Socrates’ final argument in the Protagoras is premised on the surprising identification of the pleasant with the good and argues that virtue is the “art of measurement” that can be easily taught to the Many. The view that virtue can be taught is also espoused by Socrates elsewhere, notably in the Phaedrus. However, while the Protagoras identifies virtue with the art of calculating the greatest pleasure, which is identified with the greatest good, in the Phaedrus virtue is shown to consist in the ceaseless search for the good. I argue that the picture of virtue presented in the Protagoras is in agreement with that of the Phaedrus in that the Protagoras depicts the first stage of the process of learning genuine virtue, which is outlined as a whole in the Phaedrus. The argument of the Protagoras then works as a protreptic: it teaches an elementary way of thinking about the ends of one’s actions and opens up the way toward genuine virtue.

The article investigates the intrinsic interconnectedness of European culture with philosophy acting as its self-reflexive pillar, the foundations of which many derive from Plato. It is in the philosophical interpretation of Plato’s work that the author uncovers the analogous structures that represented one of the greatest challenges of the philosophical tradition: the implicit polemical relationship to another, different starting point, that precedes the explicit polemos – a war. The author recalls the influential attempts of European thought in the 20th century that tried to break free from a state of total confrontation. In the 1990s, however, he catches up with the Platonic interpretation, as is demonstrated by the detailed description of the “war of methodologies.” If in the background there is a connection with self-reflection in the process of the self-constitution of philosophy and the selfcomprehension of Europe, then according to the author the “Platonic revolution” is an effort to come to terms with the unprocessed implicit epistemological preformative, war. A possible solution is provided by the author‘s distinction between agon and polemos.

In the concluding part of Heretical Essays in the Philosophy of History, Jan Patočka thematizes the 20th century and claims that this entire period is a century of war. This paper identifies the main arguments supporting this thesis and examines Patočka’s reflections on how this essential character of the 20th century can be overcome. The article primarily focuses on revealing the ontological-anthropological framework that underlies Patočka’s argumentation, including the idea that polemos is the law of the world. More concrete analyses then demonstrate the problematic elements of Patočka’s concept.

Martin Koci es quizás uno de los exponentes más recientes de lo que ha sido denominado el “giro teológico” de la fenomenología contemporánea. Koci presenta una lectura desde una teología que recurre a la fenomenología para intentar dar razón de un Cristianismo posterior a la cristiandad. Aunque la referencia a Kierkegaard sea ineludible, Koci alude, sobre todo, a las implicaciones que supone la vivencia del Cristianismo en una época posmoderna. O, dicho más específicamente: una época post-cristiana. Para llevar a cabo su tarea, el teólogo checo establece un diálogo con uno de sus compatriotas más relevantes del siglo pasado: Jan Patočka. En su texto más reciente, Christianity after Christendom: Heretical Perspectives in Philosophical Theology, Koci amplía su diálogo con Patočka haciendo partícipes en la conversación a una serie de filósofos, conocidos todos por sus posturas heterodoxas o “heréticas” en lo que se refiere al Cristianismo. Entre estos se encuentran Jean-Luc Nancy, Gianni Vattimo, John D. Caputo y Richard Kearney. Junto con cada uno de estos autores, Koci asume el reto de hacer “la pregunta obvia, pero que en gran medida ha sido descuidada: ¿qué viene después del fin del Cristianismo?”.

Platonismo negativo es quizás uno de los textos de Jan Patočka que más atención ha recibido en el ámbito académico. Su importancia es pocas veces puesta en duda. Con todo, hoy nos encontramos lejos de agotar las implicaciones que conlleva la interpretación que hace de Platón el filósofo checo. Particularmente, la concepción de la Idea platónica que se deriva de la lectura patočkiana, no parece haber sido suficientemente confrontada con lo dicho por el mismo Platón en sus diálogos. Según el autor, parece existir una afinidad particular entre lo dicho por Diotima en su discurso en el Banquete y la interpretación patočkiana de Platón que, hasta el momento, no parece haber recibido suficiente atención en la literatura académica sobre estos dos autores. De manera similar a lo que plantea Patočka con la experiencia de la libertad como puerta que abre a la consideración de la Idea, Diotima ancla el reconocimiento de lo bello en sí con la experiencia de lo bello en el mundo. Este “anclaje” se daría gracias al camino en ascenso planteado en la scala amoris, en el que eros, siendo amor de lo bello, asume una función integradora en el interior del amante. Justamente, esta función integradora llevada a cabo por eros parece dar razón del vínculo que establece Diotima entre aquello que es bello en sí mismo y la virtud verdadera que el amante engendra al experimentarlo.

Opening up to the world and individual reflective experience are fundamental pillars in the phenomenological approaches of Landgrebe, Fink, and Patočka. In the special case of Landgrebe and his constructive phenomenology, he seeks to address the problems of metaphysics through the clarification of meanings through the phenomenological interpretation of questions of idealism. For Landgrebe, strict knowledge coincides with the absolute, which arises from the possibilities of meaning or sense. The recovery of metaphysics, innate in the human being, requires evaluating the metaphysical origin of the birth of man. In this way, Landgrebe proposes to initiate the phenomenological path by seeking the path to the absolute in the depths of subjectivity. This path leads us to face the intersubjectivity of the world as objective and the primacy of the "you" over the "I". Landgrebe's original metaphysical phenomenology seeks to overcome the dualism between consciousness and being, and between knowledge and belief. The analysis of the intentional structure of the horizon reveals an absolutist concept that goes beyond man and his knowledge, representing both the basis and the link between them. Movement becomes the unique and original connection between subject and world.

