Background: Seriously injured persons with pre-existing psychiatric conditions or those injured due to violent crimes represent a particularly vulnerable treatment group. Methods: All patients with injuries from suicidal attempts (PSAs) or patients with injuries from violent offenses (PVOs) that presented to the university emergency room of a Level 1 trauma center in Germany between 1 January 2017 and 31 November 2022 were retrospectively investigated. Results: It can be seen that PVOs were significantly younger compared to PSAs (p = 0.03). Total hospital stay was significantly longer for PSAs compared to PVOs (p < 0.001). PSAs were also significantly more severely injured than PVOs (p < 0.001). Our study was able to show a significant difference between both patient groups in the region of injury (p < 0.001). PSAs had a significantly more extensive psychiatric history than PVOs (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Injuries from suicide attempts and violent offenses are a serious and growing public health problem, but one that can be addressed through timely, evidence-based, and often cost-effective interventions. It requires early interaction among multiple disciplines and a standardized approach.

SARS-CoV-2 infection was shown to induce proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) plasma levels in sepsis. Here, we investigate the association between serum PCSK9 levels and disease severity. PCSK9 was measured in serum of 55 controls, 40 patients with moderate and 60 patients with severe COVID-19 disease. Serum PCSK9 was elevated in moderate COVID-19 compared to controls and further increased in severe cases. PCSK9 levels were not associated with C-reactive protein, bacterial superinfections, interventions, or survival in patients with severe COVID-19. PCSK9 regulates circulating cholesterol levels, and 15 cholesteryl ester (CE) species and free cholesterol (FC) were quantified by direct flow injection analysis using a high-resolution hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometer. Most CE species with shorter fatty acid chains were decreased in severe compared to moderate COVID-19, and none of the CE species were correlated with PCSK9 in patients with severe COVID-19. Levels of all CE species negatively correlated with C-reactive protein in severe COVID-19 patients. Notably, FC was induced in severe compared to moderate COVID-19. The FC/CE ratio correlated positively with inflammatory markers and was associated with non-survival. The current study suggests that the imbalance between CE and FC levels is associated with disease severity and mortality in patients with COVID-19.

The degradation of different flexible polyurethane foams for molded application after thermal aging were compared. A reference sample using traditional higher emission additives and four samples of different composition using low-emission additives were compared. For the modified samples volatile organic compound (VOC) and semi-volatile organic compound (FOG/SVOC) contents fell well below the benchmarking limits, which indicates that the selected low-emission additives are incorporated into the polymer chain. To examine different material properties and for evaluating changes due to increased temperature exposure for a prolonged period of time mechanical and acoustic tests were carried out before and after dry heat aging. It was found that two low emission samples exhibited superior sound absorption compared to the reference sample along with less significant change after aging in the acoustic properties. The compressive strength was lower than the reference as a result of lower product densities. However, the change in compressive strength after aging was less than 15% (with one exception), which is acceptable according to the standard requirements. Thermogravimetric analysis was also performed and revealed that no significant difference can be observed between the examined samples due to heat degradation, indicating that the modifications made to reduce VOC content did not adversely affect the foam’s resistance to thermal degradation.

Artificial Intelligence tools have gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential to transform various sectors by automating tasks, improving efficiency, and enhancing decision-making processes. This paper explores the success of Artificial Intelligence tools, particularly ChatGPT, using the Information System-success-based framework from the perspective of users. Structural Equation Modeling techniques were applied to data collected from users of ChatGPT. The study empirically evaluated a model for measuring the success of Artificial Intelligence tools, incorporating constructs from the updated DeLone and McLean Information System success model. Four out of five hypothesized relationships between the success variables were significantly supported. The findings of this study can be used to assess the success of Artificial Intelligence tools like ChatGPT from the standpoint of their users.

Predicting responses and monitoring the severity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is challenging due to a lack of specific biomarkers. This study identifies urinary hydroxyproline, a marker of collagen turnover elevated in experimental colitis, as independent of conventional biomarkers like creatinine, glomerular filtration rate, C-reactive protein, and fecal calprotectin. Among 71 IBD patients, urinary hydroxyproline levels were significantly higher compared with 36 controls, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.814, highlighting its potential as a diagnostic tool. No significant difference in hydroxyproline levels was observed between the 50 Crohn’s disease and 21 ulcerative colitis patients, nor was there a correlation with kidney function markers, gastrointestinal symptom severity, or stool consistency. Disease localization was not associated with urinary hydroxyproline levels. Interestingly, 14 patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis and IBD also exhibited elevated urinary hydroxyproline levels, comparable to IBD patients but higher than healthy controls. This underscores the role of urinary hydroxyproline as an independent biomarker for IBD diagnosis, without association with disease severity or established markers like fecal calprotectin.

Abstract Paneth cells (PCs), a subset of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) found at the base of small intestinal crypts, play an essential role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis. Altered PCs function is associated with diverse intestinal pathologies, including ileal Crohn’s disease (CD). CD patients with ileal involvement have been previously demonstrated to display impairment in PCs and decreased levels of anti-microbial peptides. Although the immunosuppressive drug Azathioprine (AZA) is widely used in CD therapy, the impact of AZA on IEC differentiation remains largely elusive. In the present study, we hypothesized that the orally administered drug AZA also exerts its effect through modulation of the intestinal epithelium and specifically via modulation of PC function. AZA-treated CD patients exhibited an ileal upregulation of AMPs on both mRNA and protein levels compared to non-AZA treated patients. Upon in vitro AZA stimulation, intestinal epithelial cell line MODE-K exhibited heightened expression levels of PC marker in concert with diminished cell proliferation but boosted mitochondrial OXPHOS activity. Moreover, differentiation of IECs, including PCs differentiation, was boosted in AZA-treated murine small intestinal organoids and was associated with decreased D-glucose consumption and decreased growth rates. Of note, AZA treatment strongly decreased Lgr5 mRNA expression as well as Ki67 positive cells. Further, AZA restored dysregulated PCs associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. AZA-dependent inhibition of IEC proliferation is accompanied by boosted mitochondria function and IEC differentiation into PC.

