Abstract Background People all around the world are affected by primary liver cancers like hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is usually associated with cirrhosis. Early HCC detection is crucial for better prognosis, but effective biomarkers are still needed. Hepcidin, a hormone-regulating iron homeostasis, has been implicated in liver diseases. In this study, blood hepcidin levels were evaluated in cirrhotic individuals as a possible biomarker for HCC. Methods There were three groups involved in this case-control study: cirrhotic patients with no HCC (group I), cirrhotic patients diagnosed with HCC (group II), and healthy controls (group III). Clinical and laboratory data, such as those from tests indicating the liver function, hepcidin levels, and imaging, were all analyzed using a number of statistical tests. Results When compared to those with cirrhosis, serum hepcidin levels were significantly lower in HCC patients, but there was no significant difference statistically between the two studies involved: cirrhotic groups and the controls. Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was also significantly greater in HCC patients. Conclusions The start and progression of liver diseases, such as HCC in cirrhotic people, appear to be influenced by hepcidin. It can be utilized as a potential HCC biomarker when cirrhotic liver is present, despite the fact that it cannot be used to diagnose cirrhosis by itself.

This study employs density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+g(d,p) level to investigate the interaction of XH3 gases (X = N, P, As) with the Mn-phthalocyanine molecule (MnPc). Grimme’s D3 dispersion correction is applied to consider long-range interactions. The adsorption behavior is explored under the influence of an external static electric field (EF) ranging from −0.514 to 0.514 V/Å. Chemical adsorption of XH3 molecules onto the MnPc molecule is confirmed. The adsorption results in a significant decrease in the energy gap (Eg) of MnPc, indicating the potential alteration of its optical properties. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis reveals partially covalent bonds between XH3 and MnPc, and the charge density differenc (Δρ) calculations suggest a charge donation-back donation mechanism. The UV-vis spectrum of MnPc experiences a blue shift upon XH3 adsorption, highlighting MnPc’s potential as a naked-eye sensor for XH3 molecules. Thermodynamic calculations indicate exothermic interactions, with NH3/MnPc being the most stable complex. The stability of NH3/MnPc decreases with increasing temperature. The direction and magnitude of the applied electric field (EF) play a crucial role in determining the adsorption energy (Eads) for XH3/MnPc complexes. The Eg values decrease with an increasing negative EF, which suggests that the electrical conductivity (σ) and the electrical sensitivity (ΔEg) of the XH3/MnPc complexes are influenced by the magnitude and direction of the applied EF. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the suggested promising prospects for the utilization of MnPc in sensing applications of XH3 gases.

Soil contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), especially caused by the mixture of two or more PAHs, raised great environmental concerns. However, research on the migration and transformation processes of PAHs in soils and their interactions with native communities is limited. In this work, soil samples from uncontaminated sites around the industrial parks in Handan, Hengshui, and Shanghai were artificially supplemented with three concentrations of anthracene (Ant), 9-chloroanthracene (9-ClAnt), benzopyrene (BaP), and chrysene (Chr). Ryegrass was planted to investigate the degradation of PAHs and its interaction with native soil organisms in the constructed ryegrass–microbe–soil microcosmic system. The bacterial and fungal communities in soil were affected by PAHs; their species diversity and relative abundance changed after exposure to different concentrations of PAHs, among which Lysobacter, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Massilia bacteria were correlated to the degradation of PAHs. On the 56th day, the contents of BaP, Chr, and Ant decreased with the degradation process, while the degradation of 9-ClAnt was limited. Nineteen intermediates, including hydroxylation and carboxylated compounds, were identified. The present research would help clarify the potential interactions between PAHs and native organisms in contaminated sites, providing fundamental information for evaluating the transformation risks of PAHs in the natural environment.

In this paper an experimental and numerical investigations were performed to study the performance of partially jacketed R.C. columns subjected to both axial and lateral loads. The current research also investigates the effect of the lateral load direction, with respect to jacket's direction during constant axial load, on the structural response of strengthened columns. The experimental study consists of seven square columns of 100 x 100 mm2 cross-section dimensions and total length of 1000 mm. The columns were strengthened from different sides with 50 mm concrete jackets. The strengthened columns were tested under constant axial load with an increasing lateral force up to column failure. Columns capacities and modes of failure were illustrated and discussed. Going deep into the investigation, a finite element analysis was performed on the experimented columns. A satisfactory agreement was found when the experimental and numerical data were compared together. The ultimate lateral loads of the strengthened columns from two, three, and four sides increased up to 5.83, 8.43, and 11.03 times the lateral load capacity of control columns, respectively. The study also concluded that the loading direction has a significant effect on column lateral capacity.

Background: Ever since the emergence of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) infection in the UAE, the government had taken several preventive measures against the disease, including vaccination. Acceptance of the vaccine among the population played a crucial role in determining whether the pandemic could be successfully controlled. This study aimed to assess the acceptance, knowledge, and perception of the COVID-19 vaccine among the adult population of the UAE. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a snowball sampling method among UAE residents above 18 years of age. Data were collected using an online questionnaire consisting of 33 close-ended questions divided into three sections. Results: A total of 825 adults (males = 18.4% and females = 81.6%) participated in the study. Males were 3.3 times more likely to get vaccinated than females (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.9–5.7). Those participants who took the flu vaccine before were 1.4 times more likely to get vaccinated (95% CI: 1.003–1.897). Employed participants were three times more likely to take the vaccine as compared with students and those who were unemployed (95% CI: 2.078–4.577). Likewise, those who were over 40 years old and those who believed in the efficacy and safety of vaccines were more willing to get vaccinated. Conclusion: The acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine was overall high, especially among males and employees. Our findings may help identify vulnerable groups in order to expand vaccination coverage and help raise awareness among UAE residents.

