called ischemic preconditioning, provide powerful tissue protection in different tissues such as heart, brain, skeletal muscle, lung, liver, intestine, kidney, retina, and endothelial cells. Although a recent study has claimed that there are no protective effects of ischemic preconditioning in rat testis, the protective effects of ischemic preconditioning on testicular tissue have not been investigated adequately. The present study was thus planned to investigate whether ischemic preconditioning has a protective effect on testicular tissue. Methods Rats were divided into seven groups that each contained seven rats. In group 1 (control group), only unilateral testicular ischemia was performed by creating a testicular torsion by a 720 degree clockwise rotation for 180 min. In group 2, group 3, group 4, group 5, group 6, and group 7, unilateral testicular ischemia was performed for 180 min following different periods of ischemic preconditioning. The ischemic preconditioning periods were as follows: 10 minutes of ischemia with 10 minutes of reperfusion in group 2; 20 minutes of ischemia with 10 minutes of reperfusion in group 3; 30 minutes of ischemia with 10 minutes of reperfusion in group 4; multiple preconditioning periods were used (3 × 10 min early phase transient ischemia with 10 min reperfusion in all episodes) in group 5; multiple preconditioning periods were used (5, 10, and 15 min early phase transient ischemia with 10 min reperfusion in all episodes) in group 6; and, multiple preconditioning periods were used (10, 20, and 30 min early phase transient ischemia with 10 min reperfusion in all episodes) in group 7. After the ischemic protocols were carried out, animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and testicular tissue samples were taken for biochemical measurements (protein, malondialdehyde, nitric oxide) and histological examination. Results Although decreased tissue malondialdehyde levels were detected in the groups of 2, 3, 4, and 5 compared to group 1, significant decreases were observed in only group 2 and group 5 (p < .05). Nitric oxide levels were numerically decreased in all groups compared to the control group but was statistically significant only in group 5 (p < .05). Histopathological examination demonstrated that all groups subjected to ischemic preconditioning had less tissue damage than group 1 (p < .05). Conclusion These results suggest that ischemic preconditioning provides tissue protection in testicular tissue.

Abstract Background The preservation of cut flowers, particularly Gerbera jamesonii, is crucial for maintaining their aesthetic value and extending vase life in the floriculture industry. To address this challenge, this study investigated the effects of melatonin (Mel) and encapsulated melatonin with nanochitosan (nCS-Mel) as preservative solutions on cut Gerbera jamesonii cv. ‘Terra kalina’ flowers. In research, we examined various physiological and biochemical parameters, including relative water content, membrane stability index, carbohydrate content, and antioxidant enzyme activities, to evaluate the efficacy of these treatments in prolonging the vase life and quality of cut gerbera flowers under controlled environmental conditions. Results Our results demonstrated that cut Gerbera jamesonii flowers maintained in vase solutions containing 0.1 and 0.5 mM nCS-Mel exhibited enhanced preservation of cell membrane integrity and anthocyanin content, while also maintaining higher levels of carbohydrates and total flavonoids in petals at the conclusion of their vase life. A decline in petal relative water content and protein levels was observed concomitantly with petal senescence, whereas total phenolic compounds showed an increase. The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content in petals exhibited an upward trend during vase life in control specimens, but this effect was mitigated in treatments containing melatonin. Although malondialdehyde (MDA) content generally increased throughout the vase life period, flowers subjected to either Mel or nCS-Mel treatments displayed reduced MDA accumulation. The activity of catalase (CAT) demonstrated an increasing trend during vase life, with the maximum activity observed in Gerbera flowers treated with 0.1 mM nCS-Mel. A similar upward trend was noted for superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, with flowers in 0.5 mM nCS-Mel treatment exhibiting peak SOD values on day 12 relative to control and other treatments. Peroxidase (POD) activity also increased across all treatments, with particularly pronounced effects in vase solutions containing 0.1 mM Mel and nCS-Mel. Notably, flowers placed in vase solutions containing 0.1 mM nCS-Mel, followed by 0.5 mM nCS-Mel and 0.1 mM Mel, exhibited the most prolonged vase life, extending up to 12, 10.66, and 10.33 days, respectively, under room temperature conditions. Conclusions The application of nanoencapsulated melatonin as a vase solution for cut Gerbera jamesonii flowers demonstrates significant potential in extending vase life and maintaining flower quality through enhanced preservation of cellular integrity, antioxidant activity, and biochemical parameters. This innovative approach not only outperforms conventional treatments but also presents a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional antimicrobial preservatives and sugars, offering a promising solution for the floriculture industry to improve cut flower longevity and reduce ecological impact.

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of anthropometric measurements for two-stranded peroneus longus tendon (PLT) graft thickness using ultrasonography Materials and methods A prospective study was conducted on 204 healthy volunteers (102 males and 102 females) aged 18–40 years. Anthropometric measurements were recorded, including height, weight, body mass index (BMI), fibular length, calf circumference, and ankle circumference. The Tegner Activity Scale (TAS) was used to assess activity levels. PLT cross-sectional area (CSA) was measured using ultrasonography. Two-stranded PLT graft thickness was calculated using the previously reported formula by Luo et al. A thickness of less than 8 mm of PLT graft was accepted as an insufficient autograft for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Correlation and regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of two-stranded PLT graft thickness. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to establish the best threshold values. Results Males had a significantly greater PLT CSA (0.17 ± 0.03 cm2) and predicted two-stranded PLT graft thickness (8.1 ± 0.6 mm) compared with females (0.15 ± 0.03 cm2 and 7.5 ± 0.6 mm, respectively; p

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of circumferential patellar denervation in reducing anterior knee pain (AKP) and improving clinical outcomes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) without patellar resurfacing. Materials and methods This prospective, non-randomized, observational study included patients who underwent primary TKA at our institution between August 2023 and January 2024. Patients were divided into two groups: those who received patellar denervation (PD group) and those who did not (NPD group). The primary outcome was the reduction in anterior knee pain (AKP), measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes included the Kujala Knee Score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), and range of motion (ROM). Assessments were conducted preoperatively and at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Results Four patients in the PD group and five in the NPD group were excluded from the study due to failure to complete follow-up. Thus, 74 female and 16 male patients with a mean age of 67.4 ± 4.2 years were included in the final analysis. There were no significant differences between the two groups with respect to age, sex, side of surgery, height, weight, BMI, grade of patellofemoral osteoarthritis, preoperative ROM, VAS score, Kujala score, and WOMAC score (p: n.s. for all variables). No significant differences were found between the groups for VAS, Kujala, and WOMAC scores at any time point (p: n.s.). Significant improvements in these scores over time were indicated by repeated measures ANOVA (p = 0.001 for both groups). Pairwise comparisons showed significant improvements from preoperative to postoperative months three and six and from postoperative months three to six (p = 0.001 for all comparisons). Both groups experienced decreased knee ROM at third month, which returned to preoperative values at sixth month with no significant differences. No complications were observed during the study. Conclusions Circumferential patellar denervation does not provide additional benefit in reducing anterior knee pain or improving functional outcomes compared to the non-denervation approach in TKA without patellar resurfacing. Abstract In contemporary floriculture, particularly within the cut flower industry, there is a burgeoning interest in innovative methodologies aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal and prolonging the postharvest longevity of floral specimens. Within this context, the application of nanotechnology, specifically the utilization of silicon and selenium nanoparticles, has emerged as a promising approach for augmenting the qualitative attributes and extending the vase life of cut roses. This study evaluated the impact of silicon dioxide (SiO2-NPs) and selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) in preservative solutions on the physio-chemical properties of ‘Black Magic’ roses. Preservative solutions were formulated with varying concentrations of SiO2-NPs (25 and 50 mg L−1) and Se-NPs (10 and 20 mg L−1), supplemented with a continuous treatment of 3% sucrose. Roses treated with 20 mg L−1 Se-NPs exhibited the lowest relative water loss, highest solution uptake, maximum photochemical performance of PSII (Fv/Fm), and elevated antioxidative enzyme activities. The upward trajectory of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in petals was mitigated by different levels of SiO2 and Se-NPs, with the lowest H2O2 and MDA observed in preservatives containing 50 mg L−1 SiO2- and 20 mg L−1 Se-NPs at the 15th day, surpassing controls and other treatments. Extended vase life and a substantial enhancement in antioxidative capacity were noted under Se and Si nanoparticles in preservatives. The levels of total phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanin increased during the vase period, particularly in the 50 and 20 mg L−1 Se-NPs and SiO2-NPs. Petal carbohydrate exhibited a declining trend throughout the longevity, with reductions of 8% and 66% observed in 20 mg L−1 Se-NPs and controls, respectively. The longest vase life was achieved with Se-NPs (20 mg L−1), followed by SiO2-NPs (50 mg L−1) up to 16.6 and 15th days, respectively. These findings highlight the significant potential of SiO2- and Se-NPs in enhancing the vase life and physiological qualities of ‘Black Magic’ roses, with SiO2-NPs showing broad-spectrum efficacy.