Abstract A reduction in animal-based diets has driven market demand for alternative meat products, currently raising a new generation of plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs). It remains unclear whether these substitutes are a short-lived trend or become established in the long term. Over the last few years, the trend of increasing sales and diversifying product range has continued, but publication activities in this field are currently limited mainly to market research and food technology topics. As their popularity increases, questions emerge about the safety and nutritional risks of these novel products. Even though all the examined products must be heated before consumption, consumers lack experience with this type of product and thus further research into product safety, is desirable. To consider these issues, we examined 32 PBMAs from Austrian supermarkets. Based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, the majority of the products were dominated by lactic acid bacteria (either Leuconostoc or Latilactobacillus), and generally had low alpha diversity. Pseudomonadota (like Pseudomonas and Shewanella) dominated the other part of the products. In addition to LABs, a high diversity of different Bacillus, but also some Enterobacteriaceae and potentially pathogenic species were isolated with the culturing approach. We assume that especially the dominance of heterofermentative LABs has high relevance for the product stability and quality with the potential to increase shelf life of the products. The number of isolated Enterobacteriaceae and potential pathogens were low, but they still demonstrated that these products are suitable for their presence.

Abstract Global flood impacts have risen in recent decades. While increasing exposure was the dominant driver of surging impacts, counteracting vulnerability reductions have been detected, but were too weak to reverse this trend. To assess the ongoing progress on vulnerability reduction, we combine a recently available dataset of flooded areas derived from satellite imagery for 913 events with four global disaster databases and socio-economic data. Event-specific flood vulnerabilities for assets, fatalities and displacements reveal a lack of progress in reducing global flood vulnerability from 2000—2018. We examine the relationship between vulnerabilities and human development, inequality, flood exposure and local structural characteristics. We find that vulnerability levels are significantly lower in areas with good structural characteristics and significantly higher in low developed areas. However, socio-economic development was insufficient to reduce vulnerabilities over the study period. Nevertheless, the strong correlation between vulnerability and structural characteristics suggests further potential for adaptation through vulnerability reduction.

Operating in urban waters with an autonomous vessel can be challenging. The autonomous vessel must be able to react quickly and detect obstacles to avoid collisions and risky maneuvers. Exteroceptive sensors such as LiDAR and RADAR have typically been used with great success in the maritime domain, but the measurements are often too sparse to represent smaller obstacles during docking and other maritime operations. However, other sensor modalities, such as stereo cameras, can provide both appearance and dense depth information. In this paper, we present a stereo camera-based free space estimation method for the maritime domain. The mapping of navigable areas is crucial for path planning and collision avoidance systems. To robustly estimate the free space, we use vertically oriented rectangular segments known as stixels. We utilized both stereo correspondences and a recent image segmentation network trained on a large, generalized dataset to create the stixels. To validate our approach, we analyzed the estimated free space, evaluating both the accuracy and consistency in the estimated depth over time. We demonstrate the approach using a real dataset recorded with a stereo camera mounted on an autonomous ferry and compare its accuracy against measurements from a LiDAR.

IntroductionThe use of implantable antibiotic beads has become a frequent treatment modality for the management of surgical site infections in human and veterinary medicine. The objective of this study is to describe the elution kinetics of five antibiotics from a commercially available calcium sulfate antibiotic delivery kit. A secondary goal was to compare elution concentrations with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for commonly encountered bacteria from the University of Florida’s veterinary microbiology laboratory database.MethodsCalcium sulfate powder was combined with amikacin, cefazolin, gentamicin, ampicillin/sulbactam, and meropenem. Triplicates of three antibiotic-loaded beads were immersed in 5 mL of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and kept at 37°C under constant agitation. Antibiotic-conditioned PBS was sampled at 14 time points from 1-h to 30 days and analyzed by liquid chromatography to determine the antibiotic concentration.ResultsAll beads eluted concentrations of antibiotics for the 30-day sampling period, except for ampicillin/sulbactam, with the most antibiotics being eluted within the first week. The concentration of antibiotics within the eluent within the first 3–9 days (3- and 5-mm beads, respectively) was greater than the MIC of common isolates. The 5 mm bead samples were superior in maintaining higher concentrations for a longer period, compared to the 3-mm beads.DiscussionCSH beads eluted antibiotics over the 30-day course of the study. Most of the antibiotic elution occurred within the first week and was maintained above the MIC of commonly encountered isolates. This information may be useful for clinical decision making for treatment of local infections encountered in practice.

Abstract Monoclonal IgG antibodies constitute the fastest growing class of therapeutics. Thus, there is an intense interest to design more potent antibody formats, where long plasma half-life is a commercially competitive differentiator affecting dosing, frequency of administration and thereby potentially patient compliance. Here, we report on an Fc-engineered variant with three amino acid substitutions Q311R/M428E/N434W (REW), that enhances plasma half-life and mucosal distribution, as well as allows for needle-free delivery across respiratory epithelial barriers in human FcRn transgenic mice. In addition, the Fc-engineered variant improves on-target complement-mediated killing of cancer cells as well as both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Hence, this versatile Fc technology should be broadly applicable in antibody design aiming for long-acting prophylactic or therapeutic interventions.

Abstract Background Intravitreal injection (IVI) of antibody biologics is a key treatment approach in ophthalmology. Pharmaceutical compounding and storage of prefilled syringes for IVI must take place without impairing the structure and function of the biologics. This study investigated the effect of withdrawing and storing the therapeutic antibody faricimab (Vabysmo, Roche, Basel, Switzerland) in the Zero Residual silicone oil-free, 0.2-mL syringe (SJJ Solutions, The Hague, the Netherlands). Methods To assess the effect of syringe withdrawal on faricimab, we compared samples from syringes prepared at day 0 with samples taken directly from faricimab vials. To assess the effect of syringe storage on faricimab, we kept prefilled syringes in the dark at 4 oC for 7, 14, or 37 days and compared samples from these syringes with day 0. We measured protein concentration (with spectrophotometry), stability and integrity (with sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), and melting temperature (Tm)), as well as binding of faricimab to its cognate antigens: vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) (with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)). Results Faricimab migrated in line with its expected molecular mass under both reducing and non-reducing conditions for all time points when analyzed with SDS-PAGE, without any sign of degradation products or aggregation. The SEC elution profiles were identical for all time points. There were slight variations in Tm for different time points compared to day 0 but without consistent relationship with storage time. ELISA did not detect differences in VEGF-A or Ang-2 binding between time points, and faricimab did not bind the neonatal Fc receptor. Conclusions Withdrawal and storage of faricimab in syringes for up to day 37 did not impair the structure and bi-specific binding properties of the therapeutic antibody.

