Biosurfactants have garnered increased attention lately due to their superiority of their properties over fossil-derived counterparts. While the cost of production remains a significant hurdle to surpass synthetic surfactants, biosurfactants have been anticipated to gain a larger market share in the coming decades. Among these, glycolipids, a type of low-molecular-weight biosurfactant, stand out for their efficacy in reducing surface and interfacial tension, which made them highly sought-after for various surfactant-related applications. Glycolipids are composed of hydrophilic carbohydrate moieties linked to hydrophobic fatty acid chains through ester bonds that mainly include rhamnolipids, trehalose lipids, sophorolipids, and mannosylerythritol lipids. This review highlights the current landscape of glycolipids and covers specific glycolipid productivity and the diverse range of products found in the global market. Applications such as bioremediation, food processing, petroleum refining, biomedical uses, and increasing agriculture output have been discussed. Additionally, the latest advancements in production cost reduction for glycolipid and the challenges of utilizing second-generation feedstocks for sustainable production are also thoroughly examined. Overall, this review proposes a balance between environmental advantages, economic viability, and societal benefits through the optimized integration of secondary feedstocks in biosurfactant production.

Qilou (arcade building) is a particular type of Chinese historical architecture combined with western and eastern building elements, which plays a significant role in the history of modern Chinese architecture. However, the recognition and classification of the qilou mainly rely on manual inspection, suppressing the cultural dissemination and protection of qilou relics. In this paper, we present a new framework that adopts multiple image processing algorithms and a deep learning network to automate qilou classification. First, image dataset of the qilou is enhanced based on the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) algorithm. Then, an improved Faster R-CNN with ResNet50 (Faster R-CNN-R) is deployed for qilou image recognition. A total of 760 images captured in Guangzhou were used for training, validation, and accuracy check of the proposed framework and several contrastive networks under the same conditions. Compared to other networks, the proposed framework works better than Faster R-CNN with VGG16 (Faster R-CNN-V) and FCOS. The accuracy of the proposed framework embedded with the Faster R-CNN-R, Faster R-CNN-V, and FCOS are 80.12%, 65.17%, and 66.35%, respectively. Based on digital images captured under different lighting conditions, the proposed framework can be used to classify nine different types of qilous, with high robustness.

Abstract A computational search for stable structures among both α and β phases of ternary ATB4 borides (A = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Al, Ga, and Zn, T is 3d or 4d transition elements) has been performed. We found that α-ATB4 compounds with A = Mg, Ca, Al, and T = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Co form a family of structurally stable or almost stable materials. These systems are metallic in non-magnetic states and characterized by the formation of the localized molecular-like state of 3d transition metal atom dimers, which leads to the appearance of numerous Van Hove singularities in the electronic spectrum. The closeness of such singularities to the Fermi level can be easily tuned by electron doping. For the atoms in the middle of the 3d row (Cr, Mn, and Fe), these singularities led to magnetic instabilities and magnetic ground states with a weakly metallic or semiconducting nature. Such states appear as non-trivial coexistence of the different spin ladders formed by magnetic dimers of 3d elements. These magnetic states can be characterized as an analog of the spin glass state. Experimental attempts to produce MgFeB4 and associated challenges are discussed, and promising directions for further synthetic studies are formulated.

Abstract Laser-driven coherent phonons can act as modulated strain fields and modify the adiabatic ground state topology of quantum materials. Here we use time-dependent first-principles and effective model calculations to simulate the effect of the coherent phonon induced by strong terahertz electric field on electronic carriers in the topological insulator ZrTe5. We show that a coherent A 1g Raman mode modulation can effectively pump carriers across the band gap, even though the phonon energy is about an order of magnitude smaller than the equilibrium band gap. We reveal the microscopic mechanism of this effect which occurs via Landau–Zener-Stückelberg tunneling of Bloch electrons in a narrow region in the Brillouin zone center where the transient energy gap closes when the system switches from strong to weak topological insulator. The quantum dynamics simulation results are in excellent agreement with recent pump-probe experiments in ZrTe5 at low temperature.

Background and objective: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) requires extended treatment with regimens with multiple side effects, resulting in high treatment failure rates. Adjunctive lung resection combined with anti-tubercular agents improves outcomes. However, few studies have evaluated the potential harm from surgery and determined the optimal conditions for surgery. We aimed to analyze perioperative conditions to assess risk factors for postoperative complications in a multi-institutional setting. Methods: This retrospective study included 44 patients with MDR-TB who underwent adjunctive lung resection at three management groups of the Taiwan MDR-TB consortium between January 2007 and December 2020. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, radiological findings, sputum culture status before surgery, primary or acquired drug resistance, surgical procedure, complications, and treatment outcomes were collected and analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify risk factors for postoperative complications. Results: Twenty-seven patients (61.4%) underwent lung resection using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). The overall surgical complication rate was 20.5%, and the surgical mortality rate was 9.1%. Postsurgical hemothorax was the most common complication (11.4%). According to the univariate analysis, hilum involvement in images, positive preoperative sputum culture, and thoracotomy approach were unfavorable factors. VATS approach [adjusted OR, 0.088 (95% CI, 0.008–0.999)] was the only favorable factor identified by multivariate analysis. Conclusion: The minimally invasive approach is a growing trend, and lobectomies and sublobar resections were the main procedures for MDR-TB. The VATS approach significantly reduced the surgical complication rate. Postsurgical hemothorax was noteworthy, and meticulous hemostasis of the chest wall and residual lung surface is critical for successful resections.

Abstract Background Crosstalk between the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) signaling is called the “AhR–Nrf2 gene battery”, which works synergistically in detoxification to support cell survival. Nrf2-dependent phase II gene promoters are controlled by coordinated recruitment of the AhR to adjacent dioxin responsive element (DRE) and Nrf2 recruitment to the antioxidative response element (ARE). The molecular interaction between AhR and Nrf2 members, and the regulation of each target, including phase I and II gene complexes, and their mediators are poorly understood. Methods Knockdown and forced expression of AhR–Nrf2 battery members were used to examine the molecular interactions between the AhR–Nrf2 axis and AhR promoter activation. Sequential immunoprecipitation, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and histology were used to identify each protein complex recruited to their respective cis-elements in the AhR promoter. Actin fiber distribution, cell spreading, and invasion were examined to identify functional differences in the AhR–Jdp2 axis between wild-type and Jdp2 knockout cells. The possible tumorigenic role of Jdp2 in the AhR–Nrf2 axis was examined in mutant Kras-Trp53-driven pancreatic tumors. Results Crosstalk between AhR and Nrf2 was evident at the transcriptional level. The AhR promoter was activated by phase I ligands such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) through the AhR–Jdp2–Nrf2 axis in a time- and spatial transcription-dependent manner. Jdp2 was a bifunctional activator of DRE- and ARE-mediated transcription in response to TCDD. After TCDD exposure, Jdp2 activated the AhR promoter at the DRE and then moved to the ARE where it activated the promoter to increase reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated functions such as cell spreading and invasion in normal cells, and cancer regression in mutant Kras-Trp53-driven pancreatic tumor cells. Conclusions Jdp2 plays a critical role in AhR promoter activation through the AhR–Jdp2–Nrf2 axis in a spatiotemporal manner. The AhR functions to maintain ROS balance and cell spreading, invasion, and cancer regression in a mouse model of mutant Kras–Trp53 pancreatic cancer. These findings provide new insights into the roles of Jdp2 in the homeostatic regulation of oxidative stress and in the antioxidation response in detoxification, inflammation, and cancer progression.