Introduction: Understanding the variations of abdominal vascular structures is important for preventing complications of abdominal surgical procedures for gastrointestinal disease such as necrotizing enterocolitis or others that may arise in patients with congenital cardiac disease. We analysed the coeliac trunk and its branches in children with congenital heart disease to determine whether there is a greater prevalence of associated vascular abnormalities. Methods: We retrospectively analysed thoracic computed tomography (CT) angiograms performed in our hospital in paediatric patients with congenital heart disease. We documented the anatomical variations observed in abdominal sections in which the coeliac trunk and hepatic arteries were included in the field of view. We used the Uflacker classification to describe anatomical variants of the coeliac trunk, and the Michels classification and its modified version (Hiatt classification) to describe the anatomy of the hepatic artery system. Results: Our study included 178 patients with congenital heart disease. We identified coeliac trunk variants in 10.7% of the patients. Gastrosplenic trunk was to the most prevalent variant, amounting to 5.6% of total cases. We found hepatic artery variations in 19.1% of the patients. According to the Michels classification, the prevalence of accessory left hepatic artery arising from the left gastric artery as 4.5%, compared to 6.7% based on the Hiatt classification. Conclusion: The prevalence of coeliac trunk and hepatic artery variations in patients with congenital heart disease was not greater in our study compared to other series in the literature. Clinicians must be vigilant about the variations detected in multislice CT scans to avoid complications resulting from vascular abnormalities, especially in patients who undergo abdominal surgery. Resumen: Introducción: Comprender las variaciones de las estructuras vasculares abdominales es importante para prevenir complicaciones de procedimientos quirúrgicos abdominales por enfermedades gastrointestinales, como la enterocolitis necrotizante u otras que pueden desarrollarse en pacientes con cardiopatías congénitas. Se examinará el tronco celíaco y sus ramas en niños con cardiopatía congénita para determinar si hay una mayor prevalencia de anomalías concomitantes. Métodos: Exploración retrospectiva de pacientes pediátricos con cardiopatías congénitas sometidos a una angiotomografía computarizada (angio-TC) en nuestro hospital. Se registraron las variaciones anatómicas en secciones abdominales en las que el plano de adquisición incluía el tronco celíaco y las arterias hepáticas. Se utilizó el método de Uflacker para describir las variantes anatómicas del tronco celíaco. Las variaciones en el sistema de la arteria hepática se caracterizaron mediante la clasificación de Michels y la versión modificada de Hiatt. Resultados: La muestra incluyó a 178 pacientes pediátricos con cardiopatías congénitas. Se encontraron variaciones de la arteria celíaca en el 10,7% de los pacientes. La variante más prevalente era el tronco gastroesplénico, que representaba el 5,6% de todos los casos. La prevalencia de variaciones de la arteria hepática fue del 19,1%. La prevalencia observada de arteria hepática izquierda accesoria con origen en la arteria gástrica izquierda fue del 4,5%, según la clasificación de Michels y del 6,7% según la clasificación de Hiatt. Conclusión: En nuestro estudio, no se observó una prevalencia mayor de variaciones del tronco celíaco y de la arteria hepática en pacientes con cardiopatías congénitas en comparación con lo descrito en series previas. Los médicos deben prestar atención a las variaciones detectadas en las tomografías computarizadas multicorte para evitar complicaciones derivadas de variaciones vasculares, especialmente en pacientes sometidos a cirugía abdominal.

Abstract Background Drought is a significant abiotic stress that adversely affects plant growth, development, and metabolic processes, thereby reducing plant yield, quality, and production, and threatening global food security. In recent years, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising strategy to overcome the existing environmental challenges and has been tested on some plant species. But it is still awaiting investigation for grapevines. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) to modulate some morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters in grapevine saplings (5 BB/Crimson Seedless, 41 B/Crimson Seedless, and 1103 P/Crimson Seedless) under drought stress conditions. Results In the study, Se-NP solutions at different concentrations (0 (control), 1, 10, and 100 ppm) were applied by the spray method to wet the entire green surface of grapevine saplings grown under well-irrigated (90–100% field capacity) and drought stress (40–50% field capacity) conditions. Our results showed that 10 ppm Se-NP concentration had the most positive effect, 1 ppm concentration showed limited effects, and 100 ppm concentration led to toxic effects, especially when combined with drought conditions. Se-NP applications at 10 ppm concentration improved the growth parameters (leaf number, leaf area, root fresh and dry weight, shoot fresh and dry weight, etc.) and increased the SPAD index of grapevine saplings under both normal and drought conditions. Additionally, 10 ppm Se-NP applications improved the relative water content (RWC) and stomatal conductance values, proportional to the increases in protein content. On the other hand, under drought conditions, the drought index, leaf temperature, membrane damage index, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels significantly decreased as a result of 10 ppm Se-NP applications, showing an opposite trend. Furthermore, the levels of proline, total phenolics, and antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD, and APX) that rose significantly due to drought stress were reduced by 10 ppm Se-NP applications, which also helped to lessen the oxidative stress caused by the drought. Conclusion The study concluded that foliar application of Se-NPs at 10 ppm significantly enhances drought tolerance in grapevine saplings by improving antioxidant defense, proline and protein accumulation, and overall growth, while lower concentrations are less effective and higher concentrations can cause phytotoxicity. These findings indicate that Se-NPs applications may hold promise not only for grapevines but also for mitigating drought stress effects and improving productivity in other economically important fruit species, warranting further exploration across diverse crop systems. Abstract Purpose This study aims to evaluate the long-term outcomes of saphenous nerve (SN) injuries from hamstring tendon harvesting during ACL reconstruction, focusing on clinical results and patient satisfaction after at least two years. Additionally, it investigates the incidence, recovery patterns, and impact of these injuries on functional outcomes, daily activities, and ACL re-rupture rates immediately post-surgery and at final follow-up. Materials and methods A retrospective review was conducted on patients who had undergone ACL reconstruction with hamstring tendon grafts at a single institution between January 2015 and January 2020. The incidence of SN injuries was assessed immediately after surgery and at final follow-up. Additionally, the recovery rate and time were evaluated, and the impact of these injuries on functional outcomes was measured using the Lysholm Knee Score (LKS) and patient-reported effects on daily activities. Results Of the 159 patients analyzed, iatrogenic SN injuries were initially observed in 87 (54.7%) patients post-ACLR. By the final follow-up, paresthesia had resolved in 36 (22.6%) patients within an average of 11.1 months. Persistent SN injuries were recorded in 51 (32.1%) patients, affecting various extents of the infrapatellar branch (IPBSN) and the sartorial branch (SBSN) of the saphenous nerve. Patients with persistent SN injuries experienced a significant impact on daily activities and had lower LKS scores compared to those without injuries or with recovered injuries. Furthermore, a higher re-rupture rate was associated with persistent SN injuries. Conclusions The study finds that SN injuries during hamstring graft harvesting for ACL reconstruction are common, with a significant portion of patients experiencing persistent sensory deficits for at least two years postoperatively. These injuries are observed to adversely affect patient satisfaction and functional outcomes and to increase the re-rupture rate.

Abstract Background A study on photosynthetic and enzyme activity changes and mineral content in lettuce under cadmium stress has been conducted in a greenhouse, utilizing the modulated effect of zinc (Zn) application in the nutrient solution on lettuce. Zn is a micronutrient that plays an essential role in various critical plant processes. Accordingly, three concentrations of Zn (0.022, 5, and 10 mg L− 1) were applied to hydroponically grown lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Ferdos) under three concentrations of Cd toxicity (0, 2.5, and 5 mg L− 1). Results The results showed that along with increasing concentrations of zinc in the nutrient solution, growth traits such as plant performance, chlorophyll index (SPAD), minimum fluorescence (F0), leaf zinc content (Zn), leaf and root iron (Fe) content, manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and cadmium increased as well. The maximum amounts of chlorophyll a (33.9 mg g− 1FW), chlorophyll b (17.3 mg g− 1FW), carotenoids (10.7 mg g− 1FW), maximum fluorescence (Fm) (7.1), and variable fluorescence (Fv) (3.47) were observed in the treatment with Zn without Cd. Along with an increase in Cd concentration in the nutrient solution, the maximum amounts of leaf proline (5.93 mmol g− 1FW), malondialdehyde (MDA) (0.96 μm g− 1FW), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (22.1 μm g− 1FW), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (90.3 Unit mg− 1 protein) were recorded in lettuce treated with 5 mg L− 1 of Cd without Zn. Additionally, the maximum activity of leaf guaiacol peroxidase (6.46 Unit mg− 1 protein) was obtained with the application of Cd at a 5 mg L− 1 concentration. Conclusions In general, an increase in Zn concentration in the nutrient solution decreased the absorption and toxicity of Cd in lettuce leaves, as demonstrated in most of the measured traits. These findings suggest that supplementing hydroponic nutrient solutions with zinc can mitigate the detrimental effects of cadmium toxicity on lettuce growth and physiological processes, offering a promising strategy to enhance crop productivity and food safety in cadmium-contaminated environments.

Abstract Background Boron (B) is a micronutrient, but excessive levels can cause phytotoxicity, impaired growth, and reduced photosynthesis. B toxicity arises from over-fertilization, high soil B levels, or irrigation with B-rich water. Conversely, silicon (Si) is recognized as an element that mitigates stress and alleviates the toxic effects of certain nutrients. In this study, to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of Si on maize under boron stress conditions, a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design was conducted with three replications in a hydroponic system. The experiment utilized a nutrient solution for maize var. Merit that contained three different boron (B) concentrations (0.5, 2, and 4 mg L−1) and three Si concentrations (0, 28, and 56 mg L−1). Results Our findings unveiled that exogenous application of B resulted in a substantial escalation of B concentration in maize leaves. Furthermore, B exposure elicited a significant diminution in fresh and dry plant biomass, chlorophyll index, chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), carotenoids, and membrane stability index (MSI). As the B concentration augmented, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and catalase (CAT) enzyme activity exhibited a concomitant increment. Conversely, the supplementation of Si facilitated an amelioration in plant fresh and dry weight, total carbohydrate, and total soluble protein. Moreover, the elevated activity of antioxidant enzymes culminated in a decrement in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and MDA content. In addition, the combined influence of Si and B had a statistically significant impact on the leaf chlorophyll index, total chlorophyll (a + b) content, Si and B accumulation levels, as well as the enzymatic activities of guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and H2O2 levels. These unique findings indicated the detrimental impact of B toxicity on various physiological and biochemical attributes of maize, while highlighting the potential of Si supplementation in mitigating the deleterious effects through modulation of antioxidant machinery and biomolecule synthesis. Conclusions This study highlights the potential of Si supplementation in alleviating the deleterious effects of B toxicity in maize. Increased Si consumption mitigated chlorophyll degradation under B toxicity, but it also caused a significant reduction in the concentrations of essential micronutrients iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). While Si supplementation shows promise in counteracting B toxicity, the observed decrease in Fe, Cu, and Zn concentrations warrants further investigation to optimize this approach and maintain overall plant nutritional status.

