To improve the predictive capability of a nuclear thermal hydraulic safety analysis code by developing a better constitutive equation for individual phenomenon has been the general research direction until now. This paper proposes a new method to directly use complex experimental data obtained from integral effect test (IET) to improve constitutive models holistically and simultaneously. The method relies on the sensitivity of a simulation result of IET data to the multiple constitutive equations utilized during the simulation, and the sensitivity of individual model determines the direction of modification for the constitutive model. To develop a robust and generalized method, a clustering algorithm using an artificial neural network, sample space size determination using non-parametric statistics, and sampling method of Latin hypercube sampling are used in a combined manner. The value of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by applying the method to the ATLAS DSP-05 IET experiment. A sensitivity of each observation parameter to the constitutive models is analyzed. The new methodology suggested in the study can be used to improve the code prediction results of complex IET data by identifying the direction for constitutive equations to be modified.

This paper proposes a flooding safety system (FSS) and its operation strategy that can provide long-term safety and effective maintenance for modules of small modular reactor (SMR) and metal containment maintained at dried environment during normal operation. During hypothesized accidents, the FSS re-collects the evaporated steam into the common pool by the condenser installed above the common water pool and provides an emergency coolant for the cavities and auxiliary pools. This study suggested that the condensate re-collection strategy using the FSS can effectively delay the depletion of available water in response to the accidents. Without re-collection, the achievable grace periods ranged from 44 to 1507 days for six-module and one-module accidents, respectively. However, with a full re-collection (ratio = 1.0), the time to total depletion of emergency coolant was estimated indefinite. Even with a partial re-collection ratio of 0.3, a grace period of 83.5 days could be ensured for a six-module transient. This study reported the effectiveness of condensate re-collection and the FSS as an innovative safety management strategy and system. Employing a condensate re-collection strategy with a high re-collection ratio can enhance the long-term safety and effective convenience of SMR operations and maintenance.

This study investigates the application of supercritical carbon dioxide (S–CO2) direct-cycle micro modular reactors (MMRs) in primary frequency control (PFC), which is a scenario characterized by significant load fluctuations that has received less attention compared to secondary load-following. Using a modified GAMMA + code and a deep neural network–based turbomachinery off-design model, the authors conducted an analysis to assess the behavior of the reactor core and fluid system under different PFC scenarios. The results indicate that the acceptable range for sudden relative electricity output (REO) fluctuations is approximately 20%p which aligns with the performance of combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) and open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs). In S–CO2 direct-cycle MMRs, the control of the core operates passively within the operational range by managing coolant density through inventory control. However, when PFC exceeds 35%p, system control failure is observed, suggesting the need for improved control strategies. These findings affirm the potential of S–CO2 direct-cycle MMRs in PFC operations, representing an advancement in the management of grid fluctuations while ensuring reliable and carbon-free power generation.

In contrast to all-time flooded small modular reactor (SMR) systems, an in-kind flooding safety system (FSS) has been proposed as a passive safety system applicable to small modular reactors (SMRs) that adopt a metal containment vessel (MCV). Under transient conditions, the FSS can provide emergency cooling to dry reactor cavities and sustain long-term coolability using re-acquired evaporated steam in the reactor building on demand. When designing an FSS, the effect of the flooding flow area is vital as it affects the overall accident sequence and safety. Therefore, in this study, a MELCOR model of a reference SMR is developed and numerical analysis is performed under postulated accident scenarios. Without flooding, the MCV pressure of the reactor module exceeds the design pressure before core damage. To prevent core damage, an emergency flooding strategy is devised using various flow path parameters and requirements to ensure an adequate emergency coolant supply before the core damage is investigated. The results indicate that a flow area exceeding 0.02 m2 is required in the FSS to prevent MCV overpressure and core damage. This study is the first to report a strategic analysis for appropriately sizing an FSS flooding valve applicable to innovative SMRs.

The small, simple, and effective characteristics of a Supercritical CO2 (S–CO2) power system make it an ideal candidate for distributed power generation. However, the distributed power generation will be required with constant changes in the operating conditions to meet the varying demand. Thus, it is necessary for the S–CO2 power system to demonstrate that it can operate safely and efficiently under all anticipated operating conditions. One of the key issues in the S–CO2 power system is controlling the compressor inlet conditions. This paper focused on the control of the compressor inlet temperature. In this paper, a system dynamic simulation code is used to model the precooler system for the compressor inlet control first. Based on the analysis results to obtain the transfer function and the state space, a linear quadratic controller was designed using optimal control theory. Since the controller was estimated to have steady-state error, a disturbance observer was also used. To validate the designed controller, experiments were conducted. The experimental results show that the proposed controller can be used to maintain the S–CO2 compressor inlet conditions under various transient scenarios without additional tuning.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has been actively applied in veterinary regenerative medicine to treat various canine and feline diseases. With increasing emphasis on safe cell-based therapies, evaluations of their tumorigenic potential are in great demand. However, a direct confirmation of whether tumors originate from stem cells or host cells is not easily achievable. Additionally, previous studies evaluating injections of high doses of MSCs into nude mice did not demonstrate tumor formation. Recent research focused on optimizing MSC-based therapies for veterinary patients, such as MSC-derived extracellular vesicles in treating different diseases. This progress also signifies a broader shift towards personalized veterinary medicine, where treatments can be tailored to individual pets based on their unique genetic profiles. These findings related to different treatments using MSCs emphasize their future potential for veterinary clinical applications. In summary, because of lower tumor-associated risk of MSCs as compared to embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells, MSCs are considered a suitable source for treating various canine and feline diseases.

