This study investigates integrating pixelated colloidal quantum dot (QD) layers into LCDs to enhance color conversion and pixel-level enrichment for future display technologies. We developed miniature prototypes with pixel-sized QD color-converter layers seamlessly integrated into the backlight unit (BLU). The prototypes, featuring red- and green-emitting QD pixels with a single blue LED on glass substrates, underwent rigorous environmental tests such as Thermal Shock Test (TST), Thermal Cycle Test (TCT), High Temperature High Humidity Test (HHT), and Low Temperature Test (LTT). The assessment covered the uniformity of light, spectral radiance, and CIE color coordinates, revealing insights into the performance of the QD layers through the analysis of pre- and post-environmental tests. Despite a decrease in luminance, the QD layers exhibited resilience against rapid temperature variations, enduring thermal shock, and thermal cycle tests without cracking. However, high-temperature and high-humidity conditions revealed susceptibility. Low-temperature stress tests demonstrated stable color gamut coordinates with no discernible shifts. This research fills a notable gap in the existing literature by conducting comprehensive environmental tests on pixel-sized QD utilization in display technologies, providing valuable insights to enhance the stability, durability, and reliability of QD displays.

Colloidal quantum wells are highly promising for applications of solution-processed lasers, but their performance is limited by multi-excitonic nature of the materials. Here, the authors demonstrate optical gain in graded alloy core/shell CdSe/CdS@CdZnS quantum wells at less than one exciton per particle resulting in ultralow thresholds.

Abstract Van der Waals heterojunctions are fast‐emerging quantum structures fabricated by the controlled stacking of two‐dimensional (2D) materials. Owing to the atomically thin thickness, their carrier properties are not only determined by the host material itself, but also defined by the interlayer interactions, including dielectric environment, charge trapping centers, and stacking angles. The abundant constituents without the limitation of lattice constant matching enable fascinating electrical, optical, and magnetic properties in van der Waals heterojunctions toward next‐generation devices in photonics, optoelectronics, and information sciences. This review focuses on the charge and energy transfer processes and their dynamics in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), a family of quantum materials with strong excitonic effects and unique valley properties, and other related 2D materials such as graphene and hexagonal‐boron nitride. In the first part, we summarize the ultrafast charge transfer processes in van der Waals heterojunctions, including its experimental evidence and theoretical understanding, the interlayer excitons at the TMDC interfaces, and the hot carrier injection at the graphene/TMDCs interface. In the second part, the energy transfer, including both Förster and Dexter types, are reviewed from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. Finally, we highlight the typical charge and energy transfer applications in photodetectors and summarize the challenges and opportunities for future development in this field.

We demonstrate a systematic way to understand and select the accelerating voltage for maximizing cathodoluminescence (CL) by correlating the carrier diffusion length with the efficiency of ultraviolet (UV) InGaN/AlGaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs). We showed that the absorption of MQWs benefits from the absorbed energy within the diffusion length below the MQWs. With this understanding, we have achieved good agreement between the experimental data of and the Monte Carlo (CASINO) simulations on the dependence of acceleration voltage and QW number on InGaN/AlGaN MQW structures. These findings indicate that CL-based UV generation from carefully engineered III-N MQW structures with an appropriate number of QWs is highly promising. The understanding and application of this work can be extended to electron-beam pumped devices emitting in deep-UV (200–280 nm) wavelengths.

Strain-reduced micro-LEDs in 50 μm × 50 μm, 100 μm × 100 μm, 200 μm × 200 μm, 500 μm × 500 μm, and 1,000 μm × 1,000 μm sizes were grown on a patterned c-plane sapphire substrate using partitioned growth with the metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique. The size effect on the optical properties and the indium concentration for the quantum wells were studied experimentally. Here, we revealed that the optical properties can be improved by decreasing the chip size (from 1,000 to 100 µm), which can correspondingly reduce the in-plane compressive stress. However, when the chip size is further reduced to 50 μm × 50 μm, the benefit of strain release is overridden by additional defects induced by the higher indium incorporation in the quantum wells and the efficiency of the device decreases. The underlying mechanisms of the changing output power are uncovered based on different methods of characterization. This work shows the rules of thumb to achieve optimal power performance for strain-reduced micro-LEDs through the proposed partitioned growth process.

