Abstract Quantitative ecosystem‐based management typically relies on hypothetical ecosystem models that are difficult to validate for all but the best‐studied systems. Here, we develop a management scheme that is based on predictive models driven by the observed dynamics. We show that near‐optimal management policies can be constructed from time‐series data by merging empirical dynamic modelling and stochastic dynamic programming. The Empirical Dynamic Programming approach performs well in cases we examined and outperformed a commonly used single‐species alternative. We expect model‐free ecosystem‐based management to be of use wherever ecosystem dynamics are uncertain or observations of the system do not cover all relevant species.

Wetlands provide resources, regulate the environment, and stabilize shorelines; however, they are among the most vulnerable ecosystems in the world. The classification of mangrove species allows the determination of the habitat of each species, thereby serving as a basis for determining protection solutions and planning plans for mangrove conservation and restoration according to each environmental condition. We used Phantom 4 multispectral unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect data from wetland areas in the Dong Rui Commune, which is one of the most diverse and valuable wetland ecosystems in northern Vietnam. A tree-species classification map was constructed through a combination of the object-based image analysis method and spectral reflectance values of each plant species, and the characteristic distributions of mangrove plants, including Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora stylosa, and Kandelia obovata, were determined with an overall accuracy of 91.11 % and a kappa coefficient (K) of 0.87. The overall accuracy for Rhizophora stylosa was the highest (94.23 %), followed by Kandelia obovata (93.61 %) and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (85.50 %). An experiment was conducted to map plant taxonomy in the same area based only on a graph of spectral reflectance values at five single-spectral bands, and normalized difference vegetation index values were constructed, resulting in an overall accuracy of 78.22 % and a K of 0.67. The constructed map is useful for classifying, monitoring, and evaluating the structure of each group of mangroves, thereby serving as a basis for determining the distribution of each mangrove species according to natural conditions and contributing to the formulation of policies for afforestation and mangrove conservation in Dong Rui commune.

Estuarine ecosystems are threatened by numerous anthropogenic pressures. Fish assemblages are a dominant component of estuarine macrofauna and serve as indicators for the health of these transitional water ecosystems. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is increasingly used to assess the biodiversity of fishes in estuaries. However, there is a need to further establish how effective eDNA metabarcoding can be relative to conventional fish sampling methods across multiple estuaries and seasons. This study compared fish assemblages detected via eDNA metabarcoding of surface water samples to contemporary sampling with conventional fishing gears in three temperate estuaries (UK), during early summer and autumn. Most species caught by fishing were detected by eDNA. Species richness estimates from eDNA were two to ten times higher than estimates based on fishing, and included taxa of conservation importance and a non-native species. The eDNA assemblage composition was significantly different to the assemblage detected by seine nets. Importantly, eDNA methods could effectively discriminate between fish assemblages of different estuaries and seasons. Fish assemblages in estuaries are often not monitored due to resource constraints. The dynamic nature of estuaries may make fishing gear deployment difficult and inconsistent. The findings indicate that eDNA metabarcoding is suited to gathering large amounts of information on fish biodiversity, at a relatively low sampling effort, compared to established fishing methods. Therefore, eDNA shows promise as an assessment tool for fish assemblage structure and ecosystem health in estuarine environments, with application to statutory monitoring.

This study investigates the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in monitoring and managing marine ecosystems to address the impacts of climate change on Kenya’s Blue Economy. It aims to assess the threats posed by climate change to these ecosystems and explore the potential of AI solutions to enhance adaptation and resilience. The research employs a comprehensive review of secondary data sources, including academic publications, reports from reputable institutions, and other relevant materials. The study analyzes existing literature on AI applications in marine ecosystem management and climate change mitigation, focusing on the specific context of Kenya’s Blue Economy. The study reveals that climate change poses significant threats to Kenya’s marine ecosystems, including coral bleaching, ocean acidification, sea-level rise, and disruptions to ocean currents. AI technologies offer promising solutions for monitoring and managing these impacts, with applications in predictive modeling, resource optimization, and decision support. The research highlights the need for further exploration into specific AI applications tailored to Kenya’s unique coastal challenges and the importance of incorporating diverse stakeholder perspectives. Additionally, it emphasizes the necessity for long-term impact assessments of AI technologies in the context of climate change mitigation. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on AI applications in environmental management, particularly within the context of Kenya’s Blue Economy. By identifying the potential of AI to enhance resilience and sustainability in marine ecosystems, the research offers valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners involved in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Climate change and anthropogenic activities are reshaping dryland ecosystems globally at an unprecedented pace, jeopardizing their stability. The stability of these ecosystems is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and supporting local communities. Yet, the mechanisms governing their stability are poorly understood, largely due to the scarcity of comprehensive field data. Here we show the patterns of community temporal stability and its determinants across an aridity spectrum by integrating a transect survey across China's drylands with remote sensing. Our results revealed a U-shaped relationship between community temporal stability and aridity, with a pivotal shift occurring around an aridity level of 0.88. In less arid areas (aridity level below 0.88), enhanced precipitation and biodiversity were associated with increased community productivity and stability. Conversely, in more arid zones (aridity level above 0.88), elevated soil organic carbon and biodiversity were linked to greater fluctuations in community productivity and reduced stability. Our study identifies a critical aridity threshold that precipitates significant changes in community stability in China's drylands, underscoring the importance of distinct mechanisms driving ecosystem stability in varying aridity contexts. These insights are pivotal for developing informed ecosystem management and policy strategies tailored to the unique challenges of dryland conservation.

Ecosystem restoration, as a core strategy for implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS), inherently aligns with NbS principles. Despite significant progress in biodiversity conservation and restoration, China still faces risks of ecosystem degradation. To maximize the potential of NbS in China's restoration efforts, it is crucial to develop a framework rooted in NbS principles. However, the application of NbS is hindered by weak theoretical foundations and a lack of comprehensive case studies. This study integrated NbS principles with key theoretical concepts, including sustainable development, socio-ecological systems, ecosystem services, biodiversity, restoration ecology, natural capital, and ecological products, to develop a NbS-based theoretical framework for ecosystem restoration. Drawing on insights from the ''Generation Restoration'' report, we synthesized representative practices across various Chinese ecosystems, including farmlands, forests, freshwater, grasslands, oceans, coasts, peatlands and urban areas. Our study provides both a theoretical foundation and practical guidance for integrating NbS into ecosystem restoration, aiming to enhance conservation efforts and promote sustainable development in China.