During the recent founding of Saudi Arabia in 1932, there was no interest in the urban and architectural heritage that Jeddah possesses. As a result, historic Jeddah was exposed to many problems similar to many historical Middle Eastern cities. For example, the historic city wall and many heritage buildings were demolished. With the economic recovery during the 1970s, the original dwellers abandoned the city altogether. They were soon replaced by a class of ex-patriate workers who would inhabit the area, and the city’s distinct heritage fell into neglect. At the beginning of the 1980s, attempts to preserve that area began with the expert Robert Matthew, who studied the remaining historical buildings and proposed strategies for preservation that were based on three main directions: restoration, replacement, or new construction. The issuance of “Saudi’s 2030 vision” included programs to develop Saudi cities, including Jeddah. This program includes the removal of unplanned and slum areas around historic Jeddah without developing a clear master plan for what will replace them. In addition, it includes the complete expropriation of historic Jeddah, without announcing a specific plan for what the area will be used for. Therefore, this study seeks to review current preservation strategies, with the aim of reaching results related to the challenges facing the area; demonstrating the effectiveness of the preservation strategies used; and deducing what could contribute in the future to the development, preservation, and optimal exploitation of the area, without losing its value as a result of the modernization processes currently taking place.

The Research goal was to : - Identify the quality of services in the halls of fitness and bodybuilding in the city of Mosul from the viewpoint of its visitors. The researchers used the descriptive approach for its relevance to the nature of the research, the research community was a visitor of fitness and bodybuilding halls. The research sample was chosen by the deliberate method, and the research community included the attendants in the halls of fitness and body building in the city of Mosul, whose number were (70) halls distributed on both sides of the right city with (10) halls and the left with (60) halls, and these data were obtained by the researchers through a permission to facilitate the task from the Deanship of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences / University of Mosul to the Iraqi Federation for Body Building in Nineveh Governorate. Where the applied sample for the research consisted of (100) recipients, the researchers adopted the (Quality of Services Measure in Mosul swimming Pools), which Al-Taweel prepared in its final form, and after the availability of scientific conditions in it, it was applied to the final research sample to obtain data, which were statistically treated through the use of The percentage, the arithmetic mean, and the standard deviation, and the researchers concluded that the quality of services in the fitness and bodybuilding halls in the city of Mosul concentrated between the average and the weak. The researchers concluded that : - the level of quality of services in the fitness and bodybuilding halls in the city of Mosul ranged from medium to weak. Finally the researchers recommended: - The need for hall administrations to realize that providing the comfort and convenience to the visitors will bebette through the stability, continuity and the accuracy of the level of services. - The hall's sight, interior design, and general cleanliness must be with the developments and conditions for the work of these halls.

DFT and TD-DFT studies of B3LYP/6–31 g(d,p) with the D2 version of Grimme’s dispersion are used to examine the adsorption of a CH2O molecule on Be12O12 and MBe12O12 nano-cages (M = K, Mn, or Cu atom). The energy gap for Be12O12 was 8.210 eV, while the M encapsulation decreased its value to 0.685–1.568 eV, whereas the adsorption of the CH2O gas decreased the Eg values for Be12O12 and CuBe12O12 to 4.983 and 0.876 eV and increased its values for KBe12O12 and MnBe12O12 to 1.286 and 1.516 eV, respectively. The M encapsulation enhanced the chemical adsorption of CH2O gas with the surface of Be12O12. The UV-vis spectrum of the Be12O12 nano-cage was dramatically affected by the M encapsulation as well as the adsorption of the CH2O gas. In addition, the adsorption energies and the electrical sensitivity of the Be12O12 as well as the MBe12O12 nano-cages to CH2O gas could be manipulated with an external electric field. Our results may be fruitful for utilizing Be12O12 as well as MBe12O12 nano-cages as candidate materials for removing and sensing formaldehyde gas.

The chef is also exposed to the use of different types of sharp knives.Also, taking into account the chef’s exposure to constant heat throughout the work period, due to the nature and conditions of his work taking into account the protection of the human body from high heat, humidity, radiation, insects, chemicals and intense friction. Applying this to the chef’s clothes and costumes, for example, making ventilation holes or making supports for strengthening in places Movement, making an adjustment in the pattern that facilitates movement, taking into account the treatment of large and abnormal sizes in the design. Which reflects the addition of proposals for innovative designs using modern fabrics, high-quality technologies, new proposed colors and modern fashion requirements.

The current research aims to: 1- Build an entrepreneurial trend in the halls of fitness and bodybuilding in the city of Mosul from the viewpoint of its visitors. 2- Investigate the level of leadership in the halls of fitness and body building in the city of Mosul from the viewpoint of its Visitors. The researchers used the descriptive approach in its survey to suit the nature of the research, and the research community included (378) people who went to the halls of fitness and body building in the city of Mosul, which were numbered (70) halls distributed on the right sides of the city with (10) halls, and the left with (60) Halls, thus, the research sample included (27) halls for fitness and body building in the city of Mosul, which represented (38.57%) of the research community, and these halls are divided into (9) halls on the right side and (18) halls on the left side of the city of Mosul. The number of people returning to these halls according to the scientific conditions of stability was (378) people distributed over the pilot sample with (18) people and the building sample with (260) people and (68.78%) from the research sample in addition to (100) people for the sample application. And by (26.45%) of the research sample, With regard to the research tools, the researcher built a scale of pioneering orientation for fitness halls and bodybuilding in the city of Mosul according to four dimensions (creativity, risk-taking, proactive, and competitive). On the final research sample in order to obtain data that were statistically treated through the percentage, the arithmetic mean, the simple correlation coefficient, and (T) test for two independent samples. The study concluded the following conclusions: - the level of entrepreneurship in the halls of fitness and bodybuilding in the city of Mosul ranged from medium to weak. The researchers recommended the following: 1- The departments of the halls of fitness and bodybuilding must adopt the pioneering approach in order to achieve the success for these halls. 2- The necessity for hall administrations to develop them by updating the devices and tools used as well as the other aspects in the hall.