Abstract Background The exploration of EOs and their impact on primary metabolites in agricultural products, such as grapes, holds significant importance in the post-harvest preservation and enhancement of berry quality. Therefore, our research aimed to dissect the effects of various EO treatments on the biochemical composition of grapes, specifically examining alterations in sugar, organic acid, and amino acid levels. Results Our findings highlighted that the OF treatment, a combination of Eugenol and Botrytis cinerea, significantly escalated sugar content, with remarkable increases in sucrose, glucose, and fructose compared to the control group. The SF treatment led to the highest levels of certain organic acids, including tartaric, butyric, and malonic acids, whereas the TO treatment prominently augmented amino acids such as tyrosine and phenylalanine. Utilizing PCA, our study effectively captured the variability within the treatment dataset, revealing distinct clusters of treatments and their correlations with specific metabolites. The PCA biplot underscored the influence of treatments on metabolic profile of grape berries, with treatments like OSF, TO, and TOSF demonstrating close associations with specific amino acids, suggesting positive correlations. Conclusion Our current results indicate that EOs substantial influence on the metabolic profile of grapes, resulting in enhanced fruit quality and extended shelf life. Variations in sugar, organic acid, and amino acid levels among different EO treatments highlight their potential for improving post-harvest characteristics. To sum up, these findings are valuable for the agricultural and food industries, showcasing the utility of EOs as natural preservatives and enhancers in fruit cultivation and storage. Abstract In the context of global efforts to improve food quality against the backdrop of climate change and increasing demands for food, this study sought to investigate the influence of tillage and fertilization methods on essential nutritional components. Thus, this extensive investigation into the variability of organic acid, sugar, and vitamin content within berries over the years 2020 to 2022 shows the critical influence of agricultural practices on the nutritional quality of grape. Our findings revealed significant fluctuations in the levels of various organic acids, with oxalic and propionic acids seeing a notable increase in 2022, while tartaric, citric, and maleic acids decreased. Similarly, a significant rise in sucrose, glucose, and fructose levels was documented by 2022, alongside a variable trend in vitamin content. The PCA results revealed a clear impact of tillage and organic amendments on the biochemical composition of Royal grapes. Heatmap findings confirmed the results obtained from PCA and showed that certain treatments resulted in high organic acid content, while others resulted in high sugar content. However, disc harrow and olive blackwater 2021 followed by disc harrow and Antep radish 2021 and no‐tillage broccoli 2020 were the best treatments with a balanced distribution of organic acids, soluble sugars, and vitamins among all treatments. On the other hand, chisel and olive blackwater '20 was the treatment with the lowest ratio of organic acids, sugars, and vitamins, followed by chisel and Antep radish 2020. These results show that the concentration of organic acids, soluble sugars, and vitamins in grapes is more affected by the tillage method than the type of organic fertilizer used. To sum up, our study holds valuable implications for viticulture and agriculture at large, highlighting the potential to tailor farming practices for enhanced nutritional outcomes. Such advancements not only promise to elevate the quality of agricultural produce but also contribute to the broader objective of achieving food security and nutritional adequacy, thus offering a roadmap for future research and practice in sustainable agriculture and viticulture.

Abstract Background The integration of organic viticulture practices in grape cultivation represents a pivotal advancement towards sustainable agriculture, emphasizing the importance of environmentally friendly methods that enhance soil health, grape quality, and overall ecosystem biodiversity, thereby contributing significantly to the resilience and long-term sustainability of viticultural ecosystems. This study explored the effects of soil management practices, including chisel, disc harrow, and no tillage, as well as the impact of utilizing Antep radish, broccoli, and olive blackwater as fertilizer applications, on the biochemical composition, specifically biogenic amines (BAs), in the clusters of the 'Royal' grape cultivar within a vineyard setting. Results Throughout the three-year study, no tillage soil management consistently emerged as the most influential soil treatment for enhancing BAs in 'Royal' grape berries, especially in combination with Antep radish and olive blackwater fertilizer applications. Among fertilizer applications, the nontreated control vines consistently had the highest concentrations of critical BAs, such as putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, and dopamine, across different soil management practices. Among the soil management practices and fertilizer applications evaluated, the disc harrow soil management and olive blackwater fertilizer application generally yielded the lowest concentrations of BAs across several metrics.The PCA biplots indicated that experimental years have a similar effect on BA content in grape berries, with specific amines such as serotonin and dopamine being more affected in 2020, while cadaverine, histamine, spermidine, trimethylamine, and norepinephrine were more influenced in 2021, and putrescine, spermine, agmatine, and tryptamine in 2022. Conclusion These findings hold significant implications for organic agriculture, emphasizing the nuanced influence of soil management practices and organic fertilizers on the BA composition of grape berries. Our results indicate the potential of tailored agricultural strategies to enhance plant health and quality, aligning with the principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship inherent to organic farming. Abstract Background The primary challenge in the cut flower industry, specifically in the postharvest phase, is the short vase life of flowers. This issue, along with early leaf yellowing and perianth abscission, significantly diminishes the economic value of flowers due to their accelerated senescence. To tackle this, we conducted a factorial experiment on Alstroemeria cv. Rebecca, utilizing a completely randomized design with three replications. In this experiment the effects of varying concentrations of Salicylic acid (SA) (0, 1.5, and 3 mM) and sucrose (SU) (0% and 3%) were investigated on the postharvest quality of leaves and florets, with systematic evaluations every three days throughout their vase life. Results This experiment revealed that the specific treatment combination of 1.5 mM SA + 3% SU (T5) markedly improved various parameters, such as vase life, total chlorophyll content, membrane stability index, relative fresh weight, and water uptake of cut flowers. In our analysis, we observed that this preservative solution not only extended the vase life and enhanced water uptake but also effectively preserved total chlorophyll, mitigated the loss of fresh weight, and reduced membrane deterioration in petals. Additionally, our results showed an increase in the activities of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) enzymes, as well as total protein content, alongside a decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels. Moreover, this study noted a decrease in microbial populations in solutions containing different concentrations of salicylic acid. Conclusions Our research demonstrated that alstroemeria flowers maintained in a solution with 1.5 mM SA + 3% SU exhibited a significantly prolonged vase life of up to 21 days, in contrast to the 15 days observed in control flowers kept in water. These results are highly beneficial for manufacturers in the cut flower industry, as they provide a viable method to substantially extend the vase life of cut flowers. Such an enhancement in flower longevity can lead to increased market value and customer satisfaction. Furthermore, the reduction in flower senescence and decay rates can contribute to decreased waste and greater efficiency in cut flower distribution and sales, offering a substantial advantage to manufacturers in this competitive market. The extended vase life and reduced senescence observed in alstroemeria flowers treated with 1.5 mM SA and 3% SU are attributed to SA's role in enhancing endogenous defense responses and sucrose's function as an energy source, collectively improving water uptake, and delaying the natural decay process.

Abstract Background Drought and heat stress are significant concerns to food security in arid and semi-arid regions, where global warming is predicted to increase both frequency and severity. To cope with these challenges, the use of drought-tolerant plants or technological interventions are essential. In this study, the effects of foliar potassium nitrate (KNO3) application on the stress tolerance and recovery of Myrobalan 29C rootstocks (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.) were evaluated. These rootstocks are widely recognized for their adaptability and are extensively used in fruit production. To assess their response, the rootstocks were subjected to drought, heat shock, or a combination of both stressors. Additionally, they were treated with 1.0% KNO3 via foliar application. Throughout the stress and recovery periods, various morphological, physiological, and bio-chemical parameters were measured. Results Based on our results, KNO3 treatment improved LRWC, Chl stability, SC, and key stress markers like proline, MDA, H2O2, along with antioxidant enzymes CAT, SOD, POD during both stress and recovery phases. Moreover, our results emphasized KNO3's critical role in hormone regulation under stress. KNO3 application significantly altered hormone levels, notably increasing ABA during drought and heat shock stress, essential for stress response and adaptation. In contrast, IAA, GA, and cytokinin’s significantly increased during the recovery phase in KNO3-treated plants, indicating improved growth regulation and stress recovery. In addition, KNO3 application improved the recovery process of the rootstocks by restoring their physiological and biochemical functions. Conclusion This study suggests that the application of foliar KNO3 is an effective technique for enhancing the drought and heat tolerance as well as the recovery of Myrobalan 29C rootstocks. These results hold significant value for farmers, policymakers, and researchers, as they offer crucial insights into the development of drought-tolerant crops and the management of climate change’s adverse effects on agriculture.