Abstract Herein, this work aims to develop a facile method for the fabrication of metallic mechanical metamaterial with a well-ordered diamond structure from a bottom-up approach using a self-assembled block copolymer for templated electrochemical deposition. By controlling the effective volume fraction of PDMS in PS-b-PDMS via solvent annealing followed by HF etching of PDMS, it is feasible to obtain nanoporous PS with diamond-structured nanochannels and used it as a template for templated electrochemical deposition. Subsequently, well-ordered nanonetwork gold (Au) can be fabricated. As evidenced by nanoindentation and micro-compression tests, the mechanical properties of the diamond-structured Au after removal of PS give the combination of lightweight and mechanically robust characteristics with an exceptionally high reduced elastic modulus of 11.9 ± 0.6 GPa and yield strength of 193 ± 11 MPa above the Hashin-Shtrikman upper bound of 72 MPa with a bending-dominated structure at equivalent density. The corresponding deformation mechanism can be elucidated by morphological observations experimentally and finite element analysis (FEA) numerically. This work demonstrates the bottom-up approach to fabricating metallic monolith with diamond structure in the nanoscale, giving a superior performance as mechanical metamaterials.

We demonstrate the successful synthesis of linear and non-linear star block copolymers consisting of the highly segregated polystyrene (PS) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) blocks through sequential anionic polymerization combined with chlorosilane chemistry. To study the macromolecular architecture effect on the adopted morphology star block copolymers with six equivalent diblock arms [(PS-b-PDMS)6] were synthesized and compared with their linear diblock copolymer precursors as well as with the corresponding star block copolymers with smaller arm number (2, 3, 4) but identical molecular characteristics. After verifying the molecular and thermal characteristics, bulk studies were carried out through transmission electron microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering. Well-defined structures with enhanced order and similar domain spacing values, irrespective of the architecture complexity of the samples, were observed. The better order of star block copolymers suggests an alternative way to further reduce the lower limit of repeating period by tuning the architecture which is important for the potential future use of the copolymers for nanotechnology related applications. The findings of the specific study are related to the effects of the increased conformational restriction of the inner block. Herein, we show morphological transformations in the (PS-b-PDMS)6 copolymers having non symmetric volume fraction ratios when compared to their linear diblock precursors and triblock copolymers which has not been observed in previous relevant (PS-b-PDMS)n studies that involved stars with less than six arms. To establish the structure/property relationship as a function of arm number, a series of samples involving the diblock precursor, the triblock, the three-, four- and six- arm star block copolymers was prepared, and a systematic comparison was conducted.

ABSTRACTIn preclinical studies, a new antituberculosis drug regimen markedly reduced the time required to achieve relapse-free cure. This study aimed to preliminarily evaluate the efficacy and safety of this four-month regimen, consisting of clofazimine, prothionamide, pyrazinamide and ethambutol, with a standard six-month regimen in patients with drug-susceptible tuberculosis. An open-label pilot randomized clinical trial was conducted among the patients with newly diagnosed bacteriologically-confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis. The primary efficacy end-point was sputum culture negative conversion. Totally, 93 patients were included in the modified intention-to-treat population. The rates of sputum culture conversion were 65.2% (30/46) and 87.2% (41/47) for short-course and standard regimen group, respectively. There was no difference on two-month culture conversion rates, time to culture conversion, nor early bactericidal activity (P > 0.05). However, patients on short-course regimen were observed with lower rates of radiological improvement or recovery and sustained treatment success, which was mainly attributed to higher percent of patients permanently changed assigned regimen (32.1% vs. 12.3%, P = 0.012). The main cause for it was drug-induced hepatitis (16/17). Although lowering the dose of prothionamide was approved, the alternative option of changing assigned regimen was chosen in this study. While in per-protocol population, sputum culture conversion rates were 87.0% (20/23) and 94.4% (34/36) for the respective groups. Overall, the short-course regimen appeared to have inferior efficacy and higher incidence of hepatitis but desired efficacy in per-protocol population. It provides the first proof-of-concept in humans of the capacity of the short-course approach to identify drug regimens that can shorten the treatment time for tuberculosis.

Abstract Bioinspired from structural coloration of butterfly wing structure, this work aims to fabricate nanoporous chitosan for UVC reflection. By taking advantage of self-assembled polystyrene-b-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) with double gyroid texture followed by hydrofluoric acid etching of PDMS block, nanoporous PS with well-defined nanochannels can be fabricated, and used as a template for templated crosslinking reaction of chitosan through a multiple pore-filling process. Well-ordered nanoporous chitosan with shifting networks in nanoscale can be successfully fabricated after removal of the PS template. With the low absorption of chitosan in the ultraviolet region and the shifting networks for opening the bandgap, it is appealing to exploit the nanonetwork chitosan as high reflective materials for UVC optical devices, as evidenced by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation and optical measurements experimentally.

Abstract We study the time-dependence of Hawking radiation for a black hole in the Unruh vacuum, and find that it is not robust against certain UV and IR effects. If there is a UV cutoff at the Planck scale, Hawking radiation is turned off after the scrambling time. In the absence of a UV cutoff, Hawking radiation is sensitive to the IR cutoff through a UV/IR connection due to higher-derivative interactions in the effective theory. Furthermore, higher-derivative interactions with the background contribute to a large amplitude of particle creation that changes Hawking radiation. This unexpected large effect is related to a peculiar feature of the Hawking particle wave packets.

Abstract This paper aims to probe the influence of innovation spillovers in the artificial intelligence (AI) and financial technology (Fin-tech) industries on the value of the internet of things (IoT) companies. Python was utilized to download public information from Yahoo Finance, and then the GARCH model was used to extract the fluctuations of cross-industry innovation spillovers. Next, the Fama–French three-factor model was used to explore the interactive changes between variables. The panel data regression analysis indicates that the more firms accept innovation spillovers from other industries, the better the excess return; however, this effect differs because of industrial attributes and the environmental changes induced by COVID-19. Additionally, this study finds that investing in large-cap growth stocks of IoT firms is more likely to yield excess returns. Finally, the study yields lessons for policy leverage to accelerate the upgrading and transformation of innovation-interactive industries by referring to the practices of Singapore and South Korea.

