Eccentric training induces greater hypertrophy while causing more muscle damage than concentric training. This study examined the effects of small-range eccentric contractions (SR-ECCs) and large-range eccentric contractions (LR-ECCs) on muscle morphology, contractility, and damage in rats. Thirty male Fischer 344 rats were divided into five groups: small-range ECC single-bout (SR-ECCSB, n = 4), large-range ECC single-bout (LR-ECCSB, n = 4), SR-ECC intervention (SR-ECCIntv, n = 7), LR-ECC intervention (LR-ECCIntv, n = 8), and control (Cont, n = 7). These groups underwent transcutaneous electrical stimulation involving 80 ECCs twice a week for four weeks. The results indicated that the LR-ECCSB group had more Evans blue dye-positive fibers than other groups. The SR-ECCIntv group showed no increase in the mean myofiber cross-sectional area. However, Pax7+ and Ki67+ cells significantly increased in both ECCIntv groups compared to the Cont group, and the connective tissue area was significantly greater in the LR-ECCIntv than in others. Muscle force was lower in both ECCIntv groups compared to the Cont group. These findings suggest that SR-ECC intervention may induce a smaller increase in the number of fibers with a large myofiber cross-sectional area and satellite cell proliferation with less muscle damage and myofibrosis compared to LR-ECCs.

Propulsive force is a determinant of swimming performance. Several methods have been proposed to estimate the propulsive force in human swimming; however, their practical use in coaching is limited. Herein, we propose a novel method for estimating the propulsive force generated by swimmers’ hands using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and pressure sensors. In Experiment 1, we use a hand model to examine the effect of a hand-mounted IMU on pressure around the hand model at several flow velocities and water flow directions. In Experiment 2, we compare the propulsive force estimated using the IMU and pressure sensors (FIMU) via an underwater motion-capture system and pressure sensors (FMocap). Five swimmers had markers, pressure sensors, and IMUs attached to their hands and performed front crawl swimming for 25 m twice at each of nine different swimming speeds. The results show that the hand-mounted IMU affects the resultant force; however, the effect of the hand-mounted IMU varies with the flow direction. The mean values of FMocap and FIMU are similar (19.59 ± 7.66 N and 19.36 ± 7.86 N, respectively; intraclass correlation coefficient(2,1) = 0.966), and their waveforms are similar (coefficient of multiple correlation = 0.99). These results indicate that the IMU can estimate the same level of propulsive force as an underwater motion-capture system.

The mass and structure of bone tissue adapt to the mechanical loads imparted by gravity and movement, and are controlled by the balance between bone formation and bone resorption. The primary adaptations of bone to disuse are demineralization and loss (thinning) of trabecular and cortical bone. Exercise training and electrical muscle stimulation (ES) induce adaptive changes in bone that improve bone strength and inhibit bone loss. ES has been generally applied to patients undergoing physical rehabilitation to maintain and/or recover muscle mass and force-generating capacity in disused muscles. ES-induced muscle contraction of disused muscle can also ameliorate deleterious post-disuse adaptation of bone. The mechanical effects of ES-induced muscle contraction are essential for the maintenance of bone mass and strength, which are achieved through the cooperative functions of osteocytes, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts. The effects of ES, however, are dependent on the stimulation paradigm, including the intensity, frequency, and number of stimuli and the duration of the intervention. This review summarizes the literature on the effects of ES-induced muscle contraction on disuse osteopenia.

Magnetoencephalography is primarily sensitive to current sources tangential to the skull. Therefore, currents generated in area 3b of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and area 4 of primary motor cortex (M1) located on the posterior and anterior banks of the central sulcus, respectively, are easily detected. The movement-related cortical magnetic fields (MRCFs) following voluntary movement and the somatosensory magnetic fields (SEFs) generated by peripheral mixed nerve stimulation (e.g., median nerve) have been widely used to investigate the physiology of normal somatosensory cortical processing. Here, we describe the MRCFs produced by two types of movement (experiment 1) and the SEFs elicited by motor point stimulation (experiment 2), passive movement (experiments 3 and 4), and mechanical stimulation (experiments 5, 6, and 7). In addition, we examined the modulation of these fields.