Drought is a major stress that hinders plant growth and causes water stress, posing a significant threat to global food security. While nanotechnology, particularly the use of nanoparticles such as TiO2, offers a promising solution by enhancing plants’ resilience to drought stress, improving nutrient absorption, and promoting growth under adverse conditions, its application in viticulture remains underexplored. The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs; 100, 10, 1, and 0 ppm (control)) on various physiological, biochemical, and morphological parameters in grapevine saplings. Three different rootstock varieties, 41 B/Crimson Seedless (CS), 1103 P/CS, and 5 BB/CS, were included in the experiment to assess how rootstock variety influences the response of grapevine saplings to TiO2-NPs under drought stress (40–50%) and well-irrigated (90–100%) conditions. Young vines grown in pots under greenhouse conditions were used in this study. Applications of 10 ppm TiO2-NPs improved growth parameters and the SPAD index and enhanced stomatal conductance, relative water content, and protein content in grapevine saplings under both drought and well-irrigated conditions. Conversely, oxidative stress parameters, including the membrane damage index, hydrogen peroxide, drought index, and lipid peroxidation levels, were significantly reduced following 10 ppm TiO2-NP applications under drought conditions. Furthermore, total phenolic content, proline content, and ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activities, which increased significantly with drought stress, were reduced to lower levels, paralleling the alleviation of drought-induced oxidative stress. Our results suggest that the primary role of TiO2 nanoparticles in enhancing drought tolerance is due to their beneficial effects in alleviating damage caused by drought stress. This finding applies not only to grapevines but may also be relevant for other agricultural crops.

Abstract Riparian woody plant communities, including shrubs and trees, are essential for maintaining biodiversity, protecting against floods, reducing erosion, and transporting nutrients. However, these habitats are greatly threatened by human activities, particularly agricultural land acquisition, and the introduction of invasive species. This study examined species diversity and interspecific association in riparian woody plant communities along rivers in the Romanian Carpathians. The study focused on communities of Salix purpurea, S. alba, and Hippophaë rhamnoides in mountain regions, with varying sampling efforts at different sites for each species. A total of 174 plant species were found, predominantly herbaceous (77.9%), followed by trees (11.6%) and shrubs (10.5%). While S. alba and S. purpurea communities show high species richness and abundance, S. alba has slightly higher diversity (H′ ≈ 2.23, SD = 0.28) than S. purpurea (H′ ≈ 1.69, SD = 0.42). Contrarily, significant differences exist between H. rhamnoides and S. alba communities in species richness (p = .007) and Shannon diversity (p = .004). PCA analysis elaborated on distinct distribution patterns of plant associations within habitats S. purpurea community, H. rhamnoides community, and S. alba community. Four invasive species (Oenothera biennis L. and Oxalis stricta L. in S. alba communities, Reynoutria sachalinensis Nakai in both S. purpurea and H. rhamnoides communities, and Erigeron canadensis L. in H. rhamnoides communities) were identified, as requiring conservation efforts. Hemicryptophytes dominate species richness, while microphanerophytes and megaphanerophytes significantly contribute to plant abundance. H. rhamnoides formed Hippophaë rhamnoides dunes (2160) Natura 2000 habitat, while S. alba created galleries within the 92A0 Salix alba and Populus alba habitat. In conclusion, the findings from this study highlight the importance of preserving riparian habitats because their value goes beyond local or regional considerations and extends to the global scale due to their unique characteristics.

The dynamic fluctuations in autumn temperatures, particularly the marked diurnal variations and the subsequent precipitous drops are key and a pivotal role in viticulture, as they critically influence the acclimation process of grapevines to cold, thereby directly impacting their survival and productivity in cold-climate regions. In this comprehensive study, we investigated the cold hardiness of four grapevine cultivars: ‘Itasca’, ‘Frontenac’, ‘La Crescent’, and ‘Marquette’, focusing on how these cultivars and their individual buds (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th) respond to fluctuating weather and low temperatures typical of autumn [-1.1°C (30°F) -9.4°C (15°F) and -17.8°C (0°F)]. Our results illuminated the striking variability in cold hardiness that was manifest not only among the different cultivars but also within individual buds on the same vine, underscoring the critical influence of bud position on a vine for cold hardiness. ‘Frontenac’ showed greater cold hardiness at critical temperatures at which 10%, and 50% of the dormant buds were lethally affected by cold (LT10 and LT50) compared to ‘Itasca’ and ‘La Crescent’, with ‘Marquette’ exhibiting intermediate values. However, in cultivars such as ‘Itasca’ and ‘Marquette’, certain buds demonstrated a pronounced hardiness when faced with colder temperatures, while others exhibited a heightened sensitivity, thereby revealing a nuanced interplay between bud position and a vine’s ability to withstand cold stress. Our study revealed a notable divergence from traditional viticulture understanding; apical buds demonstrated greater cold hardiness than basal buds and opened new paths for research into grapevine physiology. Our results also indicated a significant trend wherein older vines across all studied cultivars displayed enhanced cold hardiness, particularly pronounced at the critical LT50 and the critical temperature at which 90% of the dormant buds were lethally affected by cold (LT90) thresholds, in comparison to younger vines. Moreover, our findings shed light on the impact of autumn’s diurnal temperature variations and the subsequent drop in temperatures on vine cold hardiness, thus highlighted the complex interplay between environmental temperature dynamics and dormant bud hardiness. In conclusion, our study showed that the cold damage observed in grapevines in North Dakota was not a result of extreme temperature fluctuations in the fall. This was confirmed by testing the vines after they had reached various threshold temperatures through differential thermal analysis (DTA) and optical differential nucleation and expansion analysis (ODNEAL) methodologies, particularly before the onset of severe pre-winter cold conditions. These comprehensive findings highlighted the complexity of the vine’s response to climatic conditions and viticultural management, pointing to the need for specific strategies in vineyard management and cultivar selection to optimize bud hardiness and productivity in the face of various environmental challenges, especially in cold climate viticulture.

Abstract Background Gray mold, attributed to Botrytis cinerea, poses a substantial threat to food security in fruit-growing regions impacted by global climate change. Addressing this disease requires the utilization of either resilient plant varieties or advanced technological interventions. In this study, the research focused on examining the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by synthetic essential oils, namely thymol, eugenol, 1,8-cineol, and their combination, as potential biological fumigants against B . cinerea on Golden Delicious apples. Results In this study, a total of 53 compounds were identified and categorized into six distinct classes, which included (1) terpenes, (2) esters, (3) C6 compounds, (4) alcohols, (5) acids, and (6) aldehydes. The results we obtained revealed significant variations in the volatile compounds present in apples after harvest when treated with different essential oils to combat B. cinerea. Among the VOCs found in the fruits, the most abundant ones were pentanal, nerol, and ethyl octanoate. The essential oil combination of thymol, eugenol, and 1,8-cineol (Thy + Eug + Fun) had the most significant impact on the volatile compound content in the fruits. Conversely, both B. cinerea and the essential oils were observed to increase the volatile organic compound content in the fruits after harvest. Conclusion The findings from this study underscore the significance of essential oils as effective biological fumigants for countering Botrytis cinerea on apples. Furthermore, the study suggests that these essential oils have the potential to influence the composition of volatile organic compounds in postharvest apples. This research offers valuable insights into the intricate interplay between volatile organic compounds and essential oils in apples, emphasizing the critical role of essential oils in preserving fruit quality during the post-harvest period. Abstract Background Rosa damascena is extensively cultivated in various regions of Iran due to its aesthetic attributes, medicinal qualities, and essential oil production. This study investigated the efficacy of Ascophyllum nodosum extract (AnE) at concentrations of 0, 2, and 3 g L− 1 and Nano-silicon (nSiO2) at concentrations of 0, 50, and 100 mg L− 1 in ameliorating the impact of salinity on two genotypes of Damask rose (‘Chaharfasl’ and ‘Kashan’) under in vitro culture conditions. Additionally, various physio-chemical characteristics of R. damascena explants were assessed. Results The findings revealed that exposure to 100 mM NaCl resulted in a substantial reduction in the Relative Water Content (RWC), Membrane Stability Index (MSI), leaf pigments (Chlorophyll b, Chlorophyll a, total Chlorophyll, and carotenoids), chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and protein content in both genotypes when compared to control conditions. Salinity induced a significant increase in the parameter F0 and a decrease in the parameter Fv/Fm compared to the control conditions in both genotypes. Nonetheless, the genotype Kashan treated with 3 g L− 1 AnE + 100 mg L− 1 nSiO2 exhibited the maximum Fm value under control conditions, with a significant difference compared to other treatments. Furthermore, salinity caused a considerable reduction in Fm in both ‘Kashan’ and ‘Chaharfasl’ by 22% and 17%, respectively, when compared to the control condition. ‘Kashan’ displayed the maximum Fv/Fm compared to the other genotype. The maximum levels of Malondialdehyde (MAD) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were also observed in explants affected by salinity. The combination of 3 g L− 1 AnE + 100 mg L− 1 nSiO2, followed by 2 g L− 1 AnE + 100 mg L− 1 nSiO2, exhibited substantial positive effects. Salinity also led to an increase in proline content and the activity of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), and catalase (CAT) in both genotypes. The activity of these enzymes was further enhanced when AnE was applied at concentrations of 2 and 3 g L− 1 in combination with 100 mg L− 1 nSiO2. Conclusions The ‘Kashan’ genotype displayed greater tolerance to salinity by enhancing water balance, maintaining membrane integrity, and augmenting the activity of antioxidant enzymes compared to ‘Chaharfasl’. The utilization of nSiO2 and AnE biostimulants demonstrated potential benefits for R. damascena, both under salinity and control conditions. These findings hold substantial importance for researchers, policymakers, and farmers, offering valuable insights into the development of salinity-tolerant crop varieties.

