Cell sheet technology (CST) has primarily been applied in tissue engineering for repair purposes. Our preliminary research indicates that an in vivo prostate cancer model established using CST outperforms traditional cell suspension methods. However, the potential for CST to be used with bladder cancer cells has not yet been explored. In this study, we investigated the ability of two bladder cancer cell lines, T24 and 5637, to form cell sheets. We found that T24 cells successfully formed cell sheets. We then performed staining to evaluate the integrity, specific markers, and proliferation characteristics of the T24 cell sheets. Our findings demonstrate that bladder cancer cell sheets can be established, providing a valuable tool for both in vivo and in vitro bladder cancer studies and for personalized drug selection for patients.

Biochar has demonstrated potential for stabilising high yields and sequestering carbon in dryland farmland, but it is unclear whether biochar affects the carbon sequestration capacity and carbon balance of annual farmland ecosystems. For this purpose, we conducted a plot control trial in salinised farmland in 2019-2021, where we set three treatments, control, and two biochar rates, 0 (CK), 15 (B15), and 30 t/ha (B30). The results showed that biochar application decreased soil organic carbon stocks in the early part of the experiment (first freeze and freeze period); these increased in the later part, and overall, the biochar treatments increased soil organic carbon storage by 3-6% compared with the control. Compared with the control (CK), biochar inhibited the total soil respiration rate and microbial respiration rate significantly (P < 0.05) during the crop growing period compared with the freeze-thaw period. After two years of freeze-thaw cycling, biochar application increased sunflower plant carbon sequestration and net primary productivity and suppressed total soil microbial respiration, thereby increasing net ecosystem productivity. Therefore, the application of biochar is conducive to carbon sequestration in farmland ecosystems and presents a carbon sink effect, thus being a good choice for improving the soil carbon pool and reducing emissions in the northern dry zone.

Abstract To investigate the endothelialization of covered and bare stents deployed in the canine carotid arteries and subclavian arteries for treating experimental aneurysms and arteriovenous fistulas, twenty aneurysms were created in 10 dogs, and 20 fistulas in another 10 dogs. The Willis balloon-expandable covered stent and a self-expandable covered stent were used to treat these lesions, and a self-expandable bare stent was deployed in the subclavian artery for comparison. Followed up for up to 12 months, the gross observation, pathological staining, and scanning electronic microscopic data were analyzed. Two weeks after creation of animal model, thirty self-expandable covered stents and ten balloon-expandable covered stents were deployed. Fifteen bare stents were deployed within the left subclavian arteries. Twenty days after stenting, the aneurysm significantly shrank. At 6 months, the thrombi within the aneurysm cavity were organized. Three to 12 months later, most covered and bare stents were covered by a thin transparent or white layer of endothelial intima. Layers of intima or pseudomembrane were formed on the stent 20–40 days after stent deployment. Over three months, the pseudomembrane became organized, thinner, and merged into the vascular wall. Under scanning electronic microscopy, the surface of covered and bare stents had only deposition of collagen fibers and rare endothelial cells 20–40 days after stenting. From three to ten months, the endothelial cells on the internal surface of stent became mature, with spindle, stripe-like or quasi round morphology along the blood flow direction. Over time, the endothelial cells became mature. In conclusion, three months after deployment in canines’ arteries, the self-expandable bare and covered stents have mostly been covered by endothelial cells which become maturer over time, whereas the balloon-expandable covered stents do not have complete coverage of endothelial cells at three months, especially for protruding stent struts and areas. Over time, the endothelialization will become mature.

Background The assessment of left ventricular (LV) remodeling and its association with mineral and bone disorder (MBD) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) have not been systematically studied. We aimed to evaluate LV remodeling changes one year after kidney transplantation (KT) and identify their influencing factors.Methods Ninety-five KTRs (68 males; ages 40.2 ± 10.8 years) were followed before and one year after KT. Traditional risk factors and bone metabolism indicators were assessed. Left ventricular mass index (LVMI), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) were measured using two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography. The relationship between MBD and LV remodeling and the factors influencing LV remodeling were analyzed.Results One year after KT, MBD was partially improved, mainly characterized by hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, hyperparathyroidism, 25-(OH) vitamin D deficiency, elevated bone turnover markers, and bone loss. LVMI, the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and the prevalence of LVDD decreased, while LVEF increased. LVH was positively associated with postoperative intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and iPTH nonnormalization. ΔLVMI was positively associated with preoperative type-I collagen N-terminal peptide and postoperative iPTH. LVEF was negatively associated with postoperative phosphorous. ΔLVEF was negatively associated with postoperative iPTH. LVDD was positively associated with postoperative lumbar spine osteoporosis. Preoperative LVMI was negatively associated with ΔLVMI and positively associated with ΔLVEF. Advanced age, increased BMI, diabetes, longer dialysis time, lower albumin level, and higher total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels were associated with LV remodeling.Conclusions LV remodeling partially improved after KT, showing a close relationship with MBD.

Abstract Background and Aims Burn and scald injuries are the fourth most common type of trauma. Pediatric burns account for a high proportion of the total number of burn patients and impose a high burden on public health. Understanding the epidemiology of pediatric burns can help improve science education and reduce the incidence of burn injuries. Methods This study is a single‐center retrospective study. One thousand five hundred and twenty‐seven pediatric burn patients admitted to our burn center from January 2016 to December 2020 were included. Demographic and epidemiological data of included patients were extracted and analyzed. The correlations of categorical data were tested by the Chi‐square tests, and differences of continuous data were tested by the Kruskal–Wallis tests. A p‐value of less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results The results showed that children under 3 years of age were most susceptible to burn and scald injuries. Burn injuries were most likely to occur in the season of winter and at the place of home. 56.6% of included patients did receive first aid measures, while 1.8% received gold‐standard first aid. Clinical variables related to the severity of injuries were statistically different between patients with and without cooling measures in first aid. Linear regression models showed that emergency treatment of burns in children and adolescents was associated with outcome indicators, including number of operations, total operation duration per total burn surface area (TBSA), cost per TBSA, and length of stay per TBSA. Conclusions This study summarized the epidemiology and outcomes of pediatric burn patients admitted to a burn center in northern China. Adopting cooling measures in first aid can reduce the severity of injuries and reduce the burden on the medical system. Education on burn prevention and first aid measures to caregivers of children, especially preschool children, should be strengthened.

This study uses high magnesium nickel slag (HMNS) directly as a raw material, to prepare high-temperature-resistant HMNS silico-aluminophosphate geopolymer (HMNSGP) activated by different types of acid activators including Al(H2PO4)3, H3PO4 and KH2PO4. By using characterization techniques such as XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, and MIP, the micro-properties, pore structure, and reaction mechanism of HMNSGP were investigated. The high temperature resistance of HMNSGP was evaluated by comparing compressive experiments before and after high temperature and TG-DSC. The results showed that the best samples were prepared using aluminium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) at a P/Al molar ratio of 0.6. At room temperature, the main phases geopolymerized of the sample are crystalline products (Newberyite) and amorphous hydrated products (-Si-O-P-O-Si-, -Al-O-P-O-, -Si-O-Al-O-Si- and -P-O-Mg-). At 1200 °C, HMNSGP can still maintain its integrity, and its compressive strength can be increased to 48.4 MPa. The HMNSGP prepared using H3PO4 has the same hydration products as the optimal samples, but the lower amount of gel phase causes spallation at high temperatures. Besides primary phases geopolymerized with ADP as activator, the KH2PO4 sample includes crystalline products (K-struvite). However, this phase decomposes at 207 °C, affecting its high-temperature resistance while a significant volume shrinkage occurs at 1200 °C. In summary, using ADP with a P/Al molar ratio of 0.6 can directly prepare HMNS into an environmentally friendly refractory geopolymer material, the compressive strength shows stable growth after being exposed to 1200 °C. This results suggested that HMNSGP prepared with ADP can be used for structural applications, laying the foundation for future replacement of refractory cement.