Abstract Ternary compounds with an immiscible pair of elements are relatively unexplored but promising for novel quantum materials discovery. Exploring what third element and its ratio that can be added to make stable ternary compounds out of an immiscible pair of elements remains a great challenge. In this work, we combine a machine learning (ML) method with ab initio calculations to efficiently search for the energetically favorable ternary La-Co-Pb compounds containing immiscible elements Co and Pb. Three previously reported structures are correctly captured by our approach. Moreover, we predict a ground state La3CoPb compound and 57 low-energy La-Co-Pb ternary compounds. Attempts to synthesize La3CoPb via multiple techniques produce mixed or multi-phases samples with, at best, ambiguous signals of the predicted lowest-energy La3CoPb and the second lowest-energy La18Co28Pb3 phases. The calculated results of Gibbs free energy are consistent with experiments, and will provide very useful guidance for further experimental synthesis.

IntroductionThe psychological health of healthcare workers (HCWs) has become a significant concern, particularly during the initial stage of a pandemic. This study compared the depressive symptoms among HCWs in high-risk areas (HRAs) and low-risk areas (LRAs) with matching demographics.MethodsA cross-sectional study was employed to compare the depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire score ≥ 10), workplace environment characteristics, the Health Belief Model (HBM) and socio-demographics of the HCWs working in HRAs and LRAs in several accessible regions (mainly Hubei Province and Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater–Bay–Area) in China. Eight hundred eighty-five HCWs were recruited for unmatched analysis between March 6 and April 2, 2020. After matching with occupation and years of service using a 1:2 ratio, 146 HCWs in HRAs and 290 HCWs in LRAs were selected for matched analysis. Abstract Background Preoperative risk stratification is used to derive an optimal treatment plan for patients requiring cancer surgery. Patients with reversible risk factors are candidates for prehabilitation programmes. This pilot study explores the impact of preoperative covariates of comorbid disease (Charlson Co-morbidity Index), preoperative serum biomarkers, and traditional cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)-derived parameters of functional capacity on postoperative outcomes after major colorectal cancer surgery. Methods Consecutive patients who underwent CPET prior to colorectal cancer surgery over a 2-year period were identified and a minimum of 2-year postoperative follow-up was performed. Postoperative assessment included: Clavien-Dindo complication score, Comprehensive Complication Index, Days at Home within 90 days (DAH-90) after surgery, and overall survival. Results The Charlson Co-morbidity Index did not discriminate postoperative complications, or overall survival. In contrast, low preoperative haemoglobin, low albumin, or high neutrophil count were associated with postoperative complications and reduced overall survival. CPET-derived parameters predictive of postoperative complications, DAH-90, and reduced overall survival included measures of VCO2 kinetics at anaerobic threshold (AT), peakVO2 (corrected to body surface area), and VO2 kinetics during the post-exercise recovery phase. Inflammatory parameters and CO2 kinetics added significant predictive value to peakVO2 within bi-variable models for postoperative complications and overall survival (P < 0.0001). Conclusion Consideration of modifiable ‘triple low’ preoperative risk (anaemia, malnutrition, deconditioning) factors and inflammation will improve surgical risk prediction and guide prehabilitation. Gas exchange parameters that focus on VCO2 kinetics at AT and correcting peakVO2 to body surface area (rather than absolute weight) may improve CPET-derived preoperative risk assessment.

With the increasing incidence and mortality of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide, revealing innovative targets to improve therapeutic strategies is crucial for prolonging the lives of patients. To identify innovative targets, we conducted a comprehensive comparative transcriptome analysis of 5,410 human HCCs and 974 mouse liver cancers to identify concordantly expressed genes associated with patient survival. Among the 664 identified prognostic comparative HCC (pcHCC) genes, upregulated pcHCC genes were associated with prognostic clinical features, including large tumor size, vascular invasion and late HCC stages. Interestingly, after validating HCC patient prognoses in multiple independent datasets, we matched the 664 aberrant pcHCC genes with the sorafenib-altered genes in TCGA_LIHC patients and found these 664 pcHCC genes were enriched in sorafenib-related functions, such as downregulated xenobiotic and lipid metabolism and upregulated cell proliferation. Therapeutic agents targeting aberrant pcHCC genes presented divergent molecular mechanisms, including suppression of sorafenib-unrelated oncogenic pathways, induction of sorafenib-unrelated ferroptosis, and modulation of sorafenib transportation and metabolism, to potentiate sorafenib therapeutic effects in HCC combination therapy. Moreover, the pcHCC genes NCAPG and CENPW, which have not been targeted in combination with sorafenib treatment, were knocked down and combined with sorafenib treatment, which reduced HCC cell viability based on disruption to the p38/STAT3 axis, thereby hypersensitizing HCC cells. Together, our results provide important resources and reveal that 664 pcHCC genes represent innovative targets suitable for developing therapeutic strategies in combination with sorafenib based on the divergent synergistic mechanisms for HCC tumor suppression.

Abstract In the background of a gravitational collapse, we compute the transition amplitudes for the creation of particles for distant observers due to higher-derivative interactions in addition to Hawking radiation. The amplitudes grow exponentially with time and become of order 1 when the collapsing matter is about a Planck length outside the horizon. As a result, the effective theory breaks down at the scrambling time, invalidating its prediction of Hawking radiation. Planckian physics comes into play to decide the fate of black-hole evaporation.

How to rapidly disseminate a large-sized file to many recipients in flash crowd arrival patterns is a fundamental challenge in many applications, such as distributing multimedia content. To tackle this challenge, we present the Bee, which is a time-critical peer-to-peer data dissemination system aiming at minimizing the maximum dissemination time for all peers to obtain the complete file in flash crowd arrival patterns. Bee is a decentralized system that organizes peers into a randomized mesh-based overlay, and each peer only works with local knowledge. We introduce the slowest peer first strategy to boost the speed of dissemination and present a topology adaptation algorithm that adapts the number of connections based on upload bandwidth capacity of a peer. Bee is designed to support network heterogeneity and deals with the flash crowd arrival pattern without sacrificing the dissemination speed. We also show the lower bound analysis of the data dissemination problem, and present the experimental results to demonstrate that the performance of Bee can roughly approximate the lower bound of the data dissemination problem under flash crowd traffic.