Should we approach the lived experience and/or understand the other with the sense of things? If this is the case, how are we to treat the human experience par excellence? Paradoxically, Edith Stein gives a fresh meaning to the Husserlian term “leibliche Selbstgegebenheit.” In contrast to Max Scheler’s account, she develops the “persönliche Note” criterion of authenticity. And against Maetin Heidegger’s existential philosophy, a concern for human existence itself resonates. Based on these three dimensions, this article discusses the idea of “the lived experience” according to Edith Stein, that is, the human experience contemplated by the humanities.

In this study, the author investigates, analyzes and evaluates the philosophically and politically important, interactive role played by criticism in forming and maintaining the concept of a democratic republic, and which played a fundamental role in the philosophical and political works of T. G. Masaryk, Emanuel Rádl, Jan Patočka, Ladislav Hejdánek and Erazim Kohák. The study first describes Masaryk’s concept of a democratic republic, which originated in his philosophical, social and political criticism of the time, and then continues with Rádl’s criticism of nationalism, also linked to Masaryk; Patočka’s criticism of Masaryk’s and Rádl’s philosophy and politics; and Hejdánek’s and Kohák’s criticism of Patočka’s criticism. Philosophical criticism played an irreplaceable role both in the initial sustaining of Masaryk’s and Rádl’s concept of a democratic republic and in its renewal and modernization. In the conclusion, the critical discourse of the authors discussed in the study is summarized.

The article addresses the theme of spectrality, the givenness of the other who remains here after departure as a ghost. It explores how this spectrality functions in Plato’s funeral oratory in the Menexenus dialogue. In the first part, the article discusses J. Patočka’s account of the specific givenness of the departed, which is experienced as a privation of a former intersubjectively intertwined life. The deceased other causes a twofold crisis. On the one hand, with the death of the other also comes the withering of part of myself, for I am unable to realise possibilities dependent on his or her presence. On the other hand, the meaning of the other’s project, which becomes institutionalised through participation in the events and re-formation of the world, is endangered if no one is willing to take on and realise this meaning as one’s own. The second part of the article discusses how Socrates’ oratory addresses this crisis through specific temporality of the speech, one in which the past provides the present with a paradigm for appropriate civic action which is to be imitated in the future. In this context, he creatively uses the concept of shame to induce an attitude of responsibility for the polis, whose greatness is grounded in the virtuous deeds of spectrally present ancestry.

The study presented here focuses on the transformation in the 1940s and 1950s of Jan Patočka’s interpretation of the relationship between Socrates and Plato. This shift is tracked in the context of Patočka’s dialogue with the philosophy of existence. While in the lectures from the 1940s and the climactic work from this period, Věčnost a dějinnost (Eternity and Historicity), Socrates – with his emphasis on subjectivity, human freedom and incompleteness – is seen in Patočka’s conception to be close to the main motifs of the philosophy of existence, in Negativní platonismus (Negative Platonism) Patočka’s position is already far from such an “existential Socraticism.” The text of the study shows that Patočka’s critical reception of the philosophy of existence is one of the historically important motives in the transformation of Patočka’s position between Eternity and Historicity and Negative Platonism.

This article discusses the relationship between Jan Patočka's and Václav Havel's political writings. By specifically focusing on Patočka's concepts a "life in the idea" and a "life in problematicity" and Havel's notion of a "life in truth", it seeks to draw out the differences and similarities between their respective understandings of the relationship between truth and politics. The paper argues that Havel reinterpreted Patočka's ideas in a way, which in the final analysis diverged from Patočka's original intentions. Finally, the article argues that Havel's, in many ways productive, reinterpretation gives rise to a highly problematic conception of ideology and politics since the "prepolitical" form of politics that Havel envisions ultimately tends to naturalize both truth and politics.

According to Václav Havel’s famous essay The Power of powerless life within a lie is at the core of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. Life within a lie is characteristic for the great majority of people and is contrasted with life within the truth which is characteristic of dissent movement. In this paper, I will try to shed some light on the concept of “living within a lie.” I will show that Havel develops not one but two concepts of a lie: on the one hand, lie is deliberate pretence; on the other hand, lie is seduction by consumerist values. The first meaning of a lie is derived from Havel’s analysis of the specifics of the Soviet sphere of influence, namely central role of ideology with omnipresent demands on public support of the regime. The second meaning of a lie is heavily influenced by a critical assessment of modern society from the leading figure of the Czech underground movement Ivan Jirous and leading Czech philosopher Jan Patočka. This double meaning of a lie enables Havel to capture both specific problems of living under the communist regime and general problems of living in modern society anywhere in the world. In the final chapters of this paper, I will show that Havel is not clear about how these two meanings of a lie are connected and that there are problems resulting from these unclarities both for Havel’s analysis of the communism and his proposed solution of the crisis.