Current understanding of the cerebral vascular response to variations in blood pressure (BP) among individuals with hypertension is limited. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the correlation between hypertension, risk of stroke, and cerebral blood flow (CBF). We reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2023 from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct that compared mean CBF in normotensive (NTN) and hypertensive (HTN) patients. A random effects model was used to construct the risk ratio (RR), 95% confidence interval (CI), forest plot, and inverse variance weighting. Additionally, a mixed-effects meta-regression was employed to examine the impact of study-specific patient variables. This meta-analysis included eight prospective cross-sectional studies published from 2002 to 2023. It revealed a significant average difference in the standard mean CBF of −0.45 (95% CI −0.60 to −0.30, I2 = 69%, P < 0.00001), distinguishing NTN from HTN subjects. A RR of 0.90 (95% CI 0.63 to 1.30, I2 = 89%, P = 0.04) indicated a significant decrease in CBF among individuals with hypertension. We found a statistically significant relationship between changes in diastolic and systolic BPs and the mean CBF (R −0.81, P = 0.001 and R = −0.90, P = 0.005, respectively). Our research demonstrates a strong relationship between elevated BP and reduced CBF, with hypertension reducing CBF compared to NTN individuals, by increasing cerebrovascular resistance.

Anal fistula is a common anal and intestinal disease. The wound of anal fistula surgery is open and polluting, which is the most difficult to heal among all surgical incisions. To investigate the mechanism of Huanglian ointment (HLO) on wound healing after anal fistula incision. The S. aureus infected wound in SD rats were used to imitate poor healing wound after anal fistula surgery. SD rats with wound sites (n = 24) were randomly divided into four groups (Control group, Model group, Potassium permanganate (PP) treatment group, and HLO treatment group). The wound healing rate was evaluated, HE staining was used to evaluate the pathological changes of each group, ELISA was used to detect the secretion of inflammatory factors in each group, and the mechanism was explored through metabolomics and proteomics in plasma rat. Compared to other groups, the rate of wound healing in the HLO group was higher on days 7 and 14. Histological analysis showed that collagen and fibroblast in HLO rats were significantly increased, inflammatory cells were reduced, and vascular endothelial permeability was increased. ELISA results showed that the secretion of inflammatory factors in HLO rats was significantly lower. Significant proteins and metabolites were identified in the wound tissues of the infected rats and HLO-treated rats, which were mainly attributed to Cdc42, Ctnnb1, Actr2, Actr3, Arpc1b, Itgam, Itgb2, Cttn, Linoleic acid metabolism, d-Glutamine and d-glutamate metabolism, Phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, Phenylalanine metabolism, alpha-Linolenic acid metabolism, and Ascorbate and aldarate metabolism. In conclusion, this study showed that HLO can promote S. aureus infected wound healing, and the data provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of wounds after anal fistula surgery with HLO.

In the radiation work environment of nuclear power plants and similar facilities, radiation can induce Single Event Upsets (SEUs) and even Multiple Bit Upsets (MBUs) in Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and related devices. The hardware reinforcement techniques for FPGAs have strict material requirements and high costs, making implementation challenging. In contrast, FPGA software reinforcement techniques utilize error control coding to strengthen FPGA memory and combine with FPGA dynamic reconfiguration technology to reinforce the encoding and decoding modules. In this study, a BRAM fault injection experimental system is designed using Vivado to compare the reinforcement measures such as Hamming code, interleaved Hamming code, interleaved cyclic code, BCH code, and triple modular redundancy. Mathematical methods are employed to calculate their reliability performance indicators. The conclusion is that BCH (31,16,3) code exhibits the highest reliability, consumes the most resources, and can correct all errors of three bits or fewer. On the other hand, matrix interleaved code (28,16) can address the majority of MBUs, correcting all burst errors of four bits or fewer and some sporadic errors while utilizing relatively fewer resources.

Abstract This study proposes a method of constructing and transforming three-dimensional (3D) models that can convert a 3D model into a chain-type modular configuration and realize the mutual transformation between different configurations with a straight chain as the intermediate state through standard folding steps. A method for detailed representation of voxels is proposed. Based on detailed voxels, an accelerated generation algorithm for the connection forest, which can describe the possible chain configurations, is developed. The foldability verification of the configurations and the generation of the folding operations are realized according to the folding rules. A collision detection algorithm based on encoding and projection is also introduced to detect collisions in the process of folding sequence generation. In this work, an interactive platform is established for users to calculate the input model transformation through simple operations and obtain a simulation animation of the folding operations. The experimental cases prove the effectiveness of the method in constructing and transforming the chain-type modular configurations of the input 3D models.

Abstract Previously we isolated three Fusarium strains (a F. sacchari strain namely GXUF-1, and another two F. commune strains namely GXUF-2 and GXUF-3), and we verified that GXUF-3 was able to cause sugarcane root rot to the chewing cane cultivar Badila. Considering that Fusarium spp. are a group of widely distributed fungal pathogens, we tested whether these three Fusarium isolates were able to cause root rot to Badila as well as sugar-making cane cultivar (Guitang42), using a suitable inoculation method established based on infection assays using Badila. We found that the three Fusarium strains were able to cause root rot symptoms to both Badila and Guitang42, to different extents. To better investigate the potential pathogenicity mechanisms, we performed Illumina high-throughput sequencing and analyzed the whole genomic sequence data of these three Fusarium strains. The results reveal that the assembly sizes of the three Fusarium strains were in a range of 44.7–48.2 Mb, with G + C contents of 48.0–48.5%, and 14,154–15,175 coding genes. The coding genes were annotated by multiple public databases, and potential pathogenic genes were predicted using proprietary databases (such as PHI, DFVF, CAZy, etc.). Furthermore, based on evolutionary analysis of the coding sequence, we found that contraction and expansion of gene families occurred in the three Fusarium strains. Overall, our results suggest a potential risk that the root rot disease may occur to the sugar-making canes although it was initially spotted from fruit cane, and provide clues to understand the pathogenic mechanisms of Fusarium spp. causing sugarcane root rot.

Abstract A 3D transformable model can be transformed into different shapes through folding operations to suit different needs, such as a table or a chair in daily life. Furthermore, the features of foldable structure and flat components allow it to be folded into a smaller stack for compact storage when not in use. To this end, this study applies a new foldable modular chain structure and proposes a novel method of constructing 3D models into 3D shapes based on this structure and guiding the transformation between shapes. For the construction of the model, that is, to find a module chain path that constructs the model shape, the divide-and-conquer method is adopted. The model is first divided into multiple units, and then the search for the linearly connected module sub-path is executed for each unit. This involves three major steps: unit-based segmentation of the model, search for the unit tree structure that can form the target 3D shape, and search for the modular chain path based on the unit tree. The experimental cases demonstrate the application of the square modular chain in the fields of furniture and toys and prove the effectiveness of the method in constructing and transforming the foldable chain-type modular configurations of the input 3D models.