This study analyzes the residual demand curves of 42 countries under five scenarios with varying variable renewable energy (VRE) levels to observe how replacing coal with VRE can alter the demand curve. Using 2018 demand data, the residual demand was calculated and analyzed by subtracting the VRE supply curve from the demand curve. The operational requirements for low-carbon load-following sources amid high VRE penetration are examined. Key findings indicate that substantial peak residual demand persists even with 70% energy from VREs, emphasizing the need for significant load-following resources. Transitioning to a 70% VRE scenario could reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 16.799 billion tons, advancing towards carbon neutrality. However, this benefit depends on maintaining grid stability, highlighting the importance of adequate load-following plants to manage VRE intermittency. Countries like Malaysia, South Korea, Tunisia, the UK, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Libya face higher load-following demands due to specific renewable energy contexts. This study reveals varying renewable energy environments across countries, suggesting that a universal strategy for carbon neutrality and replacing coal may not be feasible. Each nation must develop its own approach to emission reduction, considering its unique conditions. This research emphasizes the urgent need for developing cost-effective, flexible, low-carbon load-following sources to enhance decarbonization potential globally.

Instabilities such as stall and surge have been widely studied in open loop gas turbine system for several decades. However, researches on instabilities in a closed loop are limited. Especially, no experimental investigation in a supercritical CO2 compressor has been performed thoroughly before. An integral test loop equipped with a turbo-alternator-compressor using active magnetic bearing was utilized to study the instabilities in a supercritical CO2 compressor. The compressor performance testing was conducted including near stall and surge operating conditions. The mass flow rate of compressor was greatly reduced even beyond surge limit and pressure was measured with high frequency transducer to observe the characteristics. It was observed that as the inertia of the system was changed by altering the compressor inlet conditions, the characteristics of the supercritical CO2 compressor in unstable operating conditions also vary. This can be qualitatively explained by using the theory Greitzer proposed previously.

Constitutive equations in a nuclear reactor safety analysis code are mostly empirical correlations developed from experiments, which always accompany uncertainties. The accuracy of the code can be improved by modifying the constitutive equations fitting wider range of data with less uncertainty. Thus, the sensitivity of the code with respect to the constitutive equations is evaluated quantitatively in the paper to understand the room for improvement of the code. A new methodology is proposed which first starts by dividing the thermal hydraulic conditions into multiple sub-regimes using self-organizing map (SOM) clustering method. The sensitivity analysis is then conducted by multiplying an arbitrary set of coefficients to the constitutive equations for each sub-divided thermal-hydraulic regime with SOM to observe how the code accuracy varies. The randomly chosen multiplier coefficient represents the uncertainty of the constitutive equations. Furthermore, the set with the smallest error with the selected experimental data can be obtained and can provide insight which direction should the constitutive equations be modified to improve the code accuracy. The newly proposed method is applied to a steady-state experiment and a transient experiment to illustrate how the method can provide insight to the code developer.

Fenbendazole (FZ) is a benzimidazole carbamate drug with broad-spectrum antiparasitic activity in humans and animals. The mechanism of action of FZ is associated with microtubular polymerization inhibition and glucose uptake blockade resulting in reduced glycogen stores and decreased ATP formation in the adult stages of susceptible parasites. A completely cured case of lung cancer became known globally and greatly influenced the cancer community in South Korea. Desperate Korean patients with cancer began self-administering FZ without their physician’s knowledge, which interfered with the outcome of the cancer treatment planned by their oncologists. On the basis of presented evidence, this review provides valuable information from PubMed, Naver, Google Scholar, and Social Network Services (SNS) on the effects of FZ in a broad range of preclinical studies on cancer. In addition, we suggest investigating the self-administration of products, including supplements, herbs, or bioactive compounds, by patients to circumvent waiting for long and costly FZ clinical trials.

Nuclear thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes have been developed to simulate nuclear reactor systems, which solve simplified governing equations by replacing source terms with constitutive relations for simulating entire reactor systems with low computational resources. For half a century, many efforts have been made for wider versatility and higher accuracy of system codes, but various factors can affect the code analysis results, and it was difficult to isolate these factors and interpret them individually. In this study, two system codes, RELAP5 and TRACE, which have many users and are highly reliable, are selected to analyze only the effects of constitutive relations. The influence of constitutive relations is analyzed using in-house platforms that replicate constitute relations of RELAP5 and TRACE equally to exclude factors that may affect analysis results, such as governing equation solvers and user effects. Among the various constitutive relations, the analysis is performed on the wall variables expected to have the most influence on the analysis results. Part 1 paper presents the methodology and wall friction model comparison, while Part 2 paper shows wall heat transfer comparison of the two selected codes.