Abstract Liver cancer is considered one of the deadliest diseases with one of the highest disease burdens worldwide. Among the different types of liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma is considered to be the most common type. Multiple conventional approaches are being used in treating hepatocellular carcinoma. Focusing on drug treatment, regular agents in conventional forms fail to achieve the intended clinical outcomes. In order to improve the treatment outcomes, utilizing nanoparticles—specifically lipid based nanoparticles—are considered to be one of the most promising approaches being set in motion. Multiple forms of lipid based nanoparticles exist including liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, microemulsion, nanoemulsion, phytosomes, lipid coated nanoparticles, and nanoassemblies. Multiple approaches are used to enhance the tumor uptake as well tumor specificity such as intratumoral injection, passive targeting, active targeting, and stimuli responsive nanoparticles. In this review, the effect of utilizing lipidic nanoparticles is being discussed as well as the different tumor uptake enhancement techniques used. Graphical Abstract

In this study, biosynthesized nanoparticles using chitosan, Ulva fasciata, and Avicennia marina leaves extracts (A, B, and C, respectively), were evaluated as paint additives to control marine fouling on different substrates. These biocidal nanoparticle compounds were prepared using a green biosynthesis method. Their characterizations were conducted using Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Transmission electron microscopy. Each nanoparticle compound was mixed with a prepared paint, resulting in three formulations for each (e.g. 1C, 2C, 3C), containing 20%, 40%, and 60% by weight. Painted PVC, wood, and steel with these nine paints, and the control were immersed in seawater for different periods. After two months of immersion, the least number of fouling species, (one species) was recorded on both the wood and steel panels that were coated with paint (1C). Meanwhile, after four months, the least numbers of fouling (four and six species) were recorded on wood and steel panels that were coated with paint (3C). After around seven months of immersion, the least numbers of fouling species (five and ten) were recorded on wood and steel panels that were coated with paints (1C and 3C), respectively. The steel panel coated with (3C), harbored ∼2% of the total number of barnacles found on the control, after 7 months of immersion. The superior antifouling agent efficiency of extract (C) nanoparticles can be attributed to its constituents of polyphenols, ammonium compounds, and high concentrations of alcohols, besides the presence of both aromatic and aliphatic amide and amide derivatives.

Summary: Background: Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), a public health problem, affects 1-3.7% of women under 40 yielding infertility and a shorter lifespan. Most causes are unknown. Recently, genetic causes were identified, mostly in single families. We studied an unprecedented large cohort of POI to unravel its molecular pathophysiology. Methods: 375 patients with 70 families were studied using targeted (88 genes) or whole exome sequencing with pathogenic/likely-pathogenic variant selection. Mitomycin-induced chromosome breakages were studied in patients’ lymphocytes if necessary. Findings: A high-yield of 29.3% supports a clinical genetic diagnosis of POI. In addition, we found strong evidence of pathogenicity for nine genes not previously related to a Mendelian phenotype or POI: ELAVL2, NLRP11, CENPE, SPATA33, CCDC150, CCDC185, including DNA repair genes: C17orf53(HROB), HELQ, SWI5 yielding high chromosomal fragility. We confirmed the causal role of BRCA2, FANCM, BNC1, ERCC6, MSH4, BMPR1A, BMPR1B, BMPR2, ESR2, CAV1, SPIDR, RCBTB1 and ATG7 previously reported in isolated patients/families. In 8.5% of cases, POI is the only symptom of a multi-organ genetic disease. New pathways were identified: NF-kB, post-translational regulation, and mitophagy (mitochondrial autophagy), providing future therapeutic targets. Three new genes have been shown to affect the age of natural menopause supporting a genetic link. Interpretation: We have developed high-performance genetic diagnostic of POI, dissecting the molecular pathogenesis of POI and enabling personalized medicine to i) prevent/cure comorbidities for tumour/cancer susceptibility genes that could affect life-expectancy (37.4% of cases), or for genetically-revealed syndromic POI (8.5% of cases), ii) predict residual ovarian reserve (60.5% of cases). Genetic diagnosis could help to identify patients who may benefit from the promising in vitro activation-IVA technique in the near future, greatly improving its success in treating infertility. Introduction: In the present research, the health benefits of the traditional Egyptian food called Kishk Sa′eedi (KS) and KS mixed with gum Arabic (GA) or with a mixture of GA and pomegranate seed oil (PSO) were studied in a rat model of metabolic syndrome (MS) induced by feeding high fructose high hydrogenated fat diet (HFFD). Methods: Rats were divided into a normal control group (NC) fed on a balanced diet (Diet 1), a MS control (MSC) receiving HFFD (Diet 2), and three test groups feeding on HFFD containing KS (Diet 3), KS with GA (Diet 4), and KS with GA and PSO (Diet 5), respectively for five weeks. Biochemical and histopathological changes were assessed. Results: Significant increase in blood glucose, plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), urea, creatinine, uric acid, malondialdehyde (MDA), dyslipidemia and reduction in reduced glutathione (GSH) were demonstrated in MSC compared to NC (P < 0.05). Significant elevation in liver fat, MDA and gene expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) with significant down-regulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR-α) were noticed in MSC compared to NC (P < 0.05). The three test diets improved plasma high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), uric acid, MDA, liver PPAR-α and IL-6 expression (P < 0.05) compared to MSC without affecting liver lipids. Blood glucose, plasma dyslipidemia, AST, creatinine and urea were improved by diet 3 and diet 5 (P < 0.05). Diet 3 elevated GSH and reduced ALT and MDA (P < 0.05). Histopathological changes induced by HFFD in both liver and kidney showed variable improvement by feeding the tested diets. Conclusion: The tested diets significantly improved MS rat model with superiority to diet 3.