In in the second half of the 1940s, Jan Patočka emphasized the essentially negative character of human existence. He thus found himself in the neighborhood of Sartre’s existentialism, Heidegger’s philosophy of being, and Hegel’s dialectic, and at the same time in opposition to schools of thought which either completely reject the substantive use of “the nothing,” such as Carnap’s positivism, or relativize it, like Bergson. It is the latter polemic, Patočka’s with Bergson, which is discussed in this article. The concept of negativity in Patočka basically refers to the idea that human existence is defined by a capacity to adopt a distance toward what is pre-given, be it the reality of the physical world or the established habits and rules of a particular society. Negativity qua distance has in Patočka an absolute character. It is this claim that he defends in his critique of Bergson. The article attempts to reconstruct Patočka’s position. I claim that the wager on absolute negativity does not make Patočka a nihilist, but a philosopher of a negative holism, and, in a sense, even a moralist. Above a reconstruction of Patočka’s stance, I spell out some reservations focused especially on the systematic meaning of Patočka’s recourse to negativity. I suggest that negation is an indispensable part of a more complex existential structure Patočka is aiming at. The terms he uses for this structure include “thirst for the absolute,” “thirst for reality,” “restlessness of the heart” and “desire.” To translate these allusions onto a general plan, it is useful to talk about the capacity to establish differences that matter. As general as it seems, this turn of phrase can grasp both Patočka’s emphasis on negativity, and his emphasis on the absolute, the latter – nevertheless – not residing in a distance from being, but in differences established, maintained and abandoned by ourselves within being.

The article looks at the foundations of Jan Patočka’s philosophy of negative Platonism. On the one hand, it pursues the negative-Platonic question of the essence of metaphysics and, on the other, Patočka’s analysis of the ontic-ontological difference as the fundament of the whole negative-Platonic project. The author points out that the expression of Patočka’s borderline position between metaphysics and philosophy is the ambiguousness of negative Platonism, with which, however, the negative-Platonic requirement of a clear ontic-ontological difference does not correspond. He seeks a possible solution to this problem in Patočka’s study “Nadcivilizace a její vnitřní konflikt” (“Supercivilisation and its Inner Conflict“), especially in the notion of “large distinctions”. He understands this as a historical archetype of the difference from later texts devoted to negative Platonism, interpreted as chorismos.

Přestože Patočka nevyvinul systematickou teorii estetiky, napsal četné texty, které společně tvoří jeho "filozofii literatury". Vytváří vysoce osobní korpus spisovatelů, který odráží jeho vlastní filozofické pozice. Bytostně osobní a politicky angažovanou interpretaci věnuje dílům Ivana Vyskočila, kde se zaměřuje na popis mechanismů moci a jejího potencionálního zneužití. Politická a občanská dimenze Patočkovy literární kritiky, ve které se nevyhýbá dobovým polemikám, vyvrací obecně sdílené tvrzení, podle kterého Patočka vstupuje do politické debaty až v pozdějším věku. Konsistentní přítomnost figury Sokrata jako symbolu role filozofa ve společnosti v Patočkových textech dále popírá ideu apolitičnosti Patočkovy tvorby, která předcházela jeho zapojení do aktivit související s Chartou 77. Motiv "prodeje duše", který Patočka reflektuje ve svých studiích ze sedmdesátých let věnovaných Faustovskému tématu, můžeme chápat jako odvrácenou stranu důležitého Patočkovského motivu "péče o duši". Meditace na faustovské téma zajímavě doplňuje Patočkovy soudobé filozofické texty věnované z velké části tématice duše u Platóna. Studie o literatuře a umění, ve kterých můžeme sledovat Patočkovy filozofické koncepty v akci, kde ožívají v konkrétních literárních interpretacích, mohou být osvěžující vstupní branou do komplexního, nicméně koherentního a velice bohatého Patočkova intelektuálního světa, který stále nabízí mnohá tajemství a zachovává si svou aktuálnost i v dnešním kontextu.

Český filozof Jan Patočka (1907–1977) se velmi dobře znal s představiteli Pražského lingvistického kroužku (např. Vilémem Mathesiem, Romanem Jakobsonem a Janem Mukařovským), avšak k užší badatelské spolupráci mezi nimi nikdy nedošlo. Záměrem studie je 1) představit Patočkovy názory na strukturalismus, 2) nastínit jeho vztah k českému strukturalismu, zvláště pak k Janu Mukařovskému. Jestliže Mukařovského můžeme považovat za jednoho z hlavních představitelů českého strukturalismu a analyticko-strukturálního uvažování o umění, Patočka byl myslitelem, který usiloval o syntetizující filozofický přístup.

Studie ukazuje přínos filozofa Jana Patočky pro literární vědu a estetiku. V první části jsou popsány souvislosti Patočkových estetických úvah s jeho koncepcí třech pohybů lidské existence, konkrétně se třetím pohybem průlomu či pravdy. V Patočkově pojetí je umění odhalovatelem životního smyslu a má schopnost připomenout fenomenální podobu našeho životního světa. Chápáním umění jako místa, kde se děje pravda (ve smyslu Heideggerova pojetí pravdy jako ἀλήθεια), Patočka zároveň předjímá hermeneutickou koncepci produktivní reference či mimetického působení P. Ricoeura. V druhé části je sledován přínos Patočkova myšlení pro české literární vědce Milana Jankoviče a Zdeňka Kožmína. Jankovič se inspiroval Patočkými estetickými úvahami a koncepcí svobody v Negativním platonismu při promýšlení otázek smyslu literárního díla, podobně jako Patočka zdůrazňuje časovost smyslu, respective jeho ontologickou otevřenost a vztah ke svobodě. Kožmín zohledňuje širší kontext Patočkova filozofického myšlení a nahlíží na estetickou zkušenost jako na existenciální událost, během níž se dostává do popředí smysl jako takový a s ním i spojené modality lidského zakoušení prostoru a času.

