Endophytic microorganisms live inside the plants without causing any damage to their hosts. In the agricultural field, these endophytes might be a strategy of biological control for phytopathogens. We aimed to isolate endophytic fungi from yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) leaves, evaluating its biocontrol capacity by in vitro antagonism against phytopathogen Colletotrichum sp. CNPU378. We also carried out greenhouse experiments in bean seedlings. A high colonization frequency was obtained (89%), and the molecular identification based on DNA sequencing attested Colletotrichum as the most frequent genus and minor occurrence of Curvularia endophytes. The endophytes tested showed different types of competitive interactions in in vitro antagonism inhibition rate ranging from 28.8 to 48.8%. There were 10 promising antagonists tested for their antagonist activity of crude extracts of secondary metabolites, in which strain PE-36 (20.8%) stood out among the other strains evaluated. In the greenhouse assay, plants inoculated only with endophyte Colletotrichum sp. PE-36 was symptomless and suggest that the endophyte strengthened the growth promotion in common bean plants, especially in the root length and number of leaves when compared to control plants and other treatments. Despite many fungi of Colletotrichum genus being described as causative agents of anthracnose, in this study, the plant sampled was colonized predominantly by Colletotrichum endophytes living in asymptomatic relationship. By the way, we come across a Colletotrichum sp. endophyte able to antagonize a Colletotrichum sp. pathogen.

Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), popularly known as the sugarcane borer, is the greatest pest of sugarcane crops, and is responsible for considerable economic damages. This pest is difficult to manage, because it lives inside the culm when immature, creates galleries that weaken the plants, reduces the biomass and the quality of sugarcane juice, and lowers agricultural productivity. The excessive use of chemical insecticides leads to resistance in these pests and damages the environment, fauna, and flora, and these products are expensive. Thus, an indispensable component of pest management is biological control. All animal and plant species have natural enemies (parasitoids, predators, and entomopathogens) that affect different stages of development. Parasitoids represent an important tool in the biological control of lepidopteran pests. Knowledge of pupal parasitoid activity is important for the development of biological control strategies for this pest, which causes significant losses. Therefore, this paper uses published data to highlight the importance and effectiveness of parasitoids against sugarcane borer pupae.

ABSTRACT: To evaluate the toxic effect of commercial formulations of neem oil, Azadirachta indica A. Juss, pre-pupae (PP), young pupae (YP) and old pupae (OP) of Diatraea saccharalis F. (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) were sprayed with the diluted extract in distilled water at concentrations of 0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%. The neem extract caused concentration-dependent effects on mortality of pupae, and the pupae that failed to emerge in adults had multiple abnormalities. The longevity of pupae that emerged in adults (YP and OP group) did not differ from the control group. The abnormalities found in adults were related to mortality in all treatments, except at the concentration of 1.0%. Fertility was assessed according to the oviposition of adult females from the YP group that showed no abnormalities, through the evaluation of the number of deposited eggs and the rate of undeveloped eggs. The results showed a reduction in the number of eggs laid and an increase in the percentage of undeveloped eggs. These results show that neem oil has a high potential to control the toughest stage of the sugarcane borer and also reduces the further development. Therefore, commercial formulations of neem oil have a toxic effect on pupae and adults of D. saccharalis.

A urbanização gerou a necessidade de escoar as águas pluviais de dentro das cidades. Porém, sem o planejamento prévio e estudo de suas consequências para o meio, a drenagem pluvial foi uma prática desconsiderada para os setores governamentais e população. Somente a partir do século XIX, as cidades brasileiras mais densamente povoadas, perceberam a importância da elaboração de projetos destinados a drenagem pluvial, devido aos grandes problemas encontrados após a precipitação das águas, e a poluição das mesmas por efluentes lançados nas galerias. Um exemplo destes poluentes, são os resíduos provenientes das atividades de funilaria e pintura automobilística, setor em pleno desenvolvimento nos dias atuais. Esta revisão bibliográfica dará ênfase nas águas pluviais, e seus principais poluentes, especificamente, os metais pesados relacionados com as empresas de funilaria e pintura, que se encontram na cidade de Maringá-PR, pois, a partir de observações compiladas, constatou-se que não há um controle efetivo sobre os efluentes resultantes das atividades efetuadas nestas empresas, que são escoados diretamente para as galerias pluviais da cidade sem tratamento prévio, e com o aumento das chuvas este problema se agrava ainda mais.

Coleoptera é uma das mais abundantes e diversificadas ordens na classe insecta. Muitas regiões no Brasil ainda permanecem pouco estudadas restando lacunas no conhecimento e distribuição de espécimes desta ordem. Com objetivo de ampliar conhecimentos relacionados às famílias ocorrentes no Paraná foi realizado um estudo no Parque do Ingá, localizado no município de Maringá, noroeste do Paraná, Brasil sendo o local uma área urbana constituída por floresta semidecidual pertencente ao bioma Mata Atlântica. Entre agosto de 2013 e julho de 2014, quinzenalmente, foram realizadas coletas de campo utilizando armadilhas de solo ou “pitfall”, armadilhas de cor e coletas ativas. As armadilhas de cor não se mostraram adequadas para a captura desses insetos, entretanto as armadilhas de solo foram eficientes e, aquelas com isca de carne bovina atraíram maior número de espécimes. As análises mostraram variações na distribuição das famílias, bem como na abundância das mesmas: Curculionidae, Nitidulidae, Cerambycidae, Chrysomelidae e Scarabaeidae foram as mais abundantes. Registramos diferença entre o número de indivíduos coletados mensalmente, ficando demonstrado que temperatura e a umidade influenciaram no ciclo de vida e na distribuição dos mesmos.

