Aim:Migraine is a common neurovascular inflammatory disease that causes disability and is characterized by recurrent headache attacks. The role of thyroid regulation in migraine is poorly understood, and data are conflicting. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of thyroid hormone levels and migraine types and headache severity.Materials and Methods:One hundred-fifty migraine patients enrolled in this retrospective study. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients, migraine subtypes, frequency and severity, serum thyrothytropine (TSH), and free thyroxin levels were evaluated from records. The Migraine Disability Assessment Questionnaire (MIDAS) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were used to assess the severity of migraine. Data analysis was performed.Results:The mean age was 40.40±10.84 years, and the female to male ratio was 5.1: 1. No significant relationship was found between thyroid hormone levels and headache characteristics of migraine patients and migraine severity (p>0.05). There was no significant relationship between VAS and MIDAS values and TSH levels (p=0.973).Conclusion:Migraine and thyroid diseases are common diseases in the society. Thyroid diseases and thyroid function tests should be evaluated together when determining the characteristics of migraine and the headache severity. Our data suggest that there is no relationship between thyroid hormone levels and migraine subtypes and severity. Further studies are needed in order to confirm this association.

ABSTRACT Background: Impaired dexterity is a frequently reported disability among people with ataxic multiple sclerosis (MS). Objective: To quantify and standardize the evaluation of upper extremity coordination disorder among patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), using the Tablet Ataxia Assessment Program (TAAP). Methods: The X and Y axis movements of 50 MS patients and 30 healthy individuals who were evaluated using the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale (ICARS) were also assessed using TAAP. The functional times of the participants’ right and left hands were recorded using the nine-hole peg test (NHPT). The upper extremity coordination of individuals with MS was evaluated using the upper extremity kinetic functions section of ICARS. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and sleep disorders in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and the association of iron deficiency with them. Materials and methods: The study included 72 patients with RA (59 females, 13 males), and 50 healthy control subjects (57 females, 15 males). Assessments were made using the International RLS Rating Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Beck anxiety and depression index and the SF-36 quality of life scores. Results: We found that the frequency of RLS in RA patients was 29.1% and 13.8% in healthy control (p = 0.021). RA patients had 44.4% iron deficiency and 5.5% anemia of chronic disease. We found that 52.3% of patients with iron deficiency had RLS. There was an independent relationship between present of RLS and FSS (Beta [β] = 0.317, p = 0.005) and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) (β = 0.244, p = 0.031). There was an independent relationship between RLS severity score and PSQI (β = 0.264, p = 0.025) and social functionality (β = 0.302, p = 0.009). Conclusion: The prevalence of iron deficiency is high in RA in the developing countries. Analysis obtained in patients with RA is suggestive of an association between iron deficiency and increased frequency of RLS. The presence of RLS in patients with RA negatively affects sleep quality, psychiatric status, and quality of life of patients with RA. TIBC value may be a predictive marker for early detection of RLS in patients with RA.

ABSTRACT Background: Characterized by demyelination, inflammation and axonal damage, multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common disorders of central nervous system led by the immune system. There is an urgent and obvious need for biomarkers for the diagnosis and follow-up of MS. Objective: To investigate serum levels of sestrin2 (SESN2), a protein that responds to acute stress, in MS patients. Methods: A total of 85 participants, 40 patients diagnosed previously with relapsing-remitting MS and 45 healthy controls, were included. Serum SESN2 parameters were investigated in blood samples drawn from each participant in the patient and control groups. Results: SESN2 levels were significantly lower in MS patients than in controls (z: -3.06; p=0.002). In the ROC analysis of SESN2, the predictive level for MS was 2.36 ng/mL [sensitivity, 72.50%; specificity, 55.56%; p=0.002; area under the curve (AUC)=0.693]. For the cut-off value in both groups, SESN2 was an independent predictor for MS [Exp (B)=3.977, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 1.507-10.494 and p=0.013]. Conclusions: The decreased expression of SESN2 may play a role in MS pathogenesis, and SESN2 could be used as a biomarker for MS and as immunotherapeutic agent to treat MS.

Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is defined as a sudden malfunction in the ability of respiratory system to maintain adequate gas exchange. Acute hypercapnic respiratory failure develops as a result of ventilation deficiency and it is defined as an increase of PaCO2 above 45 mmHg. Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a sporadically developing auto-immune deficiency where the neuro-muscular transmission is affected and it is one of the important reasons for neurologically-induced respiratory distress. Here, we report a case of a 75-year-old male patient previously undiagnosed MG, who presented with ARF. MG is not a common entity that we encounter daily. Patients on occasions may present to the emergency department because of acute exacerbation. Though most of them were known cases, we should be aware of some unrecognized cases and should consider MG as a differential diagnosis for patients with acute respiratory failure.