Extreme weather events, such as tropical cyclones, often trigger population displacement. The frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones are affected by anthropogenic climate change. However, the effect of historical climate change on displacement risk has so far not been quantified. Here, we show how displacement can be partially attributed to climate change using the example of the 2019 Tropical Cyclone Idai in Mozambique. We estimate the population exposed to high water levels following Idai's landfall using a combination of a 2D hydrodynamical storm surge model and a flood depth estimation algorithm to determine inland flood depths from remote sensing images, factual (climate change) and counterfactual (no climate change) mean sea level, and maximum wind speed conditions. Our main estimates indicate that climate change has increased displacement risk from this event by approximately 12 600–14 900 additional displaced persons, corresponding to about 2.7 % to 3.2 % of the observed displacements. The isolated effect of wind speed intensification is double that of sea level rise. These results are subject to important uncertainties related to both data and modeling assumptions, and we perform multiple sensitivity experiments to assess the range of uncertainty where possible. Besides highlighting the significant effects on humanitarian conditions already imparted by climate change, our study provides a blueprint for event-based displacement attribution.

Attila Kerényi, Professor of Geography, was born in 1943 in Sátoraljaújhely. He earned a degree as a teacher of Geography and Biology in 1967. During the 1980s, he gained national and international scientific recognition for his research on soil erosion processes, and completed his candidate dissertation in 1984. In the 1990s, he became nationally acknowledged for his publications, textbooks and scientific books on landscape and environmental protection, and earned an academic doctorate title in the topic. His scientific work was recognized with numerous awards. In 2020, he was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in recognition of his several decades of research and teaching activities which have greatly contributed to the renewal of geography education at the University of Debrecen. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, his colleagues interviewed Professor Kerényi about his family, profession, achievements and the state of global environmental systems.

Bacterial and fungal superinfections are common in COVID-19, and early diagnosis can enable timely intervention. Serum calprotectin levels increase with bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. This study evaluated serum calprotectin as a diagnostic and prognostic tool for microbial superinfections in COVID-19. Serum samples from adult patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 were collected during hospitalization from 2020 to 2024. Calprotectin levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 63 patients with moderate COVID-19, 60 patients with severe COVID-19, and 34 healthy individuals. Calprotectin serum levels were elevated in patients with moderate COVID-19 compared with controls, and these levels were further increased in the severe cases. Patients with severe COVID-19 and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) bacteremia had elevated calprotectin levels, but their C-reactive protein and procalcitonin levels were not increased. Fungal superinfections and herpes simplex virus reactivation did not change the calprotectin levels. A calprotectin concentration of 31.29 µg/mL can be used to diagnose VRE bloodstream infection with 60% sensitivity and 96% specificity. These data suggest that serum calprotectin may be a promising biomarker for the early detection of VRE bloodstream infections in patients with COVID-19.

Infectious diseases are associated with low iron levels and the induction of hepcidin, the primary protein regulating cellular iron export. Bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6), a key regulator of hepcidin expression, has not yet been analyzed in the plasma of patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or sepsis. An analysis of 38 SIRS, 39 sepsis, and 78 septic shock patients revealed similar levels of BMP6 in sepsis and septic shock, which were lower compared to patients with SIRS and healthy controls. Plasma BMP6 levels did not correlate with procalcitonin and C-reactive protein levels in patients with SIRS or sepsis/septic shock. Neither bacterial nor SARS-CoV-2 infections affected plasma BMP6 levels. There was no difference in BMP6 levels between ventilated and non-ventilated patients, or between patients with and without dialysis. Vasopressor therapy did not alter BMP6 levels. Survivors had plasma BMP6 levels similar to non-survivors. Due to the high variability of plasma BMP6 levels, these analyses have limited clinical relevance. Iron, ferritin, and transferrin levels were known in at least 50% of patients but did not correlate with plasma BMP6 levels. In conclusion, this study showed normal BMP6 plasma levels in SIRS, which are reduced in patients with sepsis and septic shock. This suggests that the commonly observed increase in hepcidin levels and the decline in iron levels in SIRS, sepsis, and septic shock are not due to higher BMP6.

Neutrophils are critical immune cells in severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). S100 calcium-binding protein A12 (S100A12) is highly expressed in neutrophils during acute inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum S100A12 levels as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in COVID-19. Serum samples of patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 were collected during 2020 to 2024. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure serum S100A12 levels in 63 patients with moderate COVID-19, 60 patients with severe disease and 33 healthy controls. Serum S100A12 levels were elevated in moderate COVID-19 compared to controls and were even higher in severe cases. In moderate disease, serum S100A12 levels positively correlated with immune cell counts. While C-reactive protein and procalcitonin are established inflammation markers, they did not correlate with serum S100A12 levels in either patient cohort. Patients with severe COVID-19 and vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) infection had increased S100A12 levels. Elevated S100A12 levels were also observed in patients with herpes simplex reactivation. Fungal superinfections did not alter S100A12 levels. These data show that serum S100A12 increases in moderate and severe COVID-19 and is further elevated by VRE bloodstream infection and herpes simplex reactivation. Therefore, S100A12 may serve as a novel biomarker for severe COVID-19 and an early diagnostic indicator for bacterial and viral infections.

IntroductionThe genotype of symptomatic left ventricular noncompaction phenotype (LVNC) subjects with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and its effect on clinical presentation are less well studied. We aimed to characterize the genetic, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and clinical background, and genotype-phenotype relationship in LVNC with preserved LVEF.MethodsWe included 54 symptomatic LVNC individuals (LVEF: 65 ± 5%) whose samples were analyzed with a 174-gene next-generation sequencing panel and 54 control (C) subjects. The results were evaluated using the criteria of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. Medical data suggesting a higher risk of cardiovascular complications were considered “red flags”.ResultsOf the LVNC population, 24% carried pathogenic or likely pathogenic (P) mutations; 56% carried variants of uncertain significance (VUS); and 20% were free from cardiomyopathy-related mutations. Regarding the CMR parameters, the LVNC and C groups differed significantly, while the three genetic subgroups were comparable. We found a significant relationship between red flags and genotype; furthermore, the number of red flags in a single subject differed significantly among the genetic subgroups (p = 0.002) and correlated with the genotype (r = 0.457, p = 0.01). In 6 out of 7 LVNC subjects diagnosed in childhood, P or VUS mutations were found.DiscussionThe large number of P mutations and the association between red flags and genotype underline the importance of genetic-assisted risk stratification in symptomatic LVNC with preserved LVEF.

