Aims: Our primary aim was to establish the proportion of female orthopaedic consultants who perform arthroplasty via cases submitted to the National Joint Registry (NJR), which covers England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and Guernsey. Secondary aims included comparing time since specialist registration, private practice participation, and number of hospitals worked in between male and female surgeons. Methods: Publicly available data from the NJR was extracted on the types of arthroplasty performed by each surgeon, and the number of procedures of each type undertaken. Each surgeon was cross-referenced with the General Medical Council (GMC) website, using GMC number to extract surgeon demographic data. These included sex, region of practice, and dates of full and specialist registration. Results: Of 2,895 surgeons contributing to the NJR in 2023, 102 (4%) were female. The highest proportions of female surgeons were among those who performed elbow (n = 25; 5%), shoulder (n = 24; 4%), and ankle (n = 8; 4%) arthroplasty. Hip (n = 66; 3%) and knee arthroplasty (n = 39; 2%) had the lowest female representation. Female surgeons had been practising for a median of 10.4 years since specialist registration compared to 13.7 years for males (p < 0.001). Northern Ireland was the region with the highest proportion of female arthroplasty surgeons (8%). A greater proportion of male surgeons worked in private practice (63% vs 24%; p < 0.001) and in multiple hospitals (74% vs 40%; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Only 4% of surgeons currently contributing cases to the NJR are female, with the highest proportion performing elbow arthroplasty (5%). Female orthopaedic surgeons in the NJR are earlier in their careers than male surgeons, and are less involved in private practice. Introduction. Gender inequality in the workplace is not a new phenomenon, yet gender differences in working conditions and womenʼs involvement in the workplace are poorly understood. Women are often discriminated against in the workplace and their working conditions and wages are substandard. On their own, they are not always able to improve their working and social life and achieve better protection at work. This study aims to explore the working conditions and risks faced by migrant women working in one of the oldest and largest STM textile factories in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Materials and Methods. The purposive sample consisted of 240 migrant women from the STM textile factory. They were interviewed in four work colonies and outer residential areas through a series of interviews. The study utilizes mixed methods ‒ quantitative and qualitative. Observation, interview series were used to quantify the data and provide detailed qualitative information. Results. It was found that there were cases of injuries at work reported by the migrant women workers at CTM. Only in a few of the serious cases employees were monetarily compensated. Not all employees are provided with the essential protection kits for dealing with the hazardous chemicals and toxins therefore poor health, ailments and sores, fatigue, cramps were majorly reported by the respondents. Discrimination on the basis of gender, conditions of harassment, physical violence and other workplace hazards to mental, emotional, and physical health were reported by the migrant women workers. Discussion and Conclusion. The authors concluded that migrant women continue to work in hazardous conditions, putting their health at risk and becoming victims of exploitation. The findings underscore the need for inclusive policies and interventions, as well as a reassessment of existing labour practices, to address issues that contribute to the vulnerability of migrant workers. The article's contributions will be useful to regional authorities, labour and women's rights advocates who are interested in addressing the specific challenges of this vulnerable group. This empirical study may benefit scholars interested in the topics of gender, migration, and working conditions.

The publication focuses on a range of human rights issues, reviewing recent developments in areas such as non-discrimination, violence, family law, healthcare, LGBT rights, asylum, and employment. The authors of the Report find that access to certain spaces based on gender categories (such as gender discrimination in the sports field) is a topic that often turns into hostile public debates. Those aspects with a specific impact on trans people and their rights, inclusive national programs, sex education programs, and the criminalisation of sex work are reviewed. Examples of best practices and policies in the area of ensuring expression and gender identity are also tackled.

AbstractThis article examines four popular Nepali fairy tales—’The Story of Sumnima’, ‘Sunkeshari Maiya’, ‘Raja Mansarko Katha’, and ‘Hai Rani Chandani’, collected from different written sources—and demonstrates how they perpetuate gender stereotypes and limit women to inferior roles and negative conduct. The study is a critical discourse analysis with a special focus on gender relations among characters. It derives its theoretical lens from feminist theorists like Simone de Beauvoir, Helene Cixous and Cora Kaplan, and gender theorists like Judith Butler. Either origin myths or social and familial tales analyzed in this article relegate the female characters to a stock of voiceless individuals without agency, and limit them to minor domestic chores, or portray them as wicked agents that cause tragedies to their close associates, families, or members of the society. The tales reproduce misogynist baggage and represent a social psychology shaped by patriarchal tradition. The study concludes that characterization in these tales is informed by the value system of the patriarchal society where these tales exist and thus recapitulate gender bias.

This paper systematizes theoretical concepts, which explain the role of higher education in the formation of the gender inequality in the labour market as well as empirical studies, which consider the formation of the gender wage inequality in all the stages of the interaction between individual and educational system (enrolment, studying and graduation). Theoretical part considers the impact of education on gender inequality through the lenses of human capital theory, compensating wage differentials, theories of discrimination and segregation, as well as through gender-oriented approach in education. The study also presents current trends in gender inequality in education and labour market in Russia. Additionally, we systematize international experience in policy measures related to smoothing of the gender inequality in education and the labour market and we propose measures which can be applicable for that purpose in Russia.

Based on a sample of 34,834 heterosexual couples living in Brazilian metropolitan regions, we verify econometrically the existence of a gender differential in the time spent commuting to work and the role of the division of domestic tasks. We use PNAD data for the period 2011-2015 and estimate Multivariate Ordered Probit models to calculate the probability of an individual choosing a determined commuting time interval. The results indicate that women exhibit shorter commuting times than men. This does not change when we add variables representing socioeconomic characteristics, relative income (typically lower for women), different types of work, age, and the property of the residence. We include the amount of time dedicated to household chores, the division of household responsibilities, and the contribution to the couple’s income (bargaining power). The results indicate that the difference in commuting times between men and women has little to do with gender per se but is strongly related to the social roles represented in the family. The shares of chores and income are always important in defining the commuting time of individuals. Simultaneous equation estimates for the two members of the couples indicate that the effect of the share of household chores on commuting time is more intense for men than for women, which is probably the result of the normative asymmetric division of gender in the responsibility for the home.

