Abstract Monitoring and predicting the regional groundwater storage (GWS) fluctuation is an essential support for effectively managing water resources. Therefore, taking Shandong Province as an example, the data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO) is used to invert GWS fluctuation from January 2003 to December 2022 together with Watergap Global Hydrological Model (WGHM), in-situ groundwater volume and level data. The spatio-temporal characteristics are decomposed using Independent Components Analysis (ICA), and the impact factors, such as precipitation and human activities, which are also analyzed. To predict the short-time changes of GWS, the Support Vector Machines (SVM) is adopted together with three commonly used methods Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA), Auto-Regressive Moving Average Model (ARMA), as the comparison. The results show that: (1) The loss intensity of western GWS is significantly greater than those in coastal areas. From 2003 to 2006, GWS increased sharply; during 2007 to 2014, there exists a loss rate − 5.80 ± 2.28 mm/a of GWS; the linear trend of GWS change is − 5.39 ± 3.65 mm/a from 2015 to 2022, may be mainly due to the effect of South-to-North Water Diversion Project. The correlation coefficient between GRACE and WGHM is 0.67, which is consistent with in-situ groundwater volume and level. (2) The GWS has higher positive correlation with monthly Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) considering time delay after moving average, which has the similar energy spectrum depending on Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) method. In addition, the influencing facotrs on annual GWS fluctuation are analyzed, the correlation coefficient between GWS and in-situ data including the consumption of groundwater mining, farmland irrigation is 0.80, 0.71, respectively. (3) For the GWS prediction, SVM method is adopted to analyze, three training samples with 180, 204 and 228 months are established with the goodness-of-fit all higher than 0.97. The correlation coefficients are 0.56, 0.75, 0.68; RMSE is 5.26, 4.42, 5.65 mm; NSE is 0.28, 0.43, 0.36, respectively. The performance of SVM model is better than the other methods for the short-term prediction.

The phase reduction approach has manifested its efficacy in investigating synchronization behaviors in limit-cycle oscillators. However, spatial distributions of the phase value on the limit cycle may lead to illusions of synchronizations for oscillators close to bifurcations. In this paper, we compared the phase sensitivity function in the spatial domain and time domain for oscillators close to saddle-node homoclinic (SNH) bifurcation, also known as saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle. It was found that the phase sensitivity function in the spatial domain can show the phase accumulation feature on the limit cycle, which can be ignored in the phase sensitivity function in the time domain. As an example, the synchronization distributions of uncoupled SNH oscillators driven by common and independent noises were investigated, where the space-dependent coupling function was considered on common noise. These results shed some light on the phase dynamics of oscillators close to bifurcations.

Noise can shape the firing behaviors of neurons. Here, we show that noise acting on the fast variable of the Hedgehog burster can tune the spike counts of bursts via the self-induced stochastic resonance (SISR) phenomenon. Using the distance matching condition, the critical transition positions on the slow manifolds can be predicted and the stochastic periodic orbits for various noise strengths are obtained. The critical transition positions on the slow manifold with non-monotonic potential differences exhibit a staircase-like dependence on the noise strength, which is also revealed by the stepwise change in the period of the stochastic periodic orbit. The noise-tuned bursting is more coherent within each step while displaying mixed-mode oscillations near the boundaries between the steps. When noise is large enough, noise-induced trapping of the slow variable can be observed, where the number of coexisting traps increases with the noise strength. It is argued that the robustness of SISR underlies the generality of the results discovered in this paper.

Noise can induce coherent oscillations in excitable systems without periodic orbits. Here, we establish a method to derive a hybrid system approximating the noise-induced coherent oscillations in excitable systems and further perform phase reduction of the hybrid system to derive an effective, dimensionality-reduced phase equation. We apply the reduced phase model to a periodically forced excitable system and two-coupled excitable systems, both undergoing noise-induced oscillations. The reduced phase model can quantitatively predict the entrainment of a single system to the periodic force and the mutual synchronization of two coupled systems, including the phase slipping behavior due to noise, as verified by Monte Carlo simulations. The derived phase model gives a simple and efficient description of noise-induced oscillations and can be applied to the analysis of more general cases.

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms contribute to phenotypic diversity in maize. Creation and functional annotation of point mutations has been limited by the low efficiency of conventional methods based on random mutation. An efficient tool for generating targeted single-base mutations is desirable for both functional genomics and precise genetic improvement. The objective of this study was to test the efficiency of targeted C-to-T base editing of two non-allelic acetolactate synthase (ALS) in generating sulfonylurea herbicide-resistant mutants. A CRISPR/Cas9 nickase-cytidine deaminase fused with uracil DNA glycosylase inhibitor (UGI) was employed to achieve targeted conversion of cytosine to thymine in ZmALS1 and ZmALS2. Both protoplasts and recovered mutant plants showed the activity of the cytosine base editor, with an in vivo efficiency of up to 13.8%. Transgene-free edited plants harboring a homozygous ZmALS1 mutation or a ZmALS1 and ZmALS2 double mutation were tested for their resistance at a dose of up to 15-fold the recommended limit of chlorsulfuron, a sulfonylurea herbicide widely used in agriculture. Targeted base editing of C-to-T per se and a phenotype verified in the generated mutants demonstrates the power of base editing in precise maize breeding.