Neurovascular coupling (NVC), or the adjustment of blood flow in response to local increases in neuronal activity is a hallmark of healthy brain function, and the physiological foundation for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, it remains only partly understood due to the high complexity of the structure and function of the cerebrovascular network. Here we set out to understand NVC at the network level, i.e. map cerebrovascular network reactivity to activation of neighbouring neurons within a 500×500×500 μm3 cortical volume (∼30 high-resolution 3-nL fMRI voxels). Using 3D two-photon fluorescence microscopy data, we quantified blood volume and flow changes in the brain vessels in response to spatially targeted optogenetic activation of cortical pyramidal neurons. We registered the vessels in a series of image stacks acquired before and after stimulations and applied a deep learning pipeline to segment the microvascular network from each time frame acquired. We then performed image analysis to extract the microvascular graphs, and graph analysis to identify the branch order of each vessel in the network, enabling the stratification of vessels by their branch order, designating branches 1–3 as precapillary arterioles and branches 4+ as capillaries. Forty-five percent of all vessels showed significant calibre changes; with 85 % of responses being dilations. The largest absolute CBV change was in the capillaries; the smallest, in the venules. Capillary CBV change was also the largest fraction of the total CBV change, but normalized to the baseline volume, arterioles and precapillary arterioles showed the biggest relative CBV change. From linescans along arteriole-venule microvascular paths, we measured red blood cell velocities and hematocrit, allowing for estimation of pressure and local resistance along these paths. While diameter changes following neuronal activation gradually declined along the paths; the pressure drops from arterioles to venules increased despite decreasing resistance: blood flow thus increased more than local resistance decreases would predict. By leveraging functional volumetric imaging and high throughput deep learning-based analysis, our study revealed distinct hemodynamic responses across the vessel types comprising the microvascular network. Our findings underscore the need for large, dense sampling of brain vessels for characterization of neurovascular coupling at the network level in health and disease.

BackgroundCardiac rotational parameters in primary symptomatic left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) are not well understood. We aimed to analyze cardiac rotation measured with cardiac magnetic resonance feature-tracking (CMR-FT) and speckle-tracking echocardiography (Echo-ST) in LVNC morphology subjects with preserved LVEF and different genotypes and healthy controls.MethodsOur retrospective study included 54 LVNC subjects with preserved LVEF and 54 control individuals. We evaluated functional and rotational parameters with CMR in the total study population and with echocardiography in 39 LVNC and 40 C individuals. All LVNC subjects were genotyped with a 174-gene next-generation sequencing panel and grouped into the subgroups: benign (B), variant of uncertain significance (VUS), and pathogenic (P).ResultsIn comparison with controls, LVNC subjects had reduced apical rotational degree (p = 0.004) and one-third had negative apical rotation. While the degree of apical rotation was comparable between the three genetic subgroups, they differed significantly in the direction of apical rotation (pConclusionWhile measuring cardiac rotation using both CMR-FT and Echo-ST methods, subclinical mechanical differences were identified in subjects with LVNC phenotype and preserved LVEF, especially in cases with genetic involvement.

Abstract Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) reactivation may be involved in long-COVID symptoms, but reactivation of other viruses as a factor has received less attention. Here we evaluated the reactivation of parvovirus-B19 and several members of the Herpesviridae family (DNA viruses) in patients with long-COVID syndrome. We hypothesized that monovalent COVID-19 vaccines inhibit viral interference between SARS-CoV-2 and several DNA viruses in patients with long-COVID syndrome, thereby reducing clinical symptoms. Clinical and laboratory data for 252 consecutive patients with PCR-verified past SARS-CoV-2 infection and long-COVID syndrome (155 vaccinated and 97 non-vaccinated) were recorded during April 2021–May 2022 (median 243 days post-COVID-19 infection). DNA virus–related IgG and IgM titers were compared between vaccinated and non-vaccinated long-COVID patients and with age- and sex-matched non-infected, unvaccinated (pan-negative for spike-antibody) controls. The first chapter is the introduction, in the second chapter we present the latest ranking list of Hungarian scientists in 2023, the third chapter is the conclusions.

Reducing the negative emotions experienced in Self-Driving cars is key to increasing the number of users. To reduce anxiety, AI-based systems that measure the physiological response of passengers, mainly using biometric data, are used. In the future, the vehicle must be sufficiently emptical to reduce people’s distrust. The potential for hacking is still one of the main sources of anxiety about Self-Driving cars. To live with this difficulty, users need to be confronted with what machine learning means and accept that, contrary to expectations, Self-Driving cars cannot yet be 4 or 5 times safer than manual driving. To achieve the greater good – energy savings and lower emissions, efficient transport networks, greater use of digital infrastructure, safer and more usable public spaces, etc. – we need to be patient with Self-Driving vehicles.

Abstract We present a new open source dataset FLODIS that links estimates of flood-induced human displacements, fatalities, and economic damages to flooded areas observed through remote sensing. The dataset connects displacement data from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), as well as data on fatalities and damages from the Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT), with the Global Flood Database (GFD), a satellite-based inventory of historic flood footprints. It thereby provides a spatially explicit estimate of the flood hazard underlying each individual disaster event. FLODIS contains two datasets with event-specific information for 335 human displacement events and 695 mortality/damage events that occurred around the world between 2000 and 2018. Additionally, we provide estimates of affected population, GDP, and critical infrastructure, as well as socio-economic indicators; and we provide geocoding for displacement events ascribed to other types of disasters, such as tropical cyclones, so that they may be linked to corresponding hazard estimates in future work. FLODIS facilitates integrated flood risk analysis, allowing, for example, for detailed assessments of local flood-damage and displacement vulnerability.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study is to connect peri-implantitis to cardiovascular diseases, following the association found between periodontitis and cardiovascular conditions in recent years. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science online databases were searched up to June 2023, with the exclusion criteria being research written in a language other than English. The MeSH search items were as follows: [“peri-implant health OR peri-implantitis OR peri-implant mucositis OR peri-implant disease”] AND [“cardiovascular diseases”]. Patient/population (P), intervention (I), comparison (C), outcome (O) framework questions were followed to identify the clinical evidence for the systematic review. Only clinical studies that used a control group to compare the relationship between cardiovascular diseases and peri-implantitis were selected. Results: A total of 118 studies were identified through electronic search of the keywords. After removing duplicates, there were 76 records to be screened. Upon exclusion of ineligible titles and abstracts, 27 studies remained for evaluation. Finally, 23 studies were excluded for not meeting the inclusion criteria, leaving 4 studies to be included in the qualitative analyses. Conclusions: This study found there is a linear association between mucosal/gingival inflammation and carotid intima–media thickness test (c-IMT) values. Peri-implant mucosal inflammation could be a contributor to the vascular disease burden of an individual; further specific clinical studies should be performed in order to demonstrate this connection.