Coastal lagoons are valuable ecosystems, providing socioeconomic benefits and supporting human populations and biodiversity. However, these systems face several challenges, making them vulnerable to both natural and human factors. In this study, we apply the Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) Approach to conduct a comprehensive socioeconomic and environmental assessment of the Khenifiss Lagoon to promote sustainable development and support decision-makers. Located on the southern Atlantic coast of Morocco, the lagoon was designated a natural reserve in 1962, a biological reserve in 1983, and a protected wetland under the Ramsar Convention since 1980. This study represents the initial endeavor to conduct a comprehensive global and multidisciplinary environmental assessment of the lagoon by using a wide range of data sources, including relevant publications and reports, satellite images and remote sensing data, field observations, and interviews, all analyzed under the DPSIR framework. Our findings show that both natural and human factors have an impact on the ecosystem. Natural Factors associated with the geomorphological features of the region likely contribute to the silting of the lagoon, possibly intensified by a large shipwreck stuck at its inlet. Meanwhile, human factors encompass population growth (at a rate of 2% per year), tourism, shellfish farming, fishing, shellfish harvesting, and salt extraction. Our results reveal significant changes in the lagoon’s condition in recent years, including a reduction in water body extent, a probable decrease in depth, and an increase in the accumulation of solid waste, plastics, and wastewater in three sectors spanning a total surface area of 464 ha (equivalent to 7% of the lagoon), a substantial expansion of the salt mining area encompassing 368 ha, and a remarkable loss of biodiversity, manifested in declining fish stocks and seabird populations. This study showed that the lagoon is positioned as a potential site for economic growth and serves to alert stakeholders and the local population to the ecosystem’s environmental issues. Based on the findings of this study, we highly recommend regulating human activities within the lagoon, the removal of the wreck at the entrance, proper waste management, community awareness programs, and strict monitoring and enforcement of regulations to protect the environment.

Mapping the demand for ecosystem services (ES) is a profoundly debated research topic that needs to be investigated further to overcome spatial discrepancies between supply and demand in the literature. This study proposes a holistic approach to valuing ES, which is demanded by local people living adjacent to Sabah’s protected area in the southwestern part of Sabah, Malaysia. To assess the local people's demand for ecosystem services, we applied the 'ES Matrix Assessment' method. Timber, global climate regulation, recreation, and ecotourism are selected to illustrate the changes in ES demand patterns reported in the Klias Peninsula region. To identify the ES required by local people based on land-cover type, we used a weighted arithmetic mean approach. Then, using multiple regressions, we identified socio-demographic characteristics that influence demand for ES obtained from the Klias Peninsula's tropical forest. The 6-point Likert scale results showed that timber received medium (3) to highly relevant demand (4) among local people in the forest ecosystem, while climate regulation demand was the most highly relevant demand (5) in the forest ecosystem, and recreation and ecotourism are highly demanded in the forest ecosystem and water-based area. Overall, ethnicity, source(s) of income, distance from the protected area, length of residence, and education level have influenced the population's perception of ecosystem service demand in peat swamp forest, mangrove, and forest land, and these factors are statistically significant at the 1% to 5% levels. Our approach possesses the advantage of being intuitively straightforward, making it easy to convey to stakeholders and decision-makers across various ecosystem service (ES) applications. Therefore, our approach, while relatively simple, remains realistic and easy to apply, effectively raising awareness about the utility of the ecosystem services concept for stakeholders and policymakers.

As agricultural production increases, the use of chemical fertilisers, herbicides, and other synthetic pesticides has equally increased over the years. Inadequate pesticide application description and monitoring has generated a heated debate among governmental organisations, agricultural industries, and conservation organisations about pesticide effects on insect species richness and abundance. This review is therefore aimed at summarizing the decline in insects’ species and individual numbers as a result of extensive pesticide utilisation and recommends possible management strategies for its mitigation. This review revealed an average pesticide application of 1.58 kg per ha per year, 0.37 kg per person per year, and 0.79 kg per USD 1000 per year. Insects have experienced a greater species abundance decline than birds, plants, and other organisms, which could pose a significant challenge to global ecosystem management. Although other factors such as urbanisation, deforestation, monoculture, and industrialisation may have contributed to the decline in insect species, the extensive application of agro-chemicals appears to cause the most serious threat. Therefore, the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly management strategies is critical for mitigating insect species’ decline.

With the changing demands imposed on forests by human beings, optimizing forest management to fully utilize their multifunctionality has become a priority. Reasonable forest management measures can maintain stable forest ecosystems that fully coordinate the balance between ecological, societal, and economic aspects. As planted forests are the main application scenario of forest management worldwide, it is of great importance to understand the trade-offs between ecosystem functions and their dynamic changes in planted forests. This paper investigates the effects of different management measures on the ecosystem function of Pinus massoniana plantation forests in the subtropics. It examines four different management measures and explores how they impact multiple ecosystem function indexes and the trade-offs between ecosystem functions during forest restoration. The different management measures effectively promoted the studied ecosystem functions, with higher annual growth rates of the integrated functional indices for timber production, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity compared to the control. Over time, the ecosystem function interactions under the different management measures alternated between trade-offs and synergistic. Only the stand with a 65% harvesting intensity and replanting of various native broadleaf species was able to sustain the synergistic relationships among ecosystem functions, and the dominant function trended toward biodiversity. These observations of dynamic changes and interactions in ecosystem functions of Pinus massoniana plantation forests under various management measures will serve as a valuable reference for the sustainable management of these forests in subtropical regions.

Island forests are becoming increasingly fragmented and colonized by invasive species, which can eventually lead to local species extinctions. In the Galapagos Islands, invasive species pose a serious extinction threat to the endemic daisy tree Scalesia pedunculata, formerly the dominant habitat-forming species of the unique Scalesia forest. This forest has been reduced to fragments due to land use changes in the past and is now increasingly invaded by introduced plants. We conducted a field experiment on Santa Cruz Island to assess the impacts of blackberry (Rubus niveus) and two other invasive plant species, Cestrum auriculatum and Tradescantia fluminensis, as well as the effects of the removal of two of these (R. niveus and C. auriculatum) on cover, composition and diversity of the resident plant communities. Particular attention was paid to effects of the invasive species on the S. pedunculata population. Annual vegetation monitoring was carried out in a total of 34 permanent plots (10 m × 10 m) over 10 years (2014–2023), using the line-intercept method. Seventeen of these plots were established in an invaded area and 17 plots in an area with continuous invasive plant removal since 2014. Results indicated that there were significant changes in both the species composition of the plant communities and average percent cover of species over time, comparing removal plots with invaded plots. Species composition in removal plots changed significantly more than in invaded plots, towards a plant community with greater percent cover of endemic species. A significant negative relationship between the three invasive species and cover of S. pedunculata suggested that multiple invader species may have additive negative impacts. Natural recruitment of S. pedunculata by seeds was observed in the removal but not in the invaded plots. These results, as well as the striking decrease of 71% in cover of adult S. pedunculata in the invaded plots indicate that this threatened species will be driven to local extinction on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos, in less than 20 years if invasive plant species are not removed on a large scale.

Abstract Often there are several complex ecosystem models available to address a specific question. However, structural differences, systematic discrepancies and uncertainties mean that they typically produce different outputs. Rather than selecting a single ‘best’ model, it is desirable to combine them to give a coherent answer to the question at hand. Many methods of combining ecosystem models assume that one of the models is exactly correct, which is unlikely to be the case. Furthermore, models may not be fitted to the same data, have the same outputs, nor be run for the same time period, making many common methods difficult to implement. In this paper, we use a statistical model to describe the relationship between the ecosystem models, prior beliefs and observations to make coherent predictions of the true state of the ecosystem with robust quantification of uncertainty. We introduce EcoEnsemble, an R package that takes advantage of the statistical model's structure to efficiently fit the ensemble model, either sampling from the posterior distribution or maximising the posterior density. We demonstrate EcoEnsemble by investigating what would happen to four fish species in the North Sea under future management scenarios. Although developed for applications in ecology, EcoEnsemble can be used to combine any group of mechanistic models, for example in climate modelling, epidemiology or biology.