Waxy maize is a specialty maize that produces mainly amylopectin starch with special food or industrial values. The objective of this study was to overcome the limitations of wx mutant allele acquisition and breeding efficiency by conversion of parental lines from normal to waxy maize. The intended mutation activity was achieved by in vivo CRISPR/Cas9 machinery involving desired-target mutation of the Wx locus in the ZC01 background, abbreviated as ZC01-DTMwx. Triple selection was applied to segregants to obtain high genome background recovery with transgene-free wx mutations. The targeted mutation was identified, yielding six types of mutations among progeny crossed with ZC01-DTMwx. A previous study investigates the advertising strategies of the platform and App by assuming that the platform’s advertisement will increase the number of the App’s users, but the App’s advertisement will not increase the number of the platform’s users; and the platform overcharges the App and takes the advertising fee as a source of its revenue. However, the existing users of the App may recommend the App to the users who have not used it. As a result, the App’s advertisement may increase the number of the platform’s users. Additionally, it is not reasonable that the platform takes the advertising fee of the App as a source of its revenue. These motivate us to reanalyze the previous work. This paper reanalyzes the previous work by additionally assuming that the App’s advertisement will increase the number of the platform’s users and assuming that the platform receives its revenue from its users and shares a proportion of the App’s sales revenue and the App receives its revenues from its users and a proportion of its advertising cost subsidized by the platform. We find that these new assumptions have some significant effects on the previous results. We use dynamical optimization approaches to analyze a decentralized system and find the two parties’ optimal advertisement efforts and proportions. To achieve the efficiency of the integrated system that is proved to be more efficient than the decentralized system, we design a bilateral advertising contact for the decentralized system and show that there exists a unique contact that can coordinate the decentralized system. We find that both parties are better off under some mild conditions and the proportion that the platform bears the App’s advertising cost becomes greater with the contract than without the contract. We have gained some managerial insights.

The asymptotic phase is a fundamental quantity for the analysis of deterministic limit-cycle oscillators, and generalized definitions of the asymptotic phase for stochastic oscillators have also been proposed. In this article, we show that the asymptotic phase and also amplitude can be defined for classical and semiclassical stochastic oscillators in a natural and unified manner by using the eigenfunctions of the Koopman operator of the system. We show that the proposed definition gives appropriate values of the phase and amplitude for strongly stochastic limit-cycle oscillators, excitable systems undergoing noise-induced oscillations, and also for quantum limit-cycle oscillators in the semiclassical regime.

In this study, we report three cases of sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease in China, two confirmed cases and one probable case. The aim of this study was to enrich the data regarding clinical and epidemiological features of this disease and to provide reference for the diagnosis, control, and prevention of sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease.

Noise is ubiquitous in various systems. In systems with multiple timescales, noise can induce various coherent behaviors. Self-induced stochastic resonance (SISR) is a typical noise-induced phenomenon identified in such systems, wherein noise acting on the fast subsystem causes stochastic resonancelike boundary crossings. In this paper, we analyze the stochastic periodic orbits caused by SISR in fast-slow systems. By introducing the notion of the mean first passage velocity toward the boundary, a distance-matching condition is established, through which the critical transition position of boundary crossing can be calculated. The theoretical stochastic periodic orbit can be accordingly obtained via gluing the dynamics along the slow manifolds. It is shown that the theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with the results of Monte Carlo simulations for a piecewise linear FitzHugh-Nagumo system even for large noise. Furthermore, the proposed method is extended to the original FitzHugh-Nagumo system and also found to exhibit consistent accuracy. These results provide insights into the mechanisms of coherent behaviors in fast-slow systems and will shed light on the coherent behaviors in more complex systems and large networks.

Leaf width (LW) influences canopy architecture of population-cultured maize and can thus contribute to density breeding. In previous studies, almost all maize LW-related mutants have extreme effect on leaf development or accompanied unfavorable phenotypes. In addition, the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) has been resolution-limited, with cloning and fine-mapping rarely performed. Here, we constructed a bin map for 670 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) using ∼1.2 billion 100-bp re-sequencing reads. QTL analysis of the LW trait directly narrowed the major effect QTL, qLW4, to a ∼270-kb interval. A fine-mapping population and near-isogenic lines (NILs) were quickly constructed using a key RIL harboring heterozygous genotypes across the qLW4 region. A recombinant-derived progeny testing strategy was subsequently used to further fine-map qLW4 to a 55-kb interval. Examination of NILs revealed that qLW4 has a completely dominant effect on LW, with no additional effect on leaf length. Candidate gene analysis suggested that this locus may be a novel LW controlling allele in maize. Our findings demonstrate the advantage of large-population high-density bin mapping, and suggest a strategy for efficiently fine-mapping or even cloning of QTLs. These results should also be helpful for further dissection of the genetic mechanism of LW variation, and benefit maize density breeding.

Decreased physical performance and impaired physiological and psychological fitness have been reported in patients with acute leukemia (AL). We performed a meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of exercise in patients with AL.In this meta-analysis, the electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL and PEDro were searched through November 2015. Three authors participated in the study selection, data extraction and quality assessment. The instrument used for quality assessment was derived from the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Analyses were performed according to the recommendations of The Cochrane Collaboration using Review Manager 5.3.Nine trials (8 randomized controlled trials and 1 quasi-experimental design trial) with 314 AL participants were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled standardized mean differences between the exercise and control groups were 0.45 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.09 to 0.80, P value = 0.01, P for heterogeneity = 0.23, I2 = 28%) for cardiorespiratory fitness and 0.67 (95% CI: 0.28 to 1.06, P value = 0.0007, P for heterogeneity = 0.14, I2 = 43%) for muscle strength. Based on the data for fatigue, anxiety, and depression, there were no significant differences in these parameters between the exercise and control groups.Exercise has beneficial effects on cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength and functional mobility; however, no significant improvements in fatigue, anxiety, depression or quality of life were observed. Further large-scale randomized trials are needed to assess the safety, feasibility and efficacy of exercise programs for AL patients.
