Limited research exists on the health and injuries of South African senior netball players. Senior netball players may be at greater risk of injuries and chronic disease due to their age. To treat these conditions, they may use prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications and, therefore, may be more vulnerable to unintentional doping. The primary aim of this study was to determine the health status, medication use and attitudes towards doping of South African senior netball players. A cross-sectional descriptive design was employed to collect data by means of an online survey. The validated 8-item Performance Enhancement Attitudes Scale (PEAS) was used to gather information on the netball player's attitudes towards doping. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data using proportions (categorical), means (normally distributed, continuous) and medians (non-normal distributed, continuous). Doping prevalence and accompanying 95% confidence interval were calculated. Sixty senior netball players consented and completed the self-report questionnaire. The prevalence of chronic disease was 11.67%. Asthma and other conditions such as depression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) had the highest prevalence of 3.33%. The prevalence of chronic prescription medication use was 8.33% and 66.67% of the netball players reported receiving prescription injections, medications or utilizing OTC medications for treating injury or illness suffered 1–6 weeks before or during competition. The netball players do not have a lenient attitude towards doping. The prescription and OTC medication use could put this cohort of netball players at risk of unintentional doping. Anti-doping education aimed at senior athletes may be beneficial to reduce the risk of unintentional doping due to prescription and OTC medication use for injury or illness.

Abstract Background For athletes, overcoming obstacles in challenging situations like pandemic home training is crucial. Strategies and approaches in this context are not well-documented. Our study aims to investigate such a scenario from a performance standpoint, based on a major global crisis: the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. Methods This cross-sectional study surveyed athletes without disabilities using online questionnaires (35 languages) from May to July 2020. Questions included aspects of alternative routines, training monitoring, recovery, sleep patterns, injury occurrence/prevention based on structured answers, and an open-ended question on lockdown training experiences. Results Of the 11,762 athletes from 142 countries, 63% were male, including at World-Class, International, National, State and Recreational levels. During lockdown, 25% athletes used innovative or modern ways to maintain or improve fitness e.g., virtual reality and tracking devices (favoring World-Class level, 30%). Many athletes, regardless of gender (43%) watched video competitions to improve/maintain their mental skills and performance [World-Class (47%) and International (51%)]. Contact frequency between athletes and their coaches was mainly at least once a week (36%), more among higher-level (World-Class/International) than lower-level athletes (27 vs. 16%). Higher-level athletes (≥ 54%) monitored training load and were assisted by their coaches (21%). During lockdown, stretching (67%) was considered one of the primary means of recovery, especially for higher-level athletes (> 70%). Compared to pre-lockdown, about two-thirds of athletes reported “normal” or “improved” sleep quality and quantity, suggesting a low sleep quality pre-lockdown. On average, 40% utilized injury prevention exercises (at least) once a week [World-Class (51%) and International (39%)]. Most injury occurrences during lockdown involved the knee (18%), ankle (16%), and back (9%). Four key themes emerged regarding lockdown experiences: remote training adaptation (e.g., shifting training focus), training creativity (e.g., using household items), performance enhancement opportunities (e.g., refocusing neglected aspects), and mental and motivation challenges. Conclusions Both male and female athletes, particularly those of higher levels, displayed some adaptalibity during the COVID-19 lockdown, employing innovative approaches and technology for training. Many athletes implemented load monitoring, recovery, and attentive of injury prevention, while optimizing their sleep quality and quantity. Athletes demonstrated their abilities to navigate challenges, and utilized different coping strategies in response to the lockdown’s constraints.

Objective: To determine the neurocognitive function of active professional male footballers, determine whether deficits/impairments exist, and investigate the association between previous concussion(s) and neurocognitive function. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study conducted via electronic questionnaires. The CNS Vital Signs online testing system was used to evaluate neurocognitive function. Results: Of the 101 participants, 91 completed the neurocognitive function testing. Neurocognitive function domain deficits or impairments were unlikely in 54.5–89.1%, slight in 5.9–21.8%, moderate in 1.0–9.9%, and likely in 4.0–14.9% of participants. A history of zero concussions found a significant association between the neurocognitive index (Odds Ratio [OR] 0.6; 95% CI 0.2–0.4) and complex attention domain (OR 0.3; 95% CI 0.1–0.9), with 40% and 70% less odds, respectively, of deficit/impairment. Among the 54.5% who reported any number of concussions, there were increased odds of neurocognitive domain deficits/impairments for complex attention (CA) [3.4 times more] and simple attention (SA) [3.1 times more]. Conclusion: In the active professional male footballer, most neurocognitive functions do not have significant deficits/impairments. The odds of neurocognitive function deficit/impairment were significantly increased threefold for CA and SA in those who reported a history of any concussion(s).