Adiponectin is primarily known for its protective role in metabolic diseases, and it also possesses immunoregulatory properties. Elevated levels of adiponectin have been observed in various inflammatory diseases. However, studies investigating adiponectin levels in the serum of COVID-19 patients have yielded conflicting results. This study aimed to assess serum adiponectin levels in 26 healthy controls, as well as in 64 patients with moderate and 60 patients with severe COVID-19, to determine a potential association between serum adiponectin and the severity of COVID-19. Serum adiponectin levels in severe COVID-19 patients were significantly lower than in those with moderate disease and healthy controls, who exhibited similar serum adiponectin levels. Among patients with moderate disease, positive correlations were observed between serum adiponectin and C-reactive protein levels. Of note, serum adiponectin levels of severe COVID-19 cases were comparable between patients with and without dialysis or vasopressor therapy. Superinfection with bacteria did not exert a notable influence on serum adiponectin levels in patients with severe disease. Patients who were diagnosed with severe COVID-19 and vancomycin-resistant enterococci bacteremia showed a significant reduction in their serum adiponectin levels. An analysis conducted on the entire cohort, including both moderate and severe COVID-19 patients, showed that individuals who did not survive had lower serum adiponectin levels when compared to those who survived. In summary, this study highlights a decrease in serum adiponectin levels in severe COVID-19 cases, indicating the potential utility of adiponectin as an additional biomarker for monitoring disease severity in COVID-19 or critical illnesses in general.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have gained considerable attention due to their versatile and designable properties. ILs show great potential as antibacterial agents, but understanding the mechanism of attack on bacterial cells is essential to ensure the optimal design of IL-based biocides. The final aim is to achieve maximum efficacy while minimising toxicity and preventing resistance development in target organisms. In this study, we examined a dose–response analysis of ILs’ antimicrobial activity against two pathogenic bacteria with different Gram types in terms of molecular responses on a cellular level using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In total, 18 ILs with different antimicrobial active motifs were evaluated on the Gram-negative enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The results showed that most ILs impact bacterial proteins with increasing concentration but have a minimal effect on cellular membranes. Dose–response spectral analysis revealed a distinct ante-mortem response against certain ILs for MRSA but not for EPEC. We found that at sub-lethal concentrations, MRSA actively changed their membrane composition to counteract the damaging effect induced by the ILs. This suggests a new adaptive mechanism of Gram-positive bacteria against ILs and demonstrates the need for a better understanding before using such substances as novel antimicrobials.

Abstract Whether a relationship exists between cerebrovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease has been a source of controversy. Evaluation of the temporal progression of imaging biomarkers of these disease processes may inform mechanistic associations. We investigate the relationship of disease trajectories of cerebrovascular disease (white matter hyperintensity, WMH, and fractional anisotropy, FA) and Alzheimer’s disease (amyloid and tau PET) biomarkers in 2406 Mayo Clinic Study of Aging and Mayo Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center participants using accelerated failure time models. The model assumes a common pattern of progression for each biomarker that is shifted earlier or later in time for each individual and represented by a per participant age adjustment. Abstract Background Partial splenic embolization (PSE) is a non-surgical procedure which was initially used to treat hypersplenism. Furthermore, partial splenic embolization can be used for the treatment of different conditions, including gastroesophageal variceal hemorrhage. Here, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of emergency and non-emergency PSE in patients with gastroesophageal variceal hemorrhage and recurrent portal hypertensive gastropathy bleeding due to cirrhotic (CPH) and non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH). Methods From December 2014 to July 2022, twenty-five patients with persistent esophageal variceal hemorrhage (EVH) and gastric variceal hemorrhage (GVH), recurrent EVH and GVH, controlled EVH with a high risk of recurrent bleeding, controlled GVH with a high risk of rebleeding, and portal hypertensive gastropathy due to CPH and NCPH underwent emergency and non-emergency PSE. PSE for treatment of persistent EVH and GVH was defined as emergency PSE. In all patients pharmacological and endoscopic treatment alone had not been sufficient to control variceal bleeding, and the placement of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) was contraindicated, not reasonable due to portal hemodynamics, or TIPS failure with recurrent esophageal bleeding had occurred. The patients were followed-up for six months. Results All twenty-five patients, 12 with CPH and 13 with NCPH were successfully treated with PSE. In 13 out of 25 (52%) patients, PSE was performed under emergency conditions due to persistent EVH and GVH, clearly stopping the bleeding. Follow-up gastroscopy showed a significant regression of esophageal and gastric varices, classified as grade II or lower according to Paquet’s classification after PSE in comparison to grade III to IV before PSE. During the follow-up period, no variceal re-bleeding occurred, neither in patients who were treated under emergency conditions nor in patients with non-emergency PSE. Furthermore, platelet count increased starting from day one after PSE, and after one week, thrombocyte levels had improved significantly. After six months, there was a sustained increase in the thrombocyte count at significantly higher levels. Fever, abdominal pain, and an increase in leucocyte count were transient side effects of the procedure. Severe complications were not observed. Conclusion This is the first study analyzing the efficacy of emergency and non-emergency PSE for the treatment of gastroesophageal hemorrhage and recurrent portal hypertensive gastropathy bleeding in patients with CPH and NCPH. We show that PSE is a successful rescue therapy for patients in whom pharmacological and endoscopic treatment options fail and the placement of a TIPS is contraindicated. In critically ill CPH and NCPH patients with fulminant gastroesophageal variceal bleeding, PSE showed good results and is therefore an effective tool for the rescue and emergency management of gastroesophageal hemorrhage.

The present study examines the harmful energy role of Social Engineering through the parallels between the regulatory circuit of control theory and the operating model of Social Engineering. The result of the study highlights the importance of cyber defense.

The development of Self-Driving cars has had two main approaches, the vehicle as an individual object, allowing it to perceive the environment and react to it, and seeing it as part of an autonomous system (smart city) where the environment is responsible for identifying all components and providing timely activation. Internet of Things technologies can drastically improve the capabilities of the autonomous vehicle to better understand its environment with the interconnection of the surrounding elements. The findings from the development of the Internet of Things in autonomous cars are more intelligent mobility with higher levels of safety (for passengers and pedestrians), efficiency (allowing drivers to avoid traffic congestion and facilitating their search for parking), and sustainability (through reduced fuel consumption.). This article reviews advances on the Internet of Things and how it has changed the industry. Aspects in the development of intelligent cities result from implementing the Internet of Things.

