Abstract Background Prospective data from sub-Saharan Africa suggests that treatment outcomes for people living with HIV (PWH) with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are similar to those without HIV. However, real-world data from high-resource settings and retrospective studies from sub-Saharan Africa, suggest inferior outcomes. We set out to evaluate the real-world treatment outcomes for HL in South Africa to better understand the disparate outcomes. Methods We established a prospective, observational cohort of newly diagnosed, adult (≥ 18 years) HL cases recruited from Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic and Netcare Olivedale Hospitals in Johannesburg, South Africa between March 2021 and March 2023. Participants were followed for up to 18 months after enrollment with data censored on December 23rd, 2023. The primary endpoint was 1-year overall survival. Results We enrolled 47 participants with HL including 31 PWH and 16 HIV-negative. Advanced stage disease and B symptoms were common at time of diagnosis irrespective of HIV status. Bone marrow biopsy, performed during the work-up and evaluation of cytopenias, provided the initial diagnosis of HL in 16/31 (52%) PWH. HIV status and bone marrow involvement were associated with early mortality (within 3 months of diagnosis) and a poorer 1-year overall survival from diagnosis (HIV: 55% vs. 88%; p = 0.03; bone marrow involvement: 50% vs. 80%; p = 0.02). Among evaluable participants, those that received at least 6 cycles of chemotherapy and underwent response assessment, there was no difference between those with and without HIV. Conclusion Traditional laboratory markers of poor prognosis including anemia, lymphopenia and hypoalbuminemia were more common among PWH and those with bone marrow involvement and suggest high risk disease. A better understanding of the drivers of these aggressive presentations is warranted to ensure more PWH are able to tolerate chemotherapy.

Objectives Pragmatic randomised controlled trials (pRCTs) are essential for determining the real-world safety and effectiveness of healthcare interventions. However, both laypeople and clinicians often demonstrate experiment aversion: preferring to implement either of two interventions for everyone rather than comparing them to determine which is best. We studied whether clinician and layperson views of pRCTs for COVID-19, as well as non-COVID-19, interventions became more positive during the pandemic, which increased both the urgency and public discussion of pRCTs.Design Randomised survey experiments.Setting Geisinger, a network of hospitals and clinics in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, USA; Amazon Mechanical Turk, a research participant platform used to recruit online participants residing across the USA. Data were collected between August 2020 and February 2021.Participants 2149 clinicians (the types of people who conduct or make decisions about conducting pRCTs) and 2909 laypeople (the types of people who are included in pRCTs as patients). The clinician sample was primarily female (81%), comprised doctors (15%), physician assistants (9%), registered nurses (54%) and other medical professionals, including other nurses, genetic counsellors and medical students (23%), and the majority of clinicians (62%) had more than 10 years of experience. The layperson sample ranges in age from 18 to 88 years old (mean=38, SD=13) and the majority were white (75%) and female (56%).Outcome measures Participants read vignettes in which a hypothetical decision-maker who sought to improve health could choose to implement intervention A for all, implement intervention B for all, or experimentally compare A and B and implement the superior intervention. Participants rated and ranked the appropriateness of each decision. Summary: Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are implied in blood–brain barrier degradation and haemorrhagic transformation following ischaemic stroke, but their local relevance in the hyperacute disease phase is unknown. We aimed to examine ultra-early MMP-9 and MMP-2 release into collateral blood vessels, and to assess its prognostic value before therapeutic recanalisation by endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). Methods: We report a cross-sectional proof-of-concept study including patients undergoing EVT for large-vessel ischaemic stroke at the University Hospital Würzburg, Germany. We obtained liquid biopsies from the collateral circulation before recanalisation, and systemic control samples. Laboratory workup included quantification of MMP-9 and MMP-2 plasma concentrations by cytometric bead array, immunohistochemical analyses of cellular MMP-9 and MMP-2 expression, and detection of proteolytic activity by gelatine zymography. The clinical impact of MMP concentrations was assessed by stratification according to intracranial haemorrhagic lesions on postinterventional computed tomography (Heidelberg Bleeding Classification, HBC) and early functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale, mRS). We used multivariable logistic regression, receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curves, and fixed-level estimates of test accuracy measures to study the prognostic value of MMP-9 concentrations. Abstract Objectives Due to climate change and major sport events in hot climate, temperature regulation during exercise is gaining relevance in professional and amateur sports. This study compares the effects of an upper body garment with water-soaked inlays, of a synthetic- and of a cotton shirt on health, fluid balance and performance during a high intensity exercise session in the heat. Methods 32 healthy participants (age 25 ± 4 years; 15 women) were assigned to one of three upper body garments (cotton-shirt, synthetic-fiber-shirt, cooling-vest with water-soaked inlays) and underwent a high intensity steady state ergometer exercise test (Temperature 30.5 °C, frontal airflow 20 km/h, relative air-humidity 43 ± 13%). Time to exhaustion, physiologic parameters (inner ear temperature, heart rate, relative oxygen uptake, body weight, garment weight) and subjective data (perceived exertion, thermal sensation, skin wettedness, clothing humidity, feeling scale) were assessed. Time to exhaustion was analyzed using a survival time analysis. Other outcomes were evaluated using Kruskal-Wallis Tests and 95%-confidence-intervals. Results Time to exhaustion was not different between groups. Cooling-vests were heavier and led to lower inner ear temperature, lower thermal- and higher clothing-humidity-sensation at the start of exercise. Physiologic and subjective parameters showed no group differences at exercise termination. Conclusions In a realistic setting including frontal airflow, synthetic and cotton-fiber shirts reach comparable effects on health and thermoregulation and are perceived as equally comfortable. Although inducing a small pre-exercise cooling effect, a water-soaked garment induces a weight penalty and creates a less comfortable situation.