Microsatellite-instability-high (MSI-H) cancers form a spectrum of solid organ tumors collectively known as Lynch Syndrome cancers, occurring not only in a subset of colorectal, endometrial, small bowel, gastric, pancreatic, and biliary tract cancers but also in prostate, breast, bladder, and thyroid cancers. Patients with Lynch Syndrome harbor germline mutations in mismatch repair genes, with a high degree of genomic instability, leading to somatic hypermutations and, therefore, oncogenesis and cancer progression. MSI-H cancers have unique clinicopathological characteristics compared to their microsatellite-stable (MSS) counterparts, marked by a higher neoantigen load, immune cell infiltration, and a marked clinical response to immune checkpoint blockade. Patients with known Lynch Syndrome may be detected early through surveillance, but some patients present with disseminated metastatic disease. The treatment landscape of MSI-H cancers, especially colorectal cancers, has undergone a paradigm shift and remains to be defined, with immune checkpoint blockade coming to the forefront of treatment strategies in the stage IV setting. We summarize in this review the clinical features of MSI-H cancers with a specific interest in the pattern of spread or recurrence, disease trajectory, and treatment strategies. We also summarize the tumor-immune landscape and genomic profile of MSI-H cancers and potential novel therapeutic strategies.

DASH is a popular technology for video streaming over the Internet. However, the quality of experience (QoE), a measure of humans’ perceived satisfaction of the quality of these streamed videos, is their subjective opinion, which is difficult to evaluate. Previous studies only considered network-based indices and focused on them to provide smooth video playback instead of improving the true QoE experienced by humans. In this study, we designed a series of click density experiments to verify whether different resolutions could affect the QoE for different video scenes. We observed that, in a single video segment, different scenes with the same resolution could affect the viewer’s QoE differently. It is true that the user’s satisfaction as a result of watching high-resolution video segments is always greater than that when watching low-resolution video segments of the same scenes. However, the most important observation is that low-resolution video segments yield higher viewing QoE gain in slow motion scenes than in fast motion scenes. Thus, the inclusion of more high-resolution segments in the fast motion scenes and more low-resolution segments in the slow motion scenes would be expected to maximize the user’s viewing QoE. In this study, to evaluate the user’s true experience, we convert the viewing QoE into a satisfaction quality score, termed the Q-score, for scenes with different resolutions in each video segment. Additionally, we developed an optimal segment assignment (OSA) algorithm for Q-score optimization in environments characterized by a constrained network bandwidth. Our experimental results show that application of the OSA algorithm to the playback schedule significantly improved users’ viewing satisfaction.

Abstract Background Fluid resuscitation is frequently required for cardiac surgical patients admitted to the intensive care unit. The ideal fluid of choice in regard to efficacy and safety remains uncertain. Compared with crystalloid fluid, colloid fluid may result in less positive fluid balance. However, some synthetic colloids are associated with increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI). This study compared the effects of succinylated gelatin (4%) (GEL) with compound sodium lactate (CSL) on urinary AKI biomarkers in patients after cardiac surgery. Methods Cardiac surgical patients who required an intravenous fluid bolus of at least 500 mL postoperatively were randomly allocated to receive GEL or CSL as the resuscitation fluid of choice for the subsequent 24 h. Primary outcomes were serial urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and cystatin C concentrations measured at baseline, 1 h, 5 h and 24 h after enrolment, with higher concentrations indicating greater kidney injury. Secondary biomarker outcomes included urinary clusterin, α1-microglobulin and F2-isoprostanes concentrations. Secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, growth hormone (GH) is a peptide that plays a critical role in regulating cell growth, development, and metabolism in multiple targeted tissues. Studies have shown that GH and its functional receptor are also expressed in the female reproductive system, including the ovaries and uterus. The experimental data suggest putative roles for GH and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1, induced by GH activity) signaling in the direct control of multiple reproductive functions, including activation of primordial follicles, folliculogenesis, ovarian steroidogenesis, oocyte maturation, and embryo implantation. In addition, GH enhances granulosa cell responsiveness to gonadotropin by upregulating the expression of gonadotropin receptors (follicle-stimulating hormone receptor and luteinizing hormone receptor), indicating crosstalk between this ovarian regulator and the endocrine signaling system. Notably, natural gene mutation of GH and the age-related decline in GH levels may have a detrimental effect on female reproductive function, leading to several reproductive pathologies, such as diminished ovarian reserve, poor ovarian response during assisted reproductive technology (ART), and implantation failure. Association studies using clinical samples showed that mature GH peptide is present in human follicular fluid, and the concentration of GH in this fluid is positively correlated with oocyte quality and the subsequent embryo morphology and cleavage rate. Furthermore, the results obtained from animal experiments and human samples indicate that supplementation with GH in the in vitro culture system increases steroid hormone production, prevents cell apoptosis, and enhances oocyte maturation and embryo quality. The uterine endometrium is another GH target site, as GH promotes endometrial receptivity and pregnancy by facilitating the implantation process, and the targeted depletion of GH receptors in mice results in fewer uterine implantation sites. Although still controversial, the administration of GH during ovarian stimulation alleviates age-related decreases in ART efficiency, including the number of oocytes retrieved, fertilization rate, embryo quality, implantation rate, pregnancy rate, and live birth rate, especially in patients with poor ovarian response and recurrent implantation failure.

BackgroundAccidental injuries are the leading cause of deaths and disabilities in children globally and most of them occur at home. To save life and prevent sequelae, domestic helpers (DHs) require providing emergency management (i.e., first aid) to children involved in home accidents. However, their self-efficacy in emergency management for children is rarely investigated. Hence, this study aimed to tap that research gap.MethodsThis study adopted a cross-sectional descriptive survey design. A convenience sample of 385 DHs was obtained in Hong Kong. DHs' self-efficacy in emergency management for children involved in home accidents was measured using a 12-item well-validated survey instrument “Self-Efficacy of First Aid in Unintentional Injury at Home”. The total score ranged from 0 to 48. A higher score indicates greater confidence in emergency management for children involved in home accidents.ResultsAll the participants were women and most of them were aged between 31 and 35 years (N = 103, 26.8%). The mean score for DHs' self-efficacy in emergency management was 29.0 (SD 10.1). The three items with the lowest self-efficacy were managing bone fractures, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and providing artificial respiration. Bivariate analysis showed that DHs' self-efficacy was significantly related to their educational level, first aid training, caring experience, and working experience. Abstract Background The cerebellum is the sensitive region of the brain to developmental abnormalities related to the effects of oxidative stresses. Abnormal cerebellar lobe formation, found in Jun dimerization protein 2 (Jdp2)-knockout (KO) mice, is related to increased antioxidant formation and a reduction in apoptotic cell death in granule cell progenitors (GCPs). Here, we aim that Jdp2 plays a critical role of cerebellar development which is affected by the ROS regulation and redox control. Objective Jdp2-promoter-Cre transgenic mouse displayed a positive signal in the cerebellum, especially within granule cells. Jdp2-KO mice exhibited impaired development of the cerebellum compared with wild-type (WT) mice. The antioxidation controlled gene, such as cystine-glutamate transporter Slc7a11, might be critical to regulate the redox homeostasis and the development of the cerebellum. Methods We generated the Jdp2-promoter-Cre mice and Jdp2-KO mice to examine the levels of Slc7a11, ROS levels and the expressions of antioxidation related genes were examined in the mouse cerebellum using the immunohistochemistry. Results The cerebellum of Jdp2-KO mice displayed expression of the cystine-glutamate transporter Slc7a11, within the internal granule layer at postnatal day 6; in contrast, the WT cerebellum mainly displayed Sla7a11 expression in the external granule layer. Moreover, development of the cerebellar lobes in Jdp2-KO mice was altered compared with WT mice. Expression of Slc7a11, Nrf2, and p21Cip1 was higher in the cerebellum of Jdp2-KO mice than in WT mice. Conclusion Jdp2 is a critical regulator of Slc7a11 transporter during the antioxidation response, which might control the growth, apoptosis, and differentiation of GCPs in the cerebellar lobes. These observations are consistent with our previous study in vitro.