Highlights of right ventricular characteristics of left ventricular noncompaction using 3D echocardiography.The aspects of right ventricular volumes and function investigated with 3D echocardiography in a large cohort of left ventricular noncompaction morphology (LVNC) population remains unclear.The objective of our research was to study the left (LV) and right (RV) ventricular parameters using 3D echocardiography and analyze the clinical features of a LVNC population with preserved LV ejection fraction (EF > 50 %) in comparison with healthy controls (HC).We selected 41 LVNC subjects with preserved LV function (EF: 52.91 ± 3 %, male n = 26) and without any comorbidities and compared them with an age and sex-matched HC. Three dimensional endocardial contours were evaluated to determine the following LV and RV parameters: end-diastolic (EDV) and end-systolic (ESV) volumes, stroke volume, EF, LV global longitudinal and circumferential strain and RV septal and free wall longitudinal strain.Regarding the clinical characteristics, the family involvement had a notable proportion, accounting for 51%. The EF and strain values of the LVNC population were significantly decreased in both RV and LV compared to HC. Although the LV volumes of the LVNC group were significantly elevated, the RV volumetric parameters did not differ significantly compared to controls. We found significant correlations between LV and RV volumetric and functional parameters and linear regression models showed that LV EDV and LV ESV determined the RV volumetric values.While the alteration and relationship of the RV parameters may represent the potential of biventricular involvement, clinical characteristics of the LVNC group underlines the necessity of monitoring this population, even with preserved EF.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the efficiency of using allografts for sinus lift. Materials and Methods: This systematic review was written under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and recommendation of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Three electronic databases were screened until October 2023. The risk of bias was assessed according to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. Statistical analysis was performed for median bone volume and implant survival rate. Results: From 321 articles retrieved, 7 articles were included in this review. A comparison between freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) and deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) for mean bone volume indicated a weighted mean difference (WMD) of −0.17 [−0.69, 0.36] (95% confidence interval (CI)), p = 0.53. For implant survival rate, a comparison was made between FDBA and autogenous bone indicating a risk ratio (RR) of 1.00 [0.96, 1.05] (95% CI), p = 1.00. Conclusions: The available evidence suggested that allograft bone can be used in sinus lift procedures. The results obtained are insufficient to compare with other types of bone graft, requiring a longer follow-up time. Future clinical trials are needed in order to evaluate the advantages of using allograft bone.

Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein (IGFBP)-2 is a regulator of anabolic pathways, which become inactivated in severe illness. Here, we measured the serum IGFBP-2 levels of COVID-19 patients with moderate and severe disease as well as healthy controls to identify the associations of serum IGFBP-2 levels with disease severity. Patients with severe COVID-19 had higher serum IGFBP-2 levels than those with moderate disease and healthy controls, who had similar levels. Non-survivors of COVID-19 tended to have elevated serum IGFBP-2 levels compared to survivors. Increased serum IGFBP-2 levels were observed in patients requiring dialysis and vasopressor therapy. Serum IGFBP-2 was positively correlated with procalcitonin in both patient groups. Bacterial co-infection in severe COVID-19 patients did not influence serum IGFBP-2 levels. Patients with liver cirrhosis and obesity, showing increased and decreased serum IGFBP-2 levels, respectively, were excluded from the study. The present analysis showed that higher serum IGFBP-2 levels are associated with increased disease severity in COVID-19 patients. The similarity in serum IGFBP-2 levels between patients with moderate COVID-19 and healthy controls suggests that elevated IGFBP-2 is associated with critical illness rather than SARS-CoV-2 infection itself.

A powerful feature used in automated malware analysis is the static call graph of the executable file. Elimination of sandbox environment, fast scan, function call patterns beyond instruction level information – all of these motivate the prevalence of the feature. Processing and storing the static call graph of malicious samples in a scaled manner facilitates the application of complex network analysis in malware research. IDA Pro is one of the leading disassembler tools in the industry and can generate the call graph via GenCallGdl and GenFuncGdl APIs – a tool which was used in our previous works. In this paper an alternative analysis method is presented using another disassembler tool, Radare2, an open-source Unix-based software, which is also frequently used in this domain. Radare2 has Python support (among other languages), via the r2pipe package, thus enabling full scalability on Linux-based servers using containerized solutions. This paper offers a detailed technical description on how to use Radare2 to generate the static call graph of a PE file and a thorough comparison with the output of IDA Pro, as well as a public dataset on which the experiments were carried out.

The impact factor of scientific journals and the h-index depend on the citations. Therefore, the citation analysis is a very important part of scientometrics. The paper presents the 2022 ranking list of citation analysis researchers. The ranking is presented primarily according to the h-index of researchers. The advantage the h-index is that it combines both the quantity - number of articles and quality - citations to these articles. A researcher cannot have a high h-index without publishing a considerable number of articles. The h-index favors researchers that publish a continuous stream of articles. Researchers with the same h-index are ranked by the number of citations. The minimum h-index of the 10 ranked researchers is 26. h-index can be determined from the following online databases: Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar and the Publish or Perish program. The ranking is edited using the Google Scholar database.

From the period of the Neanderthals to those of the Late Neolithic populations, the Bükk Mountains region played an important part in the lives of various prehistoric societies, and the varied geological history of this territory provided distinct circumstances for the production of stone implements. The major goal of our research is to outline the current state of information concerning the prehistoric use of the diverse silicified source materials of the Bükk mountains. The results of these studies are presented concerning four selected local rock types, cited in the archaeological literature as the silicified sandstone of Egerbakta, the radiolarite and hornstone (black chert), the silicified marlstone and the quartz-porphyry (metarhyolite). Except for the latter, little attention has previously been paid to studying them in detail. Our new petrographic analyses revealed two variants of the raw material from Egerbakta: a silicified sandstone and a diatomaceous detrital chert. The other samples turned out to be radiolarites. This result confirmed what was already suggested for the hornstones (black cherts), however, it has new consequences for the “silicified marlstone”. Regarding the prehistoric use of the selected raw materials, archaeological data show interesting dynamics through time. The Mousterian groups of the region used a large spectrum of rocks for lithic tools with a preference for hornstone (black cherts) and radiolarite in the southern part, and the quartz-porphyry (metarhyolite) in the northeastern part. The Bábonyian/Micoquian assemblages are characterized by a bifacial toolkit and an apparent preference for quartz-porphyry (metarhyolite). At the beginning of the Upper Palaeolithic, a new attitude appears in the region: the Aurignacian groups almost completely ignored local sources. During the Neolithization of the Carpathian Basin, the lithic assemblages of the Alföld Linear Pottery culture became more and more habituated to the locally available rock types, albeit their raw material economy was based on limnosilicites and obsidian. Another change took place during the Late Neolithic when supra-regional sources became dominant over local or regional sources.

