As shale oil exploration and development intensifies， the experimental technologies for shale oil development have been continuously improved while inheriting the experimental technologies and methods of conventional reservoirs and shale gas reservoirs， and a set of experimental technology systems of reservoir physics and flow mechanisms has been initially formed， which provides strong technical support for geological evaluation of shale reservoirs， reservoir engineering optimization design， and enhanced oil recovery. The development status of six experimental technologies in China and abroad， including porosity， permeability， oil-water saturation， wettability， relative permeability， and imbibition， was systematically summarized. In view of the characteristics of continental shale oil， such as low maturity， strong heterogeneity， and well-developed lamina and micro-fractures， the measurement methods and principles， key influencing factors， control conditions of experiments， advantages and disadvantages and technical applicability of experiment methods were analyzed. The main problems， development trends， and research direction of these experimental technologies were put forward. The results show that ① unifying the cleaning agent and cleaning time of rock samples is the key to improving the comparability of different measurement methods of porosity， and nuclear magnetic resonance measurement of porosity is the technological development direction to meet the needs of rapid analysis in mining fields； ② the irregular and multi-directional permeability measurement technology capable of simulating formation pressure changes is the future technological development direction； ③ the alcohol soaking method and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance （T1-T2） method are the technological development direction of the determination of shale oil-water saturation， but they still face the problem of the influence of clay bound water and adsorbed oil on the determination accuracy； ④ the droplet morphology method is one of the future development directions of measurement technology of shale reservoir wettability， which requires further research and unified standards in experimental methods and comprehensive evaluation methods for surface wetting and spontaneous imbibition processes； ⑤ the combination of experimental measurement and numerical method is an effective way to obtain the relative permeability of shale reservoirs， and the micro-oil and water metering， end-effect correction， as well as technologies and methods considering the time-varying pressure are the key directions； ⑥ pressure imbibition measurement method should be used to evaluate imbibition effect and optimize well kill time in elastic development after fracturing. Pressure imbibition measurement methods based on nuclear magnetic resonance T2 spectrum， stratification T2 spectrum， and T1-T2 spectrum will be one of the essential technological development directions.

Multi-resonant metasurfaces are of great significance in the applications of multi-band nanophotonics. Here, we propose a novel metasurface design scheme for simultaneously supporting quasi-bound states in continuum (QBIC) and other resonant modes, in which QBIC resonance is generated by mirror or rotational symmetry breaking in oligomers while other resonant modes can be simultaneously excited by rationally designing the shapes of meta-atoms within oligomers. As an example, the simultaneous excitation of QBIC and anapole modes are demonstrated in a dimer metasurface composed of asymmetric dumbbell-shaped apertures. Based on the far-field multipole decomposition and near-field electromagnetic field distributions, the origin mechanisms of QBIC and anapole mode are elucidated. The symmetry breaking of dumbbell-shaped dimer results in QBIC. Within a certain asymmetric variation range, the contributions of toroidal dipole moment and electric dipole moment with approximately equal magnitudes remain dominant, which allows the anapole mode to always present. The effectiveness of the proposed design scheme is further confirmed by the experimental results identical with the evolutions of numerical simulation. In terahertz biosensing experiments, the anapole mode exhibits a higher sensitivity of 271.3 GHz (nmol/μl)−1, whereas the QBIC can achieve a lower detection limit of 0.015 nmol/μl and expands the detection range by almost an order of magnitude. Our findings are beneficial to designing multi-resonant metasurfaces with different resonance modes and promote the corresponding applications in the fields of biosensing, lasers, filtering, and nonlinearity.

Abstract Objective Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising approach for the treatment of epilepsy. However, the optimal target for DBS and underlying mechanisms are still not clear. Here, we compared the therapeutic effects of DBS on distinct septal subregions, aimed to find the precise targets of septal DBS and related mechanisms for the clinical treatment. Methods Assisted by behavioral test, electroencephalography (EEG) recording and analyzing, selectively neuronal manipulation and immunohistochemistry, we assessed the effects of DBS on the three septal subregions in kainic acid (KA)‐induced mouse seizure model. Results DBS in the medial septum (MS) not only delayed generalized seizure (GS) development, but reduced the severity; DBS in the vertical diagonal band of Broca (VDB) only reduced the severity of GS, while DBS in the horizontal diagonal band of Broca (HDB) subregion showed no anti‐seizure effect. Notably, DBS in the MS much more efficiently decreased abnormal activation of hippocampal neurons. EEG spectrum analysis indicated that DBS in the MS and VDB subregions mainly increased the basal hippocampal low‐frequency (delta and theta) rhythm. Furthermore, ablation of cholinergic neurons in the MS and VDB subregions blocked the anti‐seizure and EEG‐modulating effects of septal DBS, suggesting the seizure‐alleviating effect of DBS was dependent on local cholinergic neurons. Significance DBS in the MS and VDB, rather than HDB, attenuates hippocampal seizure by activation of cholinergic neurons‐augmented hippocampal delta/theta rhythm. This may be of great therapeutic significance for the clinical treatment of epilepsy with septal DBS. Plain Language Summary The optical target of deep brain stimulation in the septum is still not clear. This study demonstrated that stimulation in the medial septum and vertical diagonal band of Broca subregions, but not the horizontal diagonal band of Broca, could alleviate hippocampal seizure through cholinergic neurons‐augmented hippocampal delta/theta rhythm. This study may shed light on the importance of precise regulation of deep brain stimulation therapy in treating epileptic seizures.

Cataract patients look forwards to fewer postoperative complications and higher vision quality after surgery. However, the current intraocular lens (IOL) implanted after cataract surgery neither can adjust focal length in response to ciliary muscle contraction as natural lens nor have the ability to prevent postoperative complications. Herein, a thermosensitve Poloxamer based hybrid hydrogel with antibacterial anti-inflammatory and photothermal functional elements doping was designed and used as injectable, in situ curable, and adjustable IOL (FHTAB IOL). The FHTAB IOL was composed of thermosensitve triblock-polymer F127DA and a small amount of HAMA, combined with BP NS, TA, and Ag NPs. FHTAB IOL can be injected into the empty lens capsule after cataract surgery via an injectable thermos-gel under NIR illumination and then be rapidly cured to form a full-size IOL under short-time blue light irradiation. The designed injectable FHTAB IOL possesses high transparency and transmittance, with a refractive index similar to the natural lens and adjustable properties. It was stabilized as a refractive medium without any leakage in the eye. In addition, the TA and Ag NPs loaded in the FHTAB IOL displayed significant antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and vivo. This study presents a potentially effective new strategy for the development of multifunctional adjustable IOLs.