Abstract There are replanting problems in the production of herbaceous peony. If ramet seedlings are replanted in the original planting hole, they weaken year-by-year until their death, which reduces the land utilisation rate and increases the production costs. In this study, exogenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB, the main component is Lactobacillus plantarum) were applied to improve the planting soil of herbaceous peony for the first time to alleviate the replanting problems, to reduce the production costs, and to provide a new way to promote the of the herbaceous peony industry. In this study, herbaceous peony main cultivars varieties ‘Dafugui’ ‘Hongxiuqiu’ and ‘Zifengyu’ were selected, and experiments were conducted using exogenous LAB. Morphological, rhizosphere soil, and root physiology indexes were measured by sampling at the end of the high-growth periods of herbaceous peony. The results showed that after LAB treatment, the plant height, flowering rate, other morphological indexes and root vitality of ‘Hongxiuqiu’ were increased, with a better promoting effect than that of ‘Dafugui’ and ‘Zifengyu’. The ‘Dafugui’ rhizosphere soil nutrient content and enzyme activity were improved, followed by ‘Hongxiuqiu’ and ‘Zifengyu’. The rhizosphere soil free salicylic acid content and root abscisic acid content decreased, whereas the soil bacterial abundance, root antioxidant enzyme activity, proline and paeoniflorin content increased in all varieties. This study found that LAB application can improve soil fertility and enzyme activity, promote the growth and development of herbaceous peony, increase the flowering rate and improve the ornamental value. However, the influence of LAB on different herbaceous peony varieties varied. Therefore, it is necessary to further expand the number of varieties, optimise the application concentration and frequency of LAB application, alleviate the replanting problems in herbaceous peony production, improve the utilisation rate of land, promote excellent varieties of herbaceous peony, and provide a new methods and references. Silicone foam (SF) is a porous silicone rubber with a lower density, higher elasticity, and good thermal stability. In this work, we selected aluminum spheres and carbon fiber (CF) as thermally conductive fillers to prepare hybrid SF. After optimization, we found that Al and CF hybrid SF (Al-CF-SF) has a higher thermal conductivity (1.37 W·m–1·K–1) than the single-filler filled SF (CF-SF, 1.2 W·m–1·K–1 or Al-SF, 0.52 W·m–1·K–1) under the same filling amount of 60 wt%. The finite element simulation was used further to explore the thermal conductive mechanism of the hybrid SF. Meanwhile, the compressive and tensile modulus of the material (CF-SF) was increased to 10.8 and 3.3 MPa compared with pure SF, respectively, and the mechanical properties were improved. In addition, infrared thermography further demonstrated that Al-CF-SF has a faster heat transfer rate under relaxation and applied pressure.

Biochar is a widely recognized soil amendment used to improve soil physicochemical properties and crop productivity. However, its compositive effects on soil water, fertilizer, and carbon in cropping systems are not extensively understood. A two-year field study was conducted to investigate the influence of integrating maize-residue-derived biochar on evapotranspiration, water and fertilizer utilization efficiency, soil organic carbon (SOC) content, and soil carbon emissions in maize farming, employing drip irrigation in conjunction with film mulching. The treatments included the following three biochar amendments: 15 (B15); 30 (B30); and 45 (B45) t ha−1. Biochar was exclusively incorporated prior to sowing during the initial year of the experiment, and no biochar was used as a control (CK). After two years, the biochar amendments, especially B30, improved crop water productivity and the partial factor productivities of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer. Relative to CK, the biochar amendments significantly reduced soil CO2 and CH4 emissions during crop growth by 17.6–40.6% and −1.21–268.4%, respectively, averaged across two years. The best treatment effect was achieved by adding 15 t ha−1 of biochar. The biochar needed replenishing in the third year for B30 and in the fourth year for B45 to increase the SOC content by 20 g kg−1. An application rate of 22 metric tons per hectare of biochar is proposed to optimize water and fertilizer utilization efficiency, alongside augmenting the soil organic matter content, within maize farming under drip irrigation and mulching practices on sandy loam soil. However, the biochar must be added at 20 t ha−1 in the third year to counterbalance soil carbon losses and improve SOC.

Herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall) is resistant to drought but not waterlogging. The main production areas of peony are prone to waterlogging, seriously affecting the growth and development of herbaceous peony. Polyamines have been observed to significantly enhance the ability of plants to defend and repair adverse damage and affect the synthesis and accumulation of the endogenous growth hormones indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA). In this study, two herbaceous peony varieties (‘Lihong’, ‘Qihualushuang’) with different waterlogging tolerances were selected for artificial simulated waterlogging treatment to observe their morphological indexes and to determine their endogenous polyamine and hormone contents. Simultaneously, transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis were performed, focusing on screening differentially expressed genes in the polyamine metabolism pathway. The results showed that flood-tolerant varieties of herbaceous peony respond to waterlogging stress by continuously synthesizing spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm) through putrescine (Put) to counteract adversity. In the waterlogging-intolerant varieties, the expression of polyamine oxidase-related genes was annotated; their response to waterlogging stress was the simultaneous degradation of Spm and Spd to Put in the process of synthesis, and a decrease in the accumulation of Spm and Spd led to the early appearance of the symptoms of damage. In addition, polyamines influence key hormones that respond to plant adversity (IAA; ABA). The objective of this work was to initially analyze the mechanism of the polyamine signaling pathway in response to flooding in herbaceous peonies for further in-depth research on the mechanism of flooding tolerance in herbaceous peony, screen flood-tolerant varieties, and promote of their use.

Abstract Herbaceous peony is a perennial root plant that likes light and is cold-resistant. During summer, high temperature and strong light intensity advance its entry into the leaf wilting stage, which limits the accumulation of nutrients and formation of strong buds and severely affects its growth and development the following year. In this study, the wild herbaceous peony species and two main cultivars, ‘Zifengyu’ and ‘Hongfengyu’, were subjected to slight shading and strong light environments in summer, and their effects on leaf senescence and endogenous hormone and polyamine contents were explored. Slight shading treatment significantly delayed withering, increased the leaf net photosynthetic rate, and increased the chlorophyll, soluble sugar, indole-3-acetic acid, zeatin, gibberellin, spermine, spermidine, putrescine, and polyamine contents. Additionally, slight shading significantly reduced the proline and abscisic acid contents. Slight shading during summer prolonged the green period and delayed leaf senescence. The tolerance of tested materials to strong light intensity in summer was ranked as follows: ‘Zifengyu’ > ‘Hongfengyu’ > wild species. In conclusion, this study revealed that summer leaf senescence is delayed in herbaceous peony through shading and growth regulators. Additional varieties should be evaluated to provide reference for high-efficiency, high-quality, and high-yield cultivation of herbaceous peony.

Abstract Biological processes are typically actuated by dynamic multi-subunit molecular complexes. However, interactions between subunits, which govern the functions of these complexes, are hard to measure directly. Here, we develop a general approach combining cryo-EM imaging technology and statistical modeling and apply it to study the hexameric clock protein KaiC in Cyanobacteria. By clustering millions of KaiC monomer images, we identify two major conformational states of KaiC monomers. We then classify the conformational states of (>160,000) KaiC hexamers by the thirteen distinct spatial arrangements of these two subunit states in the hexamer ring. We find that distributions of the thirteen hexamer conformational patterns for two KaiC phosphorylation mutants can be fitted quantitatively by an Ising model, which reveals a significant cooperativity between neighboring subunits with phosphorylation shifting the probability of subunit conformation. Our results show that a KaiC hexamer can respond in a switch-like manner to changes in its phosphorylation level.

