The effects of Aronia melanocarpa (AM) dietary supplementation on production performance, meat and egg quality, yolk volatile substances and antioxidant capacity of laying hens. A total of 480 Roman brown laying hens aged 25 wks were randomly divided into control, LAM, MAM and HAM groups and fed 0%, 1%, 4% and 7% AM, respectively. The results showed that AM dietary supplementation significantly increased the eggshell strength, significantly reduced 24 h dripping loss of breast and thigh muscles, and increased pH and 48 h dripping loss of breast and thigh muscles. Cooking loss was significantly lower only in the HAM group for breast muscle. The MAM group was able to significantly increase albumen height and Haugh units. Esters gradually decreased with the increase in AM content, and the addition of AM led to a decrease in alcoholic compounds but increased the contents of alkenes, alkanes, ketones, and acids. The dietary AM supplementation significantly reduces the MDA content of serum, liver, ovary, chest muscle, thigh muscle and yolk and increases the activities of GSH-Px, T-SOD and T-AOC. In summary, dietary AM supplementation could improve antioxidant capacity and expression of related genes, thereby improving meat and egg quality.

IntroductionPatients with breast cancer (BC) after surgery are prone to negative physiological and psychosocial discomforts which cause the poor quality of life (QoL) among the patients. Therefore, how to improve the disease management ability of BC patients and to alleviate these cancer-related negative experience are particularly important. This study purpose to explore the potential effects of personalized care based on OPT model on the perceived control and the QoL among patients with BC, and to provide effective clinical nursing intervention for BC patients.MethodsIn this study, nonsynchronous controlled experiments were carried out on patients with BC, and the patients were randomly allocated to the control (n = 40) and intervention (n = 40) groups. The patients in the control group were given routine care; while the patients in the intervention group were given personalized care based on OPT model. The perceived control ability and QoL of the two groups were measured before and after the intervention.ResultsThere were no significant differences in the total score of cancer experience and control efficacy of BC patients between the control group (61.15 ± 5.659, 41.80 ± 4.702) and the intervention group (60.58 ± 7.136, 42.15 ± 5.550) before intervention (p > 0.05). Diarrhea with physical weakness is a highly prevalent symptom in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Based on the dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) -induced mouse ulcerative colitis model, the present study was undertaken to investigate the effect and the possible mechanism of Hericium caput-medusae (Bull.: Fr.) Pers. fermentation concentrate polysaccharide (HFP) on diarrhea in mice. HFP alleviated DSS-induced symptoms in ulcerative colitis mice, including elevated body weight, increased colonic length as well as mucus layer thickness, and relief of diarrhea. Daily assays revealed that HFP regulated the expression and activity of intestinal ion transport proteins as well as alleviated inflammation. HFP could also reduce the rate of intestinal transit and improved the expression of the tight junction. In summary, HFP had a palliative effect on diarrhea in DSS-induced preliminary stage of ulcerative colitis, which basically make HFP a promising drug for the relief of ulcerative colitis diarrhea.

The continuous ovulation of laying hens during the peak period is likely to cause oxidative stress, resulting in a reduction in the laying cycle over time. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant effects of Aronia melanocarpa (AM) in the diet and its effect on the yolk precursor content caused by ovulation in laying hens during the peak period. A total of 300 25-week-old Roman brown laying hens were randomly divided into five groups with six replicates in each group, 10 in each replicate. The control group was fed a basal diet, the positive control group was fed a Vitamin C (VC) plus basal diet, and the experimental group was fed 1%, 4%, and 7% doses of AM plus diet according to the principle of energy and nitrogen requirements, which lasted eight weeks. At the end of the study, the egg quality, biochemical, and antioxidant markers, as well as mRNA and protein expressions, were evaluated to determine the potential signaling pathways involved. Results showed that the addition of AM to the feed increased the weight of laying hens at the peak of egg production and improved egg quality. The biochemical markers, as well as the antioxidant parameters in the serum, liver, and ovarian tissues, were ameliorated. The gene and protein expression of recombinant kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) in the liver and ovarian tissues was decreased, while nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression was increased. The feed supplemented with AM also increased the estrogen contents and lipid parameters, as well as the gene and protein expressions related to the yolk precursor. Feed supplemented with AM could improve the egg quality and the oxidative stress caused by the ovulation process of laying hens during the peak egg production period by activating the Keap1/Nrf2 signaling pathway. These results suggest that the feed supplemented with 1% AM and 4% AM can improve egg production in peak laying hens.

Abstract Response surface methodology (RSM) including three variables was performed to optimize the extraction parameters of Astragalus cicer L. polysaccharides (ACPs). The influence of different drying techniques on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant abilities of ACPs were evaluated. The ACPs were dried with hot air (HD), vacuum (VD) and freeze drying (FD) methods. The optimal conditions for ACPs extraction were as follows: water to raw material ratio of 25 mL/g, extraction time of 61 min and temperature of 75 °C. Under these parameters, an ACPs yield of 10.97% was obtained. HPLC analysis showed that the monosaccharide compositions of the three ACPs dried with HD, VD or FD techniques were identical. The three ACPs exhibited antioxidant abilities in a concentration-dependent manner. ACPs dried with the FD method (FD-ACPs) had the best antioxidant activities, which might be related to their smaller molecular weight and higher uronic acid content. At the determined concentration of 1 mg/mL, the ferric reducing power, and DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging capacities of FD-ACPs were 0.762, 75.30% and 99.21%, respectively. Therefore, FD was a good choice for the drying of Astragalus cicer L. polysaccharides.