Winckelmannova snaha vysvětlit změny stylu v umění proměnila odbornou znalost v samostatnou vědeckou disciplínu. Jeho následovníci se na tomto nově otevřeném poli dějin umění pokoušeli překročit pouhý popis změn k vysvětlení pomocí hlubších, často filozofických příčin. Ve svých textech z šedesátých let se o svůj vlastní fenomenologicky založený výklad dějin umění pokusil i Jan Patočka. I on se odvolává, přestože kriticky, na Winckelmanna a některé další významné teoretiky dějiny umění, jmenovitě na Riegla, Wölfflina, a Sempera. Filozoficky se pak Patočkův pokus rýsuje na pozadí Hegelovy Estetiky a Heideggerovy fenomenologické koncepce uměleckého díla. Patočkův vlastní pokus z šedesátých let nicméně trpí řadou nedostatků. Patočkovo rozdělení dějin umění na období umělecké a estetické nevykazuje na první pohled žádnou souvislost s druhým dělením, které Patočka zavádí, s dělením na období stylu a imitace. Patočka rovněž nechává nedostatečně zodpovězenou otázku, zda přechody mezi jednotlivými érami pramení pouze z rozdílného kulturně společenského kontextu, či jsou podle způsobeny hlubšími příčinami ontologického rázu. Ontologický charakter uměleckého díla pak nechává pouze naznačen. Cílem tohoto článku je ukázat, jak Patočkova kritická recepce některých momentů Ingardenovy estetiky pomohla vyjasnit a zodpovědět některé problémy jeho vlastní koncepce.

Článek se zabývá fenomenologickou koncepcí literatury v Patočkově studii "Spisovatel a jeho věc" a rozvíjí myšlenku, že literatura nabízí výrazný filozofický přínos. Patočka přisuzuje spisovateli spoluúčast na aktivitě zjevování světa a ukazuje, že literatura může poskytnout vhled za technicko-vědecký rámec, který dominuje současnému životu. Zabývám se vědou i literaturou jako způsoby vztahování se ke světu, reflektuji osobitost každé z nich a způsob, jakým používají psané slovo. V závěru nacházím filozofický přínos literárního psaní v Patočkově dvojím tvrzení o literatuře: že nabízí "individuální zachycení smyslu života" a že představuje "svět" jako "nedělitelný" celek.

Patočkův esej, doprovázející jeho německý překlad Durychova románu Boží duha (česky, 1969) z roku 1975, rozděluje české kritiky. Zatímco někteří zcela odmítají jeho spojení románu s poválečným vyhnáním německého obyvatelstva z Československa, jiní kritizují to, že v eseji je román redukován do jednoho historického kontextu a ztrácí se v něm Durychovo obecnější volání po smíření. Jiní zase protestují proti začlenění konzervativního katolíka Durycha do sekulární liberální agendy. V tomto příspěvku přistupuji k Patočkovu překladatelskému projektu a jeho recepci metodou překladatelské historie a posuzuji kritické postoje ve světle přesnějšího a podrobnějšího pojetí Patočkových motivací při vydávání tohoto překladu. Sleduji jak Patočku, tak i jeho spolupracovníka v projektu, německého historika Franka Boldta, a srovnávám Patočkovu předmluvu s jeho eseji o Komenském a českých dějinách psanými ve stejném období. Argumentuji, že skutečným problémem není tolik Patočkova interpretace Durychova románu, jako jejich dlouhodobá neoddělitelnost v překladech a českých edicích románu, která ruší křehkou rovnováhu v románu mezi historičností, univerzalitou, didaktismem a estetismem.

Jan Patočka je často považován za filozofa, který se nezajímal o politiku a který vstoupil na veřejnou scénu až na konci života, když se rozhodl podpořit undergroundové hudebníky během jejich stíhání a soudu v roce 1976. Tento přístup k Patočkovi je vidět například v nekrologu, který o něm zveřejnila Charta 77 krátce po jeho smrti v roce 1977. Takové pojetí jeho života a díla však ignoruje celou jednu stránku jeho aktivit na poli kulturní kritiky, například jeho četné eseje a recenze, které vycházejí z české literatury a kultury, aby traktovaly sociální a politické otázky. Jedním z těchto textů je i Patočkova recenze hry Milana Uhde "Děvka z města Théby" z roku 1967. Uhde chtěl modernizovat klasický příběh Antigony; Patočka ho podrobuje zdrcující kritice a ukazuje, že Uhde nerozumí záhadám této klasické hry. Když čteme pozorně Patočkův rozbor Uhdeho hry i původní hry Antigona, rozpoznáme jak jinou "genealogii" jeho podpory pro hudební underground v roce 1977, tak jiný výklad vztahu mezi myšlením a jednáním obecněji v jeho díle. Patočkovy eseje o umění a kultuře představují soustavný komentář k okolnímu sociálnímu a kulturnímu světu a ukazují, že se jeho život se značně liší od od ustáleného obrazu abstraktního filozofa, který vstoupil do světa politiky až na konci života.

At the time of his sudden death in 1977, the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka left a large philosophical legacy with no will and testament. For the last 43 years, the editors of his Collected Works have been reconstructing a unified and thematically articulated oeuvre from the more than 10,000 pages found in his drawers and boxes. It should in the end include not only the texts published during Patočka’s lifetime but also his many unpublished manuscripts, fragments, variations, drafts of unfinished philosophical projects, notebooks and letters. After demonstrating in which sense the death of the author coincides in Patočka’s case with the birth of his oeuvre, the article aims to show that the unity of Patočka’s work is not something given, but rather something to be artificially reconstructed, in an always disputable fashion, since the internal coherence of its various thematic divisions is necessarily itself a matter of ongoing interpretation.