The negative consequences faced by the entire planet, the intensification of natural disasters, global warming, lowering the level of groundwater, deforestation, deterioration of corals and the underwater world, soil degradation, and the change of species diversity, testify to the necessity of introducing reforms in the agricultural-food complex. Fulfilling such a goal and creating added value of innovation potential can only be created in the conditions of functioning structures strengthened by system support, which requires reviewing and introducing change in food systems. The recent financial crisis, later the pandemic, and the current going military conflict in Ukraine, caused problems in supplier-customer relations, and made humanity feel how the issue of food security and self-sufficiency can be easily and quickly disrupted. If farmers and food producers are to be able to respond to challenges and at the same time ensure the EU's strategic goals, it is necessary to have support in research and innovation. Agricultural research and innovation in the EU is characterised by a long-term strategic approach that focuses on creating value from the land through sustainable primary production and strengthening rural innovation. It is an important tool in the fight against challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss. In view of the above, it is necessary to transform food systems, apply regenerative agriculture, introduce alternative land-saving farming systems, observe the principles of sowing procedures and greater diversification of crops in the sowing procedure, reduce the consumption of agrochemicals, naturally integrate plant and animal production into agricultural business entities in relation to the circular economy, use farm waste for bioenergy production, protect agricultural land, implement measures to retain water in the country and support regions

Abstract Amid Earth's ongoing sixth mass extinction event, numerous measures have been proposed to recover the populations of species at risk of extinction. However, the methods and objectives of different species' recovery plans sometimes conflict with each other, causing a conundrum we refer to as recovery–action antagonism. Recovery–action antagonism reduces the cost‐effectiveness of conservation programs and can increase the extinction risk of nontarget species. We describe a method to identify interactions between recovery actions, including antagonisms proposed for different at‐risk species in a given location. The method includes a process to evaluate potential drivers of recovery‐action antagonism and other interaction types using principal coordinates analysis and distance‐based redundancy analysis. We illustrate various applications of the method through case studies performed in Pelee Island and Rouge National Urban Park, two biodiverse areas in Ontario, Canada. Potential antagonism was identified between 1.5% (Pelee) and 5% (Rouge) of the evaluated recovery actions. Although the rate of antagonism was low in our case studies, the method allows the identification of a variety of interactions, which can help to prioritize similar and complementary actions that will benefit a large number of species while minimizing actions that may have competing outcomes.

Ecosystem-based management is mandated by international legislation, including the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in the EU. This introduces a requirement for marine environments to achieve “Good Environmental Status” or GES, implying that the ecosystem is in a healthy and biodiverse state which does not limit the management options of future generations. Indicators of GES typically refer to the current or past state; however, an alternative approach that defines GES in terms of being able to recover to the appropriate reference unperturbed state within 30 years if human activities cease has been suggested. In this study we evaluate this “longest recovery timescales” (LRT) approach using the StrathE2E2 “big picture” model, an end-to-end ecosystem model designed to evaluate both top-down and bottom-up effects at an ecosystem level. We ask whether the approach is enough to prevent severe depletion as well as ensuring recovery at some future time. We also ask whether implementation is practical given uncertainties in defining appropriate baselines for recovery, defining what recovery looks like relative to this baseline, and taking account of natural variability. We find that the main issues with implementation of LRT are a) defining the appropriate baseline for recovery in a changing environment, and b) ensuring that there is stakeholder acceptance of any recommended actions in the event that they differ substantially from current policy. Subject to these two issues, we conclude that the LRT method is a valuable addition to management in support of achieving GES alongside existing methods that focus on current or near-future states.

Aquatic ecosystem restoration is a crucial aspect of ecological management. However, current research tends to concentrate on single factors, such as water quality or biodiversity, rather than ecological restoration strategies based on the characteristics of an ecological network system. Due to the large number of parameters to be considered, the latter approach presents still full of challenges in practical implementation. This study introduces a food web dynamic model that can guide and facilitate aquatic ecological network restoration. The model calculates the network-based interaction relationships of species in the food web, predicting the changes in ecosystem structure and function. We test our food web model by conducting a case study. The food web considered 9 kinds of species nodes, 12 links, and 1 uncertain predator–prey interaction. Our model simulations presented a strong correlation with the measured data (R2 = 0.837). We performed sensitivity analysis on 12 parameters and also conducted link prediction analysis, which revealed that there was no predator–prey relationship between species A and N (A + N = 0). By comparing population dynamics under 3 conditions, we determined that the mass reproduction of nonnative species and the population decline of native species were both related to indirect food web interactions. Finally, we comprised 27 scenarios, including fishing and stock enhancement approaches, to predict the potential restoration effects. The results showed that the fishing approach was more effective in removing alien species when the fishing frequency was shorter. It was also found that selecting catches and releasing native or endangered species back into the environment (F4, F5, F6, and F12) was necessary. On the other hand, the stock enhancement approach was concluded to be effective in increasing the number of native species as long as the frequency of enhancement was high (per 1 year, S1, S2, and S3). However, it was found to be challenging to rely on this approach to reduce the population of nonnative species. This research will enhance the previous studies in terms of (a) including whole species interactions in the ecological network; (b) considering the influence of abiotic factors, such as water quality, terrigenous carrying capacity, shoreline substrate, and hydrological connection in our model; and (c) coupling significant parameters in ecological restoration practices. This research will provide a valuable tool for managing aquatic ecological networks and decision-making suggestions for determining restoration schemes in complex aquatic food webs.

In the Mediterranean basin, the structure and species composition of traditional landscapes have historically been shaped and maintained by human-driven disturbances, such as extensive livestock grazing. The cessation of these activities, which have partially replaced the role of natural disturbances, may lead to vegetation overgrowth and biomass accumulation, with potential adverse impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem functions and services. Recently, the use of livestock for ecosystem management, with the purpose of maintaining grazing disturbance and the associated ecosystem processes, has been gaining traction. Nevertheless, there is still limited evidence on the performance of such grazing interventions. This review assesses the state of the art regarding the use of livestock for ecosystem management in Mediterranean landscapes. It examines the association between the regime and duration of grazing interventions and their reported effects on ecosystems. The list of reviewed interventions (68 interventions, retrieved from 47 studies) covered a diverse range of landcover systems (from grasslands to forests), of grazing regimes (characterized by different levels of grazing intensity and livestock species), and of duration of grazing (from short-term, < 5 years to long-term grazing, > 20 years). Wildfire prevention and biomass control, biodiversity and habitat conservation and the regulation of soil quality are the main reasons for the use of grazing interventions. The results of this review suggest that the use of domestic herbivores in ecosystem management can contribute to wildfire prevention and biomass control, with these positive effects fading away in long-term grazing interventions. Goats seem to perform better than cattle for biomass control. The effects on biodiversity and habitat conservation depend on the grazing regime, with intensive grazing showing negative results, while the effects on soil quality are generally negative but require further assessment, due to data limitations.

