Abstract To design a wooden satellite and select the appropriate wood species, we conducted a space exposure test of wood on the International Space Station (ISS). The space exposure test used the Japanese Experiment Module “Kibo” on the Exposed Experiment Bracket Attached on i-SEEP (ExBAS), which is connected to the exposed facility of the ISS. Three wood species considered candidates for the structure of a wooden satellite were used in the exposure test: honoki (Magnolia obovata), yamazakura (Cerasus jamasakura), and dakekanba (Betula ermanii). In the outgassing test conducted in preparation for the space exposure test, the collected volatile condensable materials (CVCM) of the three wood species were below the critical value; however, the total mass loss (TML) exceeded the critical value. However, this was not a problem, because most of the mass loss was due to water evaporation. A space exposure test was conducted for 10 months in 2022. Consequently, no change was observed in the weight of the exposed specimen, and no erosion due to atomic oxygen (AO) was observed. The exposure test was scheduled to be carried out in the forward direction of the ISS travel; however, owing to equipment trouble, it was installed in the opposite direction. This is because an insufficient AO flux collided with the specimen. In terms of wood color, the brightness of the three species decreased owing to space exposure, and saturation increased in two wood species, except for yamazakura. A thin-film layer was observed on the surface of the aluminum cover to which the exposed specimen was fixed, which may have also formed on the surface of the wood specimen, reducing its brightness. However, because the hue angle did not change significantly, only a slight deterioration of the surface layer owing to vacuum ultraviolet was observed. The results confirmed that the wood had hardly deteriorated in space for approximately 10 months.

Abstract Aims No solid evidence‐based opinion was raised regarding predictors of the degree of ascites reduction with tolvaptan. This retrospective cohort study aimed to examine whether serum copeptin concentration is a useful predictor of this. Methods The study population consisted of 80 patients with liver cirrhosis treated with tolvaptan for hepatic ascites effusions at Nara Medical University Hospital from May 2014 to December 2018. Forty‐three patients who lost >1.5 kg of body weight in the first week after starting tolvaptan were classified as good responders and the remaining 37 as poor responders. Various laboratory parameters were measured immediately before the start of tolvaptan therapy to examine factors associated with predicting its efficacy. Results In the univariate analysis, no significant differences with respect to age (67.6 vs. 69.8 years, p > 0.05), sex, body mass index (24.8 vs. 23.7 kg/m2, p > 0.05), Child–Pugh score (9.4 vs. 9.7, p > 0.05), and Model for End‐stage Liver Disease score (11 vs. 12, p > 0.05) were found between the two groups. Abstract The stress relaxation behavior and cell wall microstructure of sugi were evaluated after thermal modification. Stress relaxation is observed and has a broad relaxation spectrum, implying various relaxation mechanisms. The relaxation was analyzed using a stretched exponential function, namely, the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts (KWW) function, which contains two parameters. Moreover, the structure of the amorphous phase in the cell wall was examined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis using the mass fractal dimension. The variation in the relaxation spectrum reduced, and the specific relaxation time increased by thermal modification at 220 °C. The mass fractal dimension in SAXS increased owing to modification, indicating that the structure of the cell wall includes some defects between cellulose microfibrils. The mass fractal dimension was related to the relaxation parameter of the KWW function. Considering the change in crystallinity, the amorphous phase in the cell wall decomposed and condensed by thermal decomposition, which caused a longer relaxation time. Thus, the KWW function may be used to evaluate the stress relaxation behavior of wood, and the mass fractal dimension in SAXS can indicate the amorphous structure in the cell wall.

Telescopic sunspot observations began in 1610 and captured subsequent solar cycles. In combination with proxy reconstructions on an annual scale, these data sets indicate a gradual transition between regular solar cycles and the Maunder Minimum. The telescopic sunspot observations missed the beginning of the first telescopic solar cycle (Solar Cycle −13), leaving room for considerable uncertainty as to its temporal evolution. Before these early telescopic observations, however, Kepler made solar observations using camerae obscurae and recorded a sunspot group in three solar drawings in 1607. Here, we make use of Kepler’s sunspot drawings and descriptive texts to identify his observational sites and time stamps. We have deprojected his sunspot drawings and compared the reported positions with our calculations of the inclination of the solar equator as seen from these sites at that time. These results locate the reported sunspot group near the solar equator eastward from the central meridian. This contrasts with telescopic sunspot drawings from the 1610s that show sunspot groups in the higher heliographic latitudes. Therefore, what Kepler saw was probably a sunspot group from Solar Cycle −14, rather than one from Solar Cycle −13. These records allow us to place the beginning of Solar Cycle −13 between 1607 and 1610. In comparison with the ^14 C-based solar-cycle reconstructions, our result supports regular solar-cycle durations around the 1610s, rather than any suggested extreme extensions of the solar-cycle duration(s) around the 1610s.