Atualmente, o controle biológico aplicado assume papel extraordinário em programas de manejo integrado de pragas (MIP), principalmente em um momento que se discute muito sobre a produção integrada rumo à agricultura sustentável. Portanto, o objetivo desta revisão de literatura, através da base de dados Scielo, foi levantar dados dos últimos onze anos de trabalhos realizados com agentes parasitoides de pragas agrícolas no Brasil. Dentre os agentes parasitoides encontrados, os mais frequentes foram Palmistichus elaeisis, Podisus distinctus, Trichospilus diatraeae, Telenomus sp. e Trichogramma sp. parasitando pragas nas plantações de eucalipto, soja, cana-de-açúcar, milho, tomate entre outras culturas agrícolas. Considerando os benefícios, a redução dos impactos ambientais, aumento da segurança alimentar, menor exposição dos trabalhadores rurais a substâncias tóxicas, o controle biológico aplicado torna-se uma prática comum em nosso meio rural, tornando a agricultura mais sustentável.

The migration rate of esterases and their substrate specificity for 4-methylumbelliferyl esters (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) and alpha- and beta-naphthyl esters were analyzed in Diatraea saccharalis by starch gel electrophoresis. Substrate preference of esterases was observed with Est-2 and Est-8 isozymes showing substrate specificity for 4-methylumbelliferyl esters and Est-4 isozyme showing specificity for 4-methylumbelliferyl butyrate and alpha-naphthyl butyrate. Allele variation was detected at the Est-3 locus. Two alleles, Est-3F and Est-3S, were identified in pupae with fluorogenic and ester-naphthyl substrates. Chi-square analysis showed no differences between the observed genotypic frequencies and those expected on the basis of Hardy-Weinberg frequencies for the Est-3 locus (chi² = 2.4; p < 0.01). The negative value for the Wright's fixation index (F = -0.2096) calculated for the D. saccharalis population maintained under laboratory conditions indicates an excess of heterozygotes, however, the observed Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium indicates that in the laboratory the population of D. saccharalis behaved as if the moth were randomly mating in nature. The high level of heterozygosity at the Est-3 locus indicates also that this esterase may be a good genetic marker for studies of natural D. saccharalis populations.

Cotesia flavipes parasitizes Diatraea saccharalis, a pest that causes major losses to sugarcane production. The mass production of C. flavipes and its subsequent release onto sugarcane is one form of biological control of D. saccharalis. An essential factor for successfully fighting this pest is the development of host diets that can increase the efficiency of C. flavipes production. Palm oil contains saturated fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated linoleic acid. However, little is known about the effects of palm oil on C. flavipes production in the laboratory. Different concentrations of palm oil were added to the D. saccharalis diet and its nutritional indices were analyzed. Subsequently, the production and sex ratio of C. flavipes were determined. Our results indicated that the addition of higher palm oil concentrations to an artificial diet generated a high relative consumption rate (RCR) in D. saccharalis, and consequently a high relative metabolic rate (RMR), which resulted in a lower production of the parasitoid. In contrast, the lowest palm oil concentration in the artificial diet generated a low RMR and resulted in high-efficiency conversion of ingested food (ECI), enabling D. saccharalis to yield more C. flavipes. This suggests that palm oil influences the quantity of D. saccharalis ingested, which determines the number of C. flavipes that will be generated. In this study, supplementation of a D. saccharalis diet with 0.25% palm oil increased the production of C. flavipes. Therefore, this level of palm oil supplementation can aid in the production of C. flavipes on a laboratory-scale. Further research, including increasing the number of parasitoids, must be performed to mass-produce the augmentative releases of C. flavipes to manage D. saccharalis.

Fertilizers and chemical pesticides supply plants’ nutritional requirements and protect them against pathogens. However, they may cause harm to the environment. Pectobacterium sp. has been reported as an endophyte with the capacity of a plant-growth promoter, especially in the control of phytopathogens. The current paper evaluates the capacity of the endophytic bacterium Pectobacterium sp. MG-60 isolated from Mikania glomerata Spreng. (Asteraceae) to antagonize phytopathogens in vitro, produce IAA, and fix nitrogen (nifH). Growth promotion assessments of bean and soybean plants under greenhouse conditions were also performed. The rate of antagonism against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum was 52.5%. The endophyte Pectobacterium sp. MG-60 produced 3.54 µg mL-1 of IAA when 5 mM L-tryptophan in the culture medium was used. Under greenhouse conditions, significant results for Pectobacterium sp. MG-60 in the growth of soybean and common bean plants were observed, especially in the height of common bean (19%) and soybean (20%), fresh weight of shoot (18.5%) and fresh weight of roots (46.8 %) of soybean plants. This is the first report on Pectobacterium isolated as an endophyte from M. glomerata with plant growth-promoting agent abilities with biotechnological potential for the agricultural field.