Neste artigo apresentamos as análises fenomenológicas sobre a dor que Jan Patočka desenvolveu nos anos 40. Nelas, o filósofo aponta para uma posição interessante sobre a dor como uma experiência do mal. Em particular, a dor é uma intenção negativa, onde existe um objeto peculiar que aniquila todos os objetos possíveis aos quais os desejos humanos aspiram. Esta tese do filósofo checo, além de esclarecer todo o seu trabalho, enquadra-‑se plenamente nos atuais debates filosóficos e interdisciplinares sobre a dor.

Jan Patočka, who drew inspiration for his own philosophy not only in the important phenomenologist Hannah Arendt but also in Greek philosophy, at one point in his philosophical development, surprisingly turned away from Socrates and Plato and inclined to Aristotle and his concept of action. As with Arendt, this concept forms the pillar of his thinking, and the aim of this text is to indicate the possible connection of this leaning towards Aristotle with the study of Patočka’s friend and colleague Eugen Finek called PHRONESIS und THEORIA. It is these Aristotelian concepts that prove to be crucial for the further development of Patočka’s thought and his concept of action. In addition, there are similarities, but also differences in Patočka and Fink’s concept of human finitude, which is very closely related to the act.

The intensive and systematic scholarly interest in the relation of Patočka’s phenomenology to religion and Christianity is recent and has only intensified over the last ten years. Thus far, the topic has mainly been studied from philosophical and theological perspectives, and the extensive body of Patočka’s cultural writings has largely failed to attract the attention of scholars. Moreover, a culturological approach is virtually absent. Therefore, this article suggests focusing on the analysis of cultural archetypes in Patočka’s cultural writings related to the topic of religion and Christianity from this perspective. The cultural archetypes of the Faustian figures of Patočka’s cultural writings, whether Goethe’s Faust, Goethe’s Marguerite, or Mann’s Adrian Leverkühn, are all Socratic-Christic avatars that personify Patočka’s philosophical concept of “care for the soul” in the modern age. The legacy of Plato’s Greek philosophy and that of Western Christianity as presented by Patočka insist on the universally shared existential experience of finitude that should be grasped as a positive challenge in the strife for meaning. Patočka’s “titanism” and the archetypal titanic figures of his cultural writings are Patočkian manifestations of this universal effort. A culturological approach to Patočka’s thinking on religion and Christianity might thus prove most relevant.

Based on the analysis of texts by Jan Patočka, the author explores two concepts of human existence. The concept of three movements of life and the concept of two basic forms of life are examined in this paper, with the aim to referring to similarities and differences between them and to try to point out the essentials from these conceptions. The motivating question that gives rise to author´s efforts in this paper is: “What kind of agreement can be found between different concepts?”

This essay analyses Patočka’s philosophy of art in the period before and during the Second World War. Since the philosophy of art in Patočka’s thinking is part of a broader philosophical debate, the first section of this essay introduces the main philosophical problems that Patočka was dealing with at this time. The second part of the essay introduces the place that art has in this broader philosophical context, from the point of view both of the artist and of the viewer. In any case, art for Patočka represents a historical force of spirit, that is, a reflection of a certain form of the lived world. The last two parts of this essay describe specific differences between art and other kinds of spiritual activity like philosophy, science, and religion, as well as the pre-reflexive form of these spiritual forces as represented in mythology. The author concludes that Patočka’s early philosophical thinking creates quite a coherent system in which art plays an important role.

The presentation entitled “Jan Patočka’s Concept of Fraternity and its Challenges vis-à-vis the World of Today” discusses the concept of fraternity explored in texts by the Czech philosopher written later in his life. J. Patočka was one of the authors of Charter 77, a dissident document, which called for the protection of human rights (published on January 6.–7., 1977). First, Patočka’s theory of three movements of life (also: movements of the soul) – i.e. the movement of rooting or anchoring, the movement of labour or self-delivery and the movement of breakthrough or finding oneself – will be analysed. Based on the analysis, the role of turning (gr. metanoiésis) from a mere solidarity of interests to actual being through surrendering oneself will be shown. Jan Patočka interpreted life as surrender by referring to the notion of Godman and the way the world relates to him. The phenomenon of sacrifice that Jan Patočka dealt with in the last period of his life (Patočka died on March 13, 1977, following long and exhausting police interrogations) can inspire the field of social ethics, both from the philosophical and theological points of view. It also comes with challenges to education and training in today’s Europe, which faces migration, as it needs to learn new habits of hospitality and fraternity.

This article is concerned with the question of how two obvious but apparently antithetical features of aesthetic experience – distance and immersion – can be integrated into one theory. The author criticizes the contemporary neglect of the first feature (distance or disinterestedness), and argues for a more dialectical notion of aesthetic experience which would include both of them. To this end, the article starts, in section one, by re-examining the main points in the evolution of phenomenological aesthetics, which some authors consider a chief source of this neglect. The presence of two questions is emphasized: (1) the idea of a distinctive perception which we traditionally call aesthetic and can trace back to Kantian roots and (2) the process of breaking with the subject-object model of experience. In the end of this section, the question is raised whether the successful elimination of the latter means the necessary rejection of the former. In section two, the author argues for a negative answer to this question, and a candidate for a ‘new paradigm’ of aesthetics is considered – the idea of the environment. As the conclusion to this section, the compatibility of the idea of the aesthetic mode of perception in the traditional sense, together with the original sense of the idea of environment, is defended. Lastly, in section three, these findings are made more specific and confirmed by turning to Jan Patočka’s analyses of the experience of space.