Abstract Residual intra-peritoneal gas may be associated with post-laparoscopic shoulder pain (PLSP), which is a frequently and disturbance compliant after surgery. Herein, we aimed to examine whether expiring residual gas via a surgical drain reduces the frequency and intensity of PLSP in the first day after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. 448 participants were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. The incidence and severity of PLSP after surgery were recorded. Of these, the cumulative incidence of PLSP in the drain group was lower particularly at the 12th postoperative hour (18.3% vs. 27.6%; P = 0.022), 24th postoperative hour (28.8% vs. 38.1%; P = 0.039), and throughout the first postoperative day (P = 0.035). The drain group had less severe PLSP (crude Odds ratio, 0.66; P = .036). BackgroundAcute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) elicits a robust cardiomyocyte death and inflammatory responses despite timely revascularization.ObjectivesThis phase 1, open-label, single-arm, first-in-human study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of combined intracoronary (IC) and intravenous (IV) transplantation of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UMSC01) for heart repair in STEMI patients with impaired left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF 30-49%) following successful reperfusion by percutaneous coronary intervention.MethodsConsenting patients received the first dose of UMSC01 through IC injection 4-5 days after STEMI followed by the second dose of UMSC01 via IV infusion 2 days later. The primary endpoint was occurrence of any treatment-related adverse events and the secondary endpoint was changes of serum biomarkers and heart function by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging during a 12-month follow-up period.ResultsEight patients gave informed consents, of whom six completed the study. None of the subjects experienced treatment-related serious adverse events or major adverse cardiovascular events during IC or IV infusion of UMSC01 and during the follow-up period. The NT-proBNP level decreased (1362 ± 1801 vs. 109 ± 115 pg/mL, p = 0.0313), the LVEF increased (52.67 ± 12.75% vs. 62.47 ± 17.35%, p = 0.0246), and the wall motion score decreased (26.33 ± 5.57 vs. 22.33 ± 5.85, p = 0.0180) at the 12-month follow-up compared to the baseline values. The serial changes of LVEF were 0.67 ± 3.98, 8.09 ± 6.18, 9.04 ± 10.91, and 9.80 ± 7.56 at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, respectively as compared to the baseline.ConclusionThis pilot study shows that combined IC and IV transplantation of UMSC01 in STEMI patients with impaired LVEF appears to be safe, feasible, and potentially beneficial in improving heart function. Further phase 2 studies are required to explore the effectiveness of dual-route transplantation of UMSC01 in STEMI patients.

Abstract Background Globally, mortality rates of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) have decreased over the last two decades. However, evaluations of the temporal trends in the characteristics and outcomes of ICU patients in Asia are limited. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics and risk adjusted outcomes of all patients admitted to publicly funded ICUs in Hong Kong over a 11-year period. The secondary objective was to validate the predictive performance of Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) IV for ICU patients in Hong Kong. Methods This was an 11-year population-based retrospective study of all patients admitted to adult general (mixed medical-surgical) intensive care units in Hong Kong public hospitals. ICU patients were identified from a population electronic health record database. Prospectively collected APACHE IV data and clinical outcomes were analysed. Results From 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2019, there were a total of 133,858 adult ICU admissions in Hong Kong public hospitals. During this time, annual ICU admissions increased from 11,267 to 14,068, whilst hospital mortality decreased from 19.7 to 14.3%. The APACHE IV standard mortality ratio (SMR) decreased from 0.81 to 0.65 during the same period. Linear regression demonstrated that APACHE IV SMR changed by − 0.15 (95% CI − 0.18 to − 0.11) per year (Pearson’s R = − 0.951, p < 0.001). Observed median ICU length of stay was shorter than that predicted by APACHE IV (1.98 vs. 4.77, p < 0.001). C-statistic for APACHE IV to predict hospital mortality was 0.889 (95% CI 0.887 to 0.891) whilst calibration was limited (Hosmer–Lemeshow test p < 0.001). Conclusions Despite relatively modest per capita health expenditure, and a small number of ICU beds per population, Hong Kong consistently provides a high-quality and efficient ICU service. Number of adult ICU admissions has increased, whilst adjusted mortality has decreased over the last decade. Although APACHE IV had good discrimination for hospital mortality, it overestimated hospital mortality of critically ill patients in Hong Kong.

Objective: Twin-Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) sequence is a rare complication of monochorionic multiple gestation. Conservative management should be considered if there is no poor prognostic factor. Case report: This is a 35 year-old female with twin pregnancy with acardiac monster. Under the request of the patient, there was no intervention during the whole pregnancy. We keep regular and close sonography weekly follow up. There was no maternal complication and there was also no heart failure sign or polyhydramnios of the donor twin. Minimal blood flow was noted at the anastomotic vessels under the sonography at late gestational age. Due to breech presentation, cesarean section was performed at gestational age 37 + 1/7 weeks. She delivers a healthy baby smoothly. Conclusion: Antenatal sonography is an important tool to evaluate the fetus status. Under special condition, term pregnancy is still possible without any treatment. Case report: Twin reversed arterial perfusion syndrome in a monochorionic monoamniotic twin pregnancy.

Herein, two asymmetric chiral disc-bent core amphiphiles containing hexa‑peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC), R-HBC-BC and S-HBC-BC, were synthesized to study the effects of chiral alkyl chain on the self-assembly of the disc-bent core amphiphiles. Interestingly, instead of forming chiral superstructure, pure R-HBC-BC or S-HBC-BC self-assembled into irregular crystalline texture resulting from the introduction of the chiral alkyl chains. Surprisingly, the formation of helical superstructure can be achieved by co-assembling the chiral disc-bent core amphiphile with achiral HBC-BC, with twisted superstructures having saddle-like curvature observed, which was different from the conventional spiral superstructures. The shape effect on the chirality transfer mechanism from molecule to hierarchical superstructure was thus proposed based on structural analysis of the twisted superstructures. Such interesting morphological transitions among different self-assembled helical morphologies in thin film may provide new insights for the self-assembly of chiral supramolecules.