Recent research has shown that the human motor cortex can be modulated by the application of static magnetic fields through the scalp. Transcranial static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS) has since received significant attention as a new non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) technique alongside conventional methods, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation. The advantages of the strong neodymium, iron and boron (NdFeB) magnet used in tSMS over other NIBS methods include the ease of use, absence of uncomfortable sensations for subjects, a lack of necessity for high operational skills and expensive devices, and conclusive sham stimulation allowing for controlled experiments and randomized controlled clinical trials. Hence, tSMS may be a new potential NIBS tool to modulate cerebral excitability.

Transcranial static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS) is a novel and inexpensive, non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) technique. Here, we performed non-invasive modulation of intra-epidermal electrical stimulation-evoked potentials (IES-EPs) by applying tSMS or sham stimulation over the primary motor (M1) and somatosensory (S1) cortices in 18 healthy volunteers for 15 min. We recorded EPs after IES before, right after, and 10 min after tSMS. The IES-EP amplitude was significantly reduced immediately after tSMS over M1, whereas tSMS over S1 and sham stimulation did not affect the IES-EP amplitude. Thus, tSMS may affect cortical nociceptive processing. Although the results of intervention for experimental acute pain in healthy subjects cannot be directly translated into the clinical situation, tSMS may be a potentially useful NIBS method for managing chronic pain, in addition to standard of care treatments.

We investigated the effects of different patterns of mechanical tactile stimulation (MS) on corticospinal excitability by measuring the motor-evoked potential (MEP). This was a single-blind study that included nineteen healthy subjects. MS was applied for 20 min to the right index finger. MS intervention was defined as simple, lateral, rubbing, vertical, or random. Simple intervention stimulated the entire finger pad at the same time. Lateral intervention stimulated with moving between left and right on the finger pad. Rubbing intervention stimulated with moving the stimulus probe, fixed by protrusion pins. Vertical intervention stimulated with moving in the forward and backward directions on the finger pad. Random intervention stimulated to finger pad with either row protrudes. MEPs were measured in the first dorsal interosseous muscle to transcranial magnetic stimulation of the left motor cortex before, immediately after, and 5–20 min after intervention. Following simple intervention, MEP amplitudes were significantly smaller than preintervention, indicating depression of corticospinal excitability. Following lateral, rubbing, and vertical intervention, MEP amplitudes were significantly larger than preintervention, indicating facilitation of corticospinal excitability. The modulation of corticospinal excitability depends on MS patterns. These results contribute to knowledge regarding the use of MS as a neurorehabilitation tool to neurological disorder.

During submaximal isometric contraction, there are two different load types: production of a constant force against a rigid restraint (force task), and maintenance of position against a constant load (position task). Previous studies reported that the time to task failure during a fatigue task was twice as long in the force task compared with the position task. Sensory feedback processing may contribute to these differences. The purpose of the current study was to determine the influence of load types during static muscle contraction tasks on the gating effect, i.e., attenuation of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) and the cortical silent period (cSP). Ten healthy subjects contracted their right first dorsal interosseus muscle by abducting their index finger for 90 s, to produce a constant force against a rigid restraint that was 20% of the maximum voluntary contraction (force task), or to maintain a constant position with 10° abduction of the metacarpophalangeal joint against the same load (position task). Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded from C3' by stimulating either the right ulnar or median nerve at the wrist while maintaining contraction. The cortical silent period (cSP) was also elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation. Reduction of the amplitude of the P45 component of SEPs was significantly larger during the position task than during the force task and under control rest conditions when the ulnar nerve, but not the median nerve, was stimulated. The position task had a significantly shorter cSP duration than the force task. These results suggest the need for more proprioceptive information during the position task than the force task. The shorter duration of the cSP during the position task may be attributable to larger amplitude of heteronymous short latency reflexes. Sensorimotor modulations may differ with load type during constant finger force or position tasks.