Abstract The human cannot detect light with a wavelength exceeding 700 nm, primarily due to limitations in the physiological structure of the human eye. However, in certain specific scenarios, the ability to detect near-infrared (NIR) light proves to be extremely valuable. To attain this desired capability, NIR up conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were prepared and doped in the optical lens materials, aiming to obtain a NIR light “visible” optical lens. It is demonstrated that the doping of UCNPs in the optical lens materials does not significantly impact on their mechanical properties, optical properties, surface properties and it exhibits excellent biocompatibility in cell and animal experiments. More importantly, the UCNPs doping can convert NIR light into visible light within the material effectively and stably. The eyes can “see” the NIR light after wearing such UCNPs doped optical lens. Such NIR light visible optical lens could have great potential in actual applications. Graphical Abstract

Endometritis represents a prevalent condition in perinatal dairy cows. Bovine endometrial epithelial cells (BEECs), as the primary interface between cavity and the external environment, are particularly vulnerable to infection by pathogenic bacteria following parturition. A20 is essential for regulating inflammation and modulating immune responses. Nevertheless, the exact role of A20 in the BEECs in response to inflammatory response is not fully understood. An endometritis model infected by Escherichia coli (E. coli) in vivo and a BEECs inflammation model induced with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro were built to investigate the function and governing mechanisms of A20 in endometritis. The results showed that infection with E. coli resulted in endometrial damage, inflammatory cell infiltration, and upregulation of inflammatory factors in dairy cows. Furthermore, A20 expression was upregulated in the endometrium of cows with endometritis and in BEECs following LPS stimulation. A20 overexpression attenuated the level of proinflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated BEECs; conversely, A20 knockdown lead to an exacerbated response to LPS stimulation. The overexpression of A20 was shown to activate autophagy and suppress the NF-κB signaling pathway in LPS-stimulated BEECs. However, blocking autophagy with chloroquine notably attenuated the anti-inflammatory effect of A20, leading to the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. In summary, the study demonstrated that A20’s suppression of inflammation in LPS-stimulated BEECs is associated with the activation of autophagy. Therefore, the A20 protein showed potential as a novel treatment focus for managing endometritis in dairy cows.

Background: Managing refractory epilepsy presents a significant a substantial clinical challenge. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a promising avenue for addressing refractory epilepsy. However, the optimal stimulation targets and effective parameters of DBS to reduce seizures remian unidentified. Objectives: This study endeavors to scrutinize the therapeutic potential of DBS within the zona incerta (ZI) across diverse seizure models and elucidate the associated underlying mechanisms. Methods: We evaluated the therapeutic potential of DBS with different frequencies in the ZI on kainic acid (KA)-induced TLE model or M1-cortical seizures model, pilocarpine-induced M1-cortical seizure models, and KA-induced epilepsy model. Further, employing calcium fiber photometry combined with cell-specific ablation, we sought to clarified the causal role of ZI GABAergic neurons in mediating the therapeutic effects of DBS. Results: Our findings reveal that DBS in the ZI alleviated the severity of seizure activities in the KA-induced TLE model. Meanwhile, DBS attenuated seizure activities in KA- or pilocarpine-induced M1-cortical seizure model. In addition, DBS exerts a mitigating influence on KA induced epilepsy model. DBS in the ZI showed anti-seizure effects at low frequency spectrum, with 5 Hz exhibiting optimal efficacy. The low-frequency DBS significantly increased the calcium activities of ZI GABAergic neurons. Furthermore, selective ablation of ZI GABAergic neurons with taCasp3 blocked the anti-seizure effect of low-frequency DBS, indicating the anti-seizure effect of DBS is mediated by the activation of ZI GABAergic neurons. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that low-frequency DBS in the ZI attenuates seizure via driving GABAergic neuronal activity. This suggests that the ZI represents a potential DBS target for treating both hippocampal and cortical seizure through the activation of GABAergic neurons, thereby holding therapeutic significance for seizure treatment.

Summary: Endometriosis is a chronic multisystem disease associated with immunological, genetic, hormonal, psychological, and neuroscientific factors, leading to a significant socioeconomic impact worldwide. Though multidisciplinary management is the ideal approach, there remains a scarcity of published interdisciplinary clinical trials at present. Here, we have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics and issues of interdisciplinary trials on endometriosis based on the clinical registration database ClinicalTrials.gov. Among all 387 endometriosis trials, 30% (116) were identified as interdisciplinary, mostly conducted in Europe and North America, and fully funded by non-industrial sources. We documented growth in both patient-centered multidisciplinary comprehensive management and collaboration between fundamental biomedical science and applied medicine. However, compared to traditional obstetric-gynecological trials, interdisciplinary studies exhibited negative characteristics such as less likely to be randomized and less likely to report results. Our study provides insights for future trial investigators and may contribute to fostering greater collaboration in medical research.

Dynamic manipulation of terahertz (THz) beams plays an important role in THz application systems. The PB metasurface provides an effective scheme for space separation and deflection of the spin beam. However, mirror symmetry locking of the conjugated spin states severely limits the versatility of the device. In this work, we demonstrate a liquid crystal (LC) cascaded bilayer metasurface that includes an LC layer, anisotropic metasurface, and PB metasurface. By controlling anisotropy and polarization conversion effects, dynamic spin asymmetric transmission is realized. Meanwhile, two different dynamic energy distribution processes are realized between the L and R state with the corresponding deflection side. The results show that the device achieves a large angular spatial dispersion within the frequency-angle scanning range of ±35° to ±75° corresponding to the broadband range of 0.6–1.1 THz. Moreover, it achieves a spin beam spatial separation with a maximum proportion of energy distribution greater than 26 dB, and the active modulation rate in the energy distribution process reaches 98 %. This work provides a dynamic THz spin conversion and efficient large-angle beam scanning, with important potentials in wavelength/polarization division multiplexing and frequency-scanning antenna for large-capacity THz wireless communication, radar, and imaging systems.