Nuclear thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes have been developed to comprehensively model nuclear reactor systems to evaluate the safety of a nuclear reactor system. For analyzing complex systems with finite computational resources, system codes usually solve simplified fluid equations for coarsely discretized control volumes with one-dimensional assumptions and replace source terms in the governing equations with constitutive relations. Wall boiling heat transfer models are regarded as essential models in nuclear safety evaluation among many constitutive relations. The wall boiling heat transfer models of two widely used nuclear system codes, RELAP5 and TRACE, are analyzed in this study. It is first described how wall heat transfer models are composed in the two codes. By utilizing the same method described in Part 1 paper, heat fluxes from the two codes are compared under the same thermal-hydraulic conditions. The significant factors for the differences are identified as well as at which conditions the non-negligible difference occurs. Steady-state simulations with both codes are also conducted to confirm how the difference in wall heat transfer models impacts the simulation results.

A printed circuit steam generator (PCSG) is being considered as the component for pressurized water reactor (PWR) type small modular reactor (SMR) that can further reduce the physical size of the system. Since a steam generator in many PWR-type SMR generates superheated steam, it is expected that dryout front oscillation can potentially cause thermal fatigue failure due to cyclic thermal stresses induced by the transition in boiling regimes between convective evaporation and film boiling. To investigate the fatigue issue of a PCSG, a reference PCSG is designed in this study first using an in-house PCSG design tool. For the stress analysis, a finite element method analysis model is developed to obtain the temperature and stress fields of the designed PCSG. Fatigue estimation is performed based on ASME Boiler and pressure vessel code to identify the major parameters influencing the fatigue life time originating from the dryout front oscillation. As a result of this study, the limit on the temperature difference between the hot side and cold side fluids is obtained. Moreover, it is found that the heat transfer coefficient of convective evaporation and film boiling regimes play an essential role in the fatigue life cycle as well as the temperature difference.

Abstract Background Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have favorable characteristics that render them a potent therapeutic tool. We tested the characteristics of MSCs after temporal storage in various carrier solutions, such as 0.9% saline (saline), 5% dextrose solution (DS), heparin in saline, and Hartmann’s solution, all of which are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Phosphate-buffered saline, which does not have FDA approval, was also used as a carrier solution. We aimed to examine the effects of these solutions on the viability and characteristics of MSCs to evaluate their suitability and efficacy for the storage of canine adipose-derived MSCs (cADMSCs). Results We stored the cADMSCs in the test carrier solutions in a time-dependent manner (1, 6, and 12 h) at 4 °C, and analyzed cell confluency, viability, proliferation, self-renewability, and chondrogenic differentiation. Cell confluency was significantly higher in 5% DS and lower in phosphate-buffered saline at 12 h compared to other solutions. cADMSCs stored in saline for 12 h showed the highest viability rate. However, at 12 h, the proliferation rate of cADMSCs was significantly higher after storage in 5% DS and significantly lower after storage in saline, compared to the other solutions. cADMSCs stored in heparin in saline showed superior chondrogenic capacities at 12 h compared to other carrier solutions. The expression levels of the stemness markers, Nanog and Sox2, as well as those of the MSC surface markers, CD90 and CD105, were also affected over time. Conclusion Our results suggest that MSCs should be stored in saline, 5% DS, heparin in saline, or Hartmann’s solution at 4 °C, all of which have FDA approval (preferable storage conditions: less than 6 h and no longer than 12 h), rather than storing them in phosphate-buffered saline to ensure high viability and efficacy.

The lack of plant-side energy storage analysis to support nuclear power plants (NPP), has setup this research endeavor to understand the characteristics and role of specific storage technologies and the integration to an NPP. The paper provides a qualitative review of a wide range of configurations for integrating the energy storage system (ESS) to an operating NPP with pressurized water reactor (PWR). The role of ESS technologies most suitable for large-scale storage are evaluated, including thermal energy storage, compressed gas energy storage, and liquid air energy storage. The methods of integration to the NPP steam cycle are introduced and categorized as electrical, mechanical, and thermal, with a review on developments in the integration of ESS with an operating PWR. By adopting simplified off-design modeling for the steam turbines and heat exchangers, the results show the performance of the PWR steam cycle changes with respect to steam bypass rate for thermal and mechanical storage integration options. Analysis of the integrated system characteristics of proposed concepts for three different ESS suggests that certain storage technologies could support steady operation of an NPP. After having reviewed what have been accomplished through the years, the research team presents a list of possible future works.

A supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) Brayton cycle is a compact and simple power conversion system with competitive efficiency. However, the strong real gas effects of S-CO2 pose challenges to the design of a cycle and its components. In particular, designing turbomachinery for expansion and compression processes has to accurately reflect real gas effects. Windage loss is one of the major losses that affects the motor load and heat generation in turbomachinery. The windage loss has a substantial impact on the overall turbomachinery efficiency especially in an S-CO2 power cycle since the windage loss is reported to be the dominant loss mechanism due to high fluid density and high rotational speed. Therefore, an accurate windage loss model reflecting the real gas effect of S-CO2 is essential to obtaining an optimal design of turbomachinery as well as maximizing the performance of an S-CO2 power cycle. In this study, existing windage loss models are first compared to the recently obtained data from S-CO2 windage loss experiments conducted by the KAIST research team under S-CO2 conditions in order to understand the turbomachinery performance uncertainty caused by the windage loss models. This is followed by proposing a new windage model which explains data better.

Gas Brayton cycles have been considered the next promising power cycles for microreactors. Especially the open-air and closed supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) Brayton cycles have received attention due to their high thermal efficiency and compact component sizes when compared to the steam Rankine cycle. In this research, the performances of the open-air and closed S-CO2 Brayton cycle at microreactor power range are compared with polytropic turbomachinery efficiency. When optimizing the cycle, three different optimization parameters are considered in this paper: maximum efficiency, maximum cycle specific work, and maximum of the product of both indicators. For the air Brayton cycle, the maximum of the product of both indicators allows to consider both efficiency and specific work while optimizing the cycle. However, for the S-CO2 Brayton cycle, the best performing conditions follow either maximum efficiency or the maximum cycle specific work conditions. In general, the S-CO2 power cycle should be designed and optimized to maximize the cycle specific work for commercial-scale application. The results show that the air Brayton cycle can achieve near 45% efficiency when it can couple with a microreactor with a core outlet temperature higher than 700 °C. However, the S-CO2 power cycle can still achieve above 30% efficiency when it is coupled with a microreactor with a core outlet temperature higher than 500 °C, whereas the air Brayton cycle cannot even reach breakeven condition.

The small modular reactors (SMRs) of the integrated pressurized water reactor (IPWR) type have been widely developed owing to their enhanced safety features. The SMR-IPWR adopts passive residual heat removal system (PRHRS) to extract residual heat from the core. Because the PRHRS removes the residual heat using the latent heat of the water stored in the emergency cooldown tank, the PRHRS gradually loses its cooling capacity after the stored water is depleted. A quick restoration of the power supply is expected infeasible under station blackout accident condition, so an advanced PRHRS is needed to ensure an extended grace period. In this study, an advanced design is proposed to indirectly incorporate a dry air cooling tower to the PRHRS through an intermediate loop called indefinite PRHRS. The feasibility of the indefinite PRHRS was assessed through a long-term transient simulation using the MARS-KS code. The indefinite PRHRS is expected to remove the residual heat without depleting the stored water. The effect of the environmental temperature on the indefinite PRHRS was confirmed by parametric analysis using comparative simulations with different environmental temperatures. Background: The functional quality of insulin-secreting islet beta cells is a major factor determining the outcome of clinical transplantations for diabetes. It is therefore of importance to develop methodological strategies aiming at optimizing islet cell function prior to transplantation. In this study we propose a synthetic biology approach to genetically engineer cellular signalling pathways in islet cells. Methods: We established a novel procedure to modify islet beta cell function by combining adenovirus-mediated transduction with reaggregation of islet cells into pseudoislets. As a proof-of-concept for the genetic engineering of islets prior to transplantation, this methodology was applied to increase the expression of the V1b receptor specifically in insulin-secreting beta cells. The functional outcomes were assessed in vitro and in vivo following transplantation into the anterior chamber of the eye. Findings: Pseudoislets produced from mouse dissociated islet cells displayed basic functions similar to intact native islets in terms of glucose induced intracellular signalling and insulin release, and after transplantation were properly vascularized and contributed to blood glucose homeostasis. The synthetic amplification of the V1b receptor signalling in beta cells successfully modulated pseudoislet function in vitro. Finally, in vivo responses of these pseudoislet grafts to vasopressin allowed evaluation of the potential benefits of this approach in regenerative medicine. Interpretation: These results are promising first steps towards the generation of high-quality islets and suggest synthetic biology as an important tool in future clinical islet transplantations. Moreover, the presented methodology might serve as a useful research strategy to dissect cellular signalling mechanisms of relevance for optimal islet function. Drug repositioning, the approach of discovering different uses for existing drugs, has gained enormous popularity in recent years in the anticancer drug discovery field due to the increasing demand for anticancer drugs. Additionally, the repurposing of veterinary antiparasitic drugs for the treatment of cancer is gaining traction, as supported by existing literature. A prominent example is the proposal to implement the use of veterinary antiparasitics such as benzimidazole carbamates and halogenated salicylanilides as novel anticancer drugs. These agents have revealed pronounced anti-tumor activities and gained special attention for “double repositioning”, as they are repurposed for different species and diseases simultaneously, acting via different mechanisms depending on their target. As anticancer agents, these compounds employ several mechanisms, including the inhibition of oncogenic signal transduction pathways of mitochondrial respiration and the inhibition of cellular stress responses. In this review, we summarize and provide valuable information about the experimental, preclinical, and clinical trials of veterinary antiparasitic drugs available for the treatment of various cancers in humans. This review suggests the possibility of new treatment options that could improve the quality of life and outcomes for cancer patients in comparison to the currently used treatments.