Abstract Rosa damascena is one of the most important medicinal and ornamental plants in Iran which is tolerant of salinity to some extent. However, the selection of genotypes that are more tolerant to salinity will influence on Damask cultivation in salt stress-affected regions. For this purpose, a factorial experiment in a completely randomized design with three replicates was performed under in vitro conditions on four Damask rose genotypes (Atashi, Bi-Khar, Chahar-Fasl and Kashan) at 5 concentrations of NaCl (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mM), and the physico-chemical traits were measured 14 and 28 days after treatment.The results showed that Atashi genotype with high levels of Chl a, Chl b, total Chl content, carotenoids, relative leaf water content, proline, total soluble protein, TPC, TFC, TAA, and the highest increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as GPX, APX, CAT, SOD, and POD as well as the lowest amount of hydrogen peroxide showed a better protection mechanism against oxidative damage than the other three genotypes (Bi-Khar, Chahar-Fasl and Kashan) in the 14th and 28th days by maintaining the constructive and induced activities of antioxidant enzymes, it was shown that Bi-Khar genotype had moderate tolerance and Kashan and Chahar-Fasl genotypes had low tolerance to salinity stress. In vitro selection methods can be used effectively for salt tolerant screening of Damask rose genotypes, although the same experiment should be conducted in open filed cultures to verify the in vitro experimental results.

Introduction and Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the coronary arteries in patients undergoing thoracic CT angiography for congenital heart disease, to determine the frequency of detection of coronary artery anomalies in congenital heart diseases, and to determine which type of anomaly is more common in which disease. Materials and Methods: In our investigation, a 128-detector multidetector computed tomography machine was used to perform thorax CT angiography. The acquisition parameters were set to 80–100 kVp based on the patient’s age and mAs that the device automatically determined based on the patient’s weight. During the examination, an intravenous (IV) nonionic contrast material dose of 1–1.5 mL/kg was employed. An automated injector was used to inject contrast material at a rate of 1.5–2 mL/s. In the axial plane, 2.5 mm sections were extracted, and they were rebuilt with 0.625 mm section thickness. Results: Between October 2022 and May 2024, 132 patients who were diagnosed with congenital heart disease by echocardiography and underwent Thorax CT angiography in our department were retrospectively evaluated. Of the evaluated patients, 32 were excluded with exclusion criteria such as patients being younger than 3 months, older than 18 years, insufficient contrast enhancement in imaging and contrast-enhanced imaging, thin vascular structure, and motion and contrast artifacts; the remaining 100 patients were included in this study. The age range of these patients was 3 months to 18 years (mean age 4.4 years). Conclusion: In congenital heart diseases, attention to the coronary arteries on thoracic CT angiography examination in the presence of possible coronary anomalies may provide useful information.

Fritillaria spp., comprising perennial bulbous plants of significant medicinal and ornamental value, face high endangerment in their natural habitats. Despite their importance, the reproductive characteristics and adaptive evolution mechanisms of these species remain incompletely understood. This study focused on the pollination strategies and reproductive biology of Fritillaria imperialis L. The research was conducted at the Erzincan Horticultural Research Institute in Türkiye. Our investigation categorized the flowering process of F. imperialis into nine distinct phases. Through comprehensive assessments of the pollen/ovule ratio, self-incompatibility index (SII), and ex situ pollination experiments, we observed high levels of self-incompatibility and allogamy in F. imperialis. Our findings revealed that pollination of F. imperialis primarily relied on pollen vectors, with Apis mellifera and Bombus terrestris identified as the most effective pollinators. Furthermore, average seed set rate, seed production, and seed viability were quantified at 80.5%, 228 seeds, and 86.3%, respectively. The average numbers of pollen viability and pollen grains were measured at 93% and 702,000, respectively. This comprehensive analysis of the reproductive biology of F. imperialis provides crucial insights for the conservation and genetic management of this highly valuable species. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the reproductive strategies employed by Fritillaria spp., which may inform future conservation efforts and breeding programs for these endangered plants.

Sugars and organic acids not only have a significant impact on taste balance and sensory acceptance by consumers but also play a crucial role in the chemical equilibrium of grape juices and wines. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify the content and composition of sugars and organic acids in 17 grape varieties over two consecutive years using high-performance liquid chromatography. The variability in all the parameters studied was strongly influenced by both the grape cultivars and specific years (p ≤ 0.05). In grape berries, the primary sugars identified were fructose and glucose, which ranged from 6.50 to 11.10 g/L and from 5.83 to 12.12 g/L, respectively, over the two years. However, sucrose was not detected in any of the grape varieties examined. For the two respective years, the highest titratable acidity (TA) was found in Tekirdağ Çekirdeksizi (TeCe) (0.89 and 0.90 g/L), while the lowest was detected in Victoria (Vi) (0.48 and 0.51 g/L). Total soluble solids (TSS) peaked in Horoz Karası (HoKA) (21.90 °Brix), whereas it reached its lowest point in Big Perlon (BiPe) (14.1 °Brix). The tartaric acid content in the grape berries, ranging from 1.48 to 10.33 g/L for the two years, exhibited similar characteristics to malic acid, which ranged from 1.09 to 9.62 g/L and from 1.03 to 9.68 g/L for the two respective years. The succinic, malic, tartaric, citric, and oxalic acid contents were notably higher in the Kyoho (Ky) variety than in the other varieties. When examining the dendrogram of the contents of organic acid and sugar for similarities, it was evident that 16 out of the 17 grape varieties had a high degree of similarity, except for Alphonse Lavallée (AlLa) and HoKa. The similarity levels among the varieties ranged from 99.49% to 72.36%. The highest similarity (99.49%) was observed between the AlLa and Barış (Ba) varieties. The lowest similarity was observed among the AlLa, HoKa, and Ky varieties. In summary, this study underscores that certain table grape varieties grown in Ankara exhibit significant variations in valuable organic acids and sugars, which are associated with potential health benefits when considering human consumption.

Abstract Background Raisins contain a wide range of secondary metabolites, including volatile compounds that may contribute to the health benefits and preference of consumers. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies concerning the analysis of volatile compounds in raisin. The goal of this study was to compare volatile composition of Gök Üzüm (Vitis vinifera L.) raisins produced from grapes dried before the application of two pre-treatments solutions: wood ash (WA) and potassium carbonate (K2CO3). Results Gök Üzüm raisins produced from grapes dipped into the WA solution presented higher contents of most of the studied volatile compounds (including the total contents of C6 compounds, alcohols, benzenoids, esters, aldehydes, terpenes and C13 norisoprenoids) and lower contents of (Z)-2-hexenol and 2-hexenoic acid than the raisins produced from grapes dipped into K2CO solutions. Gök Üzüm raisins were characterized by fruity, floral and grass aromas according to their odor activity values. Drying Gök Üzüm grapes after the treatment of WA solutions promotes a higher aromatic composition compared to K2CO solutions. Conclusion These findings can greatly assist raisin producers in deciding which dipping solution to use before using a dipping solution to dry the grapes. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Conventionally, two 4.5 mm cortical screws inserted toward the posterior tibial cortex are usually advocated for the fixation of Fulkerson osteotomy. This finite element analysis aimed to compare the biomechanical behavior of four different screw configurations to fix the Fulkerson osteotomy. Materials and methods Fulkerson osteotomy was modeled using computerized tomography (CT) data of a patient with patellofemoral instability and fixed with four different screw configurations using two 4.5 mm cortical screws in the axial plane. The configurations were as follows: (1) two screws perpendicular to the osteotomy plane, (2) two screws perpendicular to the posterior cortex of the tibia, (3) the upper screw perpendicular to the osteotomy plane, but the lower screw is perpendicular to the posterior cortex of the tibia, and (4) the reverse position of the screw configuration in the third scenario. Gap formation, sliding, displacement, frictional stress, and deformation of the components were calculated and reported. Results The osteotomy fragment moved superiorly after loading the models with 1654 N patellar tendon traction force. Since the proximal cut is sloped (bevel-cut osteotomy), the osteotomy fragment slid and rested on the upper tibial surface. Afterward, the upper surface of the osteotomy fragment acted as a fulcrum, and the distal part of the fragment began to separate from the tibia while the screws resisted the displacement. The resultant total displacement was 0.319 mm, 0.307 mm, 0.333 mm, and 0.245 mm from the first scenario to the fourth scenario, respectively. The minimum displacement was detected in the fourth scenario (upper screw perpendicular to the osteotomy plane and lower screw perpendicular to the posterior tibial cortex). Maximum frictional stress and maximum pressure between components on both surfaces were highest in the first scenario (both screws perpendicular to the osteotomy plane). Conclusions A divergent screw configuration in which the upper screw is inserted perpendicular to the osteotomy plane and the lower screw is inserted perpendicular to the posterior tibial cortex might be a better option for the fixation of Fulkerson osteotomy. Unraveling the intricate physiological and biochemical intricacies associated with female dominance in grape berries across diverse developmental stages is imperative for optimizing grape production and ensuring the attainment of high-quality yields. This study conducted a thorough analysis of grape berries across phenological stages (BBCH-79, BBCH-81, BBCH-89) and cultivars. At BBCH-89, Bozcaada Çavuşu*Vasilâki demonstrated the highest berry weight and total soluble solids (TSS) levels, emphasizing its enological potential. Acidity peaked at BBCH-79 (28.16) and declined at BBCH-89 (6.11), signaling a shift towards lower acidity in later stages. Bozcaada Çavuşu*Vasilâki consistently showed the highest maturity index (MI). Mineral content variations were observed across nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), boron (B), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu), with Bozcaada Çavuşu*Vasilâki often having the highest concentrations, particularly in potassium, calcium, and boron. Hormonal analysis revealed a significant surge in concentrations at BBCH-89, with Bozcaada Çavuşu*Vasilâki standing out. Notably, Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentrations increased by 106%, and abscisic acid (ABA) levels peaked at BBCH-79 with a 38% increase in Bozcaada Çavuşu*Kuntra. Sugar content analysis showed variations in fructose, glucose, sucrose, rhamnose, xylose, galactose, and arabinose levels across sampling times and cultivars. Bozcaada Çavuşu*Vasilâki consistently exhibited higher sugar levels, especially at BBCH-81 and BBCH-89. Vitamin concentrations varied temporally and among cultivars, with BBCH-89 displaying the highest vitamin A concentration (6.24 mg/100 g FW), and Bozcaada Çavuşu*Vasilâki often exhibiting maximum values for vitamin B1, B2, B6, and C. Further research and targeted cultivation practices focusing on the unique attributes of Bozcaada Çavuşu*Vasilâki could enhance grape production efficiency, emphasizing its potential contribution to achieving consistently high-quality yields across various phenological stages.