Abstract In the matrix model approaches of string/M theories, one starts from a generic symmetry gl(∞) to reproduce the space-time manifold. In this paper, we consider the generalization in which the space-time manifold emerges from a gauge symmetry algebra which is not necessarily gl(∞). We focus on the second nontrivial example after the toroidal compactification, the coset space G/H, and propose a specific infinite-dimensional symmetry which realizes the geometry. It consists of the gauge-algebra valued functions on the coset and Lorentzian generator pairs associated with the isometry. We show that the 0-dimensional gauge theory with the mass and Chern-Simons terms gives the gauge theory on the coset with scalar fields associated with H.

Abstract Background DNA methylation is a crucial epigenomic mechanism in various biological processes. Using whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) technology, methylated cytosine sites can be revealed at the single nucleotide level. However, the WGBS data analysis process is usually complicated and challenging. Results To alleviate the associated difficulties, we integrated the WGBS data processing steps and downstream analysis into a two-phase approach. First, we set up the required tools in Galaxy and developed workflows to calculate the methylation level from raw WGBS data and generate a methylation status summary, the mtable. This computation environment is wrapped into the Docker container image DocMethyl, which allows users to rapidly deploy an executable environment without tedious software installation and library dependency problems. Next, the mtable files were uploaded to the web server EpiMOLAS_web to link with the gene annotation databases that enable rapid data retrieval and analyses. Conclusion To our knowledge, the EpiMOLAS framework, consisting of DocMethyl and EpiMOLAS_web, is the first approach to include containerization technology and a web-based system for WGBS data analysis from raw data processing to downstream analysis. EpiMOLAS will help users cope with their WGBS data and also conduct reproducible analyses of publicly available data, thereby gaining insights into the mechanisms underlying complex biological phenomenon. Abstract We report a new graphene allotrope named HOT graphene containing carbon hexagons, octagons, and tetragons. A corresponding series of nanotubes are also constructed by rolling up the HOT graphene sheet. Ab initio calculations are performed on geometric and electronic structures of the HOT graphene and the HOT graphene nanotubes. Dirac cone and high Fermi velocity are achieved in a non-hexagonal structure of HOT graphene, implying that the honeycomb structure is not an indispensable condition for Dirac fermions to exist. HOT graphene nanotubes show distinctive electronic structures depending on their topology. The (0,1) n (n ≥ 3) HOT graphene nanotubes reveal the characteristics of semimetals, while the other set of nanotubes (1,0) n shows continuously adjustable band gaps (0~ 0.51 eV) with tube size. A competition between the curvature effect and the zone-folding approximation determines the band gaps of the (1,0) n nanotubes. Background: Tracheoplasty is a challenging surgical procedure for treating tracheal diseases. Preserving the voice and achieving normal breaths are considered favorable results. This article reports the mid-term results of tracheoplasty. Materials and Methods: From July 1988 to June 2018, a total of 91 adults with various tracheal diseases who underwent tracheoplasty were enrolled in this study. Tracheal diseases were divided into two categories. Category 1 was not related to neoplasm and included posttracheostomy or postintubation tracheal stenosis, caustic tracheal stricture, tuberculous tracheal stenosis, and congenital tracheal stenosis. Category 2 was related to neoplasm and included tracheal neoplasm and tracheal invasion by thyroid cancer or esophageal cancer. The surgical procedures mainly involved segmental resection of the trachea, telescopic anastomosis following a middle split of thyroid-cricoid cartilage, spiral tracheoplasty, and slide tracheoplasty. Results: One hospital death (1.1%) occurred. Favorable results of tracheoplasty were 81.3% (74/91). The failure rate of tracheoplasty was higher in Category 1 (24.2%, 15/62) than Category 2 (3.6%, 1/28). The subglottic involvement also induced a higher failure rate of tracheoplasty (35.3%, 6/17 vs. 13.7%, 10/73). However, the multivariate logistic regression model demonstrated that the category of tracheal disease and subglottis involvement did not statistically significant induce surgical failure of tracheoplasty. Sixteen (17.6%) patients had surgical failure resulted from anastomotic leaks, regrowth of granulation, or subglottic involvement. Conclusions: Carefully evaluating the tracheal lesions and selecting the appropriate surgical procedure can yield favorable results of tracheoplasty.

Objective. The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL™) 4.0 is a health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measure designed for clinical practice and research, health policy evaluation, and general population surveys. There is a dearth of instruments measuring quality of life in children which are available in Chinese and validated for Chinese populations. Therefore, this study attempted to establish the Hong Kong populations’ norms for the Chinese version of PedsQL™ and examined the psychometric properties of the measure for this population. Methods. Sixty-nine children (aged 7 to 12 years) and their parents completed the child self-report and the parent proxy report, respectively, of the PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Module. To evaluate construct validity, a group comparison of children with special educational needs (SEN) (n=21) and those with typical development (TD) (n=48) was conducted. Differences based on age group and gender and parent–child agreement on the perception of the child’s HRQOL were also examined. Results. Children with SEN had a lower quality of life perception than those with TD in the physical, social, and schooling domains. No significant differences in emotional health were found between the two groups. The differences between the children with SEN and with TD varied based on age group and gender. The differences between the parents’ and children’s perceptions of the children’s HRQOL were insignificant in this sample. Conclusion. Norms for the Chinese version of the PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Module for the Hong Kong population were established in the study, and both the child self-report and parent proxy report were found to be reliable and valid for this population.

BackgroundThe presence of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is very common in patients with concomitant left-sided valve disease. Recent studies have advocated an additional grading of massive TR that is beyond severe. The present study sought to characterize the spectrum of TR in patients undergoing tricuspid annuloplasty (TA) and to evaluate the prognostic value of TR severity for post-operative outcome following TA.MethodsA total of 176 patients who underwent TA with combined left-sided valve surgery, secondary to rheumatic valvular heart disease, were prospectively evaluated. The severity of TR was quantified by effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA) using the proximal isovelocity surface area method. Patients were categorized as having non-massive TR (EROA < 0.6 cm2) or massive TR (EROA ≥ 0.6 cm2). Adverse outcome was defined as all-cause mortality or heart failure requiring hospital admission following TA.ResultsA total of 55 (31%) patients were considered to have massive TR. Patients with massive TR had a greater right ventricular dimension but a smaller left ventricular dimension compared with those with non-massive TR. After a median follow-up of 39 months, 35 adverse events occurred. Cox-regression analysis showed that both continuous EROA and dichotomized EROA (massive vs. non-massive TR) were independently associated with adverse events even after multivariable adjustment. Further, Harrell C index demonstrated that the addition of massive TR provided better discrimination ability of a prediction model to known prognosticators following TA.ConclusionsMassive TR is common and up to 31% of study population had massive TR. Massive TR was associated with adverse outcome in patients undergoing TA. Classification of the severity of TR by quantitative measures and identification of massive TR in patients with concomitant left-sided valve disease are essential when considering the optimal timing of corrective surgery.