In a couple of different works, Jan Patočka discusses the possibility of building a new paradise on earth, relating it to myths of a primeval paradise as well as some works by Dostoevsky. In some of Patočka’s writings, this possibility of a paradise on earth also appears, described as ‘new love’ or ‘universal love’. Unlike the myths of a time before the Fall, the possibility of an earthly paradise would be true to the human condition of finitude, understanding, and freedom. However, what is – or is there – the possibility of heaven on earth? What are the differences between the original paradise and the promise of this one? What is ‘love’, or are there different loves?

If the objective meaning of philosophy and science is different from the subjective meaning of life as it is expressed by art, the self-creation of the soul can express, through art, a universal objective; philosophy, art, and psychoanalysis create living meanings. Can we think of creation outside the subject? The psyche, which is neither substance nor subject, is self-created, and it is described in Patočka’s theory of the three movements of human existence. My intention in this article is to describe the self-creation of the psyche within the deeproot-movement, the reproduction-movement, and the truth-movement, and examine it from the phenomenological, psychoanalytical, and sociopolitical points of view. The essence of Psyche is creation; its purpose is autonomy. I seek to demonstrate here that creation can be a subject-free process, an asubjective movement.

The article deals with two Jan Patočka essays, each written to mark the 25th anniversary of the publication of Thomas Mann’s novel Doctor Faustus (1947). In these essays, the writer is defined as an ‘interpreter of myth’. In contrast to his essays ‘The Concern of the Writer’ (1969) and ‘Art and Time’ (1966), Patočka here examines the relationship between modern art and myth in two essays on Faustus. The article presents Patočka’s interpretation of the fundamental subject of Faustus literature in its metamorphosis from the sixteenth century to the twentieth, and points out that Patočka’s Faustus essays manifest an important aspect of his concept of modern art.

The article deals with Jan Patočka’s considerations on the mutual relation of science and art as two important ways towards the comprehension of reality. Patočka believes that science provides the tool to reveal objective and binding truth and that modern and contemporary art is able to reveal subjective and individual truth. Art thus functions as a corrective to the dominance of science and technology. However, art as such emerges only in a time of dominant scientific and technical approaches to reality. Along these lines, the article emphasises that the mutual relations of art and science should be conceived as dialectical.

In his essays on general history, Patočka locates the thaumatical shake-up together with the beginning of philosophy, politics, and history in classical Greece, when man first stepped back from being and became able to reflect freely upon everything that exists (his Lebenswelt). The author seeks to demonstrate that a similar thaumatical shake-up also occurred in art history with the coming of the aesthetic era. Here, art no longer serves to affirm a religious or ideological order, as it had in the preceding artistic era; instead, art turns towards the individual, who, by means of the work of art, reflects upon the world he or she lives in. The author concludes that the art of the artistic era has similarities with the pre-historical age in which thauma was not yet present, and the art of the aesthetic era shares features with the historical age in which, by contrast, thauma is the central factor. Liberating wonder brought the pre-historical age to an end in ancient Greece with the discovery of philosophy, politics, and history, giving birth to the historical age in Europe. By contrast, the artistic era did not cease to be dominant till modern times; it was then that thauma became the crucial aspect for the reception of art and gave birth to the aesthetic era. Here, the philosophy of art or aesthetics, the history of art, and the politics of art were revealed.

In this essay, I argue that there are striking parallels between the later work of the American pragmatist William James and the philosophy of Jan Patočka. Taking the naturalistic approach of existential moods in James as my point of departure, I show how both James and Patočka consider the dynamics of the feeling body to be the key to human selfunderstanding. They both see emotion as a paradigmatic form of embodied consciousness. What has remained an implicit and intuitive view in James gains a pronounced philosophical articulation in Patočka.

A propósito de la fenomenología platónica de Jan Patocka, se muestra la íntima conexión entre platonismo, fenomenología y teatro en la obra del filósofo checo, así como en su discípulo Vaclav Havel. Se presenta ahora tan solo un desarrollo preliminar que se concentrará posteriormente en una reflexión sobre la dramaticidad del diálogo platónico

The article deals with the problem of human rights in the context Jan Patočka’s philosophy. In philosophical discourse this issue usually emerges as the problem of grounding of human rights in Patočka’s later phenomenology and is closely and legitimately connected to a vision of his political involvement that unites philosophical theory with living practice. This article approaches the problem of human rights from a different perspective and finds reasons why Patočka was not only a proponent of human rights, but also a critique of their potentially decadent forms originating in inauthentic understanding of human freedom. For this reason the article focuses on Patočka’s critique of liberalism.

As Karl Löwith suggested, modern philosophy of history secularizes Christian Heilsgeschichte by turning the eschaton into an immanent telos of the historical process. This article agrees with Löwith that there is an essential relation between the modern understanding of history and the Christian model. Yet, in drawing on the philosophy of history of Jan Patočka, it shows that for modern philosophy of history, there is a second option of dealing with the eschaton. Just as the Christian eschaton constitutes history also in urging to make a decision for Christ here and now, modern history constantly calls for making a decision concerning its meaning. According to Patočka, however, the ultimate meaning of history cannot be specified. Rather, meaning realizes itself in the question of meaning. One might speak here of a “crossed-out eschatology” (durchgestrichene Eschatologie) that stands in opposition to the idea of human self-redemption, even if it is thoroughly modern.

The paper analyses the fundaments of Zdeněk Kožmín's interpretative approach and outlines the similarities between his methodology and structuralism, phenomenology, hermeneutics and deconstructivism. Apart from general issues concerning interpretation, the paper focuses on Kožmín's contribution to the theory of interpretation, specifically the "blow-up" method and the vision of an author's poetics through the categories of space and time. The paper also outlines the origins of some of Kožmín's studies.