Abstract Background The nature of opaque lesions such as effusions, atelectasis, masses, and consolidations can be clarified by sonography. This study investigated the sensitivity and accuracy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous core needle biopsy in different thoracic tumors (lung, pleural, chest wall, and mediastinal). Results Sixty patients underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous transthoracic core biopsy of peripheral thoracic masses with a Tru-Cut needle with a big bore. Twenty masses were in the lung, seventeen lesions were in the pleura, ten masses were in the mediastinum, eleven were enlarged palpable lymph nodes, and two masses were in chest wall. The sensitivity, PPV, and accuracy for detection of chest tumors in the chest wall, mediastinum, lung, and pleura were 100% for all, and in LN 88.9, 100, and 90.9%, respectively. The overall diagnostic performance of sonar-guided Tru-Cut needle biopsy in diagnosis was 97.78% sensitivity, 98.18% accuracy, and 100% PPV. Conclusion Tru-Cut needle percutaneous transthoracic core biopsy is a convenient and sensitive process in obtaining samples under ultrasound guidance for exact histological diagnosis of thoracic tumors. The diagnostic efficiency is high, and the technique can also be used in outpatients, which is relatively simple. Background Weaning failure is common in mechanically ventilated patients, and if ultrasound can predict weaning outcome remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diaphragmatic function (thickness and excursion) measured by ultrasound as a predictor of the extubation outcome. Methods We included 62 mechanically ventilated patients from the chest intensive care unit in this study. Sixty-two patients who successfully passed the spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) were enrolled. The transthoracic ultrasound of the diaphragm was performed during an SBT to the assess diaphragmatic function (excursion and thickness), and they were classified into the successful extubation group and the failed extubation group. Abstract Background Convex probe endobronchial ultrasound is a minimally invasive technique used for performing real-time transbronchial needle aspiration of enlarged hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes and could be used for diagnosing proximal peribronchial lesions. Although computed tomography, magnetic resonant imaging, and positron emission tomography/computed tomography have relatively high sensitivity for mediastinal evaluation, pathology is the gold standard. This study compared between Echo Tip Ultra HD-EBUS 22G needle and Echo Tip ProCore HD-EBUS 22G needle in diagnosis of mediastinal lesions using convex probe endobronchial ultrasound. Results Twenty-four patients with mediastinal lesions were included. Convex probe endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration using both Echo Tip Ultra HD 22G and Echo Tip ProCore HD 22G needles was done to all patients with no peripheral lymph node enlargement. CP-EBUS TBNA had diagnostic accuracy 50%, sensitivity 47.6%, and specificity 100% in diagnosis of mediastinal lesions. The Echo Tip Ultra HD needle had diagnostic accuracy 40.9%, sensitivity 38%, and specificity 100% compared to the Echo Tip ProCore HD needle which had diagnostic accuracy 31.8%, sensitivity 82.5%, and specificity 100%. The difference between both needles was statistically insignificant. The Echo Tip Ultra 22G HD needle had more representative cellularity (82%) compared to the Echo Tip ProCore 22G HD needle (45%) with a significant difference between both needles (p value = 0.001). Conclusion Both needles can be used equally in sampling mediastinal lesions. This study supports that Echo Tip Ultra HD and Echo Tip ProCore HD needles can be used equally in sampling of mediastinal lesions and supports ultrasound screening of enlarged supraclavicular and cervical lymph nodes before performing EBUS-TBNA in patients with mediastinal lesions.

The orbital error is one of the errors in GPS which affect the accuracy of GPS positioning. In this research GPS broadcast, ultra-rapid, rapid and precise satellite ephemerides are used for processing different baseline lengths among some CORS stations by using the Trimble Business Center software (TBC) and different satellite ephemerides (NRCan ultra-rapid, NRCan rapid and IGS final) are tested in CSRS-PPP online application at the same CORS stations. In this research, when using TBC software for processing the different baseline lengths by using the different satellite ephemerides and compared the coordinates of CORS stations which obtained from the different satellite ephemerides with each other. The results showed that the best satellite ephemerides closest to rapid and final satellite ephemerides are the ultra-rapid (00 UTC) and ultra-rapid (06 UTC). When processing the same CORS stations which used at TBC on CSRSPPP online application by using the different satellite ephemerides it is found also that the NRCan ultra-rapid closest to final satellite ephemerides.

The use of phytochemicals is gaining increasing attention for treating cancer morbidity with minimal burden side effects. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activities of Pinus roxburghii branch (P. roxburghii) and Nauplius graveolens (N. graveolens) extracts in vitro. Cell viability was estimated using MTT assay. DNA fragmentation was determined to detect apoptotic pathway initiation. Mechanistically, the apoptotic pathway was tracked by estimating the relative mRNA expression levels of the Bcl-2, Bax, Cas3, NF-κB, and PI3k genes by qRT-PCR. P. roxburghii exhibited moderate antioxidant activity, while N. graveolens possessed highly significant (p < 0.05) scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS assays. HPLC analysis demonstrated that catechin and chlorogenic acid were the predominant polyphenolic compounds in P. roxburghii and N. graveolens, respectively. The P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts inhibited the viability of HCT-116 cells with IC50 values of 30.6 µg mL−1 and 26.5 µg mL−1, respectively. DNA fragmentation analysis showed that the proposed extracts induced apoptosis in HCT-116 cells. Moreover, the IC50 doses of the selected extracts significantly (p < 0.05) upregulated Bax and cleaved Cas-3, and downregulated Bcl-2, NF-κB, and PI3k genes versus the GAPDH gene as a housekeeping gene in comparison to the control group. The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio was raised upon treatment. The mentioned extracts exhibited antimicrobial action against all tested bacteria and fungi. The highest antibacterial effect was recorded against E. coli, with inhibition zones of 12.0 and 11.2 mm for P. roxburghii and N. graveolens, respectively. On the other hand, the highest antifungal action was registered for Penicillium verrucosum and A. niger, with inhibition zones of 9.8 and 9.2 mm for the tested extracts, respectively. In conclusion, the outcomes of this study indicate that P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts could potentially be used as anticancer, antibacterial, and antifungal agents.

The present study aimed to evaluate the chemopreventive potential of Pinus roxburghii branch (P. roxburghii) and Nauplius graveolens (N. graveolens) extracts against human colorectal cancer (CRC) induced by C26 murine cells in a BALB/c mouse model. Real-time qRT-PCR was used to evaluate the apoptotic pathway by measuring the relative mRNA expression levels of the Bcl-2, Bax, Cas3, NF-κB, and PI3k genes. At the termination of the 30-day period, blood samples were collected to assay the biomarkers. The results showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the levels of TGF-β, CEA, CA19-9, malondialdehyde, ALT, AST, ALP, urea, and creatinine in the positive control compared to the negative control group. In addition, the glutathione reductase activity and total antioxidant activity were reduced in the positive control compared to the negative control. The biomarkers mentioned above were restored to almost normal levels after administering a safe dose (1/10) of a lethal dose of P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts. Administration of one-tenth of the LD50 of P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts caused a significant upregulation of the expression of Bax and Cas-3 and downregulation of the Bcl-2, NF-ĸB, and PI3k genes vs. the GAPDH gene as a housekeeping gene compared to the control group. Furthermore, the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio increased upon treatment. After administration of P. roxburghii and N. graveolens at a safe dose (1/10) of a lethal dose, the results showed improvement in both body weight gain and a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in tumor volume. Histopathological changes supported these improvements. Conclusively, the research outputs show that P. roxburghii and N. graveolens extracts can be utilized as potential chemopreventive agents for CRC treatment by stimulating cancer cell apoptosis and suppressing CRC survival and proliferation.