A structural model for stress distributions of coated Zircaloy subjected to realistic incore pressure difference, thermal expansion, irradiation-induced axial growth, and creep has been developed in this study. In normal operation, the structural integrity of coating layers is anticipated to be significantly challenged with increasing burnup. Strain mismatch between the zircaloy and the coated layer, due to their different irradiation-induced axial growth, and creep deformation are found to be the most dominant causes of stress. This study suggests that the compatibility of the high temperature irradiation-induced strains (axial growth and creep) between zircaloy and the coating layer and the capability to undergo plastic strain should be taken as key metrics, along with the traditional focus on chemical protectiveness.

Stem cell therapy has prompted the expansion of veterinary medicine both experimentally and clinically, with the potential to contribute to contemporary treatment strategies for various diseases and conditions for which limited or no therapeutic options are presently available. Although the application of various types of stem cells, such as bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs), adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs), and umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSCs), has promising potential to improve the health of different species, it is crucial that the benefits and drawbacks are completely evaluated before use. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a rich source of stem cells; nonetheless, isolation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from UCB presents technical challenges. Although MSCs have been isolated from UCB of diverse species such as human, equine, sheep, goat, and canine, there are inherent limitations of using UCB from these species for the expansion of MSCs. In this review, we investigated canine UCB (cUCB) and compared it with UCB from other species by reviewing recent articles published from February 2003 to June 2017 to gain an understanding of the limitations of cUCB in the acquisition of MSCs and to determine other suitable sources for the isolation of MSCs from canine. Our review indicates that cUCB is not an ideal source of MSCs because of insufficient volume and ethical issues. However, canine reproductive organs discarded during neutering may help broaden our understanding of effective isolation of MSCs. We recommend exploring canine reproductive and adipose tissue rather than UCB to fulfill the current need in veterinary medicine for the well-designed and ethically approved source of MSCs.

Although the harsh space environment imposes many severe challenges to space pioneers, space exploration is a realistic and profitable goal for long-term humanity survival. One of the viable and promising options to overcome the harsh environment of space is nuclear propulsion. Particularly, the Nuclear Thermal Rocket (NTR) is a leading candidate for near-term human missions to Mars and beyond due to its relatively high thrust and efficiency. Traditional NTR designs use typically high power reactors with fast or epithermal neutron spectrums to simplify core design and to maximize thrust. In parallel there are a series of new NTR designs with lower thrust and higher efficiency, designed to enhance mission versatility and safety through the use of redundant engines (when used in a clustered engine arrangement) for future commercialization. This paper proposes a new NTR design of the second design philosophy, Korea Advanced NUclear Thermal Engine Rocket (KANUTER), for future space applications. The KANUTER consists of an Extremely High Temperature Gas cooled Reactor (EHTGR) utilizing hydrogen propellant, a propulsion system, and an optional electricity generation system to provide propulsion as well as electricity generation. The innovatively small engine has the characteristics of high efficiency, being compact and lightweight, and bimodal capability. The notable characteristics result from the moderated EHTGR design, uniquely utilizing the integrated fuel element with an ultra heat-resistant carbide fuel, an efficient metal hydride moderator, protectively cooling channels and an individual pressure tube in an all-in-one package. The EHTGR can be bimodally operated in a propulsion mode of 100 MWth and an electricity generation mode of 100 kWth, equipped with a dynamic energy conversion system. To investigate the design features of the new reactor and to estimate referential engine performance, a preliminary design study in terms of neutronics and thermohydraulics was carried out. The result indicates that the innovative design has great potential for high propellant efficiency and thrust-to-weight of engine ratio, compared with the existing NTR designs. However, the build-up of fission products in fuel has a significant impact on the bimodal operation of the moderated reactor such as xenon-induced dead time. This issue can be overcome by building in excess reactivity and control margin for the reactor design.

The supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) Brayton cycle has recently been gaining a lot of attention for application to next generation nuclear reactors. The advantages of the S-CO2 cycle are high efficiency in the mild turbine inlet temperature region and a small physical footprint with a simple layout, compact turbomachinery, and heat exchangers. Several heat sources including nuclear, fossil fuel, waste heat, and renewable heat sources such as solar thermal or fuel cells are potential application areas of the S-CO2 cycle. In this paper, the current development progress of the S-CO2 cycle is introduced. Moreover, a quick comparison of various S-CO2 layouts is presented in terms of cycle performance.

In this paper, recent advances in Ocean Nuclear Power Plants (ONPPs) are reviewed, including their general arrangement, design parameters, and safety features. The development of ONPP concepts have continued due to initiatives taking place in France, Russia, South Korea, and the United States. Russia’s first floating nuclear power stations utilizing the PWR technology (KLT-40S) and the spar-type offshore floating nuclear power plant designed by a research group in United States are considered herein. The APR1400 and SMART mounted Gravity Based Structure (GBS)-type ONPPs proposed by a research group in South Korea are also considered. In addition, a submerged-type ONPP designed by DCNS of France is taken into account. Last, issues and challenges related to ONPPs are discussed and summarized.