This research examines gender-related language patterns and discourse markers in Pakistani drama serials, focusing on the lexical choices made by male and female authors. Drawing on Lakoff's model, we conduct qualitative content analysis on the selected episodes to uncover gender dynamics and power imbalances. Results show that men use words like "absolutely", "decide", "go", "listen", and "stop" along with self-referential pronouns "I" and "he" more frequently. Women employ words like "doubt", "maybe", "very", "excuse me", "wonder", "we", and "might", as well as pronouns "she", and "we" more often. These findings reveal gender stereotypes in Pakistani drama serials, underscoring the need for more diverse and inclusive narratives challenging traditional roles. This research impacts the broader media landscape, emphasizing media's role in shaping societal perceptions and the importance of promoting gender equality in representations. Moreover, by analyzing the corpus of Pakistani drama serials authored by both genders, our methodology employs qualitative content analysis, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive media environment by dissecting gender-related language patterns and discourse markers in these serials.

In light of growing research on online misogyny and sexism, this study investigates the online discrimination faced by the first woman president of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, who served from 2015 to 2020. Specifically, it examines the Facebook communication of the three leading Croatian news sites, as well as related readers’ comments, pertaining to two events that got excessive media coverage: Grabar-Kitarović’s appearance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and an educational video of the President reading Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking to Croatian children in Sweden. In both cases, Grabar-Kitarović ventured beyond the safety of political discourse and entered what is often seen as a »slippery« territory for women politicians - a space of emotions and celebrity politics. An analysis of the media content established that the analyzed media outlets resorted to ridicule, sexism, and insults to report about Grabar-Kitarović on both occasions. A content analysis of related readers’ comments showed that she was the target of sexist discrimination and aggressive, even violent insults. However, discrimination was overall less present in the readers’ comments than in the media texts. Readers were generally less critical and more appreciative towards Grabar-Kitarović’s display of spontaneity and emotions than the media. This suggests that the informal setting of social media discussions may provide a less hostile environment for women to display their femininity, emotions and private persona compared to traditional media.

Background: Adolescence is a unique phase of life, facilitates the transition of a child to an adult, and thus is characterized with distinctive challenges as well as potentialities. Gender socialization during adolescence is shaped by the family, culture, and social construct results to development of attitudes, with more consistent and organized vision toward self and the society. Aim: The present study aims to identify the gender attitudes, perceived gender role, and gender discrimination among adolescents. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive design adopted to study the gender perceptions among adolescents (N = 200) between 8th and 12th standards and meeting the inclusive criteria. Data were collected on gender attributes, attitudes, and perceived discrimination based on gender. Gender equality scores measured among students were categorized between high and low. Results: Findings reveal the persistence of gendered attitudes, roles, and relationships based on gender; 54% girls and 58% boys reported that boys/men are expected to be tough and less emotional and (37.5% girls; 46% boys) agreed that men were decision makers in the financial and family matters and women were felt as lesser role players. Overall, 46% were with gender-biased perceptions. Girls (18%) and boys (5%) reported sexual abuse; however, for any gender abuse, only 16% preferred to seek help from the family members. Conclusion: Findings of the present study highlight the need for gender sensitization in education and schools to transform gender-balanced attitudes and behaviors from young age which greatly affect the inter-personal relationships, affecting behaviors and relationships in families and societies in adulthood.

This article presents the theoretical framework and the results of a research conducted in a brewery with respect to the concept of gender discrimination. The main objective of the research is to identify gender inequalities and to describe organisational practices that reflect occupational segregation. The study shows that although there are equal opportunities on the labour market between women and men, there are differences in compensation and options for advancement at work, because women tend to give grater attention, time and effort to family and children than men.

The article presents the results of a survey conducted within the framework of the European project FREASCO, Free from sexism and sexual harassment at school (EU Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme) which involved seven research institutes located in four European countries (Italy, Estonia, France and Greece) and of which the Department of Education, Languages, Interculture, Literature and Psychology of the University of Florence is the lead partner. The project aimed to facilitate the early detection and reporting of incidents of discrimination (such as sexism and sexual harassment) that may occur within school and university contexts. In this paper, we focus on the results of the exploratory research conducted through focus groups with researchers, teaching and technical-administrative staff, scholarship holders, research fellows and PhD students from three Italian universities who were involved in capacity building activities.

BackgroundSport has the well-known power of improving body awareness, self-esteem, and social interaction, thus promoting quality of life and psychophysical wellbeing. Specifically referring to adapted disciplines, habitual practice often becomes an effective integration and self-efficacy booster. Among disabilities, visual impairment deeply alters body image perception, autonomy, and environmental/social interaction heavily reducing sport or leisure involvement opportunities. In particular, visually impaired women represent one of the most vulnerable categories to gender and disability discrimination. Moreover, even when congenitally sightless, they perceive social pressure of mainstream beauty ideals, mostly spread by media, comparable to their sighted peers. On these premises and the previously demonstrated psychophysical benefits of Italian blind baseball practice on this target population, the present study aimed to deepen the social and educative potentialities of such adapted sport applying a more sociological research approach.MethodsThe “red diamonds” event, namely, the first ever female blind baseball match, was the setting for the administration of our structured online survey. In detail, our survey comprised different evaluation tools such as the 18-item Psychological Well-Being Scale, the 12-item Short Form questionnaire, the Dresden Body Image questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and sociological model designed questions. Quality of life, psychological wellbeing, self-esteem, body image, and perceived female sport psychological violence were investigated in the whole women sample (n = 33) voluntarily adhering to the game.ResultsSurvey results revealed no statistically significant differences between visually impaired players (n = 13; mean age: 32.84 ± 12.05 years) and sighted on-field subjects (i.e., coaches, assistants, and referees; n = 20; mean age: 47.15 ± 12.31 years) in almost all the inquired variables, thus remarking the social and functional benefits of adapted sport through the “dual embodiment” and empowerment phenomenon.ConclusionsGiven that the event was inspired by and performed on the World Day against women violence, our study deepened not only the topic of disability discrimination but also the currently alarming gender-related one. In such a context, the present research might provide interesting cues for further investigations on disability and gender disparities in sports, hence spreading interest in this under-investigated field. In perspective, the “red diamonds” experience could also contribute to inspiring and progressively developing educative tools against any kind of discrimination by promoting integration and social growth through regular sports practice.

