This paper presents the results obtained regarding the control by manufacturers of the percentage, shape, and size of the precipitated graphite in the working layer of duplex work-rolls used in hot strip mill finishing stands. This working layer is manufactured in a martensitic white cast iron alloyed with Cr and Nb to promote the precipitation of M3C and MC carbides, which provide a high wear resistance. The thermal cycling behavior of this layer also has a decisive influence on its service life. In this context, the percentage of graphite and its morphology play a very important role against said thermal cycling. With the aim of studying their effect on the sphericity of graphite, the analyzed industrial manufacturing factors worth highlighting include the liquidus temperature, the %Si, the use of an FeSi inoculant with traces of Lanthanum, inoculation with different amounts of FeB and SiCaMn, and the addition of Mg. At the periphery of the working layer, it was found that the use of the FeSi inoculant with traces of La promoted an increase in the density of counts of graphite, and that inoculation with FeB and the addition of 0.02% Mg diminished the nodularity of the graphite. Furthermore, throughout the entire thickness of the working layer, an increase in the amount of SiCaMn of up to 0.6 kg/T produced an increase in the size of the graphite particles and a marked improvement in their nodularity.

The translation of mechanical cues into gene expression changes is dependent on the nuclear import of mechanoresponsive transcriptional regulators. Mechanical forces are sensed by cells and can alter plasma membrane properties, but biochemical changes underlying this are not clear. Here the authors show tension is sensed by c-Abl and FBP17, which couples changes in mechanical tension to remodelling of the plasma membrane and actin cytoskeleton.

Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV) (genus Carmovirus, family Tombusviridae) is a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus that has become an experimental model for the analysis of cell-to-cell virus movement and translation of uncapped viral RNAs, whereas little is known about its replication. Analysis of the cytopathology after MNSV infection showed the specific presence of modified organelles that resemble mitochondria. Immunolocalization of the glycine decarboxylase complex (GDC) P protein in these organelles confirmed their mitochondrial origin. In situ hybridization and immunolocalization experiments showed the specific localization of positive-sense viral RNA, capsid protein (CP), and double-stranded (ds)RNA in these organelles meaning that replication of the virus takes place in association with them. The three-dimensional reconstructions of the altered mitochondria showed the presence of large, interconnected, internal dilations which appeared to be linked to the outside cytoplasmic environment through pores and/or complex structures, and with lipid bodies. Transient expression of MNSV p29 revealed that its specific target is mitochondria. Our data document the extensive reorganization of host mitochondria induced by MNSV, which provides a protected environment to viral replication, and show that the MNSV p29 protein is the primary determinant of this effect in the host.

The major goal of animal production is to obtain abundant and healthy meat for consumers. Maternal food restriction (MFR) is often applied in farms to reduce production costs. However, the suitability of MFR in livestock animals is questionable, as this management may compromise maternal fitness due to a severe negative energetic balance and can induce Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and prenatal programming in the offspring. Here, we sought to determine, using pregnant rabbits, the consequences of MFR on maternal endocrine and metabolic status and conceptus development. Pregnant dams were distributed into three groups: CONTROL (ad libitum feeding throughout the entire pregnancy; mean pregnancy length being around 31 days), UNDERFED (50% MFR during the entire pregnancy) and EARLY-UNDERFED (50% MFR only during the preimplantation period, Days 0-7). Maternal leptin concentrations and glycemic and lipid profiles were determined throughout pregnancy, whilst conceptus development was assessed ex-vivo at Day 28.