Based on the problem that considerable ballistic error and inaccurate target coverage of terminal-sensitive projectiles while fighting without weather conditions causing the reduction of combat effectiveness and/or even can’t complete combat tasks, this work elaborated two commonly used solutions and methods. According to the real working experience of the test range, a new proposal of using the meteorological forecast data to calculate the ballistic elements of the terminal-sensitive projectile was studied. Furthermore, the deviation between the ballistic landing point and the test landing point under various environmental factors such as standard meteorological conditions, meteorological forecast data and actual meteorological data was analyzed using numerous testing data and ballistic simulation results, which indicates the accuracy and reliability of meteorological forecast data in the terminal sensitive projectiles range and side deflection prediction. In summary, this study proves a theoretical reference for improving the combat effectiveness of terminal-sensitive projectiles under real combat environments, and also provides convenience for the development of terminal-sensitive projectile tests.

This paper proposes a new meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, the crown growth optimizer (CGO), inspired by the tree crown growth process. CGO innovatively combines global search and local optimization strategies by simulating the growing, sprouting, and pruning mechanisms in tree crown growth. The pruning mechanism balances the exploration and exploitation of the two stages of growing and sprouting, inspired by Ludvig’s law and the Fibonacci series. We performed a comprehensive performance evaluation of CGO on the standard testbed CEC2017 and the real-world problem set CEC2020-RW and compared it to a variety of mainstream algorithms such as SMA, SKA, DBO, GWO, MVO, HHO, WOA, EWOA, and AVOA. The best result of CGO after Friedman testing was 1.6333/10, and the significance level of all comparison results under Wilcoxon testing was lower than 0.05. The experimental results show that the mean and standard deviation of repeated CGO experiments are better than those of the comparison algorithm. In addition, CGO also achieved excellent results in specific applications of robot path planning and photovoltaic parameter extraction, further verifying its effectiveness and broad application potential in practical engineering problems.

Abstract Oxygen evolution reaction catalysts capable of working efficiently in acidic media are highly demanded for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. Herein, we report a Zn-doped RuO2 nanowire array electrocatalyst with outstanding catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction under acidic conditions. Overpotentials as low as 173, 304, and 373 mV are achieved at 10, 500, and 1000 mA cm−2, respectively, with robust stability reaching to 1000 h at 10 mA cm−2. Experimental and theoretical investigations establish a clear synergistic effect of Zn dopants and oxygen vacancies on regulating the binding configurations of oxygenated adsorbates on the active centers, which then enables an alternative Ru−Zn dual-site oxide path of the reaction. Due to the change of reaction pathways, the energy barrier of rate-determining step is reduced, and the over-oxidation of Ru active sites is alleviated. As a result, the catalytic activity and stability are significantly enhanced.

Objective: To investigate the role of Interleukin-34 (IL-34) in acute T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR) following renal transplantation. Methods: The mice acute TCMR model of renal transplantation was established and identified by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. Then, IHC staining of IL-34 was also performed to determine the expression of IL-34 in allografts. Recipients were infected with IL-34 overexpression adeno-associated virus, infection efficiency of which was estimated by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western blot, and immunofluorescence. HE and IHC staining were used to estimate the grades of TCMR. Flow cytometry was performed on lymphocytes in spleens of recipients including regulatory T cells (Tregs) and M2 macrophages. The expression of cytokines in vivo was analyzed by Mouse Cytokine Grp I Panel. Finally, Tregs and M2 macrophages were cultured in vitro and treated with IL-34 to observe the effects of IL-34 on the differentiation of the cells. Results: The mouse TCMR model was successfully established by HE, periodic acid shiff (PAS), CD4 and CD8 IHC staining. The expression of IL-34 was significantly decreased in allografts with TCMR. BALB/c mice were successfully infected with IL-34 overexpression adeno-associated virus. Subsequently, the grade of rejection in mice TCMR model was evaluated by HE and IHC staining according to Banff criteria. It is suggested that the grade of TCMR in IL-34 overexpressed mice was significantly decreased. IHC staining and Flow cytometry showed that the proportion of Tregs and M2 macrophages in the spleens and allografts were significantly increased in IL-34 overexpressed mice. Serum levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), IL-17 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were downregulated in IL-34 overexpressed mice. Moreover, IL-34 could promote macrophage M2 polarization, while failed to promote differentiation of naïve T cells into Tregs in vitro. Conclusion: Overexpression of IL-34 may attenuate the progression of TCMR episodes in allografts by increasing the polarization of M2 macrophages in the spleens and allografts, which may become a potential therapeutic strategy for TCMR.

Large quantities of electric furnace nickel slag (EFNS) are annually generated through the smelting of ferronickel in industries. EFNS contains a large amount of glass phase SiO2 and MgO, with certain volcanic ash activity. Nevertheless, the lower early activity of EFNS due to the ultra-low Ca and Al greatly limits its application. To descend the consumption of raw materials and mitigate environmental pollution, utilizing such wastes as a binding agent in the domain of repairing mortars is a suitable solution. To address the lack of Ca and Al and adjust the ratios of Ca/Al and Si/Al in EFNS-based mortars, the purpose of the research was to incorporate different contents of slag (SL) and fly ash (FA) from 25% to 40%, respectively, into EFNS-based mortars activated with Na2SiO3. The study involved an investigation of the workability, mechanical properties, bond strength, and dry shrinkage of the mortars, employing different percentages of SL and FA. At the same time, TGA, XRD, MIP, and SEM were applied to investigate the chemical composition and microstructure of the binder gel phase. The results showed that when the SL content reached 40% and the FA content was 30%, the repair performance of mortar was much better than numerous repair materials, with an excellent compressive strength (94.0 MPa), flexural strength (11.0 MPa), and bond strength (6.33 MPa). As such, increasing the SL and FA contents seemed to have a positive influence on dry shrinkage and mechanical strengths. Additionally, when the FA content was 30%, the incorporation of SL was found to promote EFNS hydrolysis, and the hydration could directly generate hydrotalcite, which was beneficial to decreasing drying shrinkage at 28 d. The present study provides a theoretical foundation for the application of EFNS-based geopolymers in repair materials.

AbstractBackground The assessment and prevention of mineral and bone disorder (MBD) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) have not been standardized. This study aimed to evaluate MBD one year after kidney transplantation (KT) and identify the influencing factors of MBD.Methods A total of 95 KTRs in our center were enrolled. The changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone metabolism biochemical markers, including serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus(P), 25-hydroxyvitamin D(25(OH)vitD), intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), bone alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin (OC), type I collagen N-terminal peptide and type I collagen C-terminal peptide (CTx), over one year after KT were assessed. The possible influencing factors of BMD were analyzed. The relationships between bone metabolism biochemical markers were evaluated. The indicators between groups with or without iPTH normalization were also compared.Results MBD after KT was manifested as an increased prevalence of hypophosphatemia and bone loss, persistent 25(OH)vitD deficiency, and partially decreased PTH and bone turnover markers (BTMs). Femoral neck BMD was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI) and postoperative 25(OH)vitD, and negatively correlated with postoperative PTH. Lumbar spine BMD was positively correlated with BMI and preoperative TG, and negatively correlated with preoperative OC and CTx. BMD loss was positively associated with glucocorticoid accumulation. Preoperative and postoperative iPTH was negatively correlated with postoperative serum P and 25(OH)vitD, and positively correlated with postoperative Ca and BTMs. The recipients without iPTH normalization, who accounted for 41.0% of all KTRs, presented with higher Ca, lower P, higher BTMs, advanced age, and a higher prevalence of preoperative parathyroid hyperplasia.Conclusions MBD persisted after KT, showing a close relationship with hyperparathyroidism, high bone turnover, and glucocorticoid accumulation.

