Abstract Self-agency is the awareness of being the agent of one's own thoughts and actions. Self-agency is essential for interacting with the outside world (reality-monitoring). The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is thought to be one neural correlate of self-agency. We investigated whether mPFC activity can causally modulate self-agency on two different tasks of speech-monitoring and reality-monitoring. The experience of self-agency is thought to result from making reliable predictions about the expected outcomes of one’s own actions. This self-prediction ability is necessary for the encoding and memory retrieval of one’s own thoughts during reality-monitoring to enable accurate judgments of self-agency. This self-prediction ability is also necessary for speech-monitoring where speakers consistently compare auditory feedback (what we hear ourselves say) with what we expect to hear while speaking. In this study, 30 healthy participants are assigned to either 10 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to enhance mPFC excitability (N = 15) or 10 Hz rTMS targeting a distal temporoparietal site (N = 15). High-frequency rTMS to mPFC enhanced self-predictions during speech-monitoring that predicted improved self-agency judgments during reality-monitoring. This is the first study to provide robust evidence for mPFC underlying a causal role in self-agency, that results from the fundamental ability of improving self-predictions across two different tasks.

Abstract An essential problem in photochemistry is understanding the coupling of electronic and nuclear dynamics in molecules, which manifests in processes such as hydrogen migration. Measurements of hydrogen migration in molecules that have more than two equivalent hydrogen sites, however, produce data that is difficult to compare with calculations because the initial hydrogen site is unknown. We demonstrate that coincidence ion-imaging measurements of a few deuterium-tagged isotopologues of ethanol can determine the contribution of each initial-site composition to hydrogen-rich fragments following strong-field double ionization. These site-specific probabilities produce benchmarks for calculations and answer outstanding questions about photofragmentation of ethanol dications; e.g., establishing that the central two hydrogen atoms are 15 times more likely to abstract the hydroxyl proton than a methyl-group proton to form H $${}_{3}^{+}$$ 3 + and that hydrogen scrambling, involving the exchange of hydrogen between different sites, is important in H2O+ formation. The technique extends to dynamic variables and could, in principle, be applied to larger non-cyclic hydrocarbons.

Introduction: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) has proven to be a valuable strategy for optimizing biologic therapies, among which are anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) treatments in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In particular, reactive TDM has been shown to manage treatment failures more cost-effectively than empirical dose adjustments for anti-TNF drugs. However, several challenges currently impede the widespread adoption of TDM in clinical practice, particularly addressing the delay between sample collection and result availability. To overcome this limitation, the use of point-of-care technology tests (POCTs) is a potential solution. Point-of-care technology tests are medical diagnostic tests performed at the site of patient care to provide immediate results, allowing for quicker decision-making and treatment. The current standard of care (SOC) for drug level measurement relies on the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), a method that is time-consuming and requires specialized personnel. This study aims to evaluate a novel, user-friendly, and efficient POCT method (ProciseDx Inc.) and compare its performance with the SOC ELISA in assessing infliximab and adalimumab levels in blood samples from IBD patients. Methods: In this prospective, single-center study, we collected blood samples from IBD patients, both CD and UC, receiving infliximab (87 IBD patients; 50% UC and 50% CD) or adalimumab (60 patients; 14% UC and 48% CD) and we analyzed the blood’s drugs levels using both the ProciseDx Analyzer POC and the SOC ELISA. We examined the correlation between the two methods using statistical analyses, including the Deming regression test. Additionally, we assessed the ease of use, turnaround time, and overall practicality of the POCT in a clinical setting. Results: The ProciseDx test demonstrated a strong correlation with the SOC ELISA for measuring both infliximab and adalimumab levels. In particular, the overall correlation between the ProciseDx POCT and the ELISA assessments showed an r coefficient of 0.83 with an R squared value of 0.691 (95% CI 0.717–0.902) for IFX measurements, and an r coefficient of 0.85 with an R squared value of 0.739 (95% CI 0.720–0.930). Conclusions: the ProciseDx POC test offers significantly faster turnaround times and is more straightforward to use, making it a viable alternative for routine clinical monitoring. Despite its promising potential, further refinement and validation of the ProciseDx test are necessary to ensure its effectiveness across diverse patient populations and clinical settings. Future research should focus on optimizing the POC tests’ performance and evaluating its long-term impact on IBD management.

Abstract We have studied the fragmentation of the brominated cyclic hydrocarbons bromocyclo-propane, bromocyclo-butane, and bromocyclo-pentane upon Br(3d) and C(1s) inner-shell ionization using coincidence ion momentum imaging. We observe a substantial yield of CH3 + fragments, whose formation requires intramolecular hydrogen (or proton) migration, that increases with molecular size, which contrasts with prior observations of hydrogen migration in linear hydrocarbon molecules. Furthermore, by inspecting the fragment ion momentum correlations of three-body fragmentation channels, we conclude that CH x + fragments (with x = 0, …, 3) with an increasing number of hydrogens are more likely to be produced via sequential fragmentation pathways. Overall trends in the molecular-size-dependence of the experimentally observed kinetic energy releases and fragment kinetic energies are explained with the help of classical Coulomb explosion simulations.

H2 roaming is associated with H3 + formation when certain organic molecules are exposed to strong laser fields. Here, the mechanistic details and time-resolved dynamics of H3 + formation from a series of alcohols were obtained and found that the product yield decreases as the carbon chain length increases.

The production of bioenergy from plant biomass has the potential to reduce fossil fuel use. The number of biogas facilities around the world has risen dramatically, increasing demand for feedstocks. In this study the invasive perennial grass Phragmites australis was evaluated as a biogas feedstock in comparison with Miscanthus x giganteus and Panicum virgatum. Results from three field sites for each species demonstrated that biomass yields for P. australis averaged approximately 1.82 ± 0.9 kg dry matter (DM) m−2, comparable to that of M. x giganteus. Yield of P. australis was greater than P. virgatum, which ranged from 0.49 ± 0.06 to 0.69 ± 0.07 kg DM m−2 in July and October, respectively. In mesophilic bench-top digester experiments, methane yields were greater for July-harvested material than for October, ranging from 172.4 ± 15.3 to 229.8 ± 15.2 L CH4 kg−1 volatile solids (VS) for all perennial grasses. Methane yields per hectare were highest for October-harvested M. x giganteus, followed by July-harvested M. x giganteus and P. australis, whereas methane yield from P. virgatum at both harvest times was lower than the other two species. These results suggest that P. australis is not an economically viable biogas feedstock without pre-treatment to improve methane yield.