Abstract Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery. Drug-eluting intraocular lens (IOLs) is a promising concept of PCO treatment in modern cataract surgery. However, the large dose of drugs in IOL leads to uncontrollable and unpredictable drug release, which inevitably brings risks of overtreatment and ocular toxicity. Herein, a low-power NIR-triggered thermosensitive IOL named IDG@P(NIPAM-co-AA)-IOL is proposed to improve security and prevent PCO by synergetic controlled drug therapy and simultaneous photo-therapy. Thermosensitive polymer brushes Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-Acrylic acid) (P(NIPAM-co-AA)) is prepared on IOL via surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (SI-RAFT) polymerization. Then, Doxorubicin (DOX) and Indocyanine green (ICG) co-loaded Gelatin NPs (IDG NPs) are loaded in P(NIPAM-co-AA) by temperature control. The IDG NPs perform in suit photodynamic & photothermal therapy (PTT&PDT), and the produced heat also provides a trigger for controllable drug therapy with a cascade effect. Such functional IOL shows excellent synergistic drug-phototherapy effect and NIR-triggered drug release behavior. And there is no obvious PCO occurrence in IDG@P(NIPAM-co-AA) IOL under NIR irradiation compared with control group. This proposed IDG@P(NIPAM-co-AA)-IOL serves as a promising platform that combines phototherapy and drug-therapy to enhance the therapeutic potential and medication safety for future clinical application of PCO treatment.

Abstract Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), one common type of medically refractory epilepsy, is accompanied with altered adult-born dentate granule cells (abDGCs). However, the causal role of abDGCs in recurrent seizures of TLE is not fully understood. Here, taking advantage of optogenetic and chemogenetic tools to selectively manipulate abDGCs in a reversible manner, combined with Ca2+ fiber photometry, trans-synaptic viral tracing, in vivo/vitro electrophysiology approaches, we aimed to test the role of abDGCs born at different period of epileptogenic insult in later recurrent seizures in mouse TLE models. We found that abDGCs were functionally inhibited during recurrent seizures. Optogenetic activation of abDGCs significantly extended, while inhibition curtailed, the seizure duration. This seizure-modulating effect was attributed to specific abDGCs born at a critical early phase after kindled status, which experienced specific type of circuit re-organization. Further, abDGCs extended seizure duration via local excitatory circuit with early-born granule cells (ebDGCs). Repeated modulation of “abDGC-ebDGC” circuit may easily induce a change of synaptic plasticity, and achieve long-term anti-seizure effects in both kindling and kainic acid-induced TLE models. Together, we demonstrate that abDGCs born at a critical period of epileptogenic insult maintain seizure duration via local aberrant excitatory circuits, and inactivation of these aberrant circuits can long-termly alleviate severity of seizures. This provides a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the potential pathological changes of abDGCs circuit and may be helpful for the precise treatment in TLE.

Abstract Seizures due to cortical dysplasia are notorious for their poor prognosis even with medications and surgery, likely due to the widespread seizure network. Previous studies have primarily focused on the disruption of dysplastic lesions, rather than remote regions such as the hippocampus. Here, we first quantified the epileptogenicity of the hippocampus in patients with late-stage cortical dysplasia. We further investigated the cellular substrates leading to the epileptic hippocampus, using multiscale tools including calcium imaging, optogenetics, immunohistochemistry and electrophysiology. For the first time, we revealed the role of hippocampal somatostatin-positive interneurons in cortical dysplasia-related seizures. Somatostatin-positive were recruited during cortical dysplasia-related seizures. Interestingly, optogenetic studies suggested that somatostatin-positive interneurons paradoxically facilitated seizure generalization. By contrast, parvalbumin-positive interneurons retained an inhibitory role as in controls. Electrophysiological recordings and immunohistochemical studies revealed glutamate-mediated excitatory transmission from somatostatin-positive interneurons in the dentate gyrus. Taken together, our study reveals a novel role of excitatory somatostatin-positive neurons in the seizure network and brings new insights into the cellular basis of cortical dysplasia.

Due to the diverse development trend of modern media, new media arts and applications are being presented in the field of vocal performance teaching with its many advantages of interactivity, immediacy, sharing, comprehensiveness, versatility, community, and personalization. In this paper, by decoding the EEG signal, through the decoding process of EEG data pre-processing, feature extraction, feature identification, and classification, and calculating the significance of each element in the time-frequency matrix, an iso-dimensional mask matrix can be obtained. Then the conditional random field model is established on the random field theory to get the parameters of the model. Finally, the parameters of the model are obtained by maximizing the following entropy function, which is brought into the Lagrangian operator to obtain the pairwise Lagrangian operator. Finally, the EEG signal is decoded to realize the self-control training of vocal performance teaching in the new media environment. The experimental results show that by conducting the intervention test on self-control and vocal performance insight, the mean value of the total self-control score in self-control training is 61.99±11.45, and the intervention effect has stability. Therefore, improving self-control, forming correct expressions and forms, and enriching emotions are important for vocal performance.

The raphe nuclei, the primary resource of forebrain 5-HT, play an important but heterogeneous role in regulating subcortical excitabilities. Fundamental circuit organizations of different median raphe (MR) subsystems are far from completely understood. In the present study, using cell-specific viral tracing, Ca2+ fiber photometry and epilepsy model, we map out the forebrain efferent and afferent of different MR Pet+ subpopulations and their divergent roles in epilepsy. We found that PetMR neurons send both collateral and parallel innervations to different downstream regions through different subpopulations. Notably, CA3-projecting PetMR subpopulations are largely distinct from habenula (Hb)-projecting PetMR subpopulations in anatomical distribution and topological organization, while majority of the CA3-projecting PetMR subpopulations are overlapped with the medial septum (MS)-projecting PetMR subpopulations. Further, using Ca2+ fiber photometry, we monitor activities of PetMR neurons in hippocampal-kindling seizure, a classical epilepsy model with pathological mechanisms caused by excitation-inhibition imbalance. We found that soma activities of PetMR neurons are heterogeneous during different periods of generalized seizures. These divergent activities are contributed by different projection-defined PetMR subpopulations, manifesting as increased activities in CA3 but decreased activity in Hb resulting from their upstream differences. Together, our findings provide a novel framework of MR subsystems showing that projection-defined MR Pet+ subpopulations are topologically heterogenous with divergent circuit connections and are diversely implicated in seizures. This may help in the understanding of heterogeneous nature of MR 5-HTergic subsystems and the paradox roles of 5-HTergic systems in epilepsy.

AbstractThe primary purpose of this paper is to explore the herding behavior in the Chinese stock market during COVID-19 and the asymmetry of that behavior using the daily returns of A- and B-shares from 2 January 2019, to 15 October 2021. The study uses the cross-sectional absolute deviation model to analyze stock market herding behavior by non-linear polynomial regression. We show that the herding behavior in the Chinese stock market is more prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic. Herding behavior has a negative effect on stock market volatility. Moreover, such a suppressing effect weakened during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an asymmetry in herding behavior during the bull and bear markets, which is helpful in our investigation of the market’s volatility during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pronounced asymmetry in the herding behavior of the Chinese stock market during COVID-19 is assessed using the E-GARCH (p, q) model. The empirical results of the present study contribute to the literature about herding asymmetry by showing the herding behavior during the health crisis and bull and bear markets. It also helps reconcile the debate about the impact of herding on market stability and provides insightful guidance for investors wishing to invest in the Chinese stock market.