Ionizing radiation induces brain inflammation and the impairment of neurogenesis by activating microglia and inducing apoptosis in neurogenic zones. However, the causal relationship between microglial activation and the impairment of neurogenesis as well as the relevant molecular mechanisms involved in microRNA (miR) remain unknown. In the present study, we employed immunohistochemistry and real-time RT-PCR to study the microglial activation and miRNA expression in mouse brains. Real-time RT-PCR, western blot, ELISA, cell proliferation and cytotoxicity assay were used in BV2 and mouse neural stem cells (NSCs). In the mouse model, we found the acute activation of microglia at 1 day and an increased number of microglial cells at 1, 7 and 120 days after irradiation at postnatal day 3 (P3), day 10 (P10) and day 21 (P21), respectively. In cell models, the activation of BV2, a type of microglial cell line, was observed after gamma irradiation. Real-time RT-PCR analysis revealed a deceased expression of miR-181b-2-3p and an increased expression of its target SRY-related high-mobility group box transcription factor 21 (SOX21) in a dose- and time-dependent fashion. The results of the luciferase reporter assay confirmed that SOX21 was the target of miR-181b-2-3p. Furthermore, SOX21 knockdown by siRNA inhibited the activation of microglia, thereby suggesting that the direct interaction of 181b-2-3p with SOX21 might be involved in radiation-induced microglial activation and proliferation. Interestingly, the gamma irradiation of NSCs increased miR-181b-2-3p expression but decreased SOX21 mRNA, which was the opposite of irradiation-induced expression in BV2 cells. As irradiation reduced the viability and proliferation of NSCs, whereas the overexpression of SOX21 restored the impaired cell viability and promoted the proliferation of NSCs, the findings suggest that the radiation-induced interaction of miR-181b-2-3p with SOX21 may play dual roles in microglia and NSCs, respectively, leading to the impairment of brain neurogenesis.

Target-based point cloud registration methods are still widely used by many laser scanning professionals due to their direct and manipulable nature. However, placing and moving multiple targets such as spheres for registration is a time-consuming and tactical process. When the number of scans gets large, the time and labor costs will accumulate to a high level. In this paper, we propose a flexible registration method that requires the installation of only a low-cost cubical target: a die-like object. The method includes virtual coordinate system construction and two error compensation techniques, in which the non-orthogonality of the scanned facets, along with the unknown sizes of the dice are estimated based on projection geometry and cubical constraints so that three pairs of conjugate points can be accurately identified along the axes of the constructed coordinate systems for the registration. No scan overlap of the facet is needed. Two different low-cost dice (with a volume of 0.125 m3 and 0.027 m3) were used for verifying the proposed method, which shows that the proposed method delivers registration accuracy (with an RMSE discrepancy of less than 0.5 mm for check planes) comparable to the traditional sphere- based method using four to six spherical targets spanning the scene. Therefore, the proposed method is particularly useful for registering point clouds in harsh scanning environments with limited target-setting space and high chances of target interruption.

Soy intake is associated with lower breast cancer risk in observational studies concerning Asian women, however, no randomized controlled trials (RCT) have been conducted among Asian women living in Asia. This three-armed RCT assessed the effects of one-year soy isoflavone (ISF) intervention on mammographic density (MD) change among healthy peri- and postmenopausal Malaysian women. This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03686098). Participants were randomized into the 100 mg/day ISF Supplement, 50 mg/day ISF Diet, or control arm, and assessed for change in absolute and relative dense area from digital mammograms conducted at enrolment and after 12 months, compared over time across study arms using Kruskal-Wallis tests. Out of 118 women enrolled, 91 women completed the intervention, while 27 women (23%) were lost in follow up. The ISF supplement arm participants observed a larger decline in dense area (−1.3 cm2), compared to the ISF diet (−0.5 cm2) and control arm (−0.8 cm2), though it was not statistically significant (p = 0.48). Notably, among women enrolled within 5 years of menopause; dense area declined by 6 cm2 in the ISF supplement arm, compared to 2 in the control arm (p = 0.13). This RCT demonstrates a possible causal association between soy ISF intake and MD, a biomarker of breast cancer risk, among Asian women around the time of menopause, but these findings require confirmation in a larger trial.

Utilizing the controlled self-assembling of a giant surfactant, a bottom-up method for constructing line gratings with sub-10 nm resolution has been developed. Via a simple solvent vapor annealing procedure, the giant surfactant comprised of an oligomeric silsesquioxane (DPOSS) and polystyrene (PS) tail (i.e., DPOSS-PS) has been precisely self-assembled into perpendicularly oriented lamellae structures. A follow-up thermal annealing further significantly promotes the long-range ordering, giving rise to highly oriented and defect-free sub-10 nm line patterns (up to areas of several µm2). The solvent evaporation and thermal annealing process, together with the strong segregation strength (χN) of DPOSS-PS, play crucial roles in the self-orientation and width-reduction of the line patterns. This simple processing of the easy-accessed giant surfactants results in a facile and more economic approach for large-scale nano-sized line grating fabrication.

Background: Publication activity in the field of anesthesiology informs decisions that enhance academic advancement. Most previous bibliometric studies on anesthesiology examined data limited to journals focused on anesthesiology rather than data answerable to authors in anesthesia departments. This study comprehensively explored publication trends in the field of anesthesiology and their impact. We hypothesized that anesthesiology's bibliometric scene would differ based on whether articles in the same study period were published in anesthesiology-focused journals or were produced by authors in anesthesia departments but published in non-specialty journals.Methods: This cross-sectional study used bibliometric data from the Science Citation Index Expanded database between 1999 and 2018. Two datasets were assembled. The first dataset was a subject-dataset (articles published in 31 journals in the anesthesiology category of InCites Journal Citation Reports in 2018); the second dataset was the department-dataset (articles published in the Science Citation Index Expanded by authors in anesthesia departments). We captured the bibliographical record of each article in both datasets and noted each article's Institute for Scientific Information code, publication year, title, abstract, author addresses, subject category, and references for further study.Results: A total of 69,593 articles were published—cited 1,497,932 times—in the subject-dataset; a total of 167,501 articles were published—cited 3,731,540 times—in the department-dataset. The results demonstrate differences between the two datasets. First, the number of articles was stagnant, with little growth (average annual growth rate = 0.31%) in the subject-dataset; whereas there was stable growth (average annual growth rate = 4.50%) in articles in the department-dataset. Second, only 30.4% of anesthesia department articles were published in anesthesiology journals. Third, journals related to “pain” had the lowest department-subject ratio, which was attributable to a large portion of non-anesthesia department researchers' participation in related research.Conclusions: This study showed that articles published in anesthesiology-focused and non-specialty journals demonstrate fundamentally different trends. Thus, it not only helps researchers develop a more comprehensive understanding of the current publication status and trends in anesthesiology, but also provides a basis for national academic organizations to frame relevant anesthesiology development policies and rationalize resource allocation.