BackgroundPrevious research has raised concerns regarding inconsistencies between reported and pre-specified outcomes in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) across various biomedical disciplines. However, studies examining whether similar discrepancies exist in RCTs focusing on gastrointestinal and liver diseases are limited. This study aimed to assess the extent of discrepancies between registered and published primary outcomes in RCTs featured in journals specializing in gastroenterology and hepatology.MethodsWe retrospectively retrieved RCTs published between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2021 in the top three journals from each quartile ranking of the 2020 Journal Citation Reports within the "Gastroenterology and Hepatology" subcategory. We extracted data on trial characteristics, registration details, and pre-specified versus published primary outcomes. Pre-specified primary outcomes were retrieved from the World Health Organization's International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Only trials reporting specific primary outcomes were included in analyzing primary outcome discrepancies. We also assessed whether there was a potential reporting bias that deemed to favor statistically significant outcomes. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests, Fisher's exact tests, univariate analyses, and logistic regression.ResultsOf 362 articles identified, 312 (86.2%) were registered, and 79.8% of the registrations (249 out of 312) were prospective. Among the 285 trials reporting primary outcomes, 76 (26.7%) exhibited at least one discrepancy between registered and published primary outcomes. The most common discrepancies included different assessment times for the primary outcome (n = 32, 42.1%), omitting the registered primary outcome in publications (n = 21, 27.6%), and reporting the registered secondary outcomes as primary outcomes (n = 13, 17.1%). Univariate analyses revealed that primary outcome discrepancies were lower in the publication year 2020 compared to year 2021 (OR = 0.267, 95% CI: 0.101, 0.706, p = 0.008). Among the 76 studies with primary outcome discrepancies, 20 (26.3%) studies were retrospectively registered, and 32 (57.1%) of the prospectively registered trials with primary outcome discrepancies showed statistically significant results. However, no significant differences were found between journal quartiles regarding primary outcome consistency and potential reporting bias (p = 0.14 and p = 0.28, respectively).ConclusionsThis study highlights the disparities between registered and published primary outcomes in RCTs within gastroenterology and hepatology journals. Attention to factors such as the timing of primary outcome assessments in published trials and the consistency between registered and published primary outcomes is crucial. Enhanced scrutiny from journal editors and peer reviewers during the review process is necessary to ensure the reliability of gastrointestinal and hepatic trials.

The aim of this scoping review was to present an overview of the existing epidemiological evidence in retired male and female elite rugby players regarding the prevalence rates of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neurocognitive, psychological and gynaecological health conditions. A systematic search was carried out across MEDLINE (via PubMed), SPORTDiscus (via EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (via EBSCOhost) and EMBASE for musculoskeletal (eg, osteoarthritis), cardiovascular (eg, hypertension), neurocognitive (eg, dementia) and psychological health (eg, disordered eating, alcohol misuse) conditions in retired elite male and female rugby players and gynaecological health conditions (menorrhagia) in retired female rugby players. Primary research studies describing the prevalence rates of health conditions in retired elite male and female rugby players written in English, Dutch or French and with full text available online were included. Five hundred and seventy-three citations were originally identified and 16 studies were ultimately included in our review. No studies on health conditions in retired elite female rugby players were found. Four individual studies showed there was a significant higher prevalence rate of osteoarthritis in retired elite male rugby players compared with control groups. Various neurocognitive health conditions were investigated and showed, among others, a prevalence rate of 57% for mild cognitive disorder. The prevalence of self-reported depression and hazardous alcohol use in retired elite male rugby players was significantly higher than in control groups matched for age and education. Our review found relatively high prevalence rates of musculoskeletal health conditions such as osteoarthritis and psychological health conditions such as depression and hazardous alcohol use in retired elite male rugby players. More research needs to be conducted to understand better the health conditions of retired elite rugby players, especially among retired elite female players.

Altered biomechanics due to amputation can contribute to substantial limitations, influencing sporting activities. Individuals with lower extremity amputations or congenital lower limb deficiency are encouraged to participate in para-sports. However, to compete in Paralympic sports, the candidate must have an impairment that results in lower extremity loss of function and meets or exceeds the sport's minimum impairment criteria (MIC). This review will focus on the MIC for competitive wheelchair tennis. Limb deficiency is known as one of the MIC used to regulate participation in competitive para-sports since it impacts gait, kinematics, and biomechanics of both the upper and lower body. Notwithstanding, it is questionable whether the MIC concerning limb deficiency is set at the correct level for determining eligibility for participating in Paralympic sports. This study aims to provide an overview of the evidence examining the impact of different partial foot amputation (PFA) levels on gait as a proxy for sporting performance. This scoping review will be based on a 6-step methodological framework and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis, extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Studies will be selected from PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus. Two authors will screen the titles/abstracts independently. Selected studies will be scrutinised, and the same authors will extract data. Findings will be relevant to informing the evidence-based development of MIC for lower limb impairment after PFA and may be extrapolated to specific Paralympic sports, including wheelchair tennis. Results will be disseminated through scientific publications and conferences to audiences interested in Paralympic sports.

Cross-sectional, analytical study that examined the link between sleep quality (SQ) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in young athletes in a sports competition. SQ was measured through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and HRQOL through the SF36 v2 (SF36v2) short-form health survey in 71 young athletes (39 men; mean age 16.9, SD = 1.2 years; mean 6.5, SD = 3.2 years in sports and mean 10.8, SD = 3.3 hours of weekly training) on the day prior to a competition. When comparing the athletes according to SQ (poor SQ > 5 PSQI), significant differences were found (p < .05) in HRQOL in the domains bodily pain, general health, vitality, social function, emotional role and mental health, but not in the domains bodily function and physical role. Our results suggest poor SQ is associated with a worse perception of HRQOL in young athletes in competition. Key words: Sleep hygiene, mental health, quality of life, athletes, youth sports.