Understanding the variations in amino acids, phenolic compounds, elements, and vitamins between grape varieties is essential for optimizing grape production, fine-tuning dietary recommendations, and harnessing the health potential of grapes. In this regard, this comprehensive study investigated the compositional diversity of two distinct table grape cultivars, ‘Bronx Seedless’ and ‘Italia’, at various critical phenological stages (BBCH-77, -79, -81, -83, -85, and -89). The research findings demonstrated remarkable differences in the concentrations of key nutritional components. Bronx Seedless consistently exhibited higher levels of several amino acids, including glutamate, phenylalanine, and aspartate with concentrations reaching 49.6, 52.7, and 24.8 pmol μL−1, respectively, in contrast to Italia. Regarding phenolic compounds, Italia emerged as the richer source, with concentrations notably higher for compounds such as vanillic acid (18.2 µg g−1 FW) and gallic acid (37.4 µg g−1 FW). Mineral analysis revealed variable concentrations, with Italia grapes containing higher levels of Fe (91.0 mg/kg) compared to Bronx Seedless (87.1 mg/kg); however, Bronx Seedless had slightly elevated levels of K (31,089 mg/kg) compared to Italia (28,184 mg/kg). Concidering vitamins, Italia grapes showcased superior levels of Vitamin B1 (14.1 mg/100 g FW) and Vitamin A (11.0 mg/100 g FW), while Bronx Seedless had higher concentrations of Vitamin B6 (29.5 mg/kg), C (3.9 mg/100 g FW) and Vitamin B2 (36.9 mg/100 g FW). Principal component analysis (PCA) elucidated complex relationships within these components, offering insights into potential correlations and interactions. The heatmap visualization further indicated the concentration gradients across various samples, unveiling the intricate nutritional profiles of these grape cultivars. This research can aid grape growers and consumers in making informed decisions about grape cultivars and their corresponding health advantages.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the structural relations between L2 learners’ mindsets, L2 grit and the L2 motivational self-system (L2MSS). The main driving force behind the study is the observation that mindsets have emerged as a significant variable in language-teaching research over the past years. The study was conducted with 403 L2 learners. To see the structural relations between and among the variables in the study, a structural equation model was used. The revised model showed that a growth mindset affects both the perseverance of effort (POE) and the consistency of interest (COI), which are the components that make up grit. Moreover, POE and COI mediate the relationship between the growth mindset and L2MSS, with the highest mediating impact between growth mindset and ideal L2 self. The study discovered that a fixed mindset only predicted ought-to L2 self/others. Finally, several theoretical and pedagogical implications are proposed based on the findings of the study.

Abstract Background Drought stress is a critical environmental factor that disturbs plant performance. However, some non-essential elements such as silicon can improve water deficit tolerance by modulating photosynthesis assimilates and compatible solutes production. Therefore, the present work was conducted to modulate polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced water deficiency under in vitro culture in Damask rose genotypes (Maragheh and Kashan) by nano-silicon (SiO2-NPs) treatment. A completely randomized factorial experiment was used as three concentrations of SiO2-NPs (0, 50, and 100 mg L−1) and five concentrations of PEG (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 g L−1). Then, the comparative effects of water deficiency on vegetative traits, metabolites, and nutrients were studied. Results The drought promoted a significant decrease in chlorophyll, fresh/dry weight, biomass, and an increase in electrolyte leakage. The amount of micro- and macronutrients were affected by drought stress and decreased in both genotypes. In contrast, the activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and total phenolic compounds (TPC) along with biochemical traits was increased. Treatment with SiO2-NPs improved the leaf area index (LAI), chlorophyll, and biomass under severe water deficiency. The concentration of compatible solutes such as carbohydrates, total flavonoid content (TFC), TPC, anthocyanin, and antioxidative capacity enhanced by the application of SiO2-NPs by about twofolded. As well as an increase in PEG concentration, the absorption of nutritional elements such as P, K, Mn, Fe, Zn, and Cu was decreased. However, SiO2-NPs application especially at 100 mg L−1 increased the amount of nutrient absorption. Conclusions In general, the drought tolerance in Damask rose was associated mainly with its suitable manipulation of antioxidant production and orderly enhancement of nutrient adsorption, so that the effect of SiO2-NPs in improving the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of ʻKashanʼ was more than that of ʻMaraghehʼ. These results briefly highlight that the SiO2-NPs may provide greater tolerance to drought stress in Damask rose. Graphical Abstract

Introduction/Objective. Chordomas are rare tumors of a notochordal origin. Wide surgical resection is recommended for treatment. However, it is associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. Additionally, these tumors are resistant to chemotherapy. Thus, targeted therapy is needed for the treatment of chordomas. Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) is a promising target for cancer treatment. Here, we investigated PD-L1 expression in patients with chordoma in a single-center study. Methods. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded blocks were evaluated for immunohistochemical analysis to evaluate PD-L1 expression. Clinicopathological variables, such as sex, age, and follow-up data (recurrence and outcome), were retrospectively collected from the patients’ medical records. Results. Ten patients diagnosed with sacral chordoma in a single institution between December 2015 and November 2021 were included in this study. The median patient age was 57 years and the median follow-up period was 40 months. The surgical margins were negative in all cases, without any preoperative medical treatment. Four of the ten patients showed PD-L1 positivity on immune cells. These patients showed local recurrence, without metastasis. In these cases, the median time to local recurrence was 15 months. All the patients with the disease were alive. Conclusion. This study demonstrated that PD-L1 positivity in immune cells can be used as a predictive marker for local recurrence at the time of surgical treatment. This can potentially be used to determine the necessity to administer immunotherapy.

Abstract Background Chitosan nanoparticles (CTS-NPs) protect the active ingredients from the environment for a specific period and reduces sweating, control weight loss, delay ripening, and increase vase life. So, a factorial experiment was carried out as a randomized complete design in three replications to investigate the efficiency of CTS-NPs in quality improvement and longevity extension of cut rose flowers. Results The 15-day maximum vase life was attained by the rose placed in a preservative solution containing 10 mg L−1 CTS-NPs. CTS-NPs also reduced microbial growth as compared to controls. Total phenolics, total flavonoids, and amount of anthocyanin in treated petals were dramatically increased. CTS-NPs solutions especially at 10 and 15 mg L−1 concentrations, markedly reduced the H2O2 and malondialdehyde at the end of 15th day and maintained the membrane index. The protein and carbohydrate and petals anthocyanin content and enzymatic activities such as superoxide dismutase, polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase increased in cut roses placed in 10 mg L−1 CTS-NPs vase solution which in turn caused to increase in vase life. Conclusion CTS-NPs especially at a level of 10 mg L−1 can assist plants to enhance light usage efficiency, as well as promote photosynthetic carbon fixation and the production of additional carbohydrate products for plant growth and development. Grapes are a globally important fruit with significant economic value, influenced by factors such as sugar content, organic acids, hormones, and antioxidants. Understanding the dynamics of these compounds during grape development and ripening is critical for optimizing berry quality and production. This study investigates the changes in sugar, organic acids, hormones, and antioxidants in two grape varieties, ‘Italia’ and ‘Bronx Seedless’, at various growth stages (BBCH-77, BBCH-79, BBCH-81, BBCH-83, BBCH-85, and BBCH-89). Regarding sugars, significant variations were observed due to grapevine cultivar and phenological stage. ‘Bronx Seedless’ grapes consistently displayed lower sugar content than ‘Italia’ grapes, regardless of the type of sugar being examined. The BBCH-77 stage consistently exhibited lower sugar levels compared to BBCH-89. The varieties ‘Bronx Seedless’ and ‘Italia’ exhibited distinct nutritional profiles, each with their unique advantages in terms of sugar content and organic acid composition. Both varieties were rich in the primary sugar glucose and fructose, with ‘Bronx Seedless’ displaying notably high levels of the beneficial tartaric acid, enhancing its nutritional value. On the other hand, ‘Italia’ stood out for its higher concentrations of fumaric, butyric, and oxalic acids, contributing to its unique taste and health benefits. Throughout their growth stages from BBCH-77 to BBCH-89, an increase in organic acid levels was observed, peaking at the BBCH-85 stage, except for maleic acid. In terms of hormonal content, ‘Italia’ exhibited higher levels compared to ‘Bronx Seedless’. The predominant hormone, abscisic acid (ABA), alongside lower quantities of zeatin, indicated a strong physiological response to environmental and developmental cues in both varieties, with hormone levels increasing as the grapes approached maturity. Antioxidant profiles also varied between the two varieties, with ‘Italia’ consistently showing higher antioxidant levels than ‘Bronx Seedless’. Antioxidant levels consistently increased from BBCH-77 to BBCH-89. This comprehensive analysis contributes to our understanding of the complex processes underlying grape berry development and ripening, with potential implications for enhancing grape quality and refining production strategies.