Unitarity demands that the black-hole final state (what remains inside the event horizon at complete evaporation) must be unique. Assuming a UV theory with infinitely many fields, we propose that the uniqueness of the final state can be achieved via a mechanism analogous to the quantum-mechanical description of dissipation.

This work aimed to examine the self-assembling behaviors of polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-P2VP) complexed with chiral dopants, R-/S-mandelic acid (R-/S-MA). Induced vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) due to intra-chain chiral interaction suggests the formation of helical P2VP with preferred handedness by complexation with R-/S-MA, demonstrating the induced circular dichroism (ICD) behaviors for the C-C single bond without high-degree tacticity. Owing to the microphase separation, helical superstructures with controlled helicity could be formed from the self-assembly of PS-P2VP with ICD. Most interestingly, the self-assembled helical ribbon exhibits reversed helical sense to the helical P2VP, as evidenced by induced VCD through inter-chain chiral interaction and rationalized using cholesteric hard-core model due to a large value of P/d ratio.

The state-of-the-art phase-change memory is usually composed of ovonic threshold switching (OTS) material and ovonic memory switching (OMS) material for selective and data storage, respectively. OMS materials have been intensely studied, while the knowledge of the OTS mechanism is still inadequate. In this article, we have explored the local structure and electronic property of a simple OTS material, the amorphous (a-) SiTe, by first-principles calculations. The results reveal that most of the atoms in a-SiTe obey the “8-N” rule in contrast to a-GeTe, a well-studied OMS material. 76.5% of Si-centered configurations are in the form of randomly distributed tetrahedral clusters, while Te-centered configurations are relatively disordered without notable conformation. Furthermore, a large number of fivefold rings are found in a-SiTe. All of these structural characteristics lead to the high stability of a-SiTe, prohibiting its crystallization. In addition, the p state of Te also contributes much to the mid-gap states, which may be relevant for OTS behavior. Our findings provide an in-depth understanding of the structural signature and electronic properties of a-SiTe, having important implications for the design and applications of OTS materials.

Summary: This protocol combines a protective cutting method to prepare various brain slices from adult mice and real-time monitoring of circadian oscillations to measure circadian rhythmicity in various brain slices. This protocol can be applied to studies of how brain damages affect local circadian clocks and subsequent circadian variations in nearby areas. Further functional analyses with in vivo systems will determine whether these circadian variations are detrimental or beneficial to the brain.For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Huang et al. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is, currently, the recommended treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, long-term chemoembolization triggers the inflammatory response and may lead to postembolization syndrome (PES). Although several types of degradable microspheres have been developed to reduce drug toxicity and PES incidence, the clinical outcomes remain unsatisfactory. Previously, we have developed a new type of spherical, calibrated, biodegradable, radiopaque microspheres (SCBRM) and demonstrated their safety and efficacy in a pig model. Thus, the goal of this feasibility study was to determine the clinical safety and efficacy of the new SCBRM in intermediate-stage HCC patients. In this study, 12 intermediate-stage HCC patients underwent TACE using SCBRM with a calibrated size of 100–250 μm. The disease control rates at 1 month and 3 months after TACE-SCBRM treatment were 100% and 75.0%, respectively. The objective response rates at 1 month and 3 months after treatment were 66.7% and 58.3%, respectively. Very few adverse events were observed with one patient developing nausea. One day after the treatment, alanine aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and total bilirubin levels were slightly elevated in the patients, but all returned to baseline on day 7. The median and mean overall survival times were 33 months (interquartile range, 12.8–42.0) and 29.2 ± 14.3 months, respectively. The 1-year and 2-year survival rates were 91.7% and 58.3%, respectively. In conclusion, TACE with the new SCBRM microspheres is clinically safe and effective, and it represents a promising approach in the management of intermediate-stage HCC.

Background: Major depressive episodes (MDEs) are common during pregnancy and postpartum periods, and the consequences can be severe to mother and offspring. Few studies have investigated the clinical factors associated with the onset and remission of perinatal depression in different time points. Methods: A cohort of 234 pregnant women was recruited and assessed with structured Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) for diagnoses of MDEs. The severity of mood status was measured with Taiwanese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS-T) and the second edition of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) at 16 weeks’ gestation, 28 weeks’ gestation and 4 weeks postpartum. Statistical analysis was conducted by independent t-tests, chi-squared, and Fisher’s exact tests. Results: Thirty-one pregnant women (13.2%) developed MDEs; 11 (4.7%) at the 16th week, 8 (3.4%) at the 28th week of gestation, and 12 (5.1%) at the 4th week of postpartum. Among the 19 women with prenatal MDEs, 9 (47%) experienced remission by the end of pregnancy, and 10 sustained, resulting in the cumulative prevalence of 9.4% (22 out of 234) for postpartum MDEs. Women with lower levels of education, family history of psychiatric disorders, lack of postpartum recuperation, and family-bond stress were more likely to experience MDEs. More preterm birth and lower birth weights were reported in postpartum-onset than pregnancy-onset MDEs. Psychiatric interventions were associated with a higher percentage of remission of MDE during the perinatal period. Conclusion: The findings of this study provide clinical implications for early detection and intervention of MDEs throughout the pregnancy. Abstract In this paper, the structural, electronic, and optical properties of MoS2 multilayers are investigated by employing the first-principles method. Up to six-layers of MoS2 have been comparatively studied. The covalency and ionicity in the MoS2 monolayer are shown to be stronger than those in the bulk. As the layer number is increased to two or above two, band splitting is significant due to the interlayer coupling. We found that long plateaus emerged in the imaginary parts of the dielectric function ε2xxω $$ {\varepsilon}_2^{xx}\left(\omega \right) $$ and the joint density of states (JDOS) of MoS2 multilayers, due to the Van Hove singularities in a two-dimensional material. One, two and three small steps appear at the thresholds of both the long plateau of ε2xxω $$ {\varepsilon}_2^{xx}\left(\omega \right) $$ and JDOS, for monolayer, bilayer, and trilayer, respectively. As the number of layers further increased, the number of small steps increases and the width of the small steps decreases accordingly. Due to interlayer coupling, the longest plateau and shortest plateau of JDOS are from the monolayer and bulk, respectively.

Abstract Assuming spherical symmetry and the semi-classical Einstein equation, we prove that, for the observers on top of the trapping horizon, the vacuum energy-momentum tensor is always that of an ingoing negative energy flux at the speed of light with a universal energy density ℰ ≃ − 1/(2κa 2), (where a is the areal radius of the trapping horizon), which is responsible for the decrease in the black hole’s mass over time. This result is independent of the composition of the collapsing matter and the details of the vacuum energy-momentum tensor. The physics behind the universality of this quantity ℰ and its surprisingly large magnitude will be discussed.