Neocortical epilepsy is resistant to current treatments. Zhao et al. report that optogenetic stimulation of astrocytes effectively attenuates seizures via driving Na+-K+-ATPase, indicating a potential treatment strategy for intractable epilepsy.

Atomically precise artificial lattices of dopant-based quantum dots offer a tunable platform for simulations of interacting fermionic models. By leveraging advances in fabrication and atomic-state control, Wang et al. report quantum simulations of the 2D Fermi-Hubbard model on a 3 × 3 few-dopant quantum dot array.

The subiculum is known to contribute to seizures in epilepsy. Here the authors investigate the circuit mechanism by which the subiculum contributes to initiation and propagation of hippocampal seizures in a mouse model.

To investigate the shifts in the biochemical composition of hybrid grouper during the early larval stages, we collected samples at various developmental milestones, spanning from newly hatched larvae (stage I) to 4 days after hatching (stage V). Our findings revealed several notable trends: (1) The total length of hybrid grouper larvae exhibited a significant increase as the yolk-sac absorption progressed from stage I to V. Concurrently, there was a marked decrease in yolk volume and oil volume during the transition from stage I to III, followed by a gradual decline from stage III to V. (2) Dry weight and total lipid content displayed a rapid reduction throughout the larval development period, while the total protein content exhibited a declining trend. (3) The concentrations of triacylglycerols and wax esters/steryl esters decreased considerably, particularly at stage V. However, no differences were observed among the contents of ketones, hydrocarbons, and sterols. (4) As yolk-sac larvae developed from stage I to V, a significant reduction was observed in the levels of essential amino acids (EAAs), such as leucine, valine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, glycine, alanine, serine, proline, and tyrosine. This trend was also observed for non-EAAs and total amino acids, with fluctuations in the content of other amino acids. (5) There was a significant decrease in the levels of specific fatty acids, including C16:0, saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), C18:0, 18:1n-9, and C20:4n-6. In contrast, the contents of C22:6n-3, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), n-3 PUFA, n-6 PUFA, and the combination of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) + eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), as well as the DHA/EPA ratio, remained stable from stage I to III but declined thereafter. (6) During the early developmental stages, the utilization sequence of fatty acids followed a pattern of prioritizing SFAs, followed by MUFAs, n-6 PUFA, and n-3 PUFA. These findings provide further insights into the nutritional priorities of hybrid grouper larvae during their early development, with a particular emphasis on lipids and fatty acids as vital energy sources. Additionally, our results highlight variations in the efficiency of utilization among different types of fatty acids, while protein utilization remained relatively stable, characterized by the selective consumption of amino acid content.

The electric vehicle thermal management system (EVTMS) plays a crucial role in ensuring battery efficiency, driving range, and passenger comfort. However, EVTMSs still face unresolved challenges, such as accurate modeling, compensating for temperature variations, and achieving efficient control strategies. Addressing these issues is crucial for enhancing the performance, reliability, and energy efficiency of electric vehicles. Therefore, this study presents a cooling EVTMS model, considering both the battery pack temperature and the cabin comfort, and utilizes the prediction of neural network as a feedforward in a fuzzy PI controller to compensate for the model temperature variations. The simulation results reveal that, compared with PI controller and MPC, the neural network fuzzy PI (NN-Fuzzy PI) controller can well predict and compensate for the system’s nonlinear characteristics as well as the time-delay caused by heat transfer, achieving superior control performance and reducing energy consumption. The battery pack temperature and PMV fluctuations are effectively constrained within [−0.5, 0.5] and [−0.1, 0.1], reducing up to 150% and 164%, and the energy consumption of the pump and compressor are reduced by up to 0.23 and 100.1 KJ, with ranges of 18% and 2.68%. Meanwhile, the neural network feedforward also works effectively in different controllers. The findings of this research can provide valuable insights for TMS engineers to select advanced control strategies.

Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of a bilateral paravertebral block (PVB) on cognitive function in elderly patients undergoing radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Methods Sixty patients (40 men and 20 women) aged 65–80 undergoing radical gastrectomy surgery under general anaesthesia were included and randomly assigned to either the PVB group or the control group. Patients in the PVB group had before incision a single-shot ultrasound-guided bilateral PVB at the T8 level with 20 mL of ropivacaine 0.375%, while patients in the control group had no block. Patients in both groups had a BIS-guided total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol and remifentanil infusions. Postoperative cognitive function assessed by the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and NSE (neuron-specific enolase) was the primary outcome. Artificial magnetic fields are unavoidable environment for offshore marine organisms. With the substantially increasing submarine cables, the impact of magnetic field generated by cables on marine organisms has gradually attracted people’s attention. However, there are few studies on the effect of magnetic field on molluscs. To explore whether magnetic fields could interfere with the physiological functions of offshore molluscs, here we systematically analyzed the change of metabolism and transcriptome of Elysia leucolegnote exposed to either geomagnetic field or 1.1 T static magnetic field. The blood glucose and lipid levels, as well as the activities of antioxidant enzymes in E. leucolegnote were significantly increased upon the exposure to high static magnetic field for 10 days. Meanwhile, the activities of enzymes related to digestive performance and liver functions were decreased. Possible mechanisms were further revealed through comparative transcriptome analysis. A total of 836 differentially expressed genes were identified, 352 of which were up-regulated and 484 of which were down-regulated after exposure to the high static magnetic field. The up-regulated differential genes were mainly concentrated in lysosomal and apoptotic pathways, and down-regulated differential genes were mainly involved in digestive and immune systems including phagocytosis. This pattern was further confirmed by RT-qPCR analysis. In conclusion, prolonged exposure to a 1.1 T static magnetic field increased oxidative stress and blood glucose and lipid levels, and decreased immunity and physiological conditions in E. leucolegnote. The data we presented here provides a comprehensive view of metabolism change and gene expression pattern of E. leucolegnote exposed to static magnetic field. It may expand our knowledge on the magnetic field effects on offshore mollusc at molecular level, and contribute to clarification of the interaction between marine animals and artificial magnetic fields, which is certainly ecologically important.