Traditionally, diagnosis and monitoring of agricultural diseases are carried out through on-site observation and inspection. These methods are time-consuming and may represent limited samples. Therefore, remote sensing technology has become an important tool in disease detection and monitoring in agriculture. In the research, Cercospora leaf spot (Cercospora beticola sacc.) disease, which cause significant economic losses in sugar beet production, were detected in the early stages using machine learning algorithms using non-invasive multispectral images taken with UAV under field conditions is intended to be determined. The research was fulfilled using images from the grower fields in two regions where the disease was observed intensively. Index value data from digital surface model maps created by processing the images taken were used as training and test data. Numerical data was tested using five different supervised machine learning methods. The success of the analyzed models in predicting disease formation from the index values obtained from the images taken and the physiological changes that occur before the disease agents appear on sugar beet leaves was over 70%. Among the models compared in the study, the k-nearest neighbor classifier (KNN) model gave the highest success in both diseases, with 83% accuracy and 76% and 86% f1-score values. The support vector machines model followed the KNN model with 77% accuracy, 75%, and 86% f1-score values. According to the results of the research, it has been revealed that plant diseases have the potential for pre-symptomatic detection, and by processing the images obtained with UAV-based MS images, it is possible to detect diseases in the early period.

Understanding the impact of pre-treatment methods on the phytochemical composition of grapes is essential for optimizing grape quality and producing raisins with desirable characteristics. Therefore, this study meticulously analyzed the impact of two distinct pre-treatment methods, oak ash and potassium carbonate (K2CO3), on the composition of essential phytochemical components in grapes. This research encompassed phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and phytoalexins. This study investigates the impact of pre-treatment methods, oak ash and K2CO3, on the phytochemical composition of grapes. Significant differences were observed in anthocyanins, flavonoids, phytoalexins, and phenolic acids between the treatments. Oak ash exhibited advantages in preserving specific compounds, including higher levels of anthocyanins, flavonols, flavones, flavanones, catechins, resveratrol, pterostilbene, and viniferin, compared to K2CO3. Notably, the delphinidin-3-O-glycoside content was significantly higher in the oak ash treatment. An analysis of phenolic compounds revealed distinctions in hydroxycinnamic acids, hydroxybenzoic acids, benzaldehyde, and phenylacetaldehyde. Additionally, gallic acid, vanillic acid, trans-caffeic acid, trans-p-coumaric acid, and (-)-epicatechin were significantly more prevalent in the K2CO3 treatment, while ferulic acid and quercetin were more prevalent in the oak ash treatment. These findings underscore the pivotal role of pre-treatment methods in shaping the phytochemical content of grapes, thus holding critical implications for grape-derived products’ quality and potential health benefits.

Background: Literature indicates that in academic writing, authors are expected to demonstrate a noticeable stance so that they can make their meaning clear. Therefore, differences between native and non-native writers along with cross-disciplinary academic writing assume great significance. Purpose: The interactional, dialogic, and reflective nature of academic writing requires writers to utilize stance-establishing tools in their writing, the most prominent ones being stance nouns. In addition, the that-clause construction plays a vital role in conveying the author’s stance. Studies that compare L1 Turkish writers of English and L1 English writers regarding academic writing are rather scarce. As such, the present paper aims to analyze L1 Turkish writers of English and L1 English writers in eight disciplines from natural and social sciences in terms of the use of stance nouns in that-clause constructions. Methods: The study employs Jiang and Hyland's (2016) functional classification model in exploring the nominal stance in cross-disciplinary writing of L1 Turkish writers of English and L1 English writers. To this end, journals with high impact in eight disciplines from social and natural sciences were scanned and a total of 320 articles were included in the corpus. The social sciences included in the present study cover applied linguistics, history, psychology, and sociology while the natural sciences cover medicine, engineering, astronomy, and biology. In total, a corpus of 2.232.164 words was formed. Results and Implications: The study found significant differences not only in terms of natural and social sciences but also in terms of L1/L2 distinction. In addition, a secondary purpose of the study was to see whether writers in social and natural sciences differed in terms of empiricist and interpretive rationality. The results indicated that writers in social sciences tended to use more status and cognition nouns, indicating that they tend to be more interpretive. With significant differences between Turkish and English writers from a cross-disciplinary perspective, the present study offers important insights into how writers weave their stance in academic writing. Moreover, the present study also confirmed that writers in social sciences, whether L1 or L2, tend to use more stance nouns compared with writers in natural sciences.

Stridor is a considerable finding, which arises from congenital or acquired causes, that might have a good prognosis or might be a life-threatening cause, and hence requires rapid assessment and intervention. Stridor is mostly considered as croup in pediatric emergency units. A multidisciplinary approach might be required for an accurate diagnosis. The patient's age, time and severity of initial symptoms, response to treatment, and coexistent findings assist in differential diagnosis. Detecting the underlying cause may be difficult and time consuming. In this study, we intended to present cases that we assessed regarding the etiological reasons presented with chronic stridor and to present remarkable characteristics of them in diagnosis and differential diagnosis, by considering the literature. Patients diagnosed with subglottic stenosis, subglottic hemangioma, laryngomalacia and laryngeal web were presented with distinctive history and clinical findings. Patients with intermittent respiratory problems coexisting with stridor can be diagnosed typically through an adequate medical history, a well-enough physical examination, and radiological methods. Flexible endoscopy provides a safe and complete examination of the children's airway.

Introduction/Objectives. Bone and soft tissue infections might mimic bone and soft tissue tumors. Therefore, differential diagnosis is important to prevent errors in treatment. This report aims to present the data of patients with indistinct clinical and radiological findings mimicking benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors, which were later diagnosed as inflammatory infections. Methods. A retrospective chart review of the clinical, microbiological, radiologic, and pathologic findings of patients presented with a presumed diagnosis of a possible malignant lesion was performed. Results. The study included 21 patients with a median age (IQR) of 37 (1 month – 72 years) years, and 13 (61%) patients were men. In total, 16 (76%) patients were admitted to the hospital with complaints of pain. The diagnoses were hydatid cyst, tuberculous osteomyelitis, cat-scratch disease, chronic osteomyelitis, subacute osteomyelitis, and soft tissue abscess. All patients were treated depending on the diagnosis of the lesion. Conclusion. There are chances of misdiagnosis due to shared common characteristics of tumoral and infectious lesions which might be mildly increased inflammatory markers with deeply seated non-mobile soft tissue masses and aggressive periosteal reactions and/or bone destruction patterns. So, each pseudotumoral lesion due to possible infectious causes should be histopathologically examined and correlated with other clinical and laboratory data in order to achieve a final diagnosis

Introduction/Objective. This study aims to evaluate changes in surgical strategy and orthopedic epidemiology, and to compare the frequency of surgeries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. For periods from April 1 to May 31 in years 2019 and 2020, retrospective data on patient demographics and types of orthopedic surgical procedures were obtained from hospital databases in a tertiary referral hospital. Results. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the most common orthopedic surgical procedures performed were trauma surgery (n = 81), while other procedures were referred to oncology (n = 19), biopsy (n = 11), debridement (n = 10), amputation (n = 6), surgery of dysplastic hip (n = 5), and knee ligament repair (n = 1). The majority of trauma cases were hip fracture surgeries (n = 23). The mean age of the patients was 70.5 years. Sixty-three patients were female and 70 were male. Only one patient had a history of COVID-19 infection. In the same period during the year before the pandemic, 86 patients had trauma surgery, while 49 had oncological surgery and the mean patient’s age was 54.5 years. Sixty-two patients in this group were female, and 73 were male. The number of tumor surgeries before the pandemic was higher compared to the same period during the pandemic (p < 0.05). Conclusion. During the pandemic, although all orthopedic surgeries decreased, the rate of osteoporotic hip fractures surgery was similar to that of the pre-pandemic state. This finding emphasizes the increased need to implement preventive measures regarding hip fractures during lockdown periods. The relation of hip and spine osteoporotic fractures surgery was not different before and during the pandemic.