Intestinal parasites are part of the intestinal ecosystem and have been shown to establish close interactions with the intestinal microbiota. However, little is known about the influence of intestinal protozoa on the regulation of the immune response. In this study, we analyzed the regulation of the immune response of germ-free mice transplanted with fecal microbiota (FMT) from individuals with multiple parasitic protozoans (P) and non-parasitized individuals (NP). We determined the production of intestinal cytokines, the lymphocyte populations in both the colon and the spleen, and the genetic expression of markers of intestinal epithelial integrity. We observed a general downregulation of the intestinal immune response in mice receiving FMT-P. We found significantly lower intestinal production of the cytokines IL-6, TNF, IFN-γ, MCP-1, IL-10, and IL-12 in the FMT-P. Furthermore, a significant decrease in the proportion of CD3+, CD4+, and Foxp3+ T regulatory cells (Treg) was observed in both, the colon and spleen with FMT-P in contrast to FMT-NP. We also found that in FMT-P mice there was a significant decrease in tjp1 expression in all three regions of the small intestine; ocln in the ileum; reg3γ in the duodenum and relmβ in both the duodenum and ileum. We also found an increase in colonic mucus layer thickness in mice colonized with FMT-P in contrast with FMT-NP. Finally, our results suggest that gut protozoa, such as Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba coli, Endolimax nana, Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar, Iodamoeba bütschlii, and Chilomastix mesnili consortia affect the immunoinflammatory state and induce functional changes in the intestine via the gut microbiota. Likewise, it allows us to establish an FMT model in germ-free mice as a viable alternative to explore the effects that exposure to intestinal parasites could have on the immune response in humans.

Background: Hypertension can be classified into different phenotypes based on systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) that carry a different prognosis and may therefore be differently associated with sympathetic activity. We assessed the association between cardiac autonomic function determined from continuous finger BP recordings and hypertensive phenotypes. Methods: We included 10,221 individuals aged between 18-70 years from the multi-ethnic HELIUS study. Finger BP was recorded continuously for 3-5 minutes from which cross-correlation baroreflex sensitivity (xBRS) and heart rate variability (HRV) were determined. Hypertension was classified into isolated systolic (ISH; ≥140/40 years) and sex, using regression with correction for relevant covariates. For xBRS, values were log-transformed. Results: In younger adults with ISH, xBRS was comparable to normotensive individuals in men (ratio 0.92; 95%CI 0.84-1.01) and women (1.00; 95%CI 0.84-1.20), while xBRS was significantly lower in IDH and SDH (ratios between 0.67 and 0.80). In older adults, all hypertensive phenotypes had significantly lower xBRS compared to normotensives. We found a similar pattern for HRV in men, while in women HRV did not differ between phenotypes. Conclusions: In younger men and women ISH is not associated with a shift towards increased sympathetic control, while IDH and SDH in younger and all hypertensive phenotypes in older participants were associated with increased sympathetic control. This suggests that alterations in autonomic regulation could be a contributing factor to known prognostic disparities between hypertensive phenotypes.

ABSTRACTEnterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) is a major cause of severe bloody diarrhea, with potentially lethal complications, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome. In humans, EHEC colonizes the colon, which is also home to a diverse community of trillions of microbes known as the gut microbiota. Although these microbes and the metabolites that they produce represent an important component of EHEC’s ecological niche, little is known about how EHEC senses and responds to the presence of gut microbiota metabolites. In this study, we used a combined RNA-Seq and Tn-Seq approach to characterize EHEC’s response to metabolites from an in vitro culture of 33 human gut microbiota isolates (MET-1), previously demonstrated to effectively resolve recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection in human patients. Collectively, the results revealed that EHEC adjusts to growth in the presence of microbiota metabolites in two major ways: by altering its metabolism and by activating stress responses. Metabolic adaptations to the presence of microbiota metabolites included increased expression of systems for maintaining redox balance and decreased expression of biotin biosynthesis genes, reflecting the high levels of biotin released by the microbiota into the culture medium. In addition, numerous genes related to envelope and oxidative stress responses (including cpxP, spy, soxS, yhcN, and bhsA) were upregulated during EHEC growth in a medium containing microbiota metabolites. Together, these results provide insight into the molecular mechanisms by which pathogens adapt to the presence of competing microbes in the host environment, which ultimately may enable the development of therapies to enhance colonization resistance and prevent infection.

Understanding the harmful effects of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) on space exploration requires a substantial amount of nuclear data. Specifically, the interaction of energetic GCR charged particles with spacecraft materials generates secondary radiations that, through energy deposition, can harm astronauts and electronic systems. By identifying the gaps in our knowledge of the relevant nuclear data—such as interaction cross sections—and identifying ways to fill those gaps—with measurements, compilations, evaluations, dissemination, reaction modeling, sensitivity studies, and uncertainty quantification—the safety and viability of space exploration can be improved. This work surveys the state of the art in this interdisciplinary field and identifies promising collaborative research topics that have significant potential to advance our understanding of the effects of the space radiation environment on space exploration.

Introduction: The middle cranial fossa (MCF) approach is a well-established procedure in surgery of the internal auditory canal, as well as with the retrosigmoid and translabyrinthine approaches. It is commonly used in the hearing-preserving microsurgery of small vestibular schwannomas (VS). The debate about the “best” approach for the microsurgery of small VS without contact to the brainstem is controversial. It has been stated that the MCF approach leads to irreversible damage to the temporal lobe, which may be evident in follow-up magnet resonance imaging (MRI) as gliosis in up to 70% of patients. Materials and Methods: This study represents a retrospective chart analysis conducted at a tertiary university hospital. Here, 76 postoperative MRIs were re-evaluated by an experienced neuroradiologist and compared with the preoperative images. Temporal lobe gliosis was classified on an ordinal scale as absent, slight, moderate or severe. Occurrence of gliosis was matched to the clinical predictors (tumor stage, tumor volume, sex, age, and side). Results: No case of severe or moderate gliosis was found in the patient group. Slight gliosis of the temporal lobe was rare and was only detected in four patients (5%). There was no relation between clinical predictors and the incidence of gliosis. Conclusions: In our cohort, postoperative MR imaging did not reveal relevant damage to the temporal lobe parenchyma. This confirms the safe concept of microsurgery of small tumors via the middle fossa approach. The severe glioses described in other studies may be caused by a forced insertion of the retractor or by more extended approaches. However, further prospective neurocognitive studies seem to be necessary in order to assess functional changes in the temporal lobe.