The present study was conducted to prepare nano-chitosan particles (CN) by ultrafine grinding from crude chitosan powder (CC) using a ball mill with 130 numbers of zirconia beads in range from 0.5 to 1.5 mm diameter (75 beads 0.5 mm diameter, 30 beads 1.0 mm diameter and 25 beads 1.5 mm diameter). In addition, physical and rheological properties of chitosan solutions were determined. The results revealed that ultrafine grinding has effectively milled the chitosan particles to nanoscale. Prepared chitosan nanoparticles were characterized by devices X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Zetasizer particle sizes and Zeta potential of chitosan particles (after milling for 30, 60 and 90 minutes). The particle size of nano-chitosan was distributed in a range of 250-600 nm. with a polydispersity index use as an anti-oxidant and antimicrobial with reducing the amount used to deliver the desired purpose. Additional research is required to further investigate the potential value-added utilization of these chitosan derivatives in improving the quality and safety of some food products.

This overall process deals with evaluating the performance of silver nanoparticles, synthesized from sodium caseinate (SC) as green biological active agent, in comparison with widely produced from carboxymethyl cellulose, other carbohydrates (oxidized nanocellulose fibres (OC) and starch (St)). The TGA, FTIR and TEM, as well as its antimicrobial activities toward pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in addition to the yeast strain Candida albicans NRRL Y-477 were examined. In addition, with regard to their anti-tumour activity, the evaluation was studied via many cancer cell lines against RPE1 (normal retina cell line). The results revealed that the SC–Ag(I) and CMC–Ag(I) complexes were formed in six- and five-membered chelate rings, respectively, as nanoparticles, while linear chelation structure was formed in case of OC–Ag(I) and St–Ag(I) complexes. The complexation of SC with Ag(I) ions was recommended as promising stable and antimicrobial agent, with lower free Ag(I) ions and particle size than other Ag-complexes. Moreover, it provided anti-tumour activity of most tested cell lines (in vitro), with the following sequence HCT116 > PC3 > HePG 2 > MCF-7 > A549 with IC50 and IC90 values of 25.8 and 54.73 µg ml−1, 45.1 and 66.7 µg ml−1, 64.3 and 110.7 µgml−1, 71.4 and 114.8 µgml−1 and 80.1 and 127.7 µgml−1, respectively. The promising effect of SC–Ag complex was also clear from its selective index versus RPE1 (normal retina cell line).

The current study investigated the cytotoxic effect of ten sulfonamide-derived isatins, following molecular hybridization, based on the association principles, on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) HepG2 and Huh7 cell lines, compared for safety using human normal retina pigmented epithelial (RPE-1) cells. The ten compounds showed variable in vitro cytotoxicity on HepG2 and Huh7 cells, using the MTT assay. Four compounds (4/10) were highly cytotoxic to both HepG2 and HuH7. However, only 3 of these 4 were of the highest safety margin on RPE-1 cells in vitro and in the in vivo acute (14-day) oral toxicity study. These later, superior three compounds’ structures are 3-hydroxy-3-(2-oxo-2-(p-tolyl)ethyl)-5-(piperidin-1-ylsulfonyl)indolin-2-one (3a), N-(4-(2-(2-oxo-5-(piperidin-1-ylsulfonyl)indolin-3-ylidene)acetyl)phenyl)acetamide (4b), and N-(3-(2-(2-oxo-5-(piperidin-1-ylsulfonyl)indolin-3-ylidene)acetyl)phenyl)acetamide (4c). The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of the tested compounds (3a, 4b, and 4c) on HepG2 cells were approximately 16.8, 44.7, and 39.7 μM, respectively. The 3a, 4b, and 4c compounds significantly decreased the angiogenic marker epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) level and that was further confirmed via molecular docking inside the EFGR active site (PDB: 1M17). The binding free energies ranged between −19.21 and −21.74 Kcal/mol compared to Erlotinib (−25.65 Kcal/mol). The most promising compounds, 3a, 4b, and 4c, showed variable anticancer potential on “hallmarks of cancer”, significant cytotoxicity, and apoptotic anti-angiogenic and anti-invasive effects, manifested as suppression of Bcl-2, urokinase plasminogen activation, and heparanase expression in HepG2-treated cells’ lysate, compared to non-treated HepG2 cells. In conclusion, compound “3a” is highly comparable to doxorubicin regarding cell cycle arrest at G2/M, the pre-G0 phases and early and late apoptosis induction and is comparable to Erlotinib regarding binding to EGFR active site. Therefore, the current study could suggest that compound “3a” is, hopefully, the most safe and active synthesized isatin sulfonamide derivative for HCC management.

Chronic, non-healing wounds are a significant cause of global morbidity and mortality, and strategies to improve delayed wound closure represent an unmet clinical need. High-density lipoproteins (HDL) can enhance wound healing, but exploitation of this finding is challenging due to the complexity and instability of these heterogeneous lipoproteins. The responsiveness of primary human neonatal keratinocytes, and neonatal and human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) to HDL was confirmed by cholesterol efflux, but promotion of ‘scrape’ wound healing occurred only in primary human neonatal (HDFn) and adult fibroblasts (HDFa). Treatment of human fibroblasts with HDL induced multiple changes in the expression of small non-coding microRNA sequences, determined by microchip array, including hsa-miR-6727-5p. Intriguingly, levels of hsa-miR-6727-5p increased in HDFn, but decreased in HDFa, after exposure to HDL. Delivery of a hsa-miR-6727-5p mimic elicited repression of different target genes in HDFn (ZNF584) and HDFa (EDEM3, KRAS), and promoted wound closure in HDFn. By contrast, a hsa-miR-6727-5p inhibitor promoted wound closure in HDFa. We conclude that HDL treatment exerts distinct effects on the expression of hsa-miR-6727-5p in neonatal and adult fibroblasts, and that this is a sequence which plays differential roles in wound healing in these cell types, but cannot replicate the myriad effects of HDL.

