We report the discovery of Cerberus, an extremely red object detected with the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) observations in the F1000W filter of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The object is detected at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) ∼ 6, with F1000W ∼ 27 mag, and undetected in the NIRCam data gathered by the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), fainter than the 30.0–30.5 mag 5 σ detection limits in individual bands, as well as in the MIDIS F560W ultradeep data (∼29 mag, 5 σ ). We use a sample of 73 simulated satellite and central dwarf galaxies spanning a stellar mass range of 10 ^5.3 –10 ^9.1 M _⊙ to investigate the origin of their stellar age gradients. We find that dwarf galaxies often form their stars “inside-out,” i.e., the stars form at successively larger radii over time. However, the oldest stars get reshuffled beyond the star-forming radius by fluctuations in the gravitational potential well caused by stellar feedback (the same mechanisms that cause dwarfs to form dark matter cores). The result is that many dwarfs appear to have an “outside-in” age gradient at z = 0, with younger stellar populations more centrally concentrated. However, for the reshuffled galaxies with the most extended star formation, young stars can form out to the large radii to which the old stars have been reshuffled, erasing the age gradient. We find that major mergers do not play a significant role in setting the age gradients of dwarfs. We find similar age gradient trends in satellites and field dwarfs, suggesting that environment plays only a minor role, if any. Finally, we find that the age gradient trends are imprinted on the galaxies at later times, suggesting that the stellar reshuffling dominates after the galaxies have formed 50% of their stellar mass. The later reshuffling is at odds with results from the fire-2 simulations. Hence, age gradients offer a test of current star formation and feedback models that can be probed via observations of resolved stellar populations.

New JWST/NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopy provides redshifts for four z > 8 galaxies located behind the lensing cluster MACS J0416.1−2403. Two of them, “Y1” and “JD,” have previously reported spectroscopic redshifts based on Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array measurements of [O iii ] 88 μ m and/or [C ii ] 157.7 μ m lines. Y1 is a merging system of three components, and the existing redshift z = 8.31 is confirmed. However, JD is at z = 8.34 instead of the previously claimed z = 9.28. JD’s close companion, “JD-N,” which was a previously discovered z > 8 candidate, is now identified at the same redshift as JD. JD and JD-N form an interacting pair. A new candidate at z > 8, “f090d_018,” is also confirmed and is at z = 8.49. These four objects are likely part of an overdensity that signposts a large structure extending ∼165 kpc in projected distance and ∼48.7 Mpc in radial distance. They are magnified by less than 1 mag and have an intrinsic M _UV ranging from −19.57 to −20.83 mag. Their spectral energy distributions show that the galaxies are all very young with ages ∼ 4–18 Myr and stellar masses of about 10 ^7–8 M _⊙ . These infant galaxies have very different star formation rates ranging from a few to over a hundred solar masses per year, but only two of them (JD and f090d_018) have blue rest-frame UV slopes β < −2.0 indicative of a high Lyman-continuum photon escape fraction that could contribute significantly to the cosmic hydrogen-reionizing background. Interestingly, these two galaxies are the least massive and least active ones among the four. The other two systems have much flatter UV slopes largely because of their high dust extinction ( A _V = 0.9–1.0 mag). Their much lower indicated escape fractions show that even very young, actively star-forming galaxies can have a negligible contribution to reionization when they quickly form dust throughout their bodies.

Reconstructing the mass assembly history of the Milky Way relies on obtaining detailed measurements of the properties of many stars in the galaxy, especially in the stellar halo. One of the most constraining quantities is stellar age, as it can shed light on the accretion time and quenching of star formation in merging satellites. However, obtaining reliable age estimates for large samples of halo stars is difficult. We report published ages of 120 subgiant halo stars with highly radial orbits that likely belong to the debris of the Gaia-Enceladus/Sausage (GES) galaxy. The majority of these halo stars are old, with an age distribution characterized by a median of 11.6 Gyr and a 16th (84th) percentile of 10.5 (12.7) Gyr. However, the distribution is skewed, with a tail of younger stars that span ages down to ∼6–9 Gyr. All highly radial halo stars have chemical and kinematic/orbital quantities that associate them with the GES debris. Initial results suggest that these intermediate-age stars are not a product of mass transfer and/or stellar mergers, which can bias their age determination low. If this conclusion is upheld by upcoming spectrophotometric studies, then the presence of these stars will pose an important challenge for constraining the properties of the GES merger and the accretion history of the galaxy.