Environmental protection and safety are at the forefront of Russia's national policies in the Arctic. This region is becoming increasingly internationalized and turning into a major point of interest for world powers and transnational companies, which makes environmental policy an important aspect of geopolitical competition. Environmental policy design should be based on current scientific approaches. This study aims to identify and compare the most important topics and theoretical concepts that underlie environmental policy in Russia and abroad. The methodological approach used was semi-systematic (narrative) bibliographic analysis, which involved selecting and analyzing one hundred most-cited Russian and international studies on environmental policy issues. The study identified the key issues discussed and theoretical as well as methodological approaches used by domestic and foreign researchers in the study of environmental policy. The results of the analysis and comparison were evaluated in the context of their relevance to the challenges associated with Russia's state policy imperatives in the Arctic.

This study examines the application of the concept developed in the last decade, namely the Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture (EAA). This approach balances social goals with human state and their interactions with ecosystem. The EAA is a strategy for integrating activities within the wider ecosystem in such a way that it promotes sustainable development, equity, and resilience of interlinked social and ecological systems. Case studies in three locations, namely Pinrang, Aceh Besar and South Lampung, were conducted to draw lessons in order to formulate a general framework for wider application in this country. The potential application of the concept was examined based on the following aspects: (i) ecosystem sustainability, (ii) justice welfare, and (iii) good governance. Data were collected through surveys guided with previously designed questionnaires, invlolving 179 respondents selected purposively from exixting shrimp cultivator. Data were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) using the Stata software. Results showed that there was a difference between weights determined in the technical guidelines and those resulting from PCA, which was indicated by various existing conditions in research location. This is a significant finding that is relevant in in developing EAA in Indonesia.

Abstract Mountain landscapes that are managed to provide several ecosystem services (ES) have the potential to sustain high levels of biodiversity while also meeting multiple human needs. The promotion of multifunctional landscapes has become an important policy target in land management and has gained research traction under the definition of ES‐multifunctionality. However, scale dynamics and patterns of ES‐multifunctionality remain poorly understood and are rarely integrated into land management and policy recommendations. To address this gap, we used two diversity indices to quantify ES‐multifunctionality based on 11 ES indicators at different spatial scales in a case‐study region in the European Alps. The approach used captures the diversity of ES provided at patch and landscape levels (α‐multifunctionality) as well as unique ES contributions of ecosystems to the regional ES diversity (β‐multifunctionality). Results show that ES‐multifunctionality generally decreases from low to high land use intensities and increases from high to low elevations. While forest‐dominated landscapes are hotspots of ES diversity, the more specialized ES supply in landscapes above the tree line and on valley floors enhances regional ES‐multifunctionality. This study highlights how understanding ES‐multifunctionality and its incorporation into policy and landscape management requires adopting a multi‐scale approach. Patch‐scale analyses are necessary to identify the environmental characteristics underpinning ES‐multifunctionality with a fine level of detail. However, looking at the distribution of ES at landscape and regional scales uncovers the benefits originating from interacting ecosystems, and can support the identification of areas that should be protected, restored, or sustainably managed.

The Guadalquivir estuary (southern Spain) occasionally experiences medium to high turbidity, reaching above 700 Formazin Nephelometric Unit (FNU) during extreme events, thus negatively influencing its nursery function and the estuarine community structure. Although several turbidity algorithms are available to monitor water quality, they are mainly developed for mapping turbidity ranges of 0-100 FNU. Thus, their use in a highly turbid region may not give accurate results, which is crucial for estuarine ecosystem management. To fill this gap, we developed a multi-conditional turbidity algorithm that can retrieve turbidity from 0 to 600 FNU using the Sentinel-2 red and red-edge bands. Four major steps are implemented: atmospheric and sun glint correction of the Level-1C Sentinel-2 data, spectral analysis for different water turbidity levels, regression modelling between in situ turbidity and remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) for algorithm development, and validation of the best-suited model. When turbidity was < 85 FNU, the Rrs increased firstly in the red wavelength (665 nm), but it saturated beyond a certain turbidity threshold (> 250 FNU). At this time, Rrs started to increase in the red-edge wavelength (704 nm). Considering this spectral behavior, our algorithm is designed to automatically select the most sensitive turbidity vs. Rrs, thus avoiding the saturation effects of the red bands at high turbidity levels. The model showed good agreement between the satellite derived turbidity and the in situ measurements with a correlation coefficient of 0.97, RMSE of 15.93 FNU, and a bias of 13.34 FNU. Turbidity maps derived using this algorithm can be used for routine turbidity monitoring and assessment of potential anthropogenic actions (e.g., dredging activities), thus helping the decision-makers and relevant stakeholders to protect coastal resources and human health.

In areas highly affected by anthropogenic disturbances, artificial (human-made) freshwater ecosystems can provide habitat for maintaining and conserving regional freshwater biodiversity. We assessed how the physical habitat of artificial ponds affected the structure of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. To do so, we tested two hypotheses. (1) Physical habitat disturbances are not detrimental to the diversity of nearby artificial ponds, and (2) Physical habitat disturbances do not cause significant shifts in taxonomic composition. Our results rejected both null hypotheses, i.e., macroinvertebrate diversity metrics correlated significantly and positively with Physical Habitat Integrity index scores, and only sites with high habitat condition scores were significantly associated with sensitive indicator taxa. Our results highlight the importance of maintaining physical habitat conditions for sustaining the ecological health of artificial ponds.

The trade-offs of ecosystem services (ES) are at the frontier of geographical and ecological studies. However, previous studies have focused on either supply-supply trade-off or supply–demand trade-off, while the integrated research of three trade-off types for ES (i.e. supply-supply trade-off, demand-demand trade-off, and supply–demand trade-off) needs to be further studied. This study integrated three trade-off types for ES to establish an analytical framework. This framework was then applied to a sub-watershed of the Yellow River in China (i.e., the Fenghe River watershed). Based on a quantitative assessment of both the supply and demand of ES, this study quantifies and displays these three trade-off types for ES in this sub-watershed. From the supply perspective, obvious trade-offs exist between food provision as well as water yield, carbon sequestration, and soil retention. From the demand perspective, there are weak conflicts between environmental experts and other stakeholders, and obvious trade-offs exist between soil retention as well as food provision, water yield, carbon sequestration, and eco-recreation. From the supply–demand match perspective, a deficit for food provision, water yield, and carbon sequestration exists in the northern urban areas, while a surplus exists in the southern areas. No deficit was found for soil retention and eco-recreation at the sub-watershed scale. Based on the spatial characteristics of these three trade-off types for ES, the Fenghe River watershed could be divided into 10 land use management zones. Finally, the corresponding measures and polices are proposed to optimize the matching of ES supply–demand. This study contributes to the optimization of the sustainability of ES from a novel perspective, and provides a scientific basis for land use management.