Gene therapy holds promise as a life-changing option for individuals with genetic variants that give rise to disease. FDA-approved gene therapies for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, β-Thalassemia, hemophilia A/B, retinal dystrophy, and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy have generated buzz around the ability to change the course of genetic syndromes. However, this excitement risks over-expansion into areas of genetic disease that may not fit the current state of gene therapy. While in situ (targeted to an area) and ex vivo (removal of cells, delivery, and administration of cells) approaches show promise, they have a limited target ability. Broader in vivo gene therapy trials have shown various continued challenges, including immune response, use of immune suppressants correlating to secondary infections, unknown outcomes of overexpression, and challenges in driving tissue-specific corrections. Viral delivery systems can be associated with adverse outcomes such as hepatotoxicity and lethality if uncontrolled. In some cases, these risks are far outweighed by the potentially lethal syndromes for which these systems are being developed. Therefore, it is critical to evaluate the field of genetic diseases to perform cost–benefit analyses for gene therapy. In this work, we present the current state while setting forth tools and resources to guide informed directions to avoid foreseeable issues in gene therapy that could prevent the field from continued success.

PURPOSEDiagnosis of AIDS lymphoma in low-resource settings, like South Africa, is often delayed, leaving patients with limited treatment options. In tuberculosis (TB) endemic regions, overlapping signs and symptoms often lead to diagnostic delays. Assessment of plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) by next-generation sequencing (NGS) may expedite the diagnosis of lymphoma but requires high-quality cfDNA.METHODSPeople living with HIV with newly diagnosed aggressive B-cell lymphoma and those with newly diagnosed TB seeking care at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and its surrounding clinics, in Soweto, South Africa, were enrolled in this study. Each participant provided a whole blood specimen collected in cell-stabilizing tubes. Quantity and quality of plasma cfDNA were assessed. NGS of the immunoglobulin heavy chain was performed.RESULTSNine HIV+ patients with untreated lymphoma and eight HIV+ patients with TB, but without lymphoma, were enrolled. All cfDNA quantity and quality metrics were similar between the two groups, except that cfDNA accounted for a larger fraction of recovered plasma DNA in patients with lymphoma. The concentration of cfDNA in plasma also trended higher in patients with lymphoma. NGS of immunoglobulin heavy chain showed robust amplification of DNA, with large amplicons (> 250 bp) being more readily detected in patients with lymphoma. Clonal sequences were detected in five of nine patients with lymphoma, and none of the patients with TB.CONCLUSIONThis proof-of-principle study demonstrates that whole blood collected for cfDNA in a low-resource setting is suitable for sophisticated sequencing analyses, including clonal immunoglobulin NGS. The detection of clonal sequences in more than half of patients with lymphoma shows promise as a diagnostic marker that may be explored in future studies.

Malnourished children experience a high burden of intestinal pathogens that exacerbate growth stunting, and preventing this pathogen overgrowth has proved challenging. Here the authors show that diet-specific bacterial crossfeeding contributes to the overgrowth of intestinal pathogens during child malnutrition.

Objective Interindividual variation in responses to alcohol is substantial, posing challenges for medical management and for understanding the biological underpinnings of alcohol use disorders (AUD). It is important to understand whether diverse alcohol responses such as sedation, which is predictive of risk and partly heritable, occur concurrently or independently from responses such as blackouts and withdrawal. We hypothesized that latent factors accounting for sources of variance in diverse alcohol response phenotypes could be identified in a large, deeply phenotyped sample of patients with AUD. Methods We factor analyzed 17 alcohol response related items from the Alcohol Dependence Scale (ADS) in 938 individuals diagnosed with AUD via structured clinical interviews. Demographic, genetic, and clinical characteristics were tested as predictors of the latent factors by multiple indicators, multiple causes analysis. Results The final factor solution included three alcohol response factors: Physical Symptoms, Perceptual Disturbances, and Neurobiological Effects. Both gender and genetic ancestry were identified as variables influencing alcohol response. Major depressive disorder positively predicted physical symptoms and aggression negatively predicted physical symptoms. Barratt's Impulsivity Scale total score predicted the Physical and Perceptual domains. Family history, average drinks per drinking day, and negative urgency (an impulsivity measure) predicted all three domains. Conclusions Diverse items from the ADS concurrently load onto three correlated alcohol response factors rather than loading independently. Genetic ancestry and clinical characteristics predicted the severity of items that define the alcohol response factors even after accounting for degree of alcohol consumption. Co‐occurring phenotypes point towards an underlying shared physiology of diverse alcohol responses.