When faults occur in rolling bearings, vibration signals exhibit sensitivity to periodic impact components, susceptibility to complex background noise, and non-stationary and nonlinear characteristics. Consequently, using traditional signal processing methods to effectively identify bearing faults presents significant challenges. To facilitate the accurate fault diagnosis of bearings in noisy conditions, we propose an intelligent fault diagnosis method using the Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA), coupled with a one-dimensional multi-scale residual convolutional neural network (1D-MRCNN), to optimize the variational mode extraction (VME) parameters. First, we introduce a weighted correlated kurtosis (WCK) indicator, formulated using the correlation coefficient and correlated kurtosis as the objective function, to optimize the VME’s center frequency ω and penalty factor α, enabling targeted signal extraction. Second, deep learning techniques are employed to construct the 1D-MRCNN. The neural network then processes the extracted signal for feature extraction and automated fault-type identification. Our simulation results show that the WCK objective function effectively isolates impact components under fault conditions, and our experimental validation confirms that the proposed method accurately identifies diverse fault types across multiple noise levels.

The reliability of liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks is an important factor that must be considered in their structural design. Concrete is a core component of LNG storage tanks, and the geometric uncertainty of concrete aggregate material has a significant impact on their reliability. However, owing to the significant size difference between the concrete aggregate compared to the LNG storage tank, structural analysis using an accurate finite element model that includes all the geometric characteristics of the aggregate incurs significant analytical costs. In particular, for reliability analysis requiring a large number of samples, the computational costs incurred by finite element models are infeasible. Therefore, a dual acceleration strategy based on the asymptotic homogenization method and surrogate model technology is proposed to improve the efficiency of LNG storage tank reliability analysis. In the cross-scale analysis of a LNG storage tank based on asymptotic homogenization, order reduction of the LNG storage tank analysis model was realized. Based on this, a surrogate model construction method with the aggregate fraction and mass moment as inputs was proposed to further accelerate the reliability analysis of LNG storage tanks. Subsequently, a Monte Carlo method was used to perform a reliability analysis of the LNG storage tank considering the uncertainty of the concrete aggregate geometry and distribution under the action of liquid weight and wind load. The analysis showed that the wind load has a significant influence on the safety of the design of the roof of a LNG storage tank. The directionality of the wind load has a significant impact on the distribution of the sample point response for reliability analysis and the failure mode of the LNG storage tank. Owing to the directionality of the wind load, the response distributions of the maximum displacement and maximum stress of LNG were more concentrated, and the reliability of the LNG storage tank decreased after considering the wind load. In particular, the stress reliability of the tank decreased by 5.86%. When only the liquid load was considered, the maximum displacement and stress exhibited asynchronous failure, and the two almost never occurred simultaneously. When the wind load was considered, the failure mode of the LNG storage tank was dominated by the maximum stress. Moreover, the numerical example also demonstrated that the degree of freedom involved in structural analysis, as well as the time of structural analysis can be significantly reduced. So, the proposed cross-scale analysis framework can significantly improve the efficiency of reliability analysis. The conclusions established in this study provide theoretical and methodological guidance for the reliable design of LNG storage tanks.

Summary: Regulatory T (Treg) cells exhibit immunosuppressive phenotypes and particular metabolic patterns with certain degrees of plasticity. Previous studies of the effects of the co-stimulatory molecule CD226 on Treg cells are controversial. Here, we show that CD226 primarily maintains the Treg cell stability and metabolism phenotype under inflammatory conditions. Conditional deletion of CD226 within Foxp3+ cells exacerbates symptoms in murine graft versus host disease models. Treg cell-specific deletion of CD226 increases the Treg cell percentage in immune organs but weakens their immunosuppressive function with a T helper 1-like phenotype conversion under inflammation. CD226-deficient Treg cells exhibit reduced oxidative phosphorylation and increased glycolysis rates, which are regulated by the adenosine 5′-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/myelocytomatosis oncogene (Myc) pathway, and inhibition of Myc signaling restores the impaired functions of CD226-deficient Treg cells in an inflammatory disease model of colitis. This study reveals an Myc-mediated CD226 regulation of Treg cell phenotypic stability and metabolism, providing potential therapeutic strategies for targeted interventions of Treg cell-specific CD226 in inflammatory diseases.

Abstract Backgrounds The kidney is an easily affected organ with sepsis which is a main underlying cause of acute kidney injury (AKI). Histone‐modifying lysine‐specific demethylase 2B (KDM2B) is involved in numerous pathological processes, such as cell senescence and tumor development. However, the role of KDM2B in sepsis‐induced AKI is unclear. Objects To investigate the role of KDM2B on cell viability, inflammation and oxidative stress of sepsis‐associated AKI, and the involved signaling pathways. Methods An AKI model in vitro was established through lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induction in HK‐2 cells. Western blots were performed to evaluate the expression of KDM2B, cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), p65, c‐Jun and c‐Fos, as well as p65 phosphorylation. Cell viability was measured using CCK‐8 kit. ELISA was performed to analyze the production of layered double hydroxide (LDH), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α, interleukin (IL)‐1β, IL‐18, vascular cell adhesion molecule‐1 (VCAM‐1), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and H2O2. The qPCR was used to evaluate the transcription level of TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐18, and VCAM‐1. Results KDM2B knockdown alleviated LPS‐induced cytotoxicity, decreased LDH release, and improved cell viability. KDM2B knockdown reduced concentration of inflammation‐related molecules including TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐18, and VCAM‐1, and inhibited their transcription. Moreover, KDM2B knockdown promoted the quantity of SOD and GSH, while declined the production of MDA, H2O2, COX2, and iNOS. Further, KDM2B played a role in LPS‐induced HK‐2 cell injury by activating nuclear factor κB (NF‐κB) and activator protein 1 (AP‐1) pathways. Conclusion KDM2B knockdown reduced cytotoxicity, inflammation and oxidative stress in LPS‐induced AKI via inhibiting NF‐κB and AP‐1 pathways, indicating KDM2B may be a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of sepsis‐associated AKI.

Abstract Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) can act as microRNA (miRNA) sponges, thus regulating gene expression. The role of circRNAs in the process of oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) is unclear. Here, we explored the mechanism underlying Circ VRK1 in human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMVECs) injury induced by OGD/R. Methods The OGD/R cell model was established in HBMVECs. The microarray was applied to detect differentially expressed circRNAs, followed by subcellular fractionation assay. Colony formation assay, flow cytometry, ELISA, tube formation, Transwell and western blot assays were performed for loss-of-function assay. HE staining, TTC staining, immunohistochemistry and western blot were performed in an established mouse model. The relationships between Circ VRK1 and miR-17, and between miR-17 and PTEN were detected by bioinformatics and dual-luciferase assays. Rescue experiments were conducted in vitro and in vivo, and PI3K/AKT activity was detected by Western Blot. Results Circ VRK1, predominantly present in the cytoplasm of cells, was upregulated in the HBMVECs exposed to OGD/R. Circ VRK1 downregulation decreased proliferation, migration, tube formation, inflammatory factors and oxidative stress, while increased apoptosis in HBMVECs. Moreover, Circ VRK1 silencing reduced neurological damage, cerebral infarct size, CD34-positive cell counts and VEGF expression in mice. Circ VRK1 mediated PTEN expression and the PI3K/AKT pathway by targeting miR-17. Deletion of miR-17 inhibited the effects of Circ VRK1 siRNA, and silencing of PTEN suppressed the effects of miR-17 inhibitor. Conclusion Circ VRK1 was upregulated during OGD/R. Circ VRK1 downregulation regulates PTEN expression by targeting miR-17, thereby promoting PI3K/AKT pathway activity to alleviate OGD/R injury.