The degradation of natural ecosystems triggers global environmental, economic, and social problems. To prevent this, it is necessary to identify the aptitude of priority areas for conservation or use by considering land fragility from multiple environmental and spatial perspectives. We applied the concept of environmental fragility to a hydrographic basin in southeastern Brazil that establishes (i) potential fragility levels according to slope, soil classes, geological domains, drainage hierarchy, and rainfall information using an algebraic map, and (ii) emerging fragility levels via the addition of the land-use parameters. The methodological approach involved the integration of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and weighted linear combination (WLC) into a geographic information system (GIS). The medium and slightly low fragility classes predominated in terms of potential (~60%), and emerging (~70%) environmental fragility models used to model the basin. The model indicated that high and extremely high potential fragilities were concentrated in the upper basin, a region that is considered a global biodiversity hotspot. The areas with high/extremely high classes of emerging fragility in the upper basin decreased, indicating that the natural cover classes and land-use types are not in danger. We also introduce acceptable conservation practices for land management and use according to the environmental fragility categories established in the present work. The methodology applied in this study can be replicated in other global ecoregions. It provides low-cost territorial and environmental zoning and flexible replication and can be adjusted by administrators who are interested in land-use planning.

For more than 20 years Antarctic Treaty Parties have been discussing how to appropriately manage cumulative impacts in the continent. Preventing cumulative impacts requires the fluent exchange of information to enable proper and timely assessment of, and response to, the impacts that result from multiple activities, undertaken by multiple stakeholders and supervised by different Parties. This is a particular challenge for the effective management of Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs), as a lack of coordination may potentially put at risk the fulfillment of their conservation objectives. Here we suggest that incorporating lessons learnt from protected areas management elsewhere might improve the effectiveness of ASPAs and provide valuable experiences and insights on how to better manage cumulative impacts in the rest of the continent. Key concepts to incorporate in Antarctica’s environmental management toolbox include (1) the notion of adaptive management, which is a cornerstone of protected areas management effectiveness elsewhere, and (2) the need of empowering protected area managers, which are a key (but often missing) element to ensure local compliance with management plans, co-ordinate on site activities, facilitate exchange of information, promote cooperation and manage conflicts.

An ecosystem-based management approach (EBM) is suggested as one solution to help to tackle environmental challenges facing worldwide farming systems whilst ensuring socio-economic demands are met. Despite its usefulness, the application of this approach at the farm-scale presents several implementation problems, including the difficulty of (a) incorporating the concept of ecosystem services (ES) into agricultural land use decision-making and (b) involving the farmer in the planning process. This study aims to propose a solution to overcome these challenges by utilising a geodesign framework and EBM approach to plan and design a sustainable multifunctional agricultural landscape at the farm scale. We demonstrate how the proposed approach can be applied to plan and design multifunctional agricultural landscapes that offer improved sustainability, using a New Zealand hill country farm as a case study. A geodesign framework is employed to generate future land use and management scenarios for the study area, visualize changes, and assess the impacts of future land use on landscape multifunctionality and the provision of associated ES and economic outcomes. In this framework, collaboration with the farmer was carried out to obtain farm information and co-design the farmed landscapes. The results from our study demonstrate that farmed landscapes where multiple land use/ land cover types co-exist can provide a wide range of ES and therefore, meet both economic and environmental demands. The assessment of impacts for different land use change scenarios demonstrates that land use change towards increasing landscape diversity and complexity is a key to achieving more sustainable multifunctional farmed landscapes. The integration of EBM and geodesign, is a transdisciplinary approach that can help farmers target land use and management decisions by considering the major ES that are, and could be, provided by the landscapes in which these farm systems are situated, therefore maximising the potential for beneficial outcomes.

Galicia is one of Spain's leading regions regarding agricultural and livestock production. In the light of the COVID-19 crisis, the permeability to the economic shocks of these sectors led to an unprecedented recession, given the heterogeneity of their characteristics, resulting in widespread losses. The main objective of this article is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 in the agricultural and livestock sectors in Galicia and, at the same time, identify the degree of affectation in each of these sectors, determine the impact of the pandemic in each province and study the institutional responses to the COVID-19 crisis. For this purpose, financial analysis of these sectors will be carried out through a sample of 998 companies. The results show a variation in operating income of -16.41% in the agricultural sector and -9.15% in the livestock sector in Galicia, although they are mixed across the different provinces of the region. Despite the articulation of a network of public aids and the adoption of new commercialization strategies, there are sub-sectors with high losses, such as the ornamental plant industry and the subsector dedicated to the production of beef.

Biodiversity assessment is a mandatory task for sustainable and adaptive management for the next decade, and long-term ecological monitoring programs are a cornerstone for understanding changes in ecosystems. The Brazilian Long-Term Ecological Research Program (PELD) is an integrated effort model supported by public funds that finance ecological studies at 34 locations. By interviewing and compiling data from project coordinators, we assessed monitoring efforts, targeting biological groups and scientific production from nine PELD projects encompassing coastal lagoons to mesophotic reefs and oceanic islands. Reef environments and fish groups were the most often studied within the long-term projects. PELD projects covered priority areas for conservation but missed sensitive areas close to large cities, as well as underrepresenting ecosystems on the North and Northeast Brazilian coast. A combination of ecological and socio-economic outcome indicators is essential for understanding and assessing the effectiveness of the remediation and restoration of degraded ecosystems and revitalizing communities that could benefit from these ecosystem management activities. In this paper, we propose and develop a conceptual approach to characterize ecological suitability that incorporates ecological attributes that support ecosystem structural diversity and functionality, stakeholder values and perceptions, and the benefits derived from ecosystem goods and services. A structured literature review was used to identify existing restoration frameworks and indicators to inform the conceptual foundation for characterizing ecological suitability. The structure of the conceptual approach primarily builds from ecological and social attributes in the International Principles and Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration (Gann et al., 2019). We provide a conceptual example of the ecological suitability approach in estuaries. This example is based on habitat suitability and food web characterizations in combination with the provisioning of ecosystem services and desired social benefits to prioritize and evaluate restoration effectiveness. This foundational work sets the stage for developing a composite measure of ecological suitability. The holistic conceptual approach presented complements existing information regarding restoration effectiveness evaluations. Characterizing ecological suitability is a novel way to incorporate ecological and social information and communicate potential restoration outcomes to ecosystem managers and stakeholders.

Abstract Understanding the relative importance of multiple stressors is valuable to prioritize conservation and restoration measures. Yet, the effects of multiple stressors on ecosystem functioning remain largely unknown in many fresh waters. Here, we provided a methodology combining ecosystem modeling with linear regression to disentangle the effects of multiple stressors on matter flow, an important ecosystem function. Treating a shallow lake as the model ecosystem, we simulated matter flow dynamics during 1950s–2010s with different combinations of stressors by Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) modeling and determined the relative importance of each stressor by generalized linear mixed models. We found that matter flow of the lake food web was highly dynamic, attributing to effects of multiple anthropogenic stressors. Biological invasion played the strongest role in driving the matter flow dynamics, followed by eutrophication, while biomanipulation (i.e., phytoplankton control by planktivorous fish stocking) was of little importance. Eutrophication had a stronger role on primary producers, pelagic food chain, and top predators, while biological invasion on consumers in the middle of food chains. The former was more important in driving the quantity of matter flow, while the latter on trophic transfer efficiencies. Scenario forecasting showed that reducing nutrients contents could largely shape the matter flow pattern, while biomanipulation had little effect. Our findings provided new insights into understanding the mechanistic links between anthropogenic stressors and ecosystem functioning by combining ecosystem modeling with linear regression.