Abstract Preeclampsia, an important cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, is associated with increased sFLT1 levels and with structural and functional damage to the glycocalyx contributing to endothelial dysfunction. We investigated glycocalyx components in relation to preeclampsia in human samples. While soluble syndecan-1 and heparan sulphate were similar in plasma of preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women, dermatan sulphate was increased and keratan sulphate decreased in preeclamptic women. Dermatan sulphate was correlated with soluble syndecan-1, and inversely correlated with blood pressure and activated partial thromboplastin time. To determine if syndecan-1 was a prerequisite for the sFlt1 induced increase in blood pressure in mice we studied the effect of sFlt1 on blood pressure and vascular contractile responses in syndecan-1 deficient and wild type male mice. The classical sFlt1 induced rise in blood pressure was absent in syndecan-1 deficient mice indicating that syndecan-1 is a prerequisite for sFlt1 induced increase in blood pressure central to preeclampsia. The results show that an interplay between syndecan-1 and dermatan sulphate contributes to sFlt1 induced blood pressure elevation in pre-eclampsia.

PURPOSEThe aim of this study was to review the current status of clinical trials for HIV-associated malignancies in people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and efforts made by the AIDS Malignancy Consortium (AMC) to build capacity in SSA for HIV malignancy research.METHODSAll malignancy-related clinical trials in 49 SSA countries on ClinicalTrials.gov were reviewed and evaluated for inclusion and exclusion criteria pertaining to HIV status. Additional studies by AMC in SSA were compiled from Web-based resources, and narrative summaries were prepared to highlight AMC capacity building and training initiatives.RESULTSOf 96 cancer trials identified in SSA, only 11 focused specifically on people living with HIV, including studies in Kaposi sarcoma, cervical dysplasia and cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and ocular surface squamous neoplasia. Recognizing the increasing cancer burden in the region, AMC expanded its clinical trial activities to SSA in 2010, with 4 trials completed to date and 6 others in progress or development, and has made ongoing investments in developing research infrastructure in the region.CONCLUSIONAs the HIV-associated malignancy burden in SSA evolves, research into this domain has been limited. AMC, the only global HIV malignancy-focused research consortium, not only conducts vital HIV-associated malignancies research in SSA, but also develops pathology, personnel, and community-based infrastructure to meet these challenges in SSA. Nonetheless, there is an ongoing need to build on these efforts to improve HIV-associated malignancies outcomes in SSA.

Management of neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) remains a clinical priority to improve patients’ quality of life and prevent dramatic urological complications. Intradetrusor injection of onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT/A1, botulinum neurotoxin A1) is approved as second therapeutic line in these patients, demonstrating a good efficacy. However, a loss of its efficacy over time has been described, with no clear understanding of the underlying mechanisms. This paper aims at shedding new light on BoNT/A1 secondary failure in NDO through functional and structural analysis. Three groups of patients (either non-NDO, NDO with no toxin history or toxin secondary failure) were investigated using an ex vivo bladder strip assay. Detrusor strips were tensed in organ baths and submitted to electrical field stimulation to generate contractions. Recombinant BoNT/A1 was then added at various concentrations and contractions recorded for 4 h. Histology exploring BoNT/A1 targets, fibrosis and neuronal markers was also used. Detrusor strips from patients with BoNT/A1 secondary failure displayed a smaller sensitivity to toxin ex vivo at 3 nM compared to the other groups. Histological evaluation demonstrated the presence of cleaved Synaptosomal-Associated Protein, 25 kDa (c-SNAP25) in the detrusor from the toxin-secondary failure population, indicating some remaining in vivo sensitivity to BoNT/A1 despite the therapeutic escape. Moreover, residual c-SNAP25 did not affect parasympathetic-driven contractions observed ex vivo. This study confirms the slightly lower efficacy of BoNT/A1 in the BoNT/A1 secondary failure NDO group, suggesting that the escape from BoNT/A1 efficacy in NDO occurs at least at the parasympathetic level and could imply compensatory mechanisms for detrusor contraction.

