Abstract Integrative taxonomy of Diamesus Hope, 1840 (Coleoptera: Silphinae) is presented. Adults of D. bimaculatus Portevin, 1914 (endemic to Taiwan) and D. osculans (Vigors, 1825) (widely distributed from northern India to Australia) are redescribed, keyed and figured, including characters of the male and female genitalia of both species. Variation in elytral maculation in D. osculans is discussed and illustrated. The absence of diagnostic differences of D. osculans var. reductus Pic, 1917 from D. osculans is discussed, and the former name is confirmed as a junior subjective synonym of D. osculans. Types of all three names available were studied; a lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for the name D. osculans var. bimaculatus Portevin, 1914. Molecular phylogenetic analysis confirms the genus Diamesus is sister group to the genus Necrodes Leach, 1815, and D. osculans and D. bimaculatus are two, well supported clades. Detailed data on the distribution of D. bimaculatus and D. osculans are presented and mapped. Species distribution models for both species were created and interpreted. Diamesus osculans is reported for the first time from India: Uttarakhand, China: Anhui, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Zhejiang Provinces, and Australia: Victoria; it is also recently confirmed from Taiwan, being sympatric in distribution there with D. bimaculatus. Available data on the ecology and seasonality of both species of Diamesus are also discussed.

This study investigates the influence of local hybridization of Thin and Thick-Ply CFRP laminates on the open-hole and bearing properties. The area weight of the CFRP unidirectional prepregs used is 40 gsm in the case of Thin-Ply layers and 160 gsm in the case of Thick-Ply layers. The steel used is a 1.4310 stainless-steel foil with the same layer thickness as the prepregs. In the hybrid area, 90∘ layers were locally replaced by stainless steel patches. The local metal foil content varies from 6.25%, 12.5% to 25.0%. For notched laminates, the open hole tensile strength is significantly decreased with thinner layer thicknesses. The failure behavior changes from complex delamination dominated failure to brittle failure. By using stainless steel foils in the regions of stress concentrations, energy can be dissipated by plastic deformation of the steel foil and stresses can be deflected to neighbouring areas. For Thin-Ply samples with a local steel content of 25% the open hole tensile strength increases by 64% in comparison to the reference Thin-Ply specimens and the sensitivity towards stress concentrations decreases. The bearing strength of the hybrid CFRP laminates is increased by up to 54.6% in comparison to the reference material, due to the confinement of the steel foil and the resulting higher compressive strength and the plastic deformation at high stresses. The stress–strain diagrams and micrographs of the fibre metal samples reveal that damage is initiated before the maximum bearing strength. However, the damage offset bearing strength increase concerning the specific density of the material significantly.

The species belonging to the genus Ptomaphagus Hellwig, 1795 (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae, Ptomaphagini) from eastern Asia are assigned to three species groups. Group yasutoshii has a single species: P. (s. str.) yasutoshii Nishikawa, 1993 from Taiwan, China. Group nepalensis with three species: P. (s. str.) nepalensis Perreau, 1988 from Nepal and P. (s. str.) masumotoi Nishikawa, 2011 from Thailand are redescribed, and P. (s. str.) piccoloi Wang, Růžička, Nishikawa, Perreau & Hayashi, 2016 is recorded for the first time from China (Zhejiang). Group sibiricus with seven species, including two newly described Chinese ones P. (s. str.) funiu sp. n. from Henan, and P. (s. str.) haba sp. n. from Yunnan, and five known species: P. (s. str.) chenggongi Wang, Nishikawa, Perreau, Růžička & Hayashi, 2016, P. (s. str.) hayashii Wang, Růžička, Perreau, Nishikawa & Park, 2016, P. (s. str.) kuntzeni Sokolowski, 1957 (distribution records from Myanmar excluded), P. (s. str.) sibiricus Jeannel, 1934 and P. (s. str.) tingtingtae Wang, Nishikawa, Perreau, Růžička & Hayashi, 2016. Specimens of other undescribed species of the group sibiricus are also recorded, revealing a high diversity of this genus in eastern Asia, especially in central and north Sichuan, China, which essentially remains to be investigated. Relevant morphological characters of the examined species are illustrated with colour plates, and their known distributions are mapped. A key to species of Ptomaphagus from eastern Asia is provided.

The conundrum of Ptomaphagus (s. str.) sibiricus Jeannel, 1934 (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae, Ptomaphagini) is solved, and it is redescribed and newly recorded in South Korea. A new species is also described from the Russian Far East: P. (s. str.) hayashii sp. n. Relevant morphological characters of the concerned species are illustrated with colour plates, and their known distributions are mapped.

Formulation based on the eigenfunction expansion is shown for second-harmonic generation simulations at a cylindrical interface. The displacement potentials of fundamental wave fields and second-harmonic fields are expressed as sums of eigenfunctions. The cylinder-matrix interface is assumed to be imperfect and modeled as a nonlinear spring interface for the purpose of considering roughness of the interface. Nonlinear equations in this model are dealt with the perturbation theory. The relational expression on the expansion coefficients of the fundamental waves and the second harmonics is shown. The results for the P wave incidence are demonstrated; although arbitrary incident wave field is available in the present method. As a result, both P and SV second harmonics are generated at the cylindrical interface. The numerical results for the directivity patterns of second harmonics are also given. The results show that the directivity patterns depend on the interfacial stiffness. Moreover the relationships between the interfacial stiffness and the ratio of stress in forward direction to backward direction are investigated in order to discuss the interfacial stiffness dependence in detail. The ratio significantly varies with the interfacial stiffness and the relationships are different by the frequency of the incident wave. Due to these characteristics, the ratio of stress in forward direction to backward direction can be useful for the evaluation of the interfacial stiffness. The influence of the ratio of the transverse stiffness to normal stiffness on the ratio of stress is also demonstrated. It is shown that the ratio of the interfacial stiffness has little effect on the ratio of stress.