In this paper, we suggest the conceptual design of a water-cooled reactor system for a low-pressure inherent heat sink nuclear desalination plant (LIND) that applies the safety-related design concepts of high temperature gas-cooled reactors to a water-cooled reactor for inherent and passive safety features. Through a scoping analysis, we found that the current LIND design satisfied several essential thermal–hydraulic and neutronic design requirements. In a thermal–hydraulic analysis using an analytical method based on the Wooton–Epstein correlation, we checked the possibility of safely removing decay heat through the steel containment even if all the active safety systems failed. In a neutronic analysis using the Monte Carlo N-particle transport code, we estimated a cycle length of approximately 6 years under 200 MWth and 4.5% enrichment. The very long cycle length and simple safety features minimize the burdens from the operation, maintenance, and spent-fuel management, with a positive impact on the economic feasibility. Finally, because a nuclear reactor should not be directly coupled to a desalination system to prevent the leakage of radioactive material into the desalinated water, three types of intermediate systems were studied: a steam producing system, a hot water system, and an organic Rankine cycle system.

To overcome the degradation of the cycle efficiency of a supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle with dry cooling, this study proposes an improved design of an S-CO2 centrifugal compressor. The conventional air centrifugal compressor can achieve higher efficiency as backsweep angle increases. However, the structural issue restricts the maximum allowable angle (−50~−56°). In this study, an S-CO2 centrifugal compressor performance was examined while changing the backward sweep angle at impeller exit to study if the previous optimum backsweep angle for an air centrifugal compressor is still valid when the fluid has changed. It is shown through an analysis that an S-CO2 centrifugal compressor can achieve the highest efficiency at −70° backsweep angle, which is greater than the typical design value. The S-CO2 centrifugal compressor is less restricted from a structural integrity issue because it has low relative Mach number regardless of the low sound speed near critical point (Tc = 304.11 K, Pc = 7377 kPa). It is also shown in the paper that the variation of compressibility factor does not impact on its total to total efficiency since its Mach number is still lower than unity. Finally, it is also shown that a backward sweep impeller can achieve higher pressure ratio and operate stably in wider range as the mass flow rate is decreased. As further works, the suggested concept will be validated by the structural analysis and the compressor performance test.

There is an increasing concern that the term adipose tissue-derived stem cell (ASC) is inappropriately used to refer to the adipose stromal vascular fraction (SVF). To evaluate the accuracy and quality of reporting, 116 manuscripts on the application of ASC in humans and animals were examined based on the 2013 published International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science (IFATS)/ International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) joint statement and in reference to current guidelines for clinical trials and preclinical studies. It is disconcerting that 4 among the 47 papers or 8.51% (CI 2.37–20.38) surveyed after publication of IFATS/ISCT statement reported using ASCs but in fact they used unexpanded cells. 28/47 or 59.57% (CI 44.27–73.63) explicitly reported that adherent cells were used, 35/47 or 74.47% (CI 59.65–86.06) identified expression of surface markers, and 25/47 or 53.19% (CI 14.72–30.65) verified the multilineage potential of the cells. While there are a number of papers examined in this survey that were not able to provide adequate information on the characteristics of ASCs used with some erroneously referring to the SVF as stem cells, there are more room for improvement in the quality of reporting in the application of ASCs in humans and animals.

The term “immunoisolation” refers to the encapsulation of a graft in a selectively permeable membrane. Encapsulation of cellular grafts may provide a way to protect the graft from immune attack without the need for immunosuppressive agents. Although numerous types of artificial materials have been used for encapsulating membranes, their incomplete biocompatibility causes foreign body reaction against the membranes. A new technique has been developed, called cell sheet engineering using temperature-responsive culture dishes, that allows the use of living cells as an immunoisolating membrane in this study. Using this method, the cultured cells can be easily harvested in the shape of a sheet by a simple change of the temperature without the use of proteolytic enzymes. A cell sheet can be created with three-dimensional structure by making multiple cell sheet layers. In this study, a new technique of macroencapsulation (bioartificial organs) has been developed using chondrocyte sheets. Among the various candidate cells, pancreatic islet cells were selected for a bioartificial organ in this study. A chondrocyte sheeting immunodelusive immunoisolated bioartificial pancreas (CSI-BAP) was manufactured by means of cell sheet engineering. An auricular cartilage, which is a histologically elastic cartilage from dogs (beagle), was used as a source of immunoisolating membrane. CSI-BAP was made by multilayering the chondrocyte sheets, and the donor's islets were located between each sheet. Islets were isolated and prepared from the dog (ALLO-model) and Brown Norway (BN) rat (XENO-model). The CSI-BAP was cultured for 83 days and the cultured medium was collected every 24 h to measure the insulin concentrations. The CSI-BAP was examined histologically using hematoxyhin and eosin (H&E), and azan dye staining. In addition, immunohistochemical staining was performed to demonstrate the insulin production of CSI-BAP. Insulin secretion of CSI-BAP on day 16 was reduced to 21.4% of the insulin secretion level of day 10, which was the start point of measurement. Although a gradual reduction was observed, insulin secretion was maintained for 3 months. The CSI-BAP was capable of secreting insulin to the culture medium during the observation period. Histological evaluations demonstrated the good viability of the islets, and immunohistochemistry showed the positive staining of insulin. This novel technology may be used for other kinds of endocrine cells or hepatocytes, which may become the models for immunoisolated bioartificial organs in the near future.