The study aims to identify the relationship between social support and the adaptation of students of the Faculty of Physical Education at Yarmouk University to the university environment. The study relied on a descriptive-analytical method. A questionnaire was applied to a random sample of (287) male and female students from the Faculty of Physical Education. The results of the study showed that the level of social support among students of the Faculty of Physical Education was high. In addition, the study showed that the level of adaptation of the students of the Faculty of Physical Education to the university environment was at a high level. Moreover, the study revealed that there are statistical differences in the level of social support and in the level of students' adaptation due to gender and place of residence in favor of males and city, respectively.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate different biological activities of Trichoderma viride fungus (Family Hypocreaceae). Trichoderma viride isolated for the first time from the cucumber soil (rhizosphere). It was tested as antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer agent. Trichoderma viride from the cucumber soil (rhizosphere) caused inhibition of the mycelial growth of Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii. Also, the alcoholic extract of the fungal mycelia proved a potent antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas fluorescens. In addition, it exhibited a significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporium, Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium ultimum at 100 µg/disc. Study of the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the volatile constituents had been done. The in vitro antioxidant, anticancer and antiviral activities of the isolated proteins, and carbohydrates were determined. Furthermore, the volatile constituents were isolated from fresh mycelia of Trichoderma viride and subjected to GC/MS analysis. Total protein (10%), carbohydrate (19.57%), steroidal (13.95%) and triterpenoidal content (38.34%) were determined in the alcoholic extract of Trichoderma viride mycelia. In conclusion, this fungus showed antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral and antibacterial effects. Further studies must be done to identify the molecules responsible for its effect and to consider its application in the pharmacological and medicinal purposes.

Calcification in lung lesions includes many differential diagnoses and usually indicates a benign course. However, its interpretation is challenging due to many etiologies. Radiological visualization of extensive calcification in bronchogenic carcinoma is not familiar and may cause confusion and misdiagnosis; however, it may be rarely seen and has also been rarely reported. We documented a case of lung adenocarcinoma with extensive calcification in computed tomography (CT) of chest and diagnosed as mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung by bronchoscopic lung biopsy.

Objective: This work aimed for using multislice computed tomography (MSCT) to map the bronchial tree and assess the exact site, direction, airway findings and bronchial measurements to guide trans-bronchial lung biopsy from an inaccessible lung lesion. Patients and methods: This study was carried on 26 patients. It was conducted in the Radiology Department, in collaboration with Chest Department, in the period from January 2015 to April 2016. All patients were subjected to Virtual Bronchographic (VB) examination and Trans-Bronchial lung biopsy (in selected cases guided by the VB results). Results: In this study, MSCT-VB maps guided the fiber-optic bronchoscopy in 30 bronchial lesions in 26 patients to the proper sampling site for different lung lesions with success rate 100% and CT maps were done, reaching 3rd to 7th order bronchial generation with mean distance from central bronchi was 21.3 mm and mean target bronchial diameter was 1.9 mm. Right sided lesions encountered in 57.7% and left sided lesions in 42.3% with the most common segmental affection was the right upper lobe in 36.7% of bronchial lesions and the apico-posterior subsegment of left upper lobe in 23.3% of lesions, then planning according to the site of the lesion in relation to the bronchial tree in the VB was done. Histopathological assessment was done with 61.5% neoplastic lesions and 38.5% inflammatory lesions. Conclusion: Multiplanar reconstruction images together with virtual bronchographic images were accurate in the detection of lesion’s site, depiction of degree of narrowing, and distal visualization of airways. This CT map should be used to guide bronchoscopy or to direct trans-bronchial needle biopsy to guarantee positive histopathological results.

The current work aims to present systematic information about encrusting fouling bryozoan fauna collected from Hurghada, Egyptian Red Sea. During September 2015, scraped fouling samples were collected from beneath the jetty of the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Red Sea branch, Egypt. Five species of encrusting bryozoan are recorded in the present study. These are Celleporaria aperta, Parasmittina egyptiaca, Watersipora subtorquata, Hippopodina feegeensis and Scorpiodinipora costulata, affiliating to 5 families, which belong to the suborder Neocheilostomina. Parasmittina egyptiaca, Hippopodina feegeensis and Scorpiodinipora costulata are new records from Hurghada, Red Sea waters. Descriptions of the recorded species are given with illustrative photos as well as their geographical distribution and habitats.

Formation of binary complexes of Al(III), Cr(III), Fe(III), Th(IV), UO2(II), Ce(III), La(III), and Gd(III) with 3-(2-ethylamino)-1-hydroxyethyl] phenol (Effortil) were studied potentiometrically at 37.0 °C and I = 0.16 mol dm−3 NaNO3 in aqueous solution. The acid–base properties of Effortil were investigated and discussed. The order of stability of the complexes was investigated and is discussed in terms of the metal ion. The experimental pH titration data were analyzed in order to evaluate the formation constants of various intermediate species formed. The concentration distribution of various species formed in solution was evaluated.

A series of novel 2-(pyridin-4-yl)quinazolin-4(3H)-ones bearing different heterocycle cores as potential PI3K inhibitors have been synthesized and evaluated via the MTT assay for their antiproliferative properties against selected HePG-2, MCF-7, and HCT116 cancer cell lines. Among them, compound 9 displayed significant activity against HePG-2 (IC50 = 60.29 ± 1.06 μM) comparable to doxorubicin as a reference anticancer drug (IC50 = 69.60 ± 1.50 μM). Kinase inhibitory assessment of target products against PI3K and docking studies revealed the promising binding affinities which match with the binding mode of the ligand, SW13 towards the active site of PI3K. Therefore, this work represents a promising matrix for developing novel potential anticancer candidates.