Abstract Background This prospective study aimed to test the reliability and validity of hallux valgus angle (HVA) measurement on smartphone digital photographs compared with the standard radiographic evaluation. Methods Twenty Seven female patients (45 feet) with forefoot deformity were evaluated with weight‐bearing anteroposterior foot radiographs and smartphone photographs. Radiographic hallux valgus angle (rHVA) was measured on digital radiographs. Two different photographic HVA measurement methods were used. In the first, the longitudinal axes of the first metatarsal and proximal phalanx were determined, and the angle between these axes was measured (pHVA), similar to the radiographic method. In the other method, the angle of the margo medialis pedis was measured on the photograph (pMMP). Two independent observers performed all measurements twice on two different occasions. Reliability analysis was performed using the interclass correlation coefficient. Agreement between the measurements was tested using Bland‐Altman analysis. Results The repeated rHVA, pHVA and pMMP measurements showed excellent intra and inter‐observer reliability, with ICC values above 0.900. The mean rHVA, pHVA, and pMMP were statistically similar (p:0.929, 27.03°±8.7°, 27.11°±8.8° and 26.5°±9.0° respectively). The mean difference between the rHVA and pHVA was − 0.07°±5.1° (range, ‐‐9.67 to 9.56°), and the mean difference between the rHVA and pMMP was 0.53°±4.4° (range, ‐9.76° to 8.22°). There was a strong positive correlation between both photographic methods and radiographic measurements (rho = 0.809, p = 0.001 and rho = 0.872, p = 0.001). In the Bland Altman plot, the upper and lower LOAs (95%CI) ranged from − 10.11° to 9.93° for rHVA and pHVA, and from − 8.26° to 9.33° for rHVA and pMMP. Linear regression analysis showed a proportional bias for pHVA but not for the pMMP (p:0.010 versus p:0.633, respectively). The range of the mean difference (prediction interval) between the pMMP and rHVA was 17.59° and 20° for pHVA and rHVA. Abstract Purpose: To investigate changes in meibomian gland morphology and impact of electronic device usage time on meibomian glands in pediatric age group. Methods: In this prospective study, 149 eyes of 149 children were enrolled. The participants also completed the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire and provided information regarding weekly hours spent in front of a digital screen. Meibography was performed in all subjects. Grading of images was evaluated using a previously validated 5-point meiboscale (0–4) for meibomian gland atrophy and a 3-point scale for meibomian gland tortuosity (0–2). Results: Of the 149 enrolled children, 83 (55.7%) were female and 66 (44.3%) male. The mean age was 13.0 ± 3.0 (range, 5–18) years. The mean loss of meibomian gland area was 20.80 ± 9.32%. The mean meiboscore was 1.20 ± 0.58 for gland atrophy and the mean tortuosity score was 0.99 ± 0.62. The mean screen time was 29.32 ± 16.18 hr/week. There was a weak and significantly positive correlation between loss of meibomian gland area and screen time (r = 0.210, P = 0.010). There was a weak and significantly positive correlation between meiboscore for gland atrophy and screen time (r = 0.188, P = 0.022). We found a weak but significantly positive correlation between meibomian gland tortuosity and screen time (r = 0.142, P = 0.033). Conclusion: Meibomian gland morphology may show changes in pediatric age group and excessive screen time may be a factor triggering these changes in gland morphology.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease usually caused by genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, epidermal barrier dysfunction and interaction of environmental factors. Atopic dermatitis is part of atopic march and is often accompanied by food allergy. Aeroallergenic sensitization at early age is not an expected finding. Here, we present five cases with moderate-severe atopic dermatitis during infancy, in whom food allergy was detected and the symptoms improved only partially despite elimination and treatment. Sensitization was investigated in patients with a history of intense exposure to cats by specific IgE and skin prick test in infants with atopic dermatitis who had food allergy and persistant findings. Egg allergy was detected in four of the cases, wheat allergy in one. Cat allergy was present in all. Elimination diet was started in all cases. When exposure to cats was reduced, a marked improvement in the findings of atopic dermatitis was observed in all cases. Allergic diseases are increasing day by day. Unexpected aeroallergenic sensitization is now more common in the early stages of life. Allergic patients, regardless of age, should be questioned in detail for aeroallergen exposure. If it is detected; necessary preventive measures should be taken.

Abstract Background The purpose of this prospective case–control study is to investigate the relationship between quadriceps fat pad syndrome (QFPS) and patellofemoral morphology. Materials and methods Twenty-two patients with QFPS and 22 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers were included. The diagnosis of QFPS was supported both clinically and radiologically. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), patellofemoral morphology was evaluated with 13 radiological measurements including trochlear sulcus angle, trochlear sulcus depth, trochlear facet asymmetry, trochlear condyle asymmetry, lateral trochlear inclination angle, patellar translation, tibial tubercle–trochlear groove (TT–TG) distance, Insall–Salvati ratio, patellotrochlear index, patellar tilt, the ratio between lateral and medial facet lengths, interfacet angle, and quadriceps tendon thickness. The mean of measurements was compared between groups using the Mann–Whitney U test. Results There were 22 patients (12 male, 10 female) with mean age of 30.81 ± 1.41 (range 19–38) years in group I and 22 patients (12 male, 10 female) with mean age of 31.13 ± 1.31 (range 19–39) years in group II. The mean age and the gender distribution were statistically similar between groups (p = 0.845, p = 1, respectively). All measured values except for patellar tilt (p = 0.038) and TT–TG distance (p = 0.004) were similar (p > 0.05 for the other variables). However, all of the measured variables were within the normal range. Conclusions QFPS may not be associated with anatomical variations of the patellofemoral joint. The plum (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh) has been used worldwide both as a genetic source for breeding new rootstocks and as clonal rootstock for many Prunus species. Considering situations where wild relatives of plums are endangered, in-depth characterization of rootstock traits of genetic diversity of plum germplasm of Turkey with many ecogeographical locations is crucial. In the present study, therefore, three steps were followed for the selection of rootstock candidates among the plum germplasm grown in the Middle Euphrates. This region is characterized by an extremely hot climate with extremely warm summers and very low precipitation in summers. Initially, 79 rootstock candidates were selected based on rootstocks traits, and Myrobalan 29C was also used for the control rootstock in all steps. Hardwood cuttings were taken from each rootstock candidate, and after the rooting process in rootstock candidates, 39 rootstock candidates outperforming other candidates were selected according to root characteristics. Based on rooting ability, forty rootstock candidates with the longest root length below 33.50 mm, root number below 3.00, and rooting cutting number below 30.00% were eliminated. The second step of the study focused on the dwarfing characteristics of 39 rootstock candidates, and 13 and Myrobalan 29C out of 39 rootstock candidates’ dwarfing traits showed value higher compared to the other 26 rootstock candidates. Results indicated that the vigor of rootstock candidates was usually found to be strong (26), intermediate (4), and weak (9). Moreover, 13 out of 39 rootstock candidates’ dwarfism trait was better than the other 26 rootstock candidates. In Step 3, some morphological, physiological, and molecular evaluations were conducted in 13 rootstock candidates and the Myrobalan 29C clone, and there were significant differences between both rootstock candidates and the parameters evaluated. PCA has also been indicated that the reference rootstock Myrobalan 29C was grouped with 63B62, 63B69, and 63B14. The highest genetic similarity was found between 63B11 and 63B16, as well as between 63B76 and 63B66, while the lowest genetic similarity was observed between 63B72 and 63B61 candidates. Overall, the findings presented here provide valuable information about the level of rootstock candidates that could potentially be superior among previously uncharacterized plum cultivars in this plum-growing region of Turkey.

Introduction/Objective. Pathologic fractures are devastating complications in metastatic bone disease. Treatment of these condition varies, and includes systemic therapies and surgical interventions. Lack of evidence still exists for standardized care. The aim of this study is to analyze radiological healing response and clinical outcomes after intramedullary nailing (IMN) and adjuvant radiotherapy in complete pathologic fractures of femur or humerus Methods. A total of 19 patients who presented with pathological fracture were retrospectively reviewed. Data regarding demographic characteristics, clinical outcomes and radiologic images were obtained from hospital records. All patients in this cohort were treated with closed, unreamed IMN and adjuvant radiation treatment. Results. Pain relief and full range of motion was obtained in all patients. The mean postoperative Musculoskeletal Tumor Society scores at last follow-up were 69% (range 50–85). All patients demonstrated complete radiographic healing between 2 and 6 months. Only one patient required reoperation for refracture at the tip of the nail which was revised with a longer nail. Conclusion. Our study demonstrated that pathologic fractures managed with closed unreamed IMN and adjuvant multifractional 20 Gy dose radiotherapy yielded good clinical outcomes with complete radiologic response regardless of patient’s life expectancy, adjuvant treatments and overall condition. Closed unreamed IMN was also associated with decreased surgical time in these high-risk patients.

Introduction/Objective. Sciatica is a disabling pathology with variable etiologies. The most common pathologies arise from discogenic or non-discogenic causes. Mass lesions are a rare cause of extraspinal sciatica, which have been commonly overlooked, leading to unnecessary spinal surgeries, delay in diagnosis or inadequate treatment. There is no standard surgical approach and functional outcomes after surgical treatment of these lesions are not well-known. The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes after surgical treatment of mass lesions causing sciatica in different locations. Methods. Data were obtained by a retrospective review from 2015 to 2020. The mean duration of symptoms at the time of surgery was 10.3 months (3–48 months). The mean age of patients at the time of surgery was 43.8 years (14–73 years). The mean follow-up was 19.5 months (4–50 months). In total, 14 cases had an extrapelvic localization distal to sciatic notch. The other three cases had lesions in the intrapelvic area, including left sciatic notch (1), right acetabulum (1), sacroiliac and lumbosacral region (1). None of the patients had palpable masses. Transgluteal, infragluteal, lateral, and posteromedial approach were used depending on location and size of the lesion. Results. At the final follow-up, all patients recovered with pain relief. The median musculoskeletal tumor society score was 90% (70–100). There was no recurrence at the latest follow-up. Conclusion. Our study demonstrated that early detection by neurological examination and radiological work-up can avoid unnecessary surgeries, enable early surgical treatment of tumoral mass with satisfactory clinical outcomes. The surgical approach should be individualized according to location and size of the lesion.