The presentation of sleep disorders varies widely among women and men, and sleep disorders among women are frequently subject to under- and delayed diagnosis. Insomnia is a complex sleep disorder with a multifactorial etiology, and women face many sex-specific sleep health challenges that may contribute to and influence the presence of insomnia symptoms across their lifespan. These include sex differences in neurobiology, hormonal variation during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, increased prevalence of mood disorders, increased vulnerability to adverse socioeconomic factors, and gender discrimination, among other psychosocial stressors, particularly among women of racial-ethnic minority. As the medical community continues to recognize the significance of sleep as a vital pillar of overall wellbeing, the integration of sex-specific considerations in research, diagnosis, and treatment strategies is essential to optimizing sleep health for women.

This article deals with the problem of discrimination against foreigners in Japan. Discrimination against foreigners is historically conditioned by the ethnic nationalism characteristic of the Japanese, the manifestations of which are widespread nowadays. This is confirmed by the fact that Japan is one of the few developed countries without national legislation prohibiting racial discrimination. Foreigners remain on the margins of social life in Japan because existing policies do not allow them to make the transition from temporary migrants to a recognized, integrated minority. This unfriendly attitude of the Japanese toward foreigners cannot be acceptable in the context of Japan's level of socio-economic development. Therefore, it is important to draw attention to the problem of racial discrimination by all means and to counteract this phenomenon in every way possible. To this end, a study was conducted to identify the main forms of discrimination against foreigners in Japan. According to the study, all the foreigners surveyed had experienced discrimination to some degree or another in Japan. The most common forms of discrimination against foreigners include housing discrimination, employment discrimination, age discrimination, ethnic discrimination, and race discrimination. Specific examples of discrimination against foreigners include being placed in poor housing, being forced to work in harsh working conditions, and being forced to change their natural appearance. At the same time, foreign respondents are practically unable to resist discrimination against them, which is akin to the phenomenon of trained helplessness. Foreigners very rarely engage in conflicts in Japanese society, understanding the futility of their actions. The high level of discrimination against foreigners and the higher prevalence of discriminatory behavior compared to other countries suggests that urgent national and local measures should be taken in Japan to reduce the forms and intensity of this discrimination, in particular, as a matter of priority, a law to protect immigrants' rights and to simplify the procedure for legal immigration into the country.

Research objectives: to investigate the problems of gender and age discrimination in the modern discourse on the protection of children’s reproductive health, to analyze the most important issues including the concept of child reproductive health, normative guarantees in the field of children’s reproductive health, protection of reproductive children’s health in the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, social obstacles to the proper realization of children’s reproductive rights, etc. Materials and methods. A survey was based on the author’s developed questionnaires in order to find out the level of reproductive health and sexual violence among children. The focus group was formed by 540 children: 288 girls and 252 boys aged 15–18 living in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions. The research period covered the years 2021–2023. The error of the obtained results, taking into account the number of respondents, was 2–3.5%. The questionnaires are designed for anonymous and quick filling. Results. Today’s problems and challenges of an environmental, pandemic, and military nature are partially offset by rapid and continuous improvements in social and economic conditions, along with changes in demographics, lifestyles, the environment, and innovations in medical and therapeutic technologies. In general, there is sufficient number of normative protection guarantees that exist at the normative level. However, the problem is manifested in the fact that declarative norms are often ineffective, as they do not entail real guarantees of an organizational and institutional nature regarding the protection and protection of children’s medical rights. Despite the special needs and vulnerabilities that children face, most services are not organized to recognize or meet these needs. Conclusions. It is substantiated that the family is the most important institution in the socialization of a child, and its life experience plays an important role in ensuring that the child is a healthy individual in the broad sense of this concept, which includes physical and psychological criteria. It has been established that characteristics and relationships in the family, especially in the preschool period (the most critical process of children’s development) can positively or negatively affect the structure of the child’s personality. Sudden changes and extraordinary events experienced by the family in the process of adaptation to social changes can cause the family to experience a crisis situation.

With the demographic dividend disappearing, the key to achieving high-quality development in China is to promote full employment of the workforce. Women are a significant group in the job market, but they frequently face greater pressure and higher employment thresholds. Ensuring high-quality employment for women will be one of the most important tasks in the future. Based on the China Family Panel Studies data, this paper uses two-way fixed effects models, causal stepwise regression analysis, and structural equation models to study the impact of digital transformation of households on female employment and how it works. The empirical results show that digital transformation of households significantly promotes female employment. For low-security employment and high-security employment, the promotion effect of digital transformation is significant. Further mechanism analysis shows that digital transformation of households mainly increases women’s human capital, improves their search for information, and stimulates improvements in social skills, thus effectively eliminating employment-related gender discrimination and ultimately promoting women’s employment. This paper can provide a significant reference for alleviating female employment pressure, promoting full employment, and achieving high-quality development in the context of digital transformation.

The change in the education system of the Reza Shah’s era under the discourse of the modern national government and as a result the growth and expansion of women's education with the aim of educating new Iranian women and mothers led to significant employment of women in the education system, especially as teachers. Valuable research has been conducted on the necessity of women's education, the development, of literacy, the development of girls' schools and teacher education during the time of Reza Shah, but less attention has been paid to the employment status of women teachers and the challenges they faced during this period. The main topic of this article is the employment status of female teachers during the era of Reza Shah. The answer to this question emerges from the quantitative and qualitative study of the training of female teachers, the increase and decrease of their numbers in schools, the employment conditions, their limitations and difficulties, the status of their rights, as well as gender differences and discrimination in this profession, relying on documents and some publications. This period has taken place.​ The findings of the research are based on the analysis of statistics and tables and show that the education of women was less important compared to men. This problem presents girls' schools and female teachers with the constant problem of lack of funds, low wages and gender discrimination in employment law. People's poverty and lack of financial ability to pay the small tuition fees of girls' national schools, especially in the states, and as a result, low salaries and a lot of work, along with the combination of employment outside the home with women's responsibilities at home, were other problems of female teachers, which sometimes led to their resignation.