There are questions that are so important that it is a pity to spoil them with answers. No doubt, the question of God is one of them. Contrary to many presuppositions, theology is not capable of providing us with the final answers in this respect. On the contrary, theology professed as fides quaerens intellectum is an ongoing struggle with questions. Modernity interrupted this paradigm of theological questioning. Theology was withdrawn from the realm of understanding and shifted to the realm of explanation. Modernity brought the univocalization of God. Nonetheless, the attempts to tackle the question of God lead to hegemonic narratives about God. Such narratives are rightly criticized in a postmodern context for their totalizing pretensions. The problem of postmodern criticism is its one-sided emphasis on the apophatic dimension of theological discourse. I propose that theology can go a step further beyond postmodernity. In order to do so, I deal with the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka, who provides an opportunity to rethink God from the perspective of questioning in a new way. Patočka’s insistence on problematicity is the main reading key of his work. In this line of though, I interpret Patočka’s student Tomáš Halík and his thesis about the necessity to take the metaphor of an unknown God into account. I argue that theology must avoid the temptation to remove God from the question and make a well-known God of him. The time has come for theologians to turn their answers back into questions and dwell with them. Navzdory mnoha předpokladům, ani teologie není schopna poskytnout v tomto ohledu konečné odpovědi. Teologie pojatá jako fides quaerens intellectum je nepřetržitý nekončící zápas s otázkami. Moderna narušila toto paradigma teologického myšlení. Modernita učinila z pojmu Boha pojem „univocitní“ a vyjmula jej z oblasti otázek. Teologie napříště náležela do oblasti vysvětlení. Avšak pokusy zodpovědět otázku po Bohu s konečnou platností vedou k hegemonii. Tento způsob myšlení je právem kritizován postmodernou. Problém postmoderní kritiky je však její jednostranný důraz na apofatickou dimenzi teologického diskursu. V tomto článku tvrdím, že teologie může nejen přijmout některé aspekty postmoderní kritiky, ale dokonce postmodernu překonat. S tímto úkolem se vyrovnávám za pomoci myšlení českého filosofa Jana Patočky, který otevírá příležitost k přehodnocení otázky po Bohu. Patočkův důraz na problematičnost je hlavním interpretačním klíčem. V tomto duchu dále interpretuji i Patočkova žáka Tomáše Halíka a jeho návrh metafory o neznámém Bohu jako způsobu, jak se s otázkou po Bohu v dnešním kontextu vyrovnat. V závěru argumentuji ve prospěch teze, že teologie se musí vyhnout pokušení vyjmout Boha z výhně otázek a učinit z něj dobře známého Boha/bůžka. Nadešel čas, aby teologové obrátili své odpovědi zpět v otázky.

Along with the notion of war in general, the so-called war on terror has been, since its inception in 2001, the subject of much debate and theorization. French thinker Gilles Andréani discusses the appropriateness of the term "war" to apply to the present conflict; Antonio Negri has argued how the State's use of the concept of peace justifies its engagement in warfare in general. I approach the conversation, however, by presenting the thoughts of 20th century Czech philosopher Jan Patočka on the relationship between war and peace. Here, I utilize his views, formulated in the context of Soviet control of Eastern Europe, to deconstruct the Bush administration's declaration of war on a concept; in this case, terror. In what follows, I delineate the main aspects of Patočka's understanding of continuous warfare in the 20th century, after which I apply them to some of the central features of the Bush administration's war rhetoric. Additionally, I suggest that Patočka's notion of the solidarity of the shaken may provide a starting point from which all of those involved in the conflict may begin to move forward.

Příspěvek se zabývá pohyby lidské existence a snaží se popsat jejich zvláštní "topografii" – přičemž pozornost je vždy věnována celkové lidské existenci. Prostředí těchto pohybů navrhujeme nazývat homodromem. Sekundárním cílem je získat širší základ pro kontext sportu. Zaprvé (I) analyzujeme dva krajní postoje týkající se našich možností vytvářet konkrétní a osobní projekty našeho způsobu života: na jedné straně je představují mytologické sudičky a na druhé straně zvláště existencialisté se svým konceptem "prázdné svobody". Vyrovnaný postoj přináší český filosof Jan Patočka na pozadí Heidegge rovy proslulé Dasein analýzy (II). Zdá se, že jde o nejúplnější pohled týkající se pohybu naší existence. Tento specifický pohyb rozdělil do tří fází: 1. pohyb sebezakotvení, instiktivní pohyb naší existence; 2. pohyb sebezbavení se, pohyb kdy se smiřujeme s realitou, s níž jsme v kontaktu; 3. pohyb sebenalezení, který může být popsán jako "prožívání pravdy". Tuto strukturu se snažíme pečlivě analyzovat. Všechny tři pohyby jsou také nazírány skrze vztahy k dalším lidem. Další část (III) ukazuje zvláštní "topografii" lidské existence ve své dynamice. Sledujeme zde zvláště "vertikální transcendentnost" a pozornost věnujeme jak zkušenosti se zenitem, tak i nadirem. Dále uvádíme některé faktory, které mají silnější vliv na náš osobní homodrom: existenciálie jako "kategorie" lidské existence, EHE (Exceptional Human Experiences, tj. výjimečné lidské zkušenosti) a další hluboké zkušenosti různého druhu, horizonty externích vlivů – horizonty času, smyslu, horizonty sociálních vlivů atd., hodnoty a jejich hierarchie. Používáme je v kontextu sportu (IV). Zvláštní pozornost je věnována termínu metanoia a posuzujeme dva důležité zlomy na homodromu sportovce. Místo závěru jsou otevřeny související otázky (V). The paper deals with movements of human existence and tries to describe a special "topography" of them – with permanent attention to the whole of human existence. We promote calling the scene of these movements a homodrom. To gain a wider background for a context of sport is a secondary aim. Firstly (I) we analyse two extreme attitudes concerning our possibilities of creating concrete and personal projects of our way of life: represented by mythological Moerae on the one hand, and especially by existentialists with their concept of "empty freedom" on the other hand. A balanced position is given by Czech philosopher Jan Patočka against the background of Heidegger's well-known Dasein analyses (II). It seems to be the most complete view concerning a movement of our existence. He divided this specific movement into three stages: 1. the movement of self-anchoring, an instinctive movement of our existence, 2. the movement of self-prolongation, the movement of our coming to terms with the reality we are involved with, 3. the movement of self-gaining, which can be described as "living in the truth". We try to analyse this structure subtly. All three movements are also viewed in a modality of relation to other people. The next part (III) shows a special "topography" of human existence in its dynamism. Here we follow especially a "vertical transcendency" and pay attention to both zenith and nadir experience. Further we list some factors with a stronger influence upon our personal homodrom: existentials as "categories" of human existence, EHEs (exceptional human experiences) and other deep experiences of various sorts, horizons of external influences – horizons of time, of sense, horizons of social influences etc., values and their hierarchy. We use them in a context of sport (IV). Special attention is paid to the term metanoia and we judge two important turning points in a athlete’s homodrom. Related questions are opened instead of a conclusion (V).