As amplified by climate changes and anthropogenic activities, mobile generalist species have been dominating the food web succession in a closed ecosystem. However, compared to marine ecosystem, the internal mechanism of generalist species affecting freshwater community were paid less attentions. In this study, the association of mobile generalist species and native apex predator was identified in Chenghai Lake, where was taken as the study case of a closed ecosystem to create the succession dynamic of food web from 1983 to 2019. Weighted food web analysis (WFWA) approach was applied to determine keystoneness and interaction strength of each species node, which is achieved through the quantification of the direct impacts on food web nodes from its biomass. As shown in the results, in the food web of 1983, there were nearly 25 nodes and 80 links, while in 2009, there were 22 nodes and 58 links, however, in 2019, there were 16 nodes and 25 links. In 2019, the three original specialized apex predator nodes were disappear. The keystoneness of each species was − 0.048, − 0.109 and − 0.742 respectively. During the nearly 40-year succession, including 13 native species had gone within 10 years, which were difficult to find its trace. The omnivorous alien species have occupied an absolute dominant niche, exhibiting the characteristics of mobile generalist species in 2019. The keystoneness of these species was − 0.194, − 0.235 and − 0.236 respectively. In general, from 1983 to 2019, the nodes have decreased by 36% and links have dropped by 68.75% on average in Chenghai Lake food web. In this study, (a)revealing the associations between mobile generalist species and native apex predators; (b) distinguishing the keystone species affecting food web structural; (c) developing food web analysis approach and determining the succession dynamic of Chenghai Lake. These findings improve the understanding of potential impacts from mobile generalist species in closed ecosystem.

The provision and utilization of grassland resources connect grassland ecosystems and pastoral society. Revealing the mechanism behind the forage supply–demand relationship and balancing forage supply and demand is essential in pastoral socio-ecological systems. Taking Altay Prefecture as the case study, this study quantified the dynamics of natural forage supply, artificial supplemental forage, and forage demand. The ratio of forage supply to demand was calculated in the traditional grazing scenario and the grazing prohibition and supplemental feeding scenario. The results showed that during 2001–2018, the forage supplied by natural grasslands fluctuated, with the highest and lowest values in 2013 and 2008, respectively. The artificial supplemental forage increased at a higher rate in 2011–2018 than in 2001–2010. The overall trend of forage demand was upward, at approximately 2.98 × 104 t/a. The ratio of forage supply to demand decreased in the traditional scenario with an average value of 0.4717 and increased in the grazing prohibition and supplemental feeding scenario with an average value of 0.8289. The influencing factors were analyzed from the perspective of the interactions between the socio-ecological system elements, and the forage supply–demand relationships were conceptualized based on the social–ecological system framework. This study concludes that natural grasslands cannot entirely meet the increasing forage demand without artificial supplemental forage. The increasing artificial supplemental forage has promoted a balance between forage supply and demand, indicating an optimized grassland utilization pattern. The factors that affect forage supply–demand relationships are interrelated, and a holistic perspective should be adopted when implementing management measures.

Understanding effects of environment on the distribution of economic fish is a fundamental step in the ecosystem-based management and ultimately a standard approach in management policies. Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) is one of the most important aquatic species harvested in the Indian Ocean. The present study investigated the association of different variables effecting the rate of catch and distribution of bigeye tune, using generalized additive model (GAM) and maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and satellite derived environmental variables in the Indian Ocean. Results highlighted the importance of temporal and spatial variables along with the eddy kinetic energy, sea level height, depth of 20°C isotherm and sea surface temperature on the distribution of the species. The most suitable habitat predicted by MaxEnt model was observed around the latitudes of 0 to 5 degrees of north and south, mainly in the western part of the Indian Ocean and longitude of 45 to 70 degrees east. Using satellite data, the present study determinied the important factors and suitable habitats for the species, which can be useful for Iranian fisheries managers to increase the fishing efficiency and implementing of ecosystem-based fisheries management in the shared exploited stocks of the Indian Ocean.

Abstract Understanding regional‐scale food web structure in the Southern Ocean is critical to informing fisheries management and assessments of climate change impacts on Southern Ocean ecosystems and ecosystem services. Historically, a large component of Southern Ocean ecosystem research has focused on Antarctic krill, which provide a short, highly efficient food chain, linking primary producers to higher trophic levels. Over the last 15 years, the presence of alternative energy pathways has been identified and hypotheses on their relative importance in different regions raised. Using the largest circumpolar dietary database ever compiled, we tested these hypotheses using an empirical circumpolar comparison of food webs across the four major regions/sectors of the Southern Ocean (defined as south of 40°S) within the austral summer period. We used network analyses and generalizations of taxonomic food web structure to confirm that while Antarctic krill are dominant as the mid‐trophic level for the Atlantic and East Pacific food webs (including the Scotia Arc and Western Antarctic Peninsula), mesopelagic fish and other krill species are dominant contributors to predator diets in the Indian and West Pacific regions (East Antarctica and the Ross Sea). We also highlight how tracking data and habitat modeling for mobile top predators in the Southern Ocean show that these species integrate food webs over large regional scales. Our study provides a quantitative assessment, based on field observations, of the degree of regional differentiation in Southern Ocean food webs and the relative importance of alternative energy pathways between regions.

Urban forests play a vital role in maintaining the city ecological balance and providing ecosystem services to citizens. Ecosystem services lead to better quality of life, better environmental quality, and more sustainable urban growth. However, many emerging nations have often progressed at the price of lowering and sacrificing forest coverage, which has a negative impact on the benefits that the public receives from natural green spaces. As a result, the goals of this research were to ascertain visitor impressions of urban forests in Kuala Lumpur, to assess the value assigned by visitors to urban forests in Kuala Lumpur, and to investigate the elements that impact the willingness to pay. A questionnaire-based field study was conducted on a total of 254 respondents among Taman Tugu Urban Forest visitors, Kuala Lumpur. The results show that visitor perceptions of regulating services, cultural services, and supporting services were positive, with high-level score values of 4.74, ±0.40, 4.69, ±0.37, and 4.70, ±0.50. Furthermore, provisioning services were perceived to be of moderately high level (3.49, ±1.12), and visitor perceptions of urban forest amenities were positive, with high-level scores (4.39, ±0.53). Overall, this indicates that visitors had a very good perception of Taman Tugu Urban Forest ecosystem services. However, when we looked at the factors that contributed to the willingness to pay for the conservation of urban forests and entry, only the perception of the amenities provided at Taman Tugu had a significant relationship with the willingness to pay. A total of 79.1% of visitors expressed their willingness to pay, for forest conservation, an average payment value of MYR 51.32 per year, while 65% of visitors were willing to pay, as entry fees at urban forests, an average payment value of MYR 3.07 per person. It can be concluded that visitors had a positive perception of urban forests in Kuala Lumpur and were willing to contribute for conservation and entry fee purposes. We hope that the findings of this research contribute to a better understanding of urban forest ecosystem services in Kuala Lumpur and visitor perception. In addition, this study could also be useful to policy makers to formulate a specific policy focus on urban forests by comprehensively and holistically including the monetary value of the ecosystem services provided, considering public opinion and needs, and performing financial allocation for conserving and managing urban forests. This is to ensure that the urban sustainable development goals and smart city aims can be achieved.

