Abstract Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies were performed on La0.88Sr0.12MnO3 (LSMO) nanocrystalline together with the measurement of its magnetization. Various spectrum parameters including line width, effective g-value and double-integrated intensities have been analyzed in detail. We found nonlinear behavior occurred in the inverse susceptibility far above the Curie temperature T C, indicating short-range ferromagnetic (FM) clusters and Griffiths-like phase behavior in the paramagnetic (PM) phase. Based on the variation of EPR spectra, except for a typical PM resonance peak, an extra resonance signal was observed in the lower field region and developed as temperature decreased from 320 K to 110 K, which gave a direct evidence of the existence of FM cluster in the PM region of LSMO nanocrystalline. We proposed that the appearance of the Griffiths phase was due to the short FM correlation in the PM regime enhanced by surface spin ordering.

Summary: Based on density functional theory calculations, we elucidated the tunability of the atomic structures and magnetic interactions of Co/Pt3 interface (one layer of hcp(0001) Co and three layers of fcc(111) Pt) and thus the skyrmion sizes using strain. The dispersion relations of the spin spiral in the opposite directions, E(q) and E(-q), were evaluated based on generalized Bloch equations. Effective exchange coupling (EC) and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI) parameters between different neighbors Ji and di at different lattice constants were derived by fitting the resulting spin spiral dispersion E(q) to EC model with DMI and E(q)-E(-q) formula, respectively. We observed an increase in DMI and a significant decrease in EC with an increase in strain. Hence, the size of Néel-type skyrmions determined by the ratio of EC/DMI can be controlled by applying strain, leading to an effective approach to tailor the formation of skyrmion lattices by inducing slight structural modifications on the magnetic thin films.

Abstract Magnetic and electronic transport properties of perovskite manganite La0.6Er0.1Sr0.3MnO3 have been thoroughly examined through the measurements of magnetization, electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR), and resistivity. It was found that the substitution of Er3+ for La3+ ions introduced the chemical disorder and additional strain in this sample. An extra resonance signal occurred in EPR spectra at high temperatures well above T C gives a strong evidence of electronic phase separation(EPS). The analysis of resistivity enable us to identify the polaronic transport mechanism in the paramagnetic region. At low temperature, a new ferromagnetic interaction generates in the microdomains of Er3+-disorder causing the second increase of magnetization. However, the new ferromagnetic interaction does not improve but decreases electronic transport due to the enhancement of interface resistance among neighboring domains. In view of a really wide temperature region for the EPS existence, this sample provides an ideal platform to uncover the evolution law of different magnetic structures in perovskite manganites.

Two-dimensional layered YbNi _3 Al _9 exhibits a chiral helimagnetic ground state, which is a candidate for the field-modulated chiral magnetic soliton. In this work, the magnetism and critical phenomenon of YbNi _3 Al _9 are investigated. As H ⊥ c , a magnetic step with loop can be observed in the field-dependent magnetization, which may be corresponding to the possible chiral magnetic soliton phase transition. Based on the analysis of isothermal magnetization around T _C , the critical exponents are obtained as β = 0.1370(2), γ = 1.7955(4), and δ = 14.1043(7), which fulfill the Widom scaling relation and Rushbrooke’s law. Moreover, the obtained critical exponents are testified by the modified Arrott plot and scaling hypothesis. The critical exponents of YbNi _3 Al _9 are close to the theoretically prediction of 2D-Ising model with the spatial-dimensionality n = 2 and spin-dimensionality d = 1, indicating one-dimensional magnetic coupling in the two-dimensional framework. Based on universality scaling, we construct the detailed H – T phase diagram around the phase transition with H ⊥ c , which reveals that the field-induced magnetic transition for H ⊥ c is of the first-order type.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation and immune dysfunction. Although various therapeutic approaches have been utilized for the treatment of RA in clinical applications, the low responsiveness of RA patients and undesired systemic toxicity are still unresolved problems. Targeting the resolution pathway of inflammation with pro-resolving mediators would evoke the protective actions of patient for combating the inflammation. Ac2–26, a 25-amino acid peptide derived from Annexin A (a pro-resolving mediator), has shown good efficacy in the treatment of inflammatory disorders. However, the low bioavailability of Ac2–26 peptides hinders their efficacy in vivo. In this paper, we formed PEGylated lipid nanoparticles (LDNPs) by the co-assembly of l-ascorbyl palmitate (L-AP) and N-(carbonyl methoxypolyethylene glycol-2000)-1,2-distearoyl-sn‑glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DSPE-PEG2k) to encapsulate and deliver Ac2–26 peptides to the arthritic rats. They showed good stability and biocompatibility. After being intravenously administrated, Ac2–26 peptide-loaded PEGylated lipid nanoparticles (ADNPs) showed the prolonged in vivo circulation time and enhanced accumulation in inflamed sites. In vivo therapeutic evaluations revealed that ADNPs could attenuate synovial inflammation and improve joint pathology. Therefore, the pro-resolving therapeutic strategy using ADNPs is effective in RA treatment.

Increasing understanding of the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has remarkably promoted the development of effective therapeutic regimens of RA. Nevertheless, the inadequate response to current therapies in a proportion of patients, the systemic toxicity accompanied by long-term administration or distribution in non-targeted sites and the comprised efficacy caused by undesirable bioavailability, are still unsettled problems lying across the full remission of RA. So far, these existing limitations have inspired comprehensive academic researches on nanomedicines for RA treatment. A variety of versatile nanocarriers with controllable physicochemical properties, tailorable drug release pattern or active targeting ability were fabricated to enhance the drug delivery efficiency in RA treatment. This review aims to provide an up-to-date progress regarding to RA treatment using nanomedicines in the last 5 years and concisely discuss the potential application of several newly emerged therapeutic strategies such as inducing the antigen-specific tolerance, pro-resolving therapy or regulating the immunometabolism for RA treatments.