Observations of large amounts of massive galaxies with relatively old populations found at high redshifts are challenging galaxy formation scenarios within the standard cosmology. Precise determinations of the average age of these galaxies would be useful for the discussion of this problem. Here we carry out a better constraint of the age of 200 V-shaped spectral energy distribution (SED) nonactive galactic nucleus galaxies at redshifts 2 < z < 4 of the catalog of the FourStar Galaxy Evolution Survey, identified by the V shape in their SED with a Lyman and a Balmer break. The SED fitting includes a main stellar population in addition to a residual younger population and extinction. The galaxies are younger at a higher redshift on average. However, for the galaxies with z > 2.5, we do not see a significant evolution of their average age, with all average ages of the galaxies mostly remaining between 1 and 2 Gyr. Our research finds that most massive galaxies (∼10 ^10 M _⊙ ) are older (typically > ∼1 Gyr old) and formed earlier than less massive galaxies in our sample.

Quiescent galaxies generally possess denser cores than star-forming galaxies with similar mass. As a measurement of the core density, the central stellar mass surface density within a radius of 1 kpc (Σ _1 ) was thus suggested to be closely related to galaxy quenching. Massive star-forming galaxies with high Σ _1 do not fit into this picture. To understand the origin of such galaxies, we compare the spatially resolved stellar population and star formation properties of massive (>10 ^10.5 M _⊙ ) blue spiral galaxies with high and low Σ _1 , divided by Σ _1 = 10 ^9.4 M _⊙ kpc ^−2 , based on the final release of MaNGA integral field unit data. We find that both high-Σ _1 and low-Σ _1 blue spirals show large diversities in stellar population and star formation properties. Despite the diversities, high-Σ _1 blue spirals are statistically different from the low-Σ _1 ones. Specifically, the radial profiles of the luminosity-weighted age and Mgb/〈Fe〉 show that high-Σ _1 blue spirals consist of a larger fraction of galaxies with younger and less α -element-enhanced centers than their low-Σ _1 counterparts, ∼55% versus ∼30%. The galaxies with younger centers mostly have higher central specific star formation rates, which still follow the spaxel-based star formation main-sequence relation. Examinations of the H α velocity field and the optical structures suggest that galactic bars or galaxy interactions should be responsible for the rejuvenation of these galaxies. The remaining ∼45% of high-Σ _1 blue spirals are consistent with the inside-out growth scenario.

Using deep, narrowband imaging of the nearby spiral galaxy M101, we present stellar age information across the full extent of the disk of M101. Our narrowband filters measure age-sensitive absorption features such as the Balmer lines and the slope of the continuum between the Balmer break and 4000 Å break. We interpret these features in the context of inside-out galaxy formation theories and dynamical models of spiral structure. We confirm the galaxy’s radial age gradient, with the mean stellar age decreasing with radius. In the relatively undisturbed main disk, we find that stellar ages get progressively older with distance across a spiral arm, consistent with the large-scale shock scenario in a quasi-steady spiral wave pattern. Unexpectedly, we find the same pattern across spiral arms in the outer disk as well, beyond the corotation radius of the main spiral pattern. We suggest that M101 has a dynamic, or transient, spiral pattern with multiple pattern speeds joined together via mode coupling to form coherent spiral structure. This scenario connects the radial age gradient inherent to inside-out galaxy formation with the across-arm age gradients predicted by dynamic spiral arm theories across the full radial extent of the galaxy.