Mapping the distribution and evaluating the impacts of marine non-indigenous species (NIS) are two fundamental tasks for management purposes, yet they are often time consuming and expensive. This case study focuses on the NIS gilthead seabream Sparus aurata escaped from offshore farms in Madeira Island in order to test an innovative, cost-efficient combined approach to risk assessment and georeferenced dispersal data collection. Species invasiveness was screened using the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), and revealed a high invasion risk. Occurrences of S. aurata were assessed involving citizens in GIS participatory mapping and data from recreational fishing contests. A probability map showed that S. aurata is well dispersed around Madeira Island. This assessment proved to be a cost-efficient early warning method for detecting NIS dispersal, highlighting the urgent need for additional surveys that should search for sexually mature individuals and assess the direct and indirect impacts in the native ecosystem.

Using a metaphor based on a historical debate between socialist and free-market economists, Salliou and Stritih ( Environ. Res. Lett. 18 151001) advocate for decentralizing environmental management to harness emergent complexity and promote ecosystem health. Concerningly, however, their account seems to leave little room for top-down processes like government-led sustainability programs or centrally-planned conservation initiatives, the cornerstone of the post-2020 biodiversity framework. While we appreciate their call for humbleness, we offer a few words in defense of planning. Drawing on evidence from ecology, economics, and systems theory, we argue that (1) more complexity is not always better; (2) even if it were, mimicking minimally-regulated markets is probably not the best way to get it; and (3) sophisticated decision support tools can support humble planning under uncertainty. We sketch a re-interpretation of the socialist calculation debate that highlights the role of synthesis and theoretical pluralism. Rather than abandoning big-picture thinking, scientists must continue the difficult work of strengthening connections between and across multiple social, ecological, and policy scales.

As climate change and other anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems accelerate in the 21st century, there is an increasing need for sustained ocean time series. A robust and collaborative network of regional monitoring programs can detect early signs of unanticipated changes, provide a more holistic understanding of ecosystem responses, and prompt faster management actions. Fisheries-related surveys that collect fisheries-independent data (hereafter referred to as “fisheries surveys”) are a key pillar of sustainable fisheries management and are ubiquitous in the United States and other countries. From the perspective of ocean observing, fisheries surveys offer three key strengths: (1) they are sustained due to largely consistent funding support from federal and state public sector fisheries agencies, (2) they collect paired physical, chemical, and biological data, and (3) they have large and frequently overlapping spatial footprints that extend into the offshore region. Despite this, information about fisheries survey data collection can remain poorly known to the broader academic and ocean observing communities. During the 2019 CalCOFI Symposium, marking the 70th anniversary of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI), representatives from 21 ocean monitoring programs on the North American West Coast came together to share the status of their monitoring programs and examine opportunities to leverage efforts to support regional ecosystem management needs. To increase awareness about collected ocean observing data, we catalog these ongoing ocean time series programs and detail the activities of the nine major federal or state fisheries surveys on the U.S. West Coast. We then present three case studies showing how fisheries survey data contribute to the understanding of emergent ecosystem management challenges: marine heatwaves, ocean acidification, and contaminant spills. Moving forward, increased cross-survey analyses and cooperation can improve regional capacity to address emerging challenges. Fisheries surveys represent a foundational blueprint for ecosystem monitoring. As the international community moves toward a global strategy for ocean observing needs, fisheries survey programs should be included as data contributors.

Kelp and macroalgal forests provide the ecological foundations of many temperate rocky reef ecosystems, but have regionally declined, often due to sea urchin overgrazing and the formation of urchin barrens. Sea urchin removal has long been used to investigate kelp-sea urchin dynamics and is increasingly being promoted for kelp forest restoration. In this review, we assess the methods and outcomes of sea urchin removal experiments to evaluate their potential use and feasibility as a tool for restoring macroalgal forests. Seventy-nine sea urchin removal projects were reviewed from temperate subtidal rocky reef systems between 1975 and 2020. Removal methods were often not reported (35%), but included manual culling, including crushing (25%) and chemical application (quicklime, 9%), or relocating sea urchins (13%). Only a small percentage of removals were large in scale (16% > 10 ha) and 92% of these utilized culling. Culling is often the most practical method of urchin removal, but all methods can be effective and we encourage development of new approaches that harvest and utilize low-quality urchins. Urchin removal led to an increase in macroalgae in 70% of studies, and a further 21% showed partial increases (e.g., at one or more sites or set of conditions). Restoration effectiveness is increased by removing essentially all sea urchins from discrete areas of urchin barrens. Sea urchin removal provides a simple, relatively cheap, and effective method that promotes kelp recovery within urchin barrens. However, sea urchin removal does not address the underlying cause of elevated sea urchin populations and is unlikely to provide a long-term solution to restore kelp forests and full ecosystem function on its own. We therefore suggest that if sea urchin removal is considered as a tool for kelp forest restoration, it should be incorporated with other management measures that aim to increase kelp forest resilience and biodiversity (e.g., marine protected areas, predator protection or enhancement). This will ensure that kelp restoration efforts have the greatest ecological, socio-economic and cultural outcomes in the long-term.

Abstract Background A green roof is a man-made ecosystem created when a rooftop is covered with substrate and vegetation. Although green roof ecosystems (GREs) are able to provide ecosystem services, there is currently no assessment tool available to specifically evaluate this. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a rapid assessment checklist (RAC) to assess GRE services (GRES), which was developed and tested on 10 green roofs in Bangkok, Thailand. Results The RAC consisted of 46 proxy indicators (33 qualitative and 13 quantitative indicators) encompassing various aspects of GRESs. The GRES values or scores varied according to structural differences in the green roofs. The average score (from a maximum of 100) of total ecosystem services was 61 ± 7, which could be inferred as a good performance in ecosystem service provision. The highest scores were obtained from the regulating services at 68 ± 7. The lowest average score was 53 ± 11 from the provisioning services. Conclusions The RAC was able to evaluate the levels of GRES provided by the selected green roofs, enabling the meaningful comparison of their potential capability to provide GRES. Therefore, this RAC could be an innovative tool for evaluation of four categories of GRES.