Abstract Objectives Serial pancreatic juice aspiration cytological examination (SPACE) via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is a useful diagnostic method for early‐stage pancreatic cancer, such as carcinoma in situ that are difficult to diagnose by endoscopic ultrasound‐guided fine needle aspiration (EUS‐FNA). However, the diagnostic accuracy of SPACE is low, which is attributed to problems regarding specimen treatment. Hence, we evaluated the diagnostic efficacy of liquid‐based cytology (LBC) in pancreatic juice cytology for pancreatic cancer. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 24 patients with suspected pancreatic cancer that was difficult to diagnose by endoscopic ultrasound‐guided fine needle aspiration who underwent SPACE using LBC between April 2017 and April 2021. Results The most common reason for performing SPACE was localized stenosis of the main pancreatic duct without a mass. Eleven patients were diagnosed with malignancy after surgical resection, nine of whom had pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Ten patients were diagnosed as benign after a follow‐up of more than 1 year. The nine cases of malignancy were diagnosed before surgical resection by SPACE using LBC, with a sensitivity of 81.8% and specificity of 100%. The overall diagnostic accuracy was 91.7%. A total of 152 LBC examinations were performed via SPACE, with an adequate sample collection rate of 88.9%. No adverse events, including acute pancreatitis, occurred after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Conclusion SPACE with LBC offers good diagnostic efficacy in patients with pancreatic cancer that is difficult to diagnose by endoscopic ultrasound‐guided fine needle aspiration.

Abstract Over the past few decades, the sustainable forest area in China has increased remarkably, with 2400 million cubic meters of eucalyptus produced in 2018 in Guangxi which is the largest plantation area in China. In this study, the effect of alternating lamination using soft poplar veneers and hard eucalyptus veneers, on the mechanical properties of laminated veneer lumber (LVL), was examined. Eucalyptus and poplar veneers were imported from China to Japan to manufacture the LVL. For both eucalyptus and poplar veneers, the pith side (innerwood) sheets were lighter in density than the bark side (outerwood) sheets. The specific Young’s modulus of alternating LVL with hard eucalyptus veneers and soft poplar veneers was smaller than that of the mono-species LVL of eucalyptus and poplar. Strain distributions were obtained with the compression test by using the digital image correlation method. Normal strains showed that the hard eucalyptus layer behaved as a thin plate, whereas the soft poplar layer mitigated the movement of the hard eucalyptus layer. Alternating lamination decreased the variation in the elastic modulus of LVL made from fast-growing species. Therefore, the soft layers mitigated the movement of the hard layers, which had large variations in mechanical properties.

Abstract The study involved proposing a tuned mass damper (TMD) system with a novel mechanism for supporting the mass, which is called the two‐phase support (TPS) mechanism. The system can make the configuration of a TMD compact with low frictional characteristics; the TMD can operate effectively during not only earthquakes, but also strong winds in the interior of an existing building. The TPS mechanism consists of multi‐stage rubber bearings (MRBs) and linear motion bearings (LMBs). Each LMB is equipped with a vertical clearance of a few millimeters in its block portion. LMBs do not support the mass under small deformations of the MRBs so that the TMD can achieve low friction. Conversely, LMBs support the mass under large deformations of the MRBs, hence slender MRBs do not buckle and function as horizontal springs. We describe two types of experiments, namely experiments using a small specimen and tests using an actual TMD with a large mass of 7000 kN. We verified that the slender MRBs functioned without buckling and stably as restoring springs through the TPS mechanism even when large deformations occurred. Furthermore, we confirmed that the frictional and dynamic characteristics of the TMD agreed with the desired ones.

Background: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (γ-GTP) to assess the single and combined benefits of these biological markers for the detection of chronic excessive alcohol consumption in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. Methods: Biological markers were determined in blood samples from patients with alcoholic cirrhosis (drinking group, n = 35; nondrinking group, n = 81). The prediction accuracy of %CDT alone, γ-GTP alone, and their combination for the detection of excessive alcohol consumption was determined in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. Results: Serum total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-GTP, and alkaline phosphatase levels and %CDT were significantly higher and serum albumin levels were significantly lower in the drinking group than in the nondrinking group. The combination of %CDT and γ-GTP compared with %CDT or γ-GTP alone showed a higher prediction accuracy. The combination of %CDT and γ-GTP exhibited a higher specificity than γ-GTP alone. However, in terms of sensitivity, no significant difference was found between single or combined markers. Conclusions: The combination of %CDT and γ-GTP is considered a useful biomarker of chronic excessive alcohol consumption in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis.

Human parvovirus (HPV) B19 is linked to a variety of clinical manifestations, such as erythema infectiosum, nonimmune hydrops fetalis, and transient aplastic anemia. Although a few cases have shown HPVB19 infection as a possible causative agent for hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (HAAA) in immunocompetent patients, most reported cases of HAAA following transient hepatitis did not have delayed remission. Here we report a rare case of severe aplastic anemia following acute hepatitis with prolonged jaundice due to HPVB19 infection in a previously healthy young male. Clinical laboratory examination assessed marked liver injury and jaundice as well as peripheral pancytopenia, and bone marrow biopsy revealed severe hypoplasia and fatty replacement. HPVB19 infection was diagnosed by enzyme immunoassay with high titer of anti-HPVB19 immunoglobulin M antibodies. Immunosuppressive therapy was initiated 2 months after the onset of acute hepatitis when liver injury and jaundice were improved. Cyclosporine provided partial remission after 2 months of medication without bone marrow transplantation. Our case suggests that HPVB19 should be considered as a hepatotropic virus and a cause of acquired aplastic anemia, including HAAA.