Background Hypertension is a leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease in hemodialysis patients. Pre-dialysis systolic blood pressure (SBP) more than 160 mmHg was thought to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. The present study was performed to explore the clinical characteristics and management of hemodialysis patients with pre-dialysis SBP ≥ 160 mmHg.Methods A total of 1233 patients undergoing hemodialysis from nine hemodialysis centers were enrolled. Pre-dialysis and home BP were measured and clinical data were collected. The characteristics of patients with pre-dialysis SBP ≥ 160 mmHg were explored. Clinical parameters between hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients were compared. The partial correlation analyses performed to identify the associations between BP and clinical parameters.Results There were 24.6% of the hemodialysis patients had pre-dialysis SBP ≥ 160 mmHg and the average SBP was 173.8 ± 10.9 mmHg. Only 21.4% of the patients achieved dry weight after dialysis and up to 30.2% of patients were not given combination therapies of antihypertensive drugs. Compared to patients with pre-hemodialysis SBP < 160 mmHg, patients with pre-dialysis SBP ≥ 160 mmHg had lower target-reaching rate of Kt/v and higher incidences of intradialytic hypotension and muscle spasm. Most patients (96%) with pre-dialysis SBP ≥ 160 mmHg had home SBP≥ 135 mmHg. Patients with home SBP ≥ 160 mmHg had higher left ventricular weight index and lower hemoglobin levels when compared to their counterparts with home SBP

Background The risk factors for stroke in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are not well understood. This study aimed to explore the influence of systolic blood pressure (SBP) on the risk of stroke in a large cohort of elderly patients with stage 3–5 CKD.Methods We retrospectively identified 665 patients hospitalized in Beijing Friendship Hospital from January 2000 to December 2021. Patients were followed up until the occurrence of stroke or death. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the risk factors for stroke according to the presence or absence of CKD. The association between CKD and stroke was further evaluated regarding the role of SBP in the hypertensive population.Results In individuals with CKD, a J-shaped relationship was observed between SBP levels and the risk of stroke. Participants with CKD and an SBP less than 125 mmHg had a significantly higher cumulative stroke survival rate than those whose SBP was between 125 and 139 mmHg. The cumulative stroke survival rate increased progressively for those with SBP higher than 140 mmHg. This J-shaped relationship was not found in patients without CKD.Conclusion In elderly patients with CKD, those with the lowest BP are at increased risk for incident stroke. This phenomenon could be different from that in the general population.

Type XI collagen plays a fundamental role in fibrillogenesis, through formation of cartilage collagen fibrils and contributions to the cohesive properties of cartilage. The α-1 chain of type XI collagen is encoded by the COL11A1. Pathogenic variants of COL11A1, have been identified in several genetic conditions, including Marshall syndrome (MRSHS), Stickler syndrome type II, and Fibrochondrogenesis 1. We investigated genetic etiology of an induced labor fetus displaying micrognathia, cleft palate, hypertelorism and polydactyly. Whole-exome sequencing was performed in DNA samples of the proband and parents. Sanger sequencing was then performed as a confirmatory experiment and in silico evaluation was conducted on suspected variant. A novel de novo missense variant in exon62 of the COL11A1, NM_001854.3 COL11A1: c.4583G>T (p.Gly1528Val), was identified and verified by Sanger sequencing. In silico analysis demonstrated that the amino-acid p.Gly1528 was evolutionarily conservative, and that p.Gly1528Val was potentially damaging. This data provided reliable evidence for the subsequent genetic counseling to the affected family.

ObjectiveThis paper proposes a fuzzy sliding mode controller based on T-S fuzzy logic for the vertical plane motion control of an autonomous underwater glider (AUG) with limited actuator capability. MethodsIn the fuzzy sliding mode controller, the fuzzy switching rate is used to replace the switching rate in the fixed time controller to effectively suppress buffeting. The fuzzy switching rate is obtained by fitting the switching rate of the fixed time controller with T-S fuzzy rules. Based on the limited capabilities of AUG actuators, a saturation auxiliary system is designed to improve the actuator saturation effect. Finally, the performance of the system is verified by Lyapunov stability analysis and numerical simulation. ResultsThe results show that the AUG under the fuzzy sliding mode controller and the saturation auxiliary system can converge in finite time. The effectiveness of the fuzzy sliding mode controller and the saturation auxiliary system are verified by numerical simulation. ConclusionsBy making comparisons with the fixed-time controller, it is verified that the two controllers have similar control performance, and the buffeting of the fuzzy sliding mode controller is lesser.

Abstract Background The traditional prostate cancer (PCa) model is established by injecting cell suspension and is associated with a low tumor formation rate. Cell sheet technology is one of the advancements in tissue engineering for 3D cell-based therapy. In this study, we established ectopic and orthotopic PCa models by cell sheet technology, and then compared the efficiency of tumor formation with cell suspension injection. Methods DU145 cells were seeded on 35 mm temperature-sensitive dishes to form PCa cell sheets, while the cell suspension with the same cell density was prepared. After transplanting into the nude mice, the tumor volumes were measured every 3 days and the tumor growth curves were conducted. At the time points of 2 weeks and 4 weeks after the transplantation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to evaluate the transplanting site and distant metastasis. Finally, the mice were sacrificed, and the related tissues were harvested for the further histological evaluation. Results The orthotopic tumor formation rate of the cell sheet injection group was obviously better than that in cell suspension injection group (100% vs 67%). Compared with cell suspension injection, the tumors of DU145 cell sheet fragments injection had the higher density of micro-vessels, more collagen deposition, and lower apoptosis rate. There was no evidence of metastasis in forelimb, lung and liver was found by MRI and histological tests. Conclusion We successfully cultured the DU145 cell sheet and can be used to establish ectopic and orthotopic PCa tumor-bearing models, which provide an application potential for preclinical drug development, drug-resistance mechanisms and patient individualized therapy.

To identify herbaceous peony cultivars with strong photosynthetic productivity, we compared the photosynthetic characteristics of 20 herbaceous peony cultivars based on four photosynthetic characteristics parameters and established light–response curves under a light intensity gradient, using CIRAS-3 portable photosynthetic dynamic monitoring. The net photosynthetic rate (Pn) showed a “unimodal” diurnal variation pattern, with a peak around 12:00. The diurnal pattern of the transpiration rate was the same as that of Pn. Stomatal conductance values (Gs) showed similar patterns among the cultivars, with only small differences. The daily variation in intracellular CO2 concentration (Ci) showed an opposite trend to that of Pn. When the photosynthetically active radiation was 0–400 μmol·m−2s−1, Pn increased linearly and gradually with increasing light intensity. ‘Xueyuanhonghua’, ‘Qingwen’, ‘Taohuafeixue’, ‘Chifen’, and ‘Qihualushuang’ showed high photosynthetic productivity. ‘Xueyuanhonghua’, ‘Fushi’, ‘Qingwen’, ‘Tianshanhongxing’, ‘Qingtianlan’, ‘Dafugui’, and ‘Hongfushi’ had high light saturation points and the highest light resistance. ‘Xueyuanhonghua’, ‘Qingwen’, ‘Taohuafeixue’, ‘Tianshanhongxing’, ‘Qingtianlan’, ‘Guifeichacui’, ‘Chifen’, and ‘Hongxiuqiu’ had low light compensation points. Thus, two cultivars with strong photosynthetic productivity, ‘Xueyuanhonghua’ and ‘Qingwen’, can be cross-bred to obtain both light- and shade-tolerant plants. This study provides a theoretical basis for breeding new cultivars with high photosynthetic productivity.