The circadian rhythm is a physiological phenomenon that occurs in various organisms with a cycle of about 24 hours. Light is one of the important environmental factors affecting biological rhythm. To clarify whether a shift in light spectrum can influence the circadian expression in fish brain, a total of 175 European seabasses [body weight: 32.5 ± 0.71) g; body length: (13.78 ± 0.35) cm] were exposed to white light (WL), red light (RL), yellow light (YL), green light (GL) or blue light (BL). After 50 days of exposure, circadian expressions of four core clock genes (Clock, Bmal1, Per2, Cry1) and Aanat2 gene in brain were examined. The results showed that the temporal expression patterns of positive clock gens (Clock and Bmal1) showed increases during the scotophase and decreases during the photophase, with peaks near the middle of the darkness. Clock gene expression showed a stable circadian rhythm (R2 = 0.578-0.824, P=0.000- 0.027) in all light groups while Bmal1 showed circadian rhythm in WL, GL and RL, not in BL and YL. Daily expression patterns of the negative clock genes oscillated in the opposite phase from the positive clock genes, showing increasing mRNA levels during the light, decreases during the dark, and peaks near the shift from night to day, except Per2 in RL and Cry1 in BL. Compared with WL, the acrophases of Clock and Bmal1 were delayed under all light treatments (BL: + 3.7h, +6.73h; RL: +2.4h,+1.35h; YL: + 4.94h, 2.00h; GL: +0.05, +0.16h). Cry1 showed advanced acrophase under all light treatments (BL: -10.74 h, GL: -3.81 h, RL: -3.93 h, YL: -7.56 h) but Per2 showed delayed acrophase in all light treatments (GL: +0.86 h, RL: +10.35 h, YL: +9.62 h), except in BL (-0.43 h). The acrophase of Aanat2 was advanced by all monochromatic light, the Aanat2 level was significantly increased in RL compared with other light treatment. Therefore, the results indicate that RL may regulate the expression of Aanat2 gene by affecting the expression of clock gene in fish brain. Spectrum can affect the biological clock system of fish, and unreasonable spectrum may disturb the rhythm of gene expression of biological clock of fish. Under the irradiation of light spectrum, some clock genes still maintain obvious circadian oscillation, while the rhythm of some clock genes is not obvious and may be destroyed. Our findings suggest a primary role of light spectrum information to the fish brain circadian system.

Abstract Iron–sulfur clusters are essential cofactors found in all kingdoms of life and play essential roles in fundamental processes, including but not limited to respiration, photosynthesis, and nitrogen fixation. The chemistry of iron–sulfur clusters makes them ideal for sensing various redox environmental signals, while the physics of iron–sulfur clusters and its host proteins have been long overlooked. One such protein, MagR, has been proposed as a putative animal magnetoreceptor. It forms a rod-like complex with cryptochromes (Cry) and possesses intrinsic magnetic moment. However, the magnetism modulation of MagR remains unknown. Here in this study, iron–sulfur cluster binding in MagR has been characterized. Three conserved cysteines of MagR play different roles in iron–sulfur cluster binding. Two forms of iron–sulfur clusters binding have been identified in pigeon MagR and showed different magnetic properties: [3Fe–4S]-MagR appears to be superparamagnetic and has saturation magnetization at 5 K but [2Fe–2S]-MagR is paramagnetic. While at 300 K, [2Fe–2S]-MagR is diamagnetic but [3Fe–4S]-MagR is paramagnetic. Together, the different types of iron–sulfur cluster binding in MagR attribute distinguished magnetic properties, which may provide a fascinating mechanism for animals to modulate the sensitivity in magnetic sensing.

Iron-sulfur proteins play essential roles in a wide variety of cellular processes such as respiration, photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation and magnetoreception. The stability of iron-sulfur clusters varies significantly between anaerobic and aerobic conditions due to their intrinsic sensitivity to oxygen. Iron-sulfur proteins are well suited to various practical applications as molecular redox sensors or molecular “wires” for electron transfer. Various technologies have been developed recently using one particular iron-sulfur protein, MagR, as a magnetic tag. However, the limited protein stability and low magnetic sensitivity of MagR hindered its wide application. Here in this study, the iron-sulfur binding site of pigeon clMagR was rationally re-designed. One such mutation, T57C in pigeon MagR, showed improved iron-sulfur binding efficiency and higher iron content, as well as prolonged thermostability. Thus, clMagRT57C can serve as a prototype for further design of more stable and sensitive magnetic toolbox for magnetogenetics in the future.

To realize nonreciprocal transmission, it is necessary to break the time-reversal symmetry of the transmission system, but it is very challenging to keep the linear polarized (LP) input and output unchanged in the free space transmission system. Magnetized semiconductor InSb can realize terahertz (THz) nonreciprocal transmission for the two conjugated photonic spin states, but it cannot realize efficient one-way transmission of LP state due to gyro-mirror symmetry. In this work, by introducing a pair of orthogonal uniaxial anisotropies from the meta-gratings on both sides of InSb, both the gyro-mirror and time-reversal symmetries are broken for the LP state, thus making this cascaded grating–InSb–grating structure serves as a high-performance isolator for the LP light. The experiment results indicate isolation of 50 dB at 0.4 THz for the same LP input and output under a weak biased magnetic field of 0.17 T. Moreover, we further illustrate the factors affecting the isolation bandwidth of the device, also demonstrated another broadband structure with the 10 dB isolation bandwidth from 0.2–0.7 THz, and the relative bandwidth achieves 110%. The mechanisms of THz nonreciprocal transmission and polarization manipulation proposed in this work will contribute to the development of efficient THz magneto-optical devices.

Polylactide (PLA) is one of the most promising polymers that has been widely used for the repair of damaged tissues due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. PLA composites with multiple properties, such as mechanical properties and osteogenesis, have been widely investigated. Herein, PLA/graphene oxide (GO)/parathyroid hormone (rhPTH(1-34)) nanofiber membranes were prepared using a solution electrospinning method. The tensile strength of the PLA/GO/rhPTH(1-34) membranes was 2.64 MPa, nearly 110% higher than that of a pure PLA sample (1.26 MPa). The biocompatibility and osteogenic differentiation test demonstrated that the addition of GO did not markedly affect the biocompatibility of PLA, and the alkaline phosphatase activity of PLA/GO/rhPTH(1-34) membranes was about 2.3-times that of PLA. These results imply that the PLA/GO/rhPTH(1-34) composite membrane may be a candidate material for bone tissue engineering.