Abstract Here, we report efficient composition-tunable Cu-doped ZnInS/ZnS (core and core/shell) colloidal nanocrystals (CNCs) synthesized by using a colloidal non-injection method. The initial precursors for the synthesis were used in oleate form rather than in powder form, resulting in a nearly defect-free photoluminescence (PL) emission. The change in Zn/In ratio tunes the percentage incorporation of Cu in CNCs. These highly monodisperse Cu-doped ZnInS CNCs having variable Zn/In ratios possess peak emission wavelength tunable from 550 to 650 nm in the visible spectrum. The quantum yield (QY) of these synthesized Cd-free CNCs increases from 6.0 to 65.0% after coating with a ZnS shell. The CNCs possessing emission from a mixed contribution of deep trap and dopant states to only dominant dopant-related Stokes-shifted emission are realized by a careful control of stoichiometric ratio of different reactant precursors during synthesis. The origin of this shift in emission was understood by using steady state and time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) spectroscopy studies. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, these blue excitable Cu-doped ZnInS/ZnS CNCs have been integrated with commercial blue LEDs to generate white-light emission (WLE). The suitable combination of these highly efficient doped CNCs results led to a Commission Internationale de l’Enclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.33, 0.31) at a color coordinate temperature (CCT) of 3694 K, with a luminous efficacy of optical radiation (LER) of 170 lm/Wopt and a color rendering index (CRI) of 88.

This paper reports a wireless passive resonator architecture that is used as a fiducial electronic marker (e-marker) intended for internal marking purposes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a class of double-layer, sub-cm helical resonators were microfabricated and tuned to the operating frequency of 123 MHz for a three T MRI system. Effects of various geometrical parameters on the resonance frequency of the e-marker were studied, and the resulting specific absorption rate (SAR) increase was analyzed using a full-wave microwave solver. The B1+ field distribution was calculated, and experimental results were compared. As an exemplary application to locate subdural electrodes, these markers were paired with subdural electrodes. It was shown that such sub-cm self-resonant e-markers with biocompatible constituents can be designed and used for implant marking, with sub-mm positioning accuracy, in MRI. In this application, a free-space quality factor (Q-factor) of approximately 50 was achieved for the proposed resonator architecture. However, this structure caused an SAR increase in certain cases, which limits its usage for in vivo imaging practices. The findings indicate that these implantable resonators hold great promise for wireless fiducial e-marking in MRI as an alternative to multimodal imaging.

We report the improved performance of InGaN/GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) through the design and the formation of the InGaxNyOz interfacial layer, which maintains high reflectivity of silver and forms good ohmic contact between pristine silver and p-GaN. The interfacial layer was designed and formed by depositing a thin layer of indium tin oxide (ITO) on top of p-GaN, followed by thermal annealing, to enable the interdiffusion and the intermixing of In, Sn, Ga, O, and N atoms. Both electrical and optical performances of the LED with the optimized InGaxNyOz interfacial layer are improved, thus achieving the highest wall-plug efficiency, compared with those LEDs with and without ITO layers at operation current.

In this work, we investigate a method proposed for vessel detection and coil powering in an all-surface inductive heating system composed of outer squircle coils. Besides conventional circular coils, coils with different shapes such as outer squircle coils are used for and enable efficient all-surface inductive heating. Validity of the method, which relies on measuring inductance and resistance values of a loaded coil at different frequencies, is experimentally demonstrated for a coil with shape different from conventional circular coil. Simple setup was constructed with a small coil to model an all-surface inductive heating system. Inductance and resistance maps were generated by measuring coil’s inductance and resistance values at different frequencies loaded by a plate made of different materials and located at various positions. Results show that in an induction hob for various coil geometries it is possible to detect a vessel’s presence, to identify its material type and to specify its position on the hob surface by considering inductance and resistance of the coil measured on at least two different frequencies. The studied method is important in terms of enabling safe, efficient and user flexible heating in an all-surface inductive heating system by automatically detecting the vessel’s presence and powering on only the coils that are loaded by the vessel with predetermined current levels.

We report remote strain and displacement measurement during elastic and plastic deformation using a metamaterial-based wireless and passive sensor. The sensor is made of a comb-like nested split ring resonator (NSRR) probe operating in the near-field of an antenna, which functions as both the transmitter and the receiver. The NSRR probe is fixed on a standard steel reinforcing bar (rebar), and its frequency response is monitored telemetrically by a network analyzer connected to the antenna across the whole stress-strain curve. This wireless measurement includes both the elastic and plastic region deformation together for the first time, where wired technologies, like strain gauges, typically fail to capture. The experiments are further repeated in the presence of a concrete block between the antenna and the probe, and it is shown that the sensing system is capable of functioning through the concrete. The comparison of the wireless sensor measurement with those undertaken using strain gauges and extensometers reveals that the sensor is able to measure both the average strain and the relative displacement on the rebar as a result of the applied force in a considerably accurate way. The performance of the sensor is tested for different types of misalignments that can possibly occur due to the acting force. These results indicate that the metamaterial-based sensor holds great promise for its accurate, robust and wireless measurement of the elastic and plastic deformation of a rebar, providing beneficial information for remote structural health monitoring and post-earthquake damage assessment.