Analysis of clinically approved antibody-based therapeutics reveals different structural designs, such as full-length IgG1 or Fc-fusions, entail distinct biophysical properties that affect FcRn binding, intracellular transport and plasma half-life.

Creating climate-neutral electronic communications is a shared responsibility for the industry and urgent action is needed in the face of warming trends due to global climate change. Despite this, environmental sustainability in the regulation of the electronic communications sector in Hungary has not yet received sufficient attention, nor has there been any related research, articles or studies. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to fill this gap, to review the relevant international, EU and domestic regulatory situation and trends, to provide a comprehensive and high-level picture of sustainability initiatives in the electronic communications sector and to evaluate it in order to suggest possible directions for domestic regulatory action. It is hoped that this will serve as a starting point for launching a discourse in the industry and for properly positioning the green transition in electronic communications regulation.

Upregulation of surface expressed sialoglycans on tumor cells is one of the mechanisms which promote tumor growth and progression. Specifically, the interactions of sialic acids with sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectins (Siglecs) on lymphoid or myeloid cells transmit inhibitory signals and lead to suppression of anti-tumor responses. Here, we show that neutrophils express among others Siglec-9, and that EGFR and HER2 positive breast tumor cells express ligands for Siglec-9. Treatment of tumor cells with neuraminidases or a sialyl transferase inhibitor significantly reduced binding of a soluble recombinant Siglec-9-Fc fusion protein, while EGFR and HER2 expression remained unchanged. Importantly, the cytotoxic activity of neutrophils driven by therapeutic EGFR or HER2 antibodies in vitro was increased by blocking the sialic acid/Siglec interaction, either by reducing tumor cell sialylation or by a Siglec-9 blocking antibody containing an effector silenced Fc domain. In vivo a short-term xenograft mouse model confirmed the improved therapeutic efficacy of EGFR antibodies against sialic acid depleted, by a sialyltransferase inhibitor, tumor cells compared to untreated cells. Our studies demonstrate that sialic acid/Siglec interactions between tumor cells and myeloid cells can impair antibody dependent tumor cell killing, and that Siglec-9 on polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) is critically involved. Considering that PMN are often a highly abundant cell population in the tumor microenvironment, Siglec-9 constitutes a promising target for myeloid checkpoint blockade to improve antibody-based tumor immunotherapy.

Abstract Introduction Remote smartphone assessments of cognition, speech/language, and motor functioning in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) could enable decentralized clinical trials and improve access to research. We studied the feasibility and acceptability of remote smartphone data collection in FTD research using the ALLFTD Mobile App (ALLFTD‐mApp). Methods A diagnostically mixed sample of 214 participants with FTD or from familial FTD kindreds (asymptomatic: CDR®+NACC‐FTLD = 0 [N = 101]; prodromal: 0.5 [N = 49]; symptomatic ≥1 [N = 51]; not measured [N = 13]) were asked to complete ALLFTD‐mApp tests on their smartphone three times within 12 days. They completed smartphone familiarity and participation experience surveys. Results It was feasible for participants to complete the ALLFTD‐mApp on their own smartphones. Participants reported high smartphone familiarity, completed ∼ 70% of tasks, and considered the time commitment acceptable (98% of respondents). Greater disease severity was associated with poorer performance across several tests. Discussion These findings suggest that the ALLFTD‐mApp study protocol is feasible and acceptable for remote FTD research. HIGHLIGHTS The ALLFTD Mobile App is a smartphone‐based platform for remote, self‐administered data collection. The ALLFTD Mobile App consists of a comprehensive battery of surveys and tests of executive functioning, memory, speech and language, and motor abilities. Remote digital data collection using the ALLFTD Mobile App was feasible in a multicenter research consortium that studies FTD. Data was collected in healthy controls and participants with a range of diagnoses, particularly FTD spectrum disorders. Remote digital data collection was well accepted by participants with a variety of diagnoses.

Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein (IGFBP)-2 regulates the bioactivity of the anabolic hormone’s insulin-like growth factors, which are decreased in sepsis and contribute to the catabolic status of severely ill patients. The circulating levels of IGFBP-2 in critical illness have been rarely studied; therefore, we evaluated IGFBP-2 plasma levels in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or sepsis as well as healthy controls. Our analysis of 157 SIRS/sepsis patients revealed higher plasma IGFBP-2 levels compared to 22 healthy controls. Plasma IGFBP-2 levels correlated positively with procalcitonin but not with C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, or the leukocyte count. Septic shock patients exhibited higher IGFBP-2 levels than those with SIRS. Bacterial or SARS-CoV-2 infection did not influence plasma IGFBP-2 levels. There was no difference in the IGFBP-2 levels between ventilated and non-ventilated SIRS/sepsis patients, and vasopressor therapy did not alter these levels. Dialysis patients had elevated plasma IGFBP-2 levels. Survivors had lower plasma IGFBP-2 levels than non-survivors. In conclusion, our study indicates that plasma IGFBP-2 levels are associated with disease severity, renal failure, and mortality in SIRS/sepsis patients.

Adiponectin is low in obesity, plays a crucial role in metabolic health, and, moreover, possesses immunoregulatory properties. However, studies examining its levels in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or sepsis have yielded conflicting results. While females typically have higher systemic adiponectin levels than males, research on sex-specific associations in this context is limited. In this study of 156 SIRS/sepsis patients, including those with liver cirrhosis, we aimed to explore the relationship between plasma adiponectin, body mass index (BMI), gender, disease severity, and underlying etiological conditions. Our findings revealed that patients with liver cirrhosis, who are susceptible to infections, exhibited elevated circulating adiponectin levels, irrespective of sex. When excluding cirrhosis patients, plasma adiponectin levels were similar between male SIRS/sepsis patients and controls but lower in female patients compared to female controls. Plasma adiponectin was inversely related to BMI in female but not male patients. Further analysis within the non-cirrhosis subgroup demonstrated no significant differences in adiponectin levels between sexes among SIRS, sepsis, and septic shock patients. Ventilation, dialysis, and vasopressor therapy had no discernible impact on adiponectin levels in either sex. A negative correlation between adiponectin and C-reactive protein (CRP) existed in males only. Notably, patients with pancreatitis showed the lowest plasma adiponectin concentrations, although sex-specific differences were not significant. Infection with Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria had minimal effects on plasma adiponectin levels in both sexes. However, infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 led to decreased adiponectin levels in females exclusively. Multivariate analysis considering all factors affecting plasma adiponectin levels in males or females identified BMI in females and CRP levels in males to predict plasma adiponectin levels in SIRS/sepsis patients. Additionally, our study observed a trend where the 25 patients who did not survive had higher plasma adiponectin levels, particularly among males. In summary, our investigation highlights the influence of underlying diseases and sex on plasma adiponectin levels in SIRS/sepsis patients, shedding light on potential implications for disease management and prognosis.

