In order to study the characteristics of P-wave velocity and resistivity of loess with different moisture contents, low-field nuclear magnetic resonance, resistivity, and P-wave velocity tests were carried out on loess samples with 11 different moisture contents. The test results show that under the condition of the same dry density, the water in loess exists in two forms: bound water and free water. With the increase in moisture content, the water porosity of loess increases, the proportion of free water increases, and the resistivity gradually decreases and then tends to be stable, showing a power function relationship with moisture content. When the moisture content is less than 20%, the P-wave velocity decreases with the increase in the moisture content. In comparison, when the moisture content is greater than 20%, the wave velocity increases with the increase in the moisture content. A modified relation between wave velocity and moisture content and saturation is put forward, and the relationship expression between wave velocity and resistivity of loess is established. Finally, the reliability is verified by experimental data. The research results have a certain guiding significance for real-time monitoring of loess moisture content and engineering stability analysis in the loess area.

To investigate the influencing factors and mechanisms of shear strength of red clay with a high liquid limit, which was selected at different milepost locations based on the Nanning Bobai Nabu Section Project of the Nanning Zhanjiang Expressway, the basic physical properties of red clay were determined using a liquid plastic limit test, compaction test, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), and X-ray fully automatic diffractometer (XRD). Red clay with a high liquid limit was selected. Furthermore, the direct shear test was used to study the effect of different water contents and compaction degrees on the shear strength. The experimental results demonstrate that under the same compaction degree, the shear stress of the soil sample increases significantly with an increase in normal stress, and the greater the water content, the smaller the shear stress of the soil sample. At 200 kPa, the shear strength of soil samples with 24% water content is 57%, 46%, and 35% of the shear strength of soil samples with 15% water content under different compaction degrees(K) of 86%, 90%, and 93%, respectively. Under the same moisture content, the shear stress of the soil sample shows an increasing trend with an increase in the degree of compaction, and the greater the compaction degrees, the greater the shear stress of the soil sample. The cohesion c and internal friction angle φ of soil samples increase with an increase in the compaction degree, but the increase in cohesion c is also affected by the water content. Under the condition of low water content, the cohesion c of soil samples can be increased by 1.06 times when the water content is 15% and by 0.47 times when the water content is 18%. Under the condition of high water content, the cohesion c of soil samples with 21% water content only increases by 0.3 times, and that with 24% water content only increases by 0.35 times.

Aeolian sand is widely distributed in the Takramagan Desert, Xinjiang, China, which cannot be directly used as railway subgrade filling. It is beneficial for environmental protection to use fiber and cement-reinforced aeolian sand as railway subgrade filling. The present work is to explore the enhancement of tensile strength in cemented aeolian sand via the incorporation of polypropylene fibers under conditions of elevated temperature and drying curing. The purpose Is to delve into the examination of the temperature’s impact on not only the mechanical attributes but also the microstructure of cemented aeolian sand reinforced with polypropylene fiber (CSRPF). For this, a comprehensive set of tests encompassing splitting tensile strength (STS) assessments and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) examinations is conducted. A total of 252 CSRPF specimens with varying fiber content (0, 6‰, 8‰, and 10‰) are tested at different curing temperatures (30 °C, 40 °C, 50 °C, 60 °C, 70 °C, and 80 °C). The outcomes of the NMR examinations indicate that elevating the curing temperature induces the expansion of pores within CSRPF, both in size and volume, consequently contributing to heightened internal structural deterioration. STS tests demonstrate that the STS of CSRPF decreases as the curing temperature increases. Meanwhile, the STS of CSRPF increases with fiber content, with optimal fiber content being 8‰. Regression models accurately predict the STS, with the curing temperature exhibiting the greatest influence, followed by the fiber content according to sensitivity analysis. The research results provide a valuable reference for the use of CSRPF as railway subgrade filling under high temperature and drying conditions.