We demonstrate that the inference of galaxy stellar masses via spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting techniques for galaxies formed in the first billion years after the Big Bang carries fundamental uncertainties owing to the loss of star formation history (SFH) information from the very first episodes of star formation in the integrated spectra of galaxies. While this early star formation can contribute substantially to the total stellar mass of high-redshift systems, ongoing star formation at the time of detection outshines the residual light from earlier bursts, hampering the determination of accurate stellar masses. As a result, order-of-magnitude uncertainties in stellar masses can be expected. We demonstrate this potential problem via direct numerical simulation of galaxy formation in a cosmological context. In detail, we carry out two cosmological simulations with significantly different stellar feedback models, which span a significant range in SFH burstiness. We compute the mock SEDs for these model galaxies at z = 7 via calculations of 3D dust radiative transfer, and then backward fit these SEDs with prospector SED fitting software. The uncertainties in derived stellar masses that we find for z > 7 galaxies motivate the development of new techniques and/or priors for SFH to model star formation in the early Universe.

The new capabilities that JWST offers in the near- and mid-infrared (IR) are used to investigate in unprecedented detail the nature of optical/near-IR-faint, mid-IR-bright sources, with HST-dark galaxies among them. We gather JWST data from the CEERS survey in the Extended Groth Strip, jointly with HST data, and analyze spatially resolved optical-to-mid-IR spectral energy distributions to estimate photometric redshifts in two dimensions and stellar population properties on a pixel-by-pixel basis for red galaxies detected by NIRCam. We select 138 galaxies with F150W − F356W > 1.5 mag and F356W < 27.5 mag. The nature of these sources is threefold: (1) 71% are dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 2 < z < 6 with $9\lt \mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\lt 11$ and a variety of specific SFRs (100 Gyr ^−1 ); (2) 18% are quiescent/dormant (i.e., subject to reignition/rejuvenation) galaxies (QGs) at 3 < z < 5, with $\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\sim 10$ and poststarburst mass-weighted ages (0.5–1.0 Gyr); and (3) 11% are strong young starbursts with indications of high equivalent width emission lines (typically, [O iii ]+H β ) at 6 < z < 7 (XELG- z 6) and $\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\sim 9.5$ . The sample is dominated by disk-like galaxies with remarkable compactness for XELG- z 6 (effective radii smaller than 0.4 kpc). Large attenuations in SFGs, 2 < A ( V ) < 5 mag, are found within 1.5 times the effective radius, approximately 2 kpc, while QGs present A ( V ) ∼ 0.2 mag. Our SED-fitting technique reproduces the expected dust emission luminosities of IR-bright and submillimeter galaxies. This study implies high levels of star formation activity between z ∼ 20 and z ∼ 10, where virtually 100% of our galaxies had already formed 10 ^8 M _⊙ , 60% had assembled 10 ^9 M _⊙ , and 10% up to 10 ^10 M _⊙ (in situ or ex situ).

It is well established that the Hubble residuals of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) show the luminosity step with respect to their host galaxy stellar masses. This “mass step” is taken as an additional correction factor for the SN Ia luminosity standardization. Here we investigate the root cause of the mass step and propose that the bimodal nature of the host age distribution is responsible for the step. In particular, by using the empirical nonlinear mass-to-age relation of local galaxies, we convert the mass function of SN Ia hosts to their age distribution. We find that the age distribution shows clear bimodality: a younger ( 6 Gyr) group with higher mass (∼10 ^10.5 M _Sun ). On the Hubble residual versus host-mass plane, the two groups create the mass step at ∼10 ^10 M _Sun . This leads us to conclude that the host galaxy mass step can be attributed to the bimodal age distribution in relation to a nonlinear relation between galaxy mass and age. We suggest that the mass step is another manifestation of the old “red sequence” and the young “blue cloud” observed in the galactic color–magnitude diagram.