An efficient carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), which reduces CO2 to low-carbon fuels and high-value chemicals, is a promising approach for realizing the goal of carbon neutrality, for which effective but low-cost catalysts are critically important. Recently, many inorganic perovskite-based materials with tunable chemical compositions have been applied in the electrochemical CO2RR, which exhibited advanced catalytic performance. Therefore, a timely review of this progress, which has not been reported to date, is imperative. Herein, the physicochemical characteristics, fabrication methods and applications of inorganic perovskites and their derivatives in electrochemical CO2RR are systematically reviewed, with emphasis on the structural evolution and product selectivity of these electrocatalysts. What is more, the current challenges and future directions of perovskite-based materials regarding efficient CO2RR are proposed, to shed light on the further development of this prospective research area.

InAs/AlSb is a material system that can be used as a low-noise avalanche detector and operates in the short-wave infrared band. The interface parameters determine the wave function overlap (WFO). Maximizing the WFO of InAs/AlSb superlattices improves the quantum efficiency (QE) of infrared avalanche photodetectors (APDs). However, this remains a huge challenge. Here, the 8-band k·p perturbation method based on Bloch wave envelope function approximation was used to calculate the energy level structure of InAs/AlSb superlattices. The results indicate that the WFO is enhanced with increasing InSb interface thickness or when the InSb (or AlAs) interface is far from the intersection of InAs and AlSb. As the AlAs interface thickness increases, the WFO enhances and then reduces. The maximum increase in WFO is 15.7%, 93%, and 156.8%, respectively, with three different models. Based on the stress equilibrium condition, we consider the interface engineering scheme proposed for enhancing WFO with an increase of 16%, 114%, and 159.5%, respectively. Moreover, the absorption wavelength shift is less than ±0.1 μm. Therefore, the interface layer thickness and position can be designed to enhance the WFO without sacrificing other properties, thereby improving the QE of the device. It provides a new idea for the material epitaxy of APDs.

Background and purposeSarcopenia is highly prevalent (28.5–40.3%) in patients undergoing hemodialysis and leads to poor clinical outcomes. However, the association between muscle quality and sarcopenia in patients receiving hemodialysis remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore the association between muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and proton-density fat-fraction (PDFF) in patients with sarcopenia undergoing hemodialysis.MethodsSeventy-six patients undergoing hemodialysis for > 3 months were enrolled. Their handgrip strength (HGS), short physical performance battery (SPPB) performance, and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) were measured. Sarcopenia was defined using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 consensus update. All patients underwent quantitative magnetic resonance imaging. CSA and PDFF were measured for the thigh, trunk, and gluteus muscles.ResultsThe prevalence of probable, confirmed, and severe sarcopenia in this study was 73.7%, 51.3%, and 22.4%, respectively. Older age (OR: 1.061, P < 0.003); lower body mass index (BMI) (OR: 0.837, P = 0.008), albumin (OR: 0.765, P = 0.004), prealbumin (OR: 0.987, P = 0.001), predialysis blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (OR: 0.842, P < 0.001), predialysis creatinine (OR: 0.993, P < 0.001), phosphorus (OR: 0.396, P = 0.047); lower CSA of the thigh (OR: 0.58, P = 0.035), third lumbar (L3) trunk (OR: 0.37, P = 0.004), gluteus minimus and medius (OR: 0.28, P = 0.001), and gluteus maximus (OR: 0.28, P= 0.001); and higher PDFF of the thigh (OR: 1.89, P = 0.036) and L3 trunk (OR: 1.71, P = 0.040) were identified as sarcopenia risk factors. The gluteus minimus and medius CSA was lower in patients with sarcopenia than in those without after adjusting for age and BMI (OR: 0.37, P = 0.017). Higher thigh (P = 0.031) and L3 trunk (P = 0.006) muscle PDFF were significantly associated with lower HGS. Furthermore, higher thigh (P = 0.011) and L3 trunk (P = 0.010) muscle PDFF were also inversely correlated with lower ASMI.ConclusionOur findings demonstrate the high prevalence of sarcopenia and myosteatosis in patients undergoing hemodialysis and might trigger a paradigm shift in intervention strategies for patients receiving hemodialysis.

Abstract In order to calculate the dynamic distribution of rail potential and stray current accurately, a multi‐state unified calculation model of rail potential and stray current is proposed, and the characteristics of different protection devices and reflux system in multi‐state DC railway systems are analysed. In the proposed model, the multi‐state characteristics of the traction substation, train, protection devices and reflux system are uniformly simulated by unified node models. The mixed simulation parameters of the catenary and reflux system are unified to lumped parameter networks, and the multi‐node voltage equations are established based on the simulation model. Then, the power flow of DC railway systems is calculated using an iterative solution, and the dynamic distribution of rail potential and stray current are solved by differential equations. The multi‐state unified calculation model is built and the distribution of rail potential and stray current in different conditions are simulated based on the parameters of Wuxi Subway Line 2. In order to verify the multi‐state unified calculation model proposed, field tests and simulations are carried out. Results show that the multi‐state unified calculation model can unify the complex states of DC railway systems and calculate the distribution of rail potential and stray current accurately.

Sulfonamide antibiotics in the environment not only disrupt the ecological balance but can also enter the human or animal body in various forms and cause harm. Therefore, exploring efficient methods to degrade sulfonamide antibiotics is crucial. In this study, we prepared biochar (BC) using corn straw, and TiO2/BC was obtained by doping different proportions of TiO2 into biochar with varying carbonization temperatures using the sol–gel method. Next, we investigated the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in solution using the generated TiO2/BC under ultraviolet irradiation and studied the effects of various experimental parameters, such as the type of composite material, composite material addition, solution pH, and initial antibiotic concentration on SMX degradation. Under an initial SMX concentration of 30 mg/L, the composite with the best photocatalytic degradation performance was TiO2/BC-5-300 (i.e., 5 mL of TiO2 doping; 300 °C calcination temperature), with an addition amount of 0.02 g and a solution pH of 3. The degradation efficiency increased from 22.3% to 89%, and the most significant degradation effect occurred during the initial stage of photocatalytic degradation. In the TiO2/BC-5-300 treated SMX solution, the average rhizome length of bean sprouts was significantly higher than that of the untreated SMX solution and slightly lower than that of the deionized aqueous solution (3.05 cm < 3.85 cm < 4.05 cm). This confirmed that the photocatalytic degradation of SMX by the composite was effective and could efficiently reduce its impact on the growth of bean sprouts. This study provides essential data and theoretical support for using TiO2/BC in the treatment of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater.