We propose and demonstrate a wireless, passive, metamaterial-based sensor that allows for remotely monitoring submicron displacements over millimeter ranges. The sensor comprises a probe made of multiple nested split ring resonators (NSRRs) in a double-comb architecture coupled to an external antenna in its near-field. In operation, the sensor detects displacement of a structure onto which the NSRR probe is attached by telemetrically tracking the shift in its local frequency peaks. Owing to the NSRR’s near-field excitation response, which is highly sensitive to the displaced comb-teeth over a wide separation, the wireless sensing system exhibits a relatively high resolution ( 0.99 over 5 mm) and sensitivity (>12.7 MHz/mm in the 1–3 mm range). The sensor is also shown to be working in the linear region in a scenario where it is attached to a standard structural reinforcing bar. Because of its wireless and passive nature, together with its low cost, the proposed system enabled by the metamaterial probes holds a great promise for applications in remote structural health monitoring.

Remarkable progress has been made to date in the discovery of material binding peptides and their utilization in nanotechnology, which has brought new challenges and opportunities. Nowadays phage display is a versatile tool, important for the selection of ligands for proteins and peptides. This combinatorial approach has also been adapted over the past decade to select material-specific peptides. Screening and selection of such phage displayed material binding peptides has attracted great interest, in particular because of their use in nanotechnology. Phage display selected peptides are either synthesized independently or expressed on phage coat protein. Selected phage particles are subsequently utilized in the synthesis of nanoparticles, in the assembly of nanostructures on inorganic surfaces, and oriented protein immobilization as fusion partners of proteins. In this paper, we present an overview on the research conducted on this area. In this review we not only focus on the selection process, but also on molecular binding characterization and utilization of peptides as molecular linkers, molecular assemblers and material synthesizers.

We present circular architecture bioimplant strain sensors that facilitate a strong resonance frequency shift with mechanical deformation. The clinical application area of these sensors is for in vivo assessment of bone fractures. Using a rectangular geometry, we obtain a resonance shift of 330 MHz for a single device and 170 MHz for its triplet configuration (with three side-by-side resonators on chip) under an applied load of 3,920 N. Using the same device parameters with a circular isotropic architecture, we achieve a resonance frequency shift of 500 MHz for the single device and 260 MHz for its triplet configuration, demonstrating substantially increased sensitivity.

In this study, we show a wireless passive sensing system embedded in a reinforced concrete member successfully being employed for the measurement of relative displacement and strain in a simply supported beam experiment. The system utilizes electromagnetic coupling between the transceiver antenna located outside the beam, and the sensing probes placed on the reinforcing bar (rebar) surface inside the beam. The probes were designed in the form of a nested split-ring resonator, a metamaterial-based structure chosen for its compact size and high sensitivity/resolution, which is at µm/microstrains level. Experiments were performed in both the elastic and plastic deformation cases of steel rebars, and the sensing system was demonstrated to acquire telemetric data in both cases. The wireless measurement results from multiple probes are compared with the data obtained from the strain gages, and an excellent agreement is observed. A discrete time measurement where the system records data at different force levels is also shown. Practical issues regarding the placement of the sensors and accurate recording of data are discussed. The proposed sensing technology is demonstrated to be a good candidate for wireless structural health monitoring (SHM) of reinforced concrete members by its high sensitivity and wide dynamic range.

All-surface induction heating systems, typically comprising small-area coils, face a major challenge in detecting the presence of a metallic vessel and identifying its partial surface coverage over the coils to determine which of the coils to power up. The difficulty arises due to the fact that the user can heat vessels made of a wide variety of metals (and their alloys). To address this problem, we propose and demonstrate a new wireless detection methodology that allows for detecting the presence of metallic vessels together with uniquely sensing their surface coverages while also identifying their effective material type in all-surface induction heating systems. The proposed method is based on telemetrically measuring simultaneously inductance and resistance of the induction coil coupled with the vessel in the heating system. Here, variations in the inductance and resistance values for an all-surface heating coil loaded by vessels (made of stainless steel and aluminum) at different positions were systematically investigated at different frequencies. Results show that, independent of the metal material type, unique identification of the surface coverage is possible at all freqeuncies. Additionally, using the magnitude and phase information extracted from the coupled coil impedance, unique identification of the vessel effective material is also achievable, this time independent of its surface coverage.

We demonstrated graded-host phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes with high efficiency and reduced efficiency roll-off. The emissive layer of the graded host device consists of both electron and hole transport type hosts, 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazole-2-yl)benzene (TPBI) and 4,4′,4′′-tris(N-carbazolyl)triphenylamine, respectively, with graded composition, and the phosphorescent red emitter bis(2-phenylquinoline) (acetylacetonate) iridium(III), which was uniformly doped into the graded host matrix. The graded host device shows improved quantum efficiency and power efficiency with significantly reduced efficiency roll-off as compared to the unipolar-host and double layer heterojunction host devices.