A large number of Bangladeshi women journalists are facing gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. This is one of the contributing factors in excluding women journalists’ voices from the public sphere. Drawing on the feminist approach of structure and agency theory, the study investigated the causes and consequences of workplace gender discrimination and sexual harassment. A mixed method of survey and in-depth interviewing were conducted, and the data were thematically analyzed. The findings outlined gender discrimination and harassment are evident in the media industries of Bangladesh, commonly maneuvered by both internal and external perpetrators. The situation causes frustration among women journalists. As a coping-up endeavor, they often remain silent due to their lack of trust in protection mechanisms e.g., sexual harassment prevention committee in workplace, and sometimes they withdraw from their responsibilities.

According to the Egyptian legal framework, a man is considered to have committed infidelity if he had sexual intercourse with another woman other than his wedded wife and such intercourse must take place within the marital home that he shares with his wife. If a man has sexual intercourse with an unmarried maiden in a hotel, that would not be regarded as an act of adultery. On the contrary, a woman does not enjoy the same privilege as her male counterparts. If a married woman sleeps with another man other than her wedded husband, she will be regarded as the one who committed adultery whether she did it in her marital home or outside it. What is good for the goose must also be good for the gander. An egalitarian society for all is not only a fundamental human right but an essential foundation for a prosperous, peaceful, and sustainable society. This paper intends to contribute to mounting pressure on the Egyptian government to revisit its discriminatory laws and to comply with its international human rights obligations.

ÖZ: Yapılan bu çalışmada, temel olarak 21. yüzyılda ABD, Avrupa, Asya ülkeleri ile Türkiye’de yönetim kademelerinde yer alan kadınların karşılaştıkları cinsiyet ayrımcılığı sorunlarının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Birinci kısımda, cinsiyet ayrımcılığının ülkelerdeki mevcut durumuna yönelik literatür bulguları özetlenmiştir. İkinci kısımda, Türkiye’de kamu yönetimi ve özel sektörde kadın yöneticilerin karşılaştıkları sorunlar ve çözüm önerilerine yönelik bilgiler verilmiştir. Cinsiyet ayrımcılığı araştırmalarının çoğu, cinsiyet ayrımcılığının tek yönüne odaklanmasına rağmen çalışmada değişik ülkelere ait mobbing, fiziksel taciz, kariyer gelişimi olumsuzlukları ve ücret farklılıkları gibi çeşitli temel konulara değinilmiştir. Konu, hem kadın çalışanlar hem de kadın yöneticiler açısından ele alınmıştır. Diğer yandan farklı ülkelerde, içinde bulunduğumuz yüzyılda cinsiyet ayrımcılığına nasıl bakıldığı, bunlara ait çalışmaların bulgularının neler olabileceği, konunun evrensel bir bütünlük içinde dikkate alınmasının neden önemli olduğu sorularına da cevap aranmıştır. Çünkü farklı ülkeler ve kültürlerde çalışan ve yöneticilik yapan kadınların sorunlarının aynı olduğuna yönelik tespitler ve bunların toplumlarda çözüme yönelik karşılığının neler olduğu da inceleme konuları arasındadır. ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this study is to examine the gender discrimination problems faced by women at management levels in the US, Europe, Asia and Turkey in the 21st century. In the first part, the literature findings on the current situation of gender discrimination in countries were summarized. In the second part, data related to the problems faced by women managers in the public administration and private sector in Turkey and relevant solution suggestions were given. Although most of the gender discrimination studies focus on a single aspect of gender discrimination, various fundamental issues such as mobbing, physical harassment, career development constraints and wage differences in different countries were mentioned in the study. The topic has been discussed in terms of both female employees and managers. On the other hand, answers were sought to the questions of how gender discrimination is viewed in different countries in 21st century, what the findings of the studies related to these might be, and why it is important to consider these issues in a universal integrity. Because in different countries and cultures, the fact that the problems faced by women employees and managers are similar and what their solution-oriented counterparts are in the societies were also among the topics of analysis.

The paper examines the limits of state interference in proscribing cultural norms by considering gender discrimination, right of people to leave their community free of penalties, denying women appropriate education, and forced or arranged marriages for girls and young women. The discussion opens by reflecting on the discriminatory practices of the Pueblo tribes against their women and analysing an American court case, Santa Clara v. Martinez. It is argued that the severity of rights violations within the minority group, the insufficient dispute-resolution-mechanisms, and the inability of individuals to leave the community if they so desire without penalty justify state intervention to uphold the dissenters’ basic rights. Next, a Canadian case, Hofer v. Hofer, illustrates the problematics of denying reasonable exit right to members who may wish to leave their community. Subsequently, the discussion turns to the issue of arranged and forced marriages of girls and young women. While the latter is coercive the former is not. While forced marriages should be denounced as unjust, arranged marriages can be accepted. Finally, the paper considers denying education to women, arguing that such a denial is unjust and discriminatory.

AbstractThe aim was to study discrimination, with a focus on gender and sexual harassment among medical students at Uppsala University in Sweden. A survey was sent via email to all registered medical students in the spring semester of 2020. Data were compared with two previous studies. Questions about gender and sexual harassment were the same as in the study conducted in 2002 and 2013. In addition, the 2020 survey included a question about other grounds of discrimination. Forty percent, that is, 453 out of 1,130 medical students, participated. The proportion of students reporting gender-based discrimination during the preclinical semesters was similar for females and males. During the clinical semesters, significantly more females than males reported gender discrimination (41% vs. 21.5%, p = 0.005) and sexual harassment (22% vs. 5%, p = 0.001). Physicians were the most commonly reported perpetrator. Reports about not being respected had increased from 2% to 20% between 2013 and 2020 among female clinical students. The prevalence of those who experienced several sexually harassing behaviors increased for the female and male clinical students and the female preclinical students. Receiving an unwelcome touch increased from 1% to 7% for the female clinical students. Discrimination due to ethnicity was reported by 36% of the students born in a country other than Sweden compared to 3% of those born in Sweden. Our findings confirm that experiences of different forms of discrimination exist in this medical school, and females and minorities are particularly affected.