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays have attracted much attention as displays for small form factor augmented reality (AR) devices. To realize glass-like thin and wide field of view (FoV) AR devices, we designed a display module with a high aspect ratio microdisplay and a thin optical component. For the high aspect ratio microdisplay, we developed the color OLED microdisplay with a 32:9 aspect ratio and a 0.8-inch diagonal ∼2,490-ppi CMOS backplane. To express color and reduce optical crosstalk, we fabricated the color filter (C/F) patterning directly on the white OLED. We also developed a pin mirror lens with 11 pin mirrors to improve the optical efficiency and quality with a thin lens. By combining the microdisplay with LetinAR’s pin mirror lens, we successfully demonstrated an AR device with a wide horizontal FoV of 46° but with a small form factor 4 mm lens.

Electronic skin that spatially maps pressure distribution through imaging shows limited performance despite improvements to data acquisition. Here, the authors report ultraflexible, transparent electroluminescent skin capable of high-resolution imaging of pressure distribution over 3D surfaces.

From the very first time that graphene was used as a transparent electrode for OLED applications, the emergence of active-matrix (AM)-graphene OLED displays has been envisioned. Realizing this expectation, however, turned out to be difficult. Two obstacles are the growth and transfer of a large-area graphene film and the patterning of a graphene film into pixels. To solve these problems, a process of patterning a graphene film without surface contamination was developed. The fabrication of OLED panels by the patterned graphene anode on Gen 2(370 × 470 mm)-sized and flexible substrates was successfully demonstrated. In this work, oxide TFT arrays were combined as a switching backplane, and a pixelated graphene OLED was used as an emissive layer, to realize AM-graphene OLED displays. To explore the technical feasibility of flexible AM-graphene OLED displays, the aforementioned components were formed on a flexible substrate. For commercial-level production, all the processes that were used were chosen to be compatible with the conventional display processes.

Microdisplay is a key technology for realizing augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) devices, which have attracted much attention of late. Even though the operating voltage in the tandem structure is higher than that in the single structure, 2-stack tandem OLED exhibited 20,000 cd/m2 at 9 V, which is compatible with CMOS circuit driving. Due to its top-emitting geometry with a tandem structure, the OLED device with a well-controlled thickness exhibited a white spectrum with (0.26, 0.26) color coordinates. The pixel density of the fabricated microdisplay panel with a white tandem OLED was about 2350 pixels per inch, and the active area of the panel was 0.7 inch diagonally. The resolution of the panel was 1280 × 1024, corresponding to SXGA, and the maximal luminance was 3,000 cd/m2.

The enhancement of the luminance of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels with various areas (2.25–6084 mm2) using a microlens array (MLA) film was investigated. The luminance enhancement was dependent on the viewing angle, and the largest enhancement (64%) was observed in the normal direction while 60 and 18% enhancements were observed at 60 and 30°, which led to lower enhancement (38%) of the total luminous flux compared with the luminance enhancement (64%) in the normal direction. The luminance enhancement with the MLA film also depended on the panel area, and the smaller panels showed lower luminance enhancement than the larger ones. As for the small panels, the straying light beyond the panel areas significantly affected the luminance of the panels, and over 60% luminance enhancement was observed in the normal direction for the large panels (2500 and 6084 mm2) with the MLA film while only 48 and 58% luminance enhancements were observed at the small panels (2.25 and 70 mm2).

Presented is a flexible dual-mode display operable in reflective and emissive mode according to ambient light for optimal visibility on a nonplanar surface. Flexible-backplane-embedding organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), thin-film transistors (TFTs), and control electrodes for liquid crystal (LC) shutter are realized by the laser lift-off (LLO) method and the newly developed polyimide (PI) delamination technique. A novel color-filterless LC shutter with color dyes is merged with this flexible backplane for operation in reflective mode. This work opens up a promising approach to building displays that are adaptive to the surrounding environment for better usability.

We investigated the optical reflectance, surface roughness, and sheet resistance of aluminum (Al)/titanium nitride (TiN), titanium (Ti), and tungsten (W) layers on Si substrates, which are available in the CMOS foundry, for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays. The devices with different metal anode layers exhibited different hole-injection properties and OLED performances, owing to the different optical and electrical properties of metal anode layers. Based on the OLED characteristics, the Al/TiN layer was selected as an anode layer for OLED microdisplays. A green monochromatic OLED microdisplay panel was designed and implemented using the 0.11-μm CMOS process. The density of pixels was ~2 351 pixels per inch and the panel's active area was 0.7 in in diagonal. The resolution of the panel was 1 280 × 3 × 1 024, corresponding to SXGA. The panel was successfully operated, and the maximal luminance was ~460 cd/m2.