Organotins (OTs) are considered some of the most toxic chemicals introduced into aquatic environments by anthropogenic activities. They are widely used for agricultural and industrial purposes and as antifouling additives on boat hull’s paints. Even though the use of OTs was banned in 2008, elevated levels of OTs can still be detected in aquatic environments. OTs’ deleterious effects upon wildlife and experimental animals are well documented and include endocrine disruption, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, and metabolic dysfunction. Crustaceans are key members of zooplankton and benthic communities and have vital roles in food chains, so the endocrine-disrupting effects of tributyltin (TBT) on crustaceans can affect other organisms. TBT can disrupt carbohydrate and lipid homeostasis of crustaceans by interacting with retinoid X receptor (RXR) and crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) signaling. Moreover, it can also interact with other nuclear receptors, disrupting methyl farnesoate and ecdysteroid signaling, thereby altering growth and sexual maturity, respectively. This compound also interferes in cytochrome P450 system disrupting steroid synthesis and reproduction. Crustaceans are also important fisheries worldwide, and its consumption can pose risks to human health. However, some questions remain unanswered. This mini review aims to update information about the effects of OTs on the metabolism, growth, and reproduction of crustaceans; to compare with known effects in mammals; and to point aspects that still needs to be addressed in future studies. Since both macrocrustaceans and microcrustaceans are good models to study the effects of sublethal TBT contamination, novel studies should be developed using multibiomarkers and omics technology.

The research aim of this article is to investigate the adoption patterns of HUB platforms that create and support virtual learning communities (VLC). The adoption patterns of one particular HUB called the Collaboratory for Engineering Education Research or CLEERhub, is presented as an example of how HUBs may be used as VLCs. After explaining the affordances of the HUB architecture, the article uses two approaches to discuss the adoption of CLEERhub by users. First, the authors link the five stages of Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation model with various CLEERhub user metrics. The resultant mapping suggests that CLEERhub users are primarily in early stages of adoption. This is not an unexpected finding given that CLEERhub has been recently created. The second approach to studying adoption investigates the experience of a group of college students who used CLEERhub to aid them in completing a group assignment. A CLEERhub Usage Survey was developed and implemented during the last part of the semester to collect information about students’ experience with CLEERhub. Student reactions to CLEERhub were generally positive. After the two approaches are presented, the paper connects the approaches by speculating on how student experience (adoption approach 2) might be mapped to the five stages of Rogers’ model (adoption approach 1). The paper ends with considerations and suggestions for best practices.

A large local health department in Colorado partnered with 15 school districts to develop an approach to evaluate changes in access to healthy foods in reimbursable school lunches and a la carte offerings.School district nutrition managers were engaged at the start of this project. Health department dietitians developed criteria to classify food items as "Lower Fat and less added Sugar" (LFS) and "Higher Fat and more added Sugar" (HFS) based on the percentage of calories from fat and grams of added sugar. Lunch production sheets were obtained for two time periods, food items and the number of planned servings recorded. LFS and HFS planned servings were summed for each time period, and a LFS to HFS ratio calculated by dividing LFS planned servings by HFS planned servings. We compared 5 locally conducted, Internet-based outbreak investigations with 5 telephone-based investigations. Internet-based surveys required less completion time, and response rates were similar for both investigation methods. Participant satisfaction with Internet-based surveys was high.

To determine whether environmental surveillance of West Nile virus–positive dead birds, mosquito pools, equines, and sentinel chickens helped predict human cases in metropolitan Denver, Colorado, during 2003, we analyzed human surveillance data and environmental data. Birds successfully predicted the highest proportion of human cases, followed by mosquito pools, and equines.

Tri-County Health Department and Boulder County Public Health conducted a follow-up study of all nonfatal West Nile virus (WNV) cases reported during 2003 in 4 metropolitan Denver, Colorado, counties. Self-reported patient information was obtained ≈6 months after onset. A total of 656 (81.2%) eligible WNV patients are included in this study.