The study investigated undergraduate students’ perceptions of gender equality, their practices and perceived strategies to promote gender equality in Afghanistan. It also examined the impact of the participants’ gender on their responses. The authors used an online questionnaire to collect data from 448 students using snowball sampling technique. They used descriptive and inferential statistics to analyze the data. The findings showed that the majority of the participants had favorable perceptions about gender equality, and an overwhelming majority disagreed with the traditional notion of “women belong in the kitchen and men belong at the office”. They used various practices to varying extent to promote gender equality in their communities (e.g. advocacy for gender equality). They suggested a number of strategies to promote gender equality in Afghanistan (e.g. integration of gender equality in education). Furthermore, the participants’ gender had a significant impact on their perceptions of gender equality. Female students had stronger perceptions about gender equality than their male counterparts did; they used a number of practices more frequently than males to promote gender equality. Compared to their male counterparts, female students were also more aware of roles of men, mullahs, education and awareness programs in promotion of gender equality in society.

Given that female auditors’ representation in the audit market has averagely caught up to that of males, yet remains insufficient at the partner level, it is imperative to investigate gender discrimination in public accounting firms. Using data from the Chinese audit market, this paper analyzes the glass ceiling phenomenon faced by females as they aspire to promotion to partner positions. It also explores the professional barriers that may impede their career progression post-promotion. The findings illuminate that the opportunities for female promotion to partner positions are notably lower than for males. Furthermore, after their elevation to partner roles, females are more likely to be allocated to clients grappling with financial distress and high-risk situations. In contrast, opportunities to engage with auditing important clients are diminished, particularly within male-dominated audit firms. Additionally, the study reveals that female promotion to partner positions heightens their prospects for assuming the lead auditor role in audit projects. However, this phenomenon predominantly materializes within audit firms characterized by a higher proportion of female auditors. Instead, females face more significant challenges in garnering recognition within male-dominated audit firms. Lastly, the research examines investor reactions to female promotion to partner, revealing a generally negative response. In summary, this study contributes to a comprehensive exploration of gender discrimination within the public accounting firms, shedding light on women’s career development challenges after breaking the glass ceiling.

Sexism in textbooks can have terrible repercussions and a variety of detrimental effects on students. Leaning toward one sex can reinforce sexual stereotypes, which is why many researchers have been scouring books to look for any indication of gender favoritism. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the degree of gender bias in the Project series, a popular EFL textbook, and the Iranian EFL textbooks (Prospect series). It was investigated whether education in English-language textbooks was devoid of any form of discrimination or whether it took a systematic approach to a particular gender. The student books from the two series were carefully examined for any indications of preference for one gender. The quantity and gender of the staff members involved in the various stages of the creation of these series were verified. In the end, the frequency of all visual and textual items related to gender was checked and counted in light of content analysis. The results of this study demonstrated that gender bias was a problem in both series of books, but it was much more evident in Iranian textbooks. As in the previous generation's books, sex inequality was still present in the Prospect series, and it was clear that more thought needed to be given to this issue. In addition to some suggestions for resolving this problem, the study's conclusion also had some implications for those in charge of developing instructional materials, educating teachers, and formulating policies.

Background: Violence against children (VAC) is a global epidemic rooted in gender norms. One of the most common forms of VAC is school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV). Research has shown the promise of social media to shift norms underlying abusive behaviors, but, to-date, no studies have reported on social media norms-shifting interventions to prevent SRGBV by teachers. This study describes lessons learned from a pilot social-media intervention to shift social norms among Ugandan teachers to promote gender equity and reduce SRGBV. Methods: We extracted information on group size, posts, engagements, and teachers’ comments from intervention Facebook and WhatsApp social media groups and conducted mixed-methods data analysis. The study and program team met weekly to review findings and adjust the approach. Results: We found many teachers voiced social norms and attitudes upholding SRGBV in online groups, highlighting the need for intervention. Social media groups were largely acceptable to teachers, reached many teachers throughout Uganda, and often promoted active discussion. The program team carefully monitored online engagement, identified needed shifts, and performed mid-course adjustments in response to emerging challenges. Lessons learned included focusing on positive norms instead of harmful norms, engaging peer-influencers to shift norms, and including educational resources to inform behavior change. Conclusions: This study offers learnings on application of social and behavior-change communication and social norms principles to future online violence prevention initiatives.

This paper is the result of the Military Gender Studies project. The aim of the project is to analyze the dynamics of gender perspectives in some military institutions in Europe, namely the Military Academy, Lisbon, Portugal, the University of Turin, Italy, “Vasil Levski” National Military University, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria and “Nicolae Bălcescu” Land Forces Academy of Sibiu. The project started with the application of a questionnaire to military students and this paper will present part of the results obtained only in “Nicolae Bălcescu” Land Forces Academy of Sibiu, after analyzing the discrimination dimension.

Abstract Background Gender discrimination is any unequal treatment of a person based on their sex. Women and girls are most likely to experience the negative impact of gender discrimination. The aim of this study is to assess the factors that influence gender discrimination in Pakistan, and its impact on women’s life. Methods A mixed method approach was used in the study in which a systematic review was done in phase one to explore the themes on gender discrimination, and qualitative interviews were conducted in phase two to explore the perception of people regarding gender discrimination. The qualitative interviews (in-depth interviews and focus group discussions) were conducted from married men and women, adolescent boys and girls, Healthcare Professionals (HCPs), Lady Health Visitors (LHVs) and Community Midwives (CMWs). The qualitative interviews were analyzed both manually and electronically through QSR NVivo 10. The triangulation of data from the systematic review and qualitative interviews were done to explore the gender discrimination related issues in Pakistan. Results The six major themes have emerged from the systematic review and qualitative interviews. It includes (1) Status of a woman in the society (2) Gender inequality in health (3) Gender inequality in education (4) Gender inequality in employment (5) Gender biased social norms and cultural practices and (6) Micro and macro level recommendations. In addition, a woman is often viewed as a sexual object and dependent being who lacks self identity unless being married. Furthermore, women are restricted to household and child rearing responsibilities and are often neglected and forced to suppress self-expression. Likewise, men are viewed as dominant figures in lives of women who usually makes all family decisions. They are considered as financial providers and source of protection. Moreover, women face gender discrimination in many aspects of life including education and access to health care. Conclusion Gender discrimination is deeply rooted in the Pakistani society. To prevent gender discrimination, the entire society, especially women should be educated and gendered sensitized to improve the status of women in Pakistan.