Medium Mn lightweight steels with a relatively higher Mn content of 9–12 wt% have been actively developed recently to meet the demands of crashworthiness and lightweight vehicles. In this study, a combined intensive quenching (IQ) and deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) was first proposed to achieve the microstructural homogeneity as well as the final strength–ductility synergy of medium Mn lightweight steels with Mn segregation bands, together with a comparison with the conventional intercritical annealing. The proposed IQ and DCT process induced the formation of finer large fractioned plate-like martensite in the austenite matrix and thereby contributed to finer and uniform austenite grains after subsequent intercritical annealing. The martensitic transformation rate (dVγ/dε) and transformation kinetics (k value) were used to evaluate the mechanical stability of retained austenite, showing that the D700&750 sample exhibited a similar dVγ/dε value and extremely low k value when compared to the conventional IA650–850 samples, implying that the former had the higher mechanical stability of austenite. The higher mechanical stability of austenite enabled the TRIP effect to occur in a larger strain range, leading to continuous strain hardening behavior. Thus, the highest yield strength (728 MPa) and the largest total elongation of 61.6% were achieved in the D700&750 sample, where the ductility was more than three times higher than that of the conventional IA samples. The grain size and morphologies of retained austenite were believed to be the main factors influencing the strain-hardening behavior of this type of ultrafine lamellar and equiaxed ferrite and austenite duplex structure.

The most popular adult age determination indicators are pubic symphysis, iliac auricular surface, costal cartilage, cranial sutures, teeth, laryngeal cartilage, etc. In recent years, with the progress of CT imaging and 3D reconstruction technology, the adult age determination study gradually has transferred from a time-consuming general observation of bones with complex pre-processing in the past to the non-destructive, convenient, time-saving and easy to store image analysis technology. To explore more accurate, rapid and convenient adult age determination methods, multiple imaging methods and artificial intelligence have been applied in adult age determination. This paper reviews the common methods and research progress of adult age determination at home and abroad, infers the development direction of adult age determination, in order to provide reference for the improvement and optimization of forensic adult age determination.

The best solar conversion efficiencies have been reached thanks to multijunction solar based on III-V semiconductors on GaAs or Ge substrates. While displaying high conversion efficiencies, these solar cells suffer from the high cost of such substrates. To benefit from both the low cost and technological maturity of silicon cells, III-V tandem cells on silicon seem a good compromise to overpass the theoretical efficiency limit of the Si single cells. To study the GaP/Si interface effect on the solar cell characteristic, a GaP n-i-p solar cell has been grown on silicon substrate. Two types of electrical contacts configurations have been processed: a top-top configuration in which the current does not see the GaP/Si interface and the top-bottom configuration where the electric current crosses the interface. A comparison of dark I-V, I-V under solar illumination, and EQE measurements on both configurations is performed. The top-bottom contacts configuration shows an EQE a little bit lower than the top-top contact one, likely due to lower carrier diffusion length or recombination at the lower interface. However, the result on the EQE of the top-bottom configuration is encouraging for the future development of the GaP-based/Si tandem solar cells, and any other tandem cell on silicon using GaP as an intermediate selective contact.

Objective: To systematically review and compare the efficacy and posttreatment resistance of ceftazidime-avibactam therapy and ceftazidime-avibactam-based combination therapy in patients with Gram-negative pathogens.Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, and Wanfang Data databases were searched from their inception up to March 31, 2021, to obtain studies on ceftazidime-avibactam therapy versus ceftazidime-avibactam-based combination therapy in patients with carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative pathogens. The primary outcome was mortality rate, and the second outcomes were microbiologically negative, clinical success, and the development of resistance after ceftazidime-avibactam treatment.Results: Seventeen studies representing 1,435 patients (837 received ceftazidime-avibactam-based combination therapy and 598 received ceftazidime-avibactam therapy) were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that no statistically significant difference was found on mortality rate (Petos odds ratio (OR) = 1.03, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.79–1.34), microbiologically negative (OR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.54–1.81), and clinical success (OR =0.95, 95% CI 0.64–1.39) between ceftazidime-avibactam-based combination therapy and ceftazidime-avibactam therapy. Although there was no difference in posttreatment resistance of ceftazidime-avibactam (OR = 0.65, 95% CI 0.34–1.26) in all included studies, a trend favoring the combination therapy was found (according to the pooled three studies, OR = 0.18, 95% CI 0.04–0.78).Conclusions: The current evidence suggests that ceftazidime-avibactam-based combination therapy may not have beneficial effects on mortality, microbiologically negative, and clinical success to patients with carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative pathogens. A trend of posttreatment resistance occurred more likely in ceftazidime-avibactam therapy than the combination therapy. Due to the limited number of studies that can be included, additional high-quality studies are needed to verify the above conclusions.

The analysis of the basic characteristics of various research methods is highly needed to predict the residual life of the pipeline accurately, help managers understand the operational risks, and provide a reference for developing pipeline transportation and maintenance inspection plans and anti-corrosion measures. Based on a comprehensive investigation of the existing research on the residual life of the pipeline, this paper finds that the current mainstream life prediction method, based on historical statistical data, has the shortcomings of inconsistent modeling methods, inconsistent basic data, and a lack of comparative evaluation among methods. Moreover, considering the in-depth study of BP neural network modeling, grey theory modeling, time series modeling, and exponential smoothing modeling, optimal prediction models using different methods based on the same historical data are established. These optimal modeling methods are discussed, and the feasible modeling path for the accurate prediction of the pipeline’s residual life is given by comparing the prediction accuracy of each model. In addition, the findings serve as a guide for developing an anti-corrosion strategy by highlighting the contribution of the prediction results of the residual life to pipeline decision-making. By comparison, it is found that the accuracy of the four prediction models is as follows: the grey theory prediction model, the exponential smoothing prediction model, the BP neural network prediction model, and the time series prediction model, from high to low, respectively.