Bacillus anthracis has gained international attention as a deadly bacterium and a potentially deadly biological warfare agent. Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is the main component of the protective layer of anthracis spores, and is also an anthrax biomarker. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore an efficient and sensitive DPA detection method. Herein, a novel ratio hybrid probe (CQDs-PIL-Eu3+) was prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method using carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as an internal reference fluorescence and a covalent bond between CQDs and Eu3+ by using a polyionic liquid (PIL) as a bridge molecule. The ratiometric fluorescence probe was found to have the characteristics of sensitive fluorescence visual sensing in detecting DPA. The structure and the sensing properties of CQDs-PIL-Eu3+ were investigated in detail. In particular, the fluorescence intensity ratio of Eu3+ to CQDs (I616/I440) was linear with the concentration of DPA in the range of 0–50 μM, so the detection limit of the probe was as low as 32 nm, which was far lower than the DPA dose released by the number of anthrax spores in human body (60 μM) and, thus, can achieve sensitive detection. Therefore, the ratiometric fluorescence probe in this work has the characteristics of strong anti-interference, visual sensing, and high sensitivity, which provides a very promising scheme for the realization of anthrax biomarker DPA detection.

Abstract Background and aims Renal fibrosis is the common outcome in all progressive forms of chronic kidney disease. Unfortunately, the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis remains largely unexplored, among which metabolic reprogramming plays an extremely crucial role in the evolution of renal fibrosis. Ceria nanoparticles (CeNP-PEG) with strong ROS scavenging and anti-inflammatory activities have been applied for mitochondrial oxidative stress and inflammatory diseases. The present study aims to determine whether CeNP-PEG has therapeutic value for renal fibrosis. Methods The unilateral ureteral obstructive fibrosis model was used to assess the therapeutic effects in vivo. Transforming growth factor beta1-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in HK-2 cells was used as the in vitro cell model. The seahorse bioscience X96 extracellular flux analyzer was used to measure the oxygen consumption rate and extracellular acidification rate. Results In the present study, CeNP-PEG treatment significantly ameliorated renal fibrosis by increased E-cadherin protein expression, and decreased α-SMA, Vimentin and Fibronectin expression both in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, CeNP-PEG significantly reduced the ROS formation and improved the levels of mitochondrial ATP. The seahorse analyzer assay demonstrated that the extracellular acidification rate markedly decreased, whereas the oxygen consumption rate markedly increased, in the presence of CeNP-PEG. Furthermore, the mitochondrial membrane potential markedly enhanced, hexokinase 1 and hexokinase 2 expression significantly decreased after treatment with CeNP-PEG. Conclusions CeNP-PEG can block the dysregulated metabolic status and exert protective function on renal fibrosis. This may provide another therapeutic option for renal fibrosis. Graphical Abstract

The interferon (IFN) response is the first line of defense against viral invasion and thus plays a central role in the regulation of the immune response. IFN-epsilon (IFN-ε) is a newly discovered type I IFN that does not require viral induction, unlike other type I IFNs. IFN-ε is constitutively expressed in epithelial cells and plays an important role in mucosal immunity. In this study, we evaluated the biological activity of the mink-IFN (MiIFN)-ε gene in prokaryotic cells. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to evaluate IFN-ε expression in different mink tissues. MiIFN-ε was highly expressed in brain, lung, tracheal, kidney, intestinal, bladder, ovarian, and testis tissues. There was no significant difference in MiIFN-ε expression between female and male minks, except in the reproductive system. Expression of the small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO3)-MiIFN-ε fusion gene was induced by isopropylβ-d-thiogalactoside, and MiIFN-ε was collected after SUMO-specific protease digestion. We tested the antiviral activity of MiIFN-ε against vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) in epithelial cells of feline kidney 81 (F81). We used qRT-PCR to analyze the expression of several IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs), including ISG15, 2′-5′ oligoadenylate synthetase (2′-5′OAS1), and myxovirus resistance protein 1 (Mx1). Recombinant IFN-ε induced high ISG expression in F81 cells. Compared with those in the cell control group, expressions of ISG15, Mx1, and 2′-5′ OAS1 in the VSV-GFP control, IFN-ε, and MiIFN-ε-inhibited VSV-GFP groups were significantly increased. Compared with those in the VSV-GFP control group, expressions of ISG15 and 2′-5′ OAS1 in the IFN-ε and MiIFN-ε-inhibited VSV-GFP groups were significantly increased, and the differences were highly significant (p < 0.0001). IFN-ε played an indirect antiviral role. These findings lay the foundation for detailed investigation of IFN-ε in the future.

Abstract Obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, contributing to an increasing prevalence of chronic metabolic diseases, such as insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD), and steatohepatitis. Macrophages are the predominant immune cells in adipose tissues. Adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) would switch to pro-inflammatory M1 state during obesity, causing local and systemic inflammation. However, the regulatory mechanism of ATMs has not yet been well described within this process. Using a high-fat diet (HFD)–induced mouse obesity model, we found that the costimulatory molecule CD226 was highly expressed on ATMs and knockout (KO) of CD226 alleviated obesity caused by HFD. Loss of CD226 reduced the accumulation of ATMs and hindered macrophage M1 polarization, with lower serum proinflammatory cytokine levels. Furthermore, deficiency of CD226 on ATMs decreased the phosphorylation levels of VAV1, AKT, and FOXO1 and thereby upregulated PPAR-γ. Further administration of PPAR-γ inhibitor restored M1 phenotype in CD226KO ATMs. In summary, loss of CD226 alleviates the HFD-induced obesity and systemic inflammation through inhibition of the accumulation and M1 polarization of ATMs in which PPAR-γ-dependent signaling pathway is involved, suggesting that CD226 may be identified as a potential molecular target for the clinical treatment of obesity.

In order to improve the quality of outlet temperature of DSG trough solar collector, the classical multi-objective optimization method is used to optimize the parameters of PID controller. In the optimization process, two kinds of objective functions are designed, one kind is the direct objective functions, the other kind is the indirect functions. The simulation curves of the parameters obtained by the multi-objective optimization method are much better than those of the original literature in the adjustment time and other indicators. In addition, the control valve position changes are within the allowable range, and the control system also has a certain robustness. Finally, the solution time of indirect objective function is about 1/6 of that of direct objective function, and there is no need to determine the ideal value of control index. Therefore, it is reasonable and effective to use multi-objective optimization algorithm and indirect objective function to optimize the parameters of PID controller for the outlet temperature of trough solar collector.

Microbial infection, caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasites, significantly contributes to the global death burden and health costs. The innate and adaptive immune systems orchestrate a multifaceted signaling response to invading pathogens as the human antimicrobial system. In this process, caspase recruitment domain-containing protein 9 (CARD9) emerges as a critical intermediary adaptor molecule to participate in regulating a series of antimicrobial immune reactions. Previous publications have confirmed that CARD9 plays a crucial role in fungal, bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. In this study, we aim to provide an update on the recent clinical and basic studies where the mechanism and function of CARD9 have been further studied and understood. In addition, we summarize the latest treatment and prevention strategies based on CARD9 and discuss the current perspectives and future direction of CARD9.

Abstract A wideband mono‐cone antenna is proposed. Evolution from a top‐loaded mono‐cone, the top plate is etched by two rings and loaded by an array of resistors and inductors. This design improves impedance matching properties in the low frequency range while maintaining a compact size. An equivalent circuit modal is built for assisting the antenna design. A prototype is fabricated and measured for verification. The antenna operates in the frequency band of 118–1100 MHz with |S11|≤‐10 dB and the fluctuation of omni‐directional radiation pattern ≤ 2.5 dB. The occupied area of the antenna is 0.24 λL × 0.24 λL × 0.06 λL, which is attractive for use on aircraft.