Článek představuje filosofii Jana Patočky, a to především jeho tři životní pohyby, kterými se zabývá v dílech "Přirozený svět jako filosofický problém", "Kacířské eseje o filosofii dějin" a "Tělo, společenství, jazyk, svět". Patočka tyto tři pohyby lidské existence nazývá "pohyb akceptace", "pohyb obrany" a "pohyb pravdy" (názvy podle knihy "Kacířské eseje o filosofii dějin"). Tyto tři životní pohyby dělí toho, k čemu se člověk vztahuje (referent). Referent pak určuje každý jeho pohyb. Nejdříve se v textu věnujeme pojetí člověka jakožto žité tělesnosti a pojmu referent. Dále podle Patočkova díla popisujeme jeho chápání každého ze tří pohybů. Po popsání každého životního pohybu se zabýváme lidským pohybem z hlediska tělesné výchovy (v nejširším pojetí) a sportu v rámci daného životního pohybu. Pohyb akceptace je chápán jako zakořenění a přijetí člověka do světa a prvotní pochopení vlastních možností. V kontextu tělesné výchovy se jedná o naučení se zacházet s vlastním tělem a zvládnutí vlastního pohybu coby tělesná bytost, především skrze napodobování ostatních a jejich snahu nás uvést do jejich světa. Pohyb obrany je sférou vlastní zaneprázdněnosti prací a možnostmi, které nacházíme ve světě. Patočka tento pohyb popisuje jako sebeprodloužení, projekci do věcí a sebeobjektivizaci. Člověk zde přebírá různé pravdy a řídí se jimi, aniž by je příliš revidoval. Toto se děje i s lidským pohybem. Formy pohybu jsou již vytvořené a člověk si je má osvojit (např. sportovní formy). Toto se často děje jen s malým sebepoznáním, proto je otázkou, co tento přístup k sobě opravdu způsobuje. Člověk je zde většinou spoután svými pohybovými návyky, o kterých ani neví. Pohyb pravdy je pohybem otřesení těchto domnělých pravd. Je pohybem sebenalézání a připuštění toho, co v předchozích pohybech nebylo vidět, například naší smrtelnosti. Tělesná výchova v rámci pohybu pravdy vede k sebepoznávání, vědění o svém pohybu a zodpovědnosti za něj. Celkově vede tento pohyb ke svobodě. In this contribution we present the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka and his original concept of the three fundamental movements of human life. In this concept Patočka is inspired by the philosophy of Aristotle as well as by the philosophy of existence of Heidegger. First we interpret Patočka's ideas regarding the three movements of human existence, that is, the movement of acceptance, the movement of defense and the movement of truth. After characterizing each of the three movements of human existence, we shall present our own thoughts about human movement within each given life movement, so that the differences between each of the three movements of human existence can be seen from the perspective of everyday human movement, physical education and sports.

Tři životní pohyby (dle J. Patočky), které utvářejí podobu lidské existence, jsou také základními východisky a podobami vztahu ke světu, a náleží jim vlastní ontologický statut. Patočkova tematizace tohoto (specificky lidského) vývoje poskytuje základ výchovnému působení, které pak může být vedeno s ohledem na život vcelku, směřovat k naplnění jeho celkového smyslu. Pozornost je věnována způsobu, jakým je založena a nadále prožívána tělesnost, a to v souvislostech její situovanosti (v přírodním prostředí). Je dále diskutován význam tohoto (zakládajícího) vztahu pro vnímání jevů v jejich fenomenalitě, v tom, čím (podstatně) jsou; tedy nikoliv jako objektivní reality následně vystavené manipulativnímu působení. Patočka rozděluje život podle pohybů do jednotlivých fází a rozvoj tělesnosti tak umísťuje do jeho prvního období. Praktické závěry pro výchovu jsou následující: první z pohybů, pohyb přijetí je také tělesným vrůstáním do prostředí; zakládá určitou formu situovanosti a zvláštní možnosti ontologické. Jeho důsledný výkon (především) v dětství nás později vrací k původním významům, kterými se vztahujeme ke způsobu své (autentické) existence.