Real-time and drift-free state estimation is essential for the flight control of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). Due to the vibration caused by the particular flapping motion and the stringent constraints of scale, weight, and power, state estimation divergence actually becomes an open challenge for flapping wing platforms’ longterm stable flight. Unlike conventional MAVs, the direct adoption of mature state estimation strategies, such as inertial or vision-based methods, has difficulty obtaining satisfactory sensing performance on flapping wing platforms. Inertial sensors offer high sampling frequency but suffer from flapping-introduced oscillation and drift. External visual sensors, such as motion capture systems, can provide accurate feedback but come with a relatively low sampling rate and severe delay. This work proposes a novel state estimation framework to combine the merits from both to address such key sensing challenges of a special flapping wing platform—micro flapping wing rotors (FWRs). In particular, a cross-fusion scheme, which integrates two alternately updated Extended Kalman Filters based on a convex combination, is proposed to tightly fuse both onboard inertial and external visual information. Such a design leverages both the high sampling rate of the inertial feedback and the accuracy of the external vision-based feedback. To address the sensing delay of the visual feedback, a ring buffer is designed to cache historical states for online drift compensation. Experimental validations have been conducted on two sophisticated microFWRs with different actuation and control principles. Both of them show realtime and drift-free state estimation.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of spectral composition on growth, oxidative stress responses, and apoptosis-related gene expression of the shrimp, Penaeus vannamei. Shrimps (wet weight 10.02 ± 0.59 g) were maintained at six different spectral compositions (full spectrum, peak at 400–800 nm; blue, peak at 445 nm; green, peak at 510 nm; yellow, peak at 590 nm; red, peak at 645 nm; and dark) in triplicate tanks for 30 days. The Fry gene, located on chromosome 13, is an evolutionarily conserved large protein from yeast to human. Our previous study genetically linked the Fry gene with differential susceptibility to mammary carcinogenesis, but whether Fry affects mammary gland development and function, as well as the growth of breast cancer cells, is largely unknown. To define the consequences of Fry loss in the mammary glands, we have generated mice conditionally deficient of the Fry gene in the mammary glands using the Cre-loxP recombination system. We examined multiple phenotypes with male and female homozygous Fry conditional knockout mice (Mfry) and control mice (WT), including body weight, preliminary observations (health and neurological flexes), open field locomotion, sensory abilities, auditory threshold, and glucose metabolism. The loss of Fry in the mammary glands didn't cause a significant difference in these genotypes between Mfry and WT mice. However, our data showed that Fry was required during pregnancy, while it was functionally dispensable in virgin mammary gland development. Loss of Fry led to more lateral buds, and the lobuloalveoli were smaller and showed undistended morphology in mammary glands during late pregnancy. in vitro experiment, ectopic expression of FRY could alter the morphology and significantly suppress the growth and proliferation of the breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231 (ER-/PR-/HER2-, Basal-like) and BT474 (ER+/PR+/HER2+, Luminal B). The following genome-wide transcriptomic analysis of these cells suggested that FRY interacted with protein kinases relevant signaling pathways and induced massive changes in gene expression, including the activation of the Hippo/Yap pathway. Together, our data suggest that the FRY is required for mammary glands developments during pregnant periods, and affects breast cancer cell growth and proliferation.

With continued urbanization in China, the construction of urban gas pipelines is increasing, and the safety of gas pipelines are also increasingly affected by urban development and the increased scope of buildings and roads. Pipes with defects are more likely to fail under the surface loads. In this study, uniaxial tensile tests of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes were carried out to obtain the real material parameters of pipe. A pipeline-soil interaction finite element model of HDPE pipeline with defects under surface load was established. The failure mechanism of the urban gas pipeline was studied and the influence of parameters such as internal pressure, defect position, defect depth on the mechanical behavior, and failure of pipelines were analyzed. A failure criterion for HDPE pipes with defects under surface load was proposed based on the limit-state curves obtained under different working conditions. Furthermore, an accurate and efficient fitness-for-service assessment procedure of pipes with defects under surface load was proposed. The results showed that maximum Mises stress of the pipeline gradually increased with increasing surface load and the position of maximum stress changed from the top and bottom of the pipe to the defect position and both sides of the pipe. Finally, when Mises stress of the HDPE pipe exceeds the yield limit, failure will occur. Internal pressure, defect location, and defect depth were found to influence the failure process and critical surface load of the pipeline. Safety evaluation curves of the gas pipeline with defects under surface load were obtained by calculating the critical failure load of the pipeline under various working conditions. Finally, a nonlinear fitting method was used to derive a formula for calculating the critical surface load under different defect parameters. The proposed method provides a useful reference for urban gas pipeline safety management.

The Xinliaodong copper-polymetallic deposit of Eastern Guangdong Province is one of newly discovered deposits. The ore district belongs to tin, tungsten, and copper ore cluster in the southeast coast, which have a very good ore-forming geological conditions. Chalcopyrite has δ65Cu value ranging from-0.34‰ to +1.37‰, which is consistent with δ65Cu value of porphyry deposits, indicating that ore-forming material Cu was derived from deep magma and ore-forming fluids were medium-high-temperature (250-420℃) magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. There is a close relationship between the fractionation of Cu isotope and magmatic hydrothermal activity. The formation of ore body is related to the dissolution of ore-forming fluids. With the increase of depth, there is atrend of increasing δ65Cu value, indicating a potential of a largee orebody. Copper isotope can directly indicate the location of the heat source. The δ65Cu values are below 0 for copper ore bodies close to the hydrothermal quartz veins.But the copper isotope values are higher in the hydrothermal contact zone, special ore-bearing surrounding rock and tectonic zone where indicates the edge or the front of the main ore body, most obvious ore prospecting mark.

A new class of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) is introduced in this article, which is driven by the generalized stochastic mixed variational inequality (GS-MVI). First, the property of the solution sets of the GS-MVI is proved by Fan-Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz (FKKM) theorem and Aumann’s measurable selection theorem. Next, we obtain the Carathéodory property of the solution set, with which the discussed SDEs can be transformed to stochastic differential inclusions (SDIs). The solution set of the proposed SDEs is proved to be nonempty through the existence of the solutions of the corresponding SDIs by the tools of fixed point theorem.

In view of the problems such as rising cost, period delay, and quality decline caused by difficult transportation of wind power equipment, in the early road survey process, AutoTURN and theoretical formulas are employed to adjust the turn radius and the road widening value before discussing the technical requirements of the transportation scheme. On the premise of ensuring the safety of transportation firstly, the analytic hierarchy process(AHP) is introduced to analyze and evaluate the corresponding transportation route alternatives, and to seek the optimal route scheme with good performance with higher economy and timeliness. With the wind power equipment transportation in a certain place as an example, AutoTURN is used to assist the optimization of the road curve parameters of the transportation scheme, and the optimal transportation route is obtained after evaluation of the scheme through the AHP. The optimization method of transportation scheme design can not only reduce the project cost but provide a certain reference basis for improving the management level of transportation activities.

Much research describes gut microbiota in atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) for that the composition of the intestinal microbiome or its metabolites can directly participate in the development of endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and its adverse complications. Salidroside, a natural phenylpropane glycoside, exhibits promising biological activity against the progression of ASCVD. Recent studies suggested that the gut microbiota played a crucial role in mediating the diverse beneficial effects of salidroside on health. Here, we describe the protective effects of salidroside against the progression of atherosclerosis. Salidroside regulates the abundance of gut microbiotas and gut microbe-dependent metabolites. Moreover, salidroside improves intestinal barrier function and maintains intestinal epithelial barrier function integrity. In addition, salidroside attenuates the inflammatory responses exacerbated by gut microbiota disturbance. This review delves into how salidroside functions to ameliorate atherosclerosis by focusing on its interaction with gut microbiota, uncovering the potential roles of gut microbiota in the diverse biological impacts of salidroside.