ResumoNos insetos, o corpo gorduroso pode ser considerado um centro de metabolismo intermediário e também o local de síntese de alguns componentes da hemolinfa. Com objetivo de obter maiores informações sobre essa estrutura, foi realizado um estudo para a sua caracterização morfológica em adultos de Hedypathes betulinus Klug. Os resultados mostram que a estrutura ocorre em duas porções, a primeira, aderida ao trato digestivo e a segunda, associada ao tegumento, denominando-se, corpo gorduroso perivisceral e parietal, respectivamente. Histologicamente o corpo gorduroso apresenta dois tipos celulares, os trofócitos e os enócitos. Os trofócitos apresentam na área citoplasmática, vacúolos, núcleos esféricos, cromatina granular com variações na condensação, e em alguns casos, foram observados núcleos deslocados para a periferia celular. A presença de nucléolos múltiplos em algumas células sugere alta atividade nuclear. Os enócitos foram observados associados aos trofócitos, com núcleos centrais de formato esférico e cromatina de aspecto granular dispersa; os nucléolos apresentaram-se proeminentes em número variável e diferem dos trofócitos pela ausência de vacúolos, citoplasma granular, formato e tamanho das células.AbstractIn insects, the fat body may be considered a center of intermediary metabolism and also the site of synthesis of some components of the hemolymph. Aiming to obtain more knowledge about this structure, a study for characterization of morphological Hedypathes betulinus Klug was carried out. The results show that it takes place in two parts: the first one is adhered to the digestive tract, and the second one, associated with the coat, called the fat body and parietal perivisceral, respectively. Histologically the fat body is composed of two cell types, the trophocytes and the oenocites. The trophocytes present, in its cytoplasmic, vacuoles, spherical nuclei, granular chromatin with variations in condensation, and in some cases, it was observed nuclei displaced to periphery cells. The presence of multiple nucleoli in some cells suggests high nuclear activity. The oenocites were observed associated with trophocytes with central nuclei of spherical shape and granular appearance, dispersed chromatin, the nucleoli were prominent in variable number and differ from trophocytes by the absence of vacuoles, cytoplasm granular, shape and size of cells.

A polinização é o principal processo de reprodução em plantas, e os insetos são um dos grupos mais atuantes nesse mecanismo. Nas orquídeas os membros da ordem Hymenoptera se destacam, entretanto dípteras, lepidopteras e coleopteras também exercem este papel. Com objetivo de identificar o agente polinizador mais frequente no Orquidário da Universidade Estadual de Maringá, efetuamos coletas quinzenais, durante os meses de agosto de 2012 até Junho de 2013, no período vespertino entre 14h00 e 18h00, totalizando 22 coletas. Foram utilizadas armadilhas adesivas de coloração amarela e azul, coletas manuais com pinça e aspirador na superfície das plantas, puçá na parte aérea, bandejas com colorações atrativas (azul, amarelo e roxo) e garrafas plásticas contendo iscas orgânicas. Os insetos coletados permaneceram em álcool 70% e foram transportados até o Laboratório de Controle Biológico, Morfologia e Citogenética de Insetos/DBC/UEM, para posterior identificação. A entomofauna caracterizada através de acervos bibliográficos, registrou 7 (sete) ordens: Díptera (43,95%); Hemíptera (17,94%); Hymenoptera (17,94%); Dermaptera (12,82%); Coleoptera (4,39%); Lepidoptera (2,19%) e Homoptera (0,73%). Os dados obtidos sugerem que a polinização das plantas da família orchidaceae foram realizadas por dípteras.

Os insetos da família Calliphoridae (mosca-varejeira) apresentam hábitos necrófagos em sua fase imatura, portanto são objetos de estudos da área forense, pelo fato de serem os primeiros colonizadores da matéria em decomposição. A entomologia forense utiliza dados biológicos e ecológicos de insetos necrófagos com o objetivo de auxiliar nas investigações criminais, na estimativa do intervalo pós-morte (IPM) ou na descoberta da causa da morte. Estes insetos podem ser atraídos por substâncias em processo de fermentação, decomposição, sangue e feridas. Devido a estas características, os dípteros califorídeos possuem grande importância ecológica, veterinária e médico- sanitária, além de indicadores forenses. Portanto o objetivo deste trabalho foi coletar e identificar as espécies de califorídeos de interesse médico-legal na região de Maringá/ PR. Os espécimes foram coletados utilizando-se armadilhas confeccionadas por meio de garrafa PET 2L, contendo carne bovina moída como isca. Durante o período de Agosto de 2013 a Junho de 2014 foram coletadas e identificadas três espécies da família Calliphoridae: Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedmann 1819), Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius 1794), Lucilia cuprina (Wiedmann 1830). A espécie que apresentou maior frequência nas coletas foi Chrysomya megacephala, totalizando 126 espécimes (56,25%).
