Diatom-based paleolimnological studies conducted ~25 years ago on five lakes (i.e., Big Rideau, Upper Rideau, Lower Rideau, Indian and Otter lakes) within the Rideau Canal system (Ontario, Canada) tracked extensive catchment disturbances related to canal construction (starting ca. 1828). Over the past three decades, these lakes have experienced additional environmental stressors including invasive zebra mussels and accelerated climate warming, warranting a paleolimnological re-assessment. We examine diatom compositional changes and visible range spectroscopy-inferred chlorophyll-a (VRS-Chla) trends over the past >200 years from sediment cores collected in 2019-2020 from these same lakes, with the aim of assessing environmental changes registered in these records since the original studies were undertaken ~25-30 years ago. Despite large-scale cultural disturbances, including extensive deforestation and flooding for canal construction, the most ecologically notable diatom changes in all sediment records occurred in the past ~25-30 years, and coincided with increases in VRS-Chla. During this recent period, small cyclotelloid and elongate planktonic diatoms increased in relative abundance, while large-celled Aulacoseira taxa declined. Exceptions to this trend include Upper Rideau Lake, where planktonic diatoms were scarce throughout the core and shifts occurred among benthic taxa, and Big Rideau Lake, which has a large littoral zone, where epiphytic diatoms became prominent in the past decade. These recent diatom changes could not be explained by nutrient enrichment, as measured total phosphorus (TP) concentrations have declined significantly since the 1970s. Increases in small planktonic taxa in some of the lakes also pre-date the ca. 1990 arrival of zebra mussels. We conclude that these recent changes were best explained by regional warming and declining wind speed resulting in new lake physical regimes. Such climate-driven changes are also consistent with the recent development of cyanobacterial blooms in these lakes, despite declining nutrient levels.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is often referred to as the “Asian Water Tower”, as it plays a crucial role in supplying water for ∼1.9 billion people. Lakes in this arid mountain region have a wide salinity gradient and are sensitive to the complex interactions between climate and the water cycle, affecting aquatic ecosystems and species distributions. Here, we analyzed relationships between measured environmental variables and the spatial distribution of surface sediment diatom assemblages from 45 lakes located throughout the TP with the intention of developing a diatom-inference model for salinity. Diatom assemblage composition and diversity differed among lakes from the western (W), southern (S), northern (N), and southeastern (E) regions of the TP. The most common taxa observed in the lake set, Pantocsekiella ocellata, Nitzschia palea, and Staurosira venter, tended to have widespread distributions across the TP. In general, diatom diversity and richness tended to be highest in lakes with salinity concentrations between 0.1 and 10 g/L and were lowest in high salinity lakes (>20 g/L) of the N region. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) identified lake water salinity and maximum lake depth as explaining a statistically significant portion of diatom assemblage variation. Weighted-averaging (WA) was used to develop a diatom-based salinity inference model (R2jack = 0.71, RMSEPjack = 0.28) based on diatom optima from freshwater to meso-hyposaline lakes of the TP. Diatom-salinity reconstructions and changes in diatom community composition can potentially be used to track long-term patterns in climate and environmental conditions across the highly complex mountain landscape of the TP.

We examine the role of local environmental and spatial factors in explaining variation in the composition of cladoceran assemblages from surface sediments within a set of 50 lakes spanning a broad southwest to northeast transect across the central Canadian Arctic treeline region from Yellowknife (Northwest Territories) to the northern boundary of the Thelon Game Sanctuary (Nunavut Territory). Within each lake, the cladoceran fauna was identified based on the subfossil exoskeletal remains preserved in recently deposited lake sediments. Physical and chemical limnological data were measured in August of 1996 and 1998. Spatial data were generated based on latitude and longitude using Principal Coordinates of Neighbors Matrices analysis (PCNM). The relationships between cladocerans and the measured environmental and spatial variables were examined using both unconstrained (Principal Components Analysis, PCA) and constrained (Redundancy Analysis, RDA) ordination techniques. Variance partitioning, based on partial RDAs, was used to identify the relative importance of significant environmental and spatial explanatory variables. Three environmental variables were identified as significantly influencing cladoceran community structure: surface water temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total phosphorus (TP). Five PCNM-generated spatial variables were also significant in explaining cladoceran distributions. Variance partitioning attributed 14% of the variance in the distribution of Cladocera to spatial factors, an additional 10% to spatially-structured environmental variables, and 8% to environmental factors that were not spatially-structured. Within the central Canadian Arctic treeline region, spatial and other environmental processes had an important influence on the distribution of cladoceran communities. The strong influence of spatial factors was related to the large ecoclimatic gradient across treeline. The distribution patterns of cladocerans suggest that they have potential for use in paleoenvironmental assessments of northern ecosystems, a region of considerable interest for environmental change research.

Measured environmental variables from 56 lakes across the Central Canadian Treeline Region exhibited clear limnological differences among subpolar ecozones, reflecting strong latitudinal changes in biome characteristics (e.g. vegetation, permafrost, climate). Principal Components Analysis (PCA) clearly separated forested sites from tundra sites based on distinct differences in limnological characteristics. Increases in major ions and related variables (e.g. dissolved inorganic carbon, DIC) were higher in boreal forest sites in comparison to arctic tundra sites. The higher values recorded in the boreal forest lakes may be indirectly related to differences in climatic factors in these zones, such as the degree of permafrost development, higher precipitation and runoff, duration of ice-cover on the lakes, and thicker and better soil development. Similar to trends observed in DIC, substantially higher values for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured in boreal forest lakes than in arctic tundra lakes. This was likely due to higher amounts of catchment-derived DOC entering the lakes from coniferous leaf litter sources. Relative to arctic tundra lakes, boreal forest lakes had higher nutrient concentrations, particularly total nitrogen (TN), likely due to warmer conditions, a longer growing season, and higher precipitation, which would enhance nutrient cycling and primary productivity. Results suggest that modern aquatic environments at opposite sides of the central Canadian arctic treeline (i.e. boreal forest and arctic tundra) exhibit distinct differences in water chemistry and physical conditions. These limnological trends may provide important information on possible future changes with additional warming.

Chironomid and Chaoborus (midge) remains preserved in a dated sediment core from Poplar Bay, Lake of the Woods (LOW), Ontario, Canada, were used to assess the effects of multiple stressors (e.g., recent warming and shoreline development) on water quality over the past ~200 years. As monitoring data for LOW do not extend beyond recent decades, paleolimnological methods are used to reconstruct long-term limnological trends and to establish pre-disturbance conditions. The effects of recent warming and shoreline development on Poplar Bay water quality are examined using an index of hypolimnetic oxygen (O2) status based on the ratio of Chaoborus to chironomid remains (chaob:chir) and a midge-inferred volume-weighted hypolimnetic oxygen (VWHO) model.