Background In recent years, with the increase of academic pressure, it is common for high school students to stay up late, eat and rest irregularly, leading to gradually increased yearly incidence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in this population. IBS has a long course, long-term recurrent symptoms and unsatisfactory treatment effects, seriously affecting patients' quality of life, and causing socioeconomic burden of IBS. Objective To examine the prevalence, epidemiology, and risk factors of IBS in senior high school students, to provide a scientific basis for formulating practical and feasible IBS treatment plans for this group. Methods An epidemiological questionnaire survey was conducted with acluster random sample of senior high school students in Shanghai, Qinghai, Henan and Macao from July to August in 2020. The questionnaire includes demographic information, the prevalence of IBS, mental health, sleep habits, living habits and other relevant information. The Rome Ⅳ Criteria for IBS were used to diagnose IBS. The Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) was used to assess mental problems and symptoms. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. SPSS 21.0 was used for the analysis of risk factors of IBS. Results A total of 5 046 cases attended the survey, 4 793 (95.00%) of them who returned effective questionnaires were included for final analysis. The prevalence of IBS was 4.50% (217/4 793) . It was found that higher grade, depression, anxiety, sensitive interpersonal relationships, eating spicy food, skipping meals, drinking alcohol, excessively bright and noisy sleep environment, poor and very poor sleep quality, sleeping latency≥ 15 min, sleeping time per night ≤7 h, taking hypnotic drugs, daytime disturbance and total PSQI score ≥7 points were associated with increased risks of IBS (P

Taking the upper sub-member of Sha 4 in Well Fanye 1 and Well Niuye 1 in Dongying Sag, Jiyang Depression, Bohai Bay Basin as a typical example, this paper adopts the method of combining macro and micro laminar characterization and complementing each other. The characteristics of laminar development are studied by means of fine description of rock thin sections by cores and electron microscopic observation Reconstruction of the Bohai Bay Basin in sand four period of ancient sedimentary environment, it is concluded that the sand on the four period of development of four complete filling sedimentary cycle. Using Milankovitch cycles method, reveals the ancient climate control mechanism of lithofacies, formed by organic laminae under hot and humid climate and a small amount of calcite laminated lithofacies, in hot and humid climate, the lithofacies is mainly composed of organic lamina and a small amount of calcite lamina, while in cold and dry climate, the lithofacies is mainly composed of calcite lamina, and the lithofacies is mainly composed of organic lamina, silty lamina and gypsum lamina. Micro-laminar research is an important scientific issue in unconventional oil and gas eology. It can provide basic data for unconventional oil and gas exploration, such as the types, distribution and extension of laminar, especially the determination of sampling targets. Different laboratory samples can be analyzed according to the laminar types.

Proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is a proprotein convertase that increases plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels by triggering the degradation of LDL receptors (LDLRs). Beyond the regulation of circulating LDL-C, PCSK9 also has direct atherosclerotic effects on the vascular wall and is associated with coronary plaque inflammation. Interestingly, emerging data show that women have higher circulating PCSK9 concentrations than men, suggesting that the potential roles of PCSK9 may have different impacts according to sex. In this review, we summarize the studies concerning sex difference in circulating levels of PCSK9. In addition, we report on the sex differences in the relations of elevated circulating PCSK9 levels to the severity and prognosis of coronary artery disease, the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and neurological damage after cardiac arrest and liver injury, as well as inflammatory biomarkers and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Moreover, sex difference in the clinical efficacy of PCSK9 inhibitors application are reviewed. Finally, the underlying mechanisms of sex difference in circulating PCSK9 concentrations and the clinical implications are also discussed.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) promotes tumorigenesis and metastasis and increases tumor tolerance to treatment intervention. Abnormal activation of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) and Wnt pathway induces EMT. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) significantly influence EMT regulation. Herein, we show that MIR210HG is overexpressed in endometrial cancer tissues, which is associated with poor prognosis. MIR210HG silencing significantly inhibited proliferation, migration, invasion, and EMT phenotype formation in vitro as well as tumorigenesis in vivo. Mechanistically, bioinformatics analyses, RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays, and luciferase assays showed that MIR210HG acts as a molecular sponge of miR-337-3p and miR-137 to regulate the expression of HMGA2. Additionally, MIR210HG overexpression significantly enriched the Wnt/β-catenin and TGF-β/Smad3 signaling pathway genes, while MIR210HG or HMGA2 knockdown suppressed the Wnt/β-catenin and TGF-β/Smad3 signaling pathway. Our findings on the MIR210HG-miR-337-3p/137-HMGA2 axis illustrate its potential as a target for endometrial cancer therapeutic development.

Summary: Background: Emerging vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) pose a continuous background threat to the global health. Knowledge of the occurrence, distributions and epidemiological characteristics of VBP are lacking in many countries. Outbreaks of novel VBP are of increasing global interest including those arising in China. Methods: A systematic review of published literature was undertaken to characterize the spectrum of VBPs causing human illness in China. We searched five databases for VBP-related articles in English and Chinese published between January 1980 and June 2021, that excluded those listed in the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System of China. The study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42021259540. Findings: A total of 906 articles meeting the selection criteria were included in this study. A total of 44,809 human infections with 82 species of VBPs including 40 viruses, 33 bacteria (20 Rickettsiales bacteria, eight Spirochaetales bacteria, and five other bacteria) and nine parasites, were identified in China. Rickettsiales bacteria were the most common and widely distributed pathogens with 18,042 cases reported in 33 provinces by 347 reviewed articles, followed by Spirochaetales bacteria with 15,745 cases in 32 provinces (299 articles), viruses with 8455 cases in 30 provinces (139 articles), other bacteria with 2053 cases in 19 provinces (65 articles), parasites with 514 cases in 17 provinces (44 articles), and multiple pathogens with 3626 cases in 14 provinces (23 articles). Coxiella burnetii, Bartonella henselae and Rickettsia sibirica were the most frequently reported pathogens. A total of 18 new pathogens were reported in China during this period (these also represented their first identification globally). Based on 419 articles with clinical information, a meta-analysis revealed that flu-like illness was the most common manifestation among infections with VBPs. Interpretation: This review helps improve the understanding of VBPs in China, demonstrating the need to consider a wider surveillance of VBPs in many different settings, thus helping to inform future research and surveillance efforts.
