Introduction Over the past decade, the growth of accelerated three-year MD (3YMD) programs has flourished. In 2015, with support from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Consortium of Medical Pathway Programs (CAMPP) started with eight North American medical schools. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the current state of the 3YMD programs.Material and Methods Since 2015, the CAMPP has tracked new and prospective 3YMD programs. An electronic survey collecting curricular and programmatic information about the programs was disseminated to all members of the CAMPP in August 2023. The survey included elements related to year of initiation, number of graduates, and curricular elements.Results Of the schools with known established three-year MD programs, 29 of 32 programs responded (response rate 90%). There is growth of Accelerated Medical Pathway Programs over time with almost 20% of United States Allopathic Medical Schools having or developing an accelerated program. There have been 817 graduates from these programs from 2013–2023. Most schools include an opportunity for a ‘directed pathway’ experience for students. A directed pathway is where a student completes the MD degree in three-years and then has a direct placement into an affiliated residency program, provided they meet the goals and objectives of the curriculum. Most of the schools report a mission to reduce medical student debt and build a workforce for a specialty, for a population of patients, or geographical distribution.Conclusions Accelerated three-year medical pathway programs have grown significantly over the last decade, consistent with an overall effort to redesign medical curricula, reduce debt and contribute to the workforce.

Medical students have self-reported the importance of online resources for learning course materials and for preparing for USMLE exams. However, reports describing the actual usage of online resources by medical students are less abundant. In this article, we report the actual usage of institutionally-provided online resources by first-year students from the Medical College of Wisconsin-Central Wisconsin (MCW-CW) regional campus. From 2017 through 2022, different cohorts of first-year students were provided access to three different online supplemental resources: Draw It to Know It (DITKI), Osmosis and Anatomy.TV (powered by Primal Pictures). Most of the students in the study accessed one or more online resources, but the extent to which students accessed each of these materials was highly variable. Based on self-reported data we expected more students to use these resources to a greater degree. Our results suggest that rather than purchasing institutional licenses to online resources, institutional funds might be better used in another manner, possibly by providing students a scholarship/stipend towards an individual license to an online resource for which the student can provide evidence of extensive use.

Introduction Telemedicine is a growing practice with minimal training in US medical schools. Telemedicine OSCE (TeleOSCE) simulations allow students to practice this type of patient interaction in a standardized way. Methods The Insomnia–Rural TeleOSCE was implemented as part of a required clinical clerkship for students in their second, third, or fourth year of medical school. This case addressed a patient with depression in a medically underserved area. Students performed it as a formative experience and received immediate feedback. They then completed a survey to evaluate the experience. Results Students (n = 287) rated the quality of the experience 7.59 out of 10. Comments showed that 61 learners thought the TeleOSCE was a positive experience, 35 wanted more teaching about telemedicine, 28 improved their understanding of barriers to care, 25 expressed concern over minimal other training, 23 found the TeleOSCE important and challenging, 16 appreciated the differences between in-person and remote visits, and 15 wanted fewer distractions. Eight students worried about how they would be judged, five learned from the technical limitations, five requested more time, five were skeptical of the utility, and five saw telemedicine as triage. Discussion The TeleOSCE allows learners to gain exposure to telemedicine in a safe simulated teaching environment and assesses learner competencies. The TeleOSCE also improves students’ understanding of barriers to care and the utility of telemedicine. It logistically allows faculty to directly assess distance students on their clinical reasoning and patient communication skills.