Abstract Tortuosity is an important parameter for studying the permeability of soil. Existing studies of soil tortuosity are usually of empirical nature and attempt to relate tortuosity to soil porosity alone. By assuming a laminar flow through the pores of two‐dimensional square solid particles, we present a mathematical model for calculating soil tortuosity under different particle arrangements. The effect of the randomness of the particle arrangement on the tortuosity is evaluated, which generates the variation range of the tortuosity. The proposed model provides the upper and lower bounds of the tortuosity, while existing empirical models tend to fall within these bounds. The consistency between the proposed model and the numerical calculation provides a validity for the proposed model.

A series of triaxial compression tests were conducted to investigate the influence of the fiber content and confining pressure on the shearing characteristics of cement-stabilized clay reinforced with glass fibers. The glass fiber contents were 0, 1‰, 2‰, 3‰, and 4‰ by weight of the dry soil. The stress strain and volume change behavior, shear strength, and energy absorption of the test specimen were obtained. The results indicate that the inclusion of glass fibers can increase the shear strength, inhibit the volumetric dilation of the test specimen, and improve its brittle behavior. The cohesion of the cement-stabilized clay reinforced with 4‰ glass fiber content is 2.8 times greater than that of the cement-stabilized clay. The effect of the fiber content on the friction angle is not obvious. It is found that the glass fiber reinforcement is more substantial under a low confining pressure. The scanning electron microscopy test results show that the surface of the glass fiber is wrapped with cement hydrate crystals, which increases the bite force and friction between the fiber and the soil particles. A single fiber is similar to an anchor in the soil, which enhances the mechanical properties of the cement-stabilized clay reinforced with fibers.

In recent studies, vapour transfer is reported to lead to remarkable frost heave in unsaturated soils, but how to better model this process has not been answered. In order to avoid the great uncertainty caused by the phase change term of vapour-water-ice in the numerical iteration process, a new numerical model is developed based on the coupled thermal and hydrological processes. The new model avoids using the local equilibrium assumption and the hydraulic relations that accounts for liquid water flow, which provides a new way for the water-heat coupling movement problem. The model is established by using COMSOL Multiphysics, which is a multiphysics simulation software through finite element analysis. The model is evaluated by comparing simulated results with data from column freezing experiments for unsaturated coarse-grained soils. Simulated values of the total water content compare well with experimental values. The model is proved to be applicable and numerically stable for a high-speed railway subgrade involving simultaneous heat and moisture transport. An agreement can be found between the predicted and measured frost/thawed depth and soil moisture profiles, demonstrating that the model is able to simulate rapidly changing boundary conditions and nonlinear water content profiles in the soil.

A series of laboratory tests were performed to investigate the influences of specimen preparation on pore size distribution of soil and saturated hydraulic conductivity (). Nuclear magnetic resonance technology was used to measure the pore size distribution of the saturated samples of silty soil, which were prepared by three different kinds of methods: Proctor compaction, static compaction, and the consolidation method. The of the samples was measured by the falling head permeability test. The results show that the difference in caused by different specimen preparations can be large as one order of magnitude, as the measured varied from 3.09 × 10 to 3.36 × 10 cm s. The consolidated specimen tended to have the greatest value, followed by those prepared by Proctor compaction and static compaction. The observed difference highlights the importance of pore structure in determining . This study also presents a pore-information-based theoretical approach for predicting . A comparison of measured data shows that the proposed model performs better than the traditional void-ratio-based models.

Dynamic compaction (DC) is commonly used to strengthen the coarse grained soil foundation, where particle breakage of coarse soils is unavoidable under high-energy impacts. In this paper, a novel method of modeling DC progress was developed, which can realize particle breakage by impact stress. A particle failure criterion of critical stress is first employed. The “population balance” between particles before and after crushing is guaranteed by the overlapping method. The performance of the DC model is successfully validated against literature data. A series of DC tests were then carried out. The effect of particle breakage on key parameters of DC including crater depth and impact stress was discussed. Besides, it is observed that the relationship between breakage amount and tamping times can be expressed by a logarithmic curve. The present method will contribute to a better understanding of DC and benefit further research on the macro-micro mechanism of DC.