Objectives: Violence against women is a global public health problem. Although there has been much research done on violence against women, there are few studies that provide the current scientific production. Methods: In this study, bibliometric analysis has been used to evaluate the 1984 documents from 1986 to 2020 based on the Scopus database. These documents were analyzed quantitatively by the Bibliometric R Package and the VOS viewer software. In addition, the 20 top-cited papers were analyzed qualitatively. Results: The research findings show that the United States is a leader in this field with the most highly cited articles and also the greatest number of publications followed by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and South Africa. A total of 1984 documents were collected from the Scopus database and were analyzed in the Bibliometric R Research Package and the VOSviewer software. The results demonstrated that the average citations per year for each document were 23.39% and the annual scientific production growth rate was 16.86%. The keywords analysis indicates that most articles focus on “sexual violence”, “sexual assault”, “intimate partner violence”, “violence against women”, “sexual abuse”, “domestic violence”, “child sexual abuse”, “prevention”, and “rape.” Sources such as the “Journal of Interpersonal Violence”, “Journal of Violence Against Woman”, “Journal of Violence and Victims”, “Psychology of Women Quarterly”, “Journal of Adolescent Health”, “Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology”, “American Journal of Public Health”, “Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology”, and “American Journal of Public Health”, and “The Lancet” are the top most productive in this field. Discussion: Examining the articles showed that the vast majority of women have experienced verbal, sexual, intimate partner violence, cyber harassment, and so on.

The paper focuses on the way human rights law has been incorporating notions of intersectionality through legal instruments as well as through human rights courts’ decisions. The overall goal is to expose the shortcomings of the current conception of intersectionality as it has been applied by the Inter-American Court, which, I argue, derive from a categorical understanding of group and identity-based rights transplanted from the notion of structural discrimination. The paper argues that approaching human rights violations by means of categorical reasoning is detrimental to intersectional interests, since it perpetuates the problem that intersectionality seeks to overcome in the first place, and suggests that cutting across categories is a potentially more fruitful pathway for the future of intersectionality in the legal field.

The prejudices that have traditionally been held against female delinquency and the numerical minority of women in the prison system have led to the invisibility of their needs and characteristics as well as to many situations of inequality while they are incarcerated. This study is aimed at exploring the gender discrimination perceived by women in Spanish prisons. To this end, a scale for perception of gender discrimination is applied to a sample of incarcerated women. Qualitative data from a questionnaire administered to prison professionals and field notes are also used. The results show that incarcerated women perceive the existence of several situations of discrimination related to socio-educational intervention and to the adaptation of prisons to their unique needs, especially for those housed in male prisons. Prison professionals hold similar views and express their concern about the feminization of activities. The study has implications for the prison system and policy makers, including the implementation of gender-responsive programming in women’s prisons, the development of periodic assessments of the experiences faced by incarcerated women, and the training of prison staff.

The Gezi Park protests in Istanbul (Türkiye) gained worldwide attention in 2013. Both men and women took part in the protests, which were heavily cracked down on by the government. The present study examined 273 Turkish women’s attitudes and motivations for taking part in the protests. The results show that the following variables had a significant impact on protest participation: lifestyle threats posed by religious values/norms and by the government; feelings of marginalization as a woman; political dissatisfaction; gender discrimination; and affiliations with feminism. Regarding the impact of attitudes on women’s political participation and discrimination, this study provides insights into the state of research on gender discrimination and feministic identity.

This article investigates the phenomenon of gender equality in employment in the BRICS countries where it is one of the factors hampering the economic development and basic human rights. The authors examine the international obligations of these states under the human rights treaties of the United Nations Organization (UNO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), compare the national anti-discriminatory norms with the international standards (ILO Conventions and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women) and evaluate the observations of the relevant international bodies recently adopted in respect of the BRICS states. In particular, the activities of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and the ILO Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations are reviewed. In the paragraphs that follow, the national legislation and case-laws are examined. Furthermore, the reasons for the persistent gender stereotypes in the labor market, as well as the general attitude toward women’s roles in society in each country are reviewed. The authors identify the obstacles to achieving true gender equality in the workplace and formulate recommendations for improving protections against discrimination of women in employment as well as ensuring equal access to employment and promotion.

This study highlights the organisational-level factors that become the reason for propagating hostile behaviours among female nurses. Freire’s theory of oppression has been used as an underpinning theory for developing the conceptual framework. This study empirically verifies the conceptual framework of the study that gender discrimination and lack of administrative support are the antecedents of person-related hostility, which is the reason for poor job performance in the healthcare sector. We applied a quantitative research approach, using questionnaires to collect data. Total of 707 survey forms were collected from female nurses working in public sector hospitals in four main cities of Pakistan. The software SPSS 20 and SmartPLS 3 were used for the final data analysis. All hypotheses regarding the direct and indirect relationship of variables were accepted. Gender discrimination and lack of administrative support were positively associated with person-related hostility. Moreover, person-related hostility also mediated the relationship between independent variables (gender discrimination, lack of administrative support) and dependent variable (poor job performance). Future research is directed to study person-related hostility among nursing staff of semi-urban areas and small towns with low literacy rates, considering other dependent variables like burnout, mental well-being, and mental health. HR strategies and policies for fair performance evaluation and timely promotions of nursing professionals are proposed in the study for building an overall healthy environment.