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common problem that is frequently encountered by pediatric healthcare providers. Diagnosis of UTI is often difficult, particularly in critically ill patient and in patients with nonspecific and mild symptoms. Testing for platelet parameters is inexpensive, easily accessible and routinely performed that had been recognized as a hallmark in the diagnosis of platelet activation during infection and inflammatory disorders. Aim: To evaluate the value of platelet parameters in the diagnosis of UTI in children in comparison to interleukin-6. Method: This case–control study included 88 children; 44 of them had culture proved UTI. In addition 44 age and sex matched healthy children served as a control group. Complete blood picture with emphasis on platelet parameters (mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW) and platelet count), C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and interleukin-6 serum levels were done for both groups. We investigated the correlation between platelet parameters, inflammatory biomarkers and the type of organism in children with UTI. Results: Platelet parameters were significantly higher in children with UTI in comparison to those of the control group. There was a significant positive correlation between platelet parameters, ESR, CRP and interleukin-6 in children with UTI. MPV & PDW have 90.1% & 88.6% sensitivity and 86.3% & 84.1% specificity respectively for diagnosis of UTI. Platelet parameters are significantly higher in children with gram positive infection. Conclusion: Platelet indices could be used as an indicator of UTI in children. It could predict the type of causative organism. Further researches are needed to evaluate its role for detection of recurrence of UTI in high risk children.

Background: Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) who have relevant systemic-to-pulmonary shunts will develop pulmonary hypertension (PH) if untreated. With advances in medical research, new biomarkers representing different physiological processes continue to emerge, providing an ever clearer risk profile for patients with PH. Aim: To evaluate the role of serum galectin-3 and heart fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) as early predictive biomarkers of PH in children with ventricular septal defect (VSD). Method: The study included 50 children with VSD; 24 of them had PH and 25 age and sex matched healthy children serve as a control group. Serum levels of galectin-3, H-FABP and echocardiography evaluation were done for all cases and control subjects. We investigated the correlation between these markers and pulmonary pressure in children with VSD. Results: Serum levels of galectin-3 and H-FABP were significantly higher in patients with PH. There was a significant positive correlation between both markers and pulmonary pressure. Galectin-3 and H-FABP have 76%, 60% sensitivity and 80%, 96% specificity respectively for prediction of PH in children with VSD. Conclusion: Galectin-3 and H-FABP are promising cardiac biomarker for prediction and risk stratification of PH in children with VSD.

Crystalline silica inhalation causes silicosis, one of the ancient occupational lung diseases. It leads to an irreversible fibrotic response in the lung parenchyma and, consequently, causes diffuse interstitial lung disease. Asymptomatic to chronic irreversible forms are various presentations of silicosis, which has a high-risk predisposition to various comorbidities. We documented two cases of rare presentations of silica dust exposure alveolar silicoproteinosis and silicotuberculosis.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been found to infect peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), using them as a reservoir, which might contribute to the development of resistance to treatment. Objectives: To study hepatitis virus C (HCV) RNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with chronic HCV infection, and explore the relationship between the HCV RNA in the PBMCs and response to interferon (IFN) therapy. Methods: Twenty-five patients with chronic viral hepatitis C were included. The HCV RNA in PBMCs and serum was detected after 12 weeks of initializing interferon treatment, at the end of treatment, and 24 week and 1 year follow up after the end of the treatment. At the end of the treatment course, patients who were found to have positive PCR test for HCV RNA in PBMCs were subdivided into two groups, one group continues to receive IFN therapy while the other group stops. The HCV RNA in PBMCs and serum was detected by RT-PCR using the Amplicor HCV 2.0 assay. Results: All patients had negative serum PCR test for HCV RNA at the end of treatment, nevertheless HCV RNA was detected in PBMCs of approximately 32% of these patients. Patients who tested positively for HCV RNA in PBMCs at the end of treatment had an overall significantly higher relapse rate (50%) when compared with patients who tested negatively for HCV RNA in both serum and PBMCs at the end of treatment (6%). Patients with positive HCV RNA in their PBMCs who continue to receive interferon based treatment for further six months had a lower relapse rate (25%) when compared with similar patients who stopped interferon treatment at the 48th week (75%). Conclusion: Detection of HCV RNA in PBMCs may be important to assess the virological response to interferon treatment and to predict relapse after antiviral therapy and may be taken as a reference to formulate the duration of antiviral therapy in chronic hepatitis C.

Reinforced concrete (RC) columns in buildings often need strengthening either due to defects in the columns themselves, having to support higher loads than those foreseen in the initial design of the structure, or as the result of ageing or accidental damage. There are many methods of columns strengthening such as jackets with their different types. Jackets are often performed at construction sites by primitive methods, without taking into consideration the correct design or the requirements which should be implemented. At this research, two methods of strengthening have been studied experimentally: concrete jacketing and steel cage. The experimental study consisted of twenty specimens of 800 mm height, 100x100 mm cross section, and main reinforcement 4Ø6 mm with stirrups 7Ø4 mm/800mm. The specimens were strengthened by concrete and steel jackets. From the results of obtained capacity and mode of failure, some modifications were implemented on jacket to improve the efficiency of jackets.