T cell depletion and functional impairment are characteristics of sepsis. CD137 is a costimulatory receptor on activated T cells, while soluble CD137 (sCD137) inhibits CD137 signaling. This study found elevated sCD137 levels in the plasma of patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), sepsis, or septic shock compared to healthy controls. The sCD137 levels negatively correlated with the C-reactive protein and positively with procalcitonin and interleukin-6. There was no difference in sCD137 levels based on ventilation, dialysis, or vasopressor treatment. Patients with SARS-CoV-2, Gram-positive, or Gram-negative bacterial infections had similar sCD137 levels as noninfected individuals. Notably, higher plasma sCD137 levels were observed in non-survivors compared to survivors in both the SIRS/sepsis group and the SARS-CoV-2 subgroup. In conclusion, plasma sCD137 levels are associated with severe illness and survival in critically ill patients.

Despite the widespread use of doxorubicin (DOX) as a chemotherapeutic agent, its severe cumulative cardiotoxicity represents a significant limitation. While the liposomal encapsulation of doxorubicin (Myocet, MYO) reduces cardiotoxicity, it is crucial to understand the molecular background of doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. Here, we examined circular RNA expression in a translational model of pigs treated with either DOX or MYO and its potential impact on the global gene expression pattern in the myocardium. This study furthers our knowledge about the regulatory network of circRNA/miRNA/mRNA and its interaction with chemotherapeutics. Domestic pigs were treated with three cycles of anthracycline drugs (DOX, n = 5; MYO, n = 5) to induce cardiotoxicity. Untreated animals served as controls (control, n = 3). We applied a bulk mRNA-seq approach and the CIRIquant algorithm to identify circRNAs. The most differentially regulated circRNAs were validated under cell culture conditions, following forecasting of the circRNA–miRNA–mRNA network. We identified eight novel significantly regulated circRNAs from exonic and mitochondrial regions in the porcine myocardium. The forecasted circRNA–miRNA–mRNA network suggested candidate circRNAs that sponge miR-17, miR-15b, miR-130b, the let-7 family, and miR125, together with their mRNA targets. The identified circRNA–miRNA–mRNA network provides an updated, coherent view of the mechanisms involved in anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity.

The increasing number of visitors and conflicts resulting from shared use in valorising sensitive wetlands make effective visitor and site management measures essential. In the course of this research, the landscape pattern, the current spatial distribution of tourist activities and the possible arrangement of expedient further development were examined. The study area, Lake Tisza, is an artificial lowland reservoir established in the 1970s with an area of 127 km2 in Hungary. Among its original functions, in addition to flood control, nature conservation and recreation have become the main profiles. The diverse hydro-ecological features and mosaic landscape structure allow for nature conservation and utilisation in tourism. This differentiated use is in line with the worldwide trend of favouring locations with multiple leisure activities in close proximity to each other. Based on the CORINE Land Cover (CLC) 2018 database, 12 different land use categories were identified in the study area. The largest proportion is represented by water bodies (53.29%), while inland marshes and broad-leaved forests cover 22.25% and 16.64%, respectively. The heterogeneity of the area is considerably enhanced by the high patch sizes of the categories pastures, broad-leaved forests and inland marshes. According to the Shannon diversity index, the most complex landscape diversity can be found in the Tiszavalk (1.5) and Poroszló (1.4) basins, considered to be the most suitable for ecotourism, while the lower values of the Sarud (1.1) and Abadszalók (1.1) basins provide suitable conditions for water sport activities and recreational tourism. Continuous adaptation to social needs and the joint protection of natural values is crucial for the sustainable development of Lake Tisza.

The pathological effects of two sublethal concentrations (100 µg/l and 250 µg/l) of copper (CuSO4x5H2O) on goldfish Carassius auratus gibelio were studied for 7,14 and 21 days. The specific activity of LDH in gills and intestine, two target organs that uptake the metal from the water were assayed. In gills at 100 µg Cu2+/l the specific activity of LDH was gradually decreasing, while in the intestine, after 7 days of exposure, the enzymatic activity was distinct significantly increased. LDH activity demonstrated a hypoxic condition and a stimulation of glycolysis. In the both organs ,the 250 µg Cu2+/l concentration generated a decrease of LDH specific activity after 7 days followed by an increase of this after 14 and 21 days of exposure. Histologically, the modifications are, generally, directly correlated with the toxicant dose and exposure time.

In this research, contamination levels and the spatial pattern identification, as well as human and environmental health risk assessments of the heavy metals in the phreatic groundwater aquifer of the Oued Souf Valley were investigated for the first time. The applied methodology comprised a combination of heavy-metal pollution indices, inverse distance weighting, and human health risk assessment through water ingestion on samples collected from (14) monitoring wells. The contamination trend in the phreatic aquifer showed Al > B > Sr > Mn > Fe > Pb > Ni > Cr > Ba > Cu > Zn. Similarly, the enrichment trend was Al > B > Sr > Mn > Ni > Pb > Cr > Ba > Cu > Zn. Ecologically, most of the analyzed metals reflected a low potential ecological risk, except for two wells, S13 and S14, which represented a considerable and high ecological risk in terms of Pb. According to the applied grouping method, the samples in the first group indicated a lower risk of contamination in terms of heavy metals due to their lower concentration compared to the second group. This makes the area containing the second group’s samples more vulnerable in terms of heavy metals, which could affect urban, preurban, and even agricultural areas. All of the samples (100%) indicated the possibility of potential health risks in the case of children. While six samples showed that the non-cancer toxicity risk is considered low, the rest of the samples had high Hazard Index (HI) values, indicating the possibility of health risks occurring in the case of adults. The constructed vertical drainage system is acting as a supporter and accelerator of the pollution levels in the shallow groundwater aquifer. This is due to its contribution to the penetration of different pollutants into this aquifer system, depending on the residence time of the water, which appears to be long within the drainage system.