Technology is advancing at an exponential rate, and artificial intelligence has become a contentious issue of the day. A plethora of fields influencing human life has been impacted by artificial intelligence, whereas the development of artificial intelligence has opened Pandora’s box of legal concerns. Several international organizations, including the United Nations, have identified gender equality as an indispensable constituent of the protection of human rights. The voyage of gender equality has seen a long phase of struggle and persists. This paper aims to analyze, in what manner artificial intelligence is affecting gender equality, raising concerns on the issues regarding the role played by the United Nations in securing gender equality through conventions and resolutions, is artificial intelligence capable of posing a threat to gender equality and what measures can be implemented to secure gender equality about artificial intelligence.

Many Qur’anic exegetes, willingly or unwillingly, have suggested readings based on gender presuppositions against women, claiming their suffering from some negative human attributes such as lack of intellect, poor memory, and inability to record events. These readings were considerably popular until the beginning of the 14th/ 20th century. However, in the transition to the modern period and the rise of contemporary emerging questions, socio-cultural contexts have been provided to distance oneself from interpretive traditions and propound up-to-date readings of this verse. Taking a comparative approach, the present research thus attempts to study the different possibilities for the interpretation of the verse in question, focusing on three modern Qur’anic exegeses, namely al-Manār, al-Mīzān, and Min Waḥy al-Qurʾān. The problems of the formation of a woman image and the development of a gender approach in social advertising in Italy are studied. The relevance of the study is due to the high importance of social advertising in modern society and the increased interest in gender studies. The author considered examples of visual-graphic and visual-cinematic advertising. Examples of political manifestos and campaign posters are analyzed that precede the phenomenon of social advertising and are very close to it in their purpose. The results of the study make it possible to judge the late gender orientation of socially important messages. The following stages of representation of the female image in social advertising have been identified. From the middle of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century, the image of Tower Italy was used on posters. During the First and Second World Wars, the role of women in society was rethought, the image of a woman-inspirer, a woman-mother, a homemaker appeared on campaign posters. The selection of a woman as a direct addressee of socially significant messages occurs after the end of the Second World War, which reflects the progress in the development of women’s rights and freedoms and is simultaneously associated with the emergence of a gender approach in advertising. Since the second half of the 20th century, the traditional image of a woman-mother and a housewife has been used in social advertising, the thematic range of advertising addressed to a female audience has expanded significantly. Since the beginning of the 21st century, social advertising has paid great attention to the problem of domestic violence and discrimination against women, which is reflected in the videos and posters of public, charitable and commercial organizations.

Many sports distinguish between female and male disciplines. The key reason for such division stems from the physiological characteristics that might give men the advantage over women in specific sports disciplines. Various sex-verification procedures were introduced to ensure fair play, but these were invasive procedures resulting in social stigmatization, gender discrimination and psychological trauma for female athletes. Sex verification was also proven to be unsuitable in the case of deviations from the standard binary concept of gender (e.g., in the case of mutations). For those reasons, critical legal developments have been achieved in this complex field of law, medicine, and sports in recent years.

Introduction: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a multidimensional concept and is relatively neglected in both research and practice. Gender equality is a crucial measure of human rights for millions of women and girls around the world. Most postpartum researches have focused on physical complications. This study was conducted to analyze the impact of gender of the baby on the HRQoL of postpartum women at 6 weeks. Material and Methods: The study was conducted in a resettlement colony, Kalyanpuri, located in Delhi, India, with a sample size of 330 postpartum women. The data were collected in the 6th week of postpartum period using the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 Health Survey for HRQoL. Results: The findings showed that the birth of a male baby led to a significantly (P < 0.05) better mean HRQoL score than the birth of a female baby. The mean scores of general health, vitality, social functioning, and mental health domains were significantly less in the case of a female newborn child. Conclusion: The male dominance in the Indian society which leads to financial supremacy and coercion for continuation of family lineage was an important predictor of lower HRQoL of the women in the postpartum period. This demonstrates the need for risk factor for gender equity to and achieve universal health coverage.

This article aims to identify wage inequalities and the effect of gender discrim-ination in the acceleration (2004-2008) and economic deceleration phases (2011-2014) in Brazil. Based on the data from the PNAD, the counterfactual decompo-sition of income is performed, and the results show a reduction in the income gap between men and women between 2004 and 2014, however, the wage differences and discrimination against women persist and occur independently of the eco-nomic performance of the country. In the stage of economic acceleration, the wage divergence and discrimination against women increase; the wage conver-gence and reduction of discrimination against women are evidenced in the eco-nomic slowdown. Economic discrimination prevails among non-white workers in relation to the white ones, with a sharp reduction in skin color discrimination in the period of slowdown in economic growth in the country.

A premise of this article is that the existing gap between the advanced gender equality normative framework and the state of gender equality in real life has widened in times of crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The background theoretical-methodological framework is presented in the introduction. The first chapter presents progressive gender equality achievements in the normative and strategic international, European and national framework. The next chapter explains why all crises have been worsening gender (in)equality in real life and even within the scope of already achieved rights. The third chapter outlines the negative impacts of COVID-19 on gender equality and living conditions of women globally, in the EU and Serbia. The fourth chapter addresses how the COVID-19 pandemic could contribute to advancing gender equality. The conclusion sums up the main topics of analysis and considers challenges related to the pandemic's possible positive impacts on gender equality.

Despite the recent economic growth and gender equality improvement in educational attainment, important gender disparities remain in the Peruvian labour market. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the Peruvian gender wage gap evolution during 2007–2018 and identifies key elements that explain its patterns. First, the article shows that the raw wage gap showed an upward trend between 2007–2011, ranging from 6% to 12%, and remaining around that top bound ever since. Second, using Oaxaca‐Blinder decomposition we find that the unexplained wage gap has remained virtually unchanged at around 17% during the study period. Reductions in endowment differences between men and women coupled with a stagnant unexplained gap led to slightly larger raw wage gaps over time. Moreover, the stagnant unexplained gap suggests the presence of structural problems regarding social norms, gender stereotyping and potential discrimination that affects the wage gap. Third, we show that both at a national and regional level, gender wage gaps are larger within the lowest percentiles, and they mostly have a downward slope across the earnings distribution. Finally, after computing the raw and unexplained gap at the region‐year level, we show that smaller regional gender gaps are associated with (a) higher GDP, (b) lower levels of domestic physical violence against women, and (c) lower percentages of women as household heads.

