Chile has six species of Mecoptera, among which is Anabittacus iridipennis Kimmins, 1929. The genus Anabittacus Kimmins, 1929 (family Bittacidae) is monotypic and highly endemic to the southern part of the country. Here, we report two new localities for the rare A. iridipennis in southern Chile, specifically in the Los Ríos Region. Our new data extend the northern geographical limits of this species from the locality type. We provide a detailed diagnosis of this species and notes about the biology and the habitat of this enigmatic species.

El presente trabajo fue realizado en la Estación Científica Pedro Franco Dávila, ubicada en el Recinto de Jauneche, Provincia de Los Ríos, en la costa de Ecuador. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue estimar la riqueza de anuros en esta Estación Científica y presentar una pequeña descripción morfológica externa de cada especie encontrada. Se realizaron seis visitas, desde mayo hasta agosto del 2015, la estimación del esfuerzo de captura fue de 69.600 horas-metros. La metodología utilizada fue de procedimientos básicos (directo – indirecto); el directo se basó en la búsqueda intensiva por encuentro visual, en el indirecto se utilizó el método de pitfall. Así mismo, se realizaron recorridos diurnos y nocturnos en sendas preexistentes y recorridos perpendiculares a los senderos desde 5 a 30 metros por los lados de los senderos. Se registraron 86 especies de anuros pertenecientes a 5 familias, 13 géneros y 12 especies. De las especies reportadas la de mayor riqueza es para la familia Craugastoridae con 50 individuos y la especie dominante fue Pristimantis achatinus. Se registraron las familias Leptodactylidae, Hylidae, Craugastoridae, Bufonidae, Dendrobatidae.

Once the projects to change the productive and energy matrix in Ecuador have started, it is understandable that the country now aims at an efficient, innovative, with high quality and environmentally friendly production. Therefore the need for a social, labor and academic study must be set in the career of Environmental Engineering focused on Region 5. The work presented in this article involved a quantitative and qualitative research. The first was focused on companies in the agricultural and industrial sector of region 5 and the second was directed to experts. In both cases the objectives aimed to determine the necessity of environmental engineers in the region 5, the profile of the graduates for an eventual career and the academic and infrastructure requirements for the success of the career and the graduates. The results encourage the creation of a career in Environmental Engineering, because there is currently a need for at least 2454 professionals. It was also noted that the University should aim to generate links with key stakeholders for the new career to be successful and fulfill its social purpose
