In this paper, we use a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation based on Geant4 to investigate the influence of four parameters on the spatial resolution of the lens-coupled lutetium yttrium orthosilicate (LYSO) scintillator, including the thickness of the LYSO scintillator, the F-number and minification factor of the lens, and the incident position of the gamma-rays. Simulation results show that when the gamma-rays are incident along the lens axis, the smaller the thickness, the larger the F-number, the larger the minification factor, the higher the spatial resolution, with an isotropic point spread function (PSF). As the incident position of the gamma-rays deviates from the lens axis, the spatial resolution decreases, and the PSF becomes anisotropic. In addition, by analyzing the whole physical process of the lens-coupled LYSO scintillator from gamma-rays to secondary electrons to fluorescence photons, we aim to provide a detailed analysis of the influence of each parameter on the spatial resolution. The results show that the PSF of the secondary electrons energy deposition is almost constant in the simulation, which determines the upper limit of the spatial resolution. Meanwhile, the dispersion process of the fluorescence photons can explain the reason why each parameter affects the spatial resolution.

Multiaxial neutron/x-ray imaging and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction techniques play a crucial role in gaining valuable insights into the generation and evolution mechanisms of pulsed radiation sources. Owing to the short emission time (∼200 ns) and drastic changes of the pulsed radiation source, it is necessary to acquire projection data within a few nanoseconds in order to achieve clear computed tomography 3D imaging. As a consequence, projection data that can be used for computed tomography image reconstruction at a certain moment are often available for only a few angles. Traditional algorithms employed in the process of reconstructing 3D images with extremely incomplete data may introduce significant distortions and artifacts into the final image. In this paper, we propose an iterative image reconstruction method using cylindrical harmonic decomposition and a self-supervised denoising network algorithm based on the deep image prior method. We augment the prior information with a 2D total variation prior and a 3D deep image prior. Single-wire Z-pinch imaging experiments have been carried out at Qin-1 facility in five views and four frames, with a time resolution of 3 ns for each frame and a time interval of 40 ns between adjacent frames. Both numerical simulations and experiments verify that our proposed algorithm can achieve high-quality reconstruction results and obtain the 3D intensity distribution and evolution of extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray emission from plasma.

The domain of gamma-ray imaging necessitates technological advancements to surmount the challenge of energy-selective imaging. Conventional systems are constrained in their dynamic focus on specific energy ranges, a capability imperative for differentiating gamma-ray emissions from diverse sources. This investigation introduces an innovative imaging system predicated on the detection of recoil electrons, addressing the demand for adjustable energy selectivity. Our methodology encompasses the design of a gamma-ray imaging system that leverages recoil electron detection to execute energy-selective imaging. The system’s efficacy was investigated experimentally, with emphasis on the adaptability of the energy selection window. The experimental outcomes underscore the system’s adeptness at modulating the energy selection window, adeptly discriminating gamma rays across a stipulated energy spectrum. The results corroborate the system’s adaptability, with an adjustable energy resolution that coincides with theoretical projections and satisfies the established criteria. This study affirms the viability and merits of utilizing recoil electrons for tunable energy-selective gamma-ray imaging. The system’s conceptualization and empirical validation represent a notable progress in gamma-ray imaging technology, with prospective applications extending from medical imaging to astrophysics. This research sets a solid foundation for subsequent inquiries and advancements in this domain.

A High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) could induce very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) with nanosecond level rise time and mega-volt amplitude, which severely threatens the electrical devices connected to the elevated transmission line. An elevated transmission line with different locations may suffer different levels of HEMP threat since the dip angle could influence the polarization of the HEMP wave. The combination of Rosenblatt Transformation and Polynomial Chaos Expansion (R-PCE) is introduced in this paper. With this method, the efficiency of calculating the overvoltage of an elevated transmission line under HEMP is improved, speeding up 24.75 times. The influence of different factors (dip angle, elevated height, and earth conductivity) on the overvoltage of elevated transmission lines applied in power systems is calculated and analyzed. The numerical result shows with 99.9% confidence that the overvoltage would be over 3.7 MV of amplitude and 6.7 × 1014 V/s of voltage derivative, which is much more rigorous than a lighting pulse. We also find that elevated transmission lines may have a larger HEMP threat in a small dip angle area. The corresponding data are shown at the end of the paper, which could be useful for relative researchers in pulse injection experiments and reliable evaluation.

This paper analyzes the intrinsic energy resolution, the influence law of multiple Coulomb scattering, the radiation conversion efficiency, and other factors of the Compton radiation conversion target. Based on the essential principle of interaction between gamma rays and matter, the theoretical characteristics and transport law of Compton electrons are analyzed. Through a Monte Carlo simulation, the composition, energy, and angular distribution of electrons emitted from the target surface are calculated; the influence of target parameters, such as target material, thickness, and electron collection angle, on target performance is studied; and then the optimization method of target parameters is established. Finally, the main performance parameters of the Compton radiation conversion target are given. This research reveals how multiple Coulomb scattering angles relate to materials of different types and thicknesses, as well as to the optimal collection angle. A series of optimized parameters for the material, mass thickness, and corresponding energy resolution of radiation conversion target with different conversion efficiencies are obtained.

The purpose of seismic data processing in nuclear explosion monitoring is to accurately and reliably detect seismic or explosion events from complex ambient noises. Accurate detection and identification of seismic phases are of great significance to the detection and parameter estimation of seismic events. In seismic phase identification, discriminating between noise signals and real seismic signals is essential. Accurate identification of noise signals helps reduce false detections, improves the accuracy of automatic bulletins, and relieves the workload of analysts. At the same time, in seismic exploration, the prime objective in data processing is also to enhance the signal and suppress the noises. In this study, we combined a generative adversarial network (GAN) with a long short-term memory network (LSTM) to discriminate between noise and phases in seismic waveforms recorded by the International Monitoring System (IMS) array MKAR. First, using the beamforming data of the array as the input, we obtained the signal features of seismic phases through the learning of the GAN discriminator network. Then, we input these features and trained the joint network on mixed seismic phase and noise data, and successfully classified seismic phases and noise signals with a recall of 95.28% and 97.64%, respectively. Based on this model, we established a real-time data processing method, then validated the effectiveness of this method with real 2019 data of MKAR. We also verified whether improved noise signal identification improves the quality of phase association and event detection.

A novel magnetic spectrometer for Inverse-Compton X-ray source is proposed. Compton recoil electrons are generated by a lithium converter, and then confined by a complex collimator and spectrally resolved by a sector-shaped double-focusing magnet. A method of optimization for the converter is investigated, and the dependence of the best energy resolution on converting efficiency is quantitatively revealed. The configuration of the magnet is specially designed to cover a wide range of electron energy and to achieve a large collecting solid angle. The efficiency and relative energy resolution of the designed spectrometer, according to Monte-Carlo simulation using Geant4, are 10-4 e/p and about 5% respectively for 3 MeV photons.