Reza Shah's era is the beginning of the modern era and the creation of fundamental changes in the social sphere of Iran. The Women's Awareness Project in this period affected their social life in various ways, especially women of middle and upper-class in urban areas. The formation of a new education system and the extension of the right to education in new public schools to girls were among the government's gender policies that greatly affected the social and personal lives of urban women and girls. The author of the present article did not seek to study the educational policies of Reza Shah's government in the field of women, but while explaining the development of the new concept of motherhood, sought to answer the question of how this concept made women's education necessary and this education in terms of Quantitatively and qualitatively, how was the new mother idea influenced. Research data collected through statistical libraries based on statistics and publications show the new maternal idea and the need to change the traditional patterns of women, primarily by changing the definition of the female uterus from a biological organ to the location of the next generation. And in the next step, with the emergence of the idea of mother-coach, or the education of an educated housewife, the quantitative expansion of women's public education expanded. Of course, in terms of quality, the educational program for women in public schools shows that their education was very different from that of men and was developed with an ideological approach, with the aim of raising a new Iranian wife and mother; For this reason, it has not contributed much to professional life and the formation of an independent female identity.

Women face disproportionate challenges while undertaking coastal fieldwork. We draw on 18 responses that specifically raise fieldwork issues from an international survey about perceptions and experiences of gender inequality for those working in coastal sciences to discuss two common themes. These themes are barriers to fieldwork participation and challenges for women working in coastal field settings such as boats or working on beaches, including discrimination and sexual harassment. We suggest five priority behavioural and policy changes to improve the fieldwork experience for women in coastal sciences: (i) publicise field role models and trail blazers, (ii) improve opportunities and capacity for women to undertake fieldwork, (iii) establish field codes of conduct, (iv) acknowledge the challenges women face in the field and provide support where possible, and (v) foster an enjoyable and supportive fieldwork culture.

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the critical elements for female chefs in overcoming the glass ceiling in a relevant sector of the hospitality industry: haute cuisine. Design – It is based on an empirical study. We surveyed 202 cooks and chefs from France, the US and Spain. Methodology – The data were analysed using fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The fsQCA identifies patterns or combinations of causal conditions that lead to an outcome to evaluate the variety of conditions that produce high career expectations among female professional chefs. Approach – Although the status of women in the hospitality industry has received academic attention, there is still a gap in research on gender discrimination in haute cuisine, specifically regarding the factors that enable for women’s advancement to chef. Findings – Six variables were identified that impact female chefs’ career advancement (entrepreneurial attitude, mentoring, career expectations, workplace environment, skills learned on the job, and their perception of a glass ceiling). The results show that entrepreneurial attitude is a critical enabler for the career advancement of female chefs. This factor is moderated by incumbents’ skills acquired in the workplace, combined with adequate mentoring, which facilitates the absence of a harsh environment perception by female chefs. Originality of the research – The theoretical framework developed for this study contributes to the literature on female entrepreneurship in haute cuisine and its contribution to overcoming gender barriers to advancement in the sector.

Gender is a universal term used in the space of identification and where Gender discrimination is destined just for women because women are the only targeted victims of gender discrimination in a patriarchal society. In India, mostly women at a young age depending on their father, in the middle age-she depend on their husband, and in the older age-depends on their son. Women always depend on somebody for their livelihoods. Hence, independence in economical aspects is imperative for women’s development. The novel “The Dark Hold No Terror” elicits the sufferings of working woman who has become a puppet in a male chauvinistic society. Shashi Deshpande portrays her women characters as the victims of the male-oriented modern society. In this novel, Sarita (Saru) is the female protagonist who narrates the story of her tale. By the narration, one can know her parents, late brother Dhurva, her husband Manohar, and her old teacher Boozie. It gives out the reminiscences of the protagonist. She is futile of her state and decides not to dispute the domination by breaching her familial life.

Before the Great Recession, young single women in Jordan, like those in other Middle Eastern and North African countries with a strong Islamic cultural tradition, experienced important changes in social roles. In this paper, we claim that economic theory may help to understand some of these changing patterns. It is argued that liberalization in the Jordanian economy resulted in important changes in the Jordanian social contract regarding gender roles, school enrollment, labor participation, marriage, and fertility. In particular, three apparently disconnected contemporaneous developments may be interrelated: the increase in women's marriage age, the growth of young single women's participation in the labor market, and the increase in the young male unemployment rate. This process stopped in the late 2000s, both due to exogenous (the Great Recession after 2008 and the Syrian civil war in 2011) and endogenous (existing attitudes towards working women) reasons. We argue that economic conditions may play a role as the driving forces for social transformation, and opens a window for women's opportunities and empowerness.

Gender discrimination and HIV stigma among women living with HIV/AIDS are significant psychosocial and public health issues that influence health and well-being. Most adolescent girls exposed to early and forced marriages, sexual violence, and unwanted practices increase the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and AIDS. The objective of this study is to explore the influence of psychosocial determinants of gender discrimination and HIV stigma on the health and well-being of women living with HIV/AIDS in North Central Nigeria. The study employs qualitative research using research protocol to interview participants and collect data with the approval of the National Health Research Ethics of the Ministry of Health. Forty participants, male and female aged 18 and above selected through purposive sampling technique from Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) in Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria. Data collected were analyzed through thematic analysis using ATLAS.ti8 software to code, transcribe, and present a graphical and words cloud frequency analysis. The findings indicate that forced marriage predominantly among the uneducated and low socioeconomic status is a socio-cultural practice that contributes to gender discrimination and HIV stigma. It leads to psychological problems like anxiety and depression in marriage. The study, therefore, concludes that community-based behavioral intervention strategies should advocate gender equality and anti-discrimination law. Also, public awareness on sex education, forced marriage, skills acquisition, and social support system be encouraged.