Drylands cover about 41% of the Earth’s land surface and are inhabited by more than two billion people, who rely on the diversified ecosystem services provided by drylands for their livelihoods. Achieving sustainable livelihoods (SLs) is a key component of achieving the sustainable development goals set by the agenda in 2030. Although it has aroused extensive interest, research on SLs in drylands at a regional scale is still limited. This paper aims to address this research gap by evaluating SLs through a geographic gradient of aridity in Inner Mongolia. A sustainable livelihood index (SLI) was developed using a wide range of indicators in a sustainable livelihood framework (SLF). The weight of the indicators was determined by the entropy weight method, and the characteristics of the spatial distribution of the SLI were analyzed. The results showed that the SLI varies greatly across aridity zones. In terms of livelihood assets, the SLI in the dry sub-humid zone was 15% higher than in the arid zones, while, surprisingly, semi-arid zones were found to have the most vulnerable livelihoods (rather than the arid zones). The reason for this is that land management and planning approaches are necessary in drylands. In further detail, Moran’s I index illustrated that the overall performance of the SLI of each league or city has a positive spatial correlation, while through local spatial correlation it was found that Hinggan and Chifeng are hot spot areas and Hohhot is a cold spot area. The lack of physical and social capital is an important obstacle for SLs. Based on the analysis of SLs in Inner Mongolia, the characteristics of the sustainable development of local residents were revealed. In this paper, we call for an integrated (i.e., focusing on natural and human capital) land management and planning approach for drylands to reflect the nature of the tightly coupled socio-ecological systems.

We realized a high level of biodiversity (200+ plant species) beyond the natural state on a rooftop garden in city area based on the Synecoculture method, which is a densely mixed polyculture of edible plants, and analyzed the diversity and activity of the soil microorganisms and chemical properties during two years. Soil microbes gradually increased in diversity and activity after the installation, and were positively correlated with cation exchange capacity. This may constitute one of the rationales of Synecoculture that could ameliorate soil quality starting from decertified farmland and provide high productivity. We also investigated whether the results of these objective analyses matched the subjective evaluation of the practitioners. As a result, two years after continuous practices, the human subjective evaluations were qualitatively consistent with the objective data, suggesting that future research and surveys could incorporate trained human subjectivity as a part of the assessment proxies in ecosystem management.

Assessment of the change in ecosystem services and their bundles and hotspots in a spatial-explicitly manner can provide practical support for ecological conservation measure priority setting. This study assessed the spatio-temporal dynamics of vital ecosystem services (ESs) from 1972 to 2047 and identified statistically significant hotspots and coldspots of ES clusters in the Beressa watershed using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model and spatial statistical analysis. The result showed that the provision of ESs significantly declined over the study period. Habitat maintenance, sediment retention, and water retention were spatially co-occurring, while the service of climate regulation and crop yield showed a reasonable difference in their distribution. Consequently, spatial and temporal correlations within hydrological regulating services and habitat maintenance were consistent, however the relationship between crop yield and regulating services varied with time. The result of spatial clustering indicated that bundle 1 and 2 had high hydrological and allied services due to a high proportion of grassland, clustered in western areas with lower elevation and relatively gentle slope. Bundle 3 with high agricultural provisioning showed various distribution during the study period. Bundle 4 had increased climate regulation clustered in eastern areas in high elevation and steep slope land and holds a high proportion of plantation. On average, hotspot and coldspot comprised about 24% and 48% of the space, respectively. Hotspots delivered most ESs, and their area declined, while coldspots increased during the study period. The spatio-temporal variations in ESs appeared to be determined by human activities, especially expansion of artificial plantation, human settlements, agricultural practice, and topographic gradient. ES bundles and hotspots analyses can identify areas in the landscape whereby ecosystem management has produced maximum benefits through enhancing services. Therefore, landscape preference should be integrated into land management plans to amend ecosystem's function.

Abstract Southern Africa harbors exceptional biodiversity that is increasingly threatened by climate change, land use, and other pressures. However, risks to the regional ecosystems and quality and consistency of adaptation strategies remain understudied, making conservation and restoration efforts challenging. Here, we reviewed scientific articles published during the period 2000–2020, which (1) addressed observed and projected impacts of climate change on different species, populations, and ecosystems in nine southern African countries, and (2) formulated management and policy responses aiming to mitigate these impacts. We identified and evaluated 28 papers meeting these search criteria. We found that the three components of our investigation, that is, ecosystem type, type of impact, and management and policy responses, were covered by research rather fragmentarily. However, the reviewed publications addressed a large variety of species and ecosystems and a variety of processes, from local extinction, range contraction, and increased mortality to modified inter‐specific interactions. The identified human responses included active vegetation and animal management, improved conservation policies, and monitoring. Most of the publications highlighted severe data limitations, lacking coordination of conservation policies, and insufficient consideration of transient environmental conditions in management and policy planning. We conclude that the current level of understanding of climatic threats to species and ecosystems is limited in southern Africa, and new coordinated research and monitoring actions are needed. This review characterized the high diversity of climate change risks to ecosystems and related social responses, potentially helping to attract further research attention and inform regional adaptation strategies.

Ecosystem restoration projects (ERPs) are effective for achieving sustainable development goals. However, a nexus perspective has not yet been effectively used to examine the regimes and interconnections between the sectors of agricultural production, ecosystem restoration, and the livelihoods of farmers, which may have constrained the efficacy of ERPs. In this study, the evolution of these different sectors in ecosystem restoration hotspot cases was investigated using a novel nexus perspective, and their interconnections and implications for ecosystem management were determined. Rapid urbanisation, reclamation, and ERPs have profoundly altered landscape patterns and caused significant ecological changes. Prior to 1999, extensive reclamation proved unsustainable because deforestation activities and cultivation on sloping cropland resulted in severe soil loss and ecosystem deterioration, despite providing significant increases in grain productivity and economic profits. Although revegetation practices after 1999 accelerated vegetation regeneration and enhanced soil retention and carbon sequestration, they also resulted in a decline in grain productivity and economic profits during the initial period of implementing ERPs (1999–2008). However, subsequent policy adjustments and the construction of terraced fields have mitigated cropland loss and maintained the grain supply. The nexus perspective was effective in identifying and coordinating relationships among the sectors, and timely policy interventions have transformed the relationships from trade-offs to synergies and provided win–win outcomes. However, the ongoing urbanisation continues to be a challenge for conserving ecosystems and ensuring food security; therefore, further optimised, and targeted strategies are required to balance contrasting goals and maximise co-benefits according to the environmental and socio-economic conditions.

Biodiversity loss is a consequence of socio-ecological processes. Observations on anthropogenic actions toward ecosystems coupled to observations on ecosystem metrics are needed to help understand these processes so that ecosystem management policies can be derived and implemented to curb such destruction. Such data needs to be maintained in searchable data portals. To this end, this article delivers a first-of-its-kind relational database of observations on coupled anthropogenic and ecosystem actions. This Ecosystem Management Actions Taxonomy (EMAT) database is founded on a taxonomy designed to support models of political-ecological processes. Structured query language scripts for building and querying these databases are described. The use of episodes in the construction of political-ecological theory is also introduced. These are frequently occurring sequences of political-ecological actions. Those episodes that test positive for causality can aid in improving a political-ecological theory by driving modifications to an attendant computational model so that it generates them. Two relational databases of political-ecological actions are described that are built from online news articles and published data on species abundance. The first concerns the management of the East African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) population, and the second is focused on the management of rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) in South Africa. The cheetah database is used to study the political drivers of cheetah habitat loss, and the rhino database is used study the political drivers of rhino poaching. An EMAT database is a fundamental breakthrough because is provides a language for conservation science to identify the objects and phenomena that it is about. Therefore, maintaining political-ecological data in EMAT databases will advance conservation science and consequently, improve management policies that are based on that science.