The mechanism by which galaxies stop forming stars and get rid of their interstellar medium (ISM) remains elusive. Here, we study a sample of more than 2000 elliptical galaxies in which dust emission has been detected. This is the largest sample of such galaxies ever analyzed. We infer the timescale for removal of dust in these galaxies and investigate its dependence on physical and environmental properties. We obtain a dust-removal timescale in elliptical galaxies of τ = 2.26 ± 0.18 Gyr, corresponding to a half-life time of 1.57 ± 0.12 Gyr. This timescale does not depend on environment, stellar mass, or redshift. We observe a departure of dusty elliptical galaxies from the relation between star formation rate and dust mass. This is caused by the star formation rates declining faster than the dust masses and indicates that there exists an internal mechanism that affects star formation but leaves the ISM intact. Morphological quenching together with ionization or outflows caused by older stellar populations (Type Ia supernovae or planetary nebulae) is consistent with these observations.

We present an analysis of nearly 1000 near-infrared, integrated-light spectra from APOGEE in the inner ∼7 kpc of M31. We utilize full-spectrum fitting with A-LIST simple stellar population spectral templates that represent a population of stars with the same age, [M/H], and [ α /M]. With this, we determine the mean kinematics, metallicities, α abundances, and ages of the stellar populations of M31's bar, bulge, and inner disk (∼4–7 kpc). We find a nonaxisymmetric velocity field in M31 resulting from the presence of a bar. The bulge of M31 is less metal-rich (mean [M/H] = $-{0.149}_{-0.081}^{+0.067}$ dex) than the disk, features minima in metallicity on either side of the bar ([M/H] ∼ −0.2), and is enhanced in α abundance (mean [ α /M] = ${0.281}_{-0.038}^{+0.035}$ ). The disk of M31 within ∼7 kpc is enhanced in both metallicity ([M/H] = $-{0.023}_{-0.052}^{+0.050}$ ) and α abundance ([ α /M] = ${0.274}_{-0.025}^{+0.020}$ ). Both of these structural components are uniformly old at ≃12 Gyr. We find the mean metallicity increases with distance from the center of M31, with the steepest gradient along the disk major axis (0.043 ± 0.021 dex kpc ^−1 ). This gradient is the result of changing light contributions from the bulge and disk. The chemodynamics of stellar populations encodes information about a galaxy’s chemical enrichment, star formation history, and merger history, allowing us to discuss new constraints on M31's formation. Our results provide a stepping stone between our understanding of the Milky Way and other external galaxies.

We present the deepest constraints yet on the median rest-UV+optical spectral energy distribution (SED) of z ∼ 10 galaxies prior to James Webb Space Telescope science operations. We constructed stacks based on four robust J _125 dropouts, previously identified across the GOODS fields. We used archival Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 data and the full-depth Spitzer/IRAC mosaics from the GREATS program, the deepest coverage at ∼3–5 μ m to date. The most remarkable feature of the SED is a blue IRAC [3.6]–[4.5] = −0.18 ± 0.25 mag color. We also find a nearly flat H _160 − [3.6] = 0.07 ± 0.22 mag color, corresponding to a UV slope β = −1.92 ± 0.25. This is consistent with previous studies and indicative of minimal dust absorption. The observed blue IRAC color and SED fitting suggest that z ∼ 10 galaxies have very young (few × 10 Myr) stellar populations, with 80% of stars being formed in the last ≲160 Myr (2 σ ). While an exciting result, the uncertainties on the SED are too large to allow us to place strong constraints on the presence of a nebular continuum in z ∼ 10 galaxies (as might be suggested by the blue [3.6]–[4.5] < 0 mag color). The resulting sSFR is consistent with the specific accretion rate of dark matter halos, indicative of a star formation efficiency showing quite limited evolution at such early epochs.

The ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II (Ret II) exhibits a unique chemical evolution history, with ${72}_{-12}^{+10}$ % of its stars strongly enhanced in r -process elements. We present deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry of Ret II and analyze its star formation history. As in other ultra-faint dwarfs, the color–magnitude diagram is best fit by a model consisting of two bursts of star formation. If we assume that the bursts were instantaneous, then the older burst occurred around the epoch of reionization, forming ∼80% of the stars in the galaxy, while the remainder of the stars formed ∼3 Gyr later. When the bursts are allowed to have nonzero durations, we obtain slightly better fits. The best-fitting model in this case consists of two bursts beginning before reionization, with approximately half the stars formed in a short (100 Myr) burst and the other half in a more extended period lasting 2.6 Gyr. Considering the full set of viable star formation history models, we find that 28% of the stars formed within 500 ± 200 Myr of the onset of star formation. The combination of the star formation history and the prevalence of r -process-enhanced stars demonstrates that the r -process elements in Ret II must have been synthesized early in its initial star-forming phase. We therefore constrain the delay time between the formation of the first stars in Ret II and the r -process nucleosynthesis to be less than 500 Myr. This measurement rules out an r -process source with a delay time of several Gyr or more, such as GW170817.

We study the impact of galaxy mergers on stellar population profiles/gradients of early-type galaxies (ETGs) using ETGs at z < 0.055 in the Stripe 82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and MaNGA integral field unit spectroscopic data. Tidal features around ETGs, which are detected from deep coadded images, are regarded as direct observational evidence for recent mergers. We find that ETGs with tidal features have less negative metallicity gradients and more positive age gradients than ETGs without tidal features at M _star ≳ 10 ^10.6 M _⊙ . Moreover, when integrating all the resolved stellar populations, ETGs with tidal features have lower metallicities by ∼0.07 dex and younger ages by ∼1–2 Gyr than ETGs without tidal features. We combine an unprecedented MaNGA sample of over 3000 passive galaxies in the stellar mass range 10 ^9 –10 ^12 M _⊙ with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey group catalog by Tinker to quantify how central and satellite formation, quantified by radial profiles in stellar age, [Fe/H], and [Mg/Fe], depends on the stellar mass of the galaxy ( M _* ) and the mass of the host halo ( M _h ). After controlling for M _* and M _h , the stacked spectra of centrals and satellites beyond the effective radius ( r _e ) show small, yet significant differences in multiple spectral features at the 1% level. According to spectral fitting with the code alf , a primary driver of these differences appears to be [Mg/Fe] variations, suggesting that stellar populations in the outskirts of satellites formed more rapidly than the outer populations of centrals. To probe the physical mechanisms that may be responsible for this signal, we examined how satellite stellar populations depend on M _h . We find that satellites in high- M _h halos show older stellar ages, lower [Fe/H], and higher [Mg/Fe] compared to satellites in low- M _h halos, especially for M _* = 10 ^9.5 –10 ^10.5 M _⊙ . These signals lend support to environmentally driven processes that quench satellite galaxies, although variations in the merger histories of central and satellite galaxies also emerge as a viable explanation.

In this work, we perform a full-spectrum fitting of 350 massive and passive galaxies selected as cosmic chronometers from the LEGA-C ESO public survey to derive their stellar ages, metallicities, and star formation histories. We extensively test our results by assessing their dependence on the possible contribution of dust, calibration of noise and signal, and use of photometric data in addition to spectral information; we also identify indicators of the correct convergence of the results, including the shape of the posterior distributions, the analysis of specific spectral features, and the correct reproduction of the observed spectrum. We derive a clear age–redshift trend compatible with the aging in a standard cosmological model showing a clear downsizing pattern, with more massive galaxies being formed at higher redshift ( z _f ∼ 2.5) with respect to less massive ones ( z _f ∼ 2). From these data, we measure the differential aging of this population of cosmic chronometers to derive a new measurement of the Hubble parameter, obtaining $H(z=0.8)=113.1\pm 15.1(\mathrm{stat}.{)}_{-11.3}^{+29.1}(\mathrm{syst}.)$ . This analysis allows us to compare for the first time the differential ages of cosmic chronometers measured on the same sample with two completely different methods, the full-spectrum fit (this work) and the analysis of Lick indices, known to correlate with the age and metallicity of the stellar populations. Albeit an understood offset in the absolute ages, the differential ages have proven to be extremely compatible between the two methods, despite the very different data, assumptions, and models considered, demonstrating the robustness of the method.