A nuclear power plant is one of the power sources that shares a large portion of base-load. However, as the proportion of renewable energy increases, nuclear power plants will be required to generate power more flexibly due to the intermittency of the renewable energy sources. This paper reviews a layout thermally integrating the liquid air energy storage system with a nuclear power plant. To evaluate the performance realistically while optimizing the layout, operating nuclear power plant conditions are used. After revisiting the analysis, the optimized performance of the proposed system is predicted to achieve 59.96% of the round-trip efficiency. However, it is further shown that external environmental conditions could deteriorate the performance. For the design of liquid air energy storage-nuclear power plant integrated systems, both the steam properties of the linked plants and external factors should be considered.

Gintonin, a novel ginseng-derived glycolipoprotein complex, has an exogenous ligand for lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) receptors. However, recent lipid analysis of gintonin has shown that gintonin also contains other bioactive lipids besides LPAs, including linoleic acid and lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI). Linoleic acid, a free fatty acid, and LPI are known as ligands for the G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR), GPR40, and GPR55, respectively. We, herein, investigated whether gintonin could serve as a ligand for GPR40 and GPR55, using the insulin-secreting beta cell-derived cell line INS-1 and the human prostate cancer cell line PC-3, respectively. Gintonin dose-dependently enhanced insulin secretion from INS-1 cells. Gintonin-stimulated insulin secretion was partially inhibited by a GPR40 receptor antagonist but not an LPA1/3 receptor antagonist and was down-regulated by small interfering RNA (siRNA) against GPR40. Gintonin dose-dependently induced [Ca2+]i transients and Ca2+-dependent cell migration in PC-3 cells. Gintonin actions in PC-3 cells were attenuated by pretreatment with a GPR55 antagonist and an LPA1/3 receptor antagonist or by down-regulating GPR55 with siRNA. Taken together, these results demonstrated that gintonin-mediated insulin secretion by INS-1 cells and PC-3 cell migration were regulated by the respective activation of GPR40 and GPR55 receptors. These findings indicated that gintonin could function as a ligand for both receptors. Finally, we demonstrated that gintonin contained two more GPCR ligands, in addition to that for LPA receptors. Gintonin, with its multiple GPCR ligands, might provide the molecular basis for the multiple pharmacological actions of ginseng.

In transparent organic light-emitting diodes (TOLEDs), the asymmetry in the optical paths causes difference between the bottom and top emitting lights, both in emissions and spectral distributions. Capping layers (CLs) can be used as an optical functional to enhance the emissions and adjust the spectral distributions. Here, we report on the optical effects of an organic CL, 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane (TAPC), on the characteristics of TOLEDs Both simulated and experimental results are presented. We demonstrate the possibility of improving the total emission and achieving spectral matching of bottom and top emissions by varying the CL thickness. The optical effects of CLs have been interpreted from interference perspectives. Finally, we have presented a guideline that is practically useful in designing high-performance TOLEDs with CLs.

Intraperitoneal (IP) anesthesia is commonly used for laboratory animal experiments including rat islet isolation. However, the direct effects of anesthetics on pancreatic islets have been neglected. This study compared the islet function and recovery yield from rats that were anesthetized using IP and intramuscular (IM) injection. In addition, the lag time required to lose deep pain was measured in the following anesthetics combinations. Lewis rats were anesthetized using ketamine and xylazine (K/X) or zoletil and xylazine (Z/X). A glucose challenge test was performed on each group of prepared islets. The effect of the anesthetic agents (e.g., ketamine, zoletil, xylazine alone, and the combination of K/X and Z/X) on cell lines (rat insulinoma; RIN-5F) was investigated by determining their effect on the cell viability, the amount of insulin, and insulin mRNA expression levels of RIN-5F. The time needed for deep anesthesia in IM anesthesia was significantly shortened in comparison to IP [K/X (IM: 313 ± 66 s, IP: 371 ± 84 s) and Z/X (IM: 206 ± 76 s, IP: 245 ± 92 s)]. In addition, number of isolated islet yield by IM anesthesia was significantly improved [K/X (IM: 1530 ± 242, IP: 1245 ± 149) and Z/X (IM: 1136 ± 226, IP: 511 ± 154)]. The functions of fresh islets, indicated by the stimulation index, acquired under IM anesthesia was better preserved than that of IP. The viability and the insulin secretion of RIN-5F were decreased at 24 and 48 h. Insulin gene expression levels were decreased at 24 h as well. Anesthetics may be absorbed through the pancreas surface to the islets and have a direct effect, resulting in islet exposure and deterioration during isolation. In conclusion, for rodent islet isolation, IM anesthesia is simpler and safer in comparison to IP anesthesia.