The research objectives are : - Constructing a scale to recognize the most important administrative and technical difficulties faced by the basketball referees in Iraq. - Identifying the degree of the administrative and technical difficulties faced by the basketball referees in Iraq. - Identifying the kind of relationship between the administrative and technical difficulties that face the referees . The researcher has hypothesized the following : - There were administrative and technical difficulties facing the basketball referees in Iraq. - There was a moral significant relationship among the administrative and technical difficulties faced by the referees. The researchers have used the descriptive methodology with survey style for its convenience to the nature of the research. The research community includes basketball referees working in Iraq and holding international certificates , first, second , and third degrees in the branch sport unions for basketball in Iraq as (160) referees. The sample includes two parts : the first part includes the construction sample as (120) referees working with the branch sport unions of basketball in Iraq .The second part includes the application sample as (40) referees . The questionnaire has been used as a means of collecting data .So ,the researchers have constructed a scale of administrative and technical difficulties . The scale includes (43) items .The data were treated statistically by using :the arithmetic mean, standard deviation, percentage law, assumptirn mean, Pearson correlation coefficient, t-Test for two independent samples, Alpha coefficient, Getman equation, and Spearman Brown equation. The important results were : - The validity of the scale of the administrative and technical difficulties faced by the basketball referees working in Iraq. - The degree of the administrative difficulties faced by the basketball referees working in Iraq was (very high) ,while the degree of the technical difficulties faced by the basketball referees working in Iraq was (high) and the degree of both administrative and technical difficulties was (very high ) . - There was a significant relationship between both of the administrative and technical difficulties. - The shortage in the number of basketball referees working in Iraq compared with the comprehensive approach of the central union of basketball and its branches in the governorates .There number was (160) working referees . In the light of the results , the researchers have presented a number of recommendations such as : - Applying the scale of administrative and technical difficulties faced by the basketball referees after being adapted scientifically to other individual or team sport games and activities. - The Iraqi central union of basketball and its branches in the governorates need to remove the administrative and technical difficulties faced by the referees via the coordination with the ministry of youth and sport and the sport clubs participating in the union activities. The researchers have presented the following suggestions : - Making a comparative study of the administrative and technical difficulties faced by the basketball referees working in Iraq to the referees working with other sport unions (individual or team) according to their referring degree . - Working to issue a law of full-time referees for these who work in all sport unions during the sport season to do their tasks in the unions with preserving their formal rights at the establishments where they work in order to grant them chances of creativity. - Calling Iraqi government to increase the annual budget of the Iraqi national Olympic committee in a way that covers all the activities of the central sport unions and their branches in the governorates.

The present paper presents taxonomical information on a small bryozoan fauna collected from the Eastern Mediterranean coast of Egypt. Eight species of benthic bryozoans are reported from the trash crop of a trawling net in the area between Damietta and El-Manzalah. These species belong to 7 genera in 7 families of the orders Cyclostomata, Ctenostomata and Cheilostomata. Four species (Hornera sp., Nolella dilatata, Copidozoum planum and Schizomavella triangularis) are new records of the Egyptian Mediterranean waters. All species are described and photographed.

Using a trawling net, samples of order Pennatulacea (Sea pens) were collected from the northern coast of Egypt. The current work aims to establish taxonomical data about this distinctive group of animals that dwell in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters. The current study presents 3 species namely; Cavernularia pusilla (Philippi, 1835), Pennatula rubra Ellis, 1764, and Pteroeides spinosum (Ellis, 1764). The first one pertains to the family of Veretillidae which belongs to the suborder Sessiliflorae; while the other two species affiliate to two families (Pennatulidae and Pteroeididae) which belong to the suborder Subselliflorae. The present records are the first from the Egyptian Mediterranean waters. A re-description supplied with full structural illustrations of the recorded species is given.

Background: Slow coronary flow (SCF) is defined as late opacification at the epicardial coronary arteries without stenosis, in this study we search the effect of isolated CSF on P-wave and QT-interval dispersion. Patients and methods: Thirty five patients with CSF (group 1), and 30 control subjects (group II) matched in sex and age. Both groups underwent a standard 12-lead surface electrocardiogram. Maximal (P max), minimal P-wave durations (P min), P dispersion (PD), and QT dispersion were measured. All patients underwent selective coronary angiography. Coronary flow rates were documented by Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) frame count. Results: CSF patients had more P maximum, P dispersion, C QT duration, QT dispersion, and C QT dispersion. TIMl frame counts of CSF patients were significantly higher than those of the control group for all three coronary vessels (P 0.0001). PD was positively correlated with LAD TIMI frame count (r = 0.42; P: 0.01); LCx TIMI frame count (r = 0.40; P: 0.01); and mean TIMI frame count (r = 0.44; P: 0.007), while weak correlated with RCA TIMI frame count (r = 0.22; and not statistically significant P: 0.18), C QT dispersion was positively correlated with LAD TIMI frame count (r = 0.54; P: 0.001); LCx TIMI frame count (r = 0.70; P: 0.001); and mean TIMI frame count (r = 0.50; P: 0.002), while weak correlated with RCA TIMI frame count (r = 0.24; and not statistically significant P: 0.15). Conclusion: CSF was found to be associated with prolonged dispersion of P-wave and QT-interval.

Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a popular antifibrinolytic drug that is commonly used in patients with bleeding disorder. Major morbidities and mortalities have been reported following inadvertent intrathecal injection of TXA. In this paper, inadvertent intrathecal injection of TXA has resulted from similarities in appearance between TXA and heavy bupivacaine 0.5% ampoules. The patient experienced severe pain in the back and gluteal region upon injection in association with systemic hypertension and tachycardia followed by generalized myoclonic seizures and ventricular fibrillation.

Background. One-lung ventilation (OLV) during thoracic surgery may induce alveolar cell damage and release of proinflammatory mediators. The current trial was planned to evaluate effect of propofol versus isoflurane anesthesia on alveolar and systemic immune modulation during thoracic surgery. Methods. Fifty adult patients undergoing open thoracic surgery were randomly assigned to receive propofol (𝑛=25) or isoflurane (𝑛=25) anesthesia. The primary outcome measures included alveolar and plasma concentrations of interleukin-8(IL-8) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), whereas secondary outcome measures were alveolar and plasma concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and changes in alveolar albumin concentrations and cell numbers. Results. Alveolar and plasma concentrations of IL-8 and TNF-α were significantly lower in the isoflurane group, whereas alveolar and plasma concentrations of MDA were significantly lower in the propofol group. Alveolar and plasma SOD levels increased significantly in the propofol group whereas they showed no significant change in the isoflurane group. Furthermore, the isoflurane group patients developed significantly lower alveolar albumin concentrations and cell numbers. Conclusion. Isoflurane decreased the inflammatory response associated with OLV during thoracic surgery and may be preferable over propofol in patients with expected high levels of proinflammatory cytokines like cancer patients.
